Uh oh. Did somebody just say something about a KOTOR MMO?

This just may be the catalyst that will suck me into the MMO world. I resisted the sheer force of WoW, and there has never been any other MMO that I've even remotely wanted to play, but all signs point to awesome here. Since Mass Effect, I've become a huge fan of BioWare, and the last-gen Knights of the Old Republic was a great game.

Put those facts is a bottle, shake 'em up, and I think you've got a WoW killer/MMO that Mark will actually play.

In gaming news today and as the E3 is drawing to a close we can finally start to sit back and relax (a little).

Guitar Hero: World Tour to Feature 3 Jimi Hendrix Songs

Activision stroke back with a vengeance today when they announced that the new Guitar Hero would feature not one, not two but three! songs from Jimi Hendrix. And not the least known ones either: Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Little Wings. During the Microsoft conference at E3 2008 Harmonix announced that they would finally feature AC/DC in Rock Band 2, but they are only featuring one single song, Let There Be Rock, which gives Guitar Hero a sudden edge. The music game battle rages on!

Knights of the Old Republic Online is finally confirmed!

Portfolio.com got the story today form the horse's mouth, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello, that EA is indeed working on the next KotOR project and that "yes"" it is an MMO. No release date or any other details have been announced yet but it seems the name might be "The Old Republic".

Alan Wake to Be Shown at TGS

A Vista promotional page hints at the fact that the game will finally be shown at this year's Tokyo Game Show. The game was strongly missing for E3 2008 and one can wonder about the validity of showing a PC game in Japan which is a very console oriented market.

Wii Sales Above 360 in the U.S. for the First Time

As of June, according to numbers released by the NDP, the Wii has sold 10.9 million units whereas the 360 has sold 10.4 million, officially beating the Microsoft console for the first time in the U.S. It is worth noting that worldwide the Wii has been above the 360 for some time selling close to 25 million units as opposed to 19 million for the latter.

Before I get started I wanted to show a video I found that has a very very nice look at the map. I don't think that was the intention of the video, but it shows the maps off amazingly. Very High Quality.

---------------------------------------

So I mentioned how customizable AION was before. There are indeed a whole bunch of different looks available for your character. They also seem to be more distinctive than say... Age of Conan. Sure there were a lot of options in Age of Conan, but they were all pretty similar. Age of Conan had 4-6 hair color options. Blond, Brown, Black, Black and Black. Hot.

You know, if Age of Conan, had all of the same gameplay and everything, but it had Aion's graphics, I'd probably wouldn't have canceled my account. I hate playing through a game where I can't stand looking at my character. I was so happy when EQ2 added that ability to wear a second set of armor purely for aesthetics. They understood what I wanted out of the game. To kick ass and look good at the same time.

Luckily, AION delivers. In a big way.

In the videos I'm going to put up, you can see the color choices that are available. Any color you want. You get a color chooser like in Photoshop. Wonderful.

It seems like if you like the style of AION, then you'll be able to create a character that you enjoy. The options are there.

Some have said the character creator has gone too far in how much it allows you to do. I disagree. If someone wants to look like a freak, that is their choice. And I'm glad they have the option to do so. However, someone who does not agree made this video. GIANT HEADS FOR EVERYBODY!!!

Love it.

Finally, I leave you with the highest quality video of them all. The one that turned me on to AION in the first place. The character creation video created by NCSoft. Enjoy.

Straight from the steaming hot plate of E3 to your gaping mouth, comes the confirmation of the rumors we've all been suspecting. That Bioware MMO you've been hearing about is indeed a KOTOR MMO, and is being worked on in partnership with Lucas Arts. Portfolio.com has the pertinent information--here's an excerpt from the interview:

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," said [EA CEO] Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. "And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online? "Yes," he said.

So, are you excited about another Star Wars MMO, or have you been burned by Star Wars Galaxies?

Everything in-game is done, and ready to be played and tested. The game, at this stage is being "polished".

"Everything we’re going to ship with, for the most part, is in, is being played, everybody is taking a look at it, giving us feedback and now we’re doing the final polish." -- Art director Adam Gerschtowitz

Now the game was cut from content, it apperantly is finished. Seems like Mythic saw a good purpose to cut the content to release it in time.

Some interesting stuff in the Wrath of the Lich King Beta FAQ. Apparently to log in to the Beta, you will need to create a "Temporary Blizzard Account". A Blizzard Account is already being used at the new Blizzard online store, and you can bind the CD-keys of older Blizzard games to this account, allowing you to re-download old games and make sure you can't lose your CD-keys any more. Until now, the new Blizzard Account had nothing to do with World of Warcraft, but that's about to change:

Temporary Blizzard Account FAQ

What is the purpose of a Blizzard Account, and how is it different from a World of Warcraft account?

The Blizzard Account is a new way to manage your Blizzard Entertainment products and make purchases from the Blizzard Store. You can use the Blizzard Account to download and play Blizzard Entertainment games that you have registered online. The Blizzard Account will also keep track of your entire order and billing history, and save multiple addresses and payment methods for easy access. This is just the beginning of what the Blizzard Account offers, and it will expand as we continue to add more features and functions in the future. To learn more about the Blizzard Account, please read our Blizzard Account FAQ. Please note that the normal functions of a Blizzard Account are unavailable in the temporary Blizzard Account you create to log in to the Wrath of the Lich King beta.

Does this mean we'll be logging in to World of Warcraft with a regular Blizzard Account in the future?

We plan to make the Blizzard Account the standard login for World of Warcraft beginning with Wrath of the Lich King.

If they are truly integrating Blizzard Account to World of Warcraft, it's obvious that it will also be used with the new Battle.Net which is coming with Starcraft 2. From there it's just one small step to a Steam-style single log-in for all Blizzard offerings - and since Blizzard Account is tied to the Blizzard Store, you can see where it's leading to...

Add the Blizzard Authenticator and the announcement of achievements in World of Warcraft to the mix, and you have a gamerscore-like system (most likely applying to Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 as well), secure single sign-on for all Blizzard's upcoming games, all tied to the Blizzard online store. it's all slowly inching towards a Steam-like system.

Once again, Blizzard doesn't actually innovate and is usually slow to react, but once something is proven to be a good idea, Blizzard grabs it and does it themselves, polishing everything to the usual Blizzard standards.

By Dimorphic

EA has today confirmed the development of the next Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - in MMO form:

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development", said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. "And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about — in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it".

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumoured Knights of the Old Republic Online? "Yes", he said.

The questions that remain now are simple; will the game come to consoles? Will the game be any good? Will it incorporate the previous two games and their stories? How much will it cost?

Stay tuned.

John Riccitiello was inteviewed at E3 this week and he made a confirmation that will make Star Wars fans cry tears of joy. When talking about two popular MMOs coming out of EA Riccitiello said "The one that people are dying for us to talk to them about, in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it." If that doesn't give it away, then the next thing he said definitely will. When asked if it was the next Knights of the Old Republic game, he replied "Yes."

With EA's direct competition being Activision-Blizzard, it was only natural for them to develop an MMO out of a well-known and well-liked franchise, made by a top-notch team. If anyone can pull this off, it's BioWare (okay, and Blizzard). There's one thing I can't help but notice, though; there aren't any platforms mentioned. Most MMOs are PC exclusives, but some today, like Age of Conan, have moved to consoles. A lot of KotOR's fans know the series on the original Xbox, so I have a feeling this title won't do as well only on the PC. Not to mention, many gamers, such as myself, have computers that couldn't even run Pong (hyperbole). If it's PC only, I'll be mad. If it comes to consoles, I'll scream like a little girl. Don't screw this up!

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has confirmed that celebrated developer BioWare is at work on a MMO based on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic franchise.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," Riccitiello told Portfolio.com. "The one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."

When asked pointedly if the game he was referring to was the oft-rumored Knights of the Old Republic MMO, the CEO simply responded "Yes."

BioWare has made several mentions of its in-development MMO project, but has remained characteristically silent on which, if any, property it would license for the title.

Earlier this year, however, BioWare and LucasArts announced that they had partnered for an unspecified project, leading many to speculate that the Star Wars MMO was indeed in development.

No release date or platforms have yet been revealed for the long-in-development MMO. A PC version is likely, though BioWare has made several comments indicating that it may be considering a console release as well.

Here's the post from Joystiq.com

Portfolio.com just published a short excerpt of its interview with EA boss John Riccitiello who tells the site that it's "got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development" including "the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare." One doesn't need to connect too many dots to arrive at the conclusion that BioWare is returning to the Star Wars universe with a Knights of the Old Republic MMO.

Of course, this product has been rumored for ... well, for a long time. Separately confirming a BioWare / LucasArts collaboration and a BioWare MMO project lead to certain obvious conclusions and countless other rumors and leaks seemed to do everything but confirm (and some denied) the project's existence. Though it would appear Riccitiello wasn't quite ready to put a name on that project – it's Portfolio.com connecting those dots – by referencing that this is the game that "people are dying for us to talk to them about" he clearly seems to be pointing to KOTOR.

[Update: We've just spoken with N. Evan Van Zelfden, the writer of the report, who told us that when asked specifically if this game was "KOTOR Online", Riccitiello responded unequivocally, "Yes." So, there you have it – sounds like we can take off our skeptical glasses.]

I personally didn't want to see KOTOR go MMO because it has been one of the best single player experiences I've ever had on a game. It's almost like no one cares about the single player games anymore... I get the demand for a Star Wars MMO is really high...but why'd it have to be KOTOR, why not Battlefront or another one... Oh well, I guess this is one I won't be picking up.

The arrival of the next World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, will add more than just new areas and classes to the popular PC MMO. Developer Blizzard today confirmed rumors that Lich King will introduce goal-based achievements.

"Some achievements come with in-game rewards such as tabards, vanity pets, and titles," the company wrote on its official site. "All of these rewards are purely cosmetic and just for fun, but you'll certainly stand out when you proudly display them."

Over 500 achievements will be available initially, with Blizzard noting that the list is "easily expandable." A new window displays the conditions for the various achievements, and also those earned.

The achievements are broken down into categories: Player-vs.-Player, Dungeons and Raids, Professions, Quests, Events, World Exploration, Reputations, and General.

Examples provided by Blizzard include giving out 10 hugs, collecting 10 vanity pets, beating every dungeon, or killing 50 enemy players in your faction's capital cities.

"Some achievements, including those that involve quests, honorable kills, items currently in your possession, skills (including professions), exploration, and reputations, will be applied to your character retroactively," the studio noted.

When an achievement is earned, nearby players and guild members are instantly alerted of the accomplishment. They will also be viewable on the web through the game's Armory.

Wrath of the Lich King is tentatively slated to arrive later this year.

EA has finally teased the upcoming title.

EA to Play in Knights of the Old Republic Portfolio.com's Technology Blog seems to offer confirmations of a BioWare-developed Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic MMOG straight from EA boss John Riccitiello, in what seems like an oddly low-key approach to such a highly anticipated announcement:

N. Evan Van Zelfden in Los Angeles warns, watch out World of Warcraft. In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it.

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," said Riccitiello.

Moving into MMOs is an essential component for any gaming company, and it's a big part of the reason Vivendi merged with Activision, for that company's World of Warcraft MMO.Riccitiello told Portfolio.com that he was interested in owning World of Warcraft, and that he did discuss it, but it wasn't in the cards. "Because [Vivendi] couldn't afford control of EA, and I wasn't giving it up."

But EA is firmly on that path now, with a KOTOR MMO, which would sidestep the consoles owned by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. "Increasingly, people are going to be talking about direct-to-customer in our business," said Riccitiello. "I think we'll be talking about it louder than most."

While scouring the blogsphere this evening, I came across a comment by Thrade on Syp's rather excellent WAR blog. This is what he said:

"I hope as many WoWfanboys stay with WoW as possible; I don’t want any of there [sic] kind in our new game."

It got me thinking - as a potential future player, nay, stakeholder in WAR, do I want WoW fanboys joining me in the 'World of Warhammer'?

Now, my good, charitable, kind upbringing causes me to immediately say I shouldn't say I want them to stay away. I should offer a place for them, I shouldn't discriminate. But what if it ruins the experience for everyone else? What if it causes other players to leave? Kind of like the big loud blokes who gatecrash a party, and the original, pleasant guests disappear. Surely you'd say you should have locked your doors to them before they came in, and allow everyone else to enjoy the party? That's what I'd say too. But Mythic can't shut their doors to people. They can't have interviews with people who want to play their game, and review them on a case-by-case basis. People who want to play do so. So why would people from WoW, come to WAR, dragging alongside them their 'CHUCK NORRIS PWNZ UR MOM' attitude? Well:

WoW is old. No denying it. It's passed its sell-by-date. It's lost its youthful vigour and now creaks and groans each time you load it up.

Blizzard butchered their lore, their dignity and their souls to keep it on top. As a result, it's not really a hugely fulfilling experience. It feels like a timesink.

They're now clutching at straws trying to keep the subscriber numbers up. If they lose their grip, the subscriber numbers will snowball. They're shamelessly stealing sucessful features from other MMOs (that's where this whole discussion stemmed from) - as a result, WoW is losing it's originality, starting to look like some sort of inbred mongrel rat. Sort of like this. Whereas WAR, built from the ground up to integrate these features, holds them much better, and is looking pretty slick and smooth.

As a result, many WoW players want something new. But, even after 4 years in Azeroth and Outland, they still demand quality. And enough polish so you can see your face in it!

Why do they need the attitude? I hear you ask. Well, I think it's more of an environmental thing. I guess when everyone around you, 10 million other players are talking like that, you just kind of pick it up. Naturally, you can't beat them, so why not join them? Indulge in your immature side! The only problem is you find out you can't revert back to standard English. You forget the phrase 'is/am better than' and in place your neurons only recall the term 'Own' or 'Pwn'. You forget all manners of earthly Deity, and in his/her/their place is Chuck Norris, Texas Ranger. And for some reason, you have a strange obsession with peoples' mums...

I guess what I'm trying to say, is try to show these people a little understanding. Clearly we can't be shot of them, so use it as an oppourtuinity to show them that you needn't behave like they do when playing with people online. Show them the civilised way, chuck them an invite to your guild if you're able too. Maybe if everyone can 'De-PWN' a WoW fanboy, the WARld will be a better place.

Fällt also auch flach.
Baldur's Gate - Ebenso viel zu viel gespielt früher.
Oblivion - Durchgespielt.
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 - Hach, das waren auch lustige Spiele.

Jemand Vorschläge vielleicht?

One of the nice things about AION that I haven’t really touched on yet is that at level 10 you

One of the nice things about AION that I haven't really touched on yet is that at level 10 you ascend and become a Deva. At which point, you gain wings.

These wings have a few uses. They become your own personal gryphon. Allowing you to travel between two designated areas on your own power. No Flying mounts required. They also allow you to fly for a limited amount of time. Allowing you to reach areas otherwise unapproachable. This allows for things like floating cities and dungeons.

Recently the patch notes for the Korean Closed Beta 3 were released. A great many things were confirmed and made more clear. They also added a nice little touch to the wings.

The "Glide" skill has been added.

The Glide skill is activated when flying, causing your wings to spread and glide on the air currents, bringing you slowly back down to earth. Press the [space bar] while in the air to spread your wings and enter Glide mode.

Glide mode is only available after becoming a winged Daeva, and can be used in every region in Aion. (Is exempt from the flight availability region list)

This is just another welcome addition to the game. Sounds like it will mimic the floating in Everquest 2. I always did enjoy being a Fae or one of the magical races who would just glide gently to the ground. Found a video of some people demonstrating the new glide ability.

What that video demonstrates is something that I appreciate. Everyone can fly. I played City of Heroes/Villains for quite a while and the difference between all of the movement abilities (Flight, Teleportation, Super Speed, and Super Jump) was huge. There were massive speed differences and endurance drains associated with each ability. Even in Everquest 2. For a long time the Fae had a very large advantage. In AION everyone seems to be on an even playing field.

Though I heard that there might be upgrades to your wings as you progress farther into the game.

The developers of AION seem to have learned from other games mistakes. Instead of just trying to take aspects from every game and just smash them together they seem to have taken the time to decide which bits would actually work in their world.

After looking up all of this information about the game, I'm glad that the developers haven't tried to just create World of Warcraft with a mild twist. Unlike some people. *cough* WAR *cough* The wings are an added bonus, but it looks like the game would have been fine without them. I couldn't be happier. I leave you with a few videos.

So it's that time of the year again. E3. One of the most exciting games for me is Fallout 3. Made by Bethesda Softworks, creators of one of my favourite games of all time Morrowind (and also its sequel, Oblivion, which I also enjoyed). It's got a great setting, outside of my comfort zone somewhat, as in, no orcs, elves or trolls, but with an essence of what made Bioshock great. As for the gameplay, that's where I believe it'll truly shine. It gives choice. I've seen videos showing how you can play it as a real-time FPS, or as a series of queued moves that play out after you've planned the combat in advance. Your character, too, can be whoever you wish. A sneaky character, a manipulative character, or a brutal combatant. I'd love to play the game through a few times in the different styles. But perhaps one of the best things I've read about the game so far is that your choices aren't ignored as you progress through the game, but they have consequences. I'm not talking 'if you break a law, you'll get hunted by the police', I mean that your actions throughout the game really influence how the game ends for you. Todd Howard said there would be 10,000 possible permutations.

And the world is large. The whole of post apocolyptic Washington DC is up to explore, with many different factions and organisations struggling to survive.

I'm genuinely excited about Fallout 3. It has atmosphere, it has grit, it has action, suspense and consequences. And it's being worked on by one of the most talented teams in the industry.

In other news, the fallout to the announcements of Black Friday are now becoming apparent. Countless bloggers have talked in detail about their thoughts of the announcements, but my initial fury has subsided somewhat. If you haven't done so already, see Syp's silver lining piece, it raises some good points and it is true that too many people were expecting too much of WAR. I'm still excited about it, still locking away my beta codes in the safest place in my house. All in all, I look to the fall.

Levelling: Lineage II introduces major new change - Vitali

Lineage II: The Chaotic Throne – Gracia

Levelling: Lineage II introduces major new change - Vitality System to help create build competitively high-level characters quickly.

Tuesday 15th July/... With the release of Gracia, Lineage II’s developers have completely changed the rules on how to build the game to ensure Lineage II is improved across the board and even more fun to play. The Vitality System will help players to build competitively high-level characters quicker than ever before, meaning they can now enjoy the great end-level content without the grind.

One of our greatest assets is our fantastic group of players, who are a very dedicated, hardcore bunch that spend a lot of time and effort building up their characters and battling each other in big player vs. player (PvP) fights like castle sieges. However, the process of building and leveling characters can be a very long and frankly tedious process in Lineage II, which may serve as a barrier for letting a much larger group of potential customers to fully enjoy our game. While in the past the developers in Korea have continually built the game with this hardcore mentality firmly set, with the release of Gracia, they’ve completely changed the rules and made Lineage II even better and a lot more fun.

The big change is that leveling a Lineage II character is now extremely easier—and we say “extremely” in a fairly conservative manner. A normal new character that goes through the beginning quests can gain a few levels in just a few minutes, and players should find leveling now quite easily, all the way up to level 60 and beyond. Players that could spend several months of hardcore grinding to get up to a competitively high level will now be able to accomplish the same feat perhaps a month, if not less. They’ll also be able to get to their occupation changes a lot faster, so developing a selection of specialized characters is a much more realistic option. Building characters is now a lot fun and easy to do, rather than a long-term activity many players would rather do without. This drastic change in leveling is due to several factors.

For one thing, experience rewards for killing creatures and accomplishing quests has been increased across the board. This means that you’ll gain a lot more for generally doing the same things you always do. Running out of quests trying to gain experience, or continual creature farming, is not nearly as big of a factor any more. Also, new repetitive quests have been added in each race village to help out players even further.

We’re also introducing a cool new Vitality system. For one thing, you accumulate Vitality for not being logged in. You can also get Vitality points by staying in a peace zone, or by hunting raid or boss monsters (you’ll get a percentage of your earned raid points in Vitality points). New characters and existing characters before the update goes live also start out with the maximum number of Vitality points.

So what do you do with Vitality points? You consume Vitality when you kill ordinary creatures and gain experience, though Vitality won’t get spent if you’re taking on a quest creature, if you don’t get experience for killing a creature, or if you’re taking on a boss. When Vitality is spent, your experience and SP bonus is greatly increased, depending on how much Vitality you currently have. If you’re maxed out in Vitality points (Vitality Level 4), your bonus will be 300% of the normal experience and SP gain. If you have a few thousand Vitality points (Vitality Level 1), the bonus is 150%. Because Vitality is so easy to earn, players will be in the bonus consistently and the overall experience gain can be huge.

To help characters level even more, the buffs available to low-level beginning players can now be used all the way to level 62, and we’ve even added a few more buffs for players to use. These buffs like Haste and Vampiric Rage help out tremendously in dealing with Lineage II’s various creatures and quests, and makes solo play a lot easier.

With Gracia, Lineage II is now a lot easier to play, and the level barrier is not nearly as tough as it used to be. Players will be able to get to the high levels relatively quickly, and can enjoy some of the best parts of the game like PvP and castle sieges without having to spend a huge amount of time getting there.
