Moshi Monsters, by MindCandy, is primarily for kids. I questioned posting about it here, but the game is pretty to look at and might be interesting to some. Also, MindCandy is known for engaging products. Game play is centered around your adopted monster. You care for your monster via puzzle games that award currency, feeding, customizing it's room, and generally interacting with it. Monsters can also interact with each other, via adding your friends to a friends list.

The project isn't yet abandoned or anything like that. The reason why nothing has been happening here is due to my own ill health. Due to my current health things have been slow, with things about to slow down even more due to some other commitments of mine.

That being said the game has started being programmed. The planning stage is almost over, with only minor details yet to be confirmed.

Now for a mini announcement, a mini game will be released within the next couple of months. Don't get too excited though, it won't be anything fancy or graphical. So what will it be? it will simply be the Japanese word randomizer with a modified version of word learner.

All that means is that it will ask you a series of words to translate from japanese into english, it will track how your learning is going and put in new words when you are ready. That is all it will do, nothing overly special but it adds very little extra time to programming (as well as drumming up some support for the project and allowing for some bug testing).

As always, if you need to contact me, do so by commenting this post or emailing me at: seraphsoft (at) gmail (dot) com

Okay, I’m not a fan of PvP on RuneScape. It’s mainly because combat is incredibly random

Okay, I'm not a fan of PvP on RuneScape. It's mainly because combat is incredibly random on there and even if you are, say, level 138 and you're fighting a level 90, luck could turn against the 138 and he'd lose. I guess that's the way of RuneScape but either way, there's a big hole in the game where the PvP used to be, and although I;m sure jagex is trying their very hardest to fil the gap, that gap's become a sort of black hole and instead of filling up with FOG, BH and Clan Wars, they're being sucked into nothingness and aren't really replacing the old Wilderness. Now, before I get a bunch of comments like "ya bring wildai back to RuinedScape!@", please, read on. I'm going to explain my idea of a PvP Minigame which, although melee only, includes new, unique poisons, dual-weilding and stealth. I call it "The Assassin's Ring".

The Assassin's Ring will be situated in Burthorpe. Four semi-invisible "Black-Rogues" will be standing around the back of Burthorpe Castle, guarding entrance to an ornately designed trapdoor. In order to proceed, you'll need to be at least 75 combat, with 50 agility or higher.

On entrance to this area, you'll notice straight away that it's dark, like the Zamorak GWD Area. It's an octagonal room, holding a central bank, two shops and a cave to the north.

The cave to the north is the main minigame area. The area is an abandoned city, it holds a fair number of broken houses, parks etc. All the kinds ofthings you'd expect to see in a city - only broken. The playing feild is aproximately the same size of Varrock, it is "dark" and player's white dots will appear on the minimap UNLESS a player is wearing a special cape. The main minigame area is strictly 1v1 combat.

1) Players enter the Assassin's Ring and are randomly placed in one of eight respawn areas. Respawn areas are randomly placed in a house, surrounded by a blue, glowing border. Clicking on this border will allow a player into the main fighting area.
2) Players will exit the spawning area, and have 10 seconds to run off or wait until they can fight. To prevent cheating, player's will be unable to kill any player who spawned in the same spawn as them for the first 10 minutes of the game.
3) When a player kills another player, their kill count goes up by one and they will recieve one to three "kill tokens" as a drop, depending on the level of the player they had killed. These can be used to recieve prizes outside of the ring.
4) When a player is killed by another player, they are sent to a random respawn point and given a 15 second "time-out" penalty before they can re-enter the game.
5) Games last for 30 minutes. At the end of this time, players are shown a table of where they ranked according to their kill:death ratio. The top 10% of all players will recieve an extra prize of 5 "Superiority Tokens" which can be exchanged for higher levelled rewards.

The bank is a normal bank. You can withdraw/deposit anything you like there.
The first shop is the Assassin's Supplies shop, it stocks;
- Smoke Tablet (500gp each//stackable): Will stun any nearby players for 2 seconds. They will be unable to move, but still able to attack.
- Poison Tablet (500gp each//stackable): Poisons any nearby players for 3 damage at the regular rate.
- Assassin's Rations (250gp each//non-stackable) - Heals 15, only usable in minigame area.

The second shop is the Assassins Prize Holder, he stocks three kinds of armour along with a few other cool items;

- Rogue's Bandana (50 Kill Tokens (KT)) (Tradable) - While worn, a player will recieve 5% attack and strength when fighting in the Assassin's Ring.
- Rogue's Gloves (75 KT) (Tradable) - Has aproximately the same stats as Adamant RFD Gloves.
- Rogue's Boots (75 KT) (Tradable) - Has aproximately the same stats as Adamant Boots.
- Rogue's Chain-Cape (100 KT) (Tradable) - Causes player's "white dot" to be hidden on the minimap.
- Rogue's Chainlegs (375 KT) (Non-Tradable) - Has aproximately the same defence stats as Mithril Platelegs, with the added bonus of 5% attack and strength when in Assassin's Ring.
- Rogue's Chainbody (500 KT) (Non-Tradable) - Has aproximately the same defence stats as Mithril Platebody, with the added bonus of 5% attack and strength when in Assassin's Ring.

The Rogue's Set has an effect, like a barrows set, when worn all together. Even if a player is outside of the Assassin's Ring, all effects will apply, though defence will be reduced by 10%.

- Veteran's Facemask (75 Kill Tokens (KT)) - When worn, a player will recieve 10% attack and strength when fighting a player in the Assassin's Ring. However, Defence will be reduced by 5%.
- Veteran's Gloves (110 KT) - Has aproximately the same stats as Rune RFD Gloves.
- Veteran's Boots (110 KT) - Has aproximately the same stats as Rune Boots.
- Veteran's Cloak (150 KT) - Causes a player's white dot to be invisible on the minimap, while also giving stats equal to an obsidian cape.
- Veteran's Amulet (185 KT) - Has aproximately equal stats to the Amulet of Glory and can be operated every 4 minutes to show all hidden white dots on the minimap for 30 seconds.
- Veteran's Ring (185 KT) - Offers medium protection against players using smoke or poison tablets. Gives a 25% chance of negating of negating any effect.
- Veteran's Scale-mail Legs (500 KT) - Has aproximately the same defence stats as Adamant Platelegs, with the added bonus of 10% attack and strength when in Assassin's Ring, but also reduces defence by 5%.
- Veteran's Scale-mail Body (750 KT) - Has aproximately the same defence stats as Adamant Platebody, with the added bonus of 10% attack and strength when in Assassin's Ring but also reduces defence by 5%.

The Veteran's Set effect is that if a player is outside of the Assassin's Ring, all effects will apply, including the 15% defence reduction. Also, all poison damage is reduced by 50%.

- Assassin's Mask (50 Superiority Tokens (ST) and 100 Kill Tokens (KT)) (Tradable) - Gives 15% to Attack and Strength while fighting a player in AR.
- Assassin's Gloves (75 ST and 150 KT) (Tradable) - Has aproximately the same stats as Dragon RFD Gloves.
- Assassin's Boots (75 ST and 150 KT) (Tradable) - Has aproximately the same stats as Dragon Boots.
- Assassin's D'Leather Cape (100 ST and 200 KT) (Tradable) - Hides player's white dot on the mini-map in AR while also giving stats equal to an untrimmed skillcape.
- Assassin's Pendant (250 ST) (Non-Tradable) - Gives stats equal to an Amulet of Fury and allows all players to be seen on the minimap to the wearer.
- Assassin's Signet (250 ST) (Non-Tradable) - Offers high protection against all kinds of special tablets and trinkets in AR. Gives a 50% chance of negating any effect.
- Assassin's Platelegs (375 ST and 750 KT) (Non-Tradable) - Has aproximately the same stats as Rune platelegs, but offers a 15% bonus to attack and strength but also reduces defence by 12.5%.
- Assassin's Platebody (500 ST and 1000 KT) (Non-Tradable) - Has aproximately the same stats as Rune platebody, but offers a 15% bonus to attack and strength but also reduces defence by 12.5%.

The Assassin's Set effect causes an extra 5% strength bonus and all item effects to work outside of AR, poison damage to be reduced by 50%.

As well as those, the Prize holder sells the following;

Rogue's Daggers (500 KT) (Non-Tradable) - The rogues daggers are a pair of special adamantite daggers which are used in both hands. They cannot be poisoned by regular poison, however, they attack at the speed of a dds special attack and can use the Lv1 Poisons.

Veteran's Daggers (1000 KT) (Non-Tradable) - The Vetaran's Daggers are a pair of special rune daggers which are used in both hands. They cannot be poisoned by regular poisons but attack at the same speed as a dds spec and can be poisoned using the Lv.2 AR Poisons.

Assassin's Daggers (1000 ST and 1000 KT) (Non-Tradable) - The Assassin's Daggers are a pair of special Dragon Daggers which are used in both hands. They cannot be poisoned by regular poisons but attack at the same speed as a dds spec and can be poisoned using the Lv.3 AR Poisons. These daggers do not have a special attack.

As well as the three sets of armour and weapons, the Prize Holder also sells the following orbs and poisons;

- Disease Orb (10 charges) (50KT) (Tradable) - Inflicts disease on a player every 15 seconds. Disease reduces any stat combination up to a total of -10.
- Impair Armour Orb (10 Charges) (50KT) (Tradable) - Reduces an opponents armour by 15-50% for 30 seconds.
- Zamorak Orb (10 charges) (50KT) (Tradable) - Inflicts 10-15% damage instantly on an opponent as well as reducing their defence by 15%.
- Saradomin Orb (10 Charges) (50KT) (Tradable) - Heals 10-15% health as well as increasing defence by 15%.
- Guthix Orb (10 Charges) (50KT) (Tradable) - Equalizes both player's HP. Can only be used once per opponent.

- Artificial Blindness Poison Lv.1, Lv.2 and Lv.3 (25, 50 and 75 ST Respectively) - Every 15 Seconds, the inflicted players loses 1, 2 or 3 ranged levels.
- Lobe Thinning Poison Lv.1, Lv.2 and Lv.3 (25, 50 and 75 ST Respectively) - Every 15 Seconds, the inflicted player loses 1, 2 or 3 magic levels.
- Sandy Eyes Poison Lv.1, Lv.2 and Lv.3 (25, 50 and 75 ST Respectively) - Every 15 Seconds, the inflicted players loses 1, 2 or 3 attack levels.
- Muscle Numbing Poison Lv.1, Lv.2 and Lv.3 (25, 50 and 75 ST Respectively) - Every 15 Seconds, the inflicted player loses 1, 2 or 3 strength levels.
- Skin Rotting Poison Lv.1, Lv.2 and Lv.3 (25, 50 and 75 ST Respectively) - Every 15 Seconds, the inflicted players loses 1, 2 or 3 defence levels.
- Unholy Poison Lv.1, Lv.2 and Lv.3 (25, 50 and 75 ST Respectively) - Every 15 Seconds, the inflicted player loses 1, 2 or 3 prayer points.

*All poisons can only inflict 25 players before having worn off of the weapon. These poisons may only be used on the special AR Daggers.

And that is my idea for a new PvP minigame, Assassin's Ring. It is meant to be a high level bloodbath with both great rewards an a place to make some money. Any feedback would be great,

Three Rings' Whirled is a minigame/social browser based mmo. The site offers a series of minigames, some original and some clones of other successful games, from which you can obtain in-game currency to use for decorating your "room" or purchasing a pet. Whirled offers a few unique features. You can embed your room, with your pet, into any website. You can create custom pets and avatars. Currently Whirled seems a sort of clone Puzzle Pirates, only the minigames are slightly more original and not quite pirate-based. However, the site is in open beta, which suggest room for much more expansion.

Peggle Extreme (lnk). Darmową oczywiście, bo inaczej bym jej nie pobrał. Chodzi o Peggla utrzymanego w stylistyce Half-Life'a 2, Team Fortress 2 i Portala (czyli sympatyczną reklamówkę The Orange Box). Widać to od samego początku - jednorożec z headcrabem na głowie w menu głównym to wyraźny sygnał, że nie ma się do czynienia z normalną grą. Tła plansz przedstawiają m.in. Vortiguanty, działka z TF2, Companion Cube'y i inne.

Walking trough a RPG world, you will certainly find some dungeons. These places are usually filled w

Walking trough a RPG world, you will certainly find some dungeons. These places are usually filled with monsters, mini-games or mysteries. But, what can you do with Dungeons? I tried to compile a list of types, contents and uses for these very specific places...

Layout of the Dungeon
The contents you will and can put in your dungeon are limited to the design of your creation. There are a few types of layout.

Linear
The most simple type of a dungeon is a path between entrance A and exit B. Such layout means that a player can not get lost, needs to accomplish everything that is in his way and failing to do so will block the progress of the player in the game. This type is mostly used as a pathway between two points of interest or key-events in the game, or as key-point in a story. This, however, does not mean you can't build in side-paths within this layout. Just make sure that the player returns to or close to the junction where he took the side-path.

Symmetric
The symmetric type of dungeon has many designs. Some design are well-known (e.g. the cubic design in some Zelda dungeons) and others are yet to be created. You can have a Symmetric-Linear dungeon, meaning there is a path between entrance A and exit B, but there is more then one way to take that path. Such layout will give the player more chance to accomplish his task, but has the problem that a main-story event is harder to implement inside the dungeon.

Another type of symmetry is a design that has a path to the left and one to the right at any point in the dungeon. Players can switch from path, meaning they can accomplish their task by choosing the path they think is the most easy one. That is also the downside. In most cases, there's a common thought on what is easy and therefor, half of your dungeon won't be played.

Non-Linear
Anything else will be considered non-linear. Optionally there are multiple entrances and multiple exists. Some roads are dead-ends and any type of symmetry is lost. Players easily get lost in these dungeons, but don't lose the encouragement to play, because new areas can be found over and over. The main advantage is that you can easily enter side-quests, mini-games and secret areas. Please note that these dungeons don't need to lead you from point A to B. There can be a route from A to B, but that is not the main intention.

Off course this is my view on that subject. Sure you can come up with more categories, but I think that all dungeons can be categorized within these three types.

Purpose of the Dungeon
I think this point is often missed and yet very vital. A dungeon is usually unlike a cave build by humans. This means that a dungeon had a function in the end. What I am trying to say is that you can't just drop a dungeon everywhere, without reason.

Travellers purpose
A very simple and much used purpose of a dungeon is providing a relatively safe and rather short route between point A and point B. I call this the travellers purpose. This also means that there is a relationship between point A and point B, meaning that you have to write some background story on why these two points had to be connected. Also, this type of dungeon normally comes with the Linear layout.

Resources purpose
Another very easy to understand purpose is the one that involves resource gathering. Perhaps the people living just outside this dungeon where mining the place, large dungeons or found the perfect habitation for some species of plants that provide some medical use. Perhaps it is a cave with an underground river or lake that provides clean water. This type of dungeon is, don't bother the exception, always a Non-Linear dungeon. There is no reason to have an exit at the other side of the mountain, or making a safe pathway.

Hide-out purpose
This purpose usually comes in areas with no society's nearby. People have hidden or are hiding themselves for whatever reason in this dungeon. These dungeons are rather small, not easy to reach and stuffed with goodies like weapons and so on. (However, the dragon's lair, which falls under this purpose, can be large, and without goodies.)

Lock-down purpose
People always try to lock things away. One type having this purpose is the jail-dungeon. It is used to lock-down people. Then you have the evil-creature-dungeon, in which people have put away their miscreations or dangerous monsters. You can also lock down mysterious objects or large treasures. When using this dungeon, make it clear to the player why these things are put away from the land of light and living.

Contents of the Dungeon
The contents are one of the most vital things in your dungeon. How boring is an empty dungeon? Exactly, Alt-F4-boring.

Monsters in the Dungeon
Monsters can be found in 90 percent, if it isn't more, of the dungeons out there. They provide you a way to gain experience and yet raise the difficulty of accomplishing the players task. There are some things you should think off, before you crowd your dungeon:

Penguins don't live in fire-caves, don't put Magmar in a water-cave. Think about the environment before you put in your monsters. This means the following:

The temperature and climate are both very vital to what can survive.

Big creatures won't survive small areas. They need living space.

Small creatures often come in groups. Don't put in just 2 mice.

Creatures need to eat, provide them with environment like plants, water.

The monsters strength should not be altered too match some linear difficulty. The strength is bound to the environment and the number of creatures living in the same area. It is a misunderstanding that a linear rise in difficulty is the best you can have. In fact, it is one of the worst. Not only will the player get bored, he also is not rewarded. This is because when he defeated those in dungeon A, he already knows that he needs to buy all weapons in the stores between dungeon A and B in order to defeat the monsters in dungeon B in the same time with the same feeling.

Reward the player by making them a little bit less difficult to defeat,

or raise the levels of the creatures to surprise the player.

Puzzles in the Dungeon
Puzzles can be vital for player experience. These are the parts where you don't need to battle anymore, but need to concentrate on the problem that is given. It adds fun and change to your game. Also, if your puzzle is typical for your story, it might become a point of recognition. However, take in mind that it is weird to have a puzzle midst some creatures living space or in a travellers route. Here are a few much used concepts:

Push Objects
Rather easy to make and can be hard to solve. The player gets a number of pushable objects which are placed in an environment with obstacles. In order to win, the player needs to reach a point by push the objects aside, or in holes or on switches.

Press Switches
In order to open a door or to continue, swithces must be pressed. This has a result that something changes like lightsgoing on, or other swithces change state. Many variations are possible.

Raise Water-level
In order to continue, one needs to raise or lower the level of the water by turning some water streams on and some of by turning switches.

Turn Bridges
The player sees some platform and on each platfrom there can be one or more switches. By pressing a switch, a bridge, or more then one turns. The player wins if he reaches the other side.

Evade Hazards
Some more action typed puzzle and minigame is the one where you need to evade some nasty hazards. The player needs to get to the other side, without getting killed. hink of fire from the wall or gound, breaking ice, boulders that roll, spikes from the ground, doors that fall down, moving platforms...

Ride Mine-cart
A special type of evading hazards can be the mine-cart minigame or puzzle. The player needs to stay on track and avoid obstacles. The number of obstacles, speed of the cart and number of junctions and turns define the hardness of this minigame/puzzle.

Jump Pillars
The player wins if he reaches the other side, and he can do this by jumping pillars that are exactly [x] spaces away form the place he stands at that moment. Add some hazards and objects to make this puzzle more interessting, but it's always easy to implement, even in a linear dungeon as you can always say: The ground collapsed. Just kidding. I meant to say that this type can be implemented almost everywhere.

Solve Labyrinth
Just like Jump Pillars, this type of puzzle is very easy to make, and not hard to implement. However, try to make it fun. A long tiring labyrinth won't do the player and his player experience any good!

Solve Riddles
A very widely ranged, almost always fun type of puzzle is the one where you need to solve a riddle. You can execute this idea in almost any way. Tellt he player which doors to take, which way to go, what pillars to jump, what item to buy, what equipment to wear, but then encrypted in a mysterious message.

The key to succes with the puzzles I stated above is to make them your own. You have to make it fit in the story or area in your game. It has to activate the players thought in such way that he thinks "nice puzzle" and not "this has been done in that and that and that game".

Secrets in the Dungeon
Having secrets is very common. So I am not going to say much about this, except for the following. Whenever you put in a secret, it is very very important that you match the reward with the energy and time it took for the player to obtain it.

Direct Item Reward
Giving an item can be a type op positive and negative reward. If the item matches the energy and time it took for the player to obtain it, it will be considered positive. However if you give the player an item that is so prehistoric he can't even sell it, it will piss him off alot!

Indirect Item Reward
Giving a direction to where an item can be obtained can be a very nice move to keep the player moving, but consider the fact that he won't appreciate this if he already did a lot to get to this place of reward and then needs to do even more to get an item he knows nothing about. If you do give such a direction, give the player the option to not go and obtain the item by telling or hinting him what it is, ór by sending the player close to the place of obtainment directly.

Cash Reward
I think this is one of the worst rewards you can get. I rather kill some monsters or sell some monsters skin. A cash reward is good for small archievements, but not for head-breaking puzzles. Don't always make it yourself too easy.

Story Reward
A very interessting type of reward is the one where you get a piece of background story or a sidequest to do. Please note that you will certainly enlighten the type of player that likes to know everything about the world he is in, but won't encourage the type of player that wants to finish the game as quickly as possible of playing any further.

Negative Reward
If the player cheated on a puzzle or minigame or you want to tell him he is going in the wrong direction, you can give him a negative reward. This can be (e.g.) a cash reward of very litle cash, a prehistoric item reward, an instant damage reward or a monster for free. Don't do this to often. It makes the player feel bad about hmiself and the game and makes him stop playing in the end!

Some last notes on Dungeons
I am just trying to let you know the things I think player experience is about. It is mainly, in this dungeon case, implementing that puzzle in the story in such way you don't glue your story with puzzles, but glue your puzzles with story. It increases the fun, uniqueness and orginality of a game.

Don't think that using old puzzle concepts is bad. It is the way you put them in that counts for how the player will react on it. Just keep trying and testing and ask for some opinion on a regular base.

As some of you have probably noticed, there are lots of new pages to this blog! As well as Sonic30132's winning idea of a Minigames page, there is my new network of pages called 'Bodge Library.' As you'd expect with a project of this size, I've run into some minor problems in getting it running. It will be a while before it is fully operational, but most of it's working just fine. You're welcome to visit any part of it- and it won't damage your computer because the problem isn't a virus, it's just a problem with URL. I won't go into too much detail, but most of the guides aren't working.
Until next time..
Waddle on!
