Rock Hard

When I saw local classic rock covers bands Blue Fuses and, later, Foulplay playing gigs at pubs in Egham and Staines on a Saturday night I started to realise that ‘looking like a hardnut’ helps a workaday rock muso, in their daily grind, to get
through the concert without mishap. For example, once you ‘come off stage’ gasping for a pint and maybe a smoke and you will need to stroll through an often hostile audience, whose temperament may not be awfully well disposed to you, to get to the bar for a little drink. In these circumstances, it pays if you don’t flounce through the bar-room wearing a one-piece pink shrug and nylon leotard looking like Darkness singer/guitarist Justin Hawkins. It also helps if you look a bit more authentic (auf-fentik) wearing, maybe, a sombre pair of dirty jeans and a plain T shirt, a bit of 24 hour old fungus on yer chops and a swagger that says, “do you want some, mate?” Obviously, if there are ladies at the venue, you are likely to get a drink from one of these admirers...but this will also invoke ill-feeling from the other alpha males in the room who will, naturally, suppose you are “out to get their birds” and give you ‘a good seeing to’. All of these complications are far more exaggerated if you are playing a working man’s club or a drinkers boozer and all the punters at the establishment have an-inbuilt and overwhelming desire to “give you a good kicking” because you are a fairy, you are a nonce and you are a general neer-do-well.

So I have come up with a strategy for all you budding rockers out there who hope to get through to ‘last orders’ without having the contents of your nose splattered all over the flock wallpaper. I hope it helps you to enjoy your concert safe in the knowledge and belief that you will be able to go out into the crowd for half-time drinks and puffs without fear of a bottle being cracked over your head or, at the very least, being ‘accidently’ tripped-up (ha! ha!) as you head back from the bar with a tray load of drinks for your bandmates.

Before I begin on Rock Hard 101, I do need to define ‘hardness’. To the average British geezer a person who is ‘rock hard’ is anyone who can give a slap, if required, to a recalcitrant yob who jogs his arm ‘accidently’ as he passes. Or who can wink at a lay-dee but who has the good grace to nod understandingly to the lay-dee’s bloke when he notices. Who can drink 2-3 pints in an interval. Who swaggers to the bog like a cross between John Wayne and Dr Dre and, upon entering said shite-house, swings the door of the bog so violently that it almost tears it off of its hinges. Who rolls his own. Who buys his own pints (and never drinks bottles of ‘poof’ drinks like juice.) Who wears a few livid battle scars on his face and/or arms. Who looks like he can ‘handle himself’ in a bundle. Who talks the talk and, far more importantly, walks the walk.

[The Kinks- dirty student scroungers!]

Lesson 1 - hair

It is best by starting out on this lesson by saying that long hair is a no-no. I know you like it and you need it long so that you can headbang - but most of the gents in the quintessential British boozer either have NO HAIR or have No. 1 cuts.

Their attitude is that any man who has long hair is a hippy and is gay. They also have firm opinions about the cleanliness of long hair... so Bob Marley would not be welcome (notwithstanding his general ‘hardness’) because of his long, dirty,
dreads. Neither would Who vocalist Roger Daltrey during his ‘Tommy’ days because of his frothy head of golden bubbles. Although, Roger would be more welcome nowadays because he has almost gone bald.

[Who- Frothy head of bubbles not welcome!]

Lesson 2 - clothes

The Kinks circa 1970 would not be considered rock hard because of their long hippy hair. [See above.] But, worse, their clothes scream-out ‘dirty student scrounger’ and so they would not be welcomed. Neither do you want your clothes to mark you out as some kind of intellectual ‘arty-farty’ prat. So Booker T. & the M.G.’s would not be welcome in any Middlesex public bar and neither would Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Your choice of clothes should either be a) understated and similar to the clientele’s own George at Asda-type choice or b) way over the top and military in attitude. The circa 1966 Yardbirds would be very welcome because their style is understated (their hair could do with a wash and a cut though) as long as they left Eric Clapton at home- he often looked like a bit of a hippy. Nowadays Eric looks too ‘posh’ and so would be given a few smacks just for being ‘a rich city banker’ or words to that effect. In the early 1970’s the band Slade looked the part. In those days, before glam, glitter, top hats and stupid heels, this band looked like what they were... a bunch of brummie hard-nuts with a grudge to settle. In those days you would offer to buy them a drink if they strolled into your bar, not just because you wanted to get ‘in’ with the lads but because you feared for your own safety if you did not.

[Slade- buy them a drink- or else!]

Lesson 3 - T shirt

Noel Jones (lead singer with Blue Fuses) wore a sensible Black Pudding T-shirt to his recent Staines Working Mans club gig the other month. Last Saturday, at the Crown Egham, Noel chose to wear a footie shirt. Another good choice. It is what I call a ‘camoflage’ choice. If all the punters and punteresses in the pub are football fans you need to blend in. Obviously, a good knowledge of soccer is required in this case or you could make an almighty blunder. However, I have also seen Noel wearing a Cradle of Filth T-shirt in the past and this kind of shirt would be strictly a no-no in the saloon bar at The Crown. Not only has this type of T-shirt got witchcraft connotations, it also says ‘I am a weird beard and I need my head to be kicked in’ to all the regular drinkers. So here are a few simple rules about your choice of shirt. a) never wear pink (too poofy); b) never wear sleeveless shirts unless you are a hip-hop star or a rapper (too poofy); c) never wear a ‘funny’T shirt (they won’t like the joke).

[Yardbirds- leave Eric at home!]

Lesson 4 - build

Fat bastards, on the whole, look mean and aggressive ...but...all the geezers in the pub know that they can ‘take you’ easily because you are out of condition. They like to quote Michael Caine in Get Carter ‘You are a big boy, I know, but you’re out of condition, one hit and you’re down’. Plus, the downside of being ‘of comfortable build’ is that you are less attractive to the lay-dees. So, although Meat Loaf is one big tough slab of meat, he would not be welcome in my pub on the corner because he is a fat git with long hair and stupid ill-fitting pink-hemmed suit. However, Buster Bloodvessel aka Doug Trendle is just a normal beer-drinking fat bloke who wears sensible clothes and has got a ‘boiled head’ (i.e. a boiled egg in the place of a head of hair.) So it is how you make your build work for you that counts. Mama Cass Elliot would also have been very welcome in The Wheatsheaf & Pigeon any time because she is just a normal fat bird with everyday jumble-sale clothes and a big appetite.

Lesson 5- facial hair

Neither Billy Gibbons nor Dusty Hill would be welcome in my local because they both look like Santa Claus on a night off. Your choice of facial hair should not be too gay (Freddie) or too outrageous (Frank Zappa). Frank may well have looked like a
mean sonofabitch back in the day but your eyes would keep being drawn back to the dead hamsters beneath his beady eyes. In the end you would just have to ‘give him a good kicking’ because of his ‘stupid poncy tash’. It is best to keep your choice of facial hair to a minimum. Stubble is great (remember how masculine everyone thought George Michael was back in his Wham! days with his stubble?) Full-on face covering, beards (like The Beach Boys in 15 Big Ones ) make you look scary and killer-like (Charles Manson) or, worse, may make you look like Rolf Harris.

[Beach Boys- killer beards?]

Lesson 6- swagger

Your swagger as you cross the bar is more important than anything else. If you sway across the room in a pink dress teetering on vertiginous high-heels and you look like that fairy Rob Davis out of Mud you will probably get your face kicked in. But you can pull it off if you look like David Daniel “Dee” Snider (Twisted Sister) because, although you are wearing a frock and make-up, you swagger up to the bar looking like a Polish scaffolder on his night off... as if you mean business.

[Dee Sinder- fairy with swagger?]

Conclusion

Lemmy (out of motorhead) is a man’s man. Warts, Nazi clothing, grizzled features, swagger, worn out thin build and a F*** You attitude.

He is the personification of Rock Hard.

Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct Thor for Marvel Studios, reports Variety. The comic book adaptation is scheduled for a June 4, 2010 release.

Thor, written by Mark Protosevich, follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.

Read more HERE.

It's been a bit since I've seen BRANAGH in movies like HAMLET, OTHELLO, and CONSPIRACY (the latter being my one of my favorite WW2 movies) but I think MARVEL is definitely on the right track with a THOR movie. There's no doubt BRANAGH's master of Shakespeare will come in handy when interpreting the Norse God of Thunder but I wonder about the whole Donald Blake alter-ego being reimagined and if it can work. I'm guessing most producers involved would assume that the human element is needed to make a better connection with audiences. Then again, an all out Force of Nature and what drives it could be an interesting approach as well.

My choice of storyline would be busting into Walt Simonson's 'Ragnarok' storyline from the mid 80's but I could see that going REALLY bad REALLY fast if done wrong. Simply too much to cram into what I assume will be an all out action first-story second a la the new HULK movie (which actually worked) or maybe the NBC HEROES series (which I think doesn't work as well).

Since the whole point here is an introduction and then the big AVENGER's team up movie, each hero (IRON MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA etc.) getting some breathing room in their own separate installment should amount to some good pacing for character development.

Vastauksen antoi Michael Caine.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Yes. And?"][/caption]

What gives? David Blaine has dared to do the impossible: hang upside-down 44 feet above the ground for 60 hours. Colour me underwhelmed. I never realized magicians were taking notes from beer-addled fraternity initiation rites.

Then I checked his wiki, which lists him as a magician and an "endurance artist". Trekking to the North Pole and back without a thermos is endurance art. Swimming across the English Channel, while being an ass backwards stupid stunt to pull what with all the pollution white people eating curry with warm beer (not to mention frogs' legs, on the other side) chuck into the ocean, is endurance art. Hanging upside down in New York City for a day and a half is losing a bet with Will Ferrell.

How do you lose a bet with Will Ferrell?

I like his street magic. I do. It's a fresh take on the same old shit magicians who just can't get over their inferiority complex vis a vis David Copperfield (who is evil incarnate, by the way) half-heartedly pull in tuxedos on a stage with a drawn red curtain and several dead pigeons under their draped high tables. That's right - I saw The Prestige, and I can find no surmountable evidence to lead me to believe what Michael Caine and Wolverine and Batman showed about the vanishing birdcage is bullshit. So there. It's inhumane. I'd rather see a coked up Armenian - I know he's not Armenian, but he looks like he could hang with System Of A Down - and some well-paid "passersby" all pretend a man can levitate of the fucking sidewalk. That shitload of coins emerging from a bum's coffee cup trick is pretty neat too. You pretty much know it's all a sham, but you also marvel at the man's technique - and yes, his deadpan gimme-an-ounce-please-I'll-pay-you-next-week-I-swear expression. Shit is entertaining, son.

But his endurance stunts - man. Standing on a pole for 35 hours was cool, I'll give him that. Freezing his ace of spades off in a block of ice? Sitting in a plastic box for a few days? Not so much. And now he's hanging upside down for a day and a half - and he's not even doing it for 60 hours straight.

*zip*

I just saw this shit. His Dive of Death, Leap of Lethality, Hop of Holyshitthisisembarrassing. Wait for 2:00.

Fuck saying anything else about this fool. Here's David Blaine, for real:

The fuck outta here.

As I posted in a previous ThrallWorld blog re: the legal issues surrounding WARNER BROTHERS and FOX over the rights to THE WATCHMEN movie, I took a stab in the dark about ALAN MOORE's possible take on the situation. ALAN MOORE has a very legitimate point in the medium wars between comic books and movies.

Read a detailed account on ALAN MOORE's take on all of this HERE.

While I am looking forward to ZACH SNYDER's take on THE WATCHMEN, I have spotted a red flag or two in the trailer. Number one being how the graphic novel always portrayed the character Nite Owl as a bit frumpy and washed up. The costumes might be a little pro-ish and modernish (the story takes place in the mid to late 1980's) for the rag tag super hero crew Moore was portraying in his tale.

There's a lot of layers in the MOORE story that will obviously be lost in the movie adaptation. But it is after all an adaptation so we'll see where SNYDER ends up with the final cut.

Año: 2005

Director: Gore Verbinski

Reparto: Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, Hope Davis

* EDIZIONE DVD
Bat Tech (documentario)
Back to Batman (speciale EC)
Mad Love motion comics

* EDIZIONE BLU-RAY
Gotham Tonight by comcast
The Dark Knight Unmasked (documentario di 44)
Bat Tech (documentario)
Back to Batman (speciale EC)
Mad Love motion comics

I think it's way to soon to talk about having WAR MACHINE in the second sequel. Especially with only a 2-3 movies to develop TONY STARK's character. I'm very familiar with Rhodey taking over the suit when Starks alcoholism got the best of him. I just think it will undermine the character if you try and jam that in there in the second movie. Give the character a chance to show why he dominates the entire Marvel Universe for at least two movies.

All depends on the writing I suppose.
Dark Knight, The
[ 4 stars out of 4 ]

Do I think this is the best superhero movie ever made and in comparison to what? Yes, I think it is the best superhero ever made (as of July 2008) and it's about five times better than the great "Spider-man 2." Do I think this is one of the best films of the 2000's? Yes, I do because it not only works as a first-rate superhero film, it also works as a gritty suspense-crime thriller (some scenes are as heart-pounding as "The Departed") influenced with noir films from the mid to late 1950's (such as "The Killing").

That said, I am both impressed and mildly disappointed with "The Dark Knight." I have two reasons why I was disappointed: the film was not I expected it to be and the so-called twists in the story weren't twists for me at all because I'm very familiar with the story of Batman along with the citizens and villains of Gotham City. I know the director, Christopher Nolan, means well when it comes to closely following the story of Batman; however, that comes with a price: the movie became almost too predictable. (Don't get me wrong--I love the fact that Nolan is sticking close to the mythology and providing us great movies for my favorite superhero.) So, when certain events happen, I was sometimes apathetic to them because I knew whether a character will die or live to fight another day. But I emphasize this: some of the twists I did not see coming at all, so those few unpredictable twists almost make up for the shortcomings.

Jumping back to first reason why I was slightly disappointed, I expected the film to be more like the first movie. I wanted to know more about Bruce Wayne's childhood and his relationship with his parents. I wanted a structure--a solid beginning, middle, and end. This film feels like one action scene after another--kind of like a long middle, if you will. On the other hand, that is not exactly a bad thing because a lack of structure and chaos is what this movie is aiming for, kind of like what the Joker is all about. And that's why I think this film is so brilliant: the thing I don't like about it is so fitting; it's feels so wrong to me but it feels so right when it comes to the movie's ongoing theme. Also, one could argue that this is a continuation of "Batman Begins" so a beginning is not necessary and neither is an ending because the next chapter is yet to come.

As for the actors, Christian Bale solidified himself as the best Batman because he was able to play his character with such complexity by having a gray moral compass. Although his intentions are good, the repercussions of his actions are sometimes negative. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a big improvement from Katie Holmes by playing Rachel Dawes, who is torn between two lovers. While Holmes comes off as whiny and irksome, Gyllenhaal is tough but vulnerable. Aaron Eckhart effectively showcases a character that supports the Joker's hypothesis. Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine were actually given more important roles this time around so their characters are able to grow and the audience can understand their motivations a bit better. I just have to mention Cillian Murphy's return as the Scarecrow, despite his small screen time, because he was completely brilliant as a once major villain turned into an ordinary criminal. Not only does his return tie up some loose ends from "Batman Begins," his return reminds us that Scarecrow is child's play compared to what the Joker is about to bring to Gotham City. If one is familiar with the mythology, it could be a hint (or serve as a ripple effect--a statement regarding the circular nature of the Batman universe) on what could happen in the third movie. Last but not least, Heath Ledger did an excellent job as the Joker. Ever since I was younger, I've always thought of the Joker as menacing more than anything else; the laughs come in BECAUSE his actions are so cruel and sadistic to the point where it's darkly comic, NOT the other way around.

Actors who've played Joker in the past often make that dire mistake of being funny more than half of the time. Ledger understood the Joker's core: he introduces chaos to the world for no reason. As one character gravely stated, "Some men just want to watch the world burn." Those characters often make the most terrifying and memorable villains. Since their motivations are unknown and they have nothing to lose, that evil can never be purged. Ledger's performance definitely reminded me of the ultra-violent Alex in "A Clockwork Orange." Do I think Ledger deserves at least an Oscar nomination for his role as the Joker? Most definitely. Does he deserve to win? Maybe. Only time will tell until or if someone else can do a better job playing a supporting actor role.

It was a great pleasure watching "The Dark Knight" despite its flaws because I knew that my favourite superhero's story is finally told with such focus, complexity, and heart. I can only hope that the next film will be just as good as "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight."

So I finally saw this movie...
After trying to rent it at a variety of spots that never had it, I found a copy at Movie Trading Company. The first time I found one there it was $9 and I figured for a VHS I could wait, but a few days ago I went back and it was $4 - a price a couldn't refuse. Especially for a movie that I'd been wanting to see.
Blame it on Rio, is great.
I originally wanted to see it for two reasons:
1) all the boobs
2) Michael Caine
But while those two reasons definitely help, there's much more to the film.
Watch this gem from 1984 and you wont be disappointed.

And Michelle Johnson....HOTTIE!

In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego:'Batman', a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

Co-written by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of Spider-Man 2 (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. --David Horiuchi

The masculine ego untamed by conscience needs both a friendly playground populated with willing young women and a good bludgeoning to keep its hands off my sister. This was a surprisingly good film given the synopsis, relentlessly detailing the curse on Woman that leaves her always longing for her husband, even when he's in the next room ignoring her. Luckily for the accursèd sex, Alfie's typical brushing off eventually wears on his body — — strike one for the egoist. This is as near a film comes to being about Narcissism as we're going to get, but stops just short — — Michael Caine smoothly makes mortality seem like a real threat in a role that Oscar Wilde would have at least admired, even if he would have hated the dialogue.
