MGMT recently released their epic psychedelic song "Metanoia" on Itunes this past month. I love this band and it is one of their best live tracks. Their album Oracular Spectacular is one of the best albums to come out this year. This band from Wesleyan is defined as psychedlic synthpop for the most part, yet "Metanoia" is them at their psychedlic strongest. This recent release is basically their band's answer to "Bohemian Rhapsody" with a touch more Pink Floyd. Although I cannot post the track in its entirety, here are a couple of youtube streams that encompass the entire track.

To opowieść długa i smutna. Był to już rok 2008. Paweuu wykurwiony po szkole siedział z nudów przed telewizorem. Zapodał sobie MTV2. Akurat leciał program z nową muzą. Spanking New Music. W pewnym momencie puścili pierwszy singiel MGMT. Paweuu patrzy. Same dobre oceny. Przeczytał, że fajnie grają na koncertach. Dowiedział się, że warto posłuchać. Paweuu zdobył płytę, przesłuchał i zmienił zdanie. I żył długo i nieszczęśliwie. Fin

Mi najbardziej przypadł do gustu "Kids" oraz "The Youth".

Z miasta The Strokes, Interpolu, LCD Soundsystem i innych wymiataczy na rynku.

Grupo a seguir, sobre todo las canciones Great DJ y Shut up and let me go, muy recomendables.

MGMT - Time to pretend

[audio=" http://www.goear.com/files/sst4/b3bbfba2ee303040df9fa0198fd83d87.mp3"]

Ok, I said I was going to write this weeks ago but I've been fairly occupied with...well, life. Luckily I have a gap in my busy schedule so I can get part 2 of this 3-part miniseries underway.

We woke up early Saturday morning, knowing we had to catch the 10:40 train if we wanted to get downtown in time to mingle a bit before the shows started. We didn't have a whole lot of time because The Ting Tings were coming on at 12:45...quite the early start. The train was about 20 minutes late but no big deal, we had given ourselves plenty of time in case of a delay. We hop on the train and head to Union Station, excited about the promising day ahead.

When we unboarded the train, the first thing that I noticed was that it wasn't hot. At all. Seeing as how I despise hot, muggy weather, I was stoked. I checked my watch. 11:30. Nice. We had over an hour to walk the lovely mile to Grant Park. I didn't find out about the inner city trains until we were actually leaving, but it was irrelevant because we were loving the daily trek through the city. We decide that it would be a good opportunity to grab a bite to eat, so we stop by a small sandwich shop (don't recall the name but they are on every other corner in Chicago) and grab some subs then hit the 7-11 on the way and grab a Red Bull for some energy, though it wouldn't really be needed. We finally reach the gates where we got to skip through the lines and walk right in since we were smart and had gotten 3-day passes. Sweet.

We had studied the schedule quite closely ahead of time and realized that Saturday, for our particular tastes, was going to be nuts. It's pretty easy to plan a run of festival stages on paper, but once you get there and acutally live it, it's hard to keep said schedule. We make our way to the North (AT&T) Stage to catch The Ting Tings. At this point I had not listened to them a whole lot but Lauren was really into them so I had heard them a decent amount. I thought they were catchy before we saw them but I wasn't ready for what transpired next. I liked them...and I mean REALLY liked them. Their live show was incredible and none of their sound was lost, even on a main festival stage. One of my favorite performances of the weekend, quite honestly. We grooved our asses off while standing on our vinyl picnic table covers (wonderful insight...much better than a blanket that will get dirty. We just left it at the end of the weekend.). If you've heard their debut album then you know how well they capture the pop essence without making it cheesy. Shit was rad.

[caption id="attachment_655" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="The Ting Tings"][/caption]

The Ting Tings Setlist:

We Walk
Great DJ
Fruit Machine
Keep Your Head
Be The One
That's Not My Name
We Started Nothing
Shut Up & Let Me Go

We had realized when planning out the day that there were a lot of acts that we wanted to kind of catch on that side of the park. Luckily for us the two stages were in the same field, so there was little walking required to get where we were trying to go. I had heard one of Dr. Dog's records from a friend of mine and thought they were pretty good, so we decided to hang out and check them out from a distance. We pulled up a nicely shaded patch of grass with a fence to lean against and made sure we got a good view of the MySpace Stage. This wasn't Bonnaroo, so it was nice to not have to worry about sitting in piss (hippies are notorious for pissing on fences at festivals). We were probably about 100 yards away, but it was loud so hearing was not an issue...it was loud and crystal clear. They didn't have my undivided attention but they were quite good...great music to sit with the group and chill out to. They played for an hour and then The Gutter Twins took the main stage.

When I was a younger lad in the 90's, I was a fan of The Afghan Whigs and Screaming Trees. The thought had never crossed my mind that Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan might actually start a band together. I had heard a bit about the group, but nothing specific (i.e. whether it was good). We stayed in our lovely little spot in the grass and listened from afar. It was about as good as I expected, nothing great but if I ran across it on the radio I wouldn't change it. They didn't move much on stage though. I'm pretty sure they were disinterested in the gig or the crowd...maybe both.

It was now 3:30. Time for one of the most targeted acts of the weekend for the group...MGMT. We had all been wearing their newest record, Oracular Spectacular, out since around January and were stoked to see them. I had heard mixed reviews on their shows...some thought they were amazing while others thought they were incredibly dull and needed more time to develop their live act. One thing is for sure: they are NOT lacking in popularity. Other than the headliners, this was easily the most crowded show of the weekend. I have no idea how many folks showed up for this, but I'm guessing at least half the festival attendees had shown up to this performance. Andrew VanWyngarden (half of the songwriting duo in the band and lead vocalist/guitar) even commented twice on the size of the crowd, once saying "Wow, there are a lot of people here..." and later, "Thanks guys, we're Radiohead!" People were lined up from the stage all the way back to the fence. There was no room to do anything other than dance, so dance we did...and a lot. They played all ten songs off of the record, and regardless of how polished they were, the show was an absolute blast. Easily one of the best shows of the entire festival for me and my friends. They opened with "Of Moons, Birds and Monsters", a song we had been wearing out on the drive up. They played everything else in between and closed with "Kids", which had nearly every person in attendance jumping up and down in unison. Can't wait to see these guys again. Once they were done Lauren and I split from Grayson and Rachell and started our half-mile journey to catch the second half of Explosions in the Sky.

We hit up the bathroom on the way to the North (Bud Light) Stage, which was quite a bitch to get to because of the sheer density of the crowd leaving the MGMT set. Once we actually get to the port-o-lets, they are somewhat crowded but not too bad...about a 10-15 minute wait in line if I remember correctly. Somehow we still get to EITS halfway through their set which leaves us 30 minutes of post-rock listening pleasure. I hear "Your Hand In Mine" in the distance, start acting like a fucking fool and quicken the pace. We finally reach the stage where they are performing and decide to take a seat a little farther back than originally intended, due to the size of the crowd and the fact that we were pretty fucking hungry and didn't want to fight the crowd to get to sustenance when the set was over. One thing about EITS: if you haven't listened to much of them their songs can bleed together. Most post-rock bands tend to turn the volume up to 11 and they were no exception...even from a nice distance back they were still really, really loud. They proceeded to rip through "Have You Passed Through This Night", "Memorial", and "The Only Moment We Were Alone". It was brilliant. At the end of the last song they all fell down on their asses from rocking so hard. Pretty intense I must say. Sucks that we missed "The Catastrophe and the Cure", but MGMT was priority, so we weren't leaving early for anything. Oh well.

We grabbed some food (I got the infamous chicken on a stick and Lauren got some chinese...good eatin'), sat down and took a load off for a few before Broken Social Scene came on. We were missing Okkervil River to eat, but we were completely fine with it. We polished off as much of the grub as we could and headed back to the area we had just left. BSS took the stage at 6:30 with about 83 people on stage. They opened up with "Pacific Theme", one of my favorites in their catalog. They proceeded to play through some of their best tunes ("Cause = Time", "7/4 (Shoreline)", "Love Is New") which made for a great festival set. No "KC Accidental" or Feist though. Can't have everything my way I guess...

We knew when this show was over we'd make the most grueling decision of the entire weekend. This was the only time when we had no idea what we'd choose to see. Rage Against the Machine, one of my favorite bands from back in the day, or Wilco, one of the best touring bands on the planet? After some discussion, which had actually been going on for several months, we decided to see RATM. On our way back over to the AT&T Stage we ran across some old friends from Mississippi in the hammock area. We chit-chatted with them for a bit, snapped a photo or two, and made our way back to the same place we were in just a few hours earlier for what would easily be the most chaotic set of the festival.

[caption id="attachment_661" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Southern fried folks"][/caption]

We got to the stage right on time, and in our infinite wisdom, decided to stay out of the crowd where there would undoubtedly be a moshpit of epic proportions. They took the stage and instantly chaos ensued. It was a really good performance by the band. They opened with "Testify" which instantly threw the crowd into a frenzy. Next was "Bulls On Parade" and at this point the entire place was losing their minds. Only 2 songs into the set and they have to stop the show to settle the crowd down. This happened two other times, each time resulting in Zack de la Rocha pleading to the crowd to take care of each other and to "back up 10 steps". They ripped through tons of crowd favorites, but by 9:15 or so had played every song we were interested in hearing ("Bombtrack", "Know Your Enemy", "Bullet In the Head", "Calm Like a Bomb") so we decided to go ahead and cut out to catch the 10:40 train. On the way we caught Wilco playing "Jesus, Etc." and "I Can't Stand It". Hmm...there was no wrong choice there, only 2 right ones. I would have liked to have caught "Freedom" though, now that I think about it.

Great day spent listening to tons of great bands with some great people. Can't ask for much more than that. We did make our train by the way. Got back to the room and enjoyed the rest of the night resting before embarking on our Sunday adventures.

Part 3 coming up soon. To be continued...

Gents, saiu hoje a programação completa do TIM Festival 2008.

A dupla canadense Junior Boys, os ingleses do Neon Neon, o guitarrista norte-americano Bill Frisell, o trompetista polonês Tomasz Stanko, o italiano Enrico Pieranunzi, o DJ inglês Yoda, e os brasileiros Marcelo Camelo (em show solo acompanhado do grupo paulista do Hurtmold), Sany Pitbull, o grupo Cérebro Eletrônico, Sonny Rollins, Paul Weller, Carla Bley, Stacey Kent, Klaxons, The Gossip, Esperanza Spalding, Kanye West, Gogol Bordello, MGMT e The National.

I am well aware that Rhian Daly has already covered Reading Festival in her roundup, excellently so, i must add and if you haven't already, check it out! But i noticed that a lot of the bands that i went to see, she didn't, so unafraid of writing a far less impressive version of events than Rhian, I've done my own. Hope you enjoy it.

Ignoring the fact that you are stuck in a dirty, boggy field, surrounded by masses of beer and cider cans and various other rubbish, constantly smelling of your own filth and the fire from the blokes camping next to you, suffering from severe sleep deprivation, surrounded at best by complete idiots and at worst complete (enter expletive) there's not many places in the world where you can have a more fun weekend, than Reading festival if you ask me.

If you didn't go, you are probably quite sensible, but no doubt you'll want to know which bands were good, which were bad and which were Rage Against the Machine. That's where I come in. arriving on the Wednesday in order to allow my brother to get a weekend ticket, we are greeted by the sight of around 2000 people all queuing up, for access to one ticket booth. That's half the fun of reading though, queuing next to smelly obnoxious people, for reasons you aren't quite sure of. Nevertheless he's one of the lucky ones, and after about 3 hours queuing he is in, and the weekend can begin. I get my nose pierced in one of the tents on-site. Not the best idea when you are basically sleeping on farmland, but it's still in now, and my nose hasn't decayed, so it worked out ok, and I didn't cry. Anyway, to the bands.

FRIDAY

The clichéd major label punk stylings of Anti-Flag kick off the proceedings, and despite fairly tedious rants that manage to establish nothing that we don't already know- yes George Bush is a bit of an idiot, and yes peace is, generally, a good thing- they do manage to be quite good fun. Sure they're not covering any new ground, but they mean well, and they aren't a bad way to wake up in preparation for the rest of the day. Next up, over on the Lockup Stage is Blackhole. Having not heard a lot of them beyond the odd track from their EP before today, they come across as a promising prospect. Resembling, somewhat inevitably Gallows (the front man is Frank & Steph Carters brother) they put on a high octane show, that's pretty good to watch. By the time Frank joins his younger brother on stage, Blackhole have already won themselves a fair few new fans. They are certainly one to watch out for, unpretentious, loud and fast hardcore that's powerful live.

Time for a bit of unabashed nostalgia over on the mainstage, with Taking Back Sunday playing to a group of 18+ kids, acting as though they are 14 again. The sound for this is quite honestly atrocious, and it's hard to pick out much beyond the drums and bass, and this is within the inner circle, at the centre. Nevertheless its great to see and songs like ‘Cute Without the E' reduce the crowd into whiney idiots, screaming along. It's just a shame the sound was so bad. No such problems seem to exist for Dizzee Rascal who whips the crowd up into a cacophonous frenzy, with a 45 minute set full with hits and singles from each of his three efforts. ‘Sirens' causes many white kids more at home listening to the Fratellis to, in Dizzee's words ‘bounce'. However it's clear there remains a fair amount of confusion, as moshing takes place among those doing gun signs. This man knows how to work a crowd, and without doubt, yet again produces one of the best and most enjoyable sets of the weekend.

Back to the Lockup stage for NYHC legends H2O, who are back touring after almost a decade away. Lots of tracks off this years ‘Nothing to Prove' get an airing here, along with older classics such as ‘Thicker than water'. Highlight is ‘What Happened?' without doubt one of the best songs I've heard all year. It's good to have them back.

[caption id="attachment_2231" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="H20 GO!"][/caption]

Over on the mainstage Biffy Clyro continue their Reading festival trend of playing to bigger crowds each year. Whilst some (many) purists may claim they peaked several years before they released the stuff that makes up much of their set list today- set closer ‘57' is the only pre-‘Puzzle' song played- there aren't many bands writing radio friendly alternative tunes that can compete with Biffy right now. Following them, but over on the Lockup stage I go to investigate Tiger Army. Dubbed as pyschobilly, there's little here to interest me, they sound pretty generic, and do little to capture my attention or make any real impression.

At the NME/Radio 1 stage, MGMT pack the tent to the brim. Whilst it often may seem that there's two bands on evidence here, one capable of indie-pop gems such as ‘Kids', ‘Electric Feel' and ‘Time to Pretend' and the other, more self indulgent band immersed in psychedelia and LSD, this set has more than enough to keep most captivated. The album tracks aren't quite up to the standard of the aforementioned songs, but its an impressive performance nevertheless, capping off a great year for MGMT. Late of the Pier also pack out their tent, although it's the smaller Festival Republic stage (formerly the Carling Tent, and before that The New Bands tent). The crowd here also leave satisfied, with every song wonderfully catchy, in an unconventional way. Oh, and the bassist has a dressing gown on, the singer is wearing some pyjamas and the keyboard player some sort of wizard gown, and seems to have invented a new form of dance in between playing. I've forgotten what the drummer was wearing. This is a great performance regardless of stage attired, one that is high on energy and a lot of fun.

Back to the Lockup for some legendary skate(sk8) punk, in the form of Pennywise. Whilst it seems apparent that the bands heyday has been and gone, and despite the fact that the majority of the crowd probably should know better, it's still an enjoyable performance, not only for nostalgias sake.

All this leads up to Rage against the Machine. Such is the hype surrounding tonight's set; it was always going to be difficult to live up to it. For much of the crowd this is the first time seeing a band that they grew up with, and for such a formative band to be playing a massive festival like this, it's a big deal. Hence why it is important that they don't suck. And they don't, almost sounding as fresh as they did ‘back in the day' regardless of questionable motives, and the faint stench of hypocrisy. It's impossible not to get excited as the air raid sirens sound, and the band appear on stage dressed in Guantanamo bay outfits. Rage clearly have not mellowed with age, de la Rocha still sounds like he's really, really pissed off, even if it is in a champagne socialist way. Bursting into ‘Bombtrack' it's clear they are not going to disappoint. Questions about the sound level cannot spoil this performance, and hearing 100,000 people in a field chanting ‘Fuck you I won't do what you tell me' is something that cannot fail to have impact. They're tight as anything, and whilst not quite as edgy as they once were, given that any two bit ‘alternative rock' band around today seems to have an opinion on how things should be run, they give the fans exactly what they want. You can almost pretend Audioslave never happened. Almost. An amazing performance to bring the first day to a close.

Come back tomorrow for the next gripping installment!

I'm feelin rough I'm feelin raw I'm in the prime of my life.
Let's make some music make some money find some models for wives.
I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.

This is our decision to live fast and die young.
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.
Yeah it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Forget about our mothers and our friends.
We were fated to pretend.

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms.
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world.
I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home.
Yeah I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.

But there is really nothing, nothing we can do.
Love must be forgotten.
Life can always start up anew.

The models will have children, we'll get a divorce, we'll find some more models
Everything must run its course.
We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end.
We were fated to pretend.

Jams for September First through Seventh

The days following Labor Day festivies are always kind of a bummer. Back to school commercials are running ramped and everyone is dispersing to the lands of their studies. It's the return to the ol' grind again. Even those of us who don't go to school feel it. Fall will be upon us in no time. BUT ! Summer's not quite over yet- it's still in the nineties here in Los Angeles ! So, keep your chin up before you have to put your nose to the grindstone with this collection of jams for the last minute of summer. Keep on soaking up the sun and milking the nights for all they're worth !!! Enjoy.

Yeah so I went to the ocean with the youth and students from my church. The weather wasn't that great the first day but it got better. It was super fun. We played this game called mafia. In the game there are a few people who are "mafia" and you have to try to guess who its. But the only mafia members know the other mafia. Before that I didn't know how good my friends were at lying to my face. Another highlight was soccer on the beach. It was 20x better than all the times we played in LA. The sand here is all wet so its sorta hard but in Cali it's dry so your feet sink into it. Anyways my team won, after that we all ran into the water. It was fuckin freezing when we got out.

Here is a picture of one of Washington's terribly cold beaches:

MGMT

I like MGMT, don't you? They're super indie but indie is almost mainstream these days. If you've never heard of them then watch these videos and try not to get too distracted by the psychedelic scenes, listen too.

While every single blog in the blogosphere are playing the waiting game when it comes to the much talked about remix of MGMT's Kids, it's getting harder and harder to find ways to pass the time. So how should I spend my time, you might ask? Well, to build expectations a little more (it's hard, isn't it?) I decided to have a look at the massive back-catalogue of Soulwax's remixes to remind you of the best mixes from the Belgian duo. So until Kids blows your mind, enjoy a trip down memory lane.

7: The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy, Hey Girl (Soulwax Remix)

We start out with the most recent Soulwax remix; a 7 minute monstrous version of The Chemical Brothers' Hey Boy, Hey Girl. This track climbs and climbs till the point where you can’t really believe it anymore. The original track is close to being a classic, but Soulwax still manage to breathe new life into it.

6: Justice - Phantom Pt. II (Soulwax Remix)

I don't really know if this can be labelled as a proper remix, things are basically just taken from loud to even louder here. But Soulwax prove that they've been in the business for a while and they manage to put some structure into Justice's chaotic universe. Also, the silent-to-epic climax part halfway through the track is huuuuge!

5: Robbie Williams - Lovelight (Soulwax Ravelight Dub)

Robbie Williams has been associated with clichés and mediocrity for a long time, and it isn't the most obvious choice of a remix, but the result speaks for itself. Taking a rather blunt pop song and transforming it into nothing short of a rave monster is truly an achievement! Williams' role is relatively small in this, but who cares about that when Soulwax are determined to take your party beyond all limits. Huge is still the only word I can think of.

4: The Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want (2008 Soulwax Remix)

I find it hard to imagine exactly how you may feel if one of the biggest bands of the world asked you to remix them. Naturally The Rolling Stones are pretty serious about their music (they even had a representative present during the making of the remix), but I like to imagine that this remix represents everything the Stones would have liked to be today. Just terribly funky and groovy..

3: LCD Soundsystem - Get Innocuous! (Soulwax Remix)

The original version of Get Innocuous is pretty hard to beat. A track building through almost endless repetition taking listeners on a journey in space and time. That being said, Soulwax killed this remix beyond my wildest hopes and dreams. The build-up is still there, but when this track takes off things just go nuts.

2: Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor (Soulwax Dub)

I've been fond of tracks on the edge between the hardcore bangery stuff and the more melancholic stuff. On this track, Soulwax show exactly why they are regarded as top notch remixers. Created only with very few elements from the original track they add both nerve and intensity to this track and the climax just tears the place apart.

1: Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow (Soulwax Remix)

New rave is dead and has been for a long time. But does that mean that you can't have fun with sirens and insane tracks? Of course not, and Soulwax gives an outstanding lesson in how to party hard on this track. I don't really have much to say about this one, other than the fact that it always makes me dance in the most absurd ways. I hope you would like to dance with me on this one

SEXY HUH ? Moving on their album oral oracular spectacular is awesome i usually never like ALL the album of an artist but this was one was amazing my favorites had to be 'kids' 'time to pretend' , 'electric feel' and 'weekend wars ' .

MGMT - Time to Pretend - Oracular Spectacular

The models will have children, we'll get a divorce,
we'll find some more models, Everything must run its course.

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end.
We were fated to pretend.

yeah yeah yeah

DEEP HUH ?
