The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Links neuestes Abenteuer in Cell Shading.

Zurecht!

I really need to finish Metal Gear Solid 4. Unfortunately, I can’t just barge in to my brother

I really need to finish Metal Gear Solid 4. Unfortunately, I can't just barge in to my brother's house and commandeer his PS3. I can, however, borrow his copies of the other MGS games. I spent the last 48 hours playing through Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (first time through) and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, in that order.

You may remember that I gave MGS3 a try a few weeks back and hated it for its less than stellar control scheme. Well, I was watching GameTrailers' MGS Retrospective and got that guilty feeling you get when you give up on a game that has been given so much praise.

This time around, I browsed through some of the game's options and found a briefing on some of the game's more complex maneuvers. I decided I would start a new file and give these techniques a try. Turns out, a simple control such as holding circle is incredibly superior to the awkward square shooting controls.

Now, I could actually sneak up on enemies and cut their throats. Going backwards to MGS2 and the original, weird neck break move was hard after slaughtering exactlty 200 guards with quick knife slashes in MGS3. The move was so effective that I would actually run up to groups of up to three guards without fear, knowing that I could knock out the first two by ramming them into the ground and slitting the last one's throat right away. I course, I would stab the unconcious guards in the face and drag the trio into the brush afterwards.

The point in all this is that I was finally able to enjoy the majority of Snake Eater's gameplay through bypassing the guns as much as possible. I actually beat the entire Snake Eater mission without turning the PS2 off. It was one of those strange video game moments where I was just so sucked in that I couldn't quit. That's not to say I have no new complaints. Quite the contrary.

It's now dawn outside and the credits to Sons of Liberty finished a few minutes after I began typing this post. I really want to finish MGS4 now because, having experienced half the series' plot within two days has made me realize how inconsistent the Solid series is.

People rave about the series claiming its art and that the plot is so well-thought out and thought-provoking, but I doubt most have stopped to see it the way I just have.

I went see The Dark Knight before coming home to finish Sons of Liberty. On the way back, I told my friend how ridiculous the first movie, Batman Begins, would seem if you watched the two one after the other. While Batman Begins introduces us to a new, more realistic take on the Batman universe, The Dark Knight is something special.

You see, The Dark Knight would have been incredible even if it weren't a Batman movie. In fact, I personally think it would have been even more incredible if it weren't a Batman movie. Despite Batman Begins starting the new series of movies with a more realistic tone, The Dark Knight was leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor in terms of this presentation. In effect, The Dark Knight is to Batman Begins as Guns of the Patriots is to Sons of Liberty (the game that preceeds it chronologically.)

The games are very inconsistent both within themselves and in how they connect. I plan on typing up a full fledged article on these specific elements once I complete MGS4, but basically, my main point is that MGS4 cannot be considered this incredible work of literary art when it is so inconsistent with its connection to previous games and its own gameplay in its equally inconsistent attempt to inject realism in random moments and gameplay mechanics.

The series just reeks of the odor that comes with an overall story arch that wasn't planned out in its entirety ahead of time. Guns of the Patriots compromises Sons of Liberty's incredibly optomistic ending for the sake of beginning itself with a very depressing cast of characters ripe with conflict. Snake Eater craps upon the entire franchise by injecting characters that can't die if the future were to remain unchanged in situations where not being killed conflicts with the realism that Kojima injected into both the gameplay and plot of the games set in a later time.

Metal Gear Solid 4 spits in the face of all the games in the series that came before it in order to immerse the player in what is probaby the best presentation of any game in any franchise so far in history. It's in this regard that Metal Gear Solid 4 itself is inconsistent and unworthy of the specific praise it receives. I can only agree with someone who has played 4 and no other entry in the series as they couldn't possibly know the compromises the game makes with the plot presented so far.

It's almost as if there is some void where chronology and continuity could be suspended in order to include a fifth Metal Gear Solid game that makes up for the compromises and fills in the odd gap that makes Old Snake more like Naked Snake/Big Boss from the end of Snake Eater.

*Sigh* I need to finish MGS4.

And so it ends. Exactly 10 years after "Metal Gear Solid" debuted on the Playstation, Kojima puts an end to his most beloved saga with "MGS4: Guns of The Patriots". What to expect from the final chapter on such a riveting saga: a glorious goodbye or a cynic "see you soon"?

The game splits in 5 acts (plus prologue and epilogue); 5 acts, as defined in classical drama: each posing as a logical narrative unit, with beginning and end, occurring in different places in time and space, and in this case, with a different art and gameplay style. Each act tends to echo a different MGS, which adds a sense of closure and nostalgia to the saga, placing the player in different emotional states that connect with past experiences. Overall, the game plays like an evolved MGS3, with smoother controls, a decent camera angle that facilitates both combat and stealth, and with a lot more action sequences. Stealth is still key, and the game entices you to use it, while at the same time, refrains from penalizing you when you don't. The first 2 acts are the most interesting gameplay-wise, as they put the player in the midst of a war, allowing you to either take advantage of it, sneaking by unseen and unheard while the 2 sides fight each other, or to simply join a side and start waging combat with your newly found war buddies. Everything works well, adding to the sense of a real war, and the levels are designed in a more streamlined way, that favors of a more slick and linear experience, thus simplifying the somewhat cumbersome nature of MGS3's mechanics. The only letdown lies in the game's bosses, that mirror almost precisely those of the first MGS. They're uninteresting, shallow replicas that are never embodied as fully developed characters and their battles rely too much on straight forward shooting, lacking the brilliant, twisted mechanics of MGS1and 3's bosses (Psycho Mantis, The End, etc...).

But let's face it, the only reason for playing "MGS" is the story, all else falls secondary. It's what has guaranteed the saga's place in the hall of greatest videogames in history. This is thanks to its unique blend of traditional Hollywood action blockbusters' spirit, ripe with plot twists and over the top cinematics, with its anime-like aesthethic (courtesy of Yoji Shinkawa), and a lot of philosophical/socio-political ramblings to please the more intellectual players. Still, the premise in MGS4, to wrap things up once and for all, ending the gigantic plot conundrum of "Sons of Liberty", always sounded overly ambitious and very hard to achieve. There was just so much left to unveil: the true identity of the patriots, their relationship with Liquid, Solidus and Ocelot, the meaning behind the whole back story of MGS3, and even the ultimate purpose of the actions of the player throughout the series - what was Solid Snake really fighting for? Let me reassure you that Hideo Kojima answers this questions with the style and grace we've come to know him for. Yet, he does this in subservient fashion, as a slave to a greedy mob, trying at all costs to wrap things up in a tidy, simple, pleasant way that won't upset any fans. Every character, regardless of its importance (or lack thereof), makes a comeback, all with their complete storyarchs, but zero risks are taken, and every petty, insignificant detail is fleshed out explicitly; a remembrance of what George Lucas tried to accomplish in the second "Star Wars" trilogy. It's a shame, because players have imagination and intellect to fill in gaps, and should be more often greeted to do so, specially when it's obvious that Kojima has the ability to make you think about important matters in subtler, nuanced ways. In the end, the pleasing fan-game ends up shattering most of the mystery in Kojima's insanely mad world, in similar fashion to a magician who reveals his tricks in the end of his act, transforming wondrous, mystical magic into a form of elegant trickery. Because that's what remains in the end, a sense of deceit, as you learn that Kojima, as a lying Hitchcock, has tricked you once again into believing a strain of lies which he now unveils. But if some are riveting and change the way you view certain characters and even past events (begging you to play previous entries one last time), some just feel cheap and idiotic, showing lack of premeditated thought. Of course, all these twists result in a series of plot holes, that range from the insignificant to the blatantly obvious, adding to the unwelcome sense of malicious deceit that settles in. In "Guns of the Patriots", even dead characters make a comeback from the dead to please the fans... Sure, if you're a big fan of "Metal Gear", you'll probably dismiss this, as you'll be engrossed in the narrative weaving, adoring every fan tailored reference, but if you're really interested in narrative depth, you'll be left somewhat disappointed that the series ends (?) in such a hasty, incongruous way.

Continuing with the pretentious nature of the overarching plot of the series, there are a lot of interesting themes underlying MGS4's depiction of the future, and most of them with a controversial nature: capitalism and its impact on state's sovereignty and global power structures, war and its shadowy motivations, genetics and the ethics of science, cultural and family legacy and its impact in the world, just to name a few. As always, expect long dialogs, though fortunately, unlike previous works, the Codec medium is almost completely absent, relinquishing its seat to fully acted, technically stunning animation sequences. Yet, like in every magic act, substance can be of little importance, as style and form can often determine the impact a work has on its audience, and thus, its perception and efficacy. And this is where Kojima's act vanishes in smoke: MGS4's cinematic tone, instead of going back to the subtlety and seriousness of the first MGS, opts for the grand, operatic, flamboyant style of MGS2 and 3, completely in tune with modern wacky japanimations. Well, in reality, it surpasses his predecessors, as "Guns of the Patriots" tries to encompass even more styles, genres and tones than any other game/movie/book known to Man. You'll get sad, dramatic scenes followed by cute monkeys burping from drinking coke and coughing from smoking tobacco; bittersweet, nurturing moments of bonding followed by the most outrageous action sequences with coreographies that make "Advent Children" and "Devil May Cry" look like slow ballets; you'll get fart jokes in between "Private Ryan" war sets - if you can name a style, then most likely, "Guns of the Patriots" has it: from comedy to tragedy, drama to action; sci-fi to noir. The problem with this virtuoso fruit salad is that all of its elements lose their ability to attain their objectives, as the players' mindset becomes too fragmented to sink in such a wide array of emotions. Eventually, this murders characters in the eye of the spectator, as you'll never know if you're supposed to take things seriously or not. It' becomes hard to watch such multifaceted characters treated in such a dictatorial way, destroying their credibility and connection with the audience just for the sake of a few laughs or sentimental sighs.

Above all, the game fails when compared to its long legacy. Looking back at the first "Metal Gear Solid", with its consistently dark aesthetic, and its wonderful cast of morally torn characters, it's hard not to wish MGS4 would be different. Remember the sobriety of MGS's tragic tale - a group of people forced to wage war with one another, played like human puppets, suffering at the hands of fate and powers they could never understand. The depth of its storytelling, the great use of sound and cutscenes, the revolutionary gameplay and AI.. Sure, there were some crazy anime elements (Mantis' flying around comes to mind), but they were toned down, and usually served as ways of rendering character's inner struggles and beliefs, a meaningful hyperbole of what passed inside them, if you will. In 4, every eccentricity is hollow and out of context. Balance and focus are what MGS4 lacks the most: its outrageous tone and fan pleasing desire just ruin the delicate narrative structure other Metal Gears' possessed. It's still a brilliant game, and certainly one of the best to have been released since "Bioshock", but it poses as a mere shadow of its ancestors. In a way, it's a good thing MGS4 ends the saga, for it was becoming a titan larger than its own author; but on the other hand, it is a bittersweet farewell, as you look back and acknowledge the differences between this iteration and what MGS once meant for a small, artistically poor medium. Let's just hope that Kojima can impress us with his magic in the future, as he breaks free from the shackles of Big Boss' legacy.

Little needs to be said about the Gameboy. It is the Godfather of handheld systems. Video Games would not be where they are today without the Gameboy. Whether your first Gameboy was the good ol' grey fatty, the slim and stylish Pocket, or the Color, you knew that you were in for a treat. Without further adieu, here are the Top 9 Gameboy/Pocket/Color games as selected by the Mediarahan staff.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="#9 Kirby's Dreamland"][/caption]

In the pantheon of great Nintendo heroes Kirby is often overlooked. This is a shame because Kirby’s dreamland is one of the most fun and charming platformers ever created. There’s just something appealing about guiding a gluttonous cute pink puffball through hordes enemies, yum.

P.S. I've always wondered why he's white on the box art.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="#8 Metal Gear Solid"][/caption]

This alternate universe Metal Gear aimed to get its sneak in while you’re on the move. The Gameboy Color’s Metal Gear Solid blended the revolutionary game play of the original Metal Gear games, with the over the top story telling of the Solid games. It also used a mission based system which was perfect for the pick up and play needs of the Gameboy. Sadly, David Hayter’s voice could not be used but we’ll forgive that for a great MGS experience.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="#7 Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land"][/caption]

The first time I heard about this game I was in total shock. The main enemy from Super Mario Land 2 is now the protagonist!? Not just that but he wasn't after Mario, he was after all the treasure in the land. Wario is truely one greedy fuck, it's no wonder those pirate ducks on the cover are pissed. Wario Land, much like Super Mario Land 2, brought many different powerups for Wario to use, my personal favorite was the Dragon hat which shot fire somehow. On top of the enjoyable level design, there were a shit-load of secrets to find in this game, which would require a few playthroughs to find them all without a copy of Nintendo Power. Put all of that together and you can actually have a really fun road trip.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="252" caption="#6 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX"][/caption]

Link’s first outing on the Gameboy was also my (TripV's) first experience with Nintendo’s grey fatty. The game was simply flawless. Every dungeon was expertly crafted with unique items like Roc’s Feather, which allowed Link to jump. Zelda DX took all the greatness of Link’s Awakening and colorized it making it the definitive version of a beloved classic. It also added a special color dungeon to give veterans of the original a little more.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="#5 Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins"][/caption]

When I think of the Gameboy, this, along with its predecessor, are some of the first games I think about. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is without a doubt the best original Mario game on the Gameboy system. Following in Super Mario World's footsteps, Super Mario Land 2 presented Mario with some new power-ups (bunny ears and bubble), as well as different takes on old ones (fire flower). The biggest downside of this game is that it is short, but that is easily forgotten because the fifth playthrough is just as fun as the first. This game is the first Mario game that doesn't involve resucing a princess and due to that introduces Wario who is one of my favorite Nintendo characters. All of above reasons places this classic at #5.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="462" caption="#4 Pokémon Blue/Red "][/caption]

TripV might not have jumped on the Pokémon bandwagon back in 1998, but I sure did. Starting with the anime and trading cards, then moving on to the game, I was in a Pokémon craze for two whole years of my life so It should come as no surprise that I can still name the first 151 Pokémon. A game like this brought a whole new style of RPGs to America that had been around in Japan since the original Megami Tensei games. The "Gotta Catch 'Em All" formula is very addictive and successful, not to mention fun. I probably don't need to say anything more about this game, because everyone has played this game in one way or another.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="250" caption="#3 Super Mario Bros. Deluxe"][/caption]

I remember getting this game on my 12th birthday as I requested, and it did not let down. In fact it exceeded in everyway possible. The last time I played the original Super Mario Bros. prior to receiving this game was probably 8 years earlier, back in 1991 before my dad decided to send our NES away. Aside from the original Super Mario Bros., this game threw in the Lost Levels, as well as a few bonus modes, such as challenge mode(added a hidden yoshi egg and 5 red coins), a vs. race mode, you vs. boo (race against boo), and the toy box which kept all the mini games and non playable extras where you could really waste a lot of time. I remember you could edit the opening sound in the Toy Box when the game first loads, and my brother spent a lot of time putting in different riffs from jazz songs, a pretty cool extra if you ask me. If this was still in stores today, I would have no problem dropping $30 on it.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="463" caption="#2 The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages"][/caption]

When deciding the order of the Top 9 Gameboy games, TripV was trying to put Zelda DX above the Oracle games. Now I understand where he is coming from and I know that Link's Awakening is a true handheld classic, but these games took everything that made Link's Awakening as well as the N64 iterations great and improved upon them. It also must be noted that he did not play these games and that will be a perminant stain on his gamer record. He decided I was right when I told him that after beating both games and linking them together you get to fight Ganon, the pig version. I asked him what other games you fight the Pig version of Ganon and without much hesitation decided to heed my judgement. Most people will rank these games seperately, but it just wouldn't be right to play one and not the other, heck I remember having a hard time deciding which game to start on. In the end I started on Seasons because the Nintendo Power guidebook started there also. Both games were classic Zelda titles from the beginning and had every bit of charm that prior games had. Back in April of 2001 the Gameboy Advance was on the horizon, and with these two games coming out literally a month before the Advance, I would say this is a great way to close out 12 years of handheld gaming while leading into the future. If you picked both of these up back in 2001, you'll agree that instead of putting down $30 each for two new Zelda titles, you really paid $60 for a great Zelda experience ($75 if you're like me and got the guide). The Oracle games delivered two of the best weeks of my adolescent gaming career.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="244" caption="#1 Tetris DX"][/caption]

Well, we're finally at #1. Over 12 years of portable games and only 1 can be the best, that is why we have chosen Tetris DX. This is exactly what the gameboy was made for, an endless puzzle game that is filled with nothing but endless fun. Heck the original Gameboy launched with Tetris, and the Gameboy Color launched with Tetris DX. The reason we chose Tetris DX is because it added marathon mode and was in color. This is the game all my friends would play when I lent them my Gameboy on school trips. I would play this at home or in the car, and in some cases whenever I went to someplace boring that my parents forced me to go. It was only last week that I pulled out my Gameboy Advance to play some more of this game. The day my cartridge dies might as well be the day I die, or at least purchase another copy.

Now that we've listed our top 9, if anyone else is reading this, feel free to leave any comments or post your personal top 9.

It's been a busy week so far. From a weekend filled with shopping, a picnic, and an awesome church service to a week starting off with sickness and much housework, it hasn't been a very gamer-friendly time for me.

I guess that's one reason the blogging has dropped off. It's a great past time, and I rather enjoy writing, but when life just keeps giving you cards that you just want to get through, blogging takes the back seat (at least on a gaming blog, anyways).

My niece and nephews are going to be around until the 31st, and then I'll be able to get into the games that I've had to hold off on. MGS3 and MGS4 still need to be played, and I'm really thinking about playing through MGS2 again. I'd like to play the first one, but unfortunately, cash is tight right now, and I don't want to drop too much money on it. I figure just getting re-acquainted with the series will take long enough.

Then there are the other games that I still need to get complete, like Battlefield: Bad Company, although I'll probably just be playing multi-player for some time. I want to start in on Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, as I've not played much of it, but I know it takes dedication. Then there's Final Fantasy X, which truthfully, I've nearly forgotten about. Oh, and also Katamari Damacy.

There are a few games that I have been able to play recently, games like Guitar Hero 3, Bad Company multi-player, Burnout: Paradise (not my copy, unfortunately) and Heavenly Sword.

These are the games, time-permitting, that will be holding me over until August.I guess you could say that next month is looking pretty promising.

Tomb Raider UnderWorld
I actually never played Tomb Raider but I'm really interested in the way this series has changed after it was taken over by Crystal Dynamics.

Metal Gear Solid 4
I also never played a Metal Gear Solid game. The hype on the game got me. One thing I was worried about was the stealth action would be tough and boring... reviews have made me think otherwise. When I do get my PS3, this will be the first game I try out.

Heavenly Sword
Looks great, got decent reviews, has lots of action... I'm sold. I'll get this at a discounted price and hopefully will be one of the first games I play on PS3.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm
Wow. I don't even watch Naruto. The cell shading on this game is amazing. Animations look better than the cartoon. Moreover, the ninja action looks pretty sweet.

Street Fighter IV
I loved the old days of Street Fighter II. It was one of the first games I got really hooked on. I haven't played much of the Alpha nor SF III series. I was also not much of a fan of the VS. games, except for X-Men VS. Street Fighter. I'm glad Capcom returned to SF's roots. I can't wait for this one.

The Force Unleashed
I am big on Star Wars (just like ever other dork). I've played a few other games and they were either too repetitive (Episode III) or too hard and time consuming for me (KOTR, Jedi Knight). I'm looking for a good balance. This game strikes me more of an action/adventure and that should be perfect for the gaming experience I'm looking for.

Killzone 2
I played the original Killzone and it was fun. When the PS3 was announced there was one awesome Killzone trailer. I'd play it just for the visuals!

Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 1 was a puzzle game. It was tough to control, took loads of time, and scared the living crap out of me. I would never play this alone. RE5 looks more like an shoot-em-up action game. Lots of the screens are set in daylight... You also lose the claustrophobia of being stuck in a mansion. So while RE2-4 didn't get my attention, this one did. And I'm looking forward to it! Plus I'm a lot older and scare less easily. No wusses here.

Prince of Persia
I can't remember if I just played just Sands of Time or if I played another one of the PoPs but I remember it was fun. I like the new art direction and I hope that Ubisoft uses some stuff from Assassin's Creed.

Right now, I am honestly not sure what to write about. Things have kind of been in limbo as of lat

Right now, I am honestly not sure what to write about. Things have kind of been in limbo as of late. E3 left me kind of empty inside. There have been no interesting games released as of late (although I do need to find a way to pick up Final Fantasy IV for DS). And I am still trying to finish up GTAIV. I really should have finished that game before I headed into MGS4. (There are way too many games I play this year ending in the number four.) At this point, I am fairly certain that I am near the end of the story for GTA, but needs about 25% more to get 100% completion. There have been over 50 hours of my life poured into Liberty City at this point and I really don’t want to stop anytime soon. Really, this is because the last 10 hours I have put into this game have been my best so far.

These 10 hours aren’t the best because of the story or the missions, but because I took a step away from the game. Seriously, I was playing GTAIV non-stop from release day until about the day before MGS4 came out. And by non-stop I mean whenever I had a free moment and the TV wasn’t already being used by my wife. The problem with this is I wasn’t able to fully appreciate the game. My tasks usually focused on completing the missions at hand and attempting to keep all of my relationships at their optimum reward levels (except for Dwayne…I’m not sure why I chose to let him live sometimes.) However, when I returned to GTA IV I focused less on relationships, even more on the missions, and a lot more on the side missions. For some strange reason, this allowed me to see some things I had not seen before.

My eyes were opened to bums with real, polygonal cardboard signs that bugged me for change. While I got nothing worthwhile in return for said change giving, it still was something I had yet to experience. Another great pastime I have also focused on is ramming motorcycles with the largest SUVs I can find. Of course, these motorcycles were occupied and it was fairly enjoyable to see how far I could fling a body (yes…I am a sadist in Liberty City). Honestly, I try to find as many ways as I can to send the most bodies into the air. Filling up gas stations with cars and somehow trapping citizens in a ring of fire would be a great accomplishment…I just don’t know to do it yet. It would be helpful if I could pick up citizens and throw them around. Oh well.

Back to my point, I think overall it helps to step away from a game for a while and then return to it after a short break. When focusing on a game too much, a routine is developed on how you play it, what you see, and what you do. Moving away to a completely different experience and then coming back to it allows you to re-approach your gameplay. For example, when playing MGS4 I focused on the simply stunning look of the game and a lot of sneaky-like gameplay (I say sneaky-like since I like to run n’ gun). When I came back to Liberty City, this routine was still ingrained in me. Missions were played with a bit more use of the cover system and I started to notice a lot more about the world around me. It really was an eye-opening experience.

Should everyone take this approach to gaming? I am not sure. But I think it would greatly help. I do know it doesn’t help to take a long break from a game and then come back though. Every summer I used to play Final Fantasy VII. People like Ian McKellen read the Lord of the Rings once a year…I played the same video game once a year. Great tradition. Anyway, I would gear up for this and use the same playthrough techniques time and time again. If I were to use the prior technique of playing it for about a month or a few weeks followed by a short break and then jumping back into it again, I may have completely changed my approach to the game. Although I am not sure sure what else I could have brought to the FFVII table since I pretty much accomplished everything in that game (and broke the memory card...but that is another story).

While I have no scientific proof to prove my point, I have my beliefs in this. Perhaps for the next few months I will use this approach to gaming. This should start with Soul Calibur IV. I could probably play that for a good solid 2 weeks and then switch to Lego Indiana Jones. Once this is completed, I can go back to SCIV for a few more days until Mercenaries 2: World in Flames comes out. Then I am in the thick of the holiday season with such jewels as The Force Unleashed to look forward to (that will make a great bday present!).

So, I guess what I have determined through all of this is a new scientific test. Play games, switch it up, and see what happens. I will report my findings as soon as I have any. Trust me.

As always, thanks for reading and I appreciate your time.

So richtig in Fahrt kommt Super Smash Bros.

A system seller. That’s what many are calling, and have called, Metal Gear Solid 4. And well,

A system seller. That's what many are calling, and have called, Metal Gear Solid 4. And well, it seems that it is. As we are all now well aware, Sony bundled in MGS4 with PS3 systems this summer and it has payed off. According to NPD data the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in the month of June... no... it demolished it.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is the fourth game in Konami's Metal Gear Solid franchise and is considered to be director Hideo Kojima's game magnum opus, but does the game deliver on all the hype that has followed it? Yes, yes it does.

This review is a long time coming and is now out of date in the ever moving games industry, but it must be done. MGS4 has received a lot of perfect scores, and sure it's a great game, but it is not perfect. Please do not interpret those scores as perfect, cause they don't reflect that. What they reflect is the overlooking of issues in the grand scheme of things.

First, the cut scenes in MGS4 take a looong time to wade through. This is not a game you pop in to quickly play a level or finish a boss. It's literally impossible. You're going to need at least 30 minutes, maybe longer, to set aside to play this game. As most have said, it's like playing a movie. In fact, the final cutscene may qualify as a short film... running at around 30 - 40 minutes long.

Second, there's quite a length install time before you play it. There are also small install times in between each act. Though I feel that this is a small issue. Sure, it was annoying as hell waiting to get to the next part in this grand tale of Solid Snake's final mission... but it was forgotten soon after I got to playing again.

And oh boy, it is good when you get to playing again. The controls are smooth, the graphics are amazing, and everything just feels so right. If there was a game that simulated real life well, it could be this. Interacting with objects and the AI of the guards all earn high marks and are great fun to play with. The cut scenes thrown in between gameplay bits... or maybe gameplay thrown in between cut scenes... just add to the bad assery, especially since they're all done with the in game engine.

There is one major new addition to the series though, and that comes in the form of Drebin. He's an arms dealer that allows you to basically buy ammunition and guns for all your weapons at any point in time. Though some may feel that this is cheap, it allows you to attack any scenario in the game any way you wish. It opens up choice to each and every player so that they are not forced to beat the game or go through levels in one particular way.

That's the major addition, but the major evolution is presentation. This game truly does lift the bar for presentation in a video game. The musical score, the direction, and the cinematics are all of Hollywood quality. It truly is amazing to see how far this medium has grown in the past 10 years. It's just mind blowing.

The story may be a bit mind blowing as well, sure it's a bit convoluted but it ties up most, if not all, of the loose ends in the first three of the series. Oh, and don't worry, for those that are new to the series it does a good job of summarizing past events, though you won't get all the nitty gritty details that many fans of MGS love. If you are a fan of MGS though, you will love this game. There are so many hidden easter eggs and and moments that are referenced from past games it'll make you giggle with glee. And there's one moment in particular that bring nostalgia right to your front door.

There's only one way to summarize this game, for both fans of the series and people who haven't yet checked out the series, for both PS3 owners and non-PS3 owners, and that summarization is simple: system seller.

Rating: 5 out of 5

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

A missão extrema de Snake

Sistema: PlayStation 3
Produção: Konami
Desenvolvimento: Kojima Productions

É a retomada do tema favorito, a manipulação.

O Show Particular

Simples e eficiente.

A Tesoura Necessária

Raiden

As the protagonist for the Plant section in MSG 2, Raiden MSG2 proves not to be very popular. His features include a tight full-body suit, hair to his shoulders, and a handsome face. However, characters like President Johnson seem to have trouble identifying his gender. I am actually fond of the guy but that doesn' seem to be the case to other players. In fact, he even gets his own parody in MSG3.

Leon S. Kennedy

Leon from Resident Evil (2&4), on the other hand, is also a rookie like Raiden, but has received much more popularity. He is first seen with a blue R.P.D. uniform and comes back with a stunning look in 4.

Raiden vs Leon

They are both newly-introduced rookies in the second installment of popular video game series, but why is Leon welcomed with so much love but not Raiden? Here are some conjectures:

Raiden has been described as "whiny" and "feminine"

Raiden has hair above his shoulders while Leon, above his ears

Raiden takes over Snake in the latter half of the game while you start out as Leon in RE2

Anyone think of more reasons?

Solid Snake mata a Big Boss.

---
---

The Philosophers

-(Observación)En 1924 nace "The Joy" (mas conocida como "The Boss").

"The philosophers" prácticamente gobernaban el mundo.

----

1era Actualización - Historia Filosófica de THE BOSS

The Boss

Y bueno... quién es The Boss??...

"LOYAL TO THE END"...

---
---

Y terminamos matando a The Boss porqué???

Cependant, "Solid Snake" dit maintenant "Old(-is) Snake" nous ramènera à sa dure réalité.

"I'm not a hero"
