Rating: 9.5 Out of 10

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence was the greatest expansion pack to a game in a long time. This game had everything in Snake Eater plus more. For starters this game has great graphics and audio. Now, there is a full 360 degree camera angle that changes the game so drastically that it's is awesome. There are a ton of small addons as well to the game, but the biggest one right now would be the online mode. The only thing minor with this game is that there are still some minor bugs, but nothing that can't be overlooked. If you are a Metal Gear Solid fan, get this game, you won't be disappointed.

Pros:

+ Adds a great, new online play mode

+ New Camera Angle!

+ Lots of Added Extras

- Some Smaller Gameplay Issues

Rating: 9.5 Out of 10

All I can say is that Hideo Kojima has done it again! Metal Gear Solid 3 takes the whole outside environment to a whole new level. This game has a beautiful environment, good graphics and audio, an excellent storyline, and the cut scenes are perfect. The camo, backpack, curing, and eating aspects are also very well done. The only problem I had with this game is that it was too short. Overall though this game is a very good game and I will play it for a long time.

Welcome to the next installment of your second favorite Team Wi-Fi Galaxy feature, TWGNews Top 10! On this occasion we'd like to present our Top 10 Leading Ladies, the women who stole the spotlight in games spanning every genre, system and generation.

#10:

Raccoon City Murders - S.T.A.R.S Alpha Team Member

One of the two main protagonists of the original Resident Evil, Jill Valentine has featured prominently in the series ever since. She would take the lead in Resident Evil 3, fight alongside the series cast in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and become the focal character of the second Resident Evil feature film (though a context many fans would like to forget).

Jill Valentine has contributed to the visibility of female heroines by headlining one of the most popular video game franchises. She has shown up on nearly ever major platform since her Playstation debut and her character has evolved at a rapid pace thanks to remake-happy creator Shinji Mikami.

#9:

Confirmed - The Perfect Agent

In their spiritual successor to the legendary Goldeneye, Rare proved that being a secret agent requires a set of skills equally uncommon among both sexes. Joanna Dark was perfectly crafted for bringing the company's award winning gameplay to an original concept. Designing Perfect Dark with a woman protagonist was a very concious effort on Rare's part, drawing inspiration from other femme fatales in the media and even naming the character for Joan of Arc (Jeanne D'Arc).

Unlike similar depictions of the straight-out-of-high-school covert operative, the characters in the game make frequent reference to Joanna Dark's youth. Her modest looks and bust (prior to the Zero reimagining) also helped direct attention to the endearing personality that got Joanna our ninth spot.

#8:

Triforce Of Wisdom - The Hyrule Princess

The namesake of one of the most popular franchises ever, Princess Zelda's role has expanded considerably beyond the damsel-in-distress archetype that she embodied in her earliest games. She has since been a prophet, a sorceress, a Shiekah, a pirate, and is even known to take up the bow and arrow in her ongoing efforts to rid the world of evil with series protagonist Link.

Her frequent victimization aside, Zelda has been one of gaming's most important females from her 1986 debut to the present day.

#7:

Loyal To The End - A Legendary Soldier

The only non-playable character on this list, The Boss represents a groundbreaking portrayal of a video game female in several ways. During the events of Metal Gear Solid 3 any sight or mention of her brought about your utmost respect for her personal strength. No matter what point in her story arc, respect was always integral to The Boss' persona, and once you've witnessed the full extent of it you'll feel much more than that. Anyone who could think the things she did, do the things she did and fight the battles she fought deserves veneration.

On top of that The Boss was a mother, meaning not only had she experienced the zenith of womanhood but she was also considerably aged for a field dominated by well-endowed twenty somethings. Her status as 'leading' relative to our other entries could be argued, but the role she plays and her influence that echoes throughout the Metal Gear Solid series earns The Boss a place on this list.

#6:

Infused With Chozo Blood - The Accursed Hunter

Bioform Samus Aran is one of the earliest and still one of the most prominent female leads in the industry. The revelation of her gender at the end of the first Metroid was among the game's most memorable aspects, the others being its inventive plot, gameplay and style. She helped to diversify the field of 8-bit protagonists, but her appearances would become far and few between until the reinvention of the series into Metroid Prime, Samus' most critically and commercially successful starring role to date.

Even after wrapping up the Prime trilogy Samus is still highly visible in her veteran role as a Super Smash Brothers fighter. Samus has outlasted most of the ladies that followed in her footsteps, and we can say with no hint of insincerity that she's only gotten more beautiful with age.

#5:

Arise, My Daughter - The Queen Bitch Of The Universe

Sarah Kerrigan's life story is a tragic, if not formulaic one (name a pyschic kid who wasn't denied a normal childhood by their government's interest in their powers), with the majority of her time spent in service to one warring faction or another. She found herself exploited and betrayed in every circumstance until she lost her humanity, but even that was only half the story (slated for resolution in Starcraft 2).

Being female was a secondary aspect of Kerrigan's already intriguing character, and in most cases that's the way it should be. Not because of, not in spite of, but in indifference to her femininity Sarah Kerrigan remains one of the most compelling protagonists and antagonists in video gaming canon.

#4:

Raised An Aristocrat - The Tomb Raider

Though predated some months by Jill Valentine, Lara Croft is still the most widely recognizable of the heroines that emerged with the turn of 3D graphics. The antagonist of Tomb Raider was also a female, marking one of the industry's first major catfights. Lara is remembered primarily for her sex appeal, but her intriguing rise from British nobility to the female Indiana Jones is what truly substantiates her upper five ranking.

Despite her series' fall from prominence Lara Croft remains one of gaming's biggest icons, appearing in the Guinness Book of World Records, the Walk of Game and on the big screen as portrayed by Angelina Jolie in the most successful video game movie of all time, Tomb Raider.

#3:

Used To Danger - The Flower Girl

When years of superb Final Fantasy character portrayals met believable 3D appearances, Aeris was born. Though FF7's more compelling antagonist stole the spotlight (among other valued things), we remember Aeris both in relation to Sephiroth and in her own rite. What Square was able to do with the new technology in their depiction of her was groundbreaking, and Aeris remains one of the most beautiful and fully realized characters ever to grace the franchise.

Aeris has since been reincarnated in entries of the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7, but her first role was easily enough to justify a place among the top female characters of video gaming. Virtually all those who played the title were moved in some way by her story and Aeris lends significant credence to Final Fantasy 7's monumental status.

#2:

A Pinker Shade Of Maze - The Original Miss

Back in the early 1980's only the man of the household went out to eat dots, while the women stayed home and (presumably) picked fruit to throw at their husbands' workplace. The entrance of the lovely Ms Pac Man would forever change this dynamic, a pioneering female star who managed to eat her way through the industry's glass ceiling.

Sporting her characteristic pink bow and lipstick Ms Pac Man clearly belonged to the fairer sex even during the most graphically primitive era. She has come close to eclipsing the iconic status of her husband and her simple arcade style games remain widely enjoyed by gamers of every age and gender.

#1:

Oh, Did I Win? - Princess Of The Mushroom Kingdom

Most of the entries on this list have been females who broke convention and flouted traditional roles, so why pick a dress-wearing, parasol-swinging girl like Peach for the coveted number one? The answer is simple: Peach defies the stereotype of stereotype-defying females. Where others before and after took on masculine disguises or used the all equalizing firearm to get the job done, Peach has been kicking ass since SMB2 in the girliest way possible.

With the immense proliferation of her native franchise, Peach has fought, raced, played nearly every sport and even saved a few kingdoms. In all of these capacities she takes advantage of her small build, fine motor skills and other feminine traits to reach the same goals as her male counterparts by different means, and that's what makes Peach stand out. She's tough, intelligent, omni-talented and yet still doesn't mind indulging the male desire to play hero every now and then. That's the kind of leading lady that anyone can appreciate.

That's it for our latest installment and we hope you'll join us next week for another TWGNews Top 10. And don't forget to celebrate our first Anniversary with our first podcast and giveaways. Keep tuned in for more details soon!

Hey followers. I got bored recently, so I’ve decided to dig up a few games from the good old

Hey followers. I got bored recently, so I've decided to dig up a few games from the good old days which are still amazing. What's even more amazing, is the fact that I became so bored, to the extent that I've decided to write a blog about it.

First on the list is Warcraft 3. Of course, people who play this game would hat me for calling it old, but it's true; it was made about 5 years ago, and is still popular. Although there are (in my opinion) better games, some older (Starcraft), and some newer (Warhammer 40000), this game has such a large fan base that online and single player still remains amazingly fresh after so long.

[caption id="attachment_50" align="alignnone" width="469" caption="nothing says "perfect" like a bunch of skeletons on the ground"][/caption]

If one goes online, they will find many people to play with. The units are diverse and interesting, the heroes are great for leading, the story is compelling, and the graphics are quite resilent.

Next up is the oh-so-great Metal Gear Solid, also known as MGS. Of course, since i have to keep all these game review out of the year 2008, I can't include mgs 4 and review it in this post. Either way, the series is still freaking awesome.

The MGS series stars 3 main characters, when it really indirectly revolves mostly around the main-main character, Solid Snake. I personally don't want to ruin the story for those who may wish to start the series or continue it, due to how it is possibly one of the best war stories I've ever had told to me in my life. The graphics qualities increase with each game released.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Am I the only one who noticed that Solid Snake lacks a face in this version?"][/caption]
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="640" caption="lets face facts; no one ever really liked Raiden."][/caption]
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="although this looks like Snake, it isn't. It's the legendary Big Boss"][/caption]

Out of all 3, I'd have to say mgs 3 is my favourite, not because of the MUCH better graphics, but because of the amazing story and gameplay.

Next up is the Star Wars: Battlefronts 1 and 2. Possibly my favourite star wars games, simply because rather than trying to emulate what it would be like to lead the glorious life of a jedi, it shows what it would have been like to be one of the soldiers. Obviously, the online mode is possibly one of the best ones.

Another cool part of battlefront 2 was the space battles. Not only was losing all control of ones ship and flying upside down amazingly entertaining, but it was also fun to land in the enemy hangar and screw around in their base.

The gameplay varies for those who wish to play first person and for those who wish to play third person. Also, if you don't intend on playing as a soldier the whole time, in battlefront 2, heroes are also involved, which dominate the field, but also have a time limit to keep the fairness.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Star Wars has officially accomplished making destruction look beautiful"][/caption]

The second last series of games I'll be showing is the great Soul Calibur 2 and 3. Personally, my favourite fact was that while all other characters wore a shit-load of armouur, the great samurai Mitsurugi wore a bathrobe. I used him all the time.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="698" caption="mitsurugi isn't wearing his classic robe, but he still kicks ass"][/caption]

Final on my list, is Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3. Although I have no idea wtf a Budokai is, its still an amazing looking game, which truly captures the DBZ spirit. The beams look better than they did in the show, the cell shading is great, the game has almost no lag, loads fast, and the gameplay is fast-paced. Just as it should be.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="512" caption="sorry about the low res image. It should look alot better."]<img title="Dragon Ball z budokai 3" src="http://www.dignews.com/admin/screenshoot/budokai_3_review_02.jpg" alt="sorry about the low res image.

We'd like to apologize for the delay of this edition of TGWNews Top 10. A staff meeting had to be cancelled following a certain participant's unpleasantly loud consumption of chips (for anonymity's sake lets call him Allan T), prompting a long overdue ban on all snacks in the conference room. Today we're proud to reveal our list of the Top 10 Emotional Responses, the feelings most vividly experienced while playing video games and the games that best evoke them.

#10:

We Chozo Are Departing Now - Loneliness

While some single-player games see you assuming the role of an entire army or fighting alongside an omnipresent group of teammates, the games you play alone are at their most intuitive when your protagonist is also flying solo. Plus let's face it, the one-versus-many archetype isn't particularly entertaining from the 'many' side. Although your character may be the only one capable of fighting he is generally accompanied by a slew of contacts, lackeys, well-wishers and hanger-ons that prevent you from feeling isolated. There are notable instances, however, where loneliness can serve as the prevailing feel of an entire game.

Metroid Prime is one title that cultivates such an atmosphere. The plot sees you travelling between planets to read about either the recently deceased or the long extinct and on the rare occasion you encounter another humanoid or sentient creature, the policy is shoot first and never ask questions. Among its many other allures, Metroid Prime's ability to stir a powerful emotion is what has made the game so successful. Other titles that may evoke loneliness include the rest of the Metroid series and Ecco the Dolphin.

#9:

Testicles And Pliers - Disgust

The gaming world, not unlike the real world, offers a great variety of repulsive subject matter. What happens to disgust you may not disgust others and vice versa, but there will always be at least one universal source of disgust: cruel and unusual punishment. For this reason Manhunt epitomizes our ninth emotion with its gratuitous torture-centric gameplay.

Disgust usually begets intrigue and immersion, and to proceed through a game even when disgusted with your own actions is a hallmark of quality. This emotional response can bring you as far as a genuine ethical conflict, making it all the more potent to those who seek feeling when they play. Among others that may disgust at times are the Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto franchises.

#8:

Do You Wish To Delete All Save Files? - Confusion

Confusion is often very fleeting, so when a game manages to confuse you consistently and for prolongued periods of time you take notice. Some titles, like Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, are actually designed to mess with your head. With its trademark sanity effects and various fourth wall breaking stunts this is the game to challenge your virtual reality.

Confusion renders us vulnerable and can be a catalyst to more powerful emotions such as fear (more on that later). You're likely to find yourself confused by No More Heroes and the Metal Gear Solid series.

#7:

Friends Are A Nice Thing To Have... - Sympathy

Since video game characters developed personalities, countless have emerged who captured our sympathy. While a study could be done on the more complex sympathetic nature of Metal Gear Solid 3's The Boss, no character so embodies pure sympathy as the Skull Kid from Majora's Mask. With a character arc that sees him go from the lonely misfit of Ocarina of Time to the reviled antagonist of its sequel, who wouldn't feel sorry for this guy?

Despite his less than flattering roles, the Skull Kid is ultimately shown to be the misunderstood victim of the whole scenario. His touching realization at the end of the game allowed all of us to sympathize with the adversity he faced. Most character-driven stories will evoke sympathy, but Metal Gear Solid 3 (as mentioned) and Killer7 are particularly fine examples.

#6:

A Simpler Time - Nostalgia

We're lucky enough to be part of an industry that evolves in leaps rather than steps, and as such it can take as little as five years for a game to become an historical interest. In gaming nostalgia typically takes one of two forms, a desire for a time when games were simpler or a desire for a time when everything was simpler. To our knowledge there's only one game that appeases both of these: Animal Crossing.

Not only does this quaint life simulator revolve around maintaining a tidy home and writing obscene letters to the neighbors, it gives you classic Nintendo titles to play within the game. When you're done with the daily agenda (plant flowers, talk to Sven) you can head home and relax over a round of Balloon Fight. This was undoubtedly one of the most charming additions to the game and hopefully we'll see it revived in City Folk. Other sources of nostalgia include the Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and Virtual Console services.

#5:

Dead Cell, Pliskin, Mr. X - Anticipation

Any game worth its salt will have you wanting to see more, but Kojima caters to this emotional response best with the relentless plot twists and cliffhangers of Metal Gear Solid 2. Not a segment goes by that doesn't introduce a new character or plot element to drive your progress forward. Many games on the other hand get along with a single grand prize at the end.

You'll find some form of anticipation in every game you play, but for a particularily acute sense of it try the other Metal Gear Solid games and the Final Fantasy series.

#4:

This Game Sucks - Disappointment

One of a few emotions on the list that is distributed generously and equally across all forms of media, most gamers don't have to look beyond their own collections to find disappointment. The internet hype machine has sent disappointment skyrocketing throughout the community, but the problem was endemic even prior to this.

Perhaps the greatest disappointment of all was the unplayable Atari port of Pac-Man. Unlike its partner in industry destruction, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, the arcade native Pac-Man was known to the public as one of the best video games before it even saw release on the system. This compounded the ensuing disappointment as consumers tried desperately to reconcile not only how bad the game was, but how Atari could manage to screw up Pac-Man! If you desire further disappointment, first seek counselling, then buy third party Wii titles indiscriminately.

#3:

The Most Unexciting Place On Mars - Fear

Video games are quite adept at eliciting fear from players. They can be made to be longer and more immersive than film or radio plays (keep your fedoras on War of the Worlds enthusiasts). Doom 3 is one high profile title that accomplishes this, set in the dark environment of a Mars colony that sees an unusually high influx of zombies.

As fear is the emotion most important to survival, horror games often inspire a deep sense of concern for the protagonist's well being and a heightened emotional connection to the game itself. Other games that exemplify the genre include the Resident Evil series and the Silent Hill series.

#2:

$#%&!!!11!!one! - Frustration

We typically play games to relax and unwind, but it's not always the best way to do it. When was the last time you hurled your television remote across the room, kicked your CD player or snapped a DVD disc even when the equipment itself was working fine? User interaction and skill-based participation give video games the advantage in bringing out our utmost rage and frustration.

A recent example is Dead Or Alive 4, which had not only an extremely difficult story mode but lacked the satisfying ending resolutions (compared to its predecessor) to justify it. Other games you may find frustrating include Ninja Gaiden and many notorious classics such as Battletoads.

#1:

For The Love Of The Game - Enjoyment

While most of the other entries can be construed as forms of enjoyment, we still thought this deserved a seperate placement. Enjoyment is the most important, visceral and widespread emotional response to video gaming and it's the reason we play to begin with. Games were made to entertain and they're particularly good at what they do.

There's enjoyment to be found in almost every game on almost every console, but if we're to pick a game to represent enjoyment it's going to be Super Mario Bros. Regardless of loyalties and preferences there shouldn't be a gamer out there that can't enjoy this classic masterpiece. If you want to find more games to enjoy, this would be a good place to start.

You've heard our piece, now lets hear what you have to say. What games made you feel lonely, confused or scared? Please feel free to leave any questions or comments and thanks for reading. Barring any unforseen circumstances we'll see you on Tuesday next week!

This one was released like, four years ago? Oh well. It still deserves a post, however, for a most satisfying experience. Yes, I just finished it four years after the rest of the world has, so slow, aren't I? Not my fault though- I just happened to receive a PS2 recently, and the game was there as well, so I thought I might as well... I suppose all the die-hard fans will be laughing at me for this one- I played the game on Very Easy mode. I hear the snickers already.

But who cares about that? The whole thing was just a bloody ordeal, repeating the same senseless things again and again... then again, that may have been due to the level I played at, and the fact that although this is supposed to be a stealth game, I just kept blowing things up...

Blablabla. This is not going to degenerate into a game review, nor some fanboy's wild ravings. Who cares about gameplay, graphics and all that? Well alright I do. But not here- this has to be one of the most satisfying games I've ever completed. The cutscenes and backstory are excellently executed- I was really feeling for the main character, Snake, as he ( I ) blundered his way through jungles, mountains, and several odd bosses... not something that happens to me often.

The final cutscene was perfect. How often would someone feel empty and dejected upon finishing a good game? That final sequence when Snake went up to the President, shook hands, took his medal, posed for the camera, and all the while... gah. This is definitely movie material. Now who would be the perfect guy for the role? Johnny Depp, perhaps?

...now imagine Depp crawling around a heavily guarded military base in that infamous cardboard box...><

But there's one particular song that's always stuck on my playlist: "Debriefing" by Harry Gregson-Williams. It plays during the ending scenes. It's so good that it should be made the official theme song for Memorial and Veteran's Day. Not kidding, it's absolutely brilliant. Especially the part starting at 2:48. The build-up is so damn moving. RIP The Boss.

The Metal Gear franchise isn't famous for its intense score, but nothing gets me into a game more than an epic soundtrack. This is the theme of MGS3. While not my favorite in the series, it was this song that made the trailer for me. Nothing else at the time was quite as epic and mind-blowing. Give it up for the Theme of Metal Gear Solid 3!

These are my five favorite game endings. I didn’t feel like writing up a “Top 10″

These are my five favorite game endings. I didn't feel like writing up a "Top 10" for this list. So I shortened it to five. They each contain the majorest of spoilers possible. So read the game title first to see if it's okay for you to continue. You've been warned.

5. Legacy of Kain: Defiance
When I first beat this game and watched the final cutscene, I didn't realize that I had just seen the ending. I was completely confused as the credits began to roll. It was ridiculous. Kain kills Moebius, Raziel eats Moebius' soul and then possesses his corpse tricking Kain into absorbing him into the Reaver, Kain beats the shit out of the Elder God, and Kain just reflects on the recent happenings and what's to come next. Talk about a cliffhanger. If you're familiar with the series' storyline, you should understand that a lot has been left unfinished. I hope a new installment is released one day.

4. Final Fantasy X
Tidus dies.

3. Shadow of the Colossus
This one was unexpected. It turns out that the hero was tricked into slaying the colossi so that the ominous voice can possess him and transform into a large shadow monster thing...or something. This monster is then forcibly sucked into a magical fountain and transformed into a baby with horns. Which explains the whole ICO situation. The hero's girlfriend wakes up at last, picks up the baby, and the two and their horse live happily ever after in the forbidden land...or something. I don't know, but I like it.

2. Metal Gear Solid 3
Now this was an emotional climax. Naked Snake kills his mentor/mother/something more, fights Ocelot, bangs EVA, learns that The Boss died for her country and that no one will know of her unrivaled patriotism, receives the title Big Boss, and moves on with his life. Perhaps I would have shed a tear if I wasn't a robot.

1. No More Heroes
Insane. It's the only fitting adjective that I can think of to describe No More Heroes' ending. The first ranked assassin is killed by some woman who turns out to be Travis' half-sister Jeane who murdered his family back in the day. The two siblings fight. Shinobu suddenly appears with her hand reattached and helps Travis at the last second. Travis uses this opportunity to kill Jeane. Travis returns home believing that it's all over, but is then attacked by the new #2 while he's on the toilet. He's saved by Henry and they begin to fight outside of Travis' home. Henry reveals that he is Travis' twin brother and Silvia's husband as the two run through the city and clash Rocky III style. It all raps up with Sylvia telling the player that there won't be a sequel, but then a Back to the Future-esque To Be Continued sign appears. Seriously.

Metal Gear Solid 3 OST - Harry Gregson-Williams

Perhaps the greatest sign of how William's music for the Metal Gear Solid games has proven his talent is that he is now composing scores for blockbuster films, including Kingdom of Heaven and The Chronicles of Narnia. His music has become synonymous with the Metal Gear franchise, so much so that when it was rumoured that he would not be scoring the soundtrack for the third game on the PS2, fans were up in arms and he was drafted back into the fold.

Unlike the more electronic influenced atmosphere of MGS2, William's takes a great deal of inspiration from the jungle setting of Snake Eater (the codename of the third game, if you will) using instrumentation that conjures up startling imagery of the dense forests and enclosing you into the claustrophobic atmosphere that dominates the cat and mouse nature of the game.

There's some wonderful tracks, including the MGS3 version of the Metal Gear theme. Here he relies on his knowledge of computer tricks to create a track that builds up into a blisteringly fast take on the now familiar tune that introduces Solid Snake's adventures.

Currently Williams has returned to Konami to work on the soundtrack for the fourth game in the series, Guns of the Patriots. With the additional capabilities of the PS3 and the more action orientated focus of the next game many fans are eagerly anticipating what is in store.

Halo Original Soundtrack - Marty O'Donnell

Despite never buying into the hype that surrounded Halo's seemingly holy coming onto the Xbox, I remained intrigued once all the initial fuss had died down as to what was so outrageously spectacular about this apparently by the numbers first person shooter. Alien weapons? Check. Silent protagonist? Check. Ridiculous sci-fi story? Check. Bombastic orchestral score that rises a run of the mill videogame to epic levels that demand attention - check.

As players fought the hard slogged battle of Halo, with the now legendary Master Chief, Marty O'Donnel was behind them every step of the way, creating a soundtrack that imbued the whole game with the feel of a Hollywood science fiction film, a score that rose and fell at all the right moments, and a collection of music that represented not only the sheer quality of game making on offer from Bungie studios, but the first real combination of big budget movie production values and video games, a mixture that now more than ever the majority of gamers take for granted.

Final Fantasy 9 OST - Nobuo Uematsu

Ok, ok so there is a certain element of flak I'm open to in choosing two Final Fantasy soundtracks out of five. But as much as I tried to find an alternative collection to close this first edition of 'Five of the Best' off, the more I kept on thinking about this fantastic behemoth of work that was to be Uematsu's last composition for a series of games that owes just as much to him for it's success as it does the game play and script writers.

FF9 seemed to get a lot of mixed reactions when it came out, with critics falling over themselves to give it exceptionally high ratings, whereas a lot of fans were left in two minds as to whether it was good or not. I won't go into details, as personally I regard the game as one of the best in the series, but there was one thing that remained unequivocally great - the soundtrack.

Once again Uematsu proved himself a deft master at creating songs that immersed themselves into the somewhat medieval atmosphere of FF9's world. What he has always been talented at is the way he makes the music hold the same personality of the towns and villages you visit throughout the game, sounding so detailed as to give even a blind person an impression of the places. Qu's Marsh, a boggy land where you find Quina Quen is introduced with grand drumming and some bizarre voices, and when you see the frogs bouncing about the place you almost can't help but imagine them singing, Budweiser advert style. The theme to the regal city of Lindblum is laid back and cool, aligning perfectly with the bohemian lives of it's inhabitants.

Finally, the theme of this game, the beautifully titled 'The Place I'll Return To Someday' is one that has haunted me since I first put the game into my Playstation all those years ago. The simple melody climbs up and down, a musical representation of the struggles ahead and the traditional instrumentation immediately succeeds in introducing you to the world of Final Fantasy 9.

So there it is, five of the best video game soundtracks in my humble opinion. Ludicrously geeky I know, but I like to think that with the sudden acceptance of video games as a valid form of art comparable to films, that the composers of video game music begin to receive more recognition and respect for their work. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment, I'll be more than happy to hear from you!

If you're interested in checking some of this music out, then you can download a vast array of OST's from Blue Laguna and Galbadia Hotel, two wonderful resources.

My friend Sam lent me Metal Gear Solid 3 to play over spring vacation. So rather than my usual being outside at all times on warm days pattern, I'm trying to fit in some time to play this game. This is the first stealth game I've every played to beat. All over times I've tried this type of game I've failed miserably. After I'm done with it I'll be sure to post a review, but I'm not sure how long that will take.

I started a few hours ago, but keep getting distracted by the need to shower get dressed eat breakfast and search my usual internet spots. For instance, right now I'm writing a blog post instead of playing. Playing for a little while I can already see that this will be a challenge for me. While the genre of the game is appealing to me, the gameplay is tough. This is no point and click game.

If there are no enemies around then it's quite easy, but there are always enemies. Trying to get to your destination, you will encounter many snooping around just waiting for someone to try and get by. The object is to get by them without detection, which for me is proving difficult. I always have the urge to just go right in there and hack away, which of course brings in ten more enemies to back up the one I've killed.

I'll get in the hang of it. I hope.

I’m going to have trouble putting into words what makes this game fantastic.
Metal Gear Solid

I'm going to have trouble putting into words what makes this game fantastic.

Metal Gear Solid 3 sees director Hideo Kojima perfecting the game's formula. The mixture of film styles and narratives that was introduced in MGS1 and overplayed in MGS2 now find perfect balance, creating a unique combination of real-world and fantasy elements. What is at first a seemingly formulaic sixties spy thriller becomes a strange animé mindfuck, Hollywood action movie and an emotional tale of love and retribution all at once.

The length and number of cutscenes may make Snake Eater seem like an interactive movie, but there is a suprisingly deep and tactical game of survival underneath. The game has a strange duality of realistic cutscenes and overly "gamey" gameplay, with the trademark "!" appearing over alerted soldiers, and enemies providing unlikely audio cues ("Wait, I thought I heard something over there!") to assist players. It is surprising how much tension is increased with the removal of the radar.

As for the cutscenes themselves, they are the best yet to be seen in the series. This can partly be attributed to the inclusion of not just one of the coolest videogame characters ever, but three. Naked Snake, Young Ocelot and The Boss possess such screen presence that it rivals that of Hollywood A-List'ers. The story that is told through these cutscenes is an incredibly involving, thrilling, and heartfelt tale of overzealous patriotism and bitter loss. The ending to this game is the best ending I have ever seen come out of this industry, period.

The only game that could even possibly hope to come close to achieving what Snake Eater has is Metal Gear Solid 4, but this remains to be seen.

The greatest theme ever.
