Elin bad mig sjunga "All I want for christmas", and what Elin wants Elin gets- och visst blev det en riktig publiksuccé.

Whenever I have time to myself and I really want to relax I like to go to a museum. The Norton Simon is practically in my back yard, it's like a little gem tucked away in Pasadena. Relatively small, it's not overwhelming, no fear of Art overdose (meaning, its not the Louvre!) and it has a beautiful Sculpture Garden with an outdoor cafe. Do yourself a favor, visit an art museum today!
Check out what I saw:

Van Gogh: Portrait of a Peasant
Degas (they have a large collection of Degas)

Merci :-)

Following yesterday’s Illustration lecture I thought I’d put together some good contextu

Following yesterday's Illustration lecture I thought I'd put together some good contextuals for their line work.

I'll start with a portrait artist who I have never heard of before, and I assume is from quite a few years back!

J.A.D. Ingres

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="298" caption="Ingres"][/caption]

In his prelim sketches for clients he would always spend hours on the face, getting the face perfect. Then he would use really loose lines for all the other aspects of the image. According to my illus tutor, its because they would sell the portrait on facial recognition - very obvious notion now I think of it!
I just wish I could draw like this without it taking hours and hours!

Matisse

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="322" caption="Matisse"][/caption]

Okay, so I'll admit now, I don't like Matisse, but we've got a task doing positive and negative cutouts (I assume inspired by Matisse) so I'm trying to learn to at least like him.

David Hockney

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="298" caption="David Hockney"][/caption]

In honesty I can't remember what Hockney images she showed us, and I only used this one seeing as I am referencing their use of line - I can't say I find him memorable as he is someone else I am not too hot on but I have to admit he is a fantastic artist, just not to my liking!

Paul Cox

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="420" caption="Paul Cox"][/caption]

Okay so I only discovered this guy yesterday in lecture. My notes say 'Paul Cox - MOVEMENT, Brush pen, realism, NO straight lines' obviously I didn't have much to say about him then but I underlined his name and gave him a big red star, haha.
I love the fact there are NO straight lines. My tutor today said something about him using his elbow as a pivot for the drawings, and that makes a lot of sense, as that would restrict the use of straight lines. I don't know a lot about Paul Cox, and haven't seen much of his work, so he's a must on my look up list.

Tomer Hanuka

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="344" caption="Tomer Hanuka"][/caption]

Someone who I had seen before lecture yesterday! Came across him in Juxtapoz magazine (My bible) and fell in love. I can't tell you exactly all the things I love about Hanuka's work but I think he's mindblowing. His line work is supurb. His colour choices are exceptional - just look him up and see for yourself just how wonderful this guy is!

Gerald Scarfe

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Gerald Scarfe"][/caption]

Didn't know his name? Knew the work though right?! Loved his work for AGES! Scarfe is fantastic. Very recognisable style, epspecially after Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall stuff. I just love the craziness of his characters. And I don't know why but the first time I ever saw the Squid in Spongebob Squarepants I thought of Gerald Scarfe!

Ralph Steadman

There's a delightful article by Adam Gopnik in the latest (September 22, 2008) issue of The New Yorker about some controversies surrounding the Babar series. Here's a clip:

In the past few decades, a series of critics on the left, most notably the Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman, have indicted Babar in the course of a surprisingly resilient and hydra-headed argument about the uses of imagery and the subtleties of imperialist propaganda. Babar, such interpreters have insisted, is an allegory of French colonization, as seen by the complacent colonizers: the naked African natives, represented by the “good” elephants, are brought to the imperial capital, acculturated, and then sent back to their homeland on a civilizing mission. The elephants that have assimilated to the ways of the metropolis dominate those which have not.

Fascinating. As is the rest of the article, which among other things touches on: a wholly different controversy regarding the fate of Babar's mother, the occupations of animals, nationalistic representations of order and disorder in children's literature, and Matisse.

Bericht aan mijn zonen.

Liefste Senne, liefste Matisse,

I wouldn't care less.

Time flies.

I mentioned a couple of posts ago that we had just returned from Nice. What a fabulous place and it is easy to see why the rich and famous and not so rich or famous head there. We arrived to a rather cloudy overcast day but at least it was warm - about 26 degrees. The hotel was right on the Promenade des Anglais and our room overlooked the sea.

[caption id="attachment_624" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="View from Hotel Room "][/caption]

The following day we decided to walk round the headland to the West of the town from Villefranche sur Mer. We stepped off the train and within a few hundred yards were on a superb little beach with a diving pontoon and a swimming area bouyed off from the boats coming out of the marina. It sort of set the tone for the whole holiday. Walk a bit, head round a corner, 'Oh that looks a nice beach' swim, sunbathe, potter on a little further. Walking in the Dales is nothing like this!

The old town of Nice is a warren of small streets full of restaurants, bars and shops. We ate there a couple of times but it is not cheap - £7 a pint of lager!

[caption id="attachment_625" align="alignnone" width="225" caption="Isle St Marguerite"]

On the Saturday we took a trip to an island just south of Cannes. It's called Isle St Marguerite and is just 4 Km long and about one Km wide. It has no vehicles and is even no smoking! The trip took about an hour and was quite bumpy across the bay. We walked along the coast stopping every so often then on the South side found a fantastic little cove. It was about 15 ft wide and just exqusite. I swam out of the cove with Stephen's camera, which is waterproof to take a photo of 'our beach' and will post the photos along with loads of others onto the flickr site when they've been downloaded. It was just idyllic and I could have spent all day just taking photos of yet another beautiful view. The island is covered in pine and eucalyptus trees making the air scented and delicious.

It wasn't all sun, sea and beaches though, we did visit the Museum of Modern Art and the Matisse Museum which are all free. The Matisse is held in a beautiful 17th century mansion surrounded by olive trees in a park to the North of the city and is worth the visit. I also managed to get the timer to work on my phone camera so here are the happy couple on the steps of the Museum of Modern Art.

Punto primo.

A proposito.

A Taste of Art

September 10, 2008

I received an email in the morning from a vendor rep which read (I hope she won't mind me pasting it here): "Realize this is short notice, but we have an open spot at a client/agency appreciation event tonight at MOMA starting at 5:15 pm. Would love to have you join if you're available. It's a private tour of the galleries followed by cocktail hour within the museum. If any of you are art enthusiasts, let me know as soon as you can and I'll add you to the list."

You can probably imagine my heart skipping a beat after this. Not that I know a lot about art, but I do appreciate museums and any sort of private tour is always a bonus, not to mention cocktail hour.

Although this is technically a blog about eating, I think that eating and food presentation can be considered an art, and since they are not so far removed from each other, I'll briefly touch on a few artists that I remember from the one-hour private tour at the MOMA.

We started with the history of modern art - great pieces by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Braque. With Picasso's Demoiselles D'Avignon (Five women from Avignon), the museum tour guide explained that cubism is the art of using shapes to show many different perspectives of the object through a one-dimensional medium of the canvas. It's almost as if you could peel the object off the painting, and construct it into 3-D form by simply taking the shapes the artists present and gluing them together.

We moved on to Matisse, who had a different perspective on modern art. In his Red Studio, he uses a solid red background, but is able to convey the sense of three-dimensionalism despite a lack of shading or depth.

The tour ended with some pieces that most think about when they think about modern art - Jackson Pollock, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, and ended with a few pieces by Andy Warhol.

Before I talk about the food aspects for this post, I do want to pension that Jackson Pollock is among my favorite modern artists. Some people may think that his work is pure chaos, but that day, standing there in front of the paint splattered Number 31, I connected with the work. To me, there is structure admist the wilderness in his work, and to me, it represented life, the connections, the fabric, the network, the spontaneity, love, hatred, everything. I imagined Pollock dancing with the paint on his canvas, the beauty of the strokes, pre-meditated yet unknown. I almost started crying.

Ok, a little bit to philosophical and sentimental for this blog space. Let's talk about the food...

The Modern

www.themodernnyc.com
9 West 53rd Street

The Modern is actually a dining are connected to the MOMA, but remains open after the museum closes. The atmosphere is chic, modern, (obviously) - everything you'd imagine in a small trendy restaurant attached to one of the world's most celebrated museums.

We were ushered to a special room booked specifically for our host company and served a choice of red wine, white wine, champagne, and typical cocktails.

Hors D'oeuvres:

Salmon Tartare with sunny-side up quail egg on top - this was my favorite hors d'oeuvre of the night. I love quail egg, and it was presented in a lovely way. The egg complemented the taste of the salmon very well, and the crouton on which the salmon sat created a contrast of textures.

Crab ravioli - also delicious, the ravioli was slightly fried to create a concept similar to a samosa.

Overall on a scale of 1-10: 8 this score is based solely on the cocktail hour, so I wasn't able to try the dinner menu, but it was a great way to spend an evening at "work".
