Of course the dock has a lot of animations in it that makes it more fun for the user. 

Apple has now won a patent for this dock. This patent can have a lot of impact in the future design of user interfaces in operating systems. There are existing software like Object Dock and Rocket Dock that lets a user have a Mac OS like dock on Windows based operating systems. The recently released KDE 4 platform offers plasmoids that look and behave like the Mac OS docks. Also, very recently, Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth said that his company is putting in more effort on the GUI aspect of Ubuntu to make it more like the Mac OS. Chances are high that such an effort would also involve developing a dock for Ubuntu.

The question is would all these attempts and implementations be in violation of this patent? If so future UI development efforts would need to make a shift in their design paradigms. A bigger question is how would Apple deal with such potential violators? In a nutshell, this patent can have grave ramifications on the future of desktop computing.

And here's why I feel that a $800 laptop from Apple is really a lot of hogwash. This statement is based on how Apple wants to be perceived. Ever since its shift to Intel based motherboards, Apple has gained more momentum with its laptops and desktop systems. In spite of this Apple has always maintained a very high markup on its hardware though the components it uses are pretty much the same when compared to Windows laptops. So why would Apple do so? Simple Apple wants to be perceived as an exotic entity. They want their customers to feel exclusive. What better way to achieve this than to markup their prices to the extent of putting their products beyond most people?

The only thing that would probably justify Apple's pricing is their operating system. The Mac OS is right now the most user friendly system on the planet and Apple has every right to ask a premium for it. But when you add this premium to the already high markup that Apple keeps for commodity hardware, the final price just goes beyond most people. 

So the $800 MacBook is probably nothing but a lot of hogwash. What might be available at $800 from Apple maybe a netbook. What would Apple call it? The Mac NetBook?

I boot my Knoppix Live DVD with the keyboard in my native language (Spanish) just to be able to type without too much hassle:

knoppix lang=es

Then when the KDE is up and running, I open a terminal and configure IP address, routing table and nameservers to use. I haven't got any DHCP server at home, if you have got one, you can skip all the commands up to launching the browser.

If you haven't got a DHCP server, and you don't know your configuration data, you can get it either from Windows or from GNU/Linux with the following commands:

Windows: ipconfig /all and route print
GNU/Linux: ifconfig, route -n and cat /etc/resolv.conf

Open terminal: ALT + F2 (konsole)
Configure network interface: ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx up (use your own IP address and network mask)
Set default gateway: route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (use your own gateway IP)
Set nameservers: vi /etc/resolv.conf (enter two lines of the type nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with your nameservers, use :wq to save the file and quit the vi editor)
Launch the browser: ALT + F2 (firefox or konqueror)

Now you can perform all your online banking knowing that you are doing it from a clean system (provided you trust Knoppix DVD code and your bank secure connection method). May be once you get used to GNU/Linux you even install it and use on a daily basis, so that you can enjoy of all of its benefits and some of its problems ;-)

This may also prove us why it is important the use of standars and the fact that the Internet sites do work fine with all of the different kind of browsers all around. Would your bank worked only with Internet Explorer (just to name one), you couldn't have been able to use a CD/DVD Live OS to maximize your online banking security and privacy.

Asus is coming out with the Eee S101 later this year toward the end of 2008. Even though this notebook doesnt' really fit in the same category as the Macbook Air, it comes close. This compact netbook is extremely portable and actually comes with much more practical features than the Macbook Air. It has everything that I need. Three USB ports, Win XP, bluetooth for a mouse, card reader. And it comes at a fraction of the cost.

So yes, interesting indeed.

With the deadline for Apple's laptop refresh looming there are lot of rumors doing the rounds alongwith some very interesting photographs of the purpoted new laptops. The reports about Nvidia playing an important part in the new Apple laptops have also sparked a new speculation - the laptop shown on Nvidia's home page is actually the new Apple Macbook Pro. Take a look:

There have been reports that Nvidia has been showing off the graphics capabilities on the new Macbook Pros running on Nvidia chipsets to its employees. So there might be some credence to these rumours.

The design shown in the photo is more inline with Apple's design philosophies as demonstrated in its previous models. But is this the one? Well we just have to wait to know the answer to that one.

Mi opinión al respecto no puede ser más que la de apoyo hacia las controvertidas pero sabias palabras de este pelado que se jacta de ser el nuevo presidente de Microsoft, ¿porque? Simple, soy de los que creen que Mac es una gran compañía y sin lugar a dudas poseen una buena gama de productos, pero debo admitir que sus sistemas operativos muchas veces resultan un tanto complicados para el usuario promedio. Qué decir de la disponibilidad de software, si utilizas mucho creo que te encontrarías en un gran aprieto ya que en comparación a los productos creados para las plataformas Windows la variedad de programas es muy escasa.

Sin ir más lejos he hablado con mucha gente que podría ser considerada usuario promedio y me he encontrado en más de un caso con que muchos se sienten cautivados con “esa hermosa manzanita de la tapa” y “ese lindo acabado en color blanco o metálico que tienen sus PC y notebooks”. Puedo asegurarles a todos los que compren Mac por estos aspectos (y porque no para sobresalir ante el resto) que van a necesitar un mapa para poder aprender el uso cotidiano de un Mac OS.

Quiero aclarar que no soy un defensor de Microsoft, sino de las PC en general ya que considero que estas ofrecen una gama de posibilidades y configuraciones inigualables. Además sería muy estúpido de mi parte no admitir la genialidad de los Productos de Mac, que ofrecen soluciones muy convenientes aunque a veces un tanto costosas.

En fin, algún día quizas las Mac sean las más utilizadas que las PC, pero hasta ese entonces seguiré siendo firmemente una de las 32 personas que eligen sin lugar a dudas una PC…

The symptoms might be programs quitting unexpectedly, preferences not being remembered, programs not launching, etc. This is where Repair Disk Permissions utility comes in.

To repair permissions, open the Disk Utility program found in the Applications/Utility folder on your hard drive. At the top of the Disk Utility window is a row of tabs.  Click on the First Aid tab.  On the left is a list of the disk and volumes mounted on your computer system.

You need to click to highlight your main hard drive. In the right window pane in the lower left click on the repair disk permission. After the repair you can restart your Mac. I would also recommend running this repair after each new software update runs.

Las personas que utilizamos Linux, nos adaptamos a alguna que otra complicación que surja, como por ejemplo que no podemos instalar Shockwave ya que solo hay una versión para Windows, pero continuamos, habrá muchos obstáculos pero continuamos.

Se que usted si es usuario de Windows, debe estar satisfecho del trabajo que realiza su PC con Windows XP, se que no va a cambiar de idea, a usted le resulta más fácil quedarse con Windows que lanzarse con los ojos cerrados a Linux.

Si usted ve la oportunidad de que ya no quiere seguir con la rutina que tiene su PC con Windows, optará por probar Linux.

Windows es un buen SO, pero tiene sus fallos como cualquier software, nadie es perfecto, ni Linux es perfecto, tiene por ahí algún que otro fallo...

Se que mucha gente le da igual los estándares abiertos, pero es que es algo muy importante, Microsoft se salta las reglas y hace lo que quiere. Cada año saca su propio estándar y lo hace porque quiere hundir a la competencia, lógicamente, Microsoft no es tonto.. se aprovecha de cualquier ocasión para intentar hundir a la competencia.

Para que hablar de Linux, si la mayoría de la gente piensa que es un SO para personas muy avanzadas en conocimientos de PC, mentira, pero eso piensa.

Cada año se intenta mejorar esa imagen, cualquier persona como por ejemplo una Ama de Casa puede utilizar Linux, lo que falta son ganas. Si esta Ama de Casa, dice que esta muy contenta con Windows, pues no va a decidir utilizar Linux, para que si total son lo mismo, pero con alguna que otra diferencia.

Linux siempre ha estado a la sombra de Windows y Mac OS. Viendo como se peleaban por el trono de mejor SO del mundo, lo consiguió Windows utilizando sus armas de monopolio, al igual que lo hizo Apple.

Pero llegó la hora de que Linux entrase en casas, oficinas y cualquier lugar de trabajo. Linux ofrece lo mismo que Windows, lo único es que los empresas de Hardware se olvidan de crear un driver para Linux, hay alguna que otra empresa que se acuerda de Linux, pero la mayoría le dan la espalda.

Por eso Windows está en el lugar que está, casi todos los fabricantes de Hardware le dan los drivers específicos para que su producto funcione de maravilla con Windows.

Por eso Linux, lo utiliza muy poca gente.

The (windows) Alt + Tab future is not working. Mac OS might be using a different key instead.

While searching through the net I came across Command + Tab. You can use this key to switch through open program in Mac OS.

Last week Murillo told me about the XBMC project and since my media center was lacking of a good software to browse my collection I decided to install it. My set up is composed by a Mac Mini running Mac OS X. Front Row is terrible, it does not support a lot of formats and some media codecs are very slow.

My first impression on XBMC was very good. The interface is totally eye-candy with support for skins and other customizations. The support for file formats and codecs are so extensive that if I had to describe it here I would spend a lot of time ;). But, for my purpose it only have to play mkv (matroska) in 720p smoothly, which it did flawless.

Also, the support for plugins and scripts enables the XBMC to play YouTube videos, download lyrics and subtitles, and much more. And the best thing is that the plugins are written in python!

Of course the XMBC has some issues since it is on a beta version. I witnessed some freezes on playback and on some scripts. Also, the navigation using mouse is not fully operational (at least on the skins available). Some subtitles don't work very well and are not displayed.

This is a common Mac troubleshooting procedure, and fixes a multitude of software and hardware problems.

PRAM stands for Parameter RAM, and contains the following stored information:

Display and video settings such as refresh rate, screen resolution, number of colors

Time zone setting

Startup volume choice

Speaker volume

Recent kernel panic information, if any

You will not lose any data stored on your Macs drives, and system and application preferences besides the above will remain intact.

How to Reset your PRAM

Reboot your Mac

Hold down Command Apple - Option Alt - P - R

When you have heard the chime for the second time, release the keys and the Mac will boot as normal

Once your operating system has loaded, you may need to verify your time zone, startup volume, and volume settings using System Preferences

En un artículo de la PC Magazine, encontré la opinión de Steve Ballmer(presidente y director ejecutivo de Microsoft) ante esta campaña, ya que Microsoft es tomado como el ícono de la PC.

"Opino que necesitan corregirse. Pronto nos verán con una presencia mucho más vigorosa en cuanto en cuanto a la PC. La verdad, todo es irónico. La PC supera en ventas a Mac en 32 a 1. No obstante, el hecho que nosotros no vendemos PC-sólo vendemos Windows a los fabricantes de PC-, resulta interesante porque el ataque entonces no es para nosotros. Pero nos verán defendiendo a las PC: las PC son mejores que las Mac. Eso no esta en discusión. 32 de cada 33 personas compran una PC en lugar de una Mac. No digo que no haya ciertas cosas que la gente prefiera de las Mac; por lo visto sí las hay...
...Entonces, si 32 de cada 33 personas eligen una PC, ésta debe de ser mejor que Mac, y esa historia merece ser contada. Es una historia de opciones."

La nueva campaña publicitaria de Microsoft, "I´m a PC", muestra a la gente como tú y yo, gente común que suele tener problemas y diferentes puntos de vista. Es un golpe directo a la campaña de Apple, y es la acción de las palabras que resalte anteriormente.
