If you're an astronomer who also just so happens to know a thing or two about French electronic shoegazing artists, the name M83 will probably ring a couple of bells. But for the rest of us, not only is it the moniker adopted by French musician Anthony Gonzalez, it's also of the name of a galaxy often more poetically referred to as The Thousand-Ruby Galaxy (pictured).

M83's most recent album Saturdays = Youth is a mini-masterpiece. To a noticeable degree, Gonzales has moved away from (or built upon) his previous shoegazing style: those barely audible lyrics and a treble sound that is almost uncomfortably high pitched at times (I have sensitive ears). Instead, he has expand into a sort of ambient, angsty, 80's nostalgia that is a great deal more accessible than previous stuff. It is most definitely worth a purchase.

Despite all the talk here of the new album, the below song comes from a prior release called Before the Dawn Heals Us. It's a song for the end of the night.

I guess I'm kicking it off so here goes:

MUSIC TO LOVE TO.
This is a 22 song mix that has been kicking around my iTunes for a while now, I've built it up after a few weeks in college and it's not perfect, but so far it's just the best damn music to enjoy life to.  There is nothing particularly obscure about this mix, it's just music to love to. I've found that if you're about to get down, thinking that may happen sometime in the course of the night, maybe just leave your computer on with iTunes opens, with this playlist ready to run.

I guess it gets off to a fun start, happy and quick, sort of what you'd need, the song titles and lyrics are almost more relevent then anything else, so take a quick read through. Then it changes, it's odd how a lot of these are down tempo tracks, a lot are kind of sad, I guess they evoke just the right of nostalgia for great cuddling or peacefulness or just being happy. Because after all love is just as much about the sucky sad bits as the beautiful lovely bits. So in all senses of the word, I present to you the inaugural mix, and something I've had running non-stop since I got here. Music to Love to.

Explanation:

Big, bright, and beautiful, spiral galaxy M83 lies a mere twelve million light-years away, near the southeastern tip of the very long constellation Hydra. Prominent spiral arms traced by dark dust lanes and blue star clusters lend this galaxy its popular name of the Southern Pinwheel. But reddish star forming regions that dot the sweeping arms highlighted in this sparkling color composite also suggest another nickname, The Thousand-Ruby Galaxy. About 40,000 light-years across, M83 is a member of a group of galaxies that includes active galaxy Centaurus A. The core of M83 itself is bright at x-ray energies, showing a high concentration of neutron stars and black holes left from an intense burst of star formation. The sharp image, based on archival data from the European Southern Observatory's Wide Field Imager camera, also features spiky foreground Milky Way stars and distant background galaxies.

Une nouvelle fois, la programmation du festival parisien BBMix est plus qu'alléchante. Articulé autour de 5 soirées à thèmes, la scène du Carré Bellefeuille à Boulogne-Billancourt recevra plus d'une quinzaine d'artistes proposant une définition alternative et audacieuse de la musique moderne.

On retiendra particulièrement la soirée du 30 Octobre menée par l'excellente électro-pop M83 et l'ambiant glaciale de Baltic Fleet. L'après-midi du Dimanche 26 Octobre donnera carte blanche au trio NLF3 (rock instrumental vif et syncopé à la Battles) pour une interprétation des Aventures du Prince Ahmed de Lotte Reiniger. Enfin, en guise de clôture, le 1er Novembre, les improbables Chrome Hoof défendront sur scène leur fusion disco-métal étourdissante. Une rendez-vous à ne pas manquer.

I love Saturdays = Youth

It nearly made my top 5 albums for the year (I actually keep thinking maybe it should have) but the list is still my list. Anyways, the obvious single (for me) is the epic power Kim and Jessie. Sure it's actually about two girls who do drugs in the woods (or drink, I forget), but let's forget that for a sec and imagine it to be a John Hughe's movie about a high-school couple madly in love.

This is a great live performance for you kids and adults. I love the ending where the woman's voice fills out the high notes. The song is performed at Pitchfork.tv. Skip the interview, the interviewee is a douche who's looking for something ironic to appreciate... ironically. Anthony Gonzalez (head of M83) is charming, even though he struggles with his english at times.

M83 is French electronic music group whose musical style owes something to the shoegazing genre in its extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instrumentals. The idea of youth – wasted, gilded or otherwise – has featured prominently in M83's music. Says Anthony Gonzalez (aka M83) of new single, "Kim & Jessie": "A lot of people always tell me that M83 is always about melancholy music, so I wanted to write something happy with hooks.”

"Kim & Jessie" is such a feel good song. The video (which came out last month but is just recently on Sweden's ZTV playlist) features two teenage girls in tutus performing synchronized roller skating routines, battling yellow tutu girls, skating downhill, and inline skating with some guys. Roller skating is great. One of the girls (probably Kim) even has a pair of Nikes on a quad-skate platform.

A top notch video concept indeed, but I was disappointed when Kim & Jessie didn't turn out to be lovers. They sure seemed tight for the first 2:30.

Η επαρχία της Νότιας Γαλλίας μπορεί να μην έχει ζωή όλο το χρόνο , όμως έχει αυτά τα τοπία που σου κόβουν την ανάσα , εικόνες που σε εθίζουν στην ονειροπόληση. Ο μικρός Anthony Gonzalez μεγαλώνοντας στην Antibes , έμαθε να περνά μπόλικο χρόνο με τον εαυτό του , να απολαμβάνει τη μοναξιά του ντύνοντάς τη με τα χρώματα της Μεσογείου. Σίγουρα εντυπωσιάστηκε πολύ όταν παρατήρησε για πρώτη φορά με τα κυάλια του στο νυχτερινό ουρανό ένα σύμπλεγμα από αστέρια τόσο φωτεινά , ώστε να δώσει το όνομά τους σε όλες τις μουσικές του αναζητήσεις. Ένας δίσκος γεμάτος συναίσθημα , εκρήξεις και εξαγνισμό στο shoegaze , όπως μας κληρονόμησαν τα 90's. Στο εναρκτήριο κομμάτι , Moonchild , μια γυναικεία φωνή αφηγείται : “. . . suddenly a voice told me, Keep on singing, little boy. Then raise your arms to the big black sky. Raise your arms as high as you can, so the whole universe will glow. “ Αμέσως μετά , παραμορφωμένο μπάσο , αγγελικές φωνές , σιγανός ρυθμός και κατάνυξη για ό,τι πρόκειται να επακολουθήσει. Από το Don't Save Us From The Flames , μία από τις πιο pop συνθέσεις του δίσκου , πάλι με ψυχεδελικά keyboards και απαλά φωνητικά στο καθαρτικό In The Cold I'm Standing , 4 λεπτά ονείρου , κατάνυξης με τα strings των synthesizer να δημιουργούν μια επική ατμόσφαιρα. Το Slight Night Shiver , με samples από ήχους αμαξιών που περνούν σε μια λεωφόρο μακριά , με ήχους σαν τριζόνια και απαλά strings στα keyboards , αποτελεί μια από τις πιο ανατριχιαστικές στιγμές του δίσκου , και μαζί με το I Guess I'm Floating τις πιο συναισθηματικά φορτισμένες συνθέσεις συνάμα , που σίγουρα θα θεωρηθόυν από τα κλασικότερα της ambient electronica των 00's. . Στο ειλικρινές Teen Angst , με τα απαλά γυναικεία φωνητικά , τις shoegaze εκρήξεις , με παραμορφώσεις στο μπάσο και στα synthesizer που δύσκολα θα μπορούσε κανείς να έχει ξανακούσει αλλού , την pop μορφή του , αποκαλύπτεται ένα από τα κορυφαία pop κομμάτια των τελευταίων χρόνων. Στο δίσκο επικρατεί κάτι το κινηματογραφικό , εικόνες τόσο έντονες που σε κάνουν να ντύνεις με ήχους τις αναμνήσεις που ξέμειναν παρατημένες.

Τα τελευταία 3 χρόνια ο Anthony Gonzalez ως M83 κυκλοφόρησε το 2005 το Digital Shades Volume1. Σαφώς πιο πειραματικό , αποδίδει φόρο τιμής στο μεγάλο μάστορα του ambient Brian Eno. Οι ήχοι είναι πιο ηλεκτρονικοί , τα κομάτια 10 στο σύνολο με τα 8 να είναι από τέσσερα λεπτά και κάτω. Κάθε σύνθεση και ένα όνειρο κάθε παραμόρφωση και μια σκέψη , με προσωπικές στιγμές εξαγνισμού στο Sister(part2) “Stay away from me , I got no memories at all. . . “ , επικές κιθαριστικές shoegaze στιγμές στο By The Kiss. Υπάρχει κάτι το ημιτελές , λες και ο Gonzalez είναι στα σπάργανα για κάτι διαφορετικό ηχητικά που περιμένει να δέσει μέσα του.

Εν έτει 2008 κυκλοφορεί το Saturdays=Youth , το οποίο είχε μια χλιαρή αντιμετώπιση από τους κριτικούς , όπως και το προηγούμενο. Εδώ , τα πράγματα έχουν κάπως αλλάξει , κρατώντας πάντα το ονειρικό shoegaze συναίσθημα. Υπάρχει μια έντονη παρουσία πιάνου και μιας 80's new wave αισθητικής στα keyboards. (Kim&Jessie , Skin Of The Night , Couleurs , We Own The Sky , Up!). Φαίνεται πως o Gonzalez αρχίζει να ξεπερνά τους εφιάλτες του και αποτολμά εν έτει 2008 να παρουσιάζει pop συνθέσεις με 80'ς synths , μπλέκοντας τη shoegaze κληρονομιά των 90's και τα σύγχρονα electro εργαλεία των 00's. Στο Graveyard Girl μας παραπέμπει στα κιθαριστικά 80'ς Ποιος ξέρει τι μας περιμένει όταν “δέσει” όλη αυτή η συνθετική ορμή?

To Σάββατο 4 Οκτωβρίου θα βρίσκεται στο Gagarin να ταξιδέψει όλους μας στα δικά μας όνειρα.

It's not customary that the same release could warrant two posts in two days from me, but to be fair, it isn't actually the same release. Now don't be fooled by the fact that Invol2ver is included in both titles, this is actually a seperate release unlike the post yesterday which was from a bonus disc with the main release.

That's a poor excuse, but I kind of set myself up for this one, saying in yesterday's post that I didn't post his rendition of, for example, Ladytron's Destroy Everything You Touch or M83's magnificent Couleurs, because they were only available in mixed form, and would as such ruin the completeness of the work a tad bit.

Enter Invol2ver - Unmixed Digital Version. Oh Sasha, you sly fox. Included on this is unmixed versions of those two tracks and three other tracks from Invol2ver. Bliss.

You know, I was in Gotenburg, Sweden for a few days in 2004 and never got the sense that they had a big important music scene or anything. Now it seems like every week there's an awesome new act from the city. Maybe it has something to do with all the government programs to help push Swedish acts abroad - Stephen Harper take note. Anyway, I still haven't been able to find the new EP by Gotenburg's Air France in Toronto, although I'm sure it's out there somewhere. The tracks I've heard remind me of M83's Before the Dawn Heals Us, but where that had a bit of a ominous, pessimistic vibe, this feels more earnest and hopeful. I know that's a bit of a simplistic explanation, but it's all I've got at the moment. whatevs... I could probably just download it, but I have a feeling I'm gonna love this record and then wish I had a physical copy, cause I'm old skool like that.

As a habitually poor sleeper, I listened to the second half of Barack Obama’s acceptance speech last night. While it was yet another worthy piece of rhetoric, I still find myself underwhelmed by a man who should represent many views that I would typically espouse.

Perhaps this is because I have always been an advocate of actions speaking louder than words. Consequently, how an Obama presidency would work out has quite an unknown quantity to it relative to that of any new U.S. President that I can remember. They, at least, had established track records as either State governors or in the role of Vice President beforehand. Therefore, for better or for worse, you had some idea of what was coming.

I say this particularly in a context where there are so many incredibly challenging issues out there right now – issues that the increasingly lame-duck current administration will now do little to address as it moves into its final phase of existence. Does the world need an inspirational leader right now in the United States or one who will get the job done?

Anyway, we shall see, we shall see. In truth, I am really waiting for Thomas Carcetti to announce his candidacy for 2012!

Okay, enough of my early morning ramblings, let us talk instead about this week’s music video.

M83 (Frenchman Anthony Gonzalez) has been around for several years now and has finally captured a bigger chunk of the listening public’s ear-time with this year’s more accessible Saturdays = Youth album. A lush and ambient sounding record, characterised by keyboards, reverb, and hushed falsetto vocals, the video below is for the third single to be released off it. It comes laced with Eighties-sounding synth and is called Kim & Jessie.
