The Crossroads Band/Crossroads

The degree of affection I have for the Crossroads Band is something that is difficult to rate. This is a group that is easy to love, writing and producing blues-tinted roots rockers that not only display prime musicianship but stellar lyricism and friendly, heartfelt vocals. This is the kind of band that you'd see at summer festivals, jamming beneath the heat of the sun for whatever the size of the crowd. Vocalist Tony Merando is almost like a chameleon, shifting tone and style depending on the genre and primary emotion of the tune. On "I'm So Glad," Merando echoes the crystalline blue-eyed soul of Paul Carrack while his group generates a sizzling Southern-rock groove that Lynyrd Skynyrd would've saluted them for.

Guitars are at the heart of the Crossroads Band. They boil to a fiery rhythm on "Free Man," starting with a gently rocking pulse that gradually increases steam. Man, this group can honestly smoke! "Stranded" is pleasantly engaging Americana in the jangly Wilco vein. Even the relatively mellow numbers like "Oh Mama" and "Time Slips Away" show a band that never sleeps at the wheel.

FUTURE ADVISE TO MY SON

Live life like a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Wait? What?

Okay there I said it. My Georgia, Eastern Kentucky blood comes to the fore front. No, I'm not growing a mullet or putting a Trans Am up on blocks. But there is something to be said about some Skynyrd. And when I say live your life like some southern rock music I mean live it simply but effective. Honest, full of love and life, moralistic, God fearing and most of all...rocking. Now that's not a bad way to live.

This thought came to me to me about 5:30 this morning. Not sure why, but the channel in my mind must have been tuned to the swamp music station. But it was instantaneous, "live life like a Lynyrd Skynyrd song." I don't know where this random crap comes from folks. I'm apparently just the messenger. So what ever the days you brings try to find a classic rock station, I'm sure Simple Man or Free Bird is playing somewhere. Maybe you'll have the same sleepless night epiphany that I had.

side note: I'm sure the true meaning of this thought will hit in the middle of the night sometime. I'll try to relay that peril of wisdom when it happens.

At the moment, I’m waiting for the phone to ring with that irresistibly sexy red head, Amber,

At the moment, I'm waiting for the phone to ring with that irresistibly sexy red head, Amber, on the other end of the line. She's supposed to call so we can get together for an early dinner before she has to go sell her time to the man , this evening. I used to prefer women with darker hair. Ranging from a light chocolate shade to completely black, but the black I like much more if it's real and not colored. Anyway, since I've been together with Amber, all the sudden, that fiery red is seeming to ignite my attractions much more.

With Amber and myself both being drawn to the overly dramatic as well as being guided by raw feelings and emotions in the romance department, our situations and circumstances seem to vacillate between a consuming passion and fiery sensuality to moments of overly excited fun and humor to some very tricky emotional situations. We tend to be great together until all of the sudden, were not. Then within a very short time, it's all back to the wild fire of desire between us and suddenly, it's only her and I, in our own sanctuary of bliss and indulgence.

I think I could have guessed that our course was going to be along those lines, from the start. Since I did pretty quickly recognize that in many ways, she was much like me. Were each sort of a male and female version of the same cast. That's probably why when we hit it off, there's nothing else that would compare. And there's nothing else quite like that gorgeous red hair.

This post was supposed to simply be a couple of videos. I think it got off track a wee bit. What a surprise I'm sure.

To the videos, two of them. Both are songs that have had recent covers of them released and to me, the originals shine so much better. First, will be Simple Minds, Don't you forget about me. Then, Lynyrd Skynyrd with Simple Man. I just noticed the two have a simple commonality, purely unintended.

I'm not sure of the band who does Don't you forget about me, but it's on a JC Penny's commercial and is a very poor attempt. Simple Man, was redone by Shinedown. Not too bad, but I think in the chorus he tries too hard and over sings for having an acoustic background.

Tonight may bring another poem or two, who knows. Anyway, here are the videos. First, Simple Minds

Now, Simple Man. Interesting video but today, my interest is in the music.

Edit: In hindsight this post is about 28732923 times swearier than pretty much anything I've written. You have been warned.

Right, the flat is clean, the laundry is done, I've finally done the washing up after leaving a pile of dirty dishes and pans sitting in my sink for the last five days, my work jacket is hanging up rather than lying on the floor in a crumpled heap (too damn right; apparently I look good in a suit, according to someone at Waitrose (as well as ZZ Top) so I want to preserve some of that suity magic for a while even if it does exist only in my own head), the shopping has been done for the week too - all part of my normal Saturday chore routine. So now, it's time to fall back on the other activity I always make time to pursue on a Saturday evening; getting shitfaced.

And why the fuck not? Yesterday was hell. For much of the day, there was just me on the counter; the region's biggest branch of HSBC, with just one trainee cashier on duty. One woman took it upon herself to bitch and moan at nobody in particular really loudly, not least about HSBC Live radio, the corporate station that exists so that people talking about their finances with staff can't be overheard. Normally, I bitch about it too; recently, they appear to have adopted a policy of playing that Kid Rock bumdrizzle every day, sometimes twice, to the point where when they played the actual song that talentless cunt had sampled, and even had the barefaced cheek to namecheck in the fucking chorus (Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama; somewhere some of that band's members are spinning in their graves, the bits of plane still embedded in them scraping the inside of their coffins as they go). This, to put it bluntly, irritates the fucking cunt off me.

But when Mrs Daily Mail Reader 2008 complained about the radio, they were playing the Rolling Stones for fuck's sake, which is one of the station's few flirtations with quality music. She'd probably heard the Stones being namechecked, remembered all the nasty things they did in their heyday and had terribly offensive, vivid images of Marianne Faithfull with items of confectionary stuck up her, which made her VERY ANGRY. I didn't care, to be frank, because they could have played anything and it'd have been better than either some middle aged snob's whinging or that fucking shitty Kid cunting Rock "song" All shitting Summer wanking Long. And, at the end of all that, when she finally got up to the counter, she was there to do a transfer, something I am simply unable to do (partially because I'm not privileged to yet, mainly because it's done with members of staff up front) so I got bitched out about that as well. Oh well; she was already primally offended by one of the Stones' tamer songs, with any luck she heard Kid Rock sing about "making love out by the lake" and "smoking funny things" on the way back and her head exploded with the sheer depravity of it all. I hope.

Then the same thing happened later. And, by the time we'd finally finished the entire backlog of work, the envelopes from the paying in machine, the cheques from the cheque paying in machine, the batches of slips to be sent off, the general clearup of confidential information and other miscellaneous rubbish, the shutting down of all our machines, it was quarter to six, so I had to wait for 35 minutes for the next bus to Chesham.

Remember my bitching about Arriva, the bus company? Remember how I didn't give any concrete examples of what a bunch of pointless fuckbuckets they are? Well, here's one. Thursday, we'd had one of the buses fuck up on the way home, so they took the bus to the depot and switched everyone onto a different one, which continued the journey. Fine, I can deal with that; it was a quick move, taking no less than 5 minutes. Full credit to the driver for that presence of mind.

Now, last night. Twenty past six, and already fucking fed up. So along trundles the bus, which takes the wrong turning and goes back to the depot with a busload of passengers. Where it sits. For FIFTEEN FUCKING MINUTES. (The award for Mrs Daily Mail Reader 2008 - Runner Up goes to the woman at the front who piped up with some bollocks about "Broken Britain" when "Fucking stupid privatised bus companies" would have been more accurate and less doom-and-gloom.) No explanation from the driver this time, and when one of the passengers asks what's going on he's basically shouted at by the driver to sit down and shut up, because the bus needs fixing. (Meanwhile, there are other perfectly servicable buses all around us which could be used to continue the journey, being as this is a bus depot). Fifteen minutes. During which time it is never adequately explained what the problem is or why it necessitates us being treated like mugs.

By the time I got home, it was about quarter past seven, and I was, to use the kindest language I can possibly use at this point, cunted right the fuck off. Arriva, you bunch of cunts, I have a simple, heartfelt request - go away. Please. Go bust so the government can take you over. Commit mass suicide. Burn down all your buildings and run screaming into the flames while wearing clothing made of Semtex and pouring petrol over yourselves. This isn't a customer service or even operational issue, this is an issue of common fucking courtesy, something you clearly lack, especially considering the fun I had trying to find your goddamn phone number, which even you don't seem to know.

Bear in mind that, despite what I said at the beginning of this post, I haven't started drinking yet; I'm perfectly sober apart from the coffee I just had. When I've finally got my whisky on, I doubt my feelings towards that bunch of fucking cretins will be able to be expressed as words, if expressed at all; the most I'll be able to get out is a string of punctuation marks, interspersed with random numbers and letters as I smash my forehead against the keyboard and, eventually, the computer itself.

Eat a dick, Arriva. Srsly.

I'm hoping that I can get this done tonight. I wanted to do another round of single reviews, since I haven't done one in about two months or so. There's a good amount of newer material waiting for me to get my opinionization on with (not a word, but I like the way it sounds), so here it goes. I'm using the Radio & Records website chart for this week, and I will take a listen to every song to its entirety (if I can stand it), and give it a fair review. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I have heard most of these songs already, since the XM Radio service in the car is gone (yes, I'm crying the blues - it is horrible without our baby) and I am now listening to normal commercial country radio. Good thing for me is that I usually listen to the alternative/independent rock station here more, so I don't have to deal with some of the problems that plague today's country radio. I'll review as far long as I can get before I have to take off. Time for critical iCF to return (my last recommendations fired me up!)...

- Wow, did not think this song would reach number one! I already reviewed it in my last post, and my opinion has changed slightly. It's still a good song and the music is still pleasant. I'm OK with the vocals... a bit overdone with the "don't thank I don't thank about it" part. Gets kinda old, but I'm happy for Mr. Rucker. I have yet to really check out his new album but from the clips I've listened to, it's good-sounding music. 3.5 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

02. "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven" - Kenny Chesney:

- Already another hit? Let me just say: George Strait does it much better (aside from the weird Jamaican accent thing he does at the end of his version...just bizarre). I personally think it's a disgrace that in years from now, Kenny Chesney will be considered a "legend" in country music history. Thanks radio! (I admit, I like a little of his music, but radio plays the heck out of whatever he releases, no matter what quality it is, so that's not really saying much). We're in the Hurricane Kenny era, and our beaches are not safe. 2.0 out of 5 stars.

03. "She Never Cried In Front of Me" - Toby Keith:

- This is a different sound for Toby, and it's not bad. Not my favorite from him, but it's a lot better than some of his other material that grew tiresome for me. The production is heavy on the drums and electric guitar in the chorus, and with the strings, but whatever. I like variety and I'm not really gonna complain here. 3.0 out of 5 stars.

04. "All Summer Long" - Kid Rock:

- Man, talk about overplayed... even on XM Radio, this song was cranked out on about every music station I listened to and I could not escape it. I gotta give it credit: it's a good song and very catchy, but all those listens, had me lunging for the next number to play anything but this. Still, I'd rather hear this tune than hear the mother of overplayed songs - and the one that he took the music from - Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" (don't get started with that song...ahh). 3.0 out of 5 stars.

05. “Do You Believe Me Now?” - Jimmy Wayne:

- I also already reviewed this one and I was stoked and happy that it reached number one some weeks ago. Now, Jimmy just needs to release his duet with Patty Loveless, "No Good for Me" (I've got no clip, unfortunately), and I'll be in heaven. 4.5 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

06. "Just a Dream" - Carrie Underwood:

- The poppy piano intro music is a great way to start off this ballad, and it sounds beautiful with the voice to go with it. She does tend to overdo it at times in the chorus, though, but it is distinguishable in her catalog. The lyrics are just as good as the vocals, and this is probably one of her best singles so far. I may not be a "fan" of her's, but I support her. 4.0 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

07. "Troubadour" - George Strait:

- This one has grown on me since last time, and I'm liking it even more. 3.5 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

08. "Waitin' On a Woman" - Brad Paisley:

- You know, I like Brad overall, and this one is also still likable, though I'm finding I'm not really into Brad as much as I used to be. My interest is fading. 3.5 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

09. "Let It Go" - Tim McGraw:

- I've read some negative reviews about this single online and I was expecting something bad, but I find it really catchy, and yeah, it's really poppy, but IMO the production and vocals are a nice pleasant mix of country and pop. 4.0 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

10. "Country Man" - Luke Bryan:

- I'm gonna stick to my review from last time. I'm really glad that it reached top 10. 3 out of 5 stars.

11. "Love Story" - Taylor Swift:

- Readers of this blog should know I am definitely not a fan of Swift's. I see her as the one of biggest representations with what's wrong with today's country radio: bad vocals, bubblegum pop, and too much teenage-girl demographic appeal. With that said, it still describes this new song, but I can't deny that it's not catchy. I certainly hope that the Swift-craze fades fast, but I know that it's not gonna happen. The wheels are already in motion to the death of country music, and she just added more momentum to the situation... Still, I'll give it a 3.0 out of 5 stars.

12. "Johnny & June" - Heidi Newfield:

- Old review still holds but my rating went up, because I was lucky to catch a listen to and see her live in Colorado when she performed at a local food fair thing we do during Labor Day weekend, and she performed well. I only heard like one song since we were just walking and passing by, but it was cool. 3.0 out of 5 stars.

13. "Roll With Me" - Montgomery Gentry:

- These days, it's usually a good idea to have Troy Gentry sing most or all of the singles for the duo, because his voice is better (and he doesn't do that annoying mic twist thing that Eddie Montgomery does when he performs). With this single, it's not terrible... it works in some parts, and others, it does not. Not really something I'd want to hear that often, though. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

14. “All I Ever Wanted” - Chuck Wicks:

- I'm still mostly enjoying this one, even with the fact that it sounds really Rascal Flatts-ish lol. 3.5 out of 5 stars. Buy here!

15. "You Look Good In My Shirt" - Keith Urban:

- (I just sound like a negative broken record, don't I? lol)....but I just don't like this song. It's so weird that, ironically, the only songs of Urban's that I own are his super pop ones, the ones that I don't really consider country at all (especially the first), and those are "Once In a Lifetime" and "I Told You So". I used to detest those but they grew on me. Weird weird world. This song really doesn't do anything for me, though. Sounds like he's trying too hard. 2.0 out of 5 stars.

16. "I'll Walk" - Bucky Covington:

- First listen: boring. I liked Bucky on Idol, but liking a personality isn't enough for me. I'll ask God that this be my first and last listen. I'm just glad it was short. 2.0 out of 5 stars.

17. "Relentless" - Jason Aldean:

- I just heard this on the way here and I think it gets better with every listen. 3.5 out of 5 stars. Buy now!

I guess I'm done now, since I have to take off. That didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked, and I noticed I seem to really not like today's country music lol (it don't impress me much). I'll try to edit some things next time I'm online, and do the tags and such. Maybe add more. I felt like most of the songs were all on the old review I did. Oh well. Catch ya later!

Above: The two original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and five other guys play "Sweet Home Alabama."

By Joel Francis

When the Temptations and Four Tops took the stage Saturday night with only one original member in each ensemble, it raised questions of truth in advertising. Can a band be billed by its legendary name if only one of its musicians is an original legend?

Few bands are as fortunate as Los Lobos and U2 to have retained the same personnel since their debut. Some bands, like Wilco, have a different lineup on nearly every album. But the reunion craze has accelerated hiring ringers to fill in for dead or uncooperative musicians.

When Journey played the Midland a few weeks ago, longtime singer Steve Perry had been replaced with Filipino Arnel Pineda, who was 8 years old when the band's first album came out. No one complained, but Pineda's job is essentially to sound like Perry while founding guitarist Neal Schon and the rest of the band deliver their signature sound.

Similarly, Yes were primed for a 40th anniversary tour when lead singer Jon Anderson fell ill. Rather than cancel the tour, the remaining members, who include Oliver Wakeman, son of original keyboardist Rick Wakeman, recruited a new singer off YouTube.

The majority of fans will tolerate a minor substitution. There were no grumbles when bass player Eric Avery sat out Jane's Addiction's second go-round. Most fans will recognize that age and time will prevent everyone from taking part. But when the skeleton of the original crew drag new faces out under the old name, it starts to take advantage of the people who kept the hunger for a reunion alive.

There's also a slight double-standard in play. Few Beatles fans would be satisfied with a Beatles "reunion" featuring Paul, Ringo, Julian Lennon and Dhani Harrison, but The Who have completed not one but two successful (read: lucrative) tours minus the late John Entwistle and Keith Moon. Of course a true Fab Four reunion never happened, while The Who have launched a handful of "farewell" tours, but the rhythm section of Moon and Entwistle defined The Who's sound just as much as John and George did for the Beatles.

Swapping drummers and bass players is one thing, but the road to finding a new frontman is fraught with peril. INXS failed miserably in their reality TV quest to carry on after the premature death of Michael Hutchinson. However, 14 years after Freddy Mercury died, Queen - minus drummer John Taylor - reconvened with former Free and Bad Company vocalist Paul Rogers. Many of the band's East Coast concert date sold out quickly.

When Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger hired Cult singer Ian Astbury to hit the road as The Doors they were faced with a lawsuit from drummer John Densmore and forced to tour as Riders on the Storm. The moniker didn't alter any setlists, but it at least let the fans know they weren't getting the same guys that worked together in the ‘60s.

Then there are the jazz orchestras that continue to tour despite the death of their bandleader. The Count Basie and Glenn Miller orchestras draw decent crowds when they visit the area, despite Miller's disappearance during World War II and Bill Basie's death a mere 25 years ago. The Gem Theater will host a Jazz Messengers reunion concert on October even though bandleader Art Blakey died in 1990.

The reason why a musician will resurrect his old band with ringers is obvious: Billy Corgan will sell a lot more tickets and albums as the Smashing Pumpkins than he would alone. And while there's no clear-cut solution, I think this is a rare example of capitalism and artistry joining forces to provide the ultimate answer.

If a band's catalog is strong enough, fans won't mind shelling out $30 to $50 as they did Saturday night at Starlight to hear someone else sing "My Girl" and "Baby I Need Your Loving." On the other hand, if bands plug on minus crucial components, they might be confined to the state fair/town festival circuit Three Dog Night and the Guess Who have been riding for years.

Lezers,

3vandaag ziet hierin natuurlijk marktpotentieel.

Hole mole, I’ve been hiatused. There’s the garden variety laziness that can be blamed.

Hole mole, I've been hiatused. There's the garden variety laziness that can be blamed. And I have other priorities, I guess. But blog-wise, I'm also confronted by the twin challenges of satisfyingly bringing my biking adventure to a close and saying something...anything...about that Lynard Skynard greatest hits album I was for sure I had to own. And so weeks have passed and nary a word (ug...that just came out...I'll punish myself by leaving that horrifyingly hackneyed phrase). But I've taken to making headbands part of my casualwear. And a headband does something for one's work ethic.

First, on biking to work...guess what? It's not that tough and I haven't really stopped. I'm not doing 75 miles a week anymore. But I'm definitely getting over 50. Take that, carbon footprint. It's more like a carbon kitten paw print. Aw...my adorable minimized share of environmental damage. And about Skynard...

Lynyrd Skynyrd - All-Time Greatest HitsNo idea what I was thinking when I got this one. I think the onset of fall has me thinking back to the gaps in my catalogue. But I don't know why I should fixate on Skynard. I've always sided with the Canadian in the great Neil Young-Skynard debate. But "Sweet Home Alabama" doesn't make this collection, not that I need to have it. But still "Simple Man" kind of bothers me, in my infinite complexity. "Curtis Lowe" is stupid. Nothing really surprises me here. I just hear beer bellies on this album. Rows and rows of swaying, dirty beer bellies.

CocoRosie - The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn This is more like it. Still, an older album but only by a year. They're like a rapping Joanna Newsom. So unapologetically weird. Take that Skynard! You do a werewolf rap song, Ronnie Van Zant. The southern man definitely does not need these sisters around anyhow. A vast improvement from the last album. Which I liked, but threw my hands up afterwhile. I could be going back to this one a few more times.

Inara George - An Invitation It's so classy. I feel like I should be wearing a vest when spinning this. The Bird and the Bee lady does a nice Sunday morning album. And the arrangements sound so ridiculously complicated that I feel I have no qualifications to say anything about them other than "good job".

I've finally closed out August. That wasn't too bad. September will be a doozy, however. I'll need to wear 2 headbands.

The Glamsters are the ultimate 70's Glam Rock tribute band, unlike many
tribute acts, they encompass the whole genre of the 70's Glam Rock era,
rather than concentrating on replicating a single act. Each member
models themselves on original icons of the Glam era. Rufus is the
ultimate 'rock god' front man, Jonny - a legend of The Glitterband,
Pussie - KISS kitten, Jimmy - the SWEET sensation, and Donny - 'sex on
legs' glam guitar hero. The Glamsters have been constantly working
since 1996, concentrating on Corporate Events as well asprivate
parties, festivals and good old pub gigs. When asked Rufus often says
'we've never had a bad gig, people always remember the 70's and the
great times they had, we just take them back to those fun times. We are
the spirit of the 70's'

The Rik Martin Band is based in Surrey
& has been regularly gigging around south London since being
put together in sept 05. The band was formed after a meeting with a
good lookin' drummer girl by the name of Helen Watt (now Helen Martin)
at Robin Bibi's blues jam at the Grey Horse, Kingston on Thames. Bass
duties are now taken care of by none other than "BIG" Barry Pethers of
Trafficker fame. We have also recently had the pleasure of occasionally
expanding the band with the talents of Plateman's Ross Ewart. Ross is
without doubt one of the most talented guitarists I have heard
& had the priveledge to play music with, watch out!

Queen with Paul Rodgers has put out a new single “C-lebrity” for their upcoming CD “Cosmo Rocks” which is due out on Rocktober 28. Take a listen and you will like it. Rodgers still has the chords and Brian May can still rock out. This is their first studio album and it is dedicated to Freddie Mercury. Check it out, sounds like something the original Queen would do and who doesn’t like Paul Rodgers?

Yes has decided to go on with their 40th reunion tour without Jon Anderson- he had acute respitory failure in June and was ordered by doctors to rest for 6 months. So who is the new singer? Mr. Benoit David, who sings with a few Yes tribute bands in Montreal. He was uncovered the same way that the members of Journey found Arnel Pineda- a You Tube video showing him singing Yes songs. Signed him immediately and will now tour. Man this You Tube is making dreams come true.

Kayne West was arrested yesterday at LAX airport for smashing a paparazzo’s camera.

Beyonce’s third solo album will be released Nov. 18. No title as of yet- Justin Timberlake makes an appearance.

Heart was furious with the Republican Party for using their monster hit “Barracuda” every time Sarah Palin was introduced at the RNC. Palin’s nickname is the same name as their song. Heart has ordered an immediate ban of the song for Palin.

I have a few favorite classics songs of the week for you today and in no particular order:“Anyone Who Had a Heart” by Dusty Springfield -now I know most people know the Dionne Warwick version but for me it’s Dusty. She captivates my attention on every song she has ever done. She’s worked her way to my top 5 female performers of all time. “Beautiful” comes to mind whenever I hear her name. How about “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie. Man do I love the bridge- “All across the nation, such a strange vibration…” Great song. And how about the unforgettable “I’ve Got to Be Me” by Sammy Davis Jr.? I love the beginning“Whether I’m right or whether I’m wrong. Whether I find a place in this world or never belong…” Listen to the man’s passion on this song!! This song will live on for eternity!!! How about “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard it Should Be” by Carly Simon? I betcha you forgot about that song. Go back and listen to how special a song it is. The last song that you need to own in your music library is “Release Me” by Engelbert Humperdinck. Listen to the arrangement on this song and tell me it doesn’t sound like it was recorded last week. You know that saying “they just don’t make songs like that anymore.”- This song falls into that category for me. I can’t say enough about this song- I’ve listened to it over and over the last few weeks. By the way you can’t go wrong with his greatest hits on 20th Century Masters, every song on that album I grew up listening to and know every one.

My favorite new song of the week is “Call Me” by Shinedown. Now I know you’re probably sick of me writing about this band but I can’t stop. I thought they were good on the Jay Leno show last Friday night- my wife was not so impressed- hey what can I say. I can’t get enough of this band. Without a doubt, they have the number one album of 2008!!!

Former Ratt frontman, Stephen Pearcy, has a new album out- his first in three years and it’s called Under My Skin. Sounds pretty good on the 30 second I-Tune sampling. Check it out!

On Sept. 29, VH1 Classic will show “Rush Hashanah.” Supposedly it is a 24-hour tribute and will have “Rush in Rio” and R30 concerts as well as videos.

Did you happen to catch the Fashion Rocks show on CBS this past Tuesday night? What an enjoyable show from start to finish. Now for people who know me- for me to stay awake from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.- you know the show had to be good. What I loved about the show was the way they paid tribute to the great artists of the past. Isn’t this what I have been preaching here for sometime now? Take Beyonce’s tribute to the legendary Etta James with a spectacular-spot on- version of “At Last.” Are you kidding me? - blew me away. Or how about Chris Brown taking on Sam Cooke’s “Cupid?” Chris Brown who is all of 19 years old? I would have liked it if he did the whole song but hey you can’t always get what you want. You all know how I feel about Sam Cooke. Ranks up in the top 5 singers of all-time, period end of story!! What about Fergie? Is it me or is she everywhere? Her performance of “Call Me” by Blondie was so energetic; I wanted to get up on stage and dance around. Debby Harry still looks good and her voice sounded great. Fergie was also part of the best performance of the night when she came out with the Black Eyed Peas to do an awesome version of the Rolling Stone’s “Miss You.” Dare I say it was better than the original?

OK who is living larger than Kid Rock? This guy has the life!!! Did you see him out there with Mary J. Blige singing the classic “I’m Losing You” by the Temptations? And then he comes back out again to do his “All Summer Long” hit which then morphs into “Sweet Home Alabama” with the current members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Talk about being out of place as far as “fashion.” Now I love Skynyrd but they stuck out like a sore thumb with their “stuck in 1976” look. But that’s what is so great about Kid Rock- he puts them back on the map again.

Really can’t say the same thing about the MTV music awards show (VMA or whatever). I remember when I use to so look forward to that show. I listened to five minutes of the host, Russell Brand, and I was out. He was terrible and the show is too boring. It’s not about the music anymore, it’s about who “is all that.” Stupid comes to mind. What has happened to MTV? They use to be so cool.

In honor of today being National “Metallica” Day-as their new album “Death Magnetic” is released- I thought it was apropos to review my favorite album by the boys from California. “…And Justice For All”-which was released back in 1988.And no it is not because “One” is on this album. Not saying I don’t love the song but it’s something that is sometimes over-played, especially at their shows. (Lars- there are other songs on this album that you can perform live). Now for those of you who know me a long time, you know that I became a Metallica fan after the “Black Album” was released in 1991. So if that destroys the “street cred” - then so be it. But like I’ve said all along on this site- discovery of music- whether new or old- is what it is all about. After loving the Black Album, I went back and now own their entire catalog of music. I was also a Met club member for about 8-years, I didn’t renew the subscription a few years back. So that being said, back to And Justice For All.The one thing I will always remember about this album was that when my wife was pregnant with our first son-she had gone out for a few hours- and I had to prepare the room for our new arrival- and I played this album two times in its entirety while painting the room. Talk about head banging with a rolling paintbrush!!!

The album starts off with the blistering “Blackened”- though it starts off low and you’re thinking, “This is Metallica?” Then 35 seconds in- the ride begins- instant head banging as the classic Hetfield and Ulrich combination sends you into a frenzy. This album is full of so many changes in tempo and this song is no different. I love the part where Hetfield sings out “Opposition.. Contradiction..Premonition..Comprise…” Kirk Hammett’s solos fit in perfect. Then it’s on to the title track- an epic piece that has a long intro into a heavy jam and an even longer intro. Just listen to how tight they are in this song? There are lightning rhythmic changes throughout as well as gripping “slow-downs.” Kirk’s solo half way through the song kicks butt. If you can handle this song- it’s a perfect work out song- find a heavy boxing bag and punch away. Track # 3 is “Eye of the Beholder” and a perfect song to see them live. Just picture 18,000 plus banging their heads in unison. “Doesn’t Matter What You See Or into it What You Read…” screams Hetfield as my ears are screaming for relief as the volume is out of control right now. This could be the best and my favorite song of the album. Side one ends with the aforementioned classic “One.” This song is their “Stairway to Heaven” and is a staple at their shows. If you have not heard it in a while and go back to listen to it- you’ll be reminded why it receives so many accolades from almost every heavy/hard rock musician on the planet. Of course when it speeds up, my head and face shake from side to side as fast as I can do it and I scream along with James- “Darkness…Imprisoning Me.. All that I See.. Absolute Horror…” Whew my head hurts and I haven’t even put on side 2 yet!!!

Side Two starts off with “The Shortest Straw” and this is also one of my favorites of the album. Hetfield’s guitar work on this bad boy just keeps it rolling and Lars is flat out on fire!!! I love the chorus “Shortest Straw..Challenge Liberty.. Downed by Law.. Live in Infamy..” There is a lot of double bass drumming on this song and it makes it sound that much heavier.“Harvester of Sorrow”- Oh I just changed my mind- this is my favorite song on the album. (You see how hard it is picking a favorite). My walls are shaking right now and I’m back painting the walls of my son’s room back in Ringwood. This is the first album recorded with Jason Newsted on bass, after the untimely death of Cliff Burton back on Sept. 27, 1986 and his bass work stands out on this track. This song rocks with a slower pace of head banging and it is the ultimate air-guitar song!!! Then it’s on to the Wizard of Oz as the beginning of “The Frayed Ends of Sanity” uses the “Oh wee Oh” verse to kick off a speed metal song that will have you trying to catch your breath. The solo from Kirk just may be his best on this song. “To Live is to Die” is their majestic masterpiece. ‘Nuff said. Just listen and learn why they are so revered. Nine and a half minutes of pure genius. The album ends with the shortest song – “Dyers Eve”- but don’t kid yourself- sometimes it’s the shortest ones that packs the biggest punch and in this case the song is “controlled chaos.” This song is all over the place and yet it sounds the tightest on the album. Again Kirk’s solo is lights out. As the album comes to a crashing end, it enforces my theory that this is their best work. There are long periods of instrumental genius throughout this album and their passion bleeds through the speakers on every song. I will equate it to AC/DC when they did “Back in Black”- they were doing it as a tribute to their “brother”-Bon Scott- who had passed away unexpectedly. Same here- this album is a tribute to Burton- so you know they put all of their heart and soul into it.

Now I know the earlier Metallica is not for everyone and especially this album because this is thrash metal at its best. It’s an acquired taste but give it a chance, don’t just write it off- open your mind to “heavy.” I think we all need it (“heavy”) at certain times-not all the time- but you know what I’m talking about. So in honor of “Death Magnetic” which has been compared to “And Justice for All” I salute Metallica and you all should do your part today by blasting a tune from the boys-whether it be in your car, your house or your headphones!!! Rock on my friend’s…\m/ \m/

Back on this day in 2003, the world lost a music icon- Mr. Johnny Cash died at the age of 71.

Back on this day in 1966, The Monkees TV show premiered on NBC.

Today is the birthdate of Mr. Barry White, had he still be with us, he would have been 64.

Do Sertanejo ao Metal Hard Rock
Hudson Cadorini lança CD solo e semi-instrumental totalmente desvirtuado do ritmo caipira

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="310" caption="Foto: Revista Rolling Stone"][/caption]

This is a night at the bar. Working the door is a dude who is being a jerk because he’s work

This is a night at the bar. Working the door is a dude who is being a jerk because he's working the door and I'm not. He is 'that guy.' You know 'that guy.' This is a night at the bar, and this bar was made for 'that guy.'

What is it about an unappealing atmosphere that I find so unappealing? I paid three dollars to be here. The three dollars covers the cost of the DJ. They charge covers when there is a local artist, on Karaoke Night and, it seems, whenever owner thinks there might be a good turnout. I think someone gave him some bad information, because the place is practically empty. There is a decent stage here, and in the middle of this decent stage is a laptop on a table. The laptop is plugged into a cheap PA system and there is no DJ in sight.

'What did I just pay three dollars for?' I ask the bartender.

He frowns. I'd be embarrassed too. He's apologetic and I order a beer. He's quitting smoking, so I recommend the patch. I look around. Apparently, I am the only person drinking here who doesn't also work here. Half the employees are off tonight, and they are all getting drunk, and I know they didn't pay cover. I nudge the blonde one and ask her what's up with the laptop.

'It's DJ Dirty Dan,' she assures me, and then she does a shot of Liquid Marijuana.

'Who?' I ask.

She points across the bar. It's 'DJ Dirty Dan.' He's doing a shot of Liquid Marijuana.

Two songs by Dave Matthews play in a row and I'm wishing I had ordered my beer to go. Never been a big fan of Dave. Next on 'DJ Dirty Dan's Superstar Megamix' is a little childhood anthem called 'Whoop! There It Is.' I don't know if that's the actual title of the song or what--in fact, I don't even know who performs 'Whoop! There It Is,' and I don't care. I should be writing down the set list on cocktail napkins, but I'm too busy writing letters of complaint, and I'm trying as hard as I can to make my letters of complaint sound more like letters of complaint and less like death threats. I'm sure there was a Jack Johnson song. 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'The Thong Song.' Themes from television shows.

I order another beer. I mean, that's what I'm here for, not Sisqo, Coolio or Bon Jovi, and I'm not going to let any of them ruin my night. That's when Aerosmith comes on. By this time 'That Guy' is replaced by another, smaller guy, and 'That Guy' saddles up at the bar a few stools down from me. The song is 'I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing' from the motion picture Armageddon. Hit me with a bloody asteroid already. 'That Guy' knows every word. I don't know him, but somehow I'm sure that 'That Guy' has a really hot friend who plays Rock Band with him who calls him 'Bear' who tells him he's an amazing singer. But Bear's hot friend doesn't have to suffer tonight; she doesn't have to listen to his sad Steven Tyler.

It's close to the end, and I think Liv Tyler is putting her hand on the NASA monitor waving good bye to Bruce Willis or that nice young man from Good Will Hunting. The only thing I can remember from the movie at this point is Steve Buscemi and the mini-gun. I'm not a violent person. 'That Guy' is a little red in the face as he gives it everything he's got for the big finish, and the song is over. Silence. 'That Guy' takes a shot of Liquid Marijuana.

The silence is interrupted. This is a familiar tune. Orchestral. And, suddenly, it hits me. We're listening to the same song. 'DJ Dirty Dan' must have gone to the little boys room. We're stuck in power ballad hell. I slap my nicotine patch, give a Charlie Brown 'ARGH!' and I ask for my tab. 'That Guy' starts singing again. The bartender takes my money and gives me my change and I give him a good tip (always tip your bartender well, especially when there's bad music--remember, he/she can't leave). Obviously, I came out on the wrong night.

The music killed everything, not the three dollar cover. I'd pay a ten dollar cover as long as I didn't have to listen to that noise. And I'm not even going to blame the music itself, any one of those songs would have been fine if it was played in the middle of a substantial and recent playlist of dance and hip hop songs. 'DJ Dirty Dan' was playing a list of songs that people remember from middle school pizza parties. I want to call them 'novelty songs,' because they make people say things like, 'Oh my god! This used to be that song!' and 'I haven't heard this song since nineteen-ninety three.' This is the music that frat guys think other people like to listen to. These are the songs that make up the majority of their 'Party Mix' and 'Road Trip Jammin' CDs, and they play these CDs in their Jeeps when they're buying beer for freshman girls.

Look, I've got nothing against frat guys or freshman girls, but I'm also not trying to get laid by frat guys or freshman girls; so why should I have to stomach the pathetic alt-rock plumage that serves as a dry humping soundtrack for males of the species who have less taste in music than a garden hose? I shouldn't. I guess what I'm saying is this: A DJ should be a real DJ if you're paying him. However, to the owner of the bar: Don't bother changing for my sake, because I won't be coming back.

Too bad for the bartender, quitting smoking will be a lot harder in his shoes. He was cool. Before i left, he gave me a shot of Liquid Marijuana on the house.

From cmt.com: Born Hugh Edward Thomasson Jr., Hughie Thomasson joined a fledging Tampa-area bar band named the Outlaws in the late '60s. With David Dix on drums, Thomasson quickly made a name for himself as a no-nonsense guitar master. The group disbanded, but Thomasson reformed the Outlaws in 1972 with guitarist Henry Paul, drummer Monte Yoho and bassist Frank O'Keefe. (Paul later enjoyed a successful country career as a member of BlackHawk.) Guitarist Billy Jones joined in 1973. Known as the Florida Guitar Army for their triple-lead guitar attack, the Outlaws were the first group signed by former Columbia Records head Clive Davis when he formed Arista Records. He flew to Columbus, Ga., in 1974 to see the Outlaws perform with Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Columbus Civic Center and went to the Ramada Inn after the show and made an offer. Their 1975 debut album, The Outlaws, quickly sold gold, and they were signed as the opening act on the Doobie Brothers' Stampede tour. The band went on to record 13 albums in all, with such hits as "Green Grass and High Tides" and "Hurry Sundown," both of which Thomasson wrote. His signature Fender Stratocaster guitar sound and vocals came to define the group. The Outlaws disbanded in the mid-'90s when Thomasson joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. He added his distinctive guitar sound to Skynyrd's robust lineup and co-wrote many of the band's later songs. In 2005, Thomasson left Skynyrd and reformed the Outlaws with drummers Yoho and Dix, bassist Randy Threet and guitarist Chris Anderson.

There’s been an increase in quotes that go something like this… “I hate all new mu

There's been an increase in quotes that go something like this... "I hate all new music, it all sounds the same" Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour) was quoted as saying he doesn't buy new music because he doesn't think any of it is good. Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd) said something similar back in the 90's about how you couldn't tell what artist you were listening to on the radio anymore.

My answer to that is - What do you expect?? There are only 12 notes, total. I dare somebody to invent the 'H' note.

So, I do agree with the thought that there isn't much variety or originality in today's music. Back in the 70's you knew you were listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, etc. Where as today, you can get confused with bands like Evan's Blue, Hurt, Sick Puppies, Red, and Three Days Grace - not that I'm dissing these bands. These are 10 artists that get radio play that still manage to stand out in today's radio. (I stuck with 'active rock' bands who's bulk of music came in the 2000's, and this isn't about how 'good' the band is, so don't start thowing stuff at me)

10. Breaking Benjamin - For the most part, their guitars and guitar tones sound just like anything else in their genre. The drums are nothing new. Plug in any singer and you'll have any band. But, Benjamin himself has a voice that is pretty unique...you know its Breaking Benjamin when he starts singing. His voice defines the band just as much as his name.

9. Blue October - Add really meaningful lyrics to alternative rock with a violin. Justin is also a really good singer and frontman. If his voice, the violin playing, or catchy guitar parts don't grab you, then the emotional lyrics definitly will.

8. System of a Down - Even though they are on hiatus and have different projects. You still listen to Serj Tankian and Scars on Broadway and think 'System'. Their voices and styles are just too recognizable to be thought of exclusively.

7. Korn - I haven't liked Korn since Head walked out on them to find religion. Even though Korn has influence many bands to try to copycat their "nu-metal" sound, no one has come close until Head started releasing his own material. The sound that really makes KoRn unique is their bass, and that "rattle" that is in every one of their songs.

6. Sevendust - This band is hit or miss with me for the most part, I have to be in the mood to listen to them. Regardless, Lajon Witherspoon's vocals are unlike anybody else on the radio.

5. Mudvayne - "Math Metal" - no body else on the radio does it like these guys. There aren't many bass players that can keep up with Ryan Martinie. While Chad Gray does his share of screaming, it's his melodic vocals that are really different.

4. Disturbed - Dan Donegan's guitarwork definitly has a unique tone. You know it's Disturbed even before David Draimen's vocals come in, and those are unique on their own.

3. Skindred - Well, simply put...who else does reggae-metal?

2. Avenged Sevenfold - I think this is what Guns-n-Roses would sound like if they wore more black and eyeliner. Well, add The Rev's speedy drumming too. M Shadow's vocals are unlike anything else in radio-metal.

1. Nickelback - Suprised? You shouldn't be. They rule the radio. They found the formula that works, there's no reason to change that. Record labels seem to try to make everyone more like Nickelback too. Daughtry, sounds like Nickelback. Puddle of Mudd, sounds like Nickelback. Hinder, sounds like Nickelback. Get the idea? While there are tons of bands that compare to Nickelback, none of them have Chad Kroeger. No one else compares. His voice sells. Any song they release = instant hit. Hell, Kroeger even helps Santana sell records.
