An Interview with Panda Transport by Jeffrey Pillow

You may have never heard of the electronica/trip-hop happy Panda Transport but you’re about to. The band is an eclectic mixture one-half Charlottesville, the other half Lyon, France. And they are coming to Lynchburg this Friday to promote their new album, Plush Mechanique. Today I researched the lives of raccoons, members of the Procyonidae family, whilst I interviewed a band of pandas, Kathy Compton and Thierry Holweck.

Jeffrey Pillow: Kathy, I see Panda Transport did a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” and fetched itself a Top 5 hit on the French radio station, FranceInter. Give me two reasons PT’s version of Joy Division’s hit song from 1980 is better than say, New Order’s or The Cure’s. Why not Captain & Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together” for a cover? You could totally bring back the yacht hat.

Kathy Compton: I love the Captain and Tennille and would love to do a cover of “Love Will Keep Us Together” sometime, so I would not want to pin one song against the other. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was a controversial song to interpret, especially for release in Europe because of its rarefied status. But we pandas like to ignore that sort of thing and prefer taking chances and making music that is a challenge and brings us joy to create. So 1) It was an obvious test of cleverness and relying on our unique perception to see if we could pull it off, which according to radio, we did; and 2) It was our first proper recording and we are a little sentimental in regards to it; and as a bonus, 3) It kind of rocks in a subversive sort of way.

JP: Your band will be in Lynchburg on Friday, July 25 to perform at the Starlight Café (P.S. music junkies, MapQuest 512 5^th St.). There is a Kroger on 2840 Langhorne Rd. You walk in. The smell of fresh produce overtakes you. The sweet aroma carries you over to where the husk still embraces each individual piece of corn. Instead of the overly used words that almost every music critic out there would choose to describe a band’s style of music, give me three vegetables and two fruits (remember tomatoes are fruit because they have seeds and don’t even get me started on cucumbers or squash) that would rightfully describe your music.

Thierry Holweck: Lemon, pepper, tomatoes, garlic, and…

KC: Pomegranate because it goes well with champagne, white peach because they taste great with red wine, and freshly cracked pepper. Portobello mushrooms because they are très bon marinated in bourbon, baby onions cooked in cream sherry and French cut green beans. Obvious, non? All from our upcoming “Cooking with Liquor” cookbook because next to music, our second favourite thing is to be switchin’ in the kitchen.

JP: I read that your drummer is an iPod. Is the American economy really that bad? Thierry Holweck, Panda Transport’s man behind the synth, could have brought you some of those Euros over from France, could he have not? If not, could he bring me a handful? The Europeans can buy over 30% more stuff than we can now. What gives? Why the iPod? Why not a drummer working in construction? I know several.

TH: (Because our iPod) always smiles, never drinks our cocktails, [is] always on time, and doesn’t smell bad after the show. We don’t need to build a house and would prefer someone working in deconstruction.

KC: Buying airfare across the Atlantic is more expensive everyday, so we are saving our money for the future Panda Transport Concorde, ergo the iPod. It is our desire to have a drummer in the future. We play with one in Europe sometimes. One of the Pantrans’ trademarks is “All things tiny,” tiny lo-fi sounds, tiny compact cars to travel in. And I agree with Thierry here, deconstruction is key with our music. Often our songs will go through numerous transformations, building and destroying over and over before a track is complete.

JP: Why should the youngens of Lynchburg, VA check out Panda Transport’s show on July 25? What are three songs that’ll blow their mind? Do they need to bring their Merriam-Webster dictionnaire français-anglais along for the ride?

TH: Instruments, listen to cool and original melodies, etc.

KC: 1) “Cosy,” a fun song about a jolly man eager to end his life using a vocoder and a stellar guitar riff; 2) “Faith,” an acoustic version for this Friday’s show at the Starlight Café, our first time performing acoustically. We’re excited to christen it in this form; and 3) “Drunk in Space,” an unreleased song recently finished and sung in Spanish, English, and French. And bossa nova to boot.

JP: Echo and the Bunnymen or The Damned?

TH: “Neat Neat Neat” by The Damned and “Killing Moon” by Echo and the Bunnymen. [I’ve] seen them both on stage and have both bands entire collection of albums!

KC: My first CD was by The Damned. But it’s hard to choose between the two. I always thought Echo and the Bunnymen a ripping name for a band.

I was iTuning this morning and I don't know why I have never owned any Fall Out Boy, so there I was click click clicking and I came across Love Will Tear Us Apart. What? That's Joy Division. That's m*therf*cking Joy Division, you can't do that! That's like taking Love Song by The Cure and putting a reggae beat to it... oh, wait that nightmare did happen... anyhow. I was curious, so I listened. Now, I have a hard time really really liking covers of my favorite bands of all time. But this one?... it's respectable, and a little odd and out of place that they would chose such a "soundtrack to my life" song. I mean this one's a classic and if you don't know it, know it:

Of course after YouTubing it I discovered that tons of people, good and bad, have indeed covered it. Holy crap, even Arcade Fire and U2 get a go at it, albeit a rousing and crowd pleasing version, without the pain and angst behind even the one that Fall Out Boy seems to still capture. I mean that's balls... to take on an anthem, alone with only a guitar, kudos:

En estos momentos debería estar reseñando “The Savages”, sin embargo no puedo evitar la tentación de seguir paladeando un poco más la voz grave de Ian Curtis.

Si algun@ se dejó seducir (como para no dejarse) por la arrolladora y brillante “24 Hour Party People” (2002) del ecléctico Michael Winterbottom, estoy segura de que “Control” (2007) no les decepcionará.

Winterbottom nos regalaba un magnífico paseo de la mano de Tony Wilson, fundador de la Factory Records, por la historia de la música de los años 70 a los 90 y en ese camino descubríamos los primeros pinitos de los Joy Division: el innovador grupo nacido tras el punk que únicamente publicó dos discos a causa de la prematura muerte de su líder y cantante Ian Curtis.

“Control” se centra precisamente en una parte de la vida de Curtis cuyo trágico suicidio también aparecía relatado en “24 Hour Party People”. Sin embargo, el tono utilizado en ambas películas es diametralmente opuesto: la desenfrenada y cachonda fiesta continua que destilaba la cinta de Winterbottom se torna en algo oscuro y triste en el film dirigido por Anton Corbijn.

La película se inicia presentándonos a un adolescente Ian Curtis al que no le interesan los estudios y que se decanta por otras inquietudes y así, en su habitación observamos discos de David Bowie, un póster de Lou Reed o un cartel alusivo a Jim Morrison y descubrimos algunas de sus lecturas entre las que cabe destacar “Crash” de J.G. Ballard (algún día debería escribir sobre el gran David Cronenberg) o “El almuerzo desnudo” de William Burroughs (ídem). Introspectivo y amante de la poesía, Ian fue el típico “creep” que plasmaba su mundo interior a través de la escritura y que “se hizo mayor” demasiado deprisa.

Tras casarse con Debbie cuando tan sólo contaba con 19 años y siendo padre de Natalie a los 22, Ian compaginó en un principio su rutinario trabajo en una oficina de empleo con los primeros pasos de esa banda que tomó su nombre de uno de los burdeles que los soldados alemanes frecuentaban durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Inmersos en la vorágine de conciertos que les darían a conocer, Curtis sufrió su primer ataque epiléptico. Atiborrado a pastillas que le sumían en un estado de somnolencia y apatía, el cantante dejó su medicación por lo que sus ataques se convirtieron en algo demasiado frecuente que, incluso, llegaban a producirse en medio de una actuación. Sus fans solían no darse cuenta de este hecho, ya que estaban acostumbrados a sus habituales movimientos espasmódicos cuando bailaba sobre el escenario.

Casado con una mujer a la que ya no amaba pero de la que no quería divorciarse, padre de una niña a la que apenas veía, enamorado de una joven belga a la que no podía abandonar, aplastado por la incontrolable epilepsia, sumido en un bache económico, asustado ante los primeros éxitos y con una gira por Estados Unidos en ciernes, Ian no resistió la presión y se ahorcó en la cocina de su casa el 18 de mayo de 1980 (el chiste fácil sobre la horrible “Stroszek” de Herzog, me lo ahorro). Tenía 23 años.

Anton Corbijn (fotógrafo de grupos como los propios Joy Division y director de vídeos musicales como “Personal Jesus” de los Depeche Mode) dirige esta película basándose en “Touching From a Distance”, la obra que escribió la viuda del cantante Deborah (Debbie) Curtis.

Rodada en un opaco y maravilloso blanco y negro, “Control” nos muestra el tormento vivido por Curtis y asistimos, así, a su progresivo deterioro en todos los sentidos. Siempre con un cigarrillo entre los dedos, con la pena pintaba en el rostro o deambulando con su petate por las grises calles de Macclesfield, Ian demuestra en cada gesto que su apego a la vida pende de un hilo.

A excepción de Samantha Morton (a la que hemos podido ver en “Acordes y desacuerdos" (1999) de Woody Allen, “Minority Report”(2002) de Steven Spielberg, “En América” (2002) de Jim Sheridan, la soporífera “Morvern Callar” (2002) de Lynne Ramsay, “Código 46” (2003) de Michael Winterbottom o “El libertino” (2004) de Laurence Dunmore) que encarna a Debbie, el resto son actores prácticamente desconocidos. Los intérpretes que dan vida a los componentes de Joy Division también reinterpretan las canciones del desaparecido grupo, único punto negativo de esta excelente película puesto que nos escamotean la peculiar voz del verdadero Curtis, aunque debo reconocer el destacable trabajo de Sam Riley.

Dotada (como no podía ser menos) de una espectacular banda sonora en la que encontramos cortes de David Bowie, Sex Pistols, Kraftwerk, Iggy Pop, The Buzzcocks, The Killers, The Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, New Order (la banda formada tras la muerte de Curtis) y, por supuesto, pequeñas joyas de los Joy Division como “Transmission”, “Dead Souls”, “Atmosphere” o la conocidísima y reversionada “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, “Control” recibió el Premio de la Juventud y el Label Europa Cinema en el Festival de Cannes de 2007.

A very disturbing story has emerged from the UK that the headstone of the late frontman of the postpunk band Joy Division, Ian Curtis (pictured above), has been stolen from Macclesfield Cemetery. The headstone was discovered to be missing on July 1st.

Curtis' family decided to make news of the headstone theft public in the hopes that it will be returned.

Peter Hook, bassist for Joy Division and New Order, told XFM London:

"I must that admit that in my life I've been to Ian's stone a lot. It's somewhere, especially with the effect it had on me after what we did, it's somewhere that I go for a moment of quiet reflection just to give the guy a nod."

Inspector Gareth Woods, of the Macclesfield Neighbourhood Policing Unit, told BBC 6 Music:

"This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the Memorial Stone is at present."

The headstone is inscribed with the words, "Love Will Tear Us Apart," which is the title of Joy Division's most successful single.

The legacy of Ian Curtis has been revisited recently because of Anton's Corbijn's feature-film biopic about Curtis, Control, which was released last year as well as a self-titled documentary about Joy Division that recently opened in America.

Curtis hanged himself on May 18, 1980 at the age of 23 in his Macclesfield home. Joy Division were due to leave the following day for their first American tour.

The brief, ill fated life of Ian Curtis is a tale of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll but a far cry from the hedonistic excess we associate with this lifestyle option.

The sex is either of a joyless marital or guilty extra-marital variety.

The drugs are on prescription to contain Curtis' epilepsy with a shopping list of debilitating side effects.

The 'rock'n'roll' is bleak and doom laden.

Curtis was supposed to have been something of a prankster but he is no practical joker in Anton Corbijn's biopic. Sam Riley accurately captures Curtis' manic mannerisms on stage and gawky awkwardness of a sullen young man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Samantha Morton who was brilliant as Morvern Callar is equally amazing here as Curtis' wife - managing to look dowdy while still eliciting our sympathy for what she had to endure. Only Craig Parkinson's overly foppish depiction of Tony Wilson looks out of place.

With videos and concert clips now available at the click of a mouse it's easy to forget how many of the key punk and post-punk bands between 1976-1980 had to be seen live or caught on short lived 'alternative' TV shows. I recall that when I first heard Joy Division on the John Peel show, Curtis was already dead. I remember that aside from the music mag photos my only visual image of them was seeing grainy shots of them performing Shadowplay on a video screen at London's ICA. The enigma and mystery surrounding the group conjured up on those anonymous Factory record sleeves could easily be maintained in such circumstances.

Anton Corbijn's movie now gives Joy Division a visual presence they never had in their three year existence. Using the iconic black and white imagery that makes his still photography so memorable, he perfectly captures the greyness of Macclesfield and the unglamorous drabness of their Manchester roots.

The received opinion is that Ian Curtis took his life when the band were on the brink of stardom. On the following day they were due to travel to America for a three week tour of East and West Coast venues and they had just recorded the single 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and their monumental second full length album 'Closer'.

Yet, had Curtis lived it's hard to see how his fragile, angst-ridden image would have wowed the U.S. and equally, it's hard to see how the band could have continued making songs of existential despair without becoming a parody of themselves.

They captured a point in time and we should be thankful for their legacy - two breathtaking albums, a handful of timeless singles and ,now, a movie that does them justice.

Here Lies Barmelo's PS3

Yeah folks, my PS3 is pushing up the daises (hey let's get the guy from the show in) and it's final curtain has finally fell. My beloved Playstation 3 has lasted less than a year before becoming one of the 1% of PS3's to have failed. It's a sad day, a truly sad day. I have contacted Sony and as it's under warranty they WILL be sending me a 'new' console free of charge, which should arrive on TUESDAY!

Why Tuesday of all days? Why that day? Tuesday is GTA day and that's not good especially if I don't get it back whilst 6pm and/or my Special Edition of GTA arrives early (which is possible). I guess it could be worse I could've ended up with no console for ages (a la Microsoft & the 360). I tried all of my local GAME shops and they've no 60GB consoles as they're discontinued so i have to rely on Sony not to mess it up.

I was having a rather good day up until that point too. I was off college so I decided that in my time of boredom that i'd visit the ol' cinema and watch a film. Well I rushed into the Odeon @ The Trafford Centre just in time to catch the beginning of the movie, that movie being the new Judd Apatow produced comedy, 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' starring Russell Brand (Various), Kristin Bell (Heroes/Veronica Mars) & Jason Segel (Knocked Up/How I Met Your Mother).

Yeah it was a pretty good movie. Russell Brand portrays, well, himself (with a different name o' course) and because of that, and the fact I like Mr. Brand's stand-up comedy, I thought it was a damn good movie and it pretty much had me laughing throughout.

God i sounded like a reviewer there. Well I guess that's my mini review on 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' and my verdict is that if you like Russell Brand and movies like 'Knocked Up' & 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' then this movie is for you.

Other than that i've been sat waiting for nothing as my PS3's dead and i've absolutely nothing planned i'm pretty much gonna be bored until it turns up or something rather eventful happens.

N.B. As a mark of respect for my PS3 (lol) I will stop posting the GTA countdown as of today, thank you.
