Monday

Monday was at the barracks, we had quite a bit of time to pack up and prepare for heading out that evening.  I think we did something else too, maybe a class, but I don't remember.  In any event, at 5 PM we loaded up on the trucks and headed out to the FOB.  Other platoons had a class at the FOB that evening, but ours didn't.  We ate dinner out there and then went to bed.  There was a bit of excitement and drama when we got there as there weren't enough beds in the female barracks, but after several hours some of the guys managed to bring some of their beds over.  It was kind of annoying because while the guys got to stay together as a platoon, the girls were all together and mixed with everyone in the Company and we were on the total other side of the FOB from the guys, making communication about where we were supposed to be and what was going on difficult.  Also, all the platoons are on different schedules, so people would be coming in and out at all times.  I imagine this will be much worse during week 6 when we're on 24 hour operations.

Tuesday

We woke up and did PT.  The plan was to go running on the road because our leadership was told the road was going to be closed, but then it turned out not to be closed, so we mostly stretched for 40 minutes.  Which was just as well since there wasn't time to shower before we had to head out next.  We got breakfast and then went out to do the live fire range.  That's basically where we do "tactical movements" then fire at various shapes/colors on our target sheet. So they say "fighting stance" and we have to get into this stance and then they'll say "triangle is enemy" and you have to shoot at that or "circle is friendly" and you have to shoot at all the targets except the circle.  That evening we went out to do the night fire at the pop-up range.  For this we used the Night Vision Goggles and this special attachment to the rifles that shoots out an invisible beam that you can see when you have the goggles on so you know where to shoot.  First, the NVG's are AMAZING.  It's the coolest thing ever.  You put these on and you can see everything, it's like daylight (well a hazy green daylight), but I was totally blown away by them.  After we went up to shoot, which was really difficult because one thing that didn't show up with the goggles was the dark targets we were supposed to be shooting, we all decided to put that several thousand dollar piece of military equipment to good use and laid down to watch the stars.  If you know anyone who is into star gazing and want to buy them a really expensive Christmas gift, let me suggests NVG's.  Basically, these things pick up anything putting out heat or energy, so you can see billions of stars that are not even visible to the eye.  I saw about 3 shooting stars, satellites, the milky way, etc.  It was really, really cool.

So after we all finished we got back into formation and the tower read off our scores by platoon.  Each person in the platoon got 20 shots, and they just counted the number of hits total for each platoon.  So they went though the first lane numbers, but then skipped ours.  We were wondering why and then after they had said the others, they came back to ours, announcing that we, as a platoon, had hit eleven targets.  Yes, that's right, eleven targets out of a total of 940 shots fired.  I suggested that we make our platoon motto "940 shots, eleven kills."  In our defense, whoever was in charge for our platoon apparently forgot or wasn't able to zero our lasers, so when we were shooting, the laser that was supposed to show us where to fire was not actually aligned with the target.  Nonetheless, the cadre was not overly thrilled with our shooting skills.

Wednesday

Wednesday we did PT again, this time mostly just some push-ups and sit-ups since it turned out that the road was not going to be closed after all.  Then we went out to "Liberty City" which is basically a make-shift Iraqi town (mosque and all) made out of sheet-metal craters.  We practiced clearing rooms, going up stairs, going down streets, etc.  It was pretty fun, although I did feel like we could have used more clear instruction on properly clearing rooms since most people (myself included) have never had extensive training on this.  Basically I had one or two labs during ROTC on how to do it, and nothing since then.  I felt like we all could have benefited from a bit more instruction, but nonetheless, things went pretty well overall.  We did that all day and then went back to the FOB for dinner.  Once it was dark, we went back out there for night time operations.

For the night ops, we were paired up with another squad and one of us were OPFOR (that means you play the enemies) and the other squad came in and cleared the room.  I thought it was pretty fun being OPFOR because you get to hide in the buildings and try and confuse the other squad.  I paired up with one of my squad-mates and we hid in one of the rooms right behind the door.  I didn't have a weapon and he stood right behind me with his weapon, using me as a shield while he shot at the others as they came though the door.  Part of the job of the room-clearing squad was to properly identify who were the enemies and who were the hostages or non-combatants.  Unfortunately, they shot me  as well as my partner! The second time through, however, they managed to properly identify me as a non-combatant and didn't shoot me. Each squad went though 3 times, first with no lights, then with the NVG's, then finally with "sure-fires" which are these very bright flash lights that attach to the weapons.

When my squad went in the first time, we had a minor blood-bath coming up the stairs as one of the OPFOR decided to take a position from the roof and sniped us one by one as we came up the stairs. At least half the squad was killed before someone was able to take him out.

Finally after all those drills were done, our entire platoon came together and did a mission on a larger "house."  This one went pretty well overall, I think, although I didn't get to see a lot of the action because my squad was on security outside the house.

Thursday

Thursday was pretty similar to Wednesday except we didn't go out at night.  The two platoons that hadn't gone out the Wednesday night for the night ops went out then.

Friday

Friday we had the Urban Assault Course.  They took us to this huge house, which was actually a house, not just sheet-metal.  Once again, my squad was on security, so I didn't get to see much going on inside the house.  As 4th Squad we are the "weapons" squad which means we are almost always suppressive fire and security.  After that we came home and had the rest of the day off.

Looks like our favourite borderline dystopian city will be experiencing a crime wave, as the Playstation flavour of Grand Theft Auto IV will be receiving patched in trophy support. Although currently no word on when the patch will drop and if any additional features will be included (custom soundtracks, anyone?), the full list of trophies has been released.

From the looks of the list, it appears these will not be retroactive, which is a great little incentive to replay this stunning game again. When we hear word of a solid release date, you’ll be sure to know. Until than, I’ll hedge my bets that the patch will come at a similar time to xbox’s paid content.

La sfida fra le ultime due scudettate, nonché fra le squadre più blasonate e con più esperienza alle spalle, si conclude con una netta vittoria dei fans di "O cacchio man" che, nell'occasione, approfitta di tutti i gol possibili immaginabili, nonostante le numerose defezioni. Alle reti di Mauri, D'Agostino (gran prestazione la sua)e Corradi, non certo titolari inamovibili della formazione di Mr Pinto, si aggiunge la fortunosa marcatura proveniente dalla panchina di Simone Pepe. Tuttavia da registrare che solo Zambrotta ha riportato un voto non del tutto sufficiente. Agli ex giovini non bastano i gol del solito Hamsik e del redivivo Zalayeta, preferito all'ultimo momento a Di Vaio, già sul mercato. Come al solito Atl. Da Giovane bersagliato dalla sfortuna, dato che anche in questo turno di campionato avrebbe perso soltanto contro la Mago Oronzo e proprio con gli stessi Pitoriani. Mr Buono ha già detto che, rebus sic stantibus, punterà alla Coppetta. Ovviamente dalle frequenze di Radio Dimensione Omosessuale, una radio un po' ambigua...

• Cock Team - Mago Oronzo 60,5 - 78

E' crisi nera anche per la Cock Team di Miki Valentini, che fa compagnia agli scudettati compianerottolai in coda alla graduatoria con ancora nessun punto all'attivo e con già 4 punti di distacco dai terz'ultimi e ben 9 dai primi (i bambini fortunelli). Valentini non riesce ancora a schierare una formazione degna del nome del Grande e Onorato Presidende: questa volta gioca addirittura in 9, non avendo praticamente difensori abili e arruolabili ad eccezione di Portanova. Vivamente consigliati prestiti, anche usurai, fin dalla prossima giornata. E in più il mister di Via Verdi poteva comprare qualche negro in più, che gli avrebbe assicurato perlomeno una migliore resistenza. La Cock Team è l'unica Fantasquadra a non aver ancora superato la soglia dei 200 punti in Coppetta. Dall'altra parte, un'ottima Mago Oronzo, che seppellisce l'avversario sotto il peso della doppietta di Milito e del gol di Borriello. Solo un'insufficienza fra gli Oronzi, quella di Nocerino.

• CCDT - Gli Sfiancati 67,5 - 67

A Floccari e De Rossi rispondono Amauri e gli assist di Foggia e Maggio. Pareggio giusto e positivo per entrambe le compagini, che avanzano di un punticino. Ancora bene Gli Sfiancati, mentre il negro sembra un altro dall'anno scorso. L'aria di Teramo e gli odori provenienti dalla mitica osteria di Mario spesso frequentata dal graaaaande Tommy Tedone (a proposito, vi consiglio di registrarvi sul suo ottimo blog www.tommytedone.it ) stanno favorendo le buone prestazioni delle due compagini.

• I Vacanti - Atletico Bilboa 65 - 67,5

Nuova grandissima dimostrazione di c... ehm... buona sorte da parte della squadra con l'abbronzante, che approfitta dell'uomo in meno dei Vacanti per fare bottino pieno per appena mezzo punto. A questo punto la fortuna dei Lentini è lapalissiana e urgono compagini pronte a dare bastonate a Mutu e compagni. A segno per i Lentini Patò e addirittura Marcolini, per Favia solo Pandev, che però sarebbe bastato qualora tutti avessero giuocato. Ora l'Atl. Bilboa è primo a punteggio pieno, ma è da notare che quasi tutte le altre squadre, compreso l'Atletico Da Giovane, ultima e triste con zero punti, hanno accumulato finora più punti nella graduatoria della Coppetta, che alla fine è un po' lo specchio dei meriti dei Fantallenatori (la Coppetta è nata per contrastare Umberto, che poi ha gufato così tanto che è riuscito a vincere pure quella...) ...

As the game loads up I feel the usual excitement of wondering what joys await me in the latest incarnation of Liberty City. After the initial visual hit of the opening sequence which is polished beyond perfection it is time to get to it. The main character is a man from the former Soviet Union with a mirky military past by the name of Nico Bellic. It seems he has come to start a new life and is lured to Liberty by his cousin Roman’s big talk of living the American dream. The storyline becomes Rockstar’s usual well-crafted blend of satirising modern America by using stereotypes and references from pop-culture. It’s all very familiar ground.

The changes are apparent instantly as the new driving controls now mirror conventions from the current generation of racing games, using the left and right triggers as brake and accelerator respectively and steering with the left thumbstick. It is a welcome improvement on the classic control system but if you want you can switch back in the options menu.

The other main change is the graphics. Gone are the stylised caricatures to be replaced by slightly exaggerated realistic character models. The environments are every bit as stunning as the publicity screenshots suggested. It almost feels like you are cruising Brooklyn or Queens. I do have one qualm though; the visuals are beautiful but they don’t quite sit the same with the game as the stylised caricatures of the GTA III generation. This makes settling into the game just that little bit harder than with Vice City or San Andreas.

GTA IV picks up just where the series left off, adopting the more focused approach of Vice City whilst expanding the possibilities for fun available to take advantage of the latest hardware. The new multiplayer options are well-implemented and are proving to be popular on Xbox Live.

There is no doubt that GTA IV is a superb game and is one of the finest titles available of 360 and PS3. Despite all the fantastic improvements and the sheer polish that Rockstar have poured into it, I just can’t help feeling that there’s something missing. Perhaps it’s just disappointment that it is more of a safe incremental improvement on a classic formula than a frontier-pusher. I don’t want to sound like a whiner here but, given how groundbreaking GTA III was, somehow I had hoped for more.

Those that have known me a while know there was a point in time in which I dabbled in the musical arts. As a writer (and erstwhile poet), I figured I had a strong enough command of words to write R&B songs and rap lyrics. This was something that I actually started early on, back in 1993 or '94 when I wrote lyrics for my buddy and partner-in-rhyme Priest. Priest, another friend named Black, and myself formed a group called BLB, which was the abbreviation for the community center whose majorettes we played drums for. Our producer was the talented but lazy Michael Raiford. LOL. If you didn't grow up in Orange Mound in the 90s, these names and places will mean nothing to you, and really this history has nothing to do with the video I want to share with you. I was merely giving background on my musical journey.

Anyway, when I got to college, I found musical kinship with my roommate W-I-Z, a Georgia native. Now this kid could spit. Not only that, he was able to bridge the gap between the Down South and East Coast styles, something that was unique when I met him. W-I-Z also had a knack for music production, and it was only a matter of time before the two of us began experimenting with it.

Fast forward to 2007. W-I-Z had been working with an artist calling himself Five Eleven, but the rest of us knew him by his earlier incarnation as R&B wonder J-Shin. W-I-Z and Five Eleven toiled in the studio, but the only song to come out of that pairing was the ode to sneakers "Chucks On My Feet." The original version, which can be seen here, encompasses the South Florida vibe, that 305 shit, that Liberty City/Opalocka shit. The video was directed by Regina J. Bennett of IBIS Entertainment, and they shot most of it in my old Liberty City stomping grounds. Yes, that's right, I once lived right off NW 62nd Street, walking distance to the MLK Metrorail station. Is my ghetto pass still valid now?

Well, even though the original song was dopeasfuck, I decided to go ahead and put my spin on it. My remix of "Chucks" is probably the last song I've produced, and I'm at least happy knowing that those who've heard it like it. Feeling bored, I took Regina's original video -- unaltered except for the addition of the Be Cool Entertainment logo at the beginning -- and replaced the original track with my remix. Look for cameos from hip-hop heavyweight Dynas as well as the infamous Ian Adams of the Playaz Oasis. Holler at remixed goodness after the jump.

I may get back into music production. Who knows? Since I am aware that a few of you have heard some of my other stuff, I will create some more videos and share them in the future. Most of you have been clamoring for my Paris Hilton song anyway, ahaha. Feedback is greatly appreciated!!

Com efeito, actualmente já existem milhares de pessoas a jogar GTA 4. Contudo a versão para PC ainda não foi oficialmente confirmada, apesar de já se ouvirem rumores de que esta nova peça da saga GTA não demore muito a chegar aos computadores.

Apesar de tudo e apesar deste jogo ser cobiçado por muitos adeptos destes jogos, há também informações que a violência bem explícita no conteúdo do jogo está-se a manifestar da pior maneira e a levantar sérias polémicas. Segundo várias fontes norte americanas, houve já um grupo de adolescentes nos EUA que usando os mesmos métodos de violência do GTA 4 (já saiu para Xbox 360 e para PS 3) assaltou uma loja usando um  carro roubado. O resultado final foram algumas vítimas e a convicção que este tipo de jogos pode causar sérios problemas na juventude.

Mas voltando às coisas boas do jogo, também já se sabe que nos EUA a versão para pc sairá no dia 18 de Novembro e na Europa três dias depois. A aventuras de Niko Bellic (protagonista e imigrante croata que vem em busca do sonho americano) desenrolar-se-ão em Liberty city, como não deveria ser de esperar. As novidades não se resumem a isto. É de referir que o número máximo de jogadores no multiplayer foi expandido para a versão do PC e que a  resolução máxima será de uns fantásticos 2560x1600.

Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto IV will be arriving on the PC on November 18 and November 21 in North America and Europe, respectively.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North and set in Liberty City, the latest installment in the enormously successful Grand Theft Auto series features a painstakingly detailed and life-like city for players to explore; a rich, immersive narrative experience; an original soundtrack highlighting the cultural eclecticism of Liberty City; and newly expanded multiplayer just for the PC.

Since Michael Jackson proclaimed himself the King of Pop, us here at Random Ramblings proclaim ourselves the Kings of Pop Culture. We knew there had to be some good that would come out of all those years of reading Rolling Stone and Spin (countless Trivia victories, for example).  This love for useless knowledge has branched out now to listening to various podcasts, and it was in this way that we heard any interesting claim.  Chad Johnson, wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, was being interviewed on Pardon the Interruption.  And he claimed that he knew inner city guys back home in Liberty City, FL that could destroy Michael Phelps, he of the 1,876 Gold Medals in Beijing.

Now, on first listen, we rejected this theory outright, since NFL wide receivers seem to feel like they are up there with God, Superman, and Billy Corgan (ok, ok, Superman is a little out of place in that list. Give us a break).  But we realized we have wondered the same thing: what if something amazing happened and we only had eyewitnesses and their word? It could be possible, although in the age of Youtube not very.  On quite a few trips to the beach with our good friend The National Evil, we have asked him the same question: what if a giant hand came out of the water, then immediately went back down? We would see it, and we both would know we had not imagined it, but no one else would believe us (but deep down we would not care, because that would be awesome).

Chad Johnson has a point that inner city youth might not be able to showcase their talents in the Olympics. But by that same logic, maybe affluent athletes do not have a chance to flourish in city games.  For every child in the ghetto that might be amazing at tennis, there might be a country club kid who would set the world on fire in stickball. I guess we'll never know, unless stickball becomes an Olympic Sport (which it should, along with Ultimate Frisbee, Connect Four, and Contra).  

This makes us question everything. What if all the greats throughout history who are recognized as the firsts at what they did were really 5th or 6th? What if the Wright Brothers, Albert Einstein, Roger Bannister, and Neil Armstrong merely got the publicity for their accomplishments, but were not really first? What if neither the chicken nor the egg were first?  

Keep your eyes open.  Nothing is as it seems.  Chad Johnson has just woken us up Matrix style, and made us realize that we are zombies, believing the "facts" we have been force fed our entire lives. Thank you, Ocho Cinco. Thank you.

GTA IV is set in Liberty City, the latest installment of the enormously successful Grand Theft Auto series features a painstakingly detailed and life-like city for players to explore; a rich, immersive narrative experience; an original soundtrack highlighting the cultural eclecticism of Liberty City; and newly expanded multiplayer just for the PC, GTA Liberty City for PC will be great treat to enjoy.

It is also worth noting that theXBOX 360 release of GTA IV got leaked on pirate networks days before the actual official release dates.

The new search engine Cuil debuts today, and it lives up to its name.  The name cuil (yes, it's pronounced 'cool') is Irish for knowledge.

"Cuil’s goals are to index the whole Web, to analyze deeply its pages and to organize results in a rich and helpful way that allows you to explore fully the subject of your search," according to the website.  "So we started from scratch—with a fresh approach, an entirely new architecture and breakthrough algorithms."

I like Cuil's privacy policy.  "We analyze the Web, not our users."

So far, Cuil has crawled almost 200 billion pages and indexed more than 120 billion pages.

Shock horror PS3 fans; Grand Theft Auto 4 is the absolute must have game to own on your amazingly underused consoles! If, for some ungodly reason you don't already own a copy then click for the link to sort this problem out sharpish and we won't have to tell your mates how much of a loser you are.

Anyway, after your finished completing the story mode of the game, which I'm sure many of you reading this will already have done - you find yourself making use of the GTAIV's unique and amazing ways to while away countless hours of fun even after the story is long over. Your sick little imagination is the limit here because you can do anything from buying clothes, taking helicopter tours, going drinking with your pals, maybe go to a gun store, purchase an AK47 and unload 500 odd rounds into an unsuspecting group of pedestrians... its your call..

One of the things I'd highly recommend you have a go at though is exploring the city and finding all the unique stunt jumps and other unofficial things you can use for some Evel Knievel style antics.
