The best way to find a winning lawyer is by word of mouth. Ask trusted friends, family, and/or business owners or professional associates who have recently used one. Ask them if they would use the same lawyer again and if they believe their legal fees were reasonable.

Other ways:

Internet legal directories: The Internet is an excellent source for finding attorneys in your community. Because of the interactive nature of the Internet, lawyers and law firms are able to provide much more detailed information to potential clients. For example, Attorney Pages.com allows visitors, for free, to browse through its listings and pick an attorney based on your geographic area and/or type of practice. Many of those listed have websites to give you a broader picture of the attorney’s skills. The site provides complete contact information so you can easily phone or email the attorney with your questions. Using the directory, you can also find a lawyer across the country to handle your college son’s landlord or traffic problem.

Local or state bar association’s referral services: Most bar associations offer referral sources at no charge or for a modest fee. Phone and tell them the problem and they will hook you up with a participating attorney who handles legal problems such as yours. Keep in mind that only a small portion of the legal community signs up and the association generally make no claims as to the attorney’s expertise or skills. For a list of state bar associations, go to http://www.abanet.org/barserv/stlobar.html.

Employer-Paid Legal plans: Many employers, unions and credit unions offer pre-paid legal plans. These plans are given as benefits to employees and may entitle you to free or reduced cost representation on certain matters. You should check with your office administrator about whether you are enrolled in such a plan.

Legal aid: You may qualify for legal aid representation at low-cost/no-cost. Legal aid primarily services low-income individuals and the qualifications for such aid can be based upon where you live, your income and family size. Legal aid representation tends to focus on landlord-tenant issues, credit, utilities, family issues, and unemployment. To find a legal aid office near you, call your state bar , your county court house , or try your local yellow pages under “legal aid,” “legal services,” or “legal assistance.”

Nearby law schools: some have low-cost, no-cost clinics that provide a limited amount of legal services.

Print Directories: For many decades the “Yellow Pages” were the traditional, and well-thumbed, source of listings. However, yellow page listings and/or ads do not give information about lawyer’s ability or competence. Other directories, such as the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, found in many public libraries, lists lawyers by state and city and give biographical details on each lawyer and rating information.

William James Lawrence Hamilton

Born July 1935-Disappearred 1959 from the Victoria, B.C, Canada area, at age 24.

In 1958, Bill and his wife and 2 children had moved from Trenton, Ontario to Victoria, BC, to live near Bill's family. One day Bill told his wife he was going on an extended fishing trip, and could possibly be gone for several months. She moved to Manitoba after he left.

Some time afterwards, two letters arrived, one from Bill,

and one from a letter from a woman who had lived next door to them on Shelbourne Ave in Victoria. Bills letter was brief, stating he was short of money.

The woman's letter however stated how she had heard the RCMP had found a rental boat, last rented by Bill Hamilton floating in the water empty.

Bill's wife cannot remember the exact years these letters arrived, but it was sometimes between 1958 and 1960.

In August, 1960, Bill's father passed away. Although Bill did not attend his fathers funeral, the obituary listed his son as living in Toronto. Nobody knows why, perhaps they just took a guess as his wife & children had moved back to Toronto around that time.

I guess we will never know if Bill simply began a new life somewhere, or if he has died.

Will my questions hang unanswered? It is as if Bill did not exist. But surely, someone had seen Bill Hamilton in 1958-1959. He lived, walked, breathed. He wasn't invisible, someone must know something.

Surely everyone who knew him has not died?

[caption id="attachment_99" align="aligncenter" width="460" caption="Credit: David McKinney, KU University Relations"][/caption]

One of my favorite things about attending the University of Kansas is the beautiful campus, especially in the Fall. I love walking around campus this time of year. I think the KU campus is one of the most underrated campuses in the country. Every building is architecturally pleasing and has so much history. Thousands of students walk the sidewalks every day without realizing the history that is associated with this school. It's things like these that make me love this school more and more.

KU plays Colorado at home on Saturday and I'm so excited to tailgate again. I've missed it so much. It's kind of sad, isn't it? It's only been a couple weeks but I felt like there was a void in my life. I missed the smell of hot dogs on the grill, the taste of a cold beer in a red Solo cup, and the sea of KU fans in blue. I don't care if you're a fan or not - there's nothing like college football; it's an experience.

So, even though my favorite season has arrived, I've been in a little funk lately. I think it's a mix of being overworked, always being stressed, and being lonely. I've been booked for the past couple weeks with meetings and studying. It's currently midterm and essay season and I think I can speak on behalf of every KU student when I say that it's been hell. Atleast Fall Break is a week away, thank god.

All I want is to have some time to do what I want. I think I'll devote my time during Fall Break to doing the things I love but never have time to do anymore. Maybe play some frisbee with a friend, have a picnic at South Park, and wander around Mass. Street. I miss freshman year. I had so much time on my hands to explore Lawrence.

Another thing that's been on my mind is being alone. Fall is such a romantic season and once again, I have no one to share it with. I hate seeing couples on campus, holding hands. It almost makes me sick to my stomach. I wake up every morning wanting there to be someone next to me. Call it the 'single blues' but I'm just plain tired of it.

Enough of my complaining. I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of Fall. Make sure you eat a lot of pumpkin bread.

-Megan

The University of Kansas in Lawrence is making news.

The Wichita Eagle reported that the student section at home football games is coming under scrutiny because of a chant that is yelled and can be heard by views and listeners at home who can hear it over the broadcasts of the game.

The chant, based on a line in the Adam Sandler movie "The Waterboy," says, "Rip his f---ing head off!"

Now the KU student newspaper, The University Daily Kansan, is taking a stand against the profane chant the student section uses as its rally cry.

According to the Eagle article, The Kansan's editor, senior Matt Erickson, is "leading a student-driven initiative to stop the chant" because it is distasteful and promotes a negative image for KU that isn't necessarily deserved or wanted.

In the article, Erickson said university officials have tried to put the kibosh on the chant, but students aren't inclined to listen to authority figures.

That's why, according to the article, he hopes fellow students saying enough is enough will help put an end to the uncouth cheer.

As a journalist, this entire situation intrigues me greatly.

I am a big supporter of First Amendment rights, whether it be for students on a university campus or for Joe Citizen walking down the street.

Even so, I believe the wonderful freedom to speak your mind and say anything you wish comes with a responsibility that some people overlook.

Just because you can say something, doesn't mean you should, even if it is a funny chant at a football game.

Tact needs to be used when considering how to exercise your freedom of speech.

I think Erickson and The Kansan should be standing up and pointing out how disgraceful such a chant is.

KU is becoming more dominant in the college football world, so the attention is even greater.

The students of KU need to rise to the occasion and be true Jayhawks who are proud of their team and school and who don't wish to harm either.

Continued negative attention could adversely affect everyone involved.

Most conceivably, broadcast stations may choose not to air KU football games because they don't want the chant to be heard during their broadcasts.

This could be bad fiscally for KU, as well as severely hurting the university's reputation.

In the Eagle article, it was said that football players and KU Head Coach Mark Mangino are going to "address the students directly."

Hopefully that will help.

I applaud Erickson and the other students who are standing up against the distasteful group-think taking place in the student section.

They understand the responsibility they have in being granted the freedom of speech in the First Amendment.

The Fresh Produce Art Collective is a group of artists devoted to the continuing creation and exhibition of new work. Our openly constructed collective is comprised of progressive, motivated and ambitious artists that meet weekly to plan new art projects, shows and parties as well as share ideas on technique and process. In addition to showing work, the collective aims to create a community of artists that can learn from and work with each other. It is the philosophy of the collective that a strong art scene is a direct result of strong ties between a community of artists.

Although we take a collective approach in the development of ideas and shows we take a distinctly individualistic approach to our own art making. From painting to printing, photography to sculpture, members of Fresh Produce work in a variety of different mediums and subject matter. What ensues is a visual feast. Our salon style shows become conversations between influences and styles. Collectively our medium is culture. Through the creation of original "Art Tries" (events, happenings or parties) the collective harmonizes their their individual voices to sing collectively in creating original and distinctly Fresh Produce "avants".

This blog has been a bit football top heavy this week and with good reason. But allow me to take a moment to highlight some other selected area sports results for this week, starting with my other favorite sport....soccer.

Portage Central- 9 St.Joseph- 1

The Bears suffered one of their worst defeats in school history on Tuesday night when they traveled to Portage Central. The Mustangs, who have always had a very strong soccer program, destroyed the Bears 9-1 in a Big 16 cross-over match up.

Portage had too many goals to list everyone who scored, plus I left at half time, so I'm not even going to bother. St.Joe's lone goal came from sophomore Kevin Chaddock. Central out-shot St.Joe 19-3. Overall, just a really poor effort from the Bears. St.Joe falls to 9-3-1 on the season, while Central improves to 8-4-2.

Kalamazoo Central-1 Lakeshore-0

The Maroon Giants needed only a goal from Keegan Davenport & Andrew Laur did the rest with 12 saves to secure the clean sheet. With the loss, Lakeshore falls to 11-3-1 on the season, as the district playoffs loom on the horizon.

OTHER SCORES

Soccer

Covert-2 Kalamazoo Home School-1

LMC-3 Fennville-1

Grace Christian-3 Michigan Luth-1

Tennis

Buchanan-5 Paw Paw-3

Lakeshore-5 Coldwater-3

Volleyball

Watervliet defeated Lawrence

Bangor defeated Gobles

The title for the show Intimate Distance has resonance through each of the women’s work. The work is not tied by style or medium but rather the concept that meanders through all of the work is Intimate Distance. Intimacy can be felt in Brant’s ceramic vessels; alluring the viewer to touch the candy colored glazes and soft feminine contours yet remaining distant, removed from the home and perched on a pedestal. While Brant’s work asks to be touched and caressed Salov’s work beckons to the senses in a different way. Her work sets up a series of personal metaphors that in their melancholy isolation request distance and require time for reflection after the initial moment of curiosity and closeness. Bulgrin’s paintings are similar to Salov's in the use of personal metaphorical language yet she uses the language in a different way, to share with the viewer a sense of a very large psychological distance at a miniature scale. Each woman’s craft pushes concept in varying directions and with many layers, the idea of intimate distance is only one facet that all three women’s work occupies.

I’ve talked time and again about how, while I say I like my job, I dislike the monotony, bored

I've talked time and again about how, while I say I like my job, I dislike the monotony, boredom and general lack of satisfaction that sometimes come with it. Many times, I feel like I'm sleepwalking through the day, writing one thing after another that nobody outside of my office will ever read and be moved by. But I think the part that gets me most is the commute.

Sure, I only drive 45-55 minutes to what amounts to little more than a suburb of Kansas City, but it still doesn't feel like home. It doesn't feel like the community that, over the last 20 years, has embedded it's self into my self and vice-versa. And that's what makes me think, sometimes, that I want out. It's what makes me know, all the time, that I'm only in this for the short term.

I want to go home. I want to make my place a better place. I want to pay taxes to my city and my state. I want to continue to soak up and reshape the old neighborhood. If I have to do sometimes unsatisfying work, fine. I understand not all writing can come from the inner depths of the soul. But if I have to write dreck, I'd like to do it in an environment that I am both comfortable in and affectionate towards. I'm tired of zipping down the interstate for what amounts to about two hours of my day just to do something I only mildly enjoy in a place that I am wholly indifferent towards.

William Wordsworth once wrote:

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.--Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn,
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

And all this in the 18th century. I wonder what he would think of me. Flying by the midwestern oaks and the streets and homes and people that I love at 75 mph in a car designed to shut out the outside world. All so I can go to a place where little in Nature is mine and invent new ways to keep the public "getting and spending."

Yes, it does seem like I have given my heart away for now. Hopefully, one way or another and some day soon, it will soon return home.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Arriving at the crossroads of default and destiny, Devin Harris is set to

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Arriving at the crossroads of default and destiny, Devin Harris is set to begin his first full Nets season as an undisputed vocal leader.

He is here by default because the Nets opted for youth in trading for him when they sent the aging Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks last season. Then they became even younger during the off-season when they added three rookies to their roster.

Harris is here by destiny because it is a challenge he has prepared for. Even though the former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson held restraints on Harris, the leash was starting to lengthen near the end of their Dallas tenures.

On a team that has a whopping seven players with less than two years of N.B.A. experience, Harris, a floor-burning point guard all of 25 years old, is the atypical, game-tested veteran.

“Next to never,” Harris said of the last time he had been in this setting. “This is a new kind of situation for me, only being five years in, but probably being one of the most experienced guys out there.”

That experience showed Saturday, as it did through most of early September as nearly all of the Nets convened to get a jump start on the season. Harris, with Vince Carter, encouraged their teammates throughout practice, pushing them here, pulling them there.

It will have to continue in the coming months if the Nets are to show promise and deny the dismal forecast skeptics have cast on their season.

“Being a leader is very, very hard for this reason: you have to be the same guy virtually every single day,” Nets Coach Lawrence Frank said. “When things are not going well for the team, when things aren’t going well for you, when there’s a heap of criticism upon you. So leading is tough. It’s hard, but he’s up for the challenge.”

Things did not go as planned last season when Harris joined the team in February. An ankle injury hobbled him, and learning a new offense midseason hindered him. By his own account, Harris labeled his defense lackluster.

“There’s no question about that,” said Harris, who averaged 15.4 points and 6.5 assists in 25 games as a Net last season. “Whether it’s injuries or not, I’m not making excuses.

“I’ve got to keep guys in front of me like I know I can and like they know I can. And I’ve got to be better at that.”

Once the season ended, Frank and Harris kept in touch, talking throughout the playoffs.

Frank offered Harris the keys to a revamped offense based on using Harris’s quickness, and they met in Chicago to diagram the best route for the pair to return to the postseason together.

With the infusion of youth, it may be hard to notice, but the Nets did add serviceable veterans, players who can teach and have been there, done that, in Keyon Dooling, Jarvis Hayes and Eduardo Najera.

But all have peaked in their professional careers. With Harris, the Nets will rely on a point guard who may be one playmaking step from ascending to the elite level, joining the likes of the Utah Jazz’s Deron Williams and the New Orleans Hornets’ Chris Paul.

“He is definitely capable and he’s ready for it,” Carter said. “You can just tell from his approach. Just talking to him and him wanting to step into that leadership role and be a part of it.”

Carter added: “And then just talking to him this summer and yesterday, he’s ready. That’s what he wants to do, and we’re all going to help each other to get to the next level.”

REBOUNDS

The Nets have 15 guaranteed contracts, the most allowed on a roster once the season starts. They have also signed Eddie Gill, Brian Hamilton, Julius Hodge and Awvee Storey to round out their training camp roster. ... Forward Yi Jianlian (sprained ankle) rode a stationary bike during the Nets’ morning practice. ... Vance Wahlberg, the Massachusetts assistant who designed the dribble-drive offense the Nets are installing, attended practice.

Like a came

My question: "What is the focus of this?" - "What is our focus?"
Like a camera, our senses focus on a number of tasks at once. Sometimes, we'll view red flower blooming. We'll note first the eternal hot flash, then the red color itself. Looking closer, we observe the fine lines holding it together like the fine lines that define the character in our palm. We find ourselves tumbled upon what is called the "mode of being" well defined by D.H. Lawrence as an act of concentrations. He discusses the moral struggle for innocent aims. The same application is tied to every situation in our life. Our acting is a busy one that always occupies us. What we find is the "now" being altered to "amused" or "working", but more or less "distracted" from the now. The "now" beats at every smallest fragment of a second, but every second our average brains move for a new ineligible correction, whether streamed or neolithic. We're constantly "being" and constantly "living", but the senses connected to our brains can't extract the now so brilliantly because our thoughts can't match up the present motion our input. What we see is already a saw by the blink of an eye. Like a lens, a film, we can pinpoint and target the picture. We analyze it, but we must first stand in that doorway before walking in. Instead of looking to the trees, become aware of your living senses (existence), aside from too much thought, really "live in the living" more so than "live in the moment" because a moment is a memory that has already passed. Don't let your mind See-Saw, but See-See; don't act towards putting everything somewhere in your brain, but act if every second you are in fact, living to use your living self, but be sure to make everything fragile in that whittle-down "now".

”for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

Perhaps more than any other verse in the Bible are we all confronted with our need for a Savior on Judgment Day. No matter how hard we try, or how many good deeds that we do, we have all sinned in the eyes of God and do not deserve to be admitted into His Kingdom.

Unfortunately many people think that they will be able to successfully rationalize their behavior, or reason with God about why they broke His laws on that fateful day. My heart breaks at the horror, hopelessness and terror of the eternal death sentences that will be given to those souls.

God is Holy and Righteous and Just. A Just God cannot accept the excuses of a guilty sinner at the time of judgment and remain a just and honorable God. To do so would make Him lie and violate His own Word. God cannot lie.

Fortunately Jesus was sent to earth from heaven to fulfill God’s plan. (John 6:38) Every aspect of His life—from His birth as a little baby to His death on the cross—was part of God’s gift and plan for us.

God gave His Son Jesus because we urgently need to be rescued from the penalty of our sin. Without Jesus we face a life of wrath and divine condemnation- (Romans 5:18)

There is nothing that we can do ourselves to pay the penalty that God requires for our sin. We need a Savior; Jesus who has offered to pay our sin-penalty for us if we repent of our sin and make Him our Lord. (Romans 6:23) Jesus lived a sinless life, and only He is qualified and authorized by God to cleanse us and make us children of God. He became our Redeemer, and through Him is the only path to join the family of God. (Romans 5:10)

Jesus offered His own life willingly on the cross as a sacrifice to pay for the sins of those who make Him Lord. God’s fierce wrath, and an eternal death sentence are but a heartbeat away from those who reject this free and amazing gift from Jesus Christ. Do not delay, the price of sin is unimaginable…

Alayna and Chris have a love story that began during their high school years. Now, they're almost finished with college -- and ready to start their married life together. Their engagement photo shoot was at Circle S Ranch near Lawrence, and I am so excited about the country-themed, relaxed photos that we got -- it reminds me of a simpler time, lazy summer days and young love.

The ranch has some awesome opportunities for unique backgrounds with textures, colors and a great middle-of-nowhere feel. I love this shot:

I love how vintage and timeless this photo is. I just love the joy in their faces!

And, finally, these next two are some of my favorites from their session and ever. It just doesn't get much cooler than a tandem bike, a big red barn and two people in love!

I couldn't decide which version I liked better, so you get both!

Chris and Alayna, thanks for choosing ericamay photography! I can't wait to photograph your wedding and work at Circle S again! You're great!
