That's why I read with great interest an article published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine (2008; 36(5):881-887). This study testing the effects of low intensity laser therapy and specific exercise for achilles tendonitis.

52 athletes were divided into two groups. One group was given low intensity laser therapy and strengthening exercises, while the other was given fake laser (machine not turned on) and the strengthening exercises.

Results showed that the low intensity laser group had significant improvements in pain and all other measured factors at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after the initial treatment, when compared to the exercise only group.

This is only one study looking at achilles tendonitis treatment, and so much more research needs to be done. However, it does show some promise for the use of low intensity laser therapy. In fact, it was this treatment, coupled with some acupuncture that finally got this Vancouver Chiropractor back on the road to health.

un artista di origini nipponiche di nome Hiro Yamagata ha deciso di ricostruire le statue. In che modo vi chiederete?

L'energia che servirà per far funzionare i laser sarà prodotta da pannelli solari e pale eoliche. L'intento sarebbe anche quello di produrre sufficiente energia da portare la corrente anche alla popolazione del Bamiyan.

Denise is going to Hawaii with her sister and their girlfriends but is leaving her kids behind. Denise said since she didn’t lose the 10 bounds she wanted to lose all her bikini bottoms are skimpy and she’s gone up two sizes in her jeans. I’ve gone up two jean sizes as well. Wait..did I just say that? Am I comparing myself to Denise Richards? Or am I just copying her? She’s very excited about her trip. Well, who the hell wouldn’t be going to Hawaii? But she has a fear of flying because she’s had a few really bad flights. She said before 9/11 she would go into the cockpit and she would feel fine but since 9/11 she can’t go in the cockpit. She said a few years ago she had a panic attack on the plane. Now, if anyone has had a panic attack you know its no fun and I am speaking from experience. Hold up folks…this time I am being honest. I used to have panic attacks and some would last two hours, but I haven’t had one in a long time. Back to Denise, since it is Denise’s show. When the plane landed they had to take her the ER because she blew up in hives from head to toe. She told them (doctor’s I guess) that she ate something bad and had an allergic reaction because she was too embarrassed to tell them she is allergic to planes. Now how the hell can you be allergic to planes? Now, she’s making things up. Her friend Kim is going to help her get over her fear of flying.

There’s a company called iFlying which is has an indoor sky diving and wind tunnel. Denise tells her assistant and friend its perfect, yet when she’s speaking to the camera she feels it’s a crock of sh** but she’ll try it. When she arrives at iFly (wow, I am really plugging their name aren’t I? I hope they plug my name some day) she has to sign a waiver. Then this fool is telling her about his hand signals and she asks him if this will cure her fear of flying, he says Yes but not in a convincing tone. I think she’s more nervous now than when she arrived. She finally goes into the wind tunnel to begin her indoor skydiving. She not happy and to the camera she says, “What part of fear of flying did he not understand?” She’s sooooooo sarcastic. My kind of woman. She goes on to say, “He taught us a lot of hand signals, but the one thing he forgot to tell us is how to get the f*ck out of there.”

Well she ends up getting on the plane and sits next to her friend Kim and those two end up arguing (not in a serious way) about something and they laugh and talk the entire five hours it takes to get to Hawaii. Well it was five hours for me when I went.

When she arrives in Hawaii there’s a fool there with a camera taking pictures of her. The paparazzi has followed her to Hawaii. What is wrong with these people???? I know they get paid for the pictures they take, but what about ethics, if that’s the word to use. This fool knows she’s on vacation and he will not leave her alone. She’s at a coffee shop by the airport and the stupid-head (paparazzi, not Denise) asked her where she was staying. Are you serious? Did you really just ask Denise where she was staying? Denise, in turn, asks him where is he staying and of course he would not answer. She and her friends leave (Kim, Michelle (D’s sister) and Trish) to go find their hotel.

Denise and her friends are walking on the beach and there’s the guy again. Denise walks up to him and asks what magazine does he write for. He says he’s independent. She asks him again the name of the magazine and he said he can’t tell her. She says when the pictures are published she will know which magazine and walks off. He next thing is learning to surf and again, that f*ck wad is there taking pictures of her. He’s the only one, mind you, doing this. She ignores him the best she can. She is not going to let him ruin her vacation. The girls decide to go lay on the beach to sunbath and for some reason, to take their tops off. Denise was a bit apprehensive because of that paparazzi guy. They all looked around carefully and what they thought was no sign of him, they took their tops off and rolled onto their stomach but sure enough here comes the needled*ck out of the bushes and begins snapping pictures. Well, now Denise has had enough and confronts the guy. She grabs her towel and tells him she wants to see what in his camera and he refuses. Her friend Kim goes to get her because she can see Denise is about to go off on this guy, which she does. Kim is finally able to get Denise back over with the girls and they leave the beach.

I believe Denise was in Hawaii for a few days. When she gets home her first mission is to see what pictures ended up on the internet and hopes her father hasn’t seen them yet. Her father, Irv (hey, I remembered his name) welcomes the girls home and says he just baked some cookies and offers the girls some, the agree. While he’s in the kitchen taking them out of the oven, Denise and her friends get on the computer and do find the pictures taken of her on the picture. She doesn’t seem that upset about them because they weren’t the one of her on the beach without a top.

And as usual, alls well that ends well.

NEXT WEEK: Denise is flying to NY to promote her show (the one I am watching) and all they (the interviewers) want to talk about is the supposed stuff she has done. It doesn’t seem any of them want to discuss her show. A few of the previews shows Denise very upset and crying on the phone to her father about what’s going on.

Boeing announced today that it has successfully completed the preliminary design of a rugged beam control system for the U.S. Army's High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator (HEL TD) program.

Boeing performed the work under the HEL TD Phase I contract it was awarded last year to design a beam control system for a truck-mounted laser weapon system. The objective of the HEL TD program is to demonstrate that a mobile, solid-state laser weapon system can effectively counter rocket, artillery and mortar projectiles. The program will support the transition to a full-fledged Army acquisition program.

"HEL TD is a cornerstone of the Army's high-energy laser program, and this successful completion of the preliminary design is an important step in developing a weapon system that can change the face of the battlefield," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of Boeing Missile Defense Systems.

"While rocket, artillery and mortar projectiles have traditionally been difficult threats to defeat, HEL TD's speed-of-light, ultra-precision capability will meet the warfighter's needs in this vital mission area," said Gary Fitzmire, vice president and program director of Boeing Directed Energy Systems.

The contract contains options that, if exercised, will call for Boeing to build, integrate and test the beam control system equipped with a command-and-control system on an Army tactical military vehicle, as well as develop the system-engineering requirements for the entire HEL TD system.

Boeing leads the way in developing high-energy laser systems for a variety of warfighter applications. These systems include the Airborne Laser, the Advanced Tactical Laser, the Tactical Relay Mirror System and Laser Avenger.

Squinting to see the lines on the road during fog or rain may soon one day become a thing of the past. CNN.com reports in the article titled "Futuristic windshield aims to help older drivers" that GM is currently researching a windshield that will use lasers, infrared sensors, and a camera to point out road markings, edges of the road, and even obstacles in the vehicles path.

The researchers are mainly targeting this system toward older drivers who can not see the road as clearly, but it's easy to see this technology being useful for all drivers. And who knows, maybe the technology that helps us more easily spot road edges could one day be used to help our future automated chauffeurs spot them as well.

I have always struggled with being hairy. I started shaving when I was 10 years old, maybe two years too late to avoid social embarrassment but I still remember that there were girls around me who had never picked up a razor in their lives, but thought to comment on my hairy legs. Boys would point out my already thickly forming mustache. I had been mistaken for a boy many times as a child.

My mom really tried to protect me from it. She let me thread my upper lip and took me to get my legs waxed as the regular course of hair removal for an Indian woman. It made no difference - the hair still came back like it was being shaved. I tried depilatories and got chemical burns, but the hair wouldn't come off. Shaving and waxing led to ingrowns which I would then pick on in frustration, leaving me with many scars all over my legs. And throughout all of this, my period was regular so no doctors have ever picked up on a hormone disorder.

Fourteen years later, I'm 24 and still struggling. I still haven't figured out the right method of hair removal, but I'm pretty meticulous. I wax my entire body once a month and my underarms every week. I get my face threaded every six weeks and my upper lip every week. I plucked the hair off my chin because they seem to grow darker and faster. For the last couple of months, every time I went to the salon, I came back nicked on my face from the thread, and burned and bruised with portions of my skin coming off with the wax. Furthermore, the ingrowns seemed to be getting worse. Besides just the hair growing underneath my skin, the pore would often become red and swollen and the skin around the area darker and discolored. The discoloration wouldn't go even after the hair was released. I was at my wit's end. A family friend suggested laser hair removal (not electrolysis because I just had too much hair). I began reading up on it again for the third time in three years.

I had often considered more permanent forms of hair removal but after reading that electrolysis only removes 30% of the hair after a year and that laser often leaves people with scars (the managing director at Citigroup is one famous case), I would shrug my shoulders and go back to my usual hair removal methods. This time, however, I've reached a point where I don't care if the laser scars. If it just removes the hair, if it just makes it grow less or lighter... ANYTHING will make a difference.

I researched a couple of places in my area and visited them. Some of them were pretty scary (if a place talks to you about how the flesh will burn in the first 5 minutes of your , conversation, or that their technicians haven't finished receiving all their certifications... well that's definitely a turn-off, not matter how much any of their clients recommends the place). At one place, the technician herself had blotchy, chemical burn looking skin and I definitely drove out of there as fast as I could. I finally settled on a place after month.

It's now been two full months since I last threaded, plucked or waxed. In those two months, I began by not touching the hair for awhile. It was excruciatingly embarrassing. I'm in a new city, taking classes at the local university. I have a handful of friends here, none of whom I have seen because I just... I just don't want to see them. I know that friends will accept you the way that you are... and they have. They've seen me at my worst, in baggy sweats, hair up, no make-up, whatnot... and that I can deal with. But memories of my childhood, being taunted for the hair, is too much to even bear the thought that I might be teased again. And lets face it, we never talk about that kind of embarrassment, not to anyone.

Besides not seeing them, I don't speak to anyone in my classes, afraid they are judging me. I know I did whenever I saw a hairy girl... I always thought that here I am going through so much pain to conceal it, why doesn't she? It's made the past few months very isolating.

After finally making an appointment at a laser hair removal place (and ladies, they are usually pretty busy so book it early), the cosmetologist told me I could shave the areas, but to make sure I didn't remove any hairs from the roots. So I shave my legs and underarms once a week, trim my bikini area every two weeks, and shave my face... every day. With my face, it's mostly the chin that bothers me. I can go days with touching my mustache - it really has gotten lighter over the 14 years of threading, or I've just gotten used to seeing hair there. But as time progressed and my hair growth all synced up, I was able to see how much hair I really had on my chin. And it's devastating and embarrassing. I don't leave the house on the days I don't shave. I try to only shave once in the morning, and try to be home within 6-7 hours after that. It reminds me of the show, Ugly Duckling, where the women were depressed because they were obese and hairy.

I'll post pics so you can see the before and after shots. This is what it looks like today, after three days of not shaving (it's Sunday, and I shaved Thursday morning). I haven't left the house since... hopefully, tomorrow will be different.
