Rodzina, ach rodzina. Wszyscy kochamy rodzinę. Mamę, tatę, i tę dalszą. Nie wszyscy? Och, przepraszam. Więc ty Wędrowcze też czasem masz ochotę urodzić sie sierotą ? ;)

Wujek po prostu o mnie zapomniał. A wiec i ja spokojnie i bez wyrzutów sumjienia moge zapomniec i o nim. I o Wawie. Stolica stolicą ale tak duże miasta mnie nie bawią. Są zbyt wielkie. Gdyby była ona chociaż poza Polską miałaby ten głęboki posmak nowości i poszerzania doswiadczenia... A tak nie ma.

Z kolei rodzina od strony mamy uważa że mam negatywny wpływ na młodziez - za szczera, do koscioła nie chodzi i umie rozmawiac o wszystkim. Niedobrze, bardzo niedobrze. A że nie boję sie tez krzyczeć na starszych ode mnie jesli mówią rzeczy głupie to oni boja sie mnie. Smutne. Moja kuzynka jest tak chuda, że zastanawiałam się czy nie popada w anoreksję czy bulimię. Chociaz moze nie. Kuzyn ma złe stopnie. Chyba. Jego rodzice nicna ten temat nie mówią. Ograniczają sie do mówienia na niego przy wszystkich "czarna owca" zamiast po prostu Adam. Jego mama ledwie ma maturę, ojciec po zawodówce kocha piwo i szpanowac nowymi telefonami. Żenada. Ale to ja mam zły wpływ na młodziez. Niech im będzie. Wiecej tam nie pójdę.

Z rodzina w domu tez bywa róznie. Mama wykręca rózne numery, Irek te co zawsze. Koalicje i antykoalicje. Sojusze i pakty. wielka polityka na 76 metrach kwadratowych. Czasami zabawne, czasami nie.

Katowice

I takim sposobem zataczamy koło. Od katowic kiedys wszystko się zaczęlo i na katowicach pewnie sie skonczy. W końcu to miasto nie jest takie złe. Jest tam piękny park, pewnie znacie, obserwatorium astronomiczne, ZOO i wesołe miasteczko. Ogólnie jest parę fajnych rzeczy, rózni ludzie. Mądrzy i głupi, ładni i brzydcy. Dobrze się bawie, spędzam milo moje wakacje. Wypady do Katowic nadają wakacjom milego akcentu ale tylko akcentu.

Życie

A życie toczy się dalej. I to nie prawda, że źle jest wspominać. Kiedy jesteśmy młodzi szybko zapominamy o nauczkach które dało już nam życie. Wspomnienia to szansa by nie popełnic tych samych błedów. By sie czegos nauczyć. Gdy natomiast jesteśmy już starzy wspomnienia to cos co nadaje blasku dniom szarym, takim w których już nie tak dużo da sie zmienić. Wędrowcze, nie licz na to że umrzesz młody, opalony, bez nadwagi, z kochaną osobą u boku. Prawdziwa lekcja zycia, prawdziwy cud zycia to doświadczanie, uczenie się, by to co zostanie po Tobie, by Twoja dusza cos z tego zycia wyniosła. Najtrudniejsze w tym jest to, ze nawiecej uczymy się w towarzystwie cierpienia i bólu.

Czyz życie nie jest jak droga? Pociąg jedzie po torach, casami zatrzymuje sie, by wpuscic kogos do srodka albo wypuścic na zewnatrz. Ma stację początkową, koncową. A co jest w środku pociagu zalezy tylko od zarządcy. Wedrowcze, obyś lepiej dbał o jakość swojego  życia niż PKP o pociagi...

God love ‘em, my parents did try to make their American children at least passably Polish.

They had us painting pisanki at Easter and breaking oplatek at Christmas. As soon as we were big enough to fit into Polish folk costumes, they had my brother, sister and I three-stepping at weekly polka dance lessons. And every Saturday we miserable three sat through a morning of Polish School, pretending to understand what the teachers and their mostly fluent, freshly-immigrated pupils were saying.

But try as they did to give us an appreciation of the culture they left when they came to the United States in the 1960s, my siblings and I had a pretty limited view of what it all meant. Best as we knew, these were the ingredients that made us Polish: Our parents had thick accents and fed us kielbasa and pierogi; We listened to bad polka music on Sunday morning radio; We wore red sweatshirts printed with white Polish eagles on the chest; And come the holidays, we hunkered around the dinner table and listened to relatives dressed in dark glasses and pilled sweaters talk, in between shots of vodka, about how hard their lives were.

Through my parents, aunts and uncles, I had a one-dimensional view of the culture; a 1960s view of Poland, with all our cultural reference points frozen in time.

Then came Krakow.

Twelve years ago, the city lifted for me the curtain on an entirely different side of Poland – the side that had moved on after my parents left. I saw dance performances and music concerts (of the non-polka variety). I wandered into galleries and learned about modern Polish artists. I studied the Holocaust and current Jewish-Polish relations at classes in Kazimierz. In my free time, I sipped coffee from under the rynek’s café umbrellas, watching the bohemians and academics and hipsters rushing to who knows where, and wondering: Kurcze! Why hadn’t I been exposed to all this sooner?

And so it was that at the age of 18, I fell hard and fell deep for Krakow. Twelve years later, and just last month, I had the chance to fall in love with it all over again.

I took a three-night detour through the city during a two-week trip to visit family. And oh, what a reunion it was. So much was exactly how I remembered it. Yet, on a subtle, energetic level, so much seemed different. The square was more vibrant, it’s people more colorful. There was an openness and ease about town that I hadn’t experienced the first time around. Whereas Poles seemed obsessed with all things American a dozen years ago, I sensed this time a more pronounced cultural-assuredness and Polish pride. It was rather like coming home to find your gawky nephew had finally grown into himself. And quite nicely, too.

So what did I find?

Well, here’s what’s stayed the same:

Krakowians still love their “Lady with an Ermine.” I swear, she’s everywhere. And everyone is eager to let you know she’s “the most beautiful” and “in the best condition” of all of Leonardo da Vinci’s paintings – Right here! In Krakow! The Most. The Best. The city still loves to traffic in these superlatives. (“Ul. Florianska? Why, it is the most beautiful street in all of Krakow.”)

Chimera is still a nice gastronomic break if you’ve had a few too many Polish meals. Try the green pokrzywy juice, and don’t be afraid. All I had known of the weed was the burning sensation it leaves after contact with the skin. Turns out, it makes a nice drink. Who knew?

Polish coffee is still an acquired taste. What’s with the inch of sludge at the bottom of the glass? And why is it poured, scalding hot, into a clear, handle-less glass? That’s just asking for all kinds of trouble. But then again, I come from a country where coffee shops have taken to marking their cups with “Hot Beverage” to avoid lawsuits from spill-prone customers who are shocked to find their hot coffee is, indeed, hot.

The Sukiennice is still tempting shopping, even if it is the Disneyland of Polish folk art. Meandering through it, I inexplicably felt the urge to buy linens, carved wooden boxes and paintings of Pope John Paul II. Then I snapped back to reality. We’ve already got piles of this stuff collecting dust in my parents’ basement. Call it the Maly Sukiennice of New Jersey.

Krowki candies are still like Polish crack. You think you can eat just one, and before you know it you’re sitting, numb, amidst a litter of empty, scrunched up wrappers. I was basically free-basing the stuff for two weeks.

What’s changed?

The obwarzanki. They’re still as tasty as ever, but I swear the Polish pretzel-bagel got super-sized over the past 12 years. They’ve got to be at least twice as big as before, no? What gives?
Kazimierz. The progress is unbelievable. I know there’s debate about the direction it’s moving in, but I recall how anxious we students were to walk those streets alone, especially after dark. It was desolate, sketchy and, quite frankly, dead. To return and find it alive and buzzing with activity was fantastic.

The main square. I swear, it’s been given some sort of subtle facelift. Everything looks the same, only it’s cleaner, brighter, more vibrant. Flipping through old photographs proves my theory, showing a drab, dreary main square. So, high five to the rynek.

When did they start charging to snap pictures inside St. Mary’s? I can understand limiting photographs of the triptych. But hounding tourists to pay up for shots of other nooks in the church? On top of the general admissions fee, it seems kinda greedy, no? (And besides, WWJD?)

So, those are the ramblings and impressions of an American girl who has a pretty big crush on Krakow. So much so that I’ve got designs to move there next year, short-term, and drink it in for a little longer. Three nights? That’s only long enough to be enamored with it. I’m thinking a stay of 6 months or longer is in order so that I can experience the full arc of emotions, just like a proper relationship: fall in love with her only to be disappointed by her; make-up with her only to threaten to walk out on her; see all her warts only to rediscover the beauty that pulled me to her in the first place.

Because, like the Lady with Ermine, I think Krakow is one of the “best kept” secrets, and “most beautiful” cities in all of Europe.

It's pronounced Crack-off. Or Crack-ov. Honestly I still can't reach a consensus on how to pronounce most of the words in Polish. If there's one thing you get tired of during traveling it's trying to speak another country's language with any amount of accuracy. We spend at least 4 days in every city we visit, though we've met a ton of people who consider 3 days to be a long stay. I have no idea how these travelers have the time to learn Hello and Thank You. It's easy to get lazy about learning languages, though, especially when half of the world has taken the trouble to learn how to speak English. Of course if they've taken the trouble to learn our entire language, the least we can do is learn how to say thank you in theirs.

Well however you pronounce Krakow, I have to admit that it's wonderful. The city is a wonderful mix of ancient and modern. Relatively intact after the second world war, all of Krakow's rich history is still there to witness and enjoy. Gage and I started our tour of Krakow with Wawel Hill where the some of Poland's first kings set up residence. It's kind of a crazy mish-mash of different buildings and landscaping, but the view you can get of Krakow is priceless. We ran up there early Monday morning to get free tickets to the State Rooms and then bought some tickets to the Dragon's Den, which was truly awesome. Legend has it that it used to hold a dragon which King Cracus slayed, and the tunnels are fantasy-inducing enough that I'm inclined to believe it.

Krakow is pretty well known for having a huge market square and I have to say that it's pretty impressive, though it doesn't hold a lot of magic for the budget traveler. As you can imagine, a hot tourist destination is not interested in offering low prices (although anyone who actually had a job would find the restaurant prices to be about half what they are in the USA). What all of Poland does offer is the glorious Milk Bar. The milk bars used to be subsidized by the communist government so that workers had an inexpensive place to eat. Basically they are glorified cafeterias for the working class. There aren't as many as their used to be, but those that still exist are still cheap and, more importantly, still delicious. I finally realized how deep my Polish roots were when I ordered some pirogies and they came out as pasta dumplings filled with berries and topped with cream. And this dish was on the dinner menu! See mom and dad, dessert can be dinner. Poland says so.

I might be facing divorce if I don't mention Gage's favorite aspect of Krakow, Planty. A little background information is necessary here. After seeing a strip from my favorite comic Get Fuzzy in which Satchel, the dog, reveals to his owner that he names every inanimate object in the house by adding a 'y' to their name, Gage and I started doing the same. So when we sat down on our couch we were 'sitting on couch-y' or 'Gage was working on Mac-y'. So imagine our elation when we found out that lamp stores in Poland are called 'Lampy' and hot dog stands have signs that say 'Hot Dogi' and computer stores often say 'Komputery'. Well what finally did it for Gage was learning that Krakow had filled in the moat that formerly surrounded the city and turned it into a gigantic park that circled the city and they named it...wait for it...Planty. Poland is our kinda country.

Krakow Suggestions:

- The hostel that we stayed at was incredible. I can't recommend Deco Hostel enough. Though I have to say that Krakow is apparently changing the hostel game because most people have given glowing reviews of their Krakow hostels. Either way, I don't think you can beat Deco Hostel's amenities for the price. It's a 10 minute walk to Old Town and it's on a busy road which means you should bring ear plugs, but at least you have something to look forward to when you walk home.
- Krakow is full of museums, many of which are free on certain days. Guidebooks often get those days wrong so check the museums' websites for details of free days before making the trip.
- If you want to get some of the free tickets to Wawel's State Rooms available on Mondays, be sure to arrive at the ticket office before 10am. There is a sign board with a count down for the amount of tickets remaining right next to the ticket window. Whether or not you get the free tickets, it's worth the few dollars to buy a ticket to the Dragon's Den, Wawel's underground tunnel system.
- You can find milk bars by looking for restaurants with the words bar mleczny on the sign or window. If you want to be safe order the pirogie ruskie which is potato and cheese. If you want to have fun point to something on the menu board and cross your fingers.
- The clock ceremony in Collegium Maius isn't quite as exciting as you may be led to believe. See previous post.

UEFA sugeruje, by zastanowić się nad zmniejszeniem stadionów. Gdańsk, Poznań, Wrocław oraz Odessa na Ukrainie nie będą bowiem w stanie obsłużyć wszystkich kibiców, którzy zmieściliby się na trybunach. Zabraknie miejsc noclegowych, a lotniska nie będą w stanie przyjąć naraz tak dużej liczby pasażerów. Zdaniem Michała Janickiego z wrocławskiego urzędu miasta, na takie sugestie jest za późno, gdyż umowy w sprawie projektów stadionów zostały już podpisane.Raport jako kluczowe wymienia także inwestycje drogowe, zwłaszcza budowę autostrady A4 łączącej Kraków ze Lwowem oraz autostrady A2 łączącej Poznań z Berlinem i Warszawą.(onet)

• Temporarily closing airport operations - Operations temporarily ended at Seven Airports - Basel, Budapest, Krakow, Palma, Rzeszow, Salzburg and Valencia.
• Capacity Cuts at others - The airline is cutting down on 14% of its flights in/out of London's Stansted Airport this winter from 1850 to 1590 a week. I just found out that Joseph Conrad (otherwise known as Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) lived in Krakow as a teenager. I live in Krakow, and that means I can cobble together a cheap post composed of references to Conrad, rivers, and people gasping "The horror… ! The horror…!"

Joseph Conrad—the inventor of Apocalypse Now, the Starship Nostromo, and Habitat—was born somewhere in what is now the Ukraine in 1857 and very sensibly moved to Krakow in 1869. After messing about being a teenager for a few years he later went on to write a series of books that have been mercilessly boring other teenagers to near insanity ever since. Annoyingly he wrote them in English, so I was among those subjected to their narcoleptic powers. Exactly why he wasn't able to restrain his endless ramblings about fate and guilt and duty and all of those other things that exam composers are so enamored of to Polish or some other language that needn't have troubled 99 percent of the rest of the world we will never know.

In Krakow no one can hear you scream (damn it, wrong movie!)

The one thing that everybody knows about Conrad is that he wrote Heart of Darkness, which is incredibly dull, and that Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now, which is incredibly cool, is somehow 'based' on it. Nobody with any sense has bothered to read Heart of Darkness beyond page ten, while none of the same people have failed to watch the movie less than ten times. The result is that everyone who's seen Apocalypse Now thinks they know what Heart of Darkness is about, which they don't and they're much better off in consequence. The other consequence is that, somewhere, Joseph Conrad is rotating in his grave at a steady 700 rpm.

By the way, did you know that Alien (the movie that features the USCSS Nostromo—named for a Conrad novel) was released in the same year as Apocalypse Now? Makes you think doesn't it… Makes me think about Ripley in her underpants anyway.

The River Bit
Krakow is a river city. I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this already. The mighty Vistula flows through her in a delightfully none-too-broad, none-too-rapid, none-too-sluggish kind of way. There are swans, hardly ever eaten by the inhabitants, pagan wreaths thrown in by lovely maidens in mid summer, and a complete absence of olive green PBRs crewed by CIA assassins. In fact there's a remarkable lack of boats of any kind. Sure, there are a few rusting hulks tied to the shore masquerading as 'pubs' and dozens of weird little craft designed to extract hard currency from summer tourists, but it's incredibly rare to see an actual boat. By this I mean you almost never see privately owned pleasure craft cruising along the river going from someplace else to someplace else. In my typically perverse way I therefore conceived a scheme to cruise down the Vistula from Krakow as far as Warsaw, and maybe all the way to Gdansk.

I didn't get very far. As far as I can tell there is zero information on the interweb thingy about how possible this is. The best I was able to ascertain is that the Vistula is 'navigable' for some 900 km from the sea but that nobody has really bothered to do it since the days of the Hanseatic League 700 years ago. I'm intrigued. If I plonked, say, a 20-foot-long shallow-bottomed river cruiser into the Vistula just beneath Wawel Castle and headed north exactly how far do you think I would get? And if I headed south, towards the source, would I end up in a village full of skulls on stakes ruled over by Lech Wałęsa with a shaved head? It's a tempting idea.

I'm here a year now... waiting for a mission... getting softer; every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Polak squats in the bush, he gets stronger…
