Fra folk som samler på skiver og denslags hører man ofte "De falt av etter den første EP'en/skiva" eller "Jeg likte demoen". Jeg er av typen som ofte liker originalen best. Kanskje litt fordi jeg dermed føler at jeg har et bedre grep om musikkforståelsen enn stakkaren som fabler om hvordan Britney gjorde en fresk versjon av "I Love Rock'n'Roll" (ok, så er det ingen som har sagt det, trolig noensinne, men det belyser hvertfall poenget mitt). Uansett. Noen ganger gjør noen en versjon av en låt som utklasser originallåta. Det finnes mange eksempler på dette, noen er mer aksepterte enn andre. At Aretha drepte Otis på "Respect", f.eks, det er vel alle enige i.
Men her om dagen slang en bekjent ut en brannfakkel. Amulets versjon av "You Keep Me Hanging On" var best. Du har ikke hørt den, sier du? Du går glipp av stor kunst. (Strengt tatt bør det også nevnes her at vi alle bør være enige om at "Mystified" er den beste Amulet-låta. Med "Diamond" på en god andreplass. Nuvel.)

Siden jeg ikke finner noe tidligere enn dette av Amulet på YouTube, velger jeg å slenge inn den versjonen av Supremes-låta jeg mener er best.

Ok, så hadde Kim Wilde bare 2 (3, med litt godvilje) bra låter. Men denne, denne er en stayer. Og trer støttende frem for enhver pike i sin beste alder som er lei av å gresse. "Why don't you be a man about it?!" liksom.

"Szansa na sukces" w Sopocie

Złamałem się i postanowiłem choć troszkę popatrzeć i posłuchać... Na dzisiejszy wieczór szykował się "wypas" - podróż do lat 80. - występy "gwiazd" takich jak: Sandra, Samantha Fox, Sabrina, Limahl czy Modern Talking.

Było to przeżycie conajmniej osobliwe. Niby oprawa całości nieco lepsza niż za czasów TVP (nie wiem jak było rok temu, bo generalnie tv nie oglądam, więc piszę na podstawie mglistych wspomnień). Imprezę prowadził Szymon Majewski. Showman? Chyba tak. Aczkolwiek męczący jest już jego żart. W każdym bądź razie... Nie oglądałem od początku. Ominęła mnie Sandra. Zacząłem od Samanthy Fox. Na scenę, po przydługim intro, wyszło coś co kiedyś przypominało kobietę. A teraz jest jakimś stadium rozwoju między kobietą a mężczyzną. Muzyka z playbacku, ale wokal... nie! Śpiewała na żywo. A raczej starała się śpiewać. Fałsz za fałszem... Było oczywiście słynne "Touch Me". Trzy numery i koniec... Teraz Limahl i Kajagoogoo... Jeszcze większy problem ze śpiewaniem. O ile refreny były w miarę zrozumiałe, o tyle zwrotki przypominały seplenienie jakiegoś 3 ligowego hip hopowca. Strasznie niewyraźnie... Ale ludziska się cieszą. Nawet bis zagrali! No i wreszcie jest... Sabrina! Zdecydowanie lepiej wygląda niż Samantha Fox. Cycem świeci tak jak kiedyś, widać już te 40 lat, ale przynajmniej możemy mieć pewność, że to jest kobieta. Zagrała "Boys" w jakiejś nowej, zremiksowanej wersji, też często nie nadążając za podkładem i... chyba 30 min reklam. A po nich? Kim Wilde! A Sabrina?! Tylko jeden numer? Buuuu... Kim Wilde zaczęła od "Kids in America"... Ona już też źle wygląda... Ale jeszcze gorzej śpiewa... Nie dałem rady nawet całego numeru. Miałem już dość tej "Szansy na sukces" w marnym wydaniu i wyłączyłem. Zawiodłem się. Szczególnie Sabriną. Dlaczego tak mało? Bo dlaczego tak słabo to chyba nie wypada pytać?

If you can't judge a book by it's cover, what about a vintage record sleeve? One of the lost art forms of the twentieth century is LP cover art. As a visually aesthetic person, it is difficult for me to purchase a product that does not come in a beautiful package. And if your musical taste is a reflection of your personal style, how can you buy a commodity in an inferior wrapping? I used to spend hours wandering around Tower Records debating the merits of various artists. This was never more true than in the 80's when fashion and music were indistinguishable from one another. You were what you listened to, and a clever cover was the ultimate accessory. Of course, this superficial mentality is exactly what makes critics dismiss the greed decade as a blur of haircuts and shoulder pads. This is a shame because it is probably the last time period to truly innovate musically without relying on an obvious retro sense of sound. But I have to admit that the definition of good taste was dramatically different back then. There was a sense that we were living through a bizarre moment in history. As the years flew by this generation whipped itself into a weird frenzy. It is hard to imagine that the participants in this sordid fashion show did not have one tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of course, this is exactly what makes the era ripe for a strange brand of nostalgia. In order to fully appreciate the cultural artifacts of the day, you have to acknowledge the absurd elephant in the room. Looking through my vinyl collection, you could count the fashion mishaps with wicked glee. It is in this subversive spirit that I present my next video. If image is everything, this type of self-reinvention could be considered positively masochistic. If only Kim Wilde weren't so breathtakingly gorgeous, you could ignore the whole album. But there is a striking visual element to this LP that is hard to resist. In 1984, Miss Wilde changed from a girl wearing secondhand clothes and self-dyed hair to a Barbarella inspired sci-fi goddess. This was a dramatic departure from her previous style. Somebody call a fashion emergency for this singer, we need a talented stylist! Groomed within an inch of her life, Kim sports a cornucopia of bad trends. After this failure of this project, Kim switched back to an image she felt more comfortable in. And taking control of her own image seemed to be a wise choice, as the success of the next album would prove. But for 80's trash connoisseurs, this record sleeve is in a league of its own. In an era of extreme excess, this graphic design stood out as particularly over-the-top. For one brief shining moment, this new wave vixen reveled in all of her Goth-Glam glory. After all, you should always put your best merchandise in the shop window!

Szanowni Państwo!

Tylko w Operze Leśnej i tylko na antenie telewizji TVN najważniejsze wydarzenie muzyczne lata! Co tam lata - całego roku! A może nawet dekady lub ćwierćwiecza... Wystąpią przecież gwiazdy światowej sławy, idole całych pokoleń, ikony piosenki, królowe i królowie parkietów, baronowie wielkiej sceny i jak tam sobie jeszcze chcecie - każdą bzdurę można napisać w press releasie, a większość mediów i tak to powtórzy, z braku czasu, refleksji czy po prostu z lenistwa.

Kogo my tu mamy? Oj, grubo, naprawdę grubo...

Sabrina - wykonawczyni diskopolowego (czy tam italodiskowego, whatever) hitu "Boys", właścicielka wielkich piersi i malutkiego głosiku. Już kiedyś występowała w Sopocie, równe 20 lat temu, i nawet wtedy wydawało się to raczej kiepskim żartem.

Samantha Fox - taka Sabrina, tylko w wersji blond. Mokry sen nastoletnich onanistów późnego PRL-u. Od kolegi, który twórczo przerobił jej największy hit "Touch Me" na polskojęzyczny "Wsadź mi", za kilka plakatów Samanthy z "Dziennika Ludowego" otrzymałem wycinki z całego rocznika "Bravo" o Helloween, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden i Ratt. Transakcja życia. Dobrze więc wspominam Samanthę.

Sandra - kiedyś na kolonii, chyba w Rowach, poprosiłem jedną taką Martę do tańca przy "Maria Magdalena", więc Sandra też mi się dobrze kojarzy. Ale potem didżej puścił jakąś wolną piosenkę (wiem, "Carrie" Europe!) i mogłem przesunąć się o pół kroku bliżej Marty, więc Europe kojarzy mi się jeszcze lepiej. Na pewno przyjadą do Sopotu w przyszłym roku, za co z góry telewizji TVN dziękuję.

Kim Wilde - Wiecie, że jest zawodowym ogrodnikiem? Czy ogrodniczką? No, w każdym razie chodzi o to, że na szczęście mało śpiewa. Jej książki o kwiatkach i krzaczkach są za to dość popularne na Zachodzie. Jak już ktoś na Wiertniczej tak bardzo Kim kocha mógł kupić do TVN Style jej program o ogrodnictwie, robiony swojego czasu dla BBC...

Limahl - kiedy juz znudziło mi się bycie Bruslim, postanowiłem zostać Limahlem, ale do szkoły nie pozwalano nam chodzić z nastroszonymi włosami. Tata ustrzelił mi więc na strzelnicy prasowankę, mama żelazkiem zrobiła co trzeba i przez chwilę zadawałem szyku na szkolnych dyskotekach. Przez kolejnych 20 lat o Limahlu nie słyszałem i jakoś nie tęskniłem, aż tu kiedyś w Niemczech, w małym hoteliku w Bawarii (takim małym, że nikt nie pomyślał o podłączeniu choćby jednego kanału anglojęzycznego) zobaczyłem w telewizorze program "Comeback - Die große Chance". To jedna z mutacji "Idola", w której publiczność i jury znęcali się nad zapomnianymi gwiazdami. Wypłowiały Limahl wdzięczył się tam do publiczności u boku takich tuzów jak C.C. Catch (a właśnie, drogi TVN-ie, cóż za zaniedbanie!!), Haddaway i Coolio. Żal było patrzeć. Nie wiem kto wygrał ów show, ale o żadnym spektakularnym comebacku gwiazd z tamtego grona nie słyszałem...

Jeszcze Shakin’ Stevens i Modern Talking… No nie, naprawdę już nie chce mi się silić na anegdoty z lat szczenięcych. Każdy przecież zna i każdy wie, z czym mamy do czynienia. Kiedy TVN przejął organizację festiwalu w Sopocie myślałem, że będzie dobrze. Ba, było dobrze i myślałem, że będzie coraz lepiej. Najpierw Simply Red, świetny koncert. Rok później Katie Melua i Elton John. Oczywiście, już wtedy pojawiły się demony przeszłości, choćby w postaci Demisa Roussosa i Karela Gotta, ale to był tylko niewielki element festiwalowej oferty, no i Roussos kiedyś jednak wielkim wokalistą był. To nie Sabrina… Rok temu było gorzej, znacznie gorzej, jakieś niedobitki Village People czy Hot Chocolate, ale przyjechała też Norah Jones, nobilitująca ten brokatowy cyrk. Widocznie jednak i to nie wystarczyło, żeby w weekendowym prime timie stawić czoła konkurencji. Bo co z tego, że na Wiertniczej i w Operze Leśnej dwoili się i troili, skoro Polsat w tym czasie po raz setny puszczał film o tym jak Van Damme jednym pierdnięciem łamie kręgosłupy czterem brzydkim Chińczykom - i miał większe słupki.

W przyszłym roku proponuję więc nie szukać na siłę kolejnych gwiazd i pseudogwiazd z przeszłości, tym bardziej, że lista coraz krótsza. Trzeba po prostu zorganizować wybory Miss Mokrego Podkoszulka, jedzenie hot dogów na czas, międzynarodowy konkurs karaoke (tylko niech wszyscy śpiewają „Małgośkę” albo „Białą armię”, żeby się telewidz nie męczył słuchaniem piosenek, których nie zna) i sukces murowany! Trzeba też koniecznie sprowadzić naszą rodzimą odpowiedź na Sabrinę czyli niejaką Danutę Lato. Można ją wcześniej przepuścić przez te wszystkie „Kulisy sławy” i „Rozmowy w toku”, posadzić na kanapie u Wojewódzkiego, i spokojnie kobieta poradzi sobie jako główna gwiazda Sopot Festival 2009.

Telewizja TVN podczas Sopot Festival 2008 przypomni gwiazdy lat 80. Na deskach Opery Leśnej zobaczymy Sabrinę, Samanthę Fox , Sandrę, Kim Wilde, Limahl i Kajagoogoo, Shakin' Stevensa oraz Tomasa Andersa i Modern Talking.

Festiwal w Sopocie rozpocznie się 23 sierpnia w sobotę i potrwa do niedzieli. W pierwszy dzień imprezy odbędzie się Międzynarodowy Konkurs o Bursztynowego Słowika i Słowika Publiczności. W półfinale wezmą udział polskie gwiazdy: Formacja Nieżywych Schabuff, For Teens, Natalię Lesz, Pectus, Video feat. Anna Wyszkoni. Spośród nich 23 sierpnia profesjonalne jury wybierze reprezentanta Polski do półfinału międzynarodowego. O Bursztynowego Słowika i Słowika Publiczności rywalizować będą: Ruslana, Matt Pokora, Danny, Oh Laura, Mans Zelmerlöw i Velvet. Laureata Bursztynowego Słowika wybierze profesjonalne jury, zdobywcę Słowika Publiczności wskażą widzowie.

^ Shakin' Stevens - jedna z zagranicznych gwiazd tegorocznego Sopot Festival

W niedzielę usłyszymy m.in. Sabrinę Salerno, której sławę przyniosły utwory "Boys (Summertime Love)", "Hot Girl" czy "All of me (Boy Oh Boy)", byłą modelkę topless Samanthę Fox znaną z piosenek "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" oraz "Do Ya, Do Ya (Wanna Please Me)"; Sandrę, autorkę wielkiego hitu z 1985 roku "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena" i przebój "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" Modern Talking.

Festiwal w Sopocie po raz pierwszy odbył się pod koniec 1961 roku. Jego pomysłodawcą był Władysław Szpilman - wybitny kompozytor i pianista, a także dyrektor muzyczny Polskiego Radia. W tym roku odbędzie się 45. edycja festiwalu. Po raz czwarty zorganizuje go TVN.

June 20, 1938 - May 30, 2003

Mickie Most (with Suzi Quatro on his left in photo) was an English producer and label owner who had a run of Number One hits with a stable of artists that included the Animals, Donovan, Suzi Quatro and Herman's Hermits. Most started his career as a performer in London coffee houses where he met future partner and Led Zeppelin manager, Peter Grant. He had a semi-successful run during the late '50s and early '60s but grew tired of the touring so he explored opportunities on the business side of music. He started out in sales and merchandising and soon landed a gig in production at Columbia Records. His first act was a little band he found called the Animals who he helped record a worldwide hit with "House Of The Rising Sun," and in turn received a Grammy for Producer Of The Year in 1964. Then came Herman's Hermits who had a string of hits that at one time rivaled the Beatles. Other artists he recorded included Lulu, Jeff Beck, the Seekers, Nancy Sinatra, the Yardbirds and Brenda Lee. In 1968, Most partnered with Peter Grant to open RAK Management and a year later, RAK Publishing and RAK Records. Artists signed to RAK Records included Suzy Quatro, Sweet, Hot Chocolate, and Chris Spedding. By the '80s, he had discovered Kim Wilde and produced her worldwide smash, "Kids In America." And later appeared as a harsh judge on a British television talent program called New Faces, which no doubt helped create a future television star by the name of Simon Cowell. Most died of mesothelioma, a cancer generally associated with the exposure to asbestos.
