There are two ways to answer these questions, either ask someone who has cleared it or read  nice blogs about GMAT. Asking to a 750 scorer, was a  good motivation for me and reading blogs gave me a straight forward guidelines.

The best section to start with is Verbal Section as it demands quite a bit time to get used with types and patterns of the questions.

It took almost twenty days to complete the Kaplan & Manhattan SC spending 3 hrs every day and more than 6 hrs on weekend. I have prepared some notes and flash cards hope to share with you after I put the below things together. The aspiring candidates should take lots of notes of mistakes and tips while preparing for it.

College seniors know that prospective employers check their Facebook and MySpace pages; now high-school seniors have evidence that college admissions officers browse them as well.

One in 10 admissions officers has looked at an applicant’s social-networking profile, according to a report released today by the test-prep company Kaplan Inc. Of those who peeked, 38 percent said what they saw had a negative effect on their evaluation of the student. Fewer — a quarter — said the effect was positive. ... [via Chronicle of Higher Education]

Is this really a surprise? Is it a violation of ethics? Should your information on Facebook or any social networking site for that matter, have any impact on college entrance? These are all questions that arise when reading something like the above.

I see two things here: (1) college admissions officers are actually using social networking information to make decisions about college entrance for students (some just 17-19 years old.); and (2) social networking is perhaps being given more clout than it should.

When applying to a college or university there can be a lot of information passed on from the student to the college. This usually occurs in the form of an application which may or may not include a personal essay,  demographic information, family history, education history and the applicant is so lucky s/he gets to pay for someone to go through all of this information. At what point does the application process cease to be enough information from which to make a decision about whether or not a prospective student will likely succeed at their college or university? If social networking is to be included in the decision, shouldn't this be disclosed somewhere in the application process? I think it's fair to say that the majority of human beings want to "put their best foot forward." If for whatever reason, you had a lapse in judgment or were in the process of still formulating a decision about a particular person, place or thing, should this be included in the final decision about how you prepare for your future? For example,

In one instance, an admissions officer was looking at a student community web site for feedback on their school. One applicant submitted a review, and the officer tracked down that student's social network profile. On the profile, the student bragged that he felt that he had aced the application process for that school, and also that he didn't feel that he wanted to attend that school. This led the officer to reject the applicant. [via Kaplan]

Is uncertainty not a common thing among 16-18 year olds?

Most social networking sites, including Facebook, have an option for the owner of the site to determine the audience through a kind of "permissions". If you allow the general public to read your site, there is still the question about the reliability of what the reader is reading. Sandra Starke put it nicely:

Sandra Starke, vice provost for enrollment management at Binghamton University, State University of New York, said, "Using social networking sites in the admissions process is somewhat of a sticky wicket! Looking into a site that a 16 or 17 year-old sees as somewhat private (even though it is quite public) is challenging. In many cases, students post things that are not true and cannot be validated in any way. [via Kaplan]

• criar transacções executivas periódicas de planeamento, decisão, implementação e controlo da estratégia.

It's not like I went to an SAT study group or anything, but I certainly would have sat around playing a game that would conceivably have dramatically raise my SAT scores.

With so much pressure on today's high schoolers to get high scores, these games seem like a no-brainer for any conscious parent. Come to think of it, I might have gotten into Harvard had they had a video game that was a cross between Contra and the SATs.

         Essay:Independent and Integrated Writing

       Strategy1, Organize thoughts (3 mins max)

 An Introduction to Writing an Essay   

1. Select the topic of your essay. 
2. Choose the central idea, or thesis, of your essay. For example:George Orwell's Animal Farm provides a fascinating allegory of life in a totalitarian society.   
3. Outline your essay into introductory, body and summary paragraphs. 
4. The introductory paragraph begins with an interesting sentence. For example:The idyllic setting of life on the farm provides little clue of the harsh realities George Orwell portrays in Animal Farm.  
5. After this first sentence, add your thesis statement from above. 
6. Use one sentence to introduce every body paragraph to follow. For example:Orwell's choice of pigs as the leaders of the farm can hardly be incidental.  
7. Finish the introductory paragraph with a short summary or goal statement. For example:George Orwell's Animal Farm fascinates the reader through its extreme contrast between the idyllic and brutally realistic.  
8. In each of the body paragraphs (usually two or three) the ideas first presented in the introductory paragraph are developed. 
9. Develop your body paragraphs by giving detailed information and examples. For example:The struggle between the two leading pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, with its consequences felt by the population of the farm clearly illustrates how totalitarian leaders will put their own confrontations ahead of the population they are supposedly leading.  
10. Body paragraphs should develop the central idea and finish with a summary of that idea. There should be at least two examples or facts in each body paragraph to support the central idea. 
11. The summary paragraph summarizes your essay and is often a reverse of the of the introductory paragraph. 
12. Begin the summary paragraph by quickly restating the principal ideas of your body paragraphs. For example:Through the use of symbolism in the portrayal of characters, setting and style, George Orwell's Animal Farm delivers a harsh criticism of totalitarian society.  
13. The penultimate sentence should restate your basic thesis of the essay. For example:Animal Farm is a deceivingly simple allegory presenting totalitarian society in all its grimmest aspects.  
14. Your final statement can be a future prediction based on what you have shown in the essay. For example:Considering the vast changes in the global political structure of the last twenty years, one can only hope that mankind has learned the lessons so elegantly told in George Orwell's Animal Farm.

In Quantitative, number properties, absolutes, remainders - these are much more crucial than the probability of pulling 2 red and 5 green marbles out of your ###. Not to mention that MGMAT still gives me a dismal success rate in number properties questions. I need more of integer n and his buddy k, it seems. (a nerdy joke: a math teacher begins to describe a problem in class - "So kids, we have n planes flying from point A... no, n is too large. We have k planes...")

In Verbal, it feels wrong to concentrate on only one of the three types of questions. This is the reason I did not buy the MGMAT sentence correction guide. That and because I didn't know buying the book would be cheaper than buying the CATs from the website. It is also wrong that SC is the only area where one can improve quickly. I was able to substantially improve my practice results in critical reasoning just by reading the stickies in Verbal forum in GMATClub. CR can be learned by studying the rules, just like SC.

In other news, MGMAT CATs went well this weekend. I even hit Q48 on Sunday, because the first 8-9 questions were DS and this gave me an good start. Verbal is stable, hovering somewhere in the low 40's. Next weekend, it's time for that great confidence killer, Kaplan.
