The path along the lake has a distance of 1.5 kilometers and by walking/jogging along the streets that surround the park, it has a distance of 1.6 kilometers or 1 mile. This picture was taken last September 2007 but the only difference now is that the lotus plants are gone.

I just want to run. Want to look up straight, shed my inhibitions, embrace the road in its solitude

I just want to run. Want to look up straight, shed my inhibitions, embrace the road in its solitude, keep breathing, listening to my heart beat - I want to run. As I run, I want to teach my legs the forgotten art of putting one foot in front of the other. It's as natural as a reflex. And yet it has managed to sink in oblivion.

While I run, I want to push myself to the limits. Want to set things in motion. Want to start a momentum in this otherwise static universe. And while I'm at it, I just want to enjoy the rush of blood. Inhaling the smell of my body as it begins to sweat. And as my muscles begin to tire, I just keep repeating the act of putting one foot in front of the other, like an insensitive machine, programmed to repeat the same commands again and again.

While I force my body to this, I experience a strange kind of bliss. As the noises of the street seems to disappear, the echo of my heart beat runs through my veins so loud and clear that my ears can grapple only that one sound. My eyes try to focus as it is threatened by the overflow of sweat which my eyebrows are struggling to keep a hold at. With every alternate step my body rises and falls. Rises and falls. Each time my body rises I feel that my spirit has been set free. And each time it falls I feel the stillness - necessary to take the next step.

As I slow down, exhausted and breathless, an unknown old lady rewards me with a smile. I humbly accept it and smile back at her. Maybe the gods have just acknowledged my act. As I retire, I learn that the past doesn't matter anymore. It's always the next step that counts.

I switched my routine from the Power 90x lean routine to Power 90x Doubles routine. why? Well, because along with my eyesight I have lost some brain cells along the way.

I thought with every cell in my being that I needed to push my self and add more cardio to my regimen. I do, really, if I want to get rid of the stuff that is covering what many have told me is the rectus abdominis aka six-pack to show, then I am going to have to do more cardio. Yuck! I hate to run. I don't have time to go to the base and get on the spin bike or treadmill. I know I have said this before in the "What was I thinking" post. Why can't I just shove an enama up my you know what and just get it over with? No, I couldn't do that, I guess I will just have to eat bushels of apples, or is that bundles of apples?

Well, I have gone running twice this week. Two times too many this year. I feel alot better and my shins are aren't talking to me as much. I guess that is good. Now, I was suppose to do my chest, shoulders and triceps on Monday also, but man I was really exhausted after my workout in the morning class. We really did work hard and I did not really want to because I knew I was suppose to do the Power 90x routine. I put it off. So, now I am behind and I did the routine today after my evening classes, which no one came for on Wednesday. Now, I will have to do the back and biceps tomorrow which was suppose to be just YogaX. Well, I have two Yoga classes to teach on Thurdady, so I will do those and figure out if I want to do the back and bicep routine after I have lunch with my friend. You know priorities. :)

I think I will do a little jogging tomorrow again, not too bad so I will keep it up. I will do my back and bicep routine. I really need to get my push-up routine going as well. When am I going to have time for all this blogging and working out? Urgh!

I do have a dead line and I am sticking to it. Just apples and yogurt. Oh, and I found an awesome protein drink too. it has a cinnamon taste to it. I love cinnamon.

No excuses.

Have been getting into the Nike + system over the last few days. I actually received this little gadget on my trip to Portland with Hiroshi for Honeyee.com in April. I never took it out of the box until recently. I started running near my house during the editing of Car Danchi 3, but still didn't take it out of the box. After finishing the editing I started running longer distances and really getting into it over the last two weeks. It has been a tough two weeks as the body is hating me every morning as I tie my shoes and head out the door. Now after two weeks of running everyday I am finally starting enjoy the experience and not feel so much pain! So I decided to bust the Nike+ out of the box. It is really a fun item. You put a sensor in your shoes and then wear the watch/wrist band that keeps track of your steps/time/pace etc., Then when you get home you can upload your run to the Nike+ web site and it gives you all the stats from your run. It also keep an archive of all your prior runs and helps you set goals and challenges with other people all kinds of stuff. I have never been much of a runner, but having the visual gratification seeing the stats and graph on the screen is pretty cool and gives some incentive to get out there and run some more! Pretty soon I will be wearing spandex and wrap around sunglasses with a sweatband for good measure! Not!

6:42 PM 22 July 2008

Before going to Echo Park, I did a run around an area covering two blocks within and near the house. One round has a distance of 850 meters and I did two rounds before finally going to Echo Park.

My plan for this workout was to run a conservative pace of 6:00-6:15 minutes per kilometer throughout my run with a goal of running 16 kilometers or 10 miles. I wanted to have a long and steady run to simulate my pace for the San Francisco Marathon and my incoming first ultra trail run next month. I want to control my pace and run consistently for the pace I set forth for this run. I could still accept 6:30 mins/km pace as my slowest pace for the run.

I brought my The North Face Hand-Strapped Water Jug which I carried using right hand for my hydration.

I decided to run along the sidewalk of the streets that surround Echo Park as the road along the lake was jampacked with lots of joggers, brisk walkers, and recreational bikers. There were few runners using the said sidewalk and the distance of one loop was 1.6 kilometers or 1 mile. Ten rounds along the loop is equivalent to 16 kilometers or 10 miles. After running for 10 kilometers, my GH 305 registered a time of 1:01:20 hours which was within the pace I set for the said run.

I was surprised to see that my son eventually joined me at the park after coming from his office. We ran together for about 400 meters but I told him to leave me and maintain his speed for his own workout. He went ahead and did his run. I did another 8K and my son joined me back to the house.

Distance---18.01 kms Time---1:55:05 Pace---6:24 mins/km

7:30 PM 21 July 2008 (Los Angeles)

7:30 PM 21 July 2008 (Los Angeles)

My son, John, and I had our gym workout at Gold's Gym at Downtown, Los Angeles which is 5-10 minutes drive from the house.

Using my "travel pass" (which I requested days before my departure from Manila) from Gold's Gym Glorietta, my entry to the facility was fast and efficient. The people at the Gym just told me to sign-in my name & signature on a tabulated form. Thanks, Emil for the "travel pass".

I did my dumbbell exercises with my arms and chest. I used also some of the machines for my abdominals and back muscles and later for my leg muscles. I did a lot of lunges with 25-lbs dumbbels on my hands. No cardio machines this time as my workout was focused to the bigger muscles of my body, most especially my legs.

Before going to the gym last Monday (while at home), I did 6 X 15 reps Push-Ups using the Nike Push-Up Grips which my son bought and recommended as part of our home workout. I did the push-ups with at least 15- minute rest interval between sets (while reading the LA Times). The Nike Push-Up Grips really work as you can extend your body drop all the way to the floor with more resistance. I am recommending this simple gadget to all the runners.

We ended our workout with a set of machines which I haven't seen in any of the Gold's Gym in Manila and I did not mind getting the name/brand of the machine. The machines isolate each muscle group using small weights with string attach to the set of weights. I like the machine that strengthens the ankles.

We finished our workout in 2 1/2 hours and walking to the parking area was our cool-down exercise.

I jogged for more than 6km today - and did 5km yesterday! Sprained my knee pretty bad while cycling

I jogged for more than 6km today - and did 5km yesterday! Sprained my knee pretty bad while cycling uphill last week - yes, that knee - but the pretty bad swelling went down after a few days of icing and muscle rubs.

Got rather upset with having to limp about again, brought back memories of bad times and not being able to get about without troubling everyone around me. But thankfully now am more or less fine; am doubly thankful for the friends whom I've spoken to and offered kind words.

But today's 6km run was pretty important to me. I ran this route, in addition to running around the Humber Bay Park East.

[googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=6647628289230147841,43.629270,-79.475600%3B14530782274266028873,43.637080,-79.469740&saddr=43.622252,-79.475999&daddr=Windermere+Ave+%4043.637080,+-79.469740&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=15&doflg=ptk&sll=43.62657,-79.473081&sspn=0.012892,0.026264&ie=UTF8&ll=43.62657,-79.473081&spn=0.012892,0.026264&output=embed&s=AARTsJoQcbsNEoZT3AwjKE8XLhrjyQ94AQ&w=425&h=350]

At the start of the summer less than a kilometre winded me. Today, if not for having to watch out for not pushing my sodding knee too hard, I felt like I coulda gone on forever. Maybe I'll try running to HarbourFront and back, heh. Definitely by the end of summer I want to be able to do that - be able to run 10+ km at a go! Guess I'll start by trying to reach Ontario Place first, heh heh.

Guess I never really appreciated how fun running about was until I nearly lost the ability - had I realized this earlier all those 2.4km runs back during Raffles Institution basketball training would've been just that more fun. They were fun to begin with though - I hadn't ever, and haven't since, had to run a 2.4km all-out race with the intention of "beating the guy in front of you, and the next guy, and the guy after that". Under our coach, you ran at your limit every single step of the way. On hindsight, that really did prepare me for the rigours of, well, everything.

Was going to write about certain other things, certain much more serious things but have decided not to. The people in my life who need to know already do. Plus I'm really exhausted. Nonetheless, I made a promise over the weekend to protect something very special at all costs, something I'm increasingly beginning to realize is the most important thing of all.

So before I start rambling and making McCain-esque gaffes, good night and God bless everyone and everything.

huahh.. minggu pagi yang cerah.. Sepertinya enak buat jogging ato sekedar jalan2 ke senayan. Udah 2 minggu ga jogging lagi disana. Soalnya abis pulkam minggu lalu. Ngajarin motor aja bareng sindhuk..

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="383" caption="senayan"][/caption]

Acara inti yaitu olahraga ga kesampaian, selain udah penuh orang berputar2 aku bingung sendiri, kau buat aku jadi pusing..

:) hehehe. Sayangnya Planetarium agak kurang dioptimalkan, banyak ruang kosong disudut2 ruangan.. Yah, mungkin astronot Indonesia perlu difasilitasi pesawat ulangalik biar maju.

Sampe rumah.. blek.. capeeekk..

July 22, 2008

I’m quickly learning that running 5K a day isn’t really a problem. It’s finding time to squeeze in at least 3.1 miles a day that is proving a bit difficult. This week is really putting me to the test.

Starting tonight, I will be commuting back and forth from work and to the city - which wouldn’t normally be a problem. But between the city and the suburbs, I need to work and sleep. Then I have a plethora of activities in the evening. You know - the actual ‘living life to the fullest’ part of life. It all starts this evening with dinner plans.

But I was smart enough and got up extra early to run. Go me!

Unfortunately, since I will be leaving for work from the city tomorrow I won’t be able to run beforehand…unless I get up before 6. And that is not going to happen. Usually, I have training on Wednesdays, but with this being the Wednesday before the ½ marathon we are foregoing in to tape some interviews for the news. (Yes, I am famous) That is fine because right after that, I have to rush to a bar to meet up with my friends. Then we are all going to see George Michael at MSG. And I can’t be sweaty for that!

So, when can I run tomorrow? Well, after running scenarios through my mind I have decided I can leave work a bit early, run before I head to the city and still have time to do my interview and concert. Seems like a lot of running around though, huh? No pun intended.

Now, if I make it through tomorrow I have Thursday to deal with. Again, I will be travelling from the city to work. I need to work until 5:30 and then rush off back to the city to get to Jamey’s so we can then get to our hustle dancing class. That doesn’t end until almost 9 and though I could run then, I’d rather not.

I believe I devised another successful plan.

When I come back to NJ on Thursday morning, instead of taking the bus directly to work, I will take the train to my apartment. I only live a couple miles from work. By going to my apartment, I can get my car and drive to work. Then during lunch hour, I can drive home, punch out a good 5K, shower and then make it back to the job before anyone missed me.

And if I pull that off, I will consider myself amazing.

So as you can see, it’s not all the running every day that is getting to me. It’s all the running around to make the running happen that is driving me crazy! But, what is the alternative? Giving up?

NEVER!!!

Besides, it’s rather fun. Almost like my own personal “Amazing Race.” Pun intended.

22 5Ks down. 343 to go.

-Qraig

July 21, 2008

Even though I didn’t blog all weekend, I can gladly report that I finished at least a 5K on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here’s a quick ‘run’ down.

Friday July 18th – HOT! Knocked out about 5 miles at the broiling track after work. I was the only one there.

Saturday July 19th – HOT in the city! Waited until 5:00pm to run. Went down by the East River all the way to South Street Seaport and back again. Less crowded than normal and very few people were partaking in physical activity. It felt so good to sweat though.

Sunday July 20th – HOT even at 10am! Wanted to get up early and complete a leisurely 5K at the track before my outlet mall bargain shopping trip to Woodbury Commons in Central Valley, NY. Ended up getting up late and trying to rush through my 5K. Again, I was the only one there feeling more like a piece of steak under a broiler than a runner…but it pumped me up for my major shopping spree! I probably completed a few more walking 5Ks browsing through all the outlet stores.

I did want to get some new running shoes this weekend. I failed on that. Unless I start running in these awesome faux purple snake skin Puma I totally scored a deal on. I’m not thinking that would be wise though.

So, tonight’s run will mark 3 weeks of running 5Ks. My prediction for tonight’s run? Hot as a mofo! And probably no more than a 5K as I have the NYC ½ Marathon this coming Sunday and I need to get my legs ready for it. Too much running will hurt my chances of winning. And when I say winning, I mean finishing!

-Qraig

Brian Fantana: So the team pancake breakfast is tomorrow morning at nine, instead of eight.
Ron Burgundy: Oop... I almost forgot. I won't be able to make it fellas. Veronica and I trying this new fad called uh, jogging. I believe it's jogging or yogging. it might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.

In an effort to break past the 170-pound barrier and lost a few more pounds, I'm going to try jogging 2-3 miles each of the three days I go to the gym during the week instead of walking on an incline for a half-hour those three days.

Hopefully that also gives me the impetus to kick the smoking habit for good. If I'm running, smoking just isn't conducive to that. It actually worked for me a few months ago, but then I pulled the muscles around my right achilles tendon and I couldn't do much of any cardio for awhile. Then, I started smoking pretty heavily again. So let's hope my tendons are strong haha.

Saw Dark Knight this past weekend--amazing! And I'm so glad Maggie Gyllenhaal was in the movie, because I love her. There's just something about her ... can't quite put my finger on it. But seriously go out and watch it if you have a chance. I'm normally not a fan of superhero movies, and I didn't see any of the previous Batman flicks, but this one was totally worth my $8.25.

Busy week this week with two print items and three Web news stories due. Hopefully I can keep my sanity and plow through it all as per usual.

“Was that a rock? Who hit me in the back of the head with a rock? If that homeless man outside the YMCA throwing rocks in the street hit me, so help me …” I turn around.

“Oh crap.” I duck …

I admire lunchtime joggers. That’s true dedication. I especially admire the ones that jog daily. If I exercise more than once a month, I call that healthy living.

I’m not a fatty-fatty two-by-four, but when I turned 30-years-old and started a desk job, it added some weight. It’s time to get back in shape and start a new habit.

It was noon on Monday. A humid summer day. The first day of the week. The first day of my new lifestyle. I joined the lunchtime joggers.

Like most people, I drove to my jogging destination. I didn’t want to waste my energy jogging to my jogging location.

I park near 8th and Cincinnati.

I step out of my car. Cell phone in left hand. iPod in right. Keys in … no pockets. Ok, cell phone and keys in left hand. iPod in right.

Oh yeah, my wallet. If I’m killed or die of heat stroke, the authorities will need a way to identify my body.

Cell phone and keys in left hand. iPod and wallet in the right. I start my jog, jogging north on Cincinnati Avenue.

It’s good to be outdoors. This is nice. Fresh air. Well, fresh-ish air. It smells like new asphalt and grease. I’m sure it’s safe to breathe.

I make it to 7th and Cincinnati before I need break.

I walk a few more blocks. I spot a possible homeless person walking toward me. I jayjog across the street. I get a better look at him and realize he’s African-American. Great, now I look racist. I'm not.

I pick up the pace and jog into road construction. The sidewalk is a dead-end. I have two options. Neither one feels safe. My choices are: 1. Possible knife-wielding thug that may think I'm racist, or 2. Family of hillbillies at the bus depot.

I choose the bus depot.

I move my wallet to left hand, and my keys to the right. I make a dagger with my keys. It’s something I saw on Oprah.

With key dagger in hand, I casually walk through the bus depot.

I smile and nod.

“Hi. Hello. Enjoy your trip.”

That was close.

I’m back on 3rd street, one block away from Yaw Eno.

I pass Yaw Eno. Still standing.

Outside the Double Tree Hotel, protestors hand out fliers. I don’t know what they’re protesting, and I don’t care. All I care is the man handing fliers is African-American. I can make up for the jayjogging incident from a minute earlier.

“Would you like a flier?”

Decided to buy some new shoes for my upcoming trip to Russia. Went to "shugakusou" the outdoor shop here in Sapporo, but couldn't find anything I like. Travel shoes are tricky. Comfortable, breathable, yet something that could be worn to a decent resturant and not look like I just came back from a mountain climb. Ended up at the local Nike store and found a cool looking pair or shoes called the Rejuven8. They come with two inners that can be exchanged and a bag to hold everything in. I only found out when I got home that the shoes went on sale on the 19th, which is the day I bought them. I don't think I have ever bought anything on the day it was released! I am not that crazy of a shopper. Anyway went for the green and black combo, very comfortable so far.

Last weekend was the Knysna half marathon. I had been looking forward to this race since I booked

Last weekend was the Knysna half marathon. I had been looking forward to this race since I booked for it in April already (the party vibe is awesome so many people do this run). Last year I was at the race but since I wasn't a runner at that stage, I only managed the 5km - this year I planned on running with my friend Mary who was running her first 21km.

I had been warned about how cold it would be at the start, which is in the Knysna forest. Cold didn't really cut it - FREEZING seems more appropriate!!! I lost the feeling in my baby toes, something I haven't felt since I worked in an American ski resort in New Hampshire where minus 30 was considered warm...

It was great running in a race again, it had been a month since the Comrades and I was a little worried that I would have lost some of my fitness - turns out I hadn't - half way came so fast it had me laughing out loud!

Mary did a great time (I don't think I'm the best partner to run with if its your first time - I'm not very understanding it seems), coming in at 2:20 which is great for a first time!

As I said in my previous post, I'm in the process of finalizing the last few donations and then I'll give everyone the update...

you’re a smoker “in accordance with a package a day” from what you do not measure blood pressure?
Already have a good chance of suffering from HIPERTENSIVE

your doctors advise stop smoking, regular life, a good diet, sports, jogging or walking 20 minutes a day, and if your blood pressure not haul to normal levels then you prescribe a pill per day which may be an antihypertensive drug beta - blocker, a diuretic calcium or other drugs of “new generation” but who will need to take for the rest of your life

They are nice reading materials to those who would be interested in trail running and eventually join trail road races in the future.

Which makes them appealing, but also a bit intimidating. Fear not. Here's everything you need to know.

                                                                                 By Martin Dugard
PUBLISHED 08/08/2002

Some researchers believe that each of us has an instinctive need called biophilia -- a longing to be one with nature. Biophilia is why sitting on a park bench for 15 minutes can produce such contentment and stress release. It's what makes us look out the window wistfully when stuck inside on a sunny day.

And it's the only possible explanation for golf's enormous success.

Biophilia is also a major reason why trail running has become so popular. Bounding along a woodsy trail induces calmness while improving leg strength, coordination and body awareness.

Maybe that's why trail-race participation numbers are way up. Once synonymous with "fringe" running and high-altitude events, trail races now tend to be shorter -- 5-Ks, 5-milers, sometimes 10-milers -- and more accessible. The degree of difficulty has decreased, too, with many courses now looping through urban parks and along gentle nature trails. Aid stations are commonplace, and women are just as likely to compete in these events as men.

That said, trail races haven't become so easy that you don't need to train for them. Trail running requires more total-body fitness and a better sense of running technique than running on the roads. Trail tactics are vital, too, as is knowledge of the terrain you're likely to encounter. Here's everything you need to know:

Practice Makes Perfect

This much is true: If you want your inaugural trail race to feel natural (flowing over hill and dale) instead of calamitous (bouncing off trees and tripping over exposed roots), you must train on trails. Three months before your first race -- after buying a good pair of trail shoes -- try to spend two training sessions per week running off-road.

If you've never been a trail runner, you'll notice some differences immediately. A trail surface is never perfectly smooth, so you can't run with a perfect stride. A trail invariably undulates, which makes it harder to find a running rhythm. A trail has low branches and overgrown bushes, which means constant ducking and dodging.

At first, these differences can make trail running seem exhausting. There's much more lateral movement (as opposed to linear), which requires greater use of peripheral muscles around the ankles and hips and in the quadriceps and glutes. While you may feel tired after only a few minutes of trail running, time and practice will improve your stamina.

Among other things, you'll be learning where to place your feet to avoid a fall, how to take turns more efficiently, which plants to dodge and which to brush harmlessly past. It's running in a more primal fashion than many of us are used to.

The Long and Short of It

Trail races are equal parts strength and speed. So as you build up to the big race, incorporate longer, slower runs as well as shorter, faster runs into your program.

Long run: Develop endurance and leg strength by shifting your weekly long run from roads to trails. To prepare for any race shorter than a 10-K, plan a long run that lasts around 60 minutes. For a 10-K or longer, work up to 90 minutes or more. Don't feel discouraged if you're running slower than you do on the roads; that's just the nature of trails.

Speedwork: A good trail racer possesses two forms of speed: leg speed and trail speed. Alternate the following two types of speed-training sessions every week as you prepare for your trail race.

1. "Leg speed" is that flat-out turnover of your legs, and it's best developed on the track, not the trail. You'll increase stride efficiency, sense of pace and anaerobic threshold by doing a weekly set of 6 to 8 x 400 meters or 3 to 4 x 800 meters at slightly faster than race pace. If the track just isn't your bag, try doing some hill work. Start with 4 to 6 repeats of a 200- to 400-meter hill, eventually working up to 8 or 10.

2. "Trail speed" is the ability to run at race pace over varying terrain. This is best accomplished with a 30- to 45-minute fartlek run on a trail that's not too rugged. (The term fartlek, or "speed play," was coined by the Swedes to describe speedwork on trails.)

Make it fun. Sprint from tree to tree. Run fast up a hill and jog the backside, or vice versa. There are no rules to fartlek workouts, only that one must push hard playfully. You'll work hard, but it won't feel like it. And you'll learn a lot about trail running in the process.

Cross-Training

Developing your quads and glutes through weight training and cycling (either on a stationary bike or mountain bike) will give you more power when running uphill and more strength late in the race. Also, you'll strengthen the ligaments and muscles around your knee, protecting it from torque-related injuries or sprains.

Weights: Doing sets of squats, hamstring curls, quadriceps extensions and calf raises will help you the most. If your gym has a Butt Blaster machine, try it out. I've found that it perfectly imitates the leg movement of uphill running by isolating the glutes and upper leg muscles.

Cycling: Mimic the running motion by standing up in the saddle when climbing hills. Mountain biking is also a great way to scout out new trails, as you're able to stay out longer with less effort.

Tactics and Techniques

As you train, think about staying light on your feet. Run as if on eggshells. Also, resist the tendency to favor one leg over the other. A lot of runners start using one leg as the "plant" leg to land heavily on and the other as the "drive" or "push-off" leg. Each leg should do these actions interchangeably. Some other tactics to remember:

Downhills: Run on the balls of your feet, not on your heels. This means less pounding, more speed and greater control.

Uphills: Shorten your stride, and keep your head up and chest forward. Run relaxed and try to find a rhythm that will take you up and over each hill with relative ease.

Corners: To a greater extent than on the roads, trails offer the chance to round a corner and "hide." Practice bursts of speed when turning corners. Competitors won't see you accelerate, and will experience a mental letdown when they see you've "gapped" them. Include this maneuver as a regular part of your fartlek workout.

Streams: It's possible to cross a stream while barely wetting your feet. All you have to do is high-step across as quickly as possible, allowing your feet to touch down only for a fraction of a second. Try it. And don't be afraid to run right through a stream. Too many competitors lose time by halting at the edge of a stream midrace.

A Trails Primer

Every type of trail offers unique challenges. Here are some of the more common trail surfaces, with tips on navigating them:

Sand. Sand is never easy to run on, especially when the weather's been hot and dry and the sand is loose. An experienced trail runner often flits down a sandy trail (as opposed to running in a straight line), always searching for the firmest footing. Typically you'll find the hardest-packed sand -- and the fastest line -- on the very edge of the trail.

Mud. For all-around annoyance, nothing beats running down a muddy trail. It's dirty, there's a greater chance of slipping, and mud tends to stick to your shoes, making them heavy. So look closely -- and react. Shiny mud is invariably wet and liable to suck you in. Mud with a dull appearance is usually firmer and faster to run on.

Rocky terrain. Step lively here, using a higher leg lift to avoid tripping. Concentrate hard and choose footing carefully to keep from twisting your ankle.

Forest paths. Deceptively beautiful, forest paths are often covered with leaves that hide tripping hazards such as rocks, roots and holes. Wooded areas also tend to retain moisture, so trails can be slick. As with rocky paths, pay close attention to foot placement.

What to Expect on Race Day

A trail race can be quite different from a road race. Some words of wisdom regarding race day:

First of all, wear those trail shoes. They're light enough for racing, but offer the lateral support you need to keep your feet and ankles more stable. Also, a trail shoe has a heavier tread pattern than a road shoe, and offers a toe "bumper" to protect you from bruising.

Start slowly. In essence, a trail race is a whole bunch of people trying to squeeze onto a skinny trail. Which may make you want to start out fast to beat the crowds. Don't. This will only send you into oxygen debt and sap the energy you'll need later in the race -- when everyone else is tiring.

Stay loose. As the race progresses, you'll find a rhythm. Imagine yourself as nimble and light-footed as Fred Astaire. In this relaxed state, you'll be less likely to fall and more apt to maintain speed.

Above all, have fun. Trail racing is the most natural form of racing. Indeed, we feel like children as we run through the forest. It's playtime, and we're called to it.

I've sort of failed at blogging for a couple weeks. Though, I've failed at lots of thing for a couple of weeks. One includes working out, but I'm back onto that. The last three days I've done a bit over a mile between walking and jogging. I have a good system worked out at the Huff'N'Puff now. Once I have a bit more endurance, I hope to find a friend to go with me, but at this point I don't know of anyone at my level. When I'm jogging on my treadmill, I have a longer endurance length than when I'm on the trails, but I might be going faster on the trails, because they seem shorter, but the time of the treadmill and trails are about the same I think, and the distance of the trails is technically a bit over a mile. Going around three times is atleast, 4 times is barely over 1.5 miles. I'll have to just time it next time, and recalculate. But my knee hasn't been hurting at all which is good, and my Metatarsalgia is bareable.

Today, I saw Mamma Mia! I really liked it. Who knew the actress who played Karen in Mean Girls (Amanda Seyfried) could sing... Tomorrow, I am seeing The Dark Knight with Tia (and her friend I think?) and then going to Lakefair with them. I for some reason missed it last year. I bet rides are going to be ridiculous, because of gas prices and all. Good thing I don't really like them that much.

(Notiz an mich Selbst: Steigung + Tempo = Urk!).

Here we go:

Strecke: 10,1 km
Zeit: 1:03 h (= 9,62 km/h bzw. 6:14 min/km)
