Każdy szanujący się amator jazdy na dwóch kółkach powinien wiedzieć, że Katowice i okolice są wyśmienitym miejscem do spędzania wolnego czasu na rowerze. Głównie za sprawą ogromnych terenów leśnych. Tak, tak – śląskie lasy to powód do dumy.
Poniżej postaram się opisać kilka ciekawych miejsc, w których warto pojeździć.

Dolina Trzech Stawów.
Ten piękny, duży park znajduje się w dzielnicy Osiedle Paderewskiego-Muchowiec. Park zawdzięcza nazwę zbiornikom wodnym, które się w nim znajdują. Dolina jest idealnym miejscem do rekreacyjnej jazdy rowerem. Nadaje się na weekendowe rodzinne wycieczki rowerowe i nie tylko. Liczne ścieżki rowerowe, które przebiegają przez park pozwalają rozkoszować się przyrodą. A jest, czym nacieszyć oko. Oprócz drzew, krzewów, polnych kwiatków dostrzec można chroniony w Polsce grążel żółty oraz inne rośliny wodne. Dolina jest też ostoją wielu gatunków żab, które lubią skakać po ścieżkach.

Park im. Tadeusza Kościuszki w Katowicach.
Park dla miłośników kwiatów. Jadąc alejami na pewno zobaczysz róże, rododendrony, azalie. Najliczniejsze drzewa występujące w parku to brzozy i sosny, jednak inne drzewa takie jak buki, klony także występują. Podczas jazdy towarzyszyć będą Ci śpiewy ptaków. Rozglądaj się dookoła, a na pewno zobaczysz skaczące po gałęziach drzew rude wiewiórki, które upodobały sobie ten park. Osoby, które interesują się historią Polski uwagę zwrócą na jedyną, istniejącą w Polsce wieżę spadochronową.

Katowicki Park Leśny.
Rozciąga się od centralnej części Katowic po południowe dzielnice. Obejmuje on dzielnice takie jak Muchowiec, Brynów, Giszowiec, Ochojec. Z Parkiem Kościuszki i Lasem Murckowskim tworzy jedną wielką zieloną przestrzeń Katowic. Park ten upodobały sobie ptaki. Usłyszeć jak i zobaczyć można w nim sikory, bażanty, zięby, puszczyki. Nad głowami mogą nam przelecieć nietoperze, a drogę przeciąć stado saren. W gąszczu zobaczyć można także płochliwe dziki.

Rezerwat przyrody Ochojec.
Wchodzi w skład Lasów Murckowskich. Położony jest w dolinie rzeki Ślepiotki. Na terenie rezerwatu znajduje się mnóstwo roślin chronionych między innymi konwalia majowa, kalina koralowa. Rezerwat upodobały sobie bażanty, kruki oraz jastrzębie. Między drzewami zobaczyć możemy dziki, sarny, daniele.

Rezerwat przyrody Las Murckowski.
Jest on pozostałością Puszczy Śląskiej. Leży w południowych dzielnicach Katowic – Murkach i Kostuchnie. Obiektami wyróżniającymi ten rezerwat są wiekowe buki. Drzewa te swoją wielkością wprawiają w zachwyt każdego, który ma okazję być w rezerwacie. W lesie tym możemy spotkać tak jak w wyżej wymienionych rezerwatach jelenie, dziki. Także kilka roślin chronionych takich jak śnieżyczka przebiśnieg czy bluszcz pospolity.

Gdzie ja jestem?
Takie pytanie zada sobie osoba, która po raz pierwszy będzie miała okazję jeździć rowerem po katowickich lasach. Dlaczego? Dlatego, że obszary zielone tworzą jedną wielką całość, która tylko czasami poprzecinana jest drogami szybkiego ruchu albo torami kolejowymi. Osoby, które swoją wycieczkę rowerową zaczną w Dolinie Trzech Stawów, po chwili będą w Lesie Murckowskim, po drodze przejeżdżając przez Rezerwat Ochojec. Podczas jazdy towarzyszyć im będzie śpiew ptaków i gra promieni słonecznych, które w pogodne dni próbują przedostać się przez soczyście zielone korony drzew. To wszystko sprawia, że wjeżdżając w las nie chce się wracać do domu.

Katowice, Katowice, Katowice, a co oprócz tego?
Po kilkunastu wycieczkach rowerowych stwierdzimy, że dość dobrze znamy większość szlaków i ścieżek. Warto byłoby pomyśleć nad dalszą wyprawą.
Katowickie lasy są idealnym punktem startowym do dalszych wycieczek rowerowych. Jadąc odpowiednimi ścieżkami w Lesie Murckowskim (na trasie znajdują się oznakowania) dotrzeć możemy do Lędzin, z których to w łatwy sposób dostaniemy się do Imielina nad zalew „Dziećkowice” gdzie możemy chwilę odpocząć.
Wjeżdżając w las, który znajduje się w Kostuchnie (południowa dzielnica Katowic granicząca z Murckami, Podlesiem, Piotrowicami) możemy dotrzeć do Podlesia, a stamtąd szlakiem rowerowym dojechać do Pszczyny. Dobrym pomysłem jest także dojechanie nad Zbiornik Goczałkowicki, aby tam posilić się i odpocząć. Najbardziej wytrawni kolaże górscy mogą podjąć się trasy prowadzącej do Wisły (korzystając z szlaku prowadzącego do Pszczyny, a potem od Pszczyny Wiślańskim Szlakiem Rowerowym).

Kask na głowę i w drogę…
Jak widzisz, Górny Śląsk, a w szczególności Katowice wraz z dzielnicami są idealnym miejscem na rowerowe wycieczki. Podczas jazdy samotność nie będzie Ci doskwierać, ponieważ oprócz Ciebie na ścieżkach będzie mnóstwo innych osób kochających rower. W trasę warto wziąć z sobą aparat fotograficzny, okazji do zrobienia świetnego zdjęcia nie będzie brakować.

Tak, więc, nie pozostaje Ci nic innego jak wsiąść na swój rower i cieszyć oko malowniczymi zakątkami Katowic. Gwarantuję Ci, że wjeżdżając raz w katowickie lasy będziesz chciał do nich wracać za każdym razem, gdy będziesz mieć okazję.
Nie ważne czy wiosną, latem jesienią czy zimą, po katowickich lasach można jeździć cały rok i czerpać z tego ogromną radość.

I heard a fairly loud rustling in the bushes but couldn't see what was making it. Arming myself with a torch, camera and wife we set off in search of the culprit and soon found him heading across a grassy patch at what seemed like a pretty good lick. Before I had a chance to take a shot he had hidden himself at the base of a conifer.

Ja pišem blog, tripujem ja sam dete buducnosti, čita me šaka jada i nisam high class. Tripujem, upisaću magistraturu blejanja dok se može, a kraj je blizu, uveseljavaću šaku jada sto više budem mogao, zaposliću se u administraciji, Mozda odem u Prag, sa Tinom, ako me ukenja. Kada se vratim, obesiće me na Terazijama jer sam NATO plaćenik. Bukvalno! Jer ceo Prag je za džabe ako prodjem.

Powiem krótko: jestem zauroczony. :) Od pierwszego momentu, kiedy naszym oczom ukazuje galaktyka, gra nie przestaje zaskakiwać. Ma w sobie coś ze starych produkcji, które były nastawione na innowacyjność. Ma w sobie coś takiego, co cały czas nas zaciekawia, sprawiając, że nie chcemy odejść od komputera. :)

Faza Komórki

Tutaj Spore jest prostą grą zręcznościową o nieskomplikowanych zasadach: jedz, uciekaj przed tymi, którzy chcą zjeść ciebie, rozwijaj się. Gra na tym etapie jest po prostu śliczna. Przepiękne tła, które wraz ze wzrostem naszej komórki, stają się grywalne. Moje listkowce zaczęły swoją historię od żabczanów, prostych roślinożernych płazowatych istot.

Faza Stwora

Zabawna gra w moim wypadku w nawiązywanie przyjaźni z okolicznymi stadami i poszukiwanie nowych elementów ewolucyjnych. Wszystko zaczyna się od sceny, kiedy nasze stworzonka w końcu opuszczają pramorze i uzbrojone w nogi są gotowe podbić (kiedyś) całą galaktykę. 

Jest to też najbardziej problematyczna część Spore z tego względu, że w tej fazie musimy zdecydować jak nasz spore będzie wyglądał. Można spędzić naprawdę dużo czasu szukając odpowiedniego wyglądu, czy ubarwienia. Dopracowany stwór daje ogromną satysfakcję. 

Na samym początku tej fazy moje stworzonka były jeszcze odrobinę płazowate, ale powoli zaczęły zmieniać się w stronę bardziej ssako-podobnej istoty. Chciałem zachować pewną płynność w ewolucji i dobrze się przy tym bawiłem, rozmyślając jak listkowiec może ewoluować. Np. Listek na ogonie powoli przerodził się w małe skrzydełko, które pozwoliło listkowcą wznieść się w powietrze. Stąd też wzięła się ich nazwa. :)

Jednym z najzabawniejszych momentów było lądowanie statku kosmicznego (stworzonego przeze mnie - Pudełkodromu). Wielki prezent latający nad polanami i porywający zwierzęta. :) Natomiast moim ulubionym stworzeniem, z którym udało mi się nawiązać porozumienie jest niewątpliwie Rybokula.

Faza Plemienia

Pierwsza faza, w której przyjdzie nam sterować poczynaniami większej ilości stworów. Rozpoczyna się od fenomenalnego nawiązania do Odysei Kosmicznej 2001.  Tylko patyk(kość) nie poleciał tak wysoko jak w filmie. :D To, co naprawdę zwróciło moją uwagę to muzyka. Wspaniałe tribalowe rytmy czyniły grę wyjątkowo przyjemną i mimo tego, że inni narzekali na tą fazę, to mi bardzo się podobała.

Listkowce nabrały teraz charakteru i przywdziały plemienne łachy, a niedługo później zaczęły podbijać okoliczne plemiona. Wyłącznie drogą pokojową.  Wioskowy zespół muzyczny zrobił furorę i już niedługo Listkowce rządziły niepodzielnie. Faza jest do zrobienia w pół godziny, ale jeśli zaczniemy się ociągać lub starać się się rozwiązywać konflikty na więcej niż jeden sposób, to może potrwać znacznie dłużej. 

Podczas tej fazy natknąłem się na mieszkających w lesie przedstawicieli rasy Turgoris Petitus. Kosmicznych jeży na razie ani widu ani słychu. ;)

O fazie cywilizacji napiszę jak już ją skończę.

Coincidently, yesterday I briefly caught up with a friend who gave me an amazing book called "Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration,"  by Troy Paiva, a superb photographer. He finds abandoned military bases, hotels, towns and takes astonishing night time shots on really long exposures, so atmospheric. The book is an absolute thing of beauty, Chronicle Books clearly knowing how to present these photographs in the best possible manner. All this reawakened a memory, jogging it loose from the silt in my mind and sending it bubbling up through my consciousness. Many years ago I used to ride the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust annual bike ride. The idea was that one would visit as many churches as possible in one day, an attendant at each building would sign your sponsor form (or you would sign the visitors' book if there was no one there) to prove you had been there. You would be sponsored an amount per church that you visited. In my latter teenage years I took to riding with Dave Mitchinson and George Knighton, who I worked with on Freegrove farm, hauling bales, herding cattle, clearing ditches and, (God preserve me from ever having to do this again) picking potatoes. One summer we set out on the annual church cycle ride along routes often followed by the members of the Highway Cycle Group. Foxham, Spirt Hill, Sutton Benger, seemingly hill after hill after hill, rolling up and down. For long hours the only signs of life were cows lazily chewing up against the hedges and swallows swooping along scant inches above the scorching tarmac. It was a blazing hot day, the distant hills and patchwork fields were laced with haze, micro-mirages of puddles formed in the road ahead of us, rippling in the air before evaporating before our eyes as we laboured up the slopes of the steepest hills North Wiltshire could throw at us. I think it was Dave, who after guiding us into the tiny church at Bradenstoke, took us on a detour down a farm track dusted with powered white clay-soil to the ruins of Bradenstoke Abbey. Approaching the old farm there, we experienced a frisson of excitement. None of us really knew if we were on a public right of way (we weren't), the tyres seemed unnaturally loud as we freewheeled over the chippings towards a rotted, wooden five bar gate sagging pathetically on its hinges. We hid the bikes in a tangle of weeds behind a low ruined wall before slinking down an avenue of ancient lime trees to where a doorway stood, or at least the stone arch of what was once a doorway. Then we lowered ourselves into what we assumed were the vaults, choked with brickwork and stone piled in the centre of the room. Dust danced in fierce shafts of sunlight that illuminated the ruins, we hardly dared to speak, tense whispers were all we could manage to raise. Then climbing up the rubble and out the other side, nearly falling down a well hidden in the ivy and ground elder on our way to the tower. Dave, being the smallest, but also the most flexible and speedy climbed quite a way into the tower, owl pellets were scattered at the entrance and up above we could hear the beating of wings. Dave came down, pretty quickly. Here and there a collapsed wall revealed a glassless window where we could peer into the stygian darkness below ground, still, quiet, air, reeking of musty stone, disquieting blackness. Out into the long, dry stalks of grass and wild barley. Chirruping grasshoppers leaping out of our path as we struggled back towards the bikes, sunburn prickling on our arms as we wheeled them past the seemingly deserted farmhouse. Then mounting up and riding away down the dusty track in a rattle of mudguards and loose chains, back towards civilization and the prospect of a ice cold bottle of cola from the stores in Lyneham.

Strangely enough, the abbey was not ruined that long ago. American newspaper baron Randolph Hearst had a thing for British historical buildings. He bought the Abbey and had it taken down brick by brick, either to be shipped to America or his castle in Wales depending on which version you hear. Legend has it that a warehouse somewhere still contains unopened crates of the bricks and stone. I've found it quite difficult to track down some images. Since I rode to the abbey that summer, it has changed hands and the present owners are doing a lot of work to restore it. It is not on public view though apparently one can walk past on some public rights of way. I visited a few years back and the owners gave permission for me to have a look round. sadly, but also sensibly, the vaults were boarded up with keep out signs everywhere.

The tower can be seen on the ridge at the back of Lyneham and Bradenstoke that faces the M4, the trainline from Bristol to Swindon runs even closer.

Przesuwa się, przegwieżdża. Sierpień przez palce przecieka, klei się na opuszkach palców, rozwala kolana na kocich łbach i śpi po sadach w przepierzeniu brzemiennych wiśni. Dni są do siebie podobne, jak korale z jarzębiny na szyi nieletnich panien uganiających sie za nieletnimi chłopcami i ich furgonetkami z plastiku. Traktuję ten czas trochę z przymrużeniem oka. Wychodzę po mleku do sklepu, w ręku trzymając list od najlepszej przyjaciółki i pochylając się nad poligonem literek kluczę między blokami do tegoż mojegoż osiedlowego sklepu nadziewając się na ogrodzenia i krzaki, które podszczypują mnie i gryzą, cholernie, namiętnie, a niech mnie.
Wieczorami zagapiam się w zachodzenie słońca i od lat już marzę o lodach robionych z tego wąskiego przesmyku dnia, w którym świat należy do wróżek.

Ostatnio miałam w pokoju ćmę, wielką i włochatą; pulsującą nocą i natrętnym światłem lampki, które wzywało ją na pokuszenie. Dawałam jej trzy szanse na ucieczkę, ona jednak wypięła się na ten czuły gest serca i postanowiła osrać wszystkie moje książki. Zdzieliłam ją jedyną, słuszną, opiniotwórczą gazetą w. tym kraju i tak skończyła się jej brudna droga przez Faulknera, Hrabala, Dostojewskiego. (Better known to his friends as the Death's-head moth.) Jako, że scena zabójstwa trwała dobre dziesięć minut, bo na zmianę albo było mi żal, albo strach; albo barykada uniemożliwiająca drogęjejucieczki się rozwalala albo moja broń się rozwijała w harmonijkę - toteż śmiem zaliczyć owo starcie do jednych z największych i najbardziej brutalnych epizodów tego sierpnia, zaraz po guzie nabitym R. w ramach zabawy uderz mnie kapciem, a Ci na pewno oddam, i rąbnięciu się otwartą szafkę w kuchni z okazji piątrorannego wstawania po wodę i tegożniepamiętania.

Sierpień tego roku ma smak bazylii i pieczonych ziemniaków. W wyjątkowo wolnym od dniu pracy zachwyca jeszcze bardziej i każe rozpieprzać się do południa popijąc zimne mleko z wanilią i kalecząc jabłka mocnymi zębami. Jest zapowiedzią końca świata zawartego w tuiteraz, zarazinatychmiast. Takim pewnikiem na to, że wieczność to facet koszący trawę pod oknami z pieśnią na ustach: Zbieram jagody, niezależnie od pogody i esemes od przyjaciółki: Znalazłam pijanego jeża w pomidorach, patrzył na mnie, jakby chciał powiedzieć: to miały być, kurwa, jabłuszka.

So why am I writing in July about Resolutions? Well I am just looking through my previous years resolutions. Thirtieth / 2006 / 2007 There seems to be a familiar pattern.

I only do four each year, and all of them mention:

• No More Smoking!
• Get Fit & Stay Fit
• Manage my cash & life better
• Keep a life journal

So what do I want to do right now?

1. Give up smoking - I try and I fail. I think its been about six times I have given up now, and every time it lasts about three months. However, I have declared my flat to be a non smoking flat. (Once the new kitchen is all fitted, and the front room has been painted)
2. Get Fit & Stay Fit - Again, I find this difficult. Its all about routine. Its all about sticking to a plan. When my kitchen is fitted, me and Becky want to do a routine of ONLY shopping for the week on a Monday night. Stick to the meal plan, and stick to a shopping list. Its not just going out running, but having a change of lifestyle.
3. Manage my cash & life better - Something I can actually do! Do you want to know how to do this? Have two accounts - one for your bills and one for spending.
4. Keep a life Journal - I love technology, but what I want is a private online blog linked to my laptop. Has anyone got any recommendations for journalling software?

After spending three days in a B&B in Catania, me and Becks were fortunate to ask Angela (who managed the Catania City Centre B&B) to find us a nice B&B in Trapani. We had thought long and hard where we wanted to stay, and after dismissing Palermo, it was between Selinunte and Trapani. We discovered getting to Selinunte would prove difficult… So we stayed 200m away from Trapani Train Station at a B&B called Cortille di Venere It was well priced at only €48 per night, and was ideally situated in the old town of Trapani.

Trapani is a great base for the non-touristy east side of Sicily. There could be lots to do on this side of the island, but we didnt find it! We just spent three days chill-axing.. three days of slowly wandering round, having a few beers and lots more coffees, and smoking lots and lots of cigarettes.. I had finished the two books I had bought with me (Flashmans Lady, and Flashman and the Mountain of Light - Great Books!) and we were walking at snails pace round the town!! It was sooo quiet!

Anyway the next day we wanted to go to Selinunte, but my alarm was set for weekdays only and we didn’t get up till 11:30.  Instead we caught the hydrofoil across to Levanzo.. one of the beautiful Aegardian Islands. Only 450 people there, and its the epitome of peace and quiet.. When we got back to Trapani, we went out for a beer and some food. (but forgot to get some food..)

Sunday was my 33rd birthday, and I did find out the day before that everything was going to be closed, so with our hangover we went to the beach for the day.It rose to 35°C during the day, and we had to go and relax in the shade for the rest of the day.. I also discovered Brioche with icecream.. basically an icecream in a bun! tasty… That night we went out for a lovely meal at a new restaurant that had only just opened.

Our last day, and again we wanted to go to Selinunte..  and again we were thwarted. The bus only runs at 6:55 and 12:35 and takes three hours.. it was not meant to be. Instead we slowly wandered Trapani, drinking lots of espresso, and taking lots of pictures…

Tips ‘n’ tricks

1. Guidebooks.. dont forget them!If you do bring one, get a decent one - Lonely Planet or Rough Guide
2. Its possible to go on holiday with just one cabin bag (article to follow) — just plan it carefully!
3. Be prepared for days of nothing… just sit back and put your feet up with an espresso

Me and Becks finally managed to get away for our first ever holiday together and we chose Sicily.

We chose to fly with RyanAir from London Stanstead, and as our flight was leaving at 06:05 we had to get the train the night before. Arriving near midnight, we settled down to relax in one of the cafes. I was soon asleep! Anyway, we finally boarded and were soon arriving to a beautiful, if slightly windy day at Palermo Airport.

Once we had got the bus to the capital city, and boarded a €23 train, we soon found ourselves wandering through the city streets of Sicilys second city, Catania. We were looking for our B&B, and Angela had given us some great directions so it wasn’t long before we found Catania City Centre B&B. We were given a very comprehensive review of the city and local tourist sights, and promptly booked a trip to Mount Etan the following day.

Mount Etna can be quite stunning.. unfortunately we went on a day with a bit of drizzle! However, we still saw some underground lava created tunnels, and one of the crators at 2000m .. no running lava though. Apparently, its worth going during the night if that is what you are after. Once we got back to Catania, we wandered round and discovered the Castle and also some beautiful side streets. We went out to a lovely fish restaurant that night as well, where we were ‘treated’ to witnessing the Sicilian version of illegal parking.. simply burn the car !! (oh and Manchester United beat Chelsea in the Champions league - it was down to penaltys) The next day, with a small hangover, we decided to get the train over to Taormina.

Taormina is Sicilys tourist town. As many Sicilians wanted to tell us, “You won’t see the true Sicily in Taormina” .. maybe, buts it a wonderful place with an ancient Greek Theatre, and it has great views! Anyway, we arrived at the train station and decided to go walk along the beach to find the way up to Taormina, as its situated on a hill… it wasnt until we had walked about 4km that we realised we had gone the wrong way, and at this point we got the bus to the town!!

It seemed to be full of a lot more tourists than usual, and we put this down to a cruise liner we saw in the bay earlier. One of the main sights we wanted to see was the Greek Theatre. It was only €6 for entry, and it was worthwhile. The history and the views are stunning. We wandered round for an hour or so, and I took a lot of pictures - see my flickr page - but soon we decided we had to explore the rest of the town. We headed down the Corso, grabbed overpriced beers and pizza and espressos, and before you knew it we were absolutely knackered and headed to go and get our bus home, which was slightly more expensive than the train there.

On Friday we decided to move on, and after putting the world to rights with Angela at Breakfast, we walked on down to the Train Station only to miss our train! Instead we got the bus, which was much quicker and we soon arrived in Palermo to catch our onwards bus to Trapani..

Tips ‘n’ Tricks?

1. Take some money before you go, only about one in five Sicilian cash machines let me draw money from abroad.
2. Learn some basic italian.. not many Sicilians speak English. “Parle Inglese?” … no
3. Learn to love espresso… oh my god! its great… and keeps you energised!
4. Take a decent guidebook.. Lonely Planet and Rough Guides both have there updated 2008 versions coming out two weeks after we got back from our own holiday!
