Of course, if these preposterous bonuses and pay packages are to be cut, this "talent" (and we've all seen how talented they are in running the whole economy into the ground) threatens to run off to other countries with less regulations. Because hey, if I can earn twenty million pounds instead of ten, why stay at home and work for peanuts? Who knows, with just ten million a year, I might have to cut down on expenses a bit, right? Can't have that, I work hard enough as it is.

Call me a Communist, but I think noone works hard enough to earn 21 million pounds per year. Here in Italy, people die doing dangerous work for 600 euros (477 pounds, 811 USD) a month. An investment banker is worth 44,025 times that? How so? And how is it that someone needs 21 million pounds per year? If you have a big house, a holiday home or two, some big cars, some money in the bank and you can put your kids through college even if they are thicker than a brick, what do you need the remaining 20 million pounds per year for?

Also invited was Filippo, who was born in nearby Formia, but had lived many years in Sheffield, Yorkshire.  Now he and his wife have purchased a house on the outskirts of Itri, and have become our close friends.  From time to time Filippo helps out Paul with jobs around the grounds of "Tre  Cancelle", and in June we much appreciated their help as they looked after our hounds, so that we could go off on our trip back to the UK. 

Pasquale excelled himself , going to a great deal of trouble to organise Paul's very special birthday supper at his apartment in Itri. It was very sweet of him and we had a super evening which we will always look back on fondly.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, more commonly called San Siro, is a football
stadium in Milan, Italy. It is the home stadium for two of the three most
successful Italian Football League clubs: A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale,
and one of the most famous football stadiums in the world. Although it has
been officially renamed in honour of Giuseppe Meazza, the Inter and Milan
player of the 1930s and 1940s, it is still commonly called San Siro. With the
spectators being so close to the pitch, the stands being so steep and with a
large roof, it is considered to have one of the best atmospheres of any
stadium in the world.
The stadium construction started in 1925 in the Milanese district of San Siro,
which gave its original name. The idea to build a stadium in the same district
of the horse racing track, belongs to the man who then was the president of
A.C. Milan, Piero Pirelli. The architects designed a stadium only for football
(there is no athletics track in it). The inauguration was on 19 September 1926,
when 35,000 spectators saw Inter defeat Milan 6-3. Originally the ground was
home and property of AC Milan. In 1947 Internazionale became tenants and
the two have shared the ground ever since. Although Giuseppe Meazza played
for both Internazionale and AC Milan, he enjoyed more success at Inter and is
more favoured by the Inter faithful; as a result, Milan fans favour the term San
Siro for the ground.

As well as being used by Milan and Inter, the Italian national side also plays
occasional games there and it has also been used for the 2000/01,1969/1970
and 1964/65 Champions League/European Cup finals. The stadium was also
used for UEFA Cup finals when played over home and away legs but has never
featured since the competition changed to a single final structure in 1997/98.

The stadium underwent further renovations for the 1990 World Cup with
$60m being spent, bringing the stadium up to UEFA 5-star standard. As part
of the renovations, the stadium became all seated, with an extra tier being
added to 3 sides of the stadium. This entailed the building of 11 concrete
towers around the outside of the stadium. Four of these concrete towers
located at the corner to support a new roof which has distinctive protruding
red girders.

Whenever I'm over here, I engage more actively in a barter economy, which I suppose is more archaic than a regular capitalist economy involving money. Briefly, I tend to do computer and/or translation stuff for my neighbour I. (I've even done an entire website for her), and she in return sorts out various appointments with builders and such and she also deals with things in my absence (bless her!).

Today for instance, she had a distraught phone call from an acquaintance whose 20-year-old son had gone to London and was going to have nowhere to stay tonight, as the deposit for a flat that his parents had transferred via the bank hadn't arrived in English account yet (they only transferred it on Wednesday FFS - how is it supposed to get there within 2 days' time?). They needed someone to phone the agency in London to find out what was going on, and try to get the keys for him so he wouldn't be homeless. The son's English being very poor, and the parents with no second language at all.

Little do these people realise that London is an evil capitalist shithole. No money = no fucking keys! When I phoned the agency, I knew straight away they weren't going to budge. London is unlike the Italian countryside, where it's fine to pay money later and where the word is enough to make people feel secure. Over there, nothing will happen without money. I understand both cultures - the UK is my home, and I have been here in Italy plenty of times - but for these poor parents it must have been quite a shock.

Anyhow, I did some research for him (youth hostels in London), explained about Gumtree (classifieds to find accommodation), and also my neighbour emailed and phoned my ex BF who lives in London (I gave her the contact details e.g. his phone no. at work and his work email address - seeing that it was really quite urgent I reckoned she must get in touch with im ASAP). He replied and said he would help the guy out, and that he could stay at his flat tonight etc. - very nice of him :)

The point of this post though is that I always do whatever I'm asked when I'm here, and generally speaking like to think I have a good 'track record' of doing things for people for free. I enjoy the idea behind barter, and I notice it's a common feature of the culture here. For instance this week-end we were meant to go olive picking, which the neighbours do for various farmers and in return they get their olive oil for free all year.

For some reason, I get a buzz off doing things for people for nowt. I suppose it's because I'm very very good at some things, but shite at others. Thus, I enjoy putting my expertise in certain areas to good use and to help others out (as it's easy for me to do), so I can half expect / demand them to do stuff for me which I'm not good at, thus saving money :P

Maybe my motivation is a capitalist one after all. I mean I'm not some Hippie type selfless 'giver', nor am I motivated by any religion or similar ('doing good'). Though it does make me happy to solve something and sort out what *only I can sort out*, and no one else. Think of it what you will :)

The Pirate Bay has seen a block on its website in Italy overturned by a judge.

The website was censored in Italy back in August when an Italian prosecutor managed to get the majority of ISPs to stop their customers from accessing the site.

After an appeal by the website, however, this decision has been overturned, and better yet deemed illegal by the Court of Bergamo.

This change of tact may set a precedent for the access of foreign websites in Italy, mainly that no foreign website can be blocked for having content that allegedly infringes copyright.

No provision for copyright infringement

Pirate Bay's lawyers Giovanni Battista Gallus and Francesco Micozzi spoke to Torrent Freak about the decision and said: "Under Italian law, this is possible only for child porn and for unauthorized gambling, but there is no such provision for copyright infringement.

"We have to make sure that no legislative bill promoting such filtering provisions will be passed in the future.

"At the European level, many authorities pointed out the need to find a balance between the enforcement of alleged copyright infringements, users' rights, and privacy issues."

But we’re students have limited budget, although as much we would like to go. To book a hotel rooms will cost us too much. That’s why we’ve decided to rent our Tuscany holiday villas in Florence, Siena and Pisa. It’s cheaper than a hotel room rate for students like us. As foreign tourists we can also get some more information from Tuscany tourist information. We are so ecstatic to have this vacation to see some of the best world art heritage with our own very eye.

Basically, it was amazing! Being in such an exciting, busy and energetic place -- even if it did rain the majority of the time we were there -- was incredible. I've been meaning to write about it for a long, long time, but I've never created the opportunity. I was looking through tons of my photos today, though, and was reminded of so many awesome places we went. Looking back now, it's hard to believe I was really standing there, so far from home. But it was incredible being an American abroad!

Our first day arriving in Rome on a flight from London, we grabbed a cab and headed out to our hotel about 30 minutes from the airport. After trying to settle in a little bit following a harrowing drive through the country with a newlywed couple on their way to Venice, we took one of the hotel's buses into town and went straight to Vatican City.

It's a good thing we did, too -- this was really our only "nice" day in Rome. It poured, poured and poured buckets almost the entire rest of our trip in Italy -- including the following Sunday, when we returned to the Vatican for mass. Tons of other tourists were out, too, including several American student groups. English was being spoken all over the place -- surprisingly comforting and disappointing all at once! It was nice to know we could communicate while getting around, but not quite as "authentic" as I was expecting. That was good though, really -- and we were always in heavily visited areas of the city.

Dinner that night was one of the best of the trip -- our first evening in Italy, out on the sidewalks in a tiny cafe as, originally, the only diners, and a gorgeous breeze blowing through. We had pizza and marveled at the differences between authentic Italian cuisine and our American version (honestly, I greatly prefer American "Italian" food!), then figured out when ordering water, you must always specify if you want "flat" or "sparkling" (flat -- always flat). We won't make that mistake again.

Other favorite stops on our Roman holiday included the Spanish Steps (above) and the Trevi Fountain -- and the latter was one of the loveliest attractions we saw in Italy. I could have stood there all day, staring at that blue pool of water! I don't know why, but it was mesmorizing.

Of course, I tossed in my coin and made my wish: To return to Rome. Ironically, after getting with our tour and visiting Venice, Florence, Tuscany and Lake Garda, we did return to Rome -- and the fountain. We went back in the rain one week later, but it didn't have nearly the charm of that first day! I'm not counting that as my triumphant "return" to Trevi.

Dinner on night two was fun, warm and exciting. We traveled around the country with a tour group, so we had the chance to talk with several other couples/families on our trip. One Canadian couple took a liking to us and snapped the above photo of my sister and me. It should be pointed out that most people on our vacation with us thought Kate was my parents' daughter and I was a "friend." What they mean by "friend" exactly, I will never know!

It was all amazing, though. I have so many more photos and an equal amount of enthusiasm for all of them, but I'll save them for a lulling afternoon to post, reminisce and enjoy some more!

Scola’s movies are prolonged conversations.

In la famiglia it’s between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, sisters and cousins and everyone else remotely related - the entire gamut of connections that make up the web of family.

In la nuit de varennes the talk is between social classes, aristocrat and revolutionary, artist and bourgeois, but also moral classes, libertine and conservative, or gender: men and women. In both movies the conversations are anchored in one place, a turn of the century apartment in la famiglia, a postal carriage in la nuit de varennes, but in the former the camera and characters travel through through the rooms and corridors in repetitive patterns that both signal the passage of time and underscore the cyclical nature of it.

in la nuit de varennes, it’s the carriage that is the container for the key characters and like the events of the period, it doesn’t stand still, but moves forward ineluctably. it sweeps through space and time - an increasingly sinister French countryside - in a matter of days, charting a metaphorical journey through the upheavals of a nation in the throes of revolution.

The characters log their own journeys- personal, psychological - and none escapes the violence of history raging outside unscathed; they witness how the social and political fabric that has molded their identity and understanding of themselves is being torn apart and reconfigured, largely without their consent and participation. The conversations inside the carriage, a stew of prophecies and running commentary, are milestones marking the rapid escalation of events outside. this carriage, in scola's hands, becomes a time machine, transporting us back to a window in history when the revolution was not a fact, but an apocalyptic possibility to some, a mind-boggling reversal of fortune to others, and, to a few, a vague, distraction.

There is an interesting parallel between Gassmann as the resigned, bemused and mildly reluctant patriarch in la famiglia, and the unlikely father figure of the ageing Casanova as played by Mastroianni in Varennes. Both, by sheer virtue of advanced age, stumble more than tread into the role of pater familias, presiding over an extended cast of erring and errant characters.

Mastroianni’s Casanova much against his will becomes a reference point for the disparate assembly that collides in the cramped, claustrophobic carriage, mainly because he is imbued with experience, yet detached from life. Alone among all the characters tossed about - by bad roads, the forces of change - Casanova is a paragon of calm and indifference, having narrowed his expectations down to eating and sleeping. 

scola in fact portrays him as on the run, not from the revolution, but from his own imprudent past, which is harassing him in the shape of count waldstein's officers. captured, he is returned to an unbearable existence as caged librarian. casanova, at heart more an individualist than a revolutionary, is fighting for freedom, but strictly his own and his efforts ultimately are as futile as those of the austrian countess fighting to preserve a world on the brink of collapse.

casanova's indifference to the cataclysmic events of the moment, his focus on the basic, repetitive acts of human survival, hark back to the immutable and permanent that underlies human life, despite the convulsions that risk annihilating it every so often. It’s a repetitiveness that we also encounter in la famiglia, not just in the solid perpetuity of the apartment itself, but in those recurring gestures and words and patterns of behaviour that fill it and stubbornly establish the continuity of life.

Outrageous.

Last night on Italy’s Lake of Como, eighty Barclay’s bankers and clients gathered together in the storied Villa Erba to celebrate with their fiddles as Rome continued burning around them.  And while the paparazzi wary bankers spent two days and 700,000 Euros, the British Prime Minister traveled across Britain to sell his rescue package to hardworking British voters.

The bankers banned the paparazzi, but not the Greco di Tufo wine, ricotta stuffed ravioli, fillet of Brunello, apple pastry and chocolate mousse. Their sacrifice of the evening was to forgo a planned trip to La Scala, ostensibly due to the 13 percent of company value lost that day, but in reality, they wanted to avoid the aggressive paparazzi that would have been free to snap away in front of the legendary opera house.

It wasn’t just a once a year broker-client excursion. Just last week the oblivious bankers enjoyed a week in one of the Cote d’Azur’s finest hotels priced at around three thousand Euros per night.

The fury over the trips has little to do with class envy and everything to do with discretion. Hopefully, these Neros will be awakened to the reality of the global economic inferno, ignited by financial institutions like Barclay's.

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Friday that the government's financial rescue plan was aggressive enough and big enough to work, but would take time to fully kick in.

"We are a prosperous nation with immense resources and a wide range of tools at our disposal ... We can solve this crisis and we will," Bush said in brief remarks from the White House Rose Garden.
 

Bush spoke as leaders of the world's leading economies gathered in Washington amid frozen credit markets, panic selling in stock markets and a looming global recession.

The president noted that major Western economies were working together in an attempt to stabilize markets and end the spreading panic.

"Through these efforts, the world is sending an unmistakable signal. We're in this together and we'll come through this together," Bush said.

Finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of Seven — the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, France Italy and Canada — were here for a weekend meeting. Bush plans to meet with the leaders on Saturday.

Bush said he understood how Americans could be concerned about their economic future, "that anxiety can feed anxiety and that can make it hard to see all that's being done to solve the problem."

Der Blick vom an sich hässlichen Piazzale Michelangelo auf die Stadt ist atemberaubend schön (mehr bei Ipernity). Man sollte allerdings nicht mit dem Bus oder Auto hochfahren, sondern die vielen Stufen gehen. Von dort ergeben sich immer wieder neue, andere Ausblicke auf Florenz.

Though Piazzale Michelangelo is not very pretty you have a breathtaking view on Florence (more in my album at Ipernity). I recommend not to go there by bus or by car but climb the stairs. So you can enjoy the different views.

David, von Michelangelo - der perfekte Mann? Nun, jedenfalls war er aus der Ferne zu sehen, als wir entlang der Stadtmauer nach unten gingen. Es scheinen also Drillinge zu sein ;-) der grüne David auf der Piazzale Michelangelo, die Kopie neben den Uffizien und das Original im Museum.

What Who goes up must go down - hier war es umgekehrt, hoch und runter und dann viele angenehm zu gehende Stufen bis zur Piazza hoch über der Stadt. Wer trotzdem unterwegs verschnaufen musste, hatte guten Grund dazu: mit jedem Schritt weiter nach oben ergaben sich atemberaubende Ausblicke auf die Stadt Florenz. Der weite Platz oben ist nicht unbedingt schön zu nennen: asphaltiert, voller Andenkenverkäufer, David weitgehend unbeachtet, denn alle Leute stehen 'auf den Balkonen', an den Ballustraden ringsherum. Die hinreißende Aussicht verschlug so manchem die Sprache und stiehlt auch der berühmten Statue die Schau.

Und was sieht Pinocchio Besonderes? Das zeige ich morgen ... oder übermorgen ... (es gibt auch wieder einen Bericht im anderen Blog und Fotos bei Ipernity).

Active volcanoes produce a mix of seismic signals or small earthquakes that can indicate an eruption, but interpreting their significance is notoriously difficult. So the capacity to analyze these signals under laboratory conditions and understand how they are caused by water, steam, gas or magma rushing through cracks in rock is a significant step forward.

The rock used was basalt from Mount Etna. Water was forced through under pressure to simulate the conditions within an erupting volcano.
