Jill Sobule (of the old-school “I Kissed a Girl” fame) has a point in this recent Huffin

Jill Sobule (of the old-school "I Kissed a Girl" fame) has a point in this recent Huffington Post blog entry: what's missing when you download a song/album from iTunes or some other music service is all that cool information you would normally get if you bought the CD and read the booklet. Who played drums on Track 5? Whom would the artist like to thank? Little tidbits like that just aren't there in most cases (although I hasten to add that many artists have now made digital booklets available for download, but you usually have to buy the whole album in order to get those).

From an artists' standpoint, I can see why Sobule and others miss the booklet--that's where the credit lies. All the studio musicians and lesser-known band members' work, while still shining in the sound of the song itself, doesn't get any recognition in the fixed form of a text. And how many fans are going to be interested and thoughtful enough to do the research to find out who played what on which song?

Well, me, actually--although I'd rather someone save me the trouble. I'm one of those dorky people who sits down and reads the entire CD booklet when she buys a new CD because I want to know everything I can (Did you know that Dave Grohl plays drums on Pete Yorn's "For Us" from the disc Nightcrawler? Do you even know who Pete Yorn is? Because if you don't, you should). As a recent immigrant to iTunes, I hadn't even realized I was missing studio credits and liner notes because most of what I was downloading were "replacement CDs"--works by artists I'd bought years ago when albums were still on cassette. It's only lately when I've downloaded a full CD that was released a few years ago that I'm only just now getting around to purchasing (now that I can do so with a click of a mouse, considering I live in a town with one small record store), that I've started to realize what Sobule bemoans in her blog.

Maybe it's only music trivia dorks like me who miss the booklet, and maybe it's folks like me who will eventually help to keep the physical CD alive. I only hope that more artists catch on to the digital booklet phenomenon. Because some of us actually do care that Dave Matthews' solo album was recorded at Stone Gossard's studio in Seattle and to whom Radiohead dedicated In Rainbows.

Radiohead is once again doing crazy awesome things to traditional music mediums. After being cut free from their label, they are doing the unthinkable for a successful band - making their music free and accessible to fans. The freedom they have applied to In Rainbows in general is fantastic: allowing fans to choose the album price, the Nude remix contest. With few exceptions, the record industry has not embraced or even really recognized the sea change brought on by digital media - not only music "piracy" but also the proliferation of fan remixes. Radiohead, Beck, NiN and a few others are catching on - and I'm glad to see it.

Now Radiohead made a music video for House of Cards using 3D imaging technology (no cameras or lighting) and provided the visualization data for users to play with and make their own music videos.

Here is the original video:

Check out the youtube group for fan-made videos.

Oh and here's the data plus a "making-of" video.

If you haven't read it already, you should also check out this interview in Wired of Thom Yorke by David Byrne (Talking Heads interview Radiohead - hee!). I also found Byrne's accompanying opinion piece on the future of the recording industry really interesting.

Let's face it, Radiohead could record their farts and loop them backwards with some reverb and the critics would still be creaming their skidmarked pants. They can do no wrong. They are officially 'My Favourite Band In The World' so I was particularly excited to see them in London.

The stage in Victoria Park was massive - it was more like a festival vibe and the capacity must have been 20-30,000 and this was the second night on the sell out UK leg of their world tour. They are also everyone else's Favourite Band In The World.

Thome was looking punky in tight red jeans and a Bowie circa Aladdin Sane hair do - which was apt as on stage Mr Yorke looked like a Amanin Sane. The sound was great and live they are very faithful to their recordings, helped by top notch production.

The tour was on the back of In Rainbows but then it ascended into a greatest hits which was obviously what the band wanted. I heard on the night before it was more of their recent albums. I'm seeing them next in August at the Hollywood Bowl.

No utiliza ninguna cámara!!

It's that time of the year again! Below are the 12 nominees for 2008's Mercury Music Prize. And the latest odds as of the 22nd of July.

* Adele - 19  8/1
* British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music? 8/1
* Burial - Untrue  6/1
* Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid 6/1
* Estelle - Shine  8/1
* Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim 8/1
* Neon Neon - Stainless Style  10/1
* Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep In The North Sea 10/1
* Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns 10/1
* Radiohead - In Rainbows  5/1
* Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand 6/1
* The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement 5/1

For the most part the choices are quite predictable. And the odds don't really seem to favour any obvious favourite, which is wise as the judging panel rarely picks any 'favourite'.

Radiohead are always a dead cert to be nominated whenever they can be. The list has the typical rock/'indie' slant to it with the usual, slightly patronising, 'Token Jazz' (Portico Quartet), 'Token Folk' (Rachel Unthank) and the 'Token Black' (Estelle) choices.

The only really suprising absences are, in my opinion, Portishead, for returning with a fresh and imaginiative return that is easily up there with their previous peak. And Coldplay, for being generally popular and not as shit as they used to be.

The smart money would be on Radiohead, the general consensus even by casual Radiohead fans, is that it's the strongest album they've done since the masterpeice that is Ok Computer. But as is common with the Mercury Music Prize, a complete outsider and relative unknown will probably win. So perhaps a speculative fiver on Laura Marling or Burial might be wise?

Overall, it's a strong list. I shall be buying the few albums on the list that I haven't heard or have been meaning to get around to buying, just so I can be justifably outraged when the judges commit another Klaxonesque blunder like last year.

When I've listened to all the albums and when I've got more time I'll do a more indepth analysis of the nominees with lots of samples and downloads too.

Em 2006, o cantor e guitarrista venceu com "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", primeiro disco dos Monkeys.

No ano passado, o disco premiado foi "Myths of The Near Future", do Klaxons.

Impresionante.

Speaking of Radiohead: this video for "House of Cards," from thier new album, IN RAINBOWS, is amazing. No cameras or lights were used to create the images. Instead, 3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects. Directed by James Frost, the video was created entirely with visualizations of that data. From their online album release with its "you decide" pricing structure and now this video, Radiohead are the undisputed visionaries of the music world.

Can you tell, me, please, where is the closest shop for fake nails?

- Huh? I'm sorry... I'm just a tourist. You can ask that woman (i-am arătat o trecătoare la fel de argintie) she has plenty answers in her bag! Şi am plecat.

Oare când s-a înserat?

I just wanted to post a shameless plug for my own website, Inner Ear. Inner Ear is a music website that used to focus solely on promotion, but because I do pretty much everything myself, it was kinda hard to keep on doing a good job on that. So the focus has shifted more towards reviews & interviews. Things are going slightly better again lately, after a few months where things were quiet (well, i had to graduate too).

After self-releasing their new album, In Rainbows, Radiohead continues to defy the mundane musings of the now defunct music business model: by releasing a music video (mind you, not on MTV) with not one single shot used by a conventional camera. How you ask?

""House Of Cards", directed by James Frost of Zoo Films, was created utilizing two technologies: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead and several partygoers. The Velodyne Lidar system uses multiple lasers to capture large environments in 3D, in this case 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute, capturing all of the exterior scenes and wide party shots. Geometric processed their own data while 510 Systems processed the Velodyne Lidar data. The data was then manipulated by Union Editorial and the Syndicate to create the final result."

How long can Radiohead keep up with this pace of ingenuity? I tend to agree with Thom Yorke's comments on their new videoless video.

"I always like the idea of using technology in a way that it wasn't meant to be used, the struggle to get your head round what you can do with it. I liked the idea of making a video of human beings and real life and time without using any cameras, just lasers, so there are just mathematical points--and how strangely emotional it ended up being."

Larga vida a Radiohead.

Radiohead's new, technologically-bitchin'* video for "House of Cards":

*- that's the technical term. The video was created without the use of a camera.. at all.

Update 7/19/08: The Radiohead video (above) is now downloadable for free from Radiohead's Dead Air Space blog HERE.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Check out where jazz trio Dave Douglas, Donny McCaslin, and Luis Bonilla got to play (Rifugio Antermoia, Trentino, Italy - July 10, 2008 - photo by Max Bacchin):

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And now for a fun, experimental collaboration between art-noise rocker Mike Patton and Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq.

The song is called "Fire-Ikuma," and it's from Tagaq's upcoming album, Auk~Blood. There was an external link to an mp3 sample of the songs... alas, it's been removed. :( Anyway, it's a good song... especially if you like experimental, world music with a throat music (or Mike Patton) slant.

Working with director Matthew Taylor on a 'Akira' style art piece for the new Radiohead Album: In Rainbows. The album is the soundtrack and of course it's a silent film. The trick is to make believable, yet powerful 3D and surreal imagery for an actress and imposed characters to live in. The first scene is a beautiful girl (who is really similar to a robotic being) who is being controlled by an alien force who is looking down to her from a 'control room'. Here are some concepts we designed. I'll put up more shots when i get back into the studio.

[caption id="attachment_83" align="alignnone" width="496" caption="Radiohead In Rainbows music video concepts"][/caption]

IN RAINBOWS
15 Step
INT.

After all the commotion caused by “In Rainbows” last October, it would be difficult to imagine Radiohead clinging to any music industry traditions. But to think their album could churn out any more oddities came as something of a shock.

Radiohead stepped up to the challenge, though, and this week, released their “House of Cards” video, whose images were produced, not with lights or cameras, but wholly with “3D plotting technologies”.

The video was crafted using visualizations of data describing the “shapes and relative distances of objects,” namely, Thom’s head. If that doesn’t quite cut it for an explanation, though, find out what really went into the project by watching it in the makings:

If the video really caught your interest, you can make your own and upload it to the Youtube group.
