The snow and ice covered rocks sloped down and away from us in an alarming fashion. The same stacked and wintry boulders that had just been inches from my nose on the ascent not ten minutes ago now looked very far away and impossibly spaced to allow for a safe descent. I turned to my companion, Mountain Man for his thoughts.

“So, how are we going to get down?”

Cold winds swooped by us and I waited for some good idea from my friend. How the hell do I wind up in these situations? Oh right, I follow friends like Mountain Man up actual mountains in the dead of winter.

Wow... That’s a long way down.

It all started some time in the fall. My climbing friend had a lot of training to do. Though his lightly built frame would fool many into thinking that he lived a more sedentary life or at most, was a weekend runner, He’s the poster child for the saying, “Looks can be deceiving.”

He’s tall, thin, almost gangly and always seems to sport a special, goofy , lopsided smile. He is also made of what I gather, must be steel cables and iron. He is very strong and I have never once seen his stamina wane. He is also supremely confident when it comes to outdoor experiences. This can be... overly exciting at times.

The training he was so hot to get in was, as he put it, "All preparation for climbing K2". The news had just come out that its summit might just be a smidge higher than Everest’s and so if it wasn’t the highest, he didn’t want to play. K2, it was. His plan was to wait for the winter to properly nestle down on our corner of New Hampshire and then climb our beloved, lonely mountain, Monadnock. All this preferably after a really good, solid snowstorm. In the early autumn evening when this idea was put forth, it sounded like fun. A simple thing, really. How many dozen times had I been up that piece of granite? I could do it blindfolded. Sure! Why not?!

It was late in February when it all was brought back to me by my outdoorsy friend. “Remember the plan?” he enthusiastically chirped. “This is the perfect time! Next big snow storm comes and we go the next day! That way we’ll be assured of having to break the trails!”

By “breaking trails” he meant that we would have the “enviable” task of beating down the fresh snow and finding surprising holes at random intervals. Does he know how to live or what!?

Mount Monadnock is not a difficult mountain to climb, at least in the warmer months. If you take the right trail, you can be up and down in about four hours. That’s not to say is doesn’t get steep, but you can do it.. There are lots of ways you can get to the summit though, and some of the alternate paths will change that quick excursion into an all day affair. Naturally, the harder version was our chosen route.

When Mountain Man and I met at the deserted and closed parking lot, he wore his regular, big smile and a far bigger pack. The thing was huge!

“Are you ready to go?”
“Yah. What the heck is in the pack? It’s only a day hike, right?”

Visions of an unscheduled snow camping trip floated through my head. I wasn’t packed for that!

“Oh, it’s mostly my dirty laundry. That and some heavy stuff I had in my room.”
“Uhh, do you... always...”
“Training! I needed some weight.”

This is Mountain Man I’m talking about. Just winter wasn’t going to make this hard enough for him. He need more. Perhaps the loss of a leg on the way up would make him happier.

After insisting on digging thorough my bag and poaching anything weighty to add to his pack, we were off. Almost immediately, it was slow going. The path was wide and the slope, fairly gentle but it was also just shy of knee deep in unbroken snow.

No... That’s not accurate. The top foot was unbroken snow. The next few inches was slushy ice and the final two or three was actual, running, melt water. All I can say is “Thank God for Gortex.” My boots were lined with the stuff and at the time, it was a new and mysterious substance. I had paid a lot for the privilege of being able to point at the little “Gortex” tag sewn on the side of each foot. Right now, they were worth every penny.

As we slogged on up our trail, Mountain Man started a running commentary. It was in the tone given by Captain James T. Kirk as he kept his captain’s log. Mountain Man’s long, colorful entries however, were of our climb up K2.

“Day 5: The Sherpas are keeping a good pace and the supplies are coming up easily. We shall miss the friendly people in the villages, but the mountain awaits.”

After an hour or so, our path changed dramatically. We broke away from the easier, if not wetter, main trail and started the first part of the real climb. The route is called the “Do Drop” trail. A lot of folks think that’s a typo and it’s supposed to be “dew”, but no, it’s intentional. It’s called that because if said in a proper, old New England accent, “It do drop, some” so watch your footing. Here it starts getting interesting.

Our first real surprise was discovered by Mountain Man, as he took the lead. In one step, he disappeared up to his armpits in snow. His arms shot out to his sides and his “WOAH!” was muffled by the heavy snow cover. He had found a hole, and a big one, to boot. It only took a minute to help him back out and another few to empty the snow from clothing. This was more like it! He was beaming.

“Day 9: A dark day for the expedition. An unseen crevasse has opened at our feet. Three Sherpas have perished as well as Dr. Robinson. We have decided to press on. The good Doctor would have wanted it that way.”

We did press on and as we finally climbed out of tree line, we bundled up against the sharp wind. The last quarter of the climb was nothing but granite covered in ice. Crampons were attached and progress slowed down as greater care was taken. We had not seen so much as a foot print ahead of us all day.

Mountain Man’s climbing log got more and more desperate as we went. Sherpas went missing in the night. Supplies were lost. Members succumbed to altitude sickness and our oxygen ran dangerously low. The actual climb was not even close to dire, but his running commentary made it seem like a far greater feat.

Photo via nh-photo.blogspot.com

As we clambered on our bellies up the steepest, last bit of the mountain, we proudly looked across the small, flat summit and stopped, just as frozen as the stone we clung to. Looking across the small plateau at us were... two other men just making the summit as well. Both parties boggled at the other, like a stunned bird after hitting a window. The same unspoken thought floated through everyone’s mind: “What the hell are YOU guys doing here?”

As it turns out, they had climbed Monadnock from the other side, making the top at the exact same moment. We all laughed, made introductions, shook hands and then... my moment of glory. I pulled out my camera and asked them to take a photo of us at the top. Happily, they obliged but before he could set up, I quickly dove back into my pack. Mountain Man looked confused. From my bag, I pulled two things. The first was an American Flag, the second was a piece of poster board. On the board I had scrawled “Summit-K2, 28,251 feet”. He laughed, we posed and the picture was taken. It hangs with some pride in my house today.

After all the picture taking and niceties were done, it was time to go down. The other expedition headed down the gentle slope the way they come up. We looked back at the path that took us back to our starting point. “Hmmm. That’s quite a drop.”

“So, now what? It’s going to be awful for climbing down. What’s your plan?”

Mountain Man looked at the huge stones covered in ice and snow, thought for a moment and then, with out a word... jumped. HE ACTUALLY JUMPED! My eyes must have been the size of saucers as he sailed through the air and bounded from the top of one frozen rock, six feet down to the next and then the next. It was like watching a rubber ball disappear down the slope as he bounded along at high speed. I looked back at the empty summit and then to the rapidly shrinking image of my friend. With out a breath in my lungs, I leaped after him.

It was one of those stupid but life defining moments. If either of us missed out footing, the damage would have been horrific. This was long before the days of cell phones so there was no way to call for help if we needed it. Foolish? You bet your ass it was foolish. Exhilarating? Hooooooo Yah! The two of us yelped and hooted as we bounded at full stride down the rocks and path. What finially stopped us was an unseen root that reached out and snagged Mountain Man’s foot, mid-run. He quickly went down, disappeared into the deep snow and plowed along benieth its surface for ten or so feet. All that could be seen was his oversized pack cutting through the surface like a sharks fin through water. I helped him up and mercifully, the only injury was a cut lip and tender ankle. He hobbled the remaining way down, and we let the adrenaline slowly subside. We had made it. We were soaked, we were tired, and one of us was a little bloody, just the way he hoped.

I’ve never climbed Monadnock in the snow again and to be honest, I don’t feel the need. Call me too old, call me too cautious but I know the real reason.

Don’t you know? I’ve been to the top of K2, and have the photo to prove it.

The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible."

In a posting to the APS forum, editor Jeffrey Marque explains,"There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution."

The APS is opening its debate with the publication of a paper by Lord Monckton of Brenchley, which concludes that climate sensitivity -- the rate of temperature change a given amount of greenhouse gas will cause -- has been grossly overstated by IPCC modeling. A low sensitivity implies additional atmospheric CO2 will have little effect on global climate.

Larry Gould, Professor of Physics at the University of Hartford and Chairman of the New England Section of the APS, called Monckton’s paper an "expose of the IPCC that details numerous exaggerations and "extensive errors"

In an email to DailyTech, Monckton says, "I was dismayed to discover that the IPCC’s 2001 and 2007 reports did not devote chapters to the central ’climate sensitivity’ question, and did not explain in proper, systematic detail the methods by which they evaluated it. When I began to investigate, it seemed that the IPCC was deliberately concealing and obscuring its method."

According to Monckton, there is substantial support for his results, "in the peer-reviewed literature, most articles on climate sensitivity conclude, as I have done, that climate sensitivity must be harmlessly low."

Monckton, who was the science advisor to Britain’s Thatcher administration, says natural variability is the cause of most of the Earth’s recent warming. "In the past 70 years the Sun was more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years ... Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth."

The world is cooling, sea levels are falling, ice is spreading, there are fewer extreme weather events, and it was hotter 1000 years ago, yet the myth of global warming is providing governments the excuse to micromanage every aspect of our lives, with Al Gore now openly calling for a carbon tax on the energy we use.

Following the end of the Sun’s most active period in over 11,000 years, the last 10 years have displayed a clear cooling trend as temperatures post-1998 leveled out and are now plummeting.

But such figures won’t deter the agenda of control freaks like Al Gore, who last night publicly called for a carbon tax to be imposed on the use of fossil fuels at a time when even middle class families are struggling to pay the bills as a result of a crippled economy, soaring oil prices and inflation.

Andrew Bolt of the Australian Sun-Herald has put together a series of graphs based on numbers from a plethora of scientific bodies to prove that the most alarmist claims about climate change are not only unproven, but in fact the complete opposite of what man-made global warming advocates proclaim is now being observed.

“That’s why 31,000 other scientists, including world figures such as physicist Prof Freeman Dyson, atmospheric physicist Prof Richard Lindzen and climate scientist Prof Fred Singer, issued a joint letter last month warning governments not to jump on board the global warming bandwagon,” writes Bolt.

“There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the earth’s climate.”

That’s why Ivar Glaever, who won a Nobel Prize for Physics, this month declared “I am a sceptic”, because “we don’t really know what the actual effect on the climate is”.

And it’s why the American Physical Society this month said “there is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for the global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution.”

The first graph, obtained from the Hadley Centre of Britain’s Meteorological Office, shows how temperatures dropped, leveled off, and are now displaying a clear cooling trend, since their 1998 peak which was caused by the “El Nino” weather phenomenon, which is completely natural and has nothing to do with CO2 emissions.

Click here for full PDF format.

The figures mesh with anecdotal evidence of a cooling pattern - China recently experienced its coldest winter in 100 years while northeast America was hit by record snow levels and Britain suffered its coldest April in decades as late-blooming daffodils were pounded with hail and snow on an almost daily basis. The British summer has also left many yearning for global warming, with temperatures in June and July rarely struggling to get over 16 degrees and on one occasion even dropping as low as 9 degrees in the middle of the afternoon.

A common claim of behalf of Al Gore and the Church of Environmentalism, and one vividly portrayed in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, is a predicted catastrophic rise in sea levels as a result of global warming.

In actual fact, figures from the Colorado Centre For Astrodynamics Research show that global sea levels, after having risen since 2000, have been falling significantly over the last 2 years.

In addition, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sea ice has grown rapidly in that same time frame and there is now more ice in the world than usually observed.

Click here for full size PDF of all graphs.

Another common cry from the alarmists is the contention that global warming is causing extreme weather events. Despite there having been far more violent and devastating weather events before the post World War 2 rise in CO2 levels, every flood, hurricane, tornado or cyclone is blamed on human-induced climate change.

The facts tell a different story. According to the American Meteorological Society, global warming hasn’t given us more cyclones, hurricanes, or tornados.

Furthermore, scaremongering about droughts attributed the global warming is disproved by the fact that levels of rainfall have increased.

Hysterical phony environmentalists like to imagine that the world has never been hotter, despite the fact that the planet has violently swung between extremes of temperature for eons.

New figures from the US National Council for Air and Stream Improvement debunk the IPCC’s notoriously controversial “hockey stick” graph and illustrate that the earth was a warmer place 1000 years ago. During such times, farmers in Greenland grew crops and even cultivated vineyards on a land mass that is now over 80% ice covered.

Despite evidence pouring in that the planet has naturally turned course and now embarked on a cooling trend, wild rhetoric, fearmongering, lecturing and bullying about the necessity for us to accept intrusions into our rights of mobility, privacy and behavior in the interests of saving the earth is at an all time high.

Global corporations and governments have joined forces to launch a united propaganda assault about how we must turn “green” while all the real environmental crises - deforestation, GM crops, chemtrails, genetic splicing, and cancer-causing cellphone tower radiation - are completely ignored.

Top Rocket Scientist: No Evidence CO2 Causes Global Warming

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
July 22, 2008

The campaign to force people to accept that “the debate is over” and that man-made CO2 emissions are driving climate change is in deep trouble, with another top global warming advocate - rocket scientist and carbon accounting expert Dr. Richard Evans - completely reversing his position.

Evans was a consultant to the Australian Greenhouse Office from 1999 to 2005 and he wrote the carbon accounting model (FullCAM) that measures Australia’s compliance with the Kyoto Protocol.

In an article for The Australian newspaper, Evans highlights why he was so keen to jump on board the man-made explanation without there being any clear conclusion as to what was driving temperature increases in the period from the end of the 70’s to 1998.

“The evidence was not conclusive, but why wait until we were certain when it appeared we needed to act quickly?” writes Evans. “Soon government and the scientific community were working together and lots of science research jobs were created. We scientists had political support, the ear of government, big budgets, and we felt fairly important and useful (well, I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet.”

“But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon played only a minor role and was not the main cause of the recent global warming,” he concludes.

Evans points out that the “greenhouse signature” that would indicate CO2 emissions are driving temperature increases - “a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics” - which would be evident if climate change was man-made, is simply non-existent.

“If there is no hot spot then an increased greenhouse effect is not the cause of global warming. So we know for sure that carbon emissions are not a significant cause of the global warming,” he writes.

Evans highlights data collected from satellites positioned around the globe that indicates temperatures have dropped about 0.6C in the past year - back to 1980 levels. Such figures are complimented by anecdotal evidence of a cooling pattern - China recently experienced its coldest winter in 100 years while northeast America was hit by record snow levels and Britain suffered its coldest April in decades as late-blooming daffodils were pounded with hail and snow on an almost daily basis.

Evans also cites historical climate change and the fact that CO2 does not cause, but in fact lags behind temperature increase by as much as 800 years.

“The new ice cores show that in the past six global warmings over the past half a million years, the temperature rises occurred on average 800 years before the accompanying rise in atmospheric carbon. Which says something important about which was cause and which was effect,” he writes.

“The last point was known and past dispute by 2003, yet Al Gore made his movie in 2005 and presented the ice cores as the sole reason for believing that carbon emissions cause global warming. In any other political context our cynical and experienced press corps would surely have called this dishonest and widely questioned the politician’s assertion,” writes Evans.

Two Peer-Reviewed Scientific Papers Debunk CO2 Myth

Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
July 16, 2008

Three top scientists have once again contradicted the claim that a “consensus” exists about man-made global warming with research that indicates CO2 emissions actually cool the atmosphere, in addition to another peer-reviewed paper that documents how the IPCC overstated CO2’s effect on temperature by as much as 2000 per cent.

Professor George Chilingar and Leonid Khilyuk of the University of Southern California, and Oleg Sorokhtin of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have released a study that they claim completely contradicts the link between CO2 and global temperature increases.

“The writers investigated the effect of CO2 emission on the temperature of atmosphere. Computations based on the adiabatic theory of greenhouse effect show that increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere results in cooling rather than warming of the Earth’s atmosphere,” states the preamble to the paper.

The full study, which appears in the Energy Sources journal, is sure to cause ire amongst climate cult adherants.

No global warming has been observed for the past 10 years as temperatures have gradually declined and studies indicate that there will be no further warming for the next 10 years.

In a related development, the peer-reviewed Physics and Society journal has published evidence proving that the UN IPCC’s 2007 climate summary “overstated CO2’s impact on temperature by 500-2000%.”

According to the paper, “Computer models used by the UN’s climate panel (IPCC) were pre-programmed with overstated values for the three variables whose product is “climate sensitivity” (temperature increase in response to greenhouse-gas increase), resulting in a 500-2000% overstatement of CO2’s effect on temperature in the IPCC’s latest climate assessment report, published in 2007.”

The paper also outlines evidence to confirm that Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth warmed, a factor attributed to the Sun having been more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years.

The paper concludes, “CO2 enrichment will add little more than 1 °F (0.6 °C) to global mean surface temperature by 2100.”

I am looking at a chit from the Tanglin Club for a mixed orange and watermelon juice, no ice. The price? $3.05 with GST. The wait person brings it to your table. The glass is quite nice, not crystal but passable.

I think back to the same concoction I've been drinking on and off at food courts, especially at the TTSH Kopitiam, in recent weeks. The price is $3 and it is self-service. You queue up for it and the wait aunties are at best brusque, if not downright rude or "jahat" as my maid would describe them.

At the risk of being branded a heretic, there are a few things about the global warming issue that b

At the risk of being branded a heretic, there are a few things about the global warming issue that bother me. First, any scientific endeavor that is molded by preconceived notions, be they public opinion, political favor, faith, or heritage must be viewed with a suspicious eye by any respectable scientist. When I see people proudly flying the anti-creationism banner next to the global warming banner, I wonder if they really know or even care about the reasoning and science behind either.

Let's start with the coral reefs and CO2:
Carbon dioxide dissolved in water creates carbonic acid, which dissolves the calcium carbonate bodies of coral. Cooler water can contain a higher percentage of CO2 than warmer water, which is why corals do not generally live very deeply under water. As the oceans warm (presumably from global warming), it actually creates a more favorable environment for the precipitation of calcium carbonate shells and structures. It should be noted however, that warmer waters can also cause the death of zooxanthellae (a symbiotic algae that live in corals, providing them with nutrients and color) which in turn causes the "bleaching" of coral reefs. These algae are present in many, though not all corals, and the ability of different coral species to adapt to environments that are not favorable to the algae is largely unknown.
The point: Water temperature is just one of many many factors (current, turbidity, clarity, depth, dissolved gas, etc) that affects coral growth.

Now the ice cores:
It has been published over and over that current atmospheric CO2 levels are higher than they have been in the last 400,000 years. This is based on the Vostok ice core data, available here. The aspiring scientist will notice that the most recent CO2 concentration data begins at roughly 2000 years ago. This means that there is no ice core data for last year, or the last decade, or the last hundred years. The famous hockey-stick graph uses direct atmospheric sampling data from one location to "fill in" the missing data from another location and medium and then highlights the discrepancy. This is a violation of the scientific method and just poor laboratory procedure. But hey, an orange looks enough like an apple anyhow, right? Additionally, when the data is plotted, two things become evident:
1) CO2 concentration correlates very well with changes in temperature, indicating that there is definitely a relationship between the two (though not necessarily as simple as we would like to think.)
2) There are four events in the data that clearly show a rapid rise of atmospheric CO2 and temperature followed by a more gradual decline of the same. For those not in the know, that's the telltale sign of a negative feedback system. Said another way, long before humans started burning coal or driving cars, the Earth experienced similar episodes of global climate change, and each time it "recovered".

The Earth System clearly includes an incredibly complex system of feedback and compensation mechanisms, and it is nothing more than an a display of hubris and arrogance for one individual or entity to claim an absolute understanding of all of the processes... or to claim that "the debate is over."

It's been bit. Sorry. I've been up to my eyeballs. Let me explain.

First there was the cigar convention in Vegas. It was the usual- lots of fun yet extremely tiring. We got free food, drinks and parties. Got to see Lynard Skinnard live. Got hundreds of free cigars. What I didn't get was sleep. Or a moment to rest. I also got to spend A LOT of money.

However, we did go see Phantom of the Opera while I was there. I have wanted to see the Phantom since I was about 8 years old, when I would ride my bike down the street in California, listening to the original cast recording on a walkman. For years I wanted to see it. It came to Tucson one year, but I was studying abroad in German. I almost saw it in London once, but I couldn't afford it. So finally, after 20 years of waiting, I got to see the Phantom (or at least the Vegas version, which is 30 minutes shorter than the Broadway version). Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed by it all (although how can anything live up to 20 years of expectations?). The acting was a bit sub-par, at least on the part of the girl playing Christine. I'm not even convinced she was really singing the high parts, if she was, then her singing was excellent. But I kind of suspect she didn't have the pipes to pull that off. The guy playing the Phantom was good, though. The set though, was the real star of the show. It was just amazing. So many set changes, beautiful costumes, and the chandelier was as amazing as you've heard. All in all, I enjoyed it. I wish they hadn't cut out so much of the play, I could tell in certain parts where lyrics had been changed or a chunk of a song was missing. Anyways, I still think I need to see it on Broadway, but at least now I can say I've completed a life dream of mine.

We got back from Vegas last Thursday, but ever since we've been back I've been running around like crazy. I have to move into our new retail location August 1st, and our new duplex August 8th, so as you can imagine I have a ton of details running through my head. My contractor on the retail space told me I need to apply for my permits NOW, so I have to have blueprints drawn up this week and I have to pick out every material I want to use in the store and come up with dimensions so the contractor can give me a bid. As a result I've spent every day since I've been back going to tile stores, cabinet stores, restaurant supply stores, etc... I've been searching the net for the best prices and materials to use, and for pictures to inspire me. I've been to Home Depot more this week then I ever have before in my life. I have no idea what I'm doing! And of course, our lease isn't even signed yet. I'm supposed to have it today, tomorrow, some time soon, but I'm getting really anxious to lock this baby up so I can relax a bit and take a moment to celebrate before I dive back into the details. Speaking of details, did you know there are different kinds of ice machines that you can buy that give you different shapes of ice that are designed to fill up the cup more? For example, there is a certain kind that Wendy's, Taco Bell and other fast food restaurants use that basically ensures that you get less actual soda. Man, that's tricky! Also, you'd probably be amazed to learn than an ice machine costs between $800- $6000, depending on the size you want. It's just a freezer for heaven's sake!

Anyways, I have to get back to the grindstone. I'm taking a little break from my tasks until I have some more free time, I just can't do it right now. I think I'll be back with those next week. Oh, and for those of you wondering how my Olympic training is going, the answer is not well. I'm at about a 1:24 for a 100 backstroke, and the world record is 0:59, which was set this year. So I really have to shave about 30 seconds of my time. That's a lot!

ICE agents have just conducted another roundup of illegals, this time targeting an Ohio chain of Mexican restaurants. Eight restaurants yielded up 58 illegals. In other words, these restaurants were staffed almost entirely with illegals! The yield was small but the message to American employers is getting louder - we're coming after you!

I hope they shut down this chain. If not, the people of Ohio should boycott this chain until it's driven from the American landscape.

A big thank you goes out to ICE! Keep up the good work!

Again from North Carolina, what's wrong with these people, I would NEVER want to live there. Anyway, back to the point, again from North Carolina, another sign of the GREAT job the police are doing.

It was another dangerous mother, doing the horrible crime of driving. I'll just quote the rest of the story, because seriously people, I couldn't make this shit up even if I was paid to. From the News and Observer.

An illegal immigrant arrested on a traffic violation last month was forced to leave her three children on the shoulder of Interstate 85 in the middle of the night -- where they were alone and stranded for eight hours.

An Alamance County sheriff's deputy pulled Maria Chavira Ventura over just before 2 a.m. on June 14, according to arrest records. He took her to jail for driving without a license and displaying a false license plate, and she was eventually put under a federal deportation order. He left her children, 14, 10 and 6, with a man they barely knew, according to the N.C. Justice Center and Maryland social workers. He was a fellow church member who had been catching a ride with the family.

I'm just shocked by all the hypocrisy in the matter of enforcement. Many anti-immigrant advocates say that their problem is not with immigration, just with illegals. No, that's a lie. Their problem is with brown people because policies that give immigration powers to police that only go after Latinos. That's the truth. There is no way to differentiate between legal and illegal residents unless the assumption that all Latinos are illegal is made, which is what the anti people do. And please, don't say that's a lie, this is discrimination and demonization of an entire group of people. I thought America was better than this.

This Thursday, New Haven, Connecticut will mark its one-year anniversary as the first city in the nation to provide identification cards to undocumented immigrants which allow them access to local government services.

Despite harsh criticism and legal challenges the city has issued more than 6,000 Elm City Resident Cards since the program began last summer. Kica Matos, an administrator for New Haven's Community Development Dept., says that the city has benefited along with immigrants, especially in crime prevention, because immigrants no longer fear that local police will turn them over to federal immigration authorities if they come forward with information about a crime. She has also taken New Haven’s program on the road. Matos just returned from a trip to California, where she advised cities including Los Angeles, on how to create their own identity cards.

Hartford, Connecticut is also considering a proposal that would allow the city to qualify as a so-called “sanctuary city” for undocumented immigrants.

The Hartford Courant reports that in Connecticut’s capitol, the city council held a public hearing yesterday on an ordinance to ban police from inquiring about immigration status and arresting undocumented immigrants, unless they are part of a criminal investigation.

Cesar Torres, an undocumented immigrant, who was turned over to immigration officials by local police after he was an eyewitness to a crime and deported to Peru, publicly testified that fear of the police had prevented undocumented immigrants from cooperating in criminal investigations. As part of the proposal to ban police from asking about immigration status, Hartford will also extend social services to undocumented immigrants.

On the other end of the spectrum, harsh efforts to crack down on undocumented immigrants in Prince William County, Virginia have been labeled as indicative of, “an ugly nativist strain,” by the Washington Post in an editorial yesterday. Undocumented immigrants have fled the county, the Post writes, because of measures designed to harass and humiliate them – such as one proposed by the county board of supervisors to install cameras in police cars so interrogations of immigrants can be taped. Police in Prince William County are authorized to ask immigrants about their immigration status before arrests, and social services have been withheld. Local religious leaders wrote to the county warning that the crackdown was eroding social cohesion. But county officials defend their efforts to make the area a place where immigrants without legal papers dare not tread.

There’s a debate emerging in communities across the nation – from border towns in the Southwest to old capitols in the Northeast – on how to “deal with” undocumented immigrants. Many local and state governments, in the absence of an overarching federal law, have acted on their own, either extending the welcome mat to immigrants or creating laws that border on xenophobia.

The National Conference of State Legislatures reports that over 1,100 state and local measures have already been proposed this year. Particularly vitriolic fights have raged in smaller towns such as Hazelton, PA, Livingston, NJ, and Farmers Branch,TX, where local anti-immigrant legislation has been met with legal challenges from civil rights groups.

But can there be a happy medium? A small city in Connecticut, Danbury, with a population of a little more than 30,000 and a growing Brazilian immigrant community may be a place to watch. In February, the city adopted a federal program called 287(g) which trains and deputizes police officers to enforce immigration law. The legislation created a storm of debate and vehement protests by the local Brazilian community. Several months later tensions appear to have cooled and it appears to be business as usual. Day laborers still gather every day on the grassy lawn off Main Street waiting for local businesses and residents to pick them up for work. The police drive by and generally don't stop or conduct ID checks. Immigration status, at least for now, has yet to intrude on the daily routine.

A top rocket scientist has just joined the ranks of the scientists who doubt the connection between CO2 and global warming. It doesn't surprise me really, because I have done a lot of reading on the subject, but to the vast majority of Americans out there they may find this as a bit of a shock. We need to get the word out about how the environmentalism movement has been hijacked and how the most powerful politicians and businessmen out there stand to profit big off of the whole global warming lie. The below article is so powerful that I'll just let it speak for itself:

Top Rocket Scientist: No Evidence CO2 Causes Global Warming

Evans warns that the insistence on behalf of the man-made advocate establishment that “the debate is over,” despite the fact that a CO2 link to climate change “was merely asserted, not proved,” and the glee with which governments have adopted measures to fight global warming under this false assumption, will cause economies to be wrecked and as temperatures cool further, authorities will have to face charges of “criminal negligence” for deliberately lying to the public about climate change.

Evans’ public reversal of his position arrives on the back of two peer reviewed scientific papers, one of which documents how C02 emissions in fact cool the planet’s temperature and another that shows how the IPCC overstated CO2’s effect on temperature by as much as 2000 per cent.

As we reported last week, the world is cooling, sea levels are falling, ice is spreading, there are fewer extreme weather events, and it was hotter 1000 years ago, yet the myth of global warming is providing governments the excuse to micromanage every aspect of our lives, with Al Gore now openly calling for a carbon tax on the energy we use.

RELATED: No smoking hot spot

The critical piece to this whole puzzle is 'cui bono'? Why would every major corporation be pouring millions into advertising campaigns to convert the heathens and preach to the flock? The answer is simple: the carbon tax. Do yourself a favor and search for 'carbon tax' in google and see what you get. Just a hint, Al Gore has a stake in one of the companies that will be selling you your carbon credits. Think about that one for a minute. Conflict of interests anyone? How do you guys feel about this?
