are no longer the days of mustering much of anything.

These days I just do it.

Because I can and because I should and because I rarely do stuff like that anymore in a way that ends up with someone feeling as if I hit them in the stomach with a rubber mallet.

Wednesday night around 9 Ben's brother Zach went to the ER and ended up having his appendix removed at something like 2 in the morning.

But not before...

• getting a temperature of 103+ and
• barfing a few times and
• ending up having to have Tylenol by way of suppository and
• getting loopy on a nice hefty batch of pain killers and saying to his dad,

Hey!  I've got a suppository up my ass.  Whatta you got up yours?

And we all about fell out right there in his little ER hospital room and then he panicked a little bit because he felt like complete shit and so we comforted him while we were still laughing a little bit about what he said.

The next day the hospital staff had gotten

• forgetful about or
• fucked up around

the fact he was in their hospital and had just had surgery and an infection that had caused him to have a 103+ temperature and was supposed to continue having antibiotics.

So around 7 that night I just wrangled the nurse into the room and loved every moment of Dolly putting the nicey nice hurt on her until there was a pouch of antibiotics running into his IV.

And the whole time I was remembering what one of my recovery heroes taught me early in my recovery back in the days when I still though cussing people out was a good idea.

She asked,

Do you know what the difference between aggressive and assertive is?

I said,

I don't even give a shit about assertive.

She said,

Yeah, I can tell.  But do you want to know the answer anyway?

I said,

Sure.  Whatever.

She said,

Aggressive is saying 'fuck you' and assertive is saying 'fuck you' with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

I said,

Yeah, thanks.

She smiled and I thought,

Is she serious?  I still get to tell people 'fuck you'?

Not long after that a kind soul in recovery wrangled together something like 5 of us newcomers who all had something like 60 days clean or less and took us to a recovery camp out.

On the way home we stopped at a Dairy Queen and it took something like 45 minutes just to get a burger and our friend with a kind soul said,

I would really like to complain about this.

So one of us newcomers got up and got a 'comment card' and started filling it out and it ended up saying things like,

We're gonna blow this fuckin' place up with you and your shitty hamburgers in it!

and

You suck dirty cock!

and

I'll never fuckin' come back here unless I have TB and can spread it around!

and we gave it to our friend with a kind soul and he read it and tore it in half and said,

You're acting like a bunch of pussies,

and then got up and asked for the manager and they ended up having a rather long conversation where they were smiling and laughing and then the manager got him a free soda and then they shook hands and our friend with a kind soul walked past the table where we were all sitting with our mouths hanging open and said,

Come on you pussies, we're outta here.

And it was pretty quiet all the way home.

Today I drove to a little town about an hour north of here for some highly secretive and important business.

Actually, I've just followed my hair dresser wherever she goes and that's where she is right now and I was terribly overdue for a hair cut and various and sundry other things she does to my hair.

By overdue I mean, of course, that I had begun to appear as if I had gotten out of the shower one morning and promptly decided to stick my finger into a light socket.

And on the way there I clearly had too much time on my hands because I was seriously over analyzing the why's and what for's when it comes to the lines they paint on highways and roads to keep everyone in line.  This, of course, led me back to one thing I will probably be a little put out with for the rest of my life:

Timothy Leary for screwing up the good ride I've always believed lots and lots of people could have had with LSD just because he decided to get all kinds of jacked up and off the hook about a few rules.

Seriously, here were all these guys like Hofmann, Huxley, Hoffer and eventually Ram Dass who were motivated by helping others and themselves and here comes Leary with a bee in his bonnet or a spur under his saddle or something and jacking the whole thing up for everyone else to the point that LSD�research cannot even be legally done in the USA anymore.

And, of course, by the time I came into my own when it came to taking drugs LSD was loaded up with all kinds of crap that could really twist up a person's melon.

This is, of course, a coin with two very distinct sides because if it wasn't for a nightmarish trip I would have probably never decided to get clean again.

Seriously, there was just something about twisting up my melon to the point of thinking I was going to be one of those folks who couldn't manage getting a Dairy Queen burger to someone within a 45 minute period that did wonders for getting me back into recovery at a dead run.

If LSD was legal I wouldn't take it.  Even in a proper experimental setting.

But I sure do think it would be great if well meaning scientists could pick up where Hofmann and those other guys left off to see if they couldn't help a few people out.  Because goodness knows we all need a little bit (sometimes a lot) of helping out from time to time.

And now I'm sitting here wondering about several things.

1. I wonder what things would have been like if someone would have had the 'Do you know the difference between aggressive and assertive' chat with Timothy Leary?
2. One of my favorite quotes is, 'If you want to know the truth about a civilization just look at who they put in prison' and we sure do put lots and lots of mentally ill people in prison here in the USA
3. And I have this strange feeling that on the cusp of putting lots and lots of people in prison just because they disagree with the US government and I'm wondering how everything will go when we get completely fed up.
4. Which I also have a strange feeling we will.

I'm also sitting here thinking the universe must be conspiring in my favor because I get great breaks from that kind of thinking by seeing my brother-in-law laying around in a hospital asking his own dad what's up his butt and getting to have moments of saying 'fuck you' with a smile on my face and a song in my heart.

Como ya había comentado con algunos amigos, en estos días tenía un encargo bastante comprometido. Hacer las fotos de la comunión de mi sobrinilla.

Hace tiempo había visto algún album digital de Hofmann y después de leer un poco sobre el tema me decidí a meterme en este nuevo y apasionante submundo fotográfico. Aunque hay otras marcas yo me decidí por lo que ya había tenido en mis manos y elegí esta marca. A los pocos días de tener hecho el encargo vi que mi buen amigo Mauro publicaba una revisión estupenda sobre "Snappy Book Fotográfico Tamaño Gigante" y me propuso que yo hiciera esta otra... gran desafió, así que allá va. ¡¡Va por ti, Mauro!!

Primero hablaremos del proceso de edición. El programa se descarga desde la web del fabricante y se instala. No existe versión para Mac, sólo para windows. A la hora de instalarlo te pide el código de la tienda de fotografía a través de la que vas a "encargar" el album (virtualmente hablando, claro). Este código te lo facilitarán en tu tienda de fotos habitual. En algunas incluso lo publicitan en la web. Si no lo tienes en el momento puedes seguir adelante sin problemas, este código sólo es necesario al hacer el envío. Supongo que esto hará que a final de año Hofmann distribuya algunos beneficios a dichas tiendas en función de la cantidad de pedidos que reciba en su nombre... curiosa forma de mantener el canal :-)

Para montar las fotos, las procesé en RAW con el programa de siempre y luego las pasé a JPG con un  tamaño de 28 cms en el eje mayor y a 300 ppp (3307x2205 px). En general han servido bastante bien, salvo en alguna que quise hacer algo más de zoom (en el programa de montaje) y el programa me avisaba que estaba superando la tolerancia aconsejable para imprimir. En ese caso regeneré el JPG desde el RAW original con el encuadre que finalmente iba a usar y arreglado.

Tardé en total unas 3 tardes en montar un álbum de 44 páginas. Como era mi primera experiencia en el tema no partía de ningún boceto ni nada, con lo cual se pierde mucho tiempo en experimentar. Con las ideas claras se puede maquetar un álbum en una tarde.

Como curiosidad comentar que la mayoría de las plantillas y el propio álbum en si están pensados para formato de fotografía 3:4 así que un trocito de mis fotos en formato 2:3 siempre se perdía. Aunque esto no resultó nunca un problema, si que tuve que reencuadrar más fotos de las que pensaba originalmente para que dicho recorte quedara en la parte menos interesante de la foto.

Sobre el programa. Como calificación general le daría un 7.

Como cosas buenas tiene:

• Su facilidad de uso, si quieres algo muy estandar los puedes componer en una hora.
• Puedes hacer recortes directamente sobre las fotos que subas para elegir la parte que más te interese de la foto.
• Cuando cambias el formato de una hoja ya compuesta trata de mantenerte las fotos que ya has insertado. Esto ayuda a no olvidarse aquella maravillosa foto que querías incluir pero que no terminaba de quedar bien con la composición de la hoja elegida.
• Cuando cargas una plantilla de una hoja, puedes modificar el tamaño y las posición de las fotos. Incluso puedes incluir alguna más.
• Permite ver una simulación del resultado final bastante realista.
• VITAL: Te avisa cuando subes una foto con menos resolución de la necesaria. Para novatos como yo me ha ayudado mucho.
• Permite deshacer y rehacer con Ctrl+Z. Un gustazo para probar composiciones y ajustes.
• Cuando estás moviendo fotos te avisa de cuándo están alineadas con otra horizontal y/o verticalmente.
• El proceso de realizar el pedido mantiene el estado. Esto es fundamental, pues si a la mitad de subir el álbum (en mi caso unos 45 minutos) el proceso se para (y se paró unas 3 veces) al comenzar de nuevo sigue por el punto por donde iba.

Cosas mejorables:

• Se me quedó colgado un par de veces. Quizás fuera por mi Windows Vista... no lo se.
• El posicionamiento de las fotos y los tamaños se eligen siempre con el ratón.  Esto hace el programa muy intuitivo, pero a veces uno siente no tener suficiente control. Por ejemplo, yo eché de menos poder establecer en qué posición estaban las fotos para poder poner el mismo margen a fotos de la página derecha y fotos de la página izquierda. Eso sí, si usas las plantillas que vienen tal cual no tendrás este problema.
• En el tema de "capas" es mejorable, aunque si permite elegir qué foto está sobre otras.
• La relación de aspecto de un cuadro de foto sólo se puede cambiar antes de añadirle contenido. Luego sólo se puede modificar el tamaño no la relación. Esto hace que muchas veces tengas que borrar el contenido del cuadro, cambiarlo y volver a asociarle la foto... un poco latoso.
• No muestra ningún tipo de regla de medidas, con lo que la distribución de las fotos siempre es a ojo.

Sobre el proceso. Un 10.

Terminé de subir el álbum un lunes sobre las 8 de la tarde. A las 10 de la noche me llegó una confirmación por correo electrónico indicando que el pedido había sido recibido correctamente y con un código para poder comprobar el estado desde la web del fabricante. El jueves a las 13:50 me llegó otro correo diciéndome que el pedido salía de fábrica. El viernes a las 6 de la tarde llamó el transportista a casa (puedes elegir entre entrega en la tienda de fotografía o en casa).

Sobre el empaquetado. Un 7.

El libro te llega en un sobre de cartón duro con una forma algo especial para que las esquinas no sufran con los golpes.

En mi caso una esquina venía algo tocada pero el empaquetado cumplió su objetivo ya que como podéis ver hay separación suficiente entre la esquina del paquete y la del libro.

Al final, tras abrir el paquete, esto es lo que tenemos (la foto de la portada del libro la he cambiado con retoque posterior porque no quería a mi sobrina danzando por internet :roll:)

Claro... después de leer la review de Mauro sobre el snappy que viene en caja de madera sólo puedo ponerle un 7 :mrgreen:

Sobre el Album. Un 9.

Existen dos versiones para hacer el encargo. Una en impresión digital y otra en papel fotográfico. La segunda es más cara, aunque parece que también (lógicamente) tendrá una mayor calidad. Es por la que yo opté, aunque esto sólo influye a la hora de hacer el pedido, todo el maquetado es indistinto del formato final.

La calidad que se aprecia al cogerlo en las manos es estupenda. Las pastas son gruesas con una pequeña trama casi inapreciable (las pelusillas se quitan con un pañito, pero con la emoción ni siquiera lo hice cuando lo fotografié tal y como llegó :oops: )

Una vez abierto, las fotos salen estupendamente y el álbum se abre 180º sin problema, con lo que las composiciones a doble página se pueden apreciar muy bien.

Aquí podéis ver detalles las esquinas y el lomo.

En cuanto a tamaño, sólo los hay de 21x29 (o al menos parece que es su único producto en la web, no se si en las tiendas ofrecerán otros formatos). Aquí os dejo unas fotos para que os hagáis una idea aproximada de cómo queda.

Y respecto a la calidad de impresión, magnífica (ojo, que yo soy un novato en esto, eh), aunque en las hojas se aprecia quizás excesivo brillo. El papel tiene también una pequeña textura que aquí podéis ver (ojo, el brillo que se aprecia aquí es algo forzado en postproceso para poder resaltar la textura).

Y por último aquí os dejo una de las páginas resultantes (de nuevo para evitar fotos comprometedoras en Internet os la corto un poco).

En resumen es una estupenda pieza como regalo de Comunión.

Jeff Peckman of Denver, Colorado has promised the local city council a video that shows an alien peeping into a window. Did you know aliens peek? This video is suppossed to be a part of a documentary on the rise of alien visits. Jeff Peckman, who is pushing a ballot initiative to create an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission in Denver to prepare the city for close encounters of the alien kind, said the video is authentic and convinced him that aliens exist. Must be they stopped by to catch a Rockies game. Peckman said the public will have to wait to see it because it's being included in a documentary by Stan Romanek, a Colorado native who has reported UFO sightings. So, let's see, we have an alien video that is going to be shown to the local city commission later today, but no one else gets to view it. That's convincing. Maybe they are negotiating for a contract with Fox to show it, kind of like the "Alien Autopsy" thing was. "There is no doubt in my mind that (Stan Romanek, a Colorado native who has reported UFO sightings) did not post-produce this material. In other words, it's not a trick done in special effects," Jerry Hofmann, a professional film editor with more than 30 years of experience, said in a telephone interview. "I have equipment that will test to see if that shot was recorded originally on that tape, which it was," he said. All that says is it was actually shot on video tape with no post production work. OK, no digitally enhanced special effects. Hofmann continues, "The thing is about 4 feet tall. The only thing that shows up in the video is his head. It pops up from underneath a window. But his eyes blink. His cheeks move. He turns his head side-to-side. This would be a very elaborate puppet." It was very nice of that little alien to make sure they got frontal and profile views of him. Sort of reminds me of a mug shot. Well, the hype is on. The debate rages. Certainly the publicity groundwork is already done.  I can't wait for this on DVD. Maybe the special features will show how they faked the whole thing. "We found this guy at the carney and thought, wow he kind of looks like an alien. He did it for a pack of smokes and some beer." 

MARRIAGE PROPOSAL TRIGGERS UFO ALERT

Since we're on the subject, in Berlin, Germany, police suddenly received several phone calls from citizens saying they'd sighted UFOs and unusual lights flying above the town of Plattling. This proves how easily people are fooled into believing that aliens are everywhere. When police arrived they found a 29-year old man had just proposed to his girlfriend. He'd thought it would be romantic if he sent up 50 paper lanterns to go with his special moment. The girlfriend said yes. Not every light in the sky is a prelude to invasion.

RARE JAVAN RHINOS

These are the world's rarest rhinos. There are only around 70 Javan Rhinos in the wild, about 60 of which live in Ujung Kulon National Park on the western tip of Java island. The remainder live in Vietnam. In the first month of operation, five infrared video traps have captured two images of the camera-shy mother and calf, said Adhi Rachmat Hariyadi, head of the World Wildlife Federation's Ujung Kulon project. "It is very unusual to catch a glimpse of the Javan Rhino deep inside the rain forest," he said, adding the attacked camera was undamaged and put back on its stand the day after the incident. WWF officials say they plan to relocate several of the rhinos in the park to another part of Indonesia in the hope that they breed. Otherwise, they fear the species could be wiped out in the event of disease or natural disaster. Good luck with that one. I suspect they won't go quietly.

DOGS USED AS CAMPAIGNERS 

 In Bacau, Romania, one of the locals campaigning for mayor has come up with an arguably strange idea to get the word out on his campaign. He has turned a pack of stray dogs loose with posters saying "Vote for Radu Nicolau" on their backs. Local animal rights groups are infuriated calling it sick exploitation. I'm not sure how sick it is, but it is creative. Mr. Nicolau was unrepentent, saying: “I love dogs and they can spread the word about my campaign to lots of places quicker than me and my campaign team could.” Plus I suspect, they work for biscuits. There's nothing like turning loose a pack of dogs on your constiuents.

NANO-NOODLES AND NOODLE BOWL

In this Dec., 2006 photomicrograph released Thursday, May 29, 2008 by The Nakao Hamaguchi Laboratory of the University of Tokyo, a 'carbon nanotube ramen' in a bowl with diameter measuring one-thousandth of a millimeter (one-25,000th of an inch) produced by the university's mechanical engineering Prof. Masayuki Nakao and his students in a project aimed at developing nanotube-processing technology is shown. 'We believe it's the world's smallest ramen bowl, with the smallest portion of noodles inside, though they're not edible,' Nakao said. They wouldn't do much for the appetite anyway. It could be a new concept for dieting though. The microscopic bowl was first created in December 2006, but was only released Thursday after it was entered for a microphotography competition. The students said they did it for fun. OK I have a different definition of fun. Does girls and rice beer mean anything?

Erase una vez un joven científico suizo, llamado Albert Hofmann de 32 años, que trabajaba en los laboratorios Sandoz (Suiza) allá a finales del año 1938, estaba trabajando en un programa de investigación dirigido a encontrar posibles usos medicinales de los alcaloides del grupo ergolina, presentes en el cornezuelo del centeno. Tras sintetizar la ergobasina (sustancia uterotónica), empezó a trabajar en otros derivados amidas del ácido lisérgico. La dietilamida del ácido lisérgico es el vigésimo quinto derivado del ácido lisérgico que sintetizó, de ahí que se le llame LSD-25.

Hofmann pensaba que este descubrimiento serviría como analéptico, estimulante de los sistemas circulatorio y respiratorio y probó con animales, pero no se produjo el efecto que él esperaba, a parte los animales estaban bastante inquietos al ser expuestos a esta nueva sustancia. El estudio de esta nueva sustancia fue abandonado.

Pero un buen día de Abril de 1943 Hofmann volvió a experimentar con esta sustancia ya que según él tenía "un curioso presentimiento" y se puso a sintetizar de nuevo el LSD-25, pero ésta vez mientras sintetizaba comenzó a notar inquietud y un pequeño mareo y se fue a casa. Una vez allí descansando en su cama, comenzó a notar un estado parecido a la ebriedad pero agradable, notaba una estimulación notable de la imaginación y con los ojos cerrados en un estado de ensueño comenzó a ver formas y colores vivos de con formas caleidoscópicas, este estado le duró unas dos horas mas o menos. Hofmann se dio cuenta que estos efectos fueron producidos cuando le calló en la mano una pequeña cantidad de LSD y fue absorbido vía cutánea. 3 días después decidió ingerir una cantidad mayor para probar estos extraños efectos, ese día sería conocido como "el día de la bicicleta".

El 19 de Abril de 1943 se produjo la primera "tripada" de la historia. Hofmann ingirió 250 µg de LSD pensando, por su experiencia con otros alcaloides ergóticos, que sería la dosis mínima y rápidamente averiguó en sus carnes que el LSD era mucho mas potente que cualquier sustancia conocida hasta entonces.

El LSD empezaba a hacer efecto en el organismo de Hofmann, se dio cuente de que le costaba hablar de forma inteligible y pidió a su asistente de laboratorio, que estaba al tanto del experimento, que le acompañase en su viaje a casa en bicicleta. Durante el trayecto a casa en bici, los efectos empezaron a ser más fuertes y comenzó a ver todo ondulado, como si mirásemos un espejo cóncavo. Aunque viaja en bici rápidamente el notaba como si estuviera inmóvil hasta que llegó a casa, pidió leche a su vecina por sus efectos contra envenenamientos y avisó al doctor. Éste no notó nada anormal salvo que Hofmann tenía las pupilas dilatadas. Hofmann estuvo bastante rato sufriendo un "mal viaje" pensando que estaba poseído, que su vecina era una bruja etc. Así que se acostó en la cama, donde poco a poco comenzó a sentir una sensación agradable, volviendo el juego de colores y formas, incluso tuvo en episodio de sinestesia cuando oyó el ruido de un coche que pasaba por allí. Al día siguiente despertó con la mente clara y despejado, lo único que sentía un pequeño cansancio corporal. Desayunó y al salir al jardín se percató que sus sentidos estaban mucho más sensibles de lo normal y ésta sensación le duró todo el día. Se puede decir que ese día se dio la primera "tripada" de la historia.

E' morto all'età di 102 il chimico svizzero Albert Hofmann. Nel 1943 scoprì l'Lsd, 'la droga magica' che tra la fine degli anni sessanta e l'inizio dei settanta ebbe una influenza fondamentale nella cultura della Beat generation. Hofmann iniziò la sperimentazione su se stesso e descrisse le prime esperienze scientifiche psichedeliche della storia. Durante gli esperimenti incorse in varie e pericolose overdose, dalle quali uscì indenne e senza alcun danno alla sua materia grigia, tanto da arrivare lucido all'età di 102 anni.

Lo scienziato, nato l'11 gennaio 1906 a Baden, è morto ieri nella sua casa di Basilea, secondo quanto riporta oggi il sito californiano del Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, a pochi giorni di distanza dalla scoperta che lo rese famoso. Il 16 aprile del 1943, un venerdì pomeriggio, mentre lavorava nei laboratori del gruppo farmaceutico svizzero Sandoz di Basilea, una piccola quantità di questa sostanza gli scivolò su una mano durante un esperimento di laboratorio. Subito percepì "una significativa irrequietezza, unita ad un lieve capogiro" e decise di bloccare il suo lavoro. "Arrivato a casa", raccontò, "mi stesi e caddi in uno stato non spiacevole, con sintomi simili all'intossicazione, caratterizzati da una immaginazione estremamente stimolata".

[...]Con la diffusione dell'acido lisergico, la Cia e l'esercito americano dimostrarono il loro interesse per l'allucinogeno come strumento di lotta politica e militare (così come avvenne per l'Mdma, le amfetamine e la cannabis). Iniziarono così una serie di esperimenti segreti che prevedevano la somministrazione inconsapevole a numerosi soldati e civili.

Albert Hofmann dió con la LSD por casualidad, investigando con los alcaloides del cornezuelo del centeno. Durante la manipulación de uno de los compuestos (el 25), una gota cayó sobre su mano. Al rato, comenzó a sentirse indispuesto para el trabajo y decidió regresar a casa, como siempre en su bicicleta. En ese trayecto, los efectos de la LSD se le hicieron claramente manifiestos, revelándole una realidad durante mucho tiempo oculta a los hombres.

Hofmann sintetizó también la psilocibina, entre otras muchas sustancias dispares como la reserpina (vía Drogoteca), pero su labor trasciende la del mero químico. Con la creación de diversos alcaloides procedentes de plantas y hongos enteógenos, Hofmann estableció un puente entre el siglo XX y la antigüedad, entre la sociedad materialista de Occidente y los pueblos indígenas del mundo.

La LSD, el hijo problemático de Hofmann (como él la bautizó), creo que puede ser considerada una de las sustancias más importantes del pasado siglo. En principio fue aplicada a la medicina psiquiátrica, pero los 60, los hippies, y la contracultura hicieron de ella el pilar sobre el que fundar aquella revolución.

La LSD fue el psiquedélico clave de los 60 y 70, alentado por gentes tan dispares como Timothy Leary, los Beatles o Aldous Huxley. Más importante que sus efectos inmediatos sobre la percepción, era cómo el individuo percibía la realidad tras una ingesta de LSD. Algo había cambiado en su interior y poco sentido tenía ya la sociedad capitalista y sus devenires.

Así las cosas, el "establishment" estadounidense se vio ante un peligroso enemigo que lo amenazaba. Por eso comenzó a sacar partidas de LSD adulterada que hicieron estragos entre los hippies.

Ya no hizo falta nada más. Los relatos (ciertos, falsos y leyendas urbanas) sobre jóvenes enloquecidos por esa sustancia corrieron como la pólvora y la dietilamida de ácido lisérgico fue condenada al listado de sustancias prohibidas de la ONU.

Albert Hofmann experimentó cerca de una treintena de veces con LSD y otras sustancias y plantas psiquedélicas. Sin embargo, nadie diría de él que es un yonki o un drogata. Hofmann, fue un señor respetable, un venerado científico propuesto al Premio Nobel.

Su legado más importante son todas esas sustancias psicoactivas que sintetizó y que, después de la borrachera prohibicionista, vuelven a la primera línea del debate médico internacional; y desde ciertos sectores se vuelve a pedir que el LSD sea reconsiderado como fármaco remedio de, por ejemplo, trastornos obsesivo-compulsivos, alcoholismo y drogodependencias y tratamientos del dolor.

Éste es mi pequeño homenaje. Albert Hofmann ha muerto, ¡viva la LSD!

Tem coisas que são para acontecer. A idéia do Leonidas explica ! já existia faz um tempo. Mas, dia 29 de Abril, por motivos pessoais, o BLOG entrou no ar com a vontade de ter um conteúdo despojado, sem vínculo apelativo, apenas ilustrando assuntos que julgo interessantes.

Bom, o ponto é que, no mesmo dia, o grande messias da última palavra que aparece no subtítulo do BLOG, morreu. Albert Hofmann, ao tentar descobrir anti-coagulantes e controladores de pressão à partir de plantas, se deparou com um fungo que nascia no centeio - ergot - e sem querer sintetizou e descobriu o LSD em 1938. Porém, as pesquisas foram interrompidas e só foram retomadas em 1943, quando Hofmann refez a experiência e absorveu um pouco da nova substância pela ponta dos dedos. Poucos dias depois, resolveu ingerir parte da substância e, entregue às novas sensações ainda desconfortantes, pegou sua bicicleta e voltou para casa.

Ich konnte nur noch mit größter Anstrengung verständlich sprechen, und bat meine Laborantin, die über den Selbstversuch informiert war, mich nach Hause zu begleiten. Schon auf dem Heimweg mit dem Fahrrad […] nahm mein Zustand bedrohliche Formen an. Alles in meinem Gesichtsfeld schwankte und war verzerrt wie in einem gekrümmten Spiegel. Auch hatte ich das Gefühl, mit dem Fahrrad nicht vom Fleck zu kommen. Indessen sagte mir später meine Assistentin, wir seien sehr schnell gefahren. [Zu Hause angelangt] wurden Schwindel und Ohnmachtsgefühl zeitweise so stark, daß ich mich nicht mehr aufrecht halten konnte und mich auf ein Sofa hinlegen mußte. Meine Umgebung hatte sich nun in beängstigender Weise verwandelt. […] die vertrauten Gegenstände nahmen groteske, meist bedrohliche Formen an. Sie waren in dauernder Bewegung, wie belebt, wie von innerer Unruhe erfüllt. Die Nachbarsfrau […] war nicht mehr Frau R., sondern eine bösartige, heimtückische Hexe mit einer farbigen Fratze. etc. etc.“

El LSD (Lyserg Säure-Diäthylamid, o en castellano, Dietilamida del Ácido Lisérgico) es uno de los alcaloides presentes en el cornezuelo del centeno; el cornezuelo fue empleado por los chinos en obstetricia, para contraer el útero y evitar las hemorragias en el postparto, y era conocido como una potente droga en Europa.

El 16 de abril de 1943 Hofmann tuvo que abandonar el laboratorio presa de mareos y una extraña sensación de intranquilidad. Al llegar a casa, se acostó y sufrió una serie de alucionaciones: "me penetraban sin cesar unas imágenes fantásticas de una plasticidad extraordinaria y con un juego de colores intenso, caleidoscópico..."

En un par de horas desaparecieron estos efectos, pero Hofmann rápidamente comprendió que era la substancia que estaba sintetizando la causante de los mismos: una mínima cantidad debía haber sido absorbida por su organismo a través de la piel y había provocado el curioso efecto.

Poco después Hofmann decidió practicar un autoensayo con una cantidad mayor de LSD, pero esta vez sus alucinaciones no fueron nada agradables: mientras anotaba las primeras impresiones sobre lo que estaba experimentando, Hofmann empezó a darse cuenta de que perdía el habla y a duras penas pudo pedir a su ayudante del laboratorio que lo llevase a casa. Aquella noche Hofmann sufrió el primer mal viaje de LSD constatado científicamente y recogido en sus propios escritos:

"...Todo lo que había en la habitación estaba girando, y los objetos y muebles familiares adoptaron formas grotescas y generalmente amenazadoras. Se movían sin cesar, como animados, llenos de un desasosiego interior. Apenas reconocí a la vecina que me trajo leche -en el curso de la noche bebí más de dos litros-. No era ya la señora R., sino una bruja malvada y artera con una mueca de colores. Pero aún peores que estas mudanzas del mundo exterior eran los cambios que sentía en mí mismo, en mi íntima naturaleza. Todos los esfuerzos de mi voluntad de detener el derrumbe del mundo externo y la disolución de mi yo parecían infructuosos. En mí había penetrado un demonio y se había apoderado de mi cuerpo, mis sentidos y el alma. Me levanté y grité para liberarme de él, pero luego volví a hundirme impotente en el sofá. La sustancia con la que había querido experimentar me había vencido. Ella era el demonio que triunfaba haciendo escarnio de mi voluntad. Me cogió un miedo terrible de haber enloquecido. Me había metido en otro mundo, en otro cuarto con otro tiempo. Mi cuerpo me parecía insensible, sin vida, extraño. ¿Estaba muriendo? ¿Era el tránsito? Por momentos creía estar fuera de mi cuerpo y reconocía claramente, como un observador externo, toda la tragedia de mi situación..."
