This painting is getting towards a finished state now. Working through this piece has moved my ideas forward significantly. Mostly I have learned what qualities i dont want in a painting. Lilly has been an interesting experiment. She may feature in an exhibition in September in Solihull! So if your interested in seeing her in the flesh(paint) that could be your only chance! Ill keep you posted about upcoming shows!

*Tied to Cinexcellence’s Unseen-Movie-Blog-a-thon
This weekend, or at least this Friday, I

*Tied to Cinexcellence's Unseen-Movie-Blog-a-thon

This weekend, or at least this Friday, I've decided to have a Sam Peckinpah double-feature. Straw Dogs and The Wild Bunch, two movies I've never seen but I thought it was about time to.

First up was Straw Dogs, the kind of movie I pass every single time I'm at the video store as I search through the endless sea of Dramas. I've heard fairly good things about this film, and with Dustin Hoffman along for the ride, how bad can it be? It can be good... but not great.

This film follows a man by the name of David Sumner, played by Hoffman, and his wife Amy as they find refuge in the English country side. While David tries to write a book, Amy catches up with her old pals, who aren't as friendly as they used to be. David's cowardly nature only leads to brutality inflicted upon the ones he loves and a man can only be pushed so far.

I'm sad to say the only Peckinpah film I had seen before this was The Getaway an awesome flick with Steve Mcqueen. His use of slow motion continuously throughout scenes of violence make the violence that much more real. Have you ever been in a situation where something crazy happens, like a car crash? When you describe it to friends and family, don't you say "It's like it was in slow motion."? Well, I may not have ever been in a car collision but I've had some nutty stuff happen to me and I'll be damned if I didn't say that.

Anyways, that is what this whole film feels like. It feels like the retelling of a gruesome and horrific event to friends and family. I suppose that means that did a good job since it was adapted from a book.

The best thing about this film is that it doesn't sugar coat shit (and by shit I literally mean feces). It doesn't wrap the turd up in fancy paper and place a little cherry on top. The movie is about the raw emotionality of two people who are slowly torn apart by obsession with one's projects, and a terrible force that wants to prove a point.

I didn't like what Hoffman's character became though. I suppose this ties into them not sugar coatin' the shit, and I guess this is the prime example. Hoffman becomes mean, and at one point threatens to snap Amy's neck if she doesn't listen to him. Part of me appreciates that Peckinpah chose to go in this route, but the other part thinks it goes to dark.

And THAT is what I love about this movie. It doesn't care how dark it becomes, because it is supposed to become that dark. My complaint should not be taken seriously as it isn't a serious complaint, it's actually a compliment towards the director and actor's capability to completely flip what we thought we knew about the character and create something new and frightening.

After watching "Charlie Wilson's War" with my lovely wife, I'm convinced of one thing and one thing only:

I would pay money to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman fistfight a bear wearing his costume from this film.

This goes back to a comment made when "Boogie Nights" came out and, in film class at an accredited university, we had a 20-minute discussion about which character from the film would win in a fight versus a bear.

I won.

Oh, and the movie was very well made. Aaron Sorkin wrote it, so it still has that "everything they do is important" feel that all his stuff seems to have, whether the maniacal energy of the White House or the maniacal energy of a late-night comedy show or the maniacal energy of a sports show. I'd love to see him and Mamet team up to write something. I'd imagine it to be ten men running around in a circle (two of which are Joe Mantegna and Ricky Jay), chests puffed out, screaming "fuck" a lot.

Just watched “Rain Man” this afternoon and we have to say, we were definitely pleasantly surprised. Not usually our type of film – you know, no action, drama, or psychological thrills (unless you want to count some exceptionally good mathematics from Dustin Hoffman) but we gave it a go and we’re glad we did. “Rain Man” is the story of an autistic man (Dustin Hoffman) and his cocky, money grabbing long-lost brother (Tom Cruise) and the way they relate to each other.

~And old quote but I first heard it in Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles" was one of Lestat's everlasting quotes.

"We are here to make a better world. No amount of rationalization or blaming can preempt the moment of choice each of us brings to our situation here on this planet. The lesson of the '60s is that people who cared enough to do right could change history. We didn't end racism but we ended legal segregation. We ended the idea that you could send half-a-million soldiers around the world to fight a war that people do not support. We ended the idea that women are second-class citizens. We made the environment an issue that couldn't be avoided. The big battles that we won cannot be reversed. We were young, self-righteous, reckless, hypocritical, brave, silly, headstrong and scared half to death. And We Were Right."

~Abbie Hoffman

"You just get stoned, get the ideas in your head and just do 'em. And don't bullshit. That's the thing about doin' that geurrilla theatre. You be prepared to die to prove your point."

""Smoking dope and hanging up Che's picture is no more a commitment than drinking milk and collecting postage stamps. A revolution in consciousness is an empty high without a revolution in the distribution of power. We are not interested in the greening of Amerika except for the grass that will cover its grave."

~ A.H

"Become an internationalist and learn to respect all life. Make war on machines, and in particular the sterile machines of corporate death and the robots that guard them."

~A.H

"We must bear in mind that imperialism is a world system, the last stage of capitalism-and it must be defeated in a world confrontation. The strategic end of this struggle should be the destruction of imperialism. Our share, the responsibility of the exploited and underdeveloped of the world, is to eliminate the foundations of imperialism: our oppressed nations, from where they extract capital, raw materials, technicians, and cheap labor, and to which they export new capital-instruments of domination-arms and all kinds of articles, thus submerging us in an absolute dependence."

~Che

"Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. . . . It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk anything, you risk even more."

~Erica Jung

"The relationship between rock and revolution is granting that most musicians are a bunch of avaricious ass-sucking dogs, and most of the song writers (too), myself in many ways included. It's the form or the intention, or the implications of the music that make it interesting to the revolutionary. It's a tool and a tactic for getting children to revolt against the protoplasm that raised them and consider other forms of government, other forms of dealing with the situation. When you coordinate and liberate and release the sexuality and the minds of youth, and can twist it and change it toward a different goal and direction, via rock 'n roll, via fucking in the streets, via dope, via action, direct action ... then you can maybe push this country and we can rewrite the whole structure, based on the kind of energy released by rock 'n roll."

It was the ultimate 30th birthday present for Rob O'Hara. His wife joined forces with friends and family in 2003 to bring a dream of his to life in the Yukon, Oklahoma, couple's backyard.

The group converted a workshop into an arcade by painting the walls, laying black-and-white carpet and hanging decorations. The result reignited one of O'Hara's life-long passions, and the arcade now houses between 20 and 30 games.

"My friends love going out back, dropping a quarter into one of the machines and reliving their youth," said O'Hara, author of "Invading Spaces: A Beginner's Guide to Collecting Arcade Games."

As video gamers across the nation follow news this week from the E3 Media and Business Summit in Los Angeles, California, a few are wondering whether the video-gaming industry has lost an essential piece of its founding spirit.
"The problem with the industry is simply that they are trying to build this 'wow factor' -- graphics, life-like, controversial content -- which in turn limits games' replay capability," said Matt Scharboneau of Jacksonville, Florida. "So many of the games are in a story-based setting, once completed, you are done. Why play the same thing again?" Video Watch video from E3 »

This lack of plug-in-and-playability -- which made older, simpler games so instantly accessible -- has some gamers feeling a bit nostalgic.
Scharboneau owns four classic video-arcade games: Data East Jurassic Park, Data East Star Wars, Gottlieb Gladiators and an upright 1981 Ms. Pac-Man.

"Nothing beats the T-rex eating the ball, then burping," he said.

Andrea Rane of Columbia, Missouri, refuses to play anything but old-school games. Her husband, Erik Hoffman, had eight systems until just recently. He saved all of them from the time he was a kid, including two Atari consoles, an original NES, a Super Nintendo and a Coleco Vision.

"I just think a lot of the games that are being released today don't have the same playability," Hoffman said. "Even a game like Frogger is a complex puzzle." iReport.com: What's your favorite all-time game?

For other gamers like Jonathan Stanley, video games of the past are simply a part of who he is. Stanley and best friend Michael Tilly used to play all the time with Stanley's then-brand-new Odyssey 2 game system when they were boys in 1979.

"If nothing else, that old gaming system got me interested in computers, very interested," said Stanley, who lives in Anthony, Florida. "In 1980, I took my first computer course at school on a TRS-80 Model I, and it was love at first sight."

Today, Mike and Jonathan are still friends, and both have careers in the computer field.

"It's amazing how something as simple as playing some almost-laughable games almost 30 years ago could have led us down the path to where we are today," Stanley said.

Ohio Student Wins Top Honor

"If someone who not only saves lives but also boosts community spirit isn't a hero, then I don't know who is."

That's what Joseph Wayne Pavlisko, a recent graduate of Kirtland High School in Kirtland, Ohio, had to say about his father, a firefighter and paramedic with the South Euclid fire department.

Joseph was this year's first place, $10,000 winner in the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) Youth Scholarship Program. The NBFAA Youth Scholarship Program provides $21,000 in scholarships annually to children of police officers and firefighters. Applicants are judged on their academic achievements, community activities and essay written about their law enforcement or firefighter parent. To date, NBFAA has awarded more than $270,000 in scholarships.

To achieve this honor, Joseph first won the Ohio Burglar & Fire Alarm Association Youth Scholarship Program and then competed with other state winners from around the country for the national prize.

In his essay, he said nothing changed his view of his father more than the events of September 11, 2001.

"At the time, I had no clue what the World Trade Centers were. I didn't understand the mammoth tragedy that had just shaken the American people to their core. I didn't appreciate the newfound patriotism the USA would unearth within itself. But for the first time in my life, I realized just how important, how absolutely essential, firefighters are to our society," Joseph wrote.

His father, Joseph, Sr., described his son as very brave, recounting the time he left for Germany for a year at age 15 as part of a foreign exchange program.

"I didn't want him to go because I thought he was too young but he persisted and we agreed. He went to Germany not knowing a lick of German and returned a year later fluent in the language," said Joseph, Sr.

His bravery and independence continue to be strong traits as Joseph will be attending the University of Alabama in the fall - nearly 800 miles away from his family.

"He's braver than I am," his father said. "I love him, I'm proud of him and I can't wait to see what he does."

The second place winner, Mallory Horner of Asheboro, N.C., will receive a $7,500 scholarship from NBFAA. Mallory is a graduate of Eastern Randolph High School and has been accepted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her father, Eric Hoffman, is a North Carolina State Trooper and Chief of the East Side Fire Department in Randolph County.

Emilee Geedey of Lewistown, Pa. took third place in the Youth Scholarship Program, winning a $2,500 scholarship. She is a graduate of the Lewiston Area High School where her father, Richard Geedey, is a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper.

In addition to the NBFAA scholarship, each state winner receives a scholarship from their individual state association. Students who reside in states without a chartered NBFAA chapter or in a state with a non-participating state association submit their applications directly to the NBFAA, which chooses one applicant to compete against the state winners as the national nominee. This year, NBFAA chose Alyssa Rosson, a graduate of Westmoore High School in Oklahoma City, as their national nominee and awarded her a $1,000 scholarship for her acheivements.

About NBFAA

¿Por qué has salido, estúpido?"
