u KNOW WHAT. i totally came out laughing. cuz of sam. she was so funny. we literally ran past the last "ghost" guarding the exit door. it was rather scary inside and we kept screaming for nth until my stomach hurts like hell (like after u laugh for forever that kind of hurt). then we kept screaming and refused to move and this person came and say "if u dont continue walking ur not going to get out of here" lol. then we still too scared to move. then i think somehow i grabbed the wrong person in the dark. iwas supposed to be grabbing sammy then skarly i heard someone say "ur holding onto me" who doesnt sound like sammy. lol. then in the end the person got annyoed and hold ur hands and led us saying "follow me". then inside we kept screaming "BILL KAULITZ IS HOT!!!!" to annoy the ghosts in there. lol. there was a mirror. rather freaky. i dont dare to look in it. dunno what mught come out from behind. then the floor always got ppl use like feather duster to touch ur legs. Okay anyway today was funfair, and I loved it{: I went to Victoria's haunted house twice, because she asked me to support her class so ya. The first time I went with Prisca, Gwen and Clarice. And all of us didn't want to stand at the back, so we played siccors paper stone to decide. AND I LOST SO I STOOD AT THE BACK -.- It was fun standing at the back. The scariest thing was when we were walking and then suddenly one of the 'ghosts' put her shoulders on mine, and said, "This is so scary." Then I was like screaming la LOL! The haunted house rockxzxzxzxzxzx Many of us went in together, me, Carina, Joei, Yi Yan, Hanzhi, Pui Jeng, Michelle, Yi Yun, Gennie (Pui Jeng's batchmate) & one more of Pui Jeng's batchmate. I remember there's 11 of us but i think i forgot one/there's only 10 of us whe went in together :X Anyway, Carina backed out when she just stepped into the classroom :/ Wasn't that scary though, but was kinda funny/fun. The part the person asking riddle was super funny (: Yi Yan kept on asking the person to repeat the riddle, which was damn cute/funny (!) I went to the haunted house in the science block there one. Very funny. I went in with two scaredy ppl joyce and liwei and they practically screamed at evrything. There was this clothes hanger hanging dunno what clothes la. the haunted house ppl pushed the clothes hanger(which was hanging on a piece of string to the ceiling or something) and joyce plus liwei screamed. another time, there was this double sided mask with light coming thru from inside by the holes of the eyes and they pushed it again and the two ppl in front of me screamed another time. liwei was saying joyce's scream was infectious and got herself to screaming too. haha. so basically, it was joyce doing all the screaming. so cool rite? i am SO looking forward to the next fun fair. maybe our class should do a haunted house special too. (:

Like, it's so expensive but their's is supposedly the best, I went to theirs last year which for 3 bucks but I think that was better than this year's. But yes, I know I was screaming thru the whole thing but that's cos I thought it'd be scary. I closed my eyes anyway, but when I opened it I just saw ppl with white masks. I think the only scary element is that it's based on a true story. And they grab ur legs. Mingzhen was apologising all the way !

Guess what? That's a lot more than last year's. Guess what? We're highest earning class for the entire NYGH... SECOND TIME IN A ROW! Beat that!

Let's recap. Compared to last year, 2008 is well-prepared. Compared to all other classes, we're like a Last-Minute Rushing CHAMPION. But come on, we hug buddha's feet for everything. Class parade, the algorithm march, even classroom cleanups.

So we started the morning with some problems, and ended the day on a huge, huge high.

Here's the route as I remember

Sometimes for the heck of it me and Lucy stick our hands out and try to grab blindly.
Zimin stands there in her clinched-waist red toga. She has this monk-like weapon.
TURN INTO WALKWAY 2
Lucy would act like this bloody big dead thing with her mask, then suddenly come to life.
Tracy is at the end doing some creepy imitation of this horror movie character and grabs wildly (CANNOTREMEMBERSHIT) Sometimes i am caught unaware and freaks out. =.=
PEOPLE ARE OFTEN TRAPPED HERE, BUT THEY TURN INTO WALKWAY 3
Someone grabs legs. My fingers kena stepped on.
A mask suddenly drops. Sometimes Jac uses as projectile and swings at people.
Lijun leaps wildly. Small toga-donning form proves too much for humans.
Limmin dressed as Darth Vader lowers this costume thing.
Yixian crawls out from behind mirrors.
(the sad thing is, sometimes people are blinded by the dropping the costume, and fail to notice the enthusiastically-crawling Yixian)

Chewfei is behind a creepy costume thing and shakes it menancingly at people.
Elysia pulls up her short skirt comes to life and freaks people out.

EXCITING THINGS:

# Almost everyone had something to do! Here we thank: people who helped in set-up, the runners for coordinating, the people who bought the food for us poor suffering souls inside, mascots, and the ticket sales counter people!

# First and foremost, my costume was very disgusting. (: But heck care la so dark anyway we don't need to look like models.

# I suspect more people cried this year than last. Aiyoh a bit sad >.>

# Some were really freaked out and just covered their eyes for the entire journey and whimpering. Same as above, I kinda feel sad for them.

# On a similar but much more amusing note, one girl went berserk, screamed and tried running through the entire thing. She got stuck at Chewfei, and screamed her head off again. Her friend, who was with her, was very lost. Running slowly but cannot see anything. And because she was running through walkway 3, EVERYONE sprang into action at around the same time. the mask, costume and lijun all leapt down simultaneously, and Yixian crawled with extra enthusiasm.

# Weird group of people kept declaring their love for Phil Collins to keep their head on.

# There was one group that majorly pissed me off. They said some really, really aggravating shit. *boils with fury inwardly* I mean I tolerate if you need to proclaim your love for Phil Collins to keep yourself brave, but like, you don't say that kind of things about the people you paid to entertain you. D<

# Another thing that pissed me off was the stupid group who had a camera and took flash photography EVERYWHERE! They were reasonably nice (maybe just freaked out) when I told them to put it away, but which... toot uses a haunted house as some sightseeing trip? Anyway, decided on a new rule: NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY! (:

# Did you know the empty seats are for... the spirits? Somehow all the people in walkway 1 would be freaked out and PLONK on the chairs. Now you are cursed for life, yo.

# NYPS kids are damn brave la! They don't squeal and scream as much as all NYGH-ers. Be ashamed!! D:

# Don't think we did as much as last year for publicity, but we had a lot of people coming for the reputation. And because I told all my little friends about it (finally you can be ridded of my "WHat YouR CLAss DoIng FOr FUNFAIRRRRR??" and "COME OK U BETTER". Posters were awesome though :D:D By far the nicest!

# Free light sticks used as weapons. Eh some toot swiped my masked face with an orange lightstick!! *blinded and in pain*

# Mr Tan coming in with some teachers and frightening them. Mr Tan was acting tough as usual (but you know how badly he's wounded for not winning Fashion Rojak!)

# Someone said I was VICTORIA LEH! Admittedly I was wearing a mask but... *looks dismally at short hair and blunt fringe*

# Then again, people identified Zimin as Miao. Now I'm mortified.

# Dancing wildly when nobody's looking = awesome.

# Trying my best to untie strings and take off pants = terrible ordeal

# Jac's talent at haunted house scares. We've found a career for Jac! But indeed she came up with some really cool shit. Kudos, immature friend.

# We earned 600 last year and charged 3 dollars. This time 1000 with 4 dollars charge. IMPROVEMENT!

# Well, two time HIGHEST EARNING CLASS is just THAT WOW!! (: I'm so proud for earning highest when we were only Sec 3, and this year for hitting the 1k. When Chiling was announcing highest earning class 413 was like "Get ready to jump!" and when she said "four threee" I felt like I had just been murdered.
But anyway mispronounciations aside I WAS SO HAPPY AND BURSTING WITH JOY. Heck care what Model Class Cleanest Class, we contributed the MOST to this year's funfair (1/22) and that's a hugeass feat :D Afterwards I was HIGH-ing with everyone and roaring "FOURTHIRTEEN" all the way up.

I am so bloody proud of you fourthirteen! For all the awesome effort put in, at risk of suffocation and bodily injury. Now I can die in peace when I flunk my blocks.

Some people said that 312 had really awesome makeup and that 301 had awesome mascots :D Well keep up the good work and try to keep the tradition of pwnage Haunted Houses alive!

And spotlight has to go to 406 as well!!! They earned SO MUCH MONEYY selling FOOD. That's like so woah. and two years in a row somemore. They need major kowtowing!  Haha I think next year without us  the funfair won't earn as much la ): But that's up to the juniors XD So kudos to 406 SECOND HIGHEST EARNING CLASSSS

Verbal abuse is a kind of battering which doesn’t leave evidence like physical abuse does. However, it can be just as painful, and recovery can take much longer. The victim of abuse lives in a gradually more confusing realm. In public she is with one man, in private he becomes another. Often, for the verbally abused woman (man), there is no witness to her reality and no one to understand her experiences. Friends and family continue to see her ex, the abuser, as a really good guy and, certainly, he agrees with them. The verbal abuser, while maintaining his charm with others, always takes his abuse behind closed doors. It is a means of holding power over his wife( husband) /partner.. Many women and some men leave a marriage and come back into the singles’ world with the diminished self-esteem that comes from a verbally abusive relationship. The fact that many of these women (men) have never even realized that they were being abused, makes it easy for them to enter another abusive relationship. A verbal abuser is an insecure person and immature person who is looking for power and control over another.In order to help you recognize abuse, remember that all forms of verbal abuse are methods of manipulating you for the purpose of establishing power over you. The following are some of the forms of verbal abuse the author helps you recognize.

1. Withholding: a purposeful, silent treatment.
2. Countering: a countering of your ideas, feelings, and perceptions, even going so far as to refute what he misconstrues you to have said.
3. Discounting–a putdown of you or something you hold dear.
4. Blocking and diverting–this is a sneaky, covert way of violating your dignity.
5. Accusation and blame: generally involves lies about the partner’s intentions, attitudes, and motives. The author states that accusation and blame is present in all verbally abusive relationships.
6. Judging and criticizing: lies about your personal qualities and performance.
7. Trivializing and undermining: abusive behavior which makes light of your work, your efforts, your interests, or your concerns. The abuser attempts to dilute meaning and value in your life. Undermining might occur when your partner laughs at you, for example, when you burn yourself cooking. It is also jokes at your expense. Undermining is occurring when you feel a “so-called joke” is mean rather than funny.
8. Name calling: no one has a right to call you degrading names. Name calling is verbal abuse.
9. Ordering: Telling you to do something, rather than asking, or making decisions for you or for the two of you without your input.
10. Forgetting and denial: the trickiest form of denial is forgetting. Become aware that forgetting is a form of denial that shifts all responsibility from the abuser to some “weakness of mind.”
11. Abusive anger: this seems to be closely linked to the need to “blow up,” to dominate, to control, to go one up, and to put down. Any time you are snapped at or yelled at, you are being abused.

If you counter the abuser or attempt to explain yourself, you will probably be met with such statements as, “I don’t want to hear it, get out of my face” or “Woman you don’t have the brains“, “B” You shouldn’t have said that to me“.

If you are in a brand-new relationship and see warning signs of verbal abuse, the author suggests you might be wise to let the relationship go. It is not likely that a man (woman) who needs to dominate and control will change easily, if at all. It is also likely that when the newness of the relationship wears off, he will become more abusive. Verbal abuse can become physical in time and physical abuse is always preceded by verbal abuse, according to Evans.If you are in a long-term relationship, you can respond to the abuser as the book suggests and soon discover for yourself whether or not your mate is willing to change and stop his abusive behavior.

“If you have been verbally abused in your relationship, you may have discovered that explaining and trying to understand have not improved your relationship. Therefore, I recommend that you respond in a new way–a way that will make an emotional, psychological, and intellectual impact upon your mate.”

The abuser in your relationship may change when he finds that you do know when you are being abused, that you have set limits, that you mean what you say, and that you will not take behavior you don’t like. 

If the man ( or sadly too often now a women) in your relationship remains abusive, it is not only not your fault," it is  your responsibility to deal with it, make it public, call the police too.

Any person cannot still fight with you of you leave his or her presences, even forever.. and there is still a good life after a failed marriage now too. I practise what I preach and often now too.

The first spouse, love seems  is always the best one in our false pride.. and I know what that is like too.. WE SEEM ALL TO REPEAT OUR BAD TASTE, VALUES.. When they let a person out a prison they generally have a rule not to let them return to his old environment, past home, for five years.. otherwise they will be under the same old bad habits, dispositions too..

NOTE I lost once everything I had owned.. still next I replaced it all with the same things, even though I never used most of them, old habits and bad tastes DO die hard still too for almost all of us.. 

Now still reporting publically the abusers, and calling the POLICE TOO most often solves the abuse problem the best.. for if the evil persons do not feel real negative personal consequences, REAL negative public exposures, they really have no reasons to change their bad habits next and likely then never will.

I rightfully too tend to openly expose all abusers, all bad people, all bad churches, all bad politicians, all bad corporations that I come across, and  often and I  also do do call the police, regulating authorities  often and demand they all be fired,   be put in jail too.

In part two of this three part series of posts Christiaan critically reviews some of the investigations that the paranormal investigation groups have undertaken.

From a rational perspective, the starting point for any inquiry is the setting of an open ended aim that is neutral and it does not suggest a particular conclusion or finding. As shown in the previous post, it is apparent that many members of each of these investigative groups have some form of paranormal belief. Do they have the objectivity to be able to put these beliefs to one side while conducting their investigations?

'Spooks Paranormal Investigations', Strange Occurrences', 'NZ Paranoromal' and 'Ghost Hunters' conduct participant-observer investigations where they travel to the site of alleged haunting and then spend one or more nights there with their instruments.

Ghost Hunters:

All the groups except Ghost Hunters state on their websites that their investigations are confidential and they have not published their findings, Ghost Hunters are kind enough to put write ups of their inquiries on their website. They are somewhat brief and provide limited information on their practices, but they do provide an insight into the way that they form their conclusions based on the evidence they have collected.

Like the other groups, Ghost Hunters like to employ high tech equipment in their investigations and in January 2007 they conducted an investigation at Fairfield House in Nelson. During the night they picked up on their night vision camera what they described as inexplicable black objects, and a knocking sound picked up on audio recording. However, they are somewhat reserved in this write up and do not conclude that this phenomena is sufficient evidence of the paranormal.

They were not quite so reserved in their conclusion after their investigation at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson where they said that there was probable paranormal activity on the basis of an orb photo and a temperature anomaly around one of the graves. Orbs are well established artefact's of photography and there is no scientifically supported evidence or theories of orbs being spirits. Furthermore, while temperature changes have been traditionally associated with ghosts there has been no demonstrated empirical data to show a causal link between temperature and spirits. The conclusion of ‘probable paranormal activity’ is somewhat of an overstatement based upon this limited evidence.

Spooks Paranormal Investigations:

As previously mentioned, Spooks state their investigations are confidential, but they are eager for media exposure and as a result their investigations have featured on New Zealand shows such as 20/20, Campbell Live, and Pacific Beat Street. One must be careful about the fairness of an evaluation given the editing process during the production of such segments , but as you will see it is a worthwhile process analysing these investigations.

The feature on Pacific Beat Street is an investigation conducted by Spooks of an undisclosed location. The group, led by Adam Lancaster, looks impressive with their matching clothes and tools of the trade, which include EMF meters, infrared cameras, and temperature gauges.

Once the group set up their cameras a noise quickly attracts the attention of Spooks and six of them (including the reporter and cameraman) rush to the basement of the building with their temperature gauges and EMF meters. There is some quick editing that bring together some technical sounding and excitedly stated quotes such as “reading 6.9 [degrees]” - “that’s a huge drop” and then the reporter slips into the role of the investigator and based on a temperature reading from an infrared temperature gauge he gravely determines that something is happening in the corner.

The following segment provides an interesting insight into the ‘scientific’ manner that the group use. An excited investigators says ‘Woah did you feel that’ presumably she has felt something (like a breeze?) go past her. At that time a camera battery goes dead and one of the Spooks immediately concludes that these events mean that “there is something here”.

For the first time in the piece some investigative journalism creeps in and the presenter suggests that the battery may have just died and the response he received was a mish mash of woo:

“Its always getting energy, that’s why sometimes you feel cold because its draining your body energy, and whenever you know, you feel a presence that is the feeling you get it is very cold.”

So that clarifies things…because we know that spirits exist, we know that they suck up our ‘energy’ (and as a classic sign of pseudoscience they have a misunderstanding of energy, but that is the subject of another post), and that sucking up of energy is what makes you feel cold.

We are then subjected to an investigator waving around an EMF meter that resembles an out of control Gieger counter with its loud bleeps and flashing red light saying that there is definitely something walking around them. He obviously did not read the section in the EMF meter instruction booklet that says that unless he keeps still while taking the reading he will get a false readout.

After all that excitement they return to the base where the Spooks team is briefed about something strange that had been picked up on a monitor while they had been running around scaring each other. An infrared camera had picked up a shimmer on the monitor to which one member of the group comments that it is going down the stairs and around the corner.

On the face of it, it does appear to be ghostly, but an indication of what it may have been is seen when the shimmer disappears. An insect, possibly a moth, can be seen flying across the monitor. It would appear that the shimmer was caused by the insect flying very close to the lens of the camera. Some butterflies and beetles can see in near infrared and could be attracted to the light, or it could be an insect that has been disturbed by the torch lights in the building. Another possibility is that it could have been one of the Spooks unwittingly waving a torch around near the camera. As previously pointed out they were split up into pairs, in all of the excitement of running around did they know where the other members of the group were?

Discussion:

When looking at the practises of these groups there are some important considerations. Firstly the impact of the investigators on the setting needs to be considered. These examples demonstrate that while these investigators attempt to remain objective, there is a sense of confirmation bias that taints their work. Adam Lancaster of Spooks has said that he has been scared on every investigation he has been on, this frame of mind combined with being put into a position where they may be subject to events they cannot immediately explain it may have an effect on their objectivity that is required for such an investigation.

There is no mention anywhere of any attempts to take baseline measurements. For example, if the ghostly phenomenon occurred at night, then one would hope that temperature and EMF readings would be taken during the day for comparative purposes to establish the existence of any hot or cold spots.

There is no evidence of any systematic recording or note keeping either between investigations or between the members of the groups. Obviously if the manner in which an investigation is recorded has no set format or is constantly subject to change it will make it difficult to compare evidence obtained from different investigations.

The impact of the investigators beliefs and values is an important consideration. Haunted houses are very much infused into our cultural beliefs. We are raised on scary stories about ghosts, they feature prominently in works of fiction on the television, the movies, and books. Like many other mythical creatures a group of common characteristics have developed that is based upon anecdotal experiences combined with the cultural memes.

It is these characteristics that inform the paranormal investigations conducted by these types of groups. In recent years there has been a massive self reinforcing of the mythical characteristics of ghosts through the increasing popularity of paranormal investigation, which can largely be attributed to the US show ‘Ghost Hunters’ which has seen a surge in popularity of groups devoted to paranormal investigation. To summarise these characteristics they include:

• Ghosts are comprised of energy.
• They influence electromagnetic fields.
• Ghosts affect the temperature of a room.
• Ghosts attempt to communicate by talking.

There is not a shred of scientific support for these beliefs, yet somehow paranormal investigators have identified instruments that they believe will assist them to identify these characteristics. These instruments will be examined in the final post in this series.

I had always thought of the word differently: para as in parallel or a world or concept parallel to our laws of binding our physical universe.  I thought of paranormal as the research enveloping all things non-physical.  I'd still like to think of it as a science with the same approach to all things scientific - using hypothesis, conducting experiments, gathering evidence, conjecturing, debunking, etc.  

Poltergeist phenomena is my favorite.  Found in nearly all cultures and religious groups, the activity of the "noisy ghost" is widely reported and documented.  So are hallucinations.  And yet, a single poltergeist event can be witnessed/encountered by multiple people, so I put more validity into claims of this activity.  As a child, I experienced something that would be defined as poltergeist activity.  I don't feel silly admitting this because I believe strongly there is a valid explanation for these experiences.  

In my opinion, we don't have to believe in the supernatural, to better understand the paranormal.   In talking with people, I've found most have some story to share - even the skeptics - of something they just can't explain.  And yet, they all share a desire to find some explanation.

Modern day ghost-hunters invest a good deal of time and money into capturing evidence of paranormal activity.  Whether actual ghosts or residual energy, these pseudo scientists employee EMF meters to measure electric-magnetic fields, recording devices to record "EVPs" or electronic-voice phenomena, infrared and thermal cameras to measure and capture movements or sudden changes in temperature in a room and other tools to assist the investigators with seeing in the dark.  

When I first met a "ghost-hunter," I had a lot of questions and I wasn't very polite about asking.  Questions like, "Isn't hanging around grave-yards cliche?" or "Don't you think walking around houses in the dark is a good way to scare up experiences that might not occur in broad daylight?"  

These questions were quickly answered.  Graveyards tend to make people uncomfortable at night so investigators take new people there to see how they handle fear.  Okay, makes sense, but why the dark?  I was told this was the quiet time and it was more likely you would capture genuine activity than during the day.  There are just too many noises during the day and investigators prefer to turn off any unnecessary electronics to avoid EMF interference. Hence, dark places at night.

I'm actually more impressed than anything getting to know people who study ghosts on the side.  They're not crazy as I expected.  They're not charging people money to do bogus investigations.  I was told if someone charges for their work, beware.  Most investigators will do anything to discredit their own findings because they know these findings will be equally scrutinized by any skeptic.  Still, the fact remains, if you haven't experienced the paranormal, can you ever really believe it?

Then again, I've never seen a neutrino, but I am no less a believer.  

As I was propping up the painting on the chair, I noticed that it had an unusual smell to it. It is almost a fruity smell like strawberries. I was surprised when I turned around the painting and saw, handwritten in pencil, a reference to the history of the house in the painting.

It says: Octagon House. East Hampton, Connecticut. Begin in 1798 by Jeremiah Sexton and completed in 1837 by his son Walter Sexton.

I briefly did some Googling on the house, and found only one entry online confirming basically nothing other than it exists. I could not find any reference to the Sextons or any other information on the home. In my searching however, I did find many references to other Octagon houses throughout the United States, many which have reports of hauntings. I am aware that the octagon is also steeped in occult symbolism, but I am not sure of the particulars of what it represents. I cannot speak for the house itself, but this painting is certainly harboring powerful energies.

The painting has a certain "alive" quality, making it very uncomfortable to look at for any length of time. Twice this week when the lights were dim in the living room, I have seen a large cloud-like black shadow pass across the painting and completely envelope it for a second before disappearing. It blacks out the entire painting for a moment and then disappears. I have also seen, from the corner of my eye, figures moving back and forth in the windows. I am now keeping my camera next to the sofa, because in the event that this visual phenomenon occurs again, I want to try to capture it on film.

I keep the painting propped up on a chair facing in the correct direction. On the third night, when I woke up and walked into the living room, the painting was on it's side facing vertically. There is no rational explanation as to how this could have happened. Someone would have had to come in the house, pick the painting up, turn it on it's side and then place it back in the chair.

IMPORTANT: I have chosen to include a photo of the haunted painting at the end of this post rather than the beginning, in order to issue the following warning. If you are particularly sensitive to metaphysical phenomenon or spirit energies, please USE CAUTION WHEN VIEWING THE PHOTO OF THE PAINTING. Many people have had very uncomfortable reactions to this painting both in person and in viewing photos of the panting via e-mail. At least 4 people have reported severe migraines, and many people have complained of a general sick feeling after viewing the painting. It also tends to evoke a paranoid feeling in the viewer. That said, please try to be in a peaceful and positive state of mind before scrolling down to see the painting...and if you tend to be particularly sensitive, you might want to avoid it all together. I'm sure your curiosity has been peaked either way because of this warning, but please view with caution and definitely not for a prolonged period of time. If you do experience similar reactions, please feel free to comment. I am looking forward to other opinions and reactions regarding the paranormal qualities of this painting, which is a big part of why I am chronicling it here. In all of my posts, I will be sure to include photos of the painting at the very end of the post for these reasons.

I suppose I should start with the story of how I came to acquire this painting, and the history that was given to me from the shopkeeper. I had seen this painting hanging in a local antique shop that I often enjoy browsing around in. The painting had been there for the past two years, in an odd location, far away from most of the other items in the shop. I had always thought the painting was unusual, and it seemed to have a very strong presence about it. Other items in the antique shop came and went very quickly, but this painting always stayed, probably because it is very eerie looking and I cannot imagine anyone would consider it charming enough for display in their living room! It also was rather expensive for such a creepy thing, and at $700 no one seemed in a hurry to claim it as their own. On the other hand, it is a beautifully rendered painting with no damage and the antique frame is very beautiful and in pristine condition, so the price was actually fair. I was surprised one weekend to see it missing from its usual spot in the back room. I was even more surprised to see it reappear in it's original spot approximately one month later.

I inquired with the shopkeeper and told him how I thought the painting had sold and I was surprised to see it there in the back room again. He told me that it had indeed sold, but that the purchaser had returned two weeks later demanding a refund and insisted that the shop  take the painting back. "If I were you, I'd burn the thing", the man told the shop owner, and proceeded to tell him that the painting was haunted. He had brought the painting back in a large box within a box sealed all around in layers and layers of packing tape. "It took me nearly an hour to open the thing", the shopkeeper told me. He said that the man looked frantic and pale as a ghost, and refused to go into details about what had happened as if he were too afraid to talk about it. The shopkeeper didn't seem to believe very much in the paranormal, but he informed me at that time that the reason why the painting had always been in the back room was because his wife was terrified of it. He stated also that when it was out in the front room of the shop where his dog often is, the dog would have periods where he would bark and bark at the painting non-stop and he couldn't "take the ruckus anymore." I had always thought the painting was peculiar, but as a lifelong student of the paranormal, and a collector of bizarre objects....my interest was immediately peaked and I knew I wanted to take the painting home and see for myself if there was high activity on it.

I was offered the painting for $200 less of the original price he was asking, so I put out the $500 and took the painting home. I figured even if it wasn't haunted, it was a very interesting and well done painting nonetheless. I have only had this painting for one week now, and have experienced more paranormal activity with this item than any other object I have ever had in my collection. I want to experiment with taking photos of it to see if any activity can be caught on film (orbs, mists, etc.), and I would also like to get access to an EMF meter to see what the read is on it. I have some experiences to share from just this week alone, but will get to that in future posts.

When there’s something strange in your neighbourhood who are you going to call? Well aside from the police or your mum, there have been a number of new groups who have formed in New Zealand in recent years that are committed to the investigation of unusual activities that may occur in and around your home or business. One group, Spooks Paranormal Investigations, conveniently lists on their websites some of the signs of a haunted house such as cupboards and doors opening and closing, weird noises, unusual animal behaviour, and temperature variations just to name a few.

Perusing the websites of four such New Zealand ghost hunting groups (Nelson’s 'Ghost Hunters', Christchurch’s 'Spooks Paranormal Investigations', Wellington’s 'Strange Occurrences' and 'NZ Paranoromal') there are common themes. Principally they claim to use a rational approach to their investigations and they try to gather as much evidence as they can through the use of various scientific instruments. Sounds like a recipe for the solid use of the scientific method? Let’s take a closer look!

I should point out now that it is not my intention to discuss whether or not spirits or ghosts actually exist, that is a lengthy discussion unto itself. As you will see these investigative groups work under an assumption that spirits exist. Yet before using the techniques these groups employ to investigate ghostly phenomena you actually need evidence that these ghosts exist to start with. Like any extraordinary claim, ghosts (or spirits or apparitions or whatever you want to call them) they will require extraordinary evidence to prove that they exist. I must admit that currently I remain skeptical of the paranormal.

So before examining the groups investigations lets take a look at what the different groups say about their beliefs in the paranormal.

Ghost Hunters says that most hauntings are hoaxes, which implies that they believe that a small number are not, and they are seeking proof of the paranormal through the use of their instruments. It follows then that if you are going to be using instruments to detect ghosts, then you will need to be able to demonstrate the qualities of a spirit and how an instrument is going to detect or interact with them. The use of instruments by these groups will be something that I will look at in more detail in part three of this series of posts.

Both Spooks and Strange Occurrences are a coy in implying whether they believe in the paranormal on their home page, but elsewhere Spooks claims to have encountered most of the signs of a haunting that they provide on their site. One of the members, Mandy, claims to have minor psychic abilities and uses dowsing as an instrument to assist with their scientific investigations of the paranormal. Dowsing has been shown to be unreliable due to the ideomotor effect and the tendency for people who dowse to employ post hoc reasoning. During a 20/20 feature on Spooks, when asked if he believed in ghosts the lead investigator Adam Lancaster said that scientifically he believed in ghosts and then sheepishly retracted the comment and said that he did not. Like Ghost Hunters, Strange Occurrences say that they can detect the paranormal through the use of special equipment, and this appears to be a tacit admission that they too believe in some form of the paranormal.

NZ Paranormal say that they are more than capable of debunking claims of the paranormal, and they have claimed to have occasionally determined that a place is actually haunted.

So to summarise the four groups, they all believe that most cases can be explained through non-paranormal means, but they appear to all have some type of belief in the paranormal. They also all claim to be able to use a rational approach to their investigations that will identify the real hauntings from other non-paranormal occurrences.

Do these groups have the objectivity to put their beliefs to one side when embarking on investigations. Stay tuned for the next post where I examine some of the groups investigations.

First, meet Great-Grandpa Bruno, the "Ghost" ... who also is the spitting imagine of Kramer from Seinfeld! Am I right?

And, here is a wedding picture of Bruno and his bride, my Great-Gramma Rose, who I lived with off and on until she died when I was 19.

And the story begins:

My sassy 100% Italian gramma was laying on her couch one afternoon in the late 70's, early 80's when, all of a sudden, while doing her rosary, the chair started rocking next to her. in fact, it was this chair, my grampa's chair.

By the way, just to make it creepier, he died while holding me, his little blond angel, as I was know back in the day.

Now, my gramma didn't scare easy. She was so sassy she spit in the face of my mom's peeping tom one summer afternoon while we were on a walk in East Detroit. Then she waived her fist and called him a "F-ing bastard" right on the street. She was tough like that.

So, she looked over at the chair, and all of a sudden Bruno appeared in a sort of hologram-type shape. And he told her "Rose, don't go to California, don't go" and then he faded out. She finished her rosary, took off her housecoat, and walked to her travel agents office and promptly canceled her yearly trip to California to see her daughter.

A few months later she and I were watching the news when we saw a huge mudslide that had killed a train full of people. Of course, gramma turned pale, ran and got out some paperwork, and discovered that THIS WAS the same trip she was supposed to be on!

I totally believe in ghosts, by the way, as I think anything is possible. I have heard so many ghost stories in my life ... and I also grew up in not one but two houses where someone had died.

I really believe my grandpa Bruno saved my gramma so that she could be in my life to protect me and provide a safe place for me when my mom went crazy, as she did from time to time.
