I no longer do any work for the NASA so if you have any questions about space flight I can no longer answer them. Instead I've taken a job with a utility company. Where it appears I will doing a lot of PL/SQL. I was under the impression it would be C# which excited me but it appears I was mistaken. Either way writing code of any kind was a step up from what I was doing. Either Paludis 0.28.1 is out. I think I'm still running 0.26.x so I definitly need to upgrade myself. It would appear on the Linux not to much is going on. A couple of linux boxes are getting sold through Dell, a couple oh phones run Linux, and for the most part 90% of the world still doesn't care.

In more interesting news though, has anyone who reads this ever flashed thier router with an open source alternitive like DD-WRT or Tomato. I just bought a Lynksys router which is compatible with DD-WRT and I was curious how other people faired with it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Lynksys firmware but I like to run open source if I can. I mean why not?

Últimamente estoy encontrándome más reparaciones de lo habitual de origen eléctrico, es decir, debidas (presuntamente) a picos o subidas de tensión.
Debemos tener en cuenta que en ésta época la temperatura es bastante superior a lo habitual y que debido a eso, hacemos más uso de los aparatos refrigerantes que tenemos en casa (aire acondicionado, ventilador...) con su consiguiente consumo eléctrico.
Si a ésto le sumamos el polvo que va acumulando el equipo dentro, tenemos una bomba de relojería en potencia dispuesta a estallar en cualquier momento, poniendo en peligro nuestros datos y por ende nuestro bolsillo.

Por ese motivo me gustaría daros unos pequeños consejos que podrían resultaros bastante útiles :
1) Hacer una limpieza regularmente del polvo, sobre todo el que haya acumulado en los ventiladores.
Para ésto simplemente tenemos que quitar dos tornillos, abrir la tapa lateral y ayudándonos de un pincel, una brocha o una aspiradora, eliminar todo el polvo que veamos.

2) Instalar algún programa que controle la temperatura, con el que podeis ver en todo momento los grados a los que trabaja la CPU.
Hay varios, pero dos de los más conocidos son Speedfan y Motherboard monitor.

3) Colocar un SAI que proteja de los apagones inesperados o las subidas de tensión.
Los hay de distintos precios y voltajes, para un uso doméstico con uno sencillo basta. Hay infinidad de marcas y desde unos 60€ ya podemos encontrar algo decente.

4) Tener conectado el ordenador y sus periféricos a una regleta con botón, de ésta manera al apagar el ordenador y apagar el botón, la corriente no llegará hasta el ordenador.
Las hay de varias tomas, dependiendo lo que vayamos a conectar, y su precio es bastante económico.

NOTA : No olvideis hacer copias de seguridad regularmente de aquellos datos que no querais perder.

Wow, thanks, that's very illustrative - can't you tell me *which* file?  Turned out the culprit was mozMapi32.dll, a file located in Thunderbird's program files directory.  Something (other than Thunderbird) was locking the file.

A little investigation showed that the root cause of the problem was likely my logitech web cam, killing off the web cam software enabled me to delete the file and do a clean install of Thunderbird 2.0.0.16.

What?  Why in heaven is my web cam software locking files in another program's directory?   Now, I'm not entirely positive that the root cause is the web cam software, I didn't test out this theory rigorously.  But a google search shows that logitech software has been suspected as the root cause of update problems for quite some time now.

So, if you have a logitech web cam (or possibly any logitech device; I'll try to replicate this problem with the web cam uninstalled and the wireless mouse plugged in), expect update problems.  Turn off your web cam software (annoyingly, the easily accessible logitech software does not provide "do not launch at boot" as
an option.

Nice going, dev squad at Logitech.  If in fact you're the root cause of this problem, you've managed to replicate bad behavior that I haven't seen since late Windows 98... and you've left it broken for quite some time now without fixing it.

I'll try to take the time to verify this post-haste.  If this is the case, I'd have to consider not recommending Logitech devices in general...
