Female Danish director Susanne Bier’s most recent movie Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) stars Halle Berry as Audrey Burke, David Duchovny as Brian Burke and Benicio Del Toro as Jerry Sunborne.

This is actually a tight little family drama reminiscent of Bier’s earlier movie Brothers (2004). Brian is portrayed as a good family man, loves his wife and kids, genuinely cares for people, including his childhood friend Jerry who has fallen on hard times. Brian gets involved in a dispute one night as he goes to get his family some ice-cream. He intervenes when he sees a man beating his wife/girlfriend in the street. There is one of those moments where you just know things will go bad and you’re just holding your breath waiting for it. And then the shot rings out.

The young grieving widow Audrey basically shuts down. She does not act out her grief in the typical operatic Hollywood screaming-and-crying catharsis, she simply shuts down and gets on with it. At the funeral she sees Jerry for the first time in a long time and you get the sense that she adopts her ex-husbands need to care for Jerry and help him sort himself you. It is never expressed like that, but you could probably argue that the two of them need each other and the state they’re both in they have to find someone pretty pathetic to take care of in order to feel stronger.

This develops into an arrangement where Jerry is living in the garage and trying to put his own life back together while at the same time dealing with the emotionally distraught Audrey. Her refusal to deal with what has happened leads her to be at times very hurtful to Jerry saying things like “it should have been you” meaning Jerry’s life as a heroin addict isn’t worth as much as her husbands.

Bier excels at this kind of emotional subtlety, underscoring the characters with different kinds of music creating a kind of musical backdrop to their emotional states. There is also family dynamic which feels authentic. This is not a stagey, theatrical family drama but a very subtle observational dissection of the dynamic of sudden and tragic loss of a much loved person. Del Toro and Berry deliver the kinds of performances that make you sit and watch in fascination. Bier’s use of close-ups and slow tracking could have felt affected if the dialogue hadn’t been so well-written and delivered with authenticity. Even Jerry’s relapse to heroin use is treated with the same respectful distance. It is at times painful to watch how completely Jerry loses his dignity and sense of self in the throws of withdrawal just as it is painful to watch when the closed-off Audrey finally breaks down and howls her grief in her husbands study – a room she has not been able to enter since the shooting.

Even the kids, Harper (Alexis Llewellyn) and Dory (Micah Berry) shine in their portrayal of two children trapped in a situation where they have just lost their father, their mother isn’t as emotionally supportive as she could be since she can’t really talk to them about what has happened.

As a tragedy this plays out with a sense of authenticity which makes you feel for the characters, but still leaves you in the end with a sense that life will go on. You have to live through these things, survive them any way you can, put yourself back together and keep going on. In a scene where family and friends are seated around a big dinner table Audrey can finally start talking about her husband again in a way that suggests she will learn to remember the good things and live with her loss. And Jerry finally goes to get the help he needs to get his life together once and for all. But there are no happily ever afters, just the sense that life goes on.

This is not a movie you should watch if you are not in the mood for something that takes its time in sorting things out and does it in a stylistic way that might feel a little invasive at times. But it is definitely good stuff and I strongly recommend it.

In this POST,BCK introduced Halle Berry's baby Nahla. The picture of Halle's daughter incited some very interesting conversations among readers. Here are a few comments from dedicated readers:

She’s such a pretty little baby. Halle’s black gene must be really strong. The baby is only a quarter black but looks more like half black.~Jade

What is wrong with everyone and this “COLOR/RACE” business. My grandfather is light-skinned with greyish blue eyes and my grandmother is dark-skinned with brown eyes and straight hair. They have 12 children together but only one came out light…even though my grandmother’s mother was white. Of their many grandchildren only one came out with very light colored eyes. My grandmother has three brothers and two sisters and they all literally look like day and night. Some are high color and some are dark. We as African-Americans need to stop assuming just because you have two people of different or mixed races that their kids are “EXPECTED” to look a certain way. You all need to shut the hell up and have an opinion about something else OTHER THAN RACE AND COLOR. It’s getting tired and repetitive. We are all adults here NOT CHILDREN SO GET OFF THE DAMN PLAYGROUND AND GROW THE HELL UP. Halle Berrys daughter is BEAUTIFUL!!!!~Island girl

Wow, why must race issues always play such an important part in post such as this one and others that feature interracial families. Nahla looks so much like her father and her eyes are beautiful. Nahla’s eyes do not appear to me to be blue but a grayish color and who knows they may turn out to be a light hazel color.~Steffie

YOU KNOW WHAT? WITH ALL THIS TALK ABOUT SKIN COLOR AND EYE COLOR AND SPECULATION ON WHO SHE WILL LOOK LIKE IT IS NO WONDER WHY HALLE KEPT HER OUT OF THE PUBLIC EYE SO LONG. WE ARE MESSED UP….ESPECIALLY US BLACK FOLK. SHE IS A DOLL WHETHER SHE HAS LIGHT SKIN OR BLUE EYES OR NOT. PEOPLE PLEASE HAVE SOME PRIDE.~Melissa Tarver

I think Nahla looks just like her father. She is 3/4 white after all. Either way she’s a beautiful little girl. And congratulations to Halle for not selling pictures to some magazine, that was very classy of her.~J

Ah yes as race rears it’s ugly head. A beautiful mixed race woman has a beautiful mixed race child. Are some of you happy that whatever the skin colour/eye colour this beautiful angel has graced us with her presence? No instead you all spend time deliberating on how white or black she looks. If Halle found a black man you would complain about the child being dark, she found a white man - you still complain. Some say sell the pics, some say don’t sell. Bottom line is this. What if it were your child? Would you welcome all the negative comments? If I were Halle Berry and this were my kid I would tell you all to Go to HELLLLL!!!!~Claire

Some Researched Facts/Opinions:

Throughout history, Skin color deter-mined how African Americans were treated and what jobs they were given. Slaves who were considered lighter-skinned were given jobs and chores that were more respectable inside the house, such as cooking, cleaning, and attending to the children. On the other hand, the darker-complexioned slaves were given more menial jobs, such as working the fields, picking cotton, and laboring manually. After the abolition of slavery, the impact of skin color influenced the lives of African Americans in reference to status and achievement.

At present in our society, the implication of skin color is evi-dent in the varied messages received by many Black Americans. Many African Americans are taught at an early age to be proud of their heritage and skin color, but many still remain “color struck” or color conscious. This means that they attend and respond differently to shades of dark skin.

Some believe that this thinking has created a "color complex," where black women measure their beauty by the shade of their skin and lose focus on other ways to express beauty.
When women see images of beauty, they typically don't think of chocolate skin, dark eyes and thick hair."

"Some women are insecure and buy into the idea that beauty depends on how long one's hair is, how light one's eyes are and how light one's skin color is - all which are ideologies that stem from the slave movement."

BCK Says:Is focusing on skin color/eye color another way for people in the African-American community to enslave themselves?

I found my daughter watching Hilary Duff’s A Cinderella Story when I arrived home yesterday from a women’s conference. Sam(Hilary) has been an orphan after her father died and she left to stay with her stepmother and 2 stepsisters who have treated her bad. Of course, many of know the story of a classic fairy tale, Cinderella who had been spent her life serving her stepmom and sisters right at her own house. Then one day, she was given a chance to attend a ball in the palace and there she met the prince and the rest is history.

Cinderella’s story is one of which we call a Nouveau Riche, a French term which means new money. It generally means to emphasize a certain individual who was previously part of a lower socioeconomic rank, and that such wealth has provided the means for the acquisition of goods or luxuries that were previously unobtainable. From being a servant girl, Cinderella found her way to be a princess. In Cinderella Story, Sam found out that all his father’s wealth is actually hers.

Around the world, there are many popular personalities whose lives can ba tagged as nouveau riche. Some of these personalities are Mariah Carey, Halle Berry, Jim Carey, Bill Clinton, Cher, Celine Dion, Eva Peron and Oprah Winfrey.

I personally know someone whose life can be called, nouveau riche. He used to be a cab driver. One day, his service by an Arabian business man. The Arabian left his attaché with money full inside. The good heart taxi driver returned the money to the business man. In return for his good deed, the Arabian asked him to work in his company in Saudi Arabia. When the old Arabian retired, the man decided to return to the Philippines. He was able to earn enough money, to put up his own Contracting company.

Today, he is one of the richest person in the province of Quezon. He owns a multi-million house and several properties. But in spite of his wealth, and being tagged as a silent millionaire, he remained humble and kind, especially to those who are in need.

How did I know about him, well he’s actually the paternal grandfather of my little Antoinette. :)

Last night, the Stand Up To Cancer Telethon took over all three major networks at NBC, CBS, and ABC. More than 60 celebrities from music, sports, TV, and film showed up to make history. Beyonce, Halle Berry, Charles Barkley, Chris Tucker, Jennifer Aniston, Salma Hayek, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Forest Whitaker, Keanu Reeves, America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), BeBe Winans, Jennifer Garner and a few other stars all supported. That's definitely a beautiful thing for celebrities to unite for.

This year, approximately 565,650 Americans are expected to die of cancer -- that's more than 1,500 people a day.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. In the US, cancer accounts for 1 of every 4 deaths.

The budgets for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have been flat for 5 years. Adjusted for inflation, the NIH budget has fallen 13 percent since 2003, and the NCI budget has fallen 12 percent since 2004.

The NIH estimate overall costs of cancer in 2007 at $219.2 billion:

$89.0 billion for direct medical costs;

$18.2 billion for lost productivity due to illness; and

$112.0 billion for lost productivity due to premature death.

Ovarian Cancer can afflict adolescent, young adult, and mature women, although the risk of disease increases with age and peaks in the late 70s. Pregnancy and the long-term use of oral contraceptives reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Women who have had breast cancer, or who have a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer may have increased risk. Inherited mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes increase risk. Another genetic syndrome, hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer, has also been associated with endometrial and ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer incidence rates are highest in Western industrialized countries.

Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of all cancers among women and ranks #2 among gynecologic cancers.

An estimated 21,650 new ovarian cancer cases are expected in the U.S. in 2008.

An estimated 15,520 ovarian cancer deaths are expected in 2008.

Ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

Ovarian cancer is not a "silent" disease; it is a "subtle" disease. Recent studies indicate that some women may experience persistent, nonspecific symptoms, such as (i) bloating, (ii) pelvic or abdominal pain, (iii) difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, or (iv) urinary urgency or frequency. Women who experience such symptoms daily for more than a few weeks should seek prompt medical evaluation. (To learn more about the warning signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, CLICK HERE).

There is no reliable screening test for the detection of early stage ovarian cancer. Pelvic examination only occasionally detects ovarian cancer, generally when the disease is advanced. However, the combination of a thorough pelvic exam, transvaginal ultrasound, and a blood test for the tumor marker CA125 may be offered to women who are at high risk of ovarian cancer and to women who have persistent, unexplained symptoms like those listed above.

If diagnosed at the localized stage, the 5-year ovarian cancer survival rate is 92%; however, only about 19% of all cases are detected at this stage, usually fortuitously during another medical procedure.

For women with regional and distant metastatic disease, the 5-year ovarian cancer survival rates are 71% and 30%, respectively. The 10-year relative survival rate for all stages combined is 38%.

During 1987-2004, ovarian cancer incidence declined at a rate of 0.9% per year.

Weberknechte.

Weberknechte.

VS.
What’s really funny? On the day that I write a post about Sara Palin, Halle Berry

VS.

What's really funny? On the day that I write a post about Sara Palin, Halle Berry's old Post in which she wins the Most Fabulous 40 somethings gets more views than Sarah Palin --More than twice the amount! That tells us where the minds of Americans are and just how distracted they aren't by Sarah Palin and her announcement. Yesterday, my Sarah Palin quickie overview was only viewed 35 times compared to Halle Berry's 85. To be fair it may have just been a crappy post. LOl! I'm not sure you decide. I guess we'll see how it goes tomorrow. So far today...Halle Berry is winning!!! Maybe I'll pit Sara Palin against against another topic and see who wins tomorrow.

Don't be mad at me I'm just here tellin' it like it T-I-Tiiz!!!

Hey Ya’ll! Hope you had a nice Labor Day weekend. Hubby and I had our hands full with home buy

Hey Ya'll! Hope you had a nice Labor Day weekend. Hubby and I had our hands full with home buying hoopla but it seems like Hollywood used the long weekend as an opportunity to show off their "labors" of love - their babies! Everyone was out and about with their new little ones so I thought I'd recap it for you to brighten up your Tuesday lunch-break.

Halle Berry finally gave the world it's first glimpse of baby Nahla when she visited the Los Angeles Zoo on Saturday. Nahla's father is model Gabriel Aubry.

Matthew McConaughey stepped out with his gorgeous girlfriend, Camila Alves, and 2-month old son Levi. Of course, we had already saw Levi's cute little self on the cover of OK Magazine, but it was nice to see them out and about on Sunday at the Nike + Human Race where Matthew raced along side buddy Lance Armstrong.

And finally, a very natural looking Christina Aguilera took 7 month old son Max to dinner Monday night with dad Jordan Bratman in NYC. Nice to see Christina without the pounds of red lipstick. And look at baby Max with his red hair - who would've thought?
