Dear Diary,

I've come up with a brand new game! For the past two days, I'll pace like I'm going to defecate on their precious carpet, and garner mom's attention. Frantically she'll shove her laptop aside yelling "No no no!", sounding suspiciously like the teacher from Charlie Brown. Sometimes she'll trip over something, which is hilarious.  She'll swoop in and pick me up and carry me outside, over any puddles. (Free chauffeur service! Score!) Here comes the best part.

When we get outside, I'll just bark the grass into submission, ram my head into the grass, and roll around like a wild animal.

It's liberating.

Then I'll poop in the house anyway. I am the King.

I think the next order of business is to get rid of the generic banner graphic. If anyone reading has any artistic skills, and wants to help out, I would be glad to accept submissions. What I am looking for is some thing simple as the current banner is, with a lot of white in it to match the theme. Needs to be 10 by 2.5 (720 by 180 pixels) at 72 dpi.

"Most of the games on the Wii look like crap. We want to change that, so we've invested heavily in our Wii tech over the past year," said CEO Kerry Ganofsky in an interview with IGN.

The upcoming Wii game The Conduit takes place in the present day, where Washington finds itself at the centre of an extraterrestrial attack. Taking on the role of Agent Ford, players must get to the heart of the invasion whilst fighting aliens off in standard shooter fashion.

High Voltage Software's previous work, including 50 Cent: Bulletproof and Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, isn't known for ground-breaking graphics. Nevertheless, Ganofsky hopes that The Conduit will both change that perception and show more traditional games can be successful on Wii.

"There is this pervasive and cyclical argument that Wii consumers don't want mature titles, when there aren't those types of products available to them," said Ganofsky. "And even more frustrating is the claim that Wii consumers only care about great gameplay.

"Of course they care about gameplay, but we believe if given the choice, they would want great graphics as well. It's just a cop out. With Conduit, we are trying to make a Wii game that looks like a 360 title."

So, which is more important to you?:

Smooth, fluid animation sacrificing high detailed textures and anti-aliasing? Or do you prefer a hyper realistic look, even if the jump animation just looks a little (or way) off?

Or do you just sacrifice both for a bit of fun (see: Marvel Ultimate Alliance)?

Itagaki likes everything, but specifically mentions "movement and animation" here. Of course, anyone who has played Dead or Alive knows that :)

I think it’s a hardware restriction thing. When developers can’t push the system hardware to produce near photorealistic visuals, they have to find another way to make their game visually appealing. I’m playing through Okami, which was of course, a PS2 game before its release for the Wii. After watching it for a few minutes, my roommate’s girlfriend remarked, “I guess I don’t like watching this game because it isn’t pretty.” “What the hell are you talking about?” everybody in the room replied. “This game is gorgeous.” She shrugged. “I guess, but it’s just not realistic.” Anybody who’s seen this early tech demo of Okami knows that it was a good thing the limitations of the PS2 hardware required a less realistic look. The hand-drawn look suits it.

No More Heroes uses a similar cel-shading technique to look like an adult cartoon, and I’m interested in what I’ve seen from Madworld, which looks like it uses cel-shading to flagrantly rip off Sin City. I watched the trailer, which basically pointed out “Look! You can kill people with different things!” I need more to a game than just graphic violence. That said, even if the game turns out to totally suck, I’ll probably rent it anyway to check out the unique visual style.

Obstructions can be a good thing. The Oulipo writers in France used them, Lars von Trier and Jørgen Leth used them in The Five Obstructions, and now Wii developers use them to create visually fascinating games. Sure photorealism is impressive, but there’s more than one way to make a graphically impressive game.
