Following online video means watching a lot of sketch comedy. After all, sketch comedy is to Youtube

Following online video means watching a lot of sketch comedy. After all, sketch comedy is to Youtube as superheroes are to comic books: a fundamental fact of the medium, the basis upon which entire companies are launched. There's a lot of comedy online, and very often it's not very good. But every once in a while, you come across a group that really gets it.

In Los Angeles, practically every sketch comedy group born out of the Groundlings or Upright Citizen's Brigade or Second City schools is putting up its own shorts, and on the surface the Vacationeers are no exception. Their bio page is pretty typical, referencing Chicago improv training and small roles in feature films (though there are some impressive -- which is to say, paid -- writing and acting credits mentioned). And their shorts follow the traditional patterns of the broke and funny: a bunch of young white guys hanging out in somebody's apartment, with one attractive girl added occasionally for flavor.

But with their five-part series The Googling, the Vacationeers have struck viral and comedy gold, using three simple techniques: 1) Each video is short (under three minutes); 2) they're funny, well-produced, and well-written; and 3) they take aim at Google, a company so present in our lives that it seems only a few years away from from becoming a real-life Cyberdyne Systems (sans killer robots, of course).

Tapping into the paranoia we all felt when checking our home addresses on Street View for the first time, Google Maps is a surprisingly creepy bit of dark comedy, anchored by Jeff Grace's underplayed terror. The black humor continues as our heroes in a Los Feliz apartment check out Google Moon, Google My Maps and Google SMS; each Web 2.0 experience ends in grim tragedy. This isn't exactly new territory: Ever since technology started to outsmart us, we've been afraid of it using that power against us -- lots of people call 2001: A Space Odyssey science fiction, but for me the sound of HAL's voice is flat-out horror. But by keeping each short funny and punchy, the Vacationeers manage to play on these familiar tropes, poking fun at the underlying paranoia even as they push each scenario into Stephen King territory.

Sure, it's no drunk baby demanding her rent money. But in an space driven by dick jokes, it's smart comedy. And that makes it special.

The PSP scene is kinda slow these days, sony releasing minor updates, DAX not making any m33 for 3.93 and the 3.95, etc.. maybe DAX's just waiting for 4.00 to release an m33 update. =)

Anyways, PSP-Maps is a tool that allows you to browse Google Maps, Virtual Earth and Yahoo Maps with your PSP and its WiFi connection. You can move around the map, zoom in and out, cycle through the different available views, search for an address, load/save favorites, etc…

It includes a cache system so you can browse later the maps you have previously seen, even if you don’t have WiFi available. There is also a PC version if you don’t have WiFi at all, so you can build a cache on your computer and copy it to your PSP.

Technically, PSP-Maps connects directly to the servers to fetch the images, it does not use the provided APIs since there are usually in JavaScript and not convenient for a homebrew.

PSP-Maps v1.0 changes:

added GP2X version;
added Google Moon, Google Mars and Google Sky support; if you find the “cheat” code, you can enable these;
fixed Google Terrain view;

Get it here.

To me, this little world in a gravitational dance with the Earth, about which so much is still not known, is a mysterious and fascinating place, and perusing its surface via Google Earth is almost addictive.

Google Earth has become a staple of Google Maps, with developments and updates released regularly. Google's project has grown to include Google Mars, Google Sky, and Google Moon, and just as Google Earth has gone from a downloadable application to a web-accessible visual tool, Google Sky - which used to be solely a portion of the Google Earth application - will too. And Google won’t let a little lawsuit get in the way of developing its Google Sky.

They have just launched their web-based version of Google Sky, which doesn’t require a download and can be accessed directly through the user's browser window. It is available on all web browsers, and is being launched globally in 26 localized languages.

There are a few new exploration features that come with the web-based version - a search tool for browsing named objects in the sky, multiple optical sky surveys for switching views, and galleries that display images from Hubble and other telescopes. Two key benefits of this dynamic version is that users won’t have to rely on downloadable updates in order to get the latest information, and it also lets you find current planet positions.

Τι μπορεί να δείξει το Google Sky;

Google has a web site similar to Google Earth where one can examine the moon’s surface and see

Google has a web site similar to Google Earth where one can examine the moon's surface and see various points of interest. It's called Google Moon . It's worth mentioning I believe because there is a lot of historical information contained in the map detail that is very interesting. For example, the Apollo 11 landing site is identified and can be clicked on to see numbered areas which also can be clicked on to bring up a pop up box containing more information.

After clicking on Apollo 11, then clicking on the #1 balloon on the map brings up information about the landing site with links to watch the actual landing video and to read the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal. Balloon #7 or picture #7, depending on where you click, is a panorama of "The Lunar Module and the American Flag." You can click on the "+" sign and enlarge on anything in the picture, for example the flag. Seeing the flag upright and open even though there is no wind to blow it around is fascinating. These are high quality pictures, so by zooming in, you don't lose much in the way of picture quality, and you can really zoom in close. Number #9 is a picture of the lander's leg, and looking over the horizon of the moon all you see is pitch black. Enlarging this photo brings up a separate window which can also be enlarged. All I saw in the sky over the moon was a faint star in the middle of all that black, high up on the horizon. Clicking on balloon #16 brings up "The View from Little West Crater." This is cool because you can use your mouse to pan the picture back and forth to see a very wide view. All these balloons have corresponding small pictures at the bottom of the screen that you can click on if you don't want to chase the balloons on the map.

Picture #6, Apollo 11

In the upper right corner of the map are boxes that can be clicked to see topographical chart maps, which are very interesting as well. There are also boxes for Apollo (brings up Apollo missions 11 through 17), Visible (apparently the visible portion of the moon) and Elevation (for elevation points on the map).

I also found a Google map of Mars but it doesn't seem quite as interesting as the moon map, and of course not as extensive yet. There are boxes that can be clicked for Elevation, Visible and Infrared. The surface detail can be enlarged and craters viewed in close. So it's interesting, but I would start with Google Moon. Perhaps the Rovers can be plotted onto the Mars map at some point in the future.

Picture #5, Apollo 15

I am pretty sure that most of you came across the term- Google Earth- which is a powerful freeware tool that combines the power of Google Search with satellite imagery, maps, terrain and 3D buildings to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips.This time it is not the Earth that is at the center of their focus, but Moon. Together with NASA Ames Research Center, Google managed to put together collection of lunar maps and charts and named it Google Moon. So far it is limited to the story of the Apollo missions, but that is expected soon to expend as well.

Its pretty good deal despite the fact that it is far from the Google Earth has achieved so far, but am sure that this has future as well. However, the only drawback I could see is that you cannot open Google Moon in your already existing Google Earth module, which requires little extra work, but it functions fully online. Other than that, its fun way of how to expand your knowledge about the Moon and enjoyably spend your free afternoon on Internet.

If you get bored quickly, I suggest you checking out the new feature of Google Earth, that is Exploring The Sky. Check out this little video to understand.

ChinaView reports that pictures by Chang'e-1 will not show U.S. astronauts' footprints left on moon. What they don't explain is that this is because the footprints aren't there. After all, everyone knows the Americans never made it to the Moon, except in their dreams and a TV studio.

The Chinese say their lunar orbiter's camera doesn't have the resolution to see footprints only 30cm long, but they're just helping the U.S. "save face", though who can tell which one. Not even the Hubble Telescope can help, it can only see things 60m across or bigger; but NASA would say that, wouldn't they!

We will have to wait for the launch of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) in late 2008 for the next stage in this game. And game it must be, as it can't be rocket science.

While you're waiting, you can play on Google Moon. Choose "Apollo 11", then "8: Gait experiments" for the very same spot where the astronauts didn't walk.

For real rocket science, play Moon Cave. This really shows why the U.S. couldn't have developed the right technology to get to the moon and back, never mind land on and take off from it.

NASA i Google podpisały porozumienie o współpracy w grudniu 2006 r. (PAP)
