Well, I have been trying very hard, dear readers to move from t-shirt designs to making a dress. Cute little paw print pattern in bright summer colors? Check. Glitch pants? Check. Second pair of pants to wear without skirt? Check. Sleeveless, squared neck blouse? Check.... Wait a moment, there is a little line at the seam that does not meet. Not a problem. Did the design once, can do it again. Does it work the second time? No. Third? No. Differnent extentions? No. Arrrg! Ok, deep breath. Chill. Relax. Sabbath is almost here. Rest. Start over on Sunday. Ahhhh.

On the up side. My knowledge of GIMP is increasing. I hid another geocache (and found a few). And I started a dog training class with my dog Scotty (he's an Irish Wolfhound). All in all not too bad.

And now to rest. And to remember Psalm 37:8

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret - it only causes harm.

Que tal aprender a trasformar essa imagem:

Nessa daqui:

Quer aprender como se faz?

Basta seguir o tutorial!

I will provide some basic instructions on how to:

Capture Images

Resize Images

Crop Images

Convert Images

Click on the pictures for a larger view.

I had been tweaking a few things in Firefox and I captured my screen to post the screen shots in my blog. But all the images, that were as large as my screen, were saved in .png format and each file was several MB large. So, I decided to re-size the images to reduce image size and converted the image to .jpg to reduce file size. Given that GIMP was conveniently included in Gutsy, I was happy to learn how to use it for such simple task. After one Google search I found the tutorial website for GIMP, which happened to be very helpful. Remember, my way might now be the quickest way because I pretty much figured this out myself.

Note:

This is not the fastest way to capture image. Your Print Screen button will do a better job unless you want to edit the image in GIMP right after it's taken.

The third option of taking a snapshot of a selected region did not work for me even after I chose the region. Try it and let me know if it works for you.

Resizing Images

Have your image ready.

On the Menu bar, select Image -> Scale Image. Alternatively, you can right click on the image and the Menu options will appear as well.

Note:

Notice the Chain in the dialog box. If the chain is connected, that means the picture will be resize proportionally - when you change either the width or height, the other changes accordingly to maintain the proportion of the image.

Choose Percent for unit if you just want to shrink the image, by half (50%) for instance, or do not know your desire image size in pixel.

You have cropped the image.

Converting Image

Have your file ready.

Choose File -> Save as

Expand Select File Type (by Extension) and choose your desire file type.

Select Save.

Your new file is the converted file.

Note:

In fact, you will be requested to export your file when the file type is change. Exporting image will not change the original image but only create a new image with a different file type.

I like this a lot because I can convert to many different types but I can only convert one file at a time. However, I also needed to edit the image, which resulted in loading GIMP - might as well use it for conversion.

Conclusion

I just discovered that Wordpress.com provides a 3GB online storage and allows me to upload .png images. So...no comment.

Anyway, how is this tutorial? Please let me know in the comment sections. Thank you.

I'm sick, yep me of all people, oh this week keeps getting better. My laptop has been at the company since Tuesday and has just gone into repair, so much for that getting it back faster, hopefully it will get back to GeekSquad by sunday and then all I would have to worry about is getting over whatever this sickness is.

I forgot to mention in my mini biography I rarely get sick, the only time I really catch anything other than a small cold or a headache is when it is pasted to me from someone else. In this case it was passed to me by my dad. I have a huge headache, a running nose, a stuffed nose, my body is hot, eyes are watering, ears feel like they are gonna bust and Im sneezing like crazy. I should be on bed rest but I am a fighter, I am doing what I always do when im sick, keeping the movement up so I can get my body working stronger against it. Yes it doesn't have to make sense it works for me.

Now in the last blog i said I would be working on some new pieces, I have finished them and will be starting some more pieces, I just have to wait to show you guys because I used some stock from deviantart in which I have to ask permission to post on my blog but keep in mind I will show you guys =).

Intill next time, this is Wolf. Now let me get back to drinking my cranberry juice.

If you are new to GIMP, then let me introduce it you.

Slicing is very easy on Photoshop. So how about us, GIMP-users?

Well, we can use the "Slice" filter (Filters > Web > Slice) and the Guillotine to slice our images. Both techniques slice up the images along its horizontal and vertical guides. Thus, there must be guides present in order for these techniques to work.

The difference of the two techniques is that "Slice" filter creates for you a table code to re-create your images. I haven't tried this one yet because this filter is not present on GIMP installers. I wonder why? However, if you like this kind of technique, you could always download the plugin. Check this out to know more about the "Slice" filter.

Another technique to slice images in GIMP is by using the Guillotine (Image > Transform > Guillotine). Guillotine does not create a code to re-create the image like the "Slice" filter. Guillotine, however, slices "everything" up in your images including layers. It, sort of, crops every layer to the shape of the area bounded by the layer guides.

A word of caution before you use Guillotine in slicing. Be sure to remove unnecessary guides to prevent filling your desktop with 50 sub-images in which you don't really need 80% of those slices.

Happy gimping!!

Well, I had one of my thankfully infrequent “sleep talking” incidents again last night.

Well, I had one of my thankfully infrequent "sleep talking" incidents again last night. While I am often prone to making the odd noise or crying out in my sleep, actually talking in my sleep or holding a conversation is less common. But, last night my better half was woken by me talking. When she endeavoured to get me to go to the spare room I replied along the lines of "But we haven't got there yet!" When she tried yet again I retorted, apparently having checked the time on the bedside clock, "But we still have five hours to get there!" Then I went and slept, somewhat furtively, in the spare room.

I moved to the spare room quite gingerly. I am still in recovery from the annual Lads' Walking Weekend which left me with a couple of knackered knees, a stiff right leg, and aches and pains all over my body. Ouch, ouch, ow, ouch. Presumably, my "sleep talking" was linked to the pain I was feeling and involuntary flashbacks to the trial of the weekend - six grumpy old men and their new young gimp (aged 32) walking from Westward Ho! to Bude, via Clovelly and Hartland Quay in bright sunshine, too little breeze, and, temperatures in the mid to high twenties. As far as I could tell, the Devonshire coast was truly beautiful, if the scenery was somewhat blurred through the tears of my pain.

Westward Ho!, apparently the only place in the UK with an exclamation mark in its name, could do with a lick of paint and a bit of care and attention. And, I would certainly sack the town planner. It was the usual pitiful array of run down B&Bs, fish and chip shops, and amusement arcades that is to be found in any English seaside resort. Thankfully, however, we were there just to eat, drink and sleep, arriving after 8pm. For, Westward Ho! is a strange place indeed.

The pub on the Friday night was packed with locals. The locals looked genetically challenged and spent most of the night discussing the size of their runner beans. They clearly didn't get out to the big city too often. Fashion there is by Primark and Matalan in Westward Ho! And, the pub grub was somewhat disappointing.

In the morning, we paid and bode farewell to our God Botherer host in the B&B -for which we received a blessing in return. We split the various chores between the group - shuffling cars to the next destination (including a spot of frankly unnecessary road rage from Volvo Man), and, buying lunch - and had a relaxed coffee under an umbrella from where we took in the view.

Westward Ho! was teaming with young surfer dudes sporting tans, six packs (lucky bastards) and very tacky tattoos; plump young girls sporting ice-creams (presumably as their puddings, having consumed a pasty or two before venturing out of doors); old women in wheelchairs being pushed about by their carers from the local home; and pasty looking families heading for the beach.

Much to our amusement, someone had left a pair of false teeth on the chair next to our table. This was retrieved by the waiter with a grimace and a pair of rubber gloves. Even funnier was the fact that the teeth's owner returned to retrieve them. He was a fat, bald, red-faced man with man-boobs that Jordan would have been proud of.

Oh, and then we walked, limped and hobbled our way the twelve miles or so to Clovelly.

Clovelly is a lovely spot with friendly cats and a tame fox. Apparently the village has been privately owned by the same family since 1066. Gleaming white cottages clinging to a steep cliff face with narrow cobbled streets leading down to a busy little quay. There are no cars in the village (they wouldn't fit) so everything gets transported by donkey and wooden sledge. Unfortunately, only half of our group made it in time for the six o'clock cream tea deadline. The walking wounded had to make do with a pint of beer. No prizes for guessing which camp yours truly was in.

I suspect that we may have made a slight impression on the inhabitants of Clovelly. There had been a slight mix-up over the rooms at our hotel, requiring two of our number to be located in a B&B a few doors further down the hill and two of our number almost came to blows when one suggested to the organiser of our little sojourn that he deserved a discount. Thankfully, after a few heated words at the dinner table they went outside and hugged it out. Eyebrows had been raised earlier in the Beer Garden when another of the Lads dropped his jar of Vaseline! The same Lad prompted more comedy by wearing a pair of old comfy slippers in which to descend the precarious cobbled slope to the pub at the quay after dinner. He is prone to blisters you see. I am not sure if news of our presence had preceded us to the pub, but once there one of the locals stated "you Lads must be either divers or fishermen". Unfortunately, neither.

Some of the loudest exchanges within our merry band, however, were around whose turn it was to share the double bed. Fortunately, I was excluded from this debate as I had paid extra for single occupancy throughout the weekend. As much as I love my mates, they snore, smell and fart, and, I like my privacy in the bathroom. And, I wish to spare them all the experience of me talking in my sleep. The two brothers-in-law unfortunately drew the short straws and had to share the double bed. This was rather un-nerving for the younger of the two (now known as the young gimp) as this was his first time on the Lads' Walk and the rest of us somehow gave him the impression that this was some sort of initiation rite. He too had spied the Vaseline earlier in the night. Whatever, the two brothers-in-law made a pact that whatever happened in the room, stayed in the room. And so it did. There was not a single muttering of spooning or an involuntary erection at the breakfast table.

Myself and one other unfortunately failed a late fitness test in the morning. We were not considered to be up to the full arduous ten miles or so from Clovelly to Hartland Quay. So, we offered to shuffle the cars, fill up on diesel, take in a coffee and the newspapers at Bude, and to start walking from the opposite end in order to meet up with the rest of the boys along the route.

Bude is a dump and seemingly bereft of a Starbucks or a single umbrella under which to perch while sipping a Latte. And so we ended up in a tiny, old-fashioned cafe where we were joined by a group of old people with Eastend accents and leathery faces lined like the streets of Venice. They had left their dogs howling in the car outside and reminisced about how one of their number had once been so sick eating spotted dick and custard that they hadn't been able to eat it for years afterwards. Bizarrely, one of the old girls ordered an Espresso coffee "but not too strong!"

Suitably refreshed, my fellow invalid and I commenced our walk to meet our mates. Bloody hell. What the buggers hadn't told us was that the stretch that we were doing was the hardest of the lot. And we had to do it twice. There and back. We endured five miles of agony. It was one steep descent followed by one steep climb after another. We were, frankly, buggered.

In truth, we are all beginning to feel our age now. Most of us have resorted to using walking poles to take the pressure of ageing joints. And, those who didn't this year have vowed to do so next. The downside is that we are now so slow at the walking bit that we leave ourselves very little time for the drinking bit before collapsing in our beds through exhaustion. However, while we are all carrying a few more pounds than we have in the past, we, to a man, managed to suck it all in on cue while the very attractive blonde in the tight leggings walked past us at Bucks Mill. There was certainly no VPL there! Nice.

Thanks for a great weekend guys and see you next year. Now, where are those details of my BUPA subscription.

First, let me say that coming up with the idea for Black Tuesday was right up my alley. When Penguin

First, let me say that coming up with the idea for Black Tuesday was right up my alley. When Penguin asked me to come up with 10 story ideas based off news stories, I was in hog heaven. I was already doing that! I stalk sites like CNN and Salon, and I even subscribe to Reuter's Oddly Enough news. So when I read how actress Rebecca Gayheart had accidentally killed a child with her car, the seed for Black Tuesday started to bloom (and what eventually got Penguin to buy Black Tuesday).

That said, I feel like I am one of the most receptive people out there in terms of getting inspired--sort of like a lightning rod for all things inspirational. I get inspiration from just about anything, and these ideas are scrawled on check registers, gum wrappers, even those subscription cards in the middle of magazines.

For instance, I get inspiration from the mom at Target threatening that if the five-year-old doesn't put down the Elmo bathsoap, Santa's not going to come. I get inspiration from the line in a magazine article that talks about Charlize Theron getting discovered while throwing a temper tantrum in a bank line. I get inspiration when I stand on the side of the road, getting offered a glass of water from a woman who lives in a trailer twenty feet where I just had a car accident. But here are a few ideas about how to become a lighting rod for inspiration you may not know about:

1) I get inspired while I'm, uh, using the facilities. Or on the treadmill. Or at a stoplight. Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in our stories that our brains are constantly churning and we can't figure out how to solve a plot point/fix a character flaw/come up with a title that will make our publisher smile with relief. I find my best thinking time is when I have a clear mind, such as when I'm thinking about getting to the post office before it closes (i.e., at a stoplight) or trying not to die as I sprint the last two minutes (i.e., on the treadmill) or praying the lock holds while someone outside is pounding on the door (i.e., using the facilities). The point I'm trying to get to is that you have to allow yourself to have a blank mind. It's okay. You're not doing your story a disservice by putting it on a back burner. You know what they say about a watched kettle, after all... (Cliches are my drug of choice, people.)

2) Hello. I'm Susan, and I'm a collager. I know that other writers admit to this--namely Linda Lael Miller and Jennifer Crusie--but I became obsessed with collages when I was about 10, cutting out my favorite dresses/houses/furniture from magazines and splicing them together into those static-cling photo books. I now do that for my stories, and I do them in my cheap paint program that my husband made me download for free off the Internet (Gimp--it does the job, but I miss my namebrand paint program!). Anyway, I find the actors that most resemble my hero and heroine, and then I find the heroine's house, the heroine's town (or at least a town that would resemble hers), maybe the dress she wears during a pivotal scene, possibly the candy she's obsessed with, or the jalopy she drives to school. The point is to spend an afternoon making your protagonist real. And once you have, turn it into your desktop so that it's constantly there to nudge you when you're blocked and need an idea about what your protagonist's world needs in order for it to be torn asunder.

3) One day, I really, really, REALLY want to give a workshop about why writers should watch more TV. Inevitably, I find a way to dig myself out of a go-nowhere scene by watching an episode of True Life or Dr. Phil and I get struck by a nugget of gold. The key? Watching documentaries (or, more aptly, documentary-lites) helps me round out characters. For instance, where else can you get inspired by an overweight girl who enters beauty pageants and dates a guy 50 pounds lighter than her (True Life)? Then again, maybe this is the curse of the new mom who lives in Small Town, America. I can't exactly get out too often to experience real life. I know a lot of people like this, actually. So c'mon, people, live your life vicariously through TV! It's not like I'm asking you to do lines of coke or watch Barney or anything.

4) People need people--specifically, writers need routine meetings with their critique groups to brainstorm and trip over a spark of inspiration. For instance, it was while I was at a face-to-face meeting with my critique group in Phoenix (who have been my online group ever since I moved 3,000 miles away two years ago) that one partner told me something that would've resonated with her as a girl with no money and no hopes (which is the gist of my protagonist in my second book). My oh-so-wise partner said, "A trip to the grocery store used to be painful, looking for generics, sales, dented cans, and never getting to buy what you really wanted." (This is a paraphrase, but you get the idea.) Her heartfelt words drawn from her own experience gave me a better opening scene. And perhaps, just perhaps, a stronger theme. Thank you, S4.

5) And here's one more cliche for you: I get ideas while reading writing books. But don't become a writing book obsessive compulsive. I've known some people who just read writing books and haven't really put finger to keyboard to actually write anything. I pick up a writing book probably twice a year, when I'm stuck. Lately, I've been reading Write Away by Elizabeth George. It was while I was reading her book aloud to my baby (hey, it helps her fall asleep AND mommy gets some reading done) that I fell onto these words: "To avoid merely reporting on a setting, to render it instead--which implies bringing it to life--the craftsman puts place into action, knowing that the best use of details comprises details in motion." I actually slowed down over these words since I'm trying to world-build a small New England town, and these words came at the exact right moment.

Here's hoping you get struck by inspirational lightning soon. Just be receptive. And wear a lighting rod.

Well lets begin with my laptop shell we? If you have been following like lots of you have, you know that my laptop has had problems, okay a little more than problems, with two sound problems in two weeks. First one where my headphone jack was broken and not allowing some audio to make it through to my headphones.

The second being that my HD Manger seems to think that I have headphones in but the I don't. So, as I said I would, I took it back up there yesterday (Sunday). So I'm basically back on my sisters computer, my old computer. They said I have first priority but I think they were just trying to cover their asses. Overnight deliver is good, my laptop has already gotten to the repair center.

Hopefully I won't get it back screwed up again, or else I'll be raising some hell.

I'll be trying to post some work soon, I'm going to take my time on it. I need to install my photo editing software on this pc, which I haven't done yet. I was really hoping to wait till I got my laptop fixed but after it came back and being broke again I just can't. I have so many stocks I want to use, and I have ideas that I don't want to lose.

As you may have noticed, and one of the big changes, the name of the site has changed to Maxus Ghost, which is the name of my design group that I will be creating. I also have changed my username to Josie Wolf, Which will make no sense but thats another blog post. When I get close to it I'll tell you.
