This OS is so simple to use (maybe too much...I missed the hard SCIM configuration for input japanese in some distros...;-)) and it's generally fast. It's fast to boot, fast to shutdown and fast to open dedicated intel applications.The graphic is good and clear, there are a lot of colours, wonderful icons and nice widgets (but a full customization of Compiz-Fusion is SO superior;-)). The terminal is often useless, but eventually give you the power to manage some hardcore situations.

As an addicted Linux user one of my fears was about the lack of osx freeware software for my work but after some hours I found (near) everything I need without using Vmware software or Bootcamp. Here some examples:

Fugu is a nice ftp-sftp-ssh frontend which also includes a console.A must; I also discovered macports, an intersting way to use open-source X11 or Aqua based software and in the list I saw...Putty!My old friend, please follow me even in the Mac universe:-)

Ooooooh.....Microsoft did it??A native osx remote desktop client for connecting to windows machines??

Simpyburns does the hard job of burning cd/dvd for free. Very light and useful. For audio cd you can obiouvsly use ITunes, that works good even if it's a little "heavy" software.

Free office application. Neooffice is sincerely not fast as the last Open Office, but it's full of osx native stuffs since its born and for example I've no problem input japanese and other languages in this software. 

More to comes....As graphic editor the right choice coud be Gimp for osx, that works good with after the X11 install as you can read in the help section of the community.

I personally believe that the bulk of Internet/computer users have really no need to stay with the giant MS anymore.  The average user, who is not a games player, is simply interested in Internet/Email/word-processing and a few other utils.  All of these can be found with Linux, the system runs quicker, there are less problems and the traditional "Linux installation fears" are disappearing.

Why would anyone want to upgrade their machine, when better performance can be achieved with their current system running Linux?  I think in todays climate there are many people who will not want to spend the money upgrading their machines to run a package that not only still has issues, but requires an increasingly hefty spec, just to get functionality out of it.

Why would the average user want MS office, when openoffice or Abiword are free?

Maybe times are changing for alternative operating systems?

We can only hope.

Destroying Elements

Lazy deletion strategy.

Note that the two basic deletion strategies are very low level functions. They simply mark as deleted the corresponding entries without affecting the rest of the structures. So for example if you delete a vertex with these structures without checking that all the faces incident on it have been removed you create a non consistent situation...

Similarly, but less dangerously, when you delete a face its vertices are left around so at the end you can have unreferenced floating vertices.

If your algorithm performs deletion the size of a container could be different from the number of valid element of your meshes (e.g.:

m.vert.size() != m.vn
m.face.size() != m.fn

Therefore when you scan the containers of vertices and faces you could encounter deleted elements so you should take care with a simple !IsD() check:

In some situations, particularly when you have to loop many many times over the element of the mesh without deleting/creating anything, it can be practical and convenient to get rid of deleted elements by explicitly calling the two garbage collecting functions:

After calling these function it is safe to not check the IsD() state of every element and always holds that:

Adjacency relations

VCG meshes DO NOT store edges, only vertex and triangles. Even the basic adjacdncy relations has to be explicitly computed. We always try to do not store per-edge information and keep them only more or less implicitly. This is simply there are many algorithms that do not require it and the cost of updating/storing should be avoided when possible. In many cases algorithms that seems based on some kind

Typical example are border flags. Each face keep a bit for each of its sides saying if that face has a boundary on that side or not. This information can be accessed by mean of the IsB(i) function. To compute the border flags there are various algorithm according to the available topological informations.

A Microsoft após ter adquirido a empresa Caligari, proprietária e desenvolvedora do software TrueSpace o coloca à disposição dos usuários completamente sem custo, além disto existe um completo manual do usuário em formato pdf e vídeos tutoriais para serem baixados junto com o aplicativo principal, a oferta é espantosa quando você considera que cada vídeo de treinamento sendo oferecido à custo zero era antes vendido ai pelos 70 dólares, nada mau e você pode baixar os arquivos todos da versão em inglês aqui, note que é necessário registro para que você prossiga com o download.

Inside vcg folder you will find 4 sub-folders:

• vcg: this is the core of the library, where all the algorithms and data structures are defined. This part is pure, quite heavily templated, C++ code with STL support for common data structures and algorithms. You will not find a single include from here to anything else than standard libraries. Note that core part is made of header files (.h files) only.
• wrap: here you will find the wrapping of VCG concepts towards specific needs/contexts/libraries. For example you will find all the code to import/export meshes from the hard disk in many formats, or the routines for rendering triangle meshes with OpenGL, supports for common GUI tools like a trackball, and so on..
• apps: this folder contains the command line applications developed with the VCG Lib. Many (much more) examples can be found in MeshLab. The apps/simple directory contains a sub-collection of very basic apps. A good starting point for beginners!

Partendo dal presupposto che odio i cd/dvd, capirete facilmente perchè amo questo programma :) Daemon Tools Lite è la versione gratuita di Daemon Tools Pro, chiamato tempo fa semplicemente Daemon Tools, ed era completamente free... Poi è diventato famoso e allora l'hanno messo a pagamento. Per fortuna ne è rimasta una versione free (fino a qualche versione fa, con spyware annesso) ed è quella di cui vi parlerò oggi. Daemon Tools Lite è un emulatore di lettore cd/dvd, ovvero crea unità ottiche virtuali :)

Cerchiamo di capire cos'é una unità ottica virtuale: è semplicemente un lettore cd/dvd finto, non presente fisicamente nel pc, ma creato grazie a un software apposito, Daemon Tools Lite appunto :)

Ma a cosa serve un'unità ottica virtuale? Serve a caricare e usare cd/dvd virtuali, ovvero file compressi contenenti interi cd/dvd, copie speculari del supporto fisico reale. Una volta caricati si potranno usare come se fossero cd/dvd reali, con tutti i pregi/difetti di non usare un supporto reale, ma dello spazio su disco. Un pregio, per esempio, è la velocità di trasferimento dei dati (molto alta quando si usano dischi e non i cd/dvd), oppure il fatto che i dischi non si possono graffiare e si usurano di meno nel tempo :)

Daemon Tools Lite, una volta installato (e per questo richiederà il riavvio del sistema), si andrà a posizionare vicino l'orologio, con un quadratino rosso, che contiene il menù di Daemon stesso. Il menù, raffigurato qui in alto, consente di creare tante unità virtuali, di gestirle, caricando o smontando i vari dischi, attivando le emulazioni, ovvero dei piccoli Tweak per superare alcune protezioni dei dischi (attivandole, l'icona di Daemon Tools Lite diventa verde e non più rossa), oppure impostando alcune opzioni, come la lingua o far comparire una comoda barra per la gestione veloce di Daemon Tools Lite.

Parlavo in precedenza di spyware. Dopo la commercializzazione di Daemon Tools, che in precedenza era totalmente free, vennero create queste 2 fantomatiche versioni, la Lite gratis e la Pro a pagamento. Però la Lite conteneva spyware e schifezze varie, come barre inutili per explorer e impostazioni per la pagina iniziale dei vari browser. Per fortuna dall'ultima versione disponibiler al momento, il programma è divenuto spyware free e quindi vi consiglio di provarlo, facendo sempre attenzione alle varie impostazioni dei browser che potrebbe modificare durante l'installazione:

Quicksilver (Free)

I don't know how I lived for so long without Quicksilver. I've only been using it a short time and it's already changed the way I use my Mac. Basically, Quicksilver is an interface that, at its simplest, allows you to control your Mac mouse-free. You can search for and open programs in a few keystrokes (much faster than getting to your Applications folder in finder), assign keyboard shortcuts, and even use plugins to control the finer points of software you use everyday. For example, after calling up Quicksilver with Ctr-Space or a keyboard shortcut of your choice, you can start typing the name of an iTunes playlist and start playing it without ever going into iTunes. As a keyboard shortcut junky, I am enthralled with how much time this saves.

iGTD (Free)

I believe iGTD stands for "I Get Things Done" and holy crap I do now. This software is so much more than your standard to-do list. It lets you organize tasks by context (where you will complete it), project, and tags so that project management can be fine-tuned. Not only is this invaluable during production crunch time for student films (you can create sub-projects for each production department), but it is a great way to discipline writing, research, and general studying. For example, you might want to open a project for each script you start and add tasks like "finish character bios" or "write pages 6-12." The software integrates beautiful with iCal and thus my Palm Tungsten E2, so I carry my very organized tasks (and attached notes about them!) around with me all day. The only problem I have with this software is the lack of task delegation, which would be nice for group projects, preproduction, and club activities. Still, for personal task management, this takes the cake.  Did I mention there is a Quicksilver plugin so that you can add tasks on the fly? A great blog article at 43 Folders explains this here. Better yet, if you have MailTags (which I haven't "splurged" the $30 on yet), you can connect your tasks to Mail.app e-mail for quick reference!

Scrivener ($39.95)

This is where I write. "But wait, didn't you spend all of your 18th birthday cash on Final Draft back in freshman year?" Why, yes. Yes I did. And it was worth it since ultimately that's where I output industry-friendly scripts with proper formatting. But Scrivener is where I make the first draft... of ANYTHING. You can organize your writing project by folders and index cards that translate into outlines, which makes outlining a typical three-act so much easier. You can create folders outside of your text to hold brainstorming texts, research PDFs, websites, and other PDFs that you've found useful for your research. Plus it has tab-based screenplay formatting that translates fairly well to Final Draft!!! I've used this baby for everything from research papers to my Pushing Daisies spec.

Journler (Free)

This is a pretty powerful "journaling" app that can do oh so much more. You can create entries with embedded media files that are automatically dated (I am a dating fiend) and then organize them with tags and folders... Even smart folders that automatically organize based on your tagging! While on the writing side, I've found this a great way to organize freewrites and brainstorming before committing to a writing project (once it's a project I switch over to Scrivener), it's also great for taking class notes (set up a folder for each class!), keeping minutes at club meetings, and organizing random thoughts.

Celtx (Free)

I actually use this software more for pre-production than actual screenwriting, although it is a great alternative to more pricey screenwriting software. Its breakdown features are excellent for creating prop lists, keeping track of locations, and making schedules that reflect not just time but also what you need for those times. Until you've got the bucks to spend on a professional pre-production software, this fella is quite the useful app.

Alarm Clock (Free)

When your call time is at 5am, it's so much more pleasant to wake up to your "Booty-Shaking" playlist.

iCal/Mail.app/Address Book (Comes with Mac)

Ok, ok, this might sound obvious... But I'm always surprised how few people really use their "iLife" applications to their advantage. They integrate with so many applications (including iGTD and Google Calendar!) and sync with my Palm, so you can manage projects corporate-style without spending corporate bucks.

Genius (Free)

Ok, this one has a lot less to do with the "film" part of "film student," but as a student I had to give this flashcard software a nod. It's great for memorization (for my Lit. major I need to learn dozens of authors/titles/publication dates at a time) and language vocabulary-buildling. It even repeats cards according to which ones you get right and wrong.

Frame Thief (Free)

A shout-out to my animation homies. While I gave up the good art because I draw like a preschooler and sculpt like a first-grader, I still dapple in stop motion from time to time. This animation software is great to have on a laptop for instant gratification (ha, like that exists in animation) stop motion work. You can also set it up with a lightbox for pencil tests if you want to be fancy.

HandBrake (Free)

Takes your DVDs and makes them into iPod-friendly video files. While I prefer the original DVDs for viewing, this software is great for pulling TV episodes, shorts, and music videos from DVDs and then bringing them on the go for study, inspiration, or particularly long bus rides.

Tooble (Free)

YouTube on your iPod! Yes, it's possible.... with Tooble! Great for scene studies, keeping up with your favorite webisodes, and general good times.

NeoOffice (Free)

Who needs Word when NeoOffice takes care of all your word processing needs? Its spreadsheets are Excel-like heaven and this has been a staple for every task I've needed to complete.

Your computer takes a long time to boot and operates slowly.

Your Internet experience is slow.

Your Hard Drive is full.

I test new software on an almost daily basis, and I do the majority of that testing on a Dell OptiPlex 110 with 512 Meg of memory, running Windows XP Professional. Surprisingly, this is a 6 year old computer and 90%+ of the software and Internet testing that I perform, runs smoothly and adequately on this platform.

So keep in mind that for everyday work, word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and general Internet surfing you don't need the latest, greatest, and most expensive computer.

If your current operating system is Windows XP (and 93% of us run XP), read the requirements that Microsoft set out as the minimum requirements for a computer to run Windows XP when the operating system was released.

I have seen, even quite recently, machines which meet only these minimum requirements satisfy the needs of their users.

This article is not all encompassing, but let’s take a look at some of the alternatives you have before you replace what may be a perfectly functional computer which meets your current needs. If you do decide however, that upgrades to the system are required, a good rule of thumb is to purchase a new system if the upgrades total 50% or more of the cost of a new computer.

Your Hard Drive is full.

A full Hard Drive will not function efficiently since you require at least 2 - 3MB of free space for programs to run smoothly. CCleaner:

Running a Disk Cleaner will optimize systems by emptying the Recycle Bin, Temporary Setup Files, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Old Chkdsk Files, Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files, Offline Files, and so on. For a full and through cleanup, I highly recommend CCleaner. As well, you should consider copying archived files such as pictures and music, to CD’s or DVD’s to free space on the Hard Drive.

What Dirt?:

High heat and dirt are definite killers of system components! Just recently I had to replace a CPU on a client's machine due to resticted airflow caused by dirt on the CPU fan.

Check all connections.

Open the system and verify that all connections feel solid and are placed correctly. Double-check any accessory cards for a snug setting and good connections. Make sure cable tensions are appropriate.

Don't strain connections:

Having too much strain on a cable or connection can damage the cable, device, jack/node, or the computer. Be sure that there is plenty of slack in the cables on the device and computer ends. Excess strain may cause intermittent performance issues.

Malware Infections.

Once you have removed system-clogging clutter, ensured your Internet settings are properly optimized, are satisfied your system is not infected with malware, and performed the other simple maintenance, your old PC should satisfy you with its capabilities.
