Il primo che ho provato era Burn4free ma l'interfaccia era brutta e creava confusione con con tutti quei tasti messi senza un ordine preciso, poi c'erano dei pulsanti che portavano a dei siti, credo che si trattava di pubblicità e c'era rischio che il programma conteneva degli Adware e poi non permetteva di fare copie di CD/DVD e per questo motivo l'ho disinstallato.
Ho provato BurnAware Free (esiste una versione a pagamento ma le differenze sono poche), ha tutte le funzioni che servone per masterizzare (dati, cd audio, video) ma come al solito mancava la copia diretta di CD/DVD. L'interfaccia grafica e la migliore tra i programmi free, il programma si apre con una finestra che da la possibilità di scegliere il tipo di masterizzazione che si desidera e la finestra successiva e semplice e permette in pochi passi di effettuare la masterizzazione (BurnAware masterizza oltre tutti i formati di DVD masterizzabili anche i Blu-ray e HD-DVD).
CDburnerXP nelle precedenti versioni (ora siamo alla 4) non era compatibile con Windows Vista, qualche giorno fa ho scoperto che l'ultima versione e compatibile con Vista, l'ho provato. E' leggero come BurnAware free, all'avvio ti chiede se creare un disco dati o cd audio, comunque permette di creare anche dischi avviabili e video e rispetto agli altri anche copiare i CD/DVD (dal menu della sezione per la creazione di dischi dati). Masterizza oltre tutti i formati di DVD masterizzabili anche i Blu-ray e HD-DVD. E' facile da utilizzare e veloce ed è possibile utilizzarlo anche in ufficio (la licenza freeware non è solo per uso personale).
Un altro programma freeware per masterizzare e Starburn offre delle funzionalità più avanzate rispetto agli altri programmi (ma non sono indispensabili per la normale masterizzazione). Questo programma parte con una schermata tipo quella di Explorer di Windows (secondo me è un approccio sbagliato, può creare confusione negli utenti meno esperti). Dopo aver scelto il tipo di masterizzazione (questo programma non permette di copiare CD/DVD) si apre una piccola finestra che servirà, dopo alcune configurazioni, a inserire i files da masterizzare; non si possono trascinare i files direttamente all'interno della finestra (Drag and Drop), cosa che rallenta la preparazione del disco da masterizzare e la finestra troppo piccola dove inserire i files da masterizzare, la trovo poco pratica.
Io ho scelto tra BurnAware Free e CdburnerXP (gli altri software li avevo esclusi quasi subito) quest'ultimo, in quando CdBurnerXP tra quelli che ho descritto e l'unico che permette la copia di CD/DVD.
Per finire vi consiglio di tenere sul vostro PC o Pendrive DeepBurner Portable; semplice programma di masterizzazione che non necessita di installazione; basta scompattarlo ed è eseguibile. conviene però aspettare un po' ad aggiornare (direttamente da Ubuntu 7.10) in quanto a molte persone non riesce a causa del sovraccarico dei server. Il mio consiglio spassionato è quello di aspettare, magari qualche ora, o qualche giorno che le acque si calmino :D

In questi giorni ho provato alcuni programmi freeware/opensource disponibili in rete, per la compressione e decompressione di files (programmi simili a Winzip o Winrar ma gratuiti).
Per le mie prove ho scelto ZipGenius 6.03, 7zip 4.57, IZarc 3.81, Tugzip 3.5 (da una versione all'altra potrebbero cambiare i risultati); ne esistono altri ma credo che questi siano i migliori tra i freeware. Li ho messi a confronto con Winrar 3.71 (il migliore del genere a pagamento), per la compressione ho usato un files .xcf, formato del programma (GIMP) per il fotoritocco, non compresso; alcuni risultati mi hanno sorpreso guardate la tabella:

Per comprimere il file ho utilizzato i formati più conosciuti (Zip, 7z), in RAR comprime solo WINRAR essendo un formato proprietario, per chi non conosce 7z è un formato Open Source nato con il programma 7zip, lo utilizzano anche gli altri programmi, WINRAR rispetto agli altri li apre solamente.
Il formato che mi ha sorpreso e il .7z, pensavo che il miglior formato era il .RAR ma ho scoperto che il formato 7z e nettamente superiore nel livello di compressione (vedi tabella).
Tra questi programmi quello che apre e supporta più formati è Izarc ecco quali supporta (una parte di questi li può solo aprire):
7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO. ZipGenius come formati supportati è vicino a Izarc però su questo aspetto Izarc è sicuramente superiore.
Per quanto riguarda l'aspetto grafico il migliore è ZipGenius anche se Izarc è quello che assomiglia di più nel modo d'uso a Winrar (questo può facilitare chi usava Winrar a passare a Izarc), secondo me il peggiore e poco intuitivo a livello grafico è 7zip.
Per quanto riguarda le prestazioni per i .7z tutti i programmi free ottengono le stesse prestazioni (di poco inferiore Tugzip), credo che per il formato .7z essendo open source tutti questi programmi usano lo stesso codice per la compressione; ma per il formato Zip vince nettamente 7zip; 7zip tra i programmi testati è quello che ottiene risultati migliori in compressione.
Io alla fine ho scelto di utilizzare, Izarc con i .7z ottengo lo stesso risultato degli altri, con gli Zip è nella media, ma questo si può accettare visto l'enorme quantità di formati supportati, cosa che fa sempre comodo.
Se utilizzate uno di questi programmi Freeware/Open Source quale usate?

Le grandi software house dietro le distribuzioni GNU/Linux (come Novel, RedHat o Canonical) guadagnano con i contratti di assistenza e non con la vendita delle licenze; e per i più giovani voglio ricordarvi che questa non è una novità ma una strategia di mercato presente da decenni in alcuni mercati: i grandi software gestionali o i programmi che giravano sui grandi elaboratori fino agli anni 80-90 come gli AS/400 o gli S/36 di IBM venivano ceduti in licenza alle aziende che potevano utilizzarli, pagando solo l'addestramento del personale, le personalizzazioni ed un canone annuo di manutenzione per gli aggiornamenti previsti dalle leggi. Anche le software house che creavano i programmi personalizzati per le piccole e medie aziende utilizzavano questo approccio lasciando solitamente i sorgenti a disposizione del cliente. Ancora oggi esistono software house che pur non essendo legate in alcun modo all'opensource o al freesoftware preferiscono guadagnare sui servizi resi al cliente piuttosto che sulle licenze (è il caso di molte società che sviluppano programmi per le paghe o per la contabilità di piccoli uffici).

Secondo il me software opensource e/o free, pur non essendo necessariamente più economico rispetto all'acquisto delle licenze d'uso, porta sicuramente 2 vantaggi diretti:

1. il cliente ha la libertà di utilizzare il prodotto acquisito come preferisce e disponendo dei sorgenti può svincolarsi dal produttore in caso di problemi (ad esempio fallimento della ditta produttrice)
2. in caso di necessità si può utilizzare personale "locale" ridistribuendo i guadagni prevalentemente nella zona dove vive e quindi aiutando l'economia della sua nazione.

Bisogna dire che le grosse multinazionali (come ad esempio Microsoft, ma non solo) hanno sempre cercato di unire le 2 filosofie prendendo però i lati "negativi" di entrambe: prima mi paghi e non poco la licenza d'uso del prodotto e poi mi paghi se hai bisogno di aiuto e se proprio non va ti arrangi, ma negli ultimi 2-3 anni anche loro si stanno rendendo conto che il futuro del mercato IT si sposterà sempre più verso la vendita di servizi; questo è evidente quando colossi come Microsoft cercano di differenziare il loro mercato: Microsoft office Live, il tentativo di acquisizioni in corso di Yahoo, Albany, Zune ecc..

Non ci resta che aspettare e tifare per la squadra vincente (quella free ovviamente) :lol:

L'interfaccia del programma è semplice da utilizzare; in un'unica finetra mostra tutte le opzioni per la conversione del filmato: un menu' a tendina per scegliere il formato in uscita per il video e l'audio e il codec da utilizzare. Poi di seguito troviamo le opzioni per scegliere la qualità del video e dell'audio (bitrate,frame al secondo. risoluzione, frequenza etc.) la scelta è ampia e si potrà decidere in base all'utilizzo del filmato la qualità in uscita, da cui dipende anche lo spazio occupato dal files. In basso c'è uno spazio dove trascinare con il mouse il file video da convertire, nello stesso box è possibile con il tasto destro del mouse aprire un ulteriore menu tra cui si potrà scegliere il percorso di salvataggio del file in uscita; il programma permette anche di eseguire il video caricato (cliccando sui "tasti" in basso).
In definitiva, un programma semplice da utilizzare e completo, con un interfaccia che permette di avere in una sola finestra tutte le opzioni per la conversione, senza dover perdere tempo a cercarle tra i classici menu'.
Quando si avvia SUPER 2008 su Windows Vista, il programma segnala che con questo sistema operativo ci potrebbero essere dei problemi con alcuni condec, io ho provato a convertire un video, ma non ha dato problemi; non so a quali codec si riferisce ma comunque posso affermare che in generale con Windows Vista funziona.

La prima versione ufficiale di Ubuntu fu rilasciata nell'ottobre 2004 e fu debitamente chiamata «Version 4.10», così da introdurre il sistema di numerazione "A.MM". Mentre era ancora in sviluppo, «Version 4.10» era affettuosamente conosciuta come «The Warty Warthog», letteralmente "il facocero verrucoso", un nome che ha continuato a vivere ben oltre i consueti limiti temporali dei nomi in codice dei software in fase di sviluppo. Da allora in poi, ogni successivo rilascio è stato caratterizzato da un suo particolare nome in codice allitterante.

I primi giorni nella storia del progetto formarono le basi di molte convenzioni di nomenclatura che continuano tutt'oggi. Per esempio, la comunità originaria che provava la «Version 4.10» era chiamata «The Sounder», derivante dal nome collettivo abbinato a un gruppo di facoceri. La mailing list «The Sounder» esiste ancora come punto per le libere discussioni della comunità, e le versioni di sviluppo hanno sempre un nome derivato da un qualche animale.

Queste sono le edizioni già rilasciate e quelle in programma:

Per distruggere completamente i files che risiedono sul nostro hard disk abbiamo bisogno di un software molto potente che si chiama Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") che trovate QUI. E' un programma gratuito che presenta 2 versioni: una che dopo il download deve essere masterizzata su CD ed un'altra che dopo il download deve essere copiata su floppy disk. Le due versioni sono praticamente uguali, quindi scegliete voi quale delle due preferite...
Dopo aver scaricato il programma sul vostro computer e masterizzato su CD (oppure copiato su floppy), riavviate il computer e fate in modo tale che venga letto prima il lettore CD (oppure prima il floppy, dipende dalla versione del programma che avete scaricato) e non prima l'hard disk: se infatti viene letto prima l'hard disk risulta impossibile formattarlo!
Come si fa a far leggere prima il lettore CD (o prima il floppy disk)? Appena viene riavviato il computer premete F1 oppure CANC per entrare nel pannello di controllo del BIOS. Se tutto va bene apparirà una schermata con sfondo blu; a questo punto cerchiamo la sezione di solito chiamata "Boot sequence" e qui troveremo un elenco ordinato di periferiche.
Modifichiamo l'elenco in maniera tale che venga prima il CD (o prima il floppy disk) e poi l'hard disk... Ora usciamo dal pannello di controllo del BIOS e riavviamo il computer tenendo il CD con DBAN nel lettore (oppure il floppy disk con DBAN nel lettore floppy). Dovrebbe partire il programma con la sua schermata iniziale: premiamo invio ed entreremo nella modalità interattiva. Scegliamo (premendo la barra spaziatrice) nella lista che appare l'hard disk da formattare e poi premiamo il tasto "M" sulla tastiera. Questo tasto ci permette di scegliere il metodo di formattazione da utilizzare...ed è qui che si vede la vera potenza di DBAN!!! Si possono scegliere varie modalità di formattazione:

1. DoD 5220-22: standard di eliminazione approvato dal Ministero della Difesa americana, prevede 7 sovrascritture prima della cancellazione definitiva;
2. RCMP TSSIT OPS-II (Royal Canadian Mounted Police Technical Security Standard for Information Technology): standard di eliminazione che prevede 8 sovrascritture prima della cancellazione definitiva;
3. Gutmann: la tipologia di formattazione più "robusta", prevede ben 35 sovrascritture;
4. PRNG Stream: modalità di formattazione che prevede 4 o 8 sovrascritture.

Inoltre il programma permette anche di eseguire una "formattazione normale" ma la distruzione completa dei files non è assicurata...

DBAN è un programma potente ed un suo errato utilizzo può cancellare parti del disco che non avremmo voluto cancellare: quindi, leggete bene tutte le istruzioni prima di utilizzarlo e ricordate che DBAN cancella tutte le partizioni e la tavola delle partizioni senza possibilità di ripristino.
Ciò nonostante non penso che una formattazione usuri più di tanto un hard disk. Ciò che danneggia maggiormente un hd sono gli urti, le forti vibrazioni, il calore e in genere i forti sbalzi di temperatura, l'umidità, gli sbalzi di tensione, l'accensione e spegnimento troppo frequenti ma è comunque necessario fare attenzione.

The Open Web Vancouver conference is being held April 14-15 at the Vancouver Conference Center. It’s a rebranding of last year’s highly successful Vancouver PHP conference. Like its predecessor, this year’s conference is mostly a volunteer effort, and takes advantage of both local and international experts to present a well-rounded program to a small audience.

I chose my topic because I’ve been writing about aspects of this topic in my blog for about a year now, and those entries have been well-received – probably because there’s a real need. A few free and open source software (FOSS) organizations, such as the Linux Foundation and the Software Freedom Law Center, have people and policies in place for dealing with the media, but most do not.

The truth is, typical FOSS developers tend to be suspicious of the media – unsurprisingly, since marketing communications experts tend not only to have an entirely different mindset and to be absolutely clueless about technology. Yet many projects could benefit from more publicity in order to attract new developers or funding, and much of the community would like to know about them.

I’m still developing what I will say, and I have to admit that my teaching skills are rusty. However, my instinct is to forego the usual slide show, and make the talk as interactive with the audience as possible. Topics I’m considering include an explanation of where the free software media stands between traditional media and free software, why cultivating a relationship is worth everybody’s trouble, and how to pitch news and have more of a chance of receiving coverage.

It occurs to me that, with this talk, I’ve come full circle. When I was a technical writer a decade ago, I used to say that my job consisted of explaining the geeks to the suits. Now, I could be said to explaining the suits (or, perhaps more accurately, the shorts and sandals) to the geeks.
