Vacation season is right around the corner and I've always had such a difficult time trying to pack all of my fave beauty products to take on the road. I don't want to leave anything behind but I also don't want to lug around tons of bottles and kits. Add to that the crazy liquid limitations for air travel and you have one stressful situation for any Beauty Maven. Lucky for us, there are several great travel-ready beauty kits out there. Here are some of my faves:

Each spring Frederic Fekkai unleashes its Summer hair products, and i just checked SEPHORA and lo and behold! Its in!
I've been scoping like a hawk SEPHORA stores and website for over a month now and it has totally paid off.
The only complaint i have: WTF the price has gone up $4.oo?! The price we pay for perfection.. looks like i'm going to have to fork over a little bit more green, cuz this product is handed to us from the Gods my friends. If there were ever THE hair product to have its this puppy. Summer Hair provides perfect waves, UV protection, and styling protection, as well as killer shine (and texture). Oh, not to mention a great fragrance, if i remember correctly it had a tropical coconut-y smell.
Looks like i'm going to have to buy off the SEPHORA website, there's not a darn store here in grand ole west Texas.
But i need perfect "beachy" waves and definition, and after trying so many products claiming to provide such perfection, i've come to find they are all liars. This is the ONLY one out there. Seriously.

“I’m going on a trip to Miami and it’s very hot and humid there. I love the sunshi

"I'm going on a trip to Miami and it's very hot and humid there. I love the sunshine, but whenever I go there I have very bad hair days. I never know what to put on my hair in that weather. Should I use a humectant or an anti-humectant? What is the difference?" - Betsy, via email

Hi Betsy! I have thick, curly hair and I definitely consider humidity my #1 arch enemy. It's one of the biggest contributors to bad hair days everywhere and it's very hard to avoid. Face it, you can't escape the weather. Even when you're inside the humidity will find you, but there are certain products to help you repel it.

On humid days, hair seems to quickly soak in the extra moisture from the air leaving you looking like the top contender in a frizzy hair contest. But what to do? You want to find a product that provides a barrier between your hair and the air's moisture. Curly or straight, you want an anti-humectant.

A good anti-humectant is a non-water based product (obviously you don't want more moisture) that will coat your hair strands and keep the moisture out. Think waxes, serums, silicones and shine products. Anything that provides a barrier between your hair and the environment. Top anti-humectants are:

BioSilk Silk Therapy, Terax Gloss Finishing Serum, Bumble and bumble Sumotech Pomade, Biolage Smoothing Serum, Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream (pictured).

A humectant product does just the opposite, it preserves moisture in the hair. If your hair is dry, parched and lacks hydration you want a product that will help increase the moisture content. You should be on the lookout for any water based products dedicated to hydrating and conditioning your hair. These products will help moisturize the hair strands:

L'anza Tamanu Cream Shampoo, Kerastase Nutritive Bain Satin 3 Shampoo, L'anza Kukui Nut Conditioner, Bumble and bumble Tonic Lotion.

Don't be surprised if you need both at the same time, especially if your hair is on the dry side. Try a hydrating shampoo and conditioner (humectants) to replace the moisture in your hair, and then follow with a smoothing balm and shine serum (anti-humectants) to style your strands and lock out the dreaded "H" word - humidity.

I am usually not a big fan of the matchy-matchy, but I do believe in using a shampoo and conditioner

I am usually not a big fan of the matchy-matchy, but I do believe in using a shampoo and conditioner duo dedicated to your particular hair texture and type from time to time. Whether your hair is straight or curly, black, brown or blonde, color-treated or thinning, or a combination of these, there is a specific set out there tailored for your individual hair concerns and needs.

Using a shampoo and its conditioning cousin together on a regular basis actually increases the benefits of each, and really gives your hair that one, two punch it needs. Over time my hair gets 'used to' certain products so I tend to switch back and forth between brands every few weeks, but I always keep the following (from the straight hair section) in my shower rotation. There is a reason for the matching names, they work together - what a concept right? Check out these product lines, they definitely do not disappoint:

Silky, smooth and straight: Pureology Super Straight, Abba True Shine (pictured above), L'anza Strait-Line, Frederic Fekkai Glossing.

Curls, twirls and waves: Davines LOVE Curl Enhancing (pictured left), Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious, Abba True Curls.

My hair has "natural" highlights (shhh!): CHI Ionic Color Protector, Pureology,

Thinning, flat or fine: Murad Professional Treatment, Biolage Bodifying Volumatherapie, Nioxin.

So many of us have a combination of hair concerns and styling needs and the good news is there are plenty of choices out there. Thanks to focused formulations and innovative ingredients we can each find our own dynamic duo. See? Sometimes matchy-matchy is a good thing.

As the breakout star of the entire Bain de Terre product line, and one of our best-sellers, this advanced formula serum contains microscopic spheres that slowly release rose hip and evening primrose oils to restore luster and impart a high gloss to dull, dry, overworked hair. This anti-frizz recovery complex instantly repairs the outer cuticle layers of the hair to mend and prevent split ends. Encapsulated melanin, a natural pigment, provides stronger color protection against damage and fading.

How I like to use it: Use a few drops of Bain de Terre Shine Serum on wet hair to restore the hair’s natural luster and repair the dryness and split ends, then a few more drops on dry hair to finish your style and add a hi-gloss shine.

Bonus points: The infused essential oils will leave your hair with a healthy smooth shine that’s never greasy, and you just may wonder where all your split ends have gone!
Eliminate frizz and restore the richness and shine back to your hair with Davines Momo Moisturizing Anti-Frizz Protective Fluid. Rhizobian Gum moisturizes and adds natural body, Elder Extract creates a protective barrier, and Grapefruit Seed Extract provides pollution protection. If that isn’t enough, Davines also added a dose of Jojoba oil, Silicones, and Mica to restore the softness and shine dry, frizzy hair so desperately lacks.

Trade in your dry, dull hair for silky smooth strands with this leave-in treatment from the Kérastase Oléo-Relax collection. Not only is this one of the best frizz fighters we’ve seen (and my personal favorite!) it’s an InStyle Magazine’s Best Beauty Buy winner “Best Straightening/Anti-Frizz Product”. This leave-in smoothing serum smoothes dry, rebellious hair making it softer and adding long-lasting frizz protection. A few pumps on towel-dried hair will take those unmanageable, unruly locks from dry to shiny right before your eyes.

Bonus points: A little on wet hair will not only protect and de-frizz, it also helps take out the tangles!
What I love: Oleo-Relax won’t weigh your hair down, especially if you have curls like I do, and I swear it improves the texture of your hair with just a pump or two of product. See more from Kerastase.

We’ve all been there before…. Frightened and anxious as the swivled chair rotates around and we are faced with our reflection in the massive mirror. The hair dresser utters some inaudible, French (tres jolie!) and we are meant to coo in adoration. But sometimes, as rare as it may be, we are turned around in that chair only to discover that we don’t recognize the HAIR that’s gawking back at us! Welcome to victims of a hair trauma…
Here is a fantastic hair horror story shared by my hair-crazed friend, Jenny Cohen:
More or less in her own words -
"I went to Oscar Blondie to get my hair colored and when they washed the color off I could tell that it lacked a brightness. There was no definitive hair color (i.e. blonde, brunette, auburn, etc.) that I could categorize my new mane. It lacked everything. I looked insipid, ashy and sullen. It literally looked like a beige couch. Not only had my base been lifted to match my skintone exactly and provide no contrast, the highlights were ashy and beige. I told him that this wasn't what I asked for and he said, "well beige is the new blonde." I replied, "you'll be hearing from my lawyer." Meanwhile, crying and hiding my beige disaster, I came home and immediately jumped into the shower. I washed my hair nearly six times to try and strip the color - to the point that the cuticle was inflamed and my hair was puffy and my fingers were pruned. By the third day I actually took draino and poured it on my locks in an attempt to reverse the effects of the colorist. It worked to strip the color, but it also broke the rest of my hair to pieces."

I’m sure that you all are wondering, with a psycho hair freak such as Jenny, what products does she actually trust to put on her beloved tressles.
ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE!!!
Jenny’s favorite hair products:
Kerastase Oleo-Relax Ultimate Controlling Elixer Serum – “This is the only oil product that doesn’t dull my color. It gives more texture to the color on the ends. It creates more of a golden sheen. Only apply on dry hair to the ends. Use less then a dime size,” cautions Jenny.
Kerastase Mini Travel Set #2 Shampoo and Conditioner for thick hair, Masqueintense – available at salon’s that carry the ENTIRE line, only. This is very hard to come by. Jenny says, “Make sure the label reads, ‘Made in Spain’ to ensure that the product is authentic.” “I only use the travel size products after a trip to Miami where my hair, texture and color looked more vibrant and healthy when using the travel set. I believe that the ingredients in the travel sized products is more potent then the larger, mass-produced sizes,” explains Jenny.
Frederic Fekkai Technician Shampoo for Dry, Damaged, Color-Treated Hair – “This is the only shampoo that I will alterante Kerastase with. It actually strips the hair, thus brightening it, because it is such a strong shampoo. With the avocado oil, it’s better for humidity because it weighs the hair down,” says Jenny.
Frederic Fekkai Protein Rx Reparative Conditioner – “I only use the product in the bottle, not in the jar because I don’t like the way the jar looks. I’m not experiemental with products because using a product that contains the wrong ingredients can ruin my hair. I use this conditioner once a month, only in California where the water is softer. It strengthens the hair, prevents breakage and brings the color back to its true state.”
Mason Pearson Child’s Sensitive Hair Brush - “I use this brush when I travel to detangle and distribute oils because it doesn’t contain any nylon brisstles. Nylon’s plastic so it breaks the hair if it’s not first detangled.”
Mason Pearson Junior Hair Brush - “I use this brush after the detangling brush to massage the scalp. And then I get into the shower and I wash my hair.”
EXTRA TIP:
Jenny swears by only washing her hair every three to four days. “Only have a professional blow it out,” she says. “If you do it yourself, you are bound to break the hair. This is one of the times when it’s imperative to ‘not try this at home.’”
P.S. “If you want some lift in your hair, brush it upside down with a round brush and bend the ends,” adds Jenny.
