After a few reminders from people, I finally got to do the signing of FOSDEM party (including some people who gave me slips). Seems like some people follow carefully who didn't signed they key... I hope now everyone will be satisfied (:

If you didn't get my signature yet, please let me know... I don't want to hear the same complaints next year (that's wasn't fun ): ). For obvious reason I can only re-send you an existing signature I have.

The fun part of the signing party is to meet people and ask them questions according to their e-mail addresses. Even better is to thank them for the work on free software I use. This year I thanked Patrick Brunschwig, the enigmail author. But also like to thank Thijs Kinkhorst from squirrelmail and Eike Rathke from openoffice. It was fun to meet some fellow Debian Developer I didn't know from DebConfs.

Como todos los años, LibreSoft  ha organizado la sala de investigación de dicho encuentro, en donde se han hablado de los proyects que tenemos en curso en el grupo más presentaciones de algunos papers de investigadores europeos.

Pero no solo vamos a hablar de "trabajo" sino que la noche de bruselas también da mucho juego por mucho aunque alguno diga que no. Y allí estaba ella Lish, medio belga medio sueca. Rubia, como no, y estudiante de High School, era eso no Teo? Y ya nos marcó desde el viernes, aunque no la vimos el sábado, por desgracia. Pero bueno esa tierra promete mucho mucho, habrá que volver y estarse por allí una temporadilla no? Lo dije con Inglaterra cuando estuve en verano y mira donde estoy. Y otra de las buenas cosas de este viaje es que no volví a Inglaterra, sino que volé a España, Madrid, para el F2F meeting de BEinGRID. Proyecto en el que estoy trabajando en BT, pero eso para otra entrada.

• Bruksela jest fajna.
• Takoż i źarcie w La Boussole i Le Roy d'Espagne. W tej drugiej knajpie polecam "karbonadę po flamandzku na piwie Leff Brune". Ponadto jeśli ktoś ma mało czasu, a chce przejść przyspieszony kurs belgijskiego piwa - za osiem euro z hakiem ww "Królu Hiszpanii" dostanie "palette degustation", czyli 5 malutkich (0,1 l.) piw, każde innego rodzaju. Wiedziałem, że Leff jest całkiem niezłe, teraz okazało się, że i Hoegaarden również. :)
• Brytyjski lumpenproletariat wieczorami w Brukseli zachowuje się równie kulturalnie jak w Krakowie.
• FOSDEM rośnie. Wprawdzie w tym roku nie było Richarda Stallmana (2006), ani sensacji pod tytułem "Java na GPL!" (2007), a "opening keynote" poświęcona była Linuksowi w Hollywood, za to sale poszczególnych projektów F/LOSS pękały w szwach. Problem gandalfa - za dużo interesujących sesji jednocześnie - nie był tylko jego problemem.
• W głównej sali jakieś 30% laptopów stanowiły MacBooki - białe, czarne i "Pro". Rok temu ilość iBooków i MacBooków łącznie w głównej sali nie przekraczała 10%.
• Spod Mac OS X wyświetlane były prezentacje w sali głównej - przynajmniej te, które widziałem: dwa początkowe wykłady (Linux w Hollywood, patenty) i "endgame".  Podobnie - wszystkie prezentacje (poza jedną, Roberta Kaisera) w sali Mozilli. Zdecydowana większość w Apple Keynote, niektóre w S5 pod Firefoksem lub SeaMonkey. Nie zauważyłem nic w OpenOffice...
• O tym, że sala Mozilli w sobotę zamieniła się w saunę, wiecie już, jeśli przeczytaliście post Huberta... :)
• "Mozilla is going mobile and this time we mean it!". Firefox Mobile będzie dostępny dla Linuksa, Windows CE (czy jak to-to się teraz zwie) i być może również Symbiana. Nie jest jasna przyszłość Firefoksa Mobile na iPhonie/iPodzie touch, jako że SDK do iPhone'a wciąż pozostaje zagadką.
• Tenże Firefox Mobile powstanie na bazie XULRunnera. W przeciwieństwie do śp. Minimo będzie więc zawierał interfejs zbudowany w XUL i będzie obsługiwał rozszerzenia. Tak więc możecie się spodziewać, że np. AdBlocka i GreaseMonkey odpalicie na smartfonie. :)
• Mozilla Prism (dawniej "WebRunner") - dzięki niej można zbudować przeglądarkę przeznaczoną dla jednej konkretnej witryny (czy raczej: aplikacji webowej). Nie przerabiaj swojej aplikacji webowej na desktopową, zrób sobie tylko do niej w trzy minuty własną przeglądarkę. Jeśli ten projekt wejdzie w stadium 1.0 w rozsądnym terminie, klepanie czegokolwiek pod Adobe AIR będzie tylko stratą czasu.
• Mozilla Weave - czyli profil przeglądarki dostępny zdalnie, za to szyfrowany po stronie klienta, dzięki czemu zachowana zostaje prywatność. Eksperymentalny projekt Mozilla Labs.
• Miro - czyli społecznościowa konkurencja dla Joosta. Kolejne świetne zastosowanie XULRunnera.
• Polska rośnie w siłę. Przynajmniej jeśli chodzi o liczbę użytkowników Firefoksa.
• Mozilla.org skończyła 10 lat, z której to okazji zaproszono nas na kręgle. :)
• Ha, w końcu udało mi się wziąć na chwilę w łapska OLPC. :)
• I Eee PC też, do tego z OpenSolarisem na pokładzie.

No i to by było na tyle. ;-)

Aha, tutaj są zdjęcia. Nie ma ich wiele, bo straciłem cierpliwość do mojego aparatu...

I've planned the lectures I'd like to go to, always keeping an alternative in case the first one isn't interesting enough for me. I left some lectures early to get to other lectures (usually leaving during the Q&A parts). And some lectures even required me to arrive a bit earlier just to get a seat (especially important if you intend to stay for a few lectures in a row).

While rushing back and forth between rooms, I've tried to find I have questions for and people I'm interested to talk with. Moving enough at the campus usually means you'll eventually find them.

The only problem with the whole process is that it's consuming a lot of effort and energy during these two days, and I'm feeling exhusted by the end of FOSDEM. But the productivity of talking so many people face to face and getting new information from the lectures makes it all worthwhile.

So my advise is to try and use FOSDEM to expend your horizons instead of going to these familiar talks about stuff you probably already know enough,

Studies are soon-to-be-finished and I actually began my final year internship that ends in June, when I'll graduate. For one week now, I have been a trainee at Nokia, Helsinki (Finland). This is quite a big move for me, since I never really left France until now. I'm really enjoying that new environment, this is challenging to adapt, on a personal side. I'm working in the OSSO Multimedia team at Nokia and I got surprised of how my arrival went well, people are really cool and I'm enjoying to be there, that's a great opportunity to learn from them and actually discover the "big company" world, even using open source technologies. I'm sure that experience will bring me a lot and I'm not waiting for less on that.

So it's Sunday night and I'm in Brussels (Belgium), spending some cool time with friends in the hotel hall. That was my first FOSDEM and I enjoyed it. Well, the classic thing about FOSDEM is to say that it was too short, and it was, but I can add my very own observations as well. The top advantage of such conferences is to gather and share some words with cool and respected people that you already know, like the Collabora crew and the GNOME community or meet with guys you aspire to share with, like the Vala developers. It's also still refreshing to spend time with friends that are usually just too far away from you. FOSDEM is just maybe too subject-wide and not a lot of the talks grabbed my attention. As a comparison, GUADEC talks were a far lot more oriented to my fields of interest.

That conference was also the opportunity for Ali and I to share a bit about the project we're working on, People. People is an unified address book management framework and I'll blog about it very soon.

Tomorrow morning I fly back to Helsinki and try to begin well my second week there. The real difficult thing is to keep myself alive (i.e. feeding and basic other things like that) but I enjoy the freedom I have there and all the free time I can use (to hack a lot on People, eventually).

The busyness of the FOSDEM is still here, probably a slower start due to Sunday morning (arrived at 09.00 for the Mozilla DevRoom Extensions Workshop, with only a few people but started filling up quickly).

I'm currently listening to Toshiharu Harada, a very nice chap from Japan discussing a secure Linux distribution.

What I got was a lively bunch of free software and open source 'enthusiasts' (ok, hackers and geeks really), going in these lecture rooms. Tables on the corridors are populated by most well-known software projects, such various Linux distros, Mozilla, PostgreSQL, and others. The university settings of ULB gave it that extra touch of casual but studious atmosphere. I would guesstimate the attendace to be in the lower thousands.

As I am not due to present until tomorrow, I roam around a bit, and currently listening to the embedded power management session. As the whole place where FOSDEM is wired with wifi (meaning to provide wifi they run wires everywhere!), everyone is whipping out their laptops, smartphone, Nokia N810, Asus Eee and other devices, and probably doing three things at once.

All in all, if you are interested in free and open source software programming, this is the right place to be.

I'll go to FOSDEM this weekend (where the former President of the FFII will be speaking), and hopefully see Richard Stallman come here next Tuesday.

Next week is the BRM for OOXML, and I wouldn't want to be in Alex Brown's shoes. Maybe the meeting itself won't be so dramatic - no press allowed there, for one thing - but it'll be interesting to see just how much bullying ISO national bodies are going to take from Microsoft, I mean ECMA. Basically, the strategy has changed from "OOXML is a perfect standard, and there isn't even as much as a spelling error" to "look, since we're good guys, we'll include your idea too - now there are at least two ways to do everything". To use a car analogy (sorry):

You: This car is not working, the engine is broken.
ECMA: How do you know? Let's give it some time.
You: It is broken, alright.
ECMA: OK, look. We added a new one.
You: Doesn't work.
ECMA: Yes it does. Start both engines.
You: I told you, the old one is broken. Why didn't you just fix it?
ECMA: Come on, one of them is new, isn't it great!

All that is missing is a press release from SCO that endorses OOXML. (Oh, is it flying pig season again? The fine company that made up random lawsuits about Linux, then went through bankruptcy proceedings, is now getting $100 million in support. Maybe I have been focused on the wrong career?)

Tym razem samolot z Okęcia wyleciał o czasie (a nie trzy godziny później, jak rok temu). Ale kiedy lądował w Brukseli, pani stewardessa (całkiem fajna nawet ;-))  powiedziała, że "there's apparently a security alert" i że będziemy czekać długo na bagaże.

No i faktycznie, było bombowo.  Dwie godziny siedzenia na podłodze terminalu, przed kontrolą paszportową, w coraz gęstszym tłumie. A potem problemy z odnalezieniem bagażu, bo przecież nie każdy wpadłby na to, że bagaże z Warszawy będą na karuzeli podpisanej "Rome"...

Wskutek alarmu pojawiłem się w hotelu trochę później niż planowałem. Ale od tego momentu było już fajnie. :)

Z hotelu gandalf i staszyna wyciągnęli mnie do Roy d'Espagne na "Zdarzenie piwne", gdzie spotkaliśmy Adrianera oraz Pike'a, MMx-a, dm8tbra i paru innych (nie tylko niemieckich) mozillowców. W "Royu" piwo było dobre. :)  Później przenieśliśmy się do koszmarnie zatłoczonego pubu o nazwie Delirium Tremens, tu pierwsze piwo było OK, a drugie nie za bardzo... Zabrałem się stamtąd dość wcześnie razem z Niemcami i Adrianerem, gandalf i Staszek zostali dłużej w towarzystwie m. in. Andy'ego z Flocka...

W sobotę zaczął się właściwy FOSDEM - od przemówienia Pietera Hintjensa z FFII na temat patentów. Następnie Jim Gettys omówił i zademonstrował OLPC.  Laptopik robi wrażenie, muszę przyznać. No i sam pomysł takiego wspierania edukacji dzieciaków w biednych krajach niesamowicie mi się podoba.

Później był dynamiczny w formie wykład ludzi z Suna na temat uwolnienia Javy, na którym także ogłoszono, że Sun stał się patronem FSF.

Przenieśliśmy się potem do pokoju Mozilli, gdzie po powitalnej mowie Pike'a Mike Schroepfer omówił dokonania Mozilla Corporation w ciągu ostatniego roku.  Następna była prelekcja gandalfa na temat europejskich społeczności. Ożywiona dyskusja spowodowana kontrowersyjnością niektórych tez sprawiła, że nie starczyło mu czasu, by przedstawić wszystko, co pierwotnie planował. Szkoda, bo zapowiadało się ciekawie. :)

Później KaiRo omówił SeaMonkey i suiterunnera, zapewniając też, że rozszerzenia pisane dla Thunderbirda powinny bezproblemowo chodzić pod nowym "Kurierem poczty," wymagając praktycznie tylko dodatkowego wpisu w install.rdf.

Kolejnym punktem programu był Manifest Mozilli, przedstawiony przez Gerva. Opinie były różne - jedni uważali, że manifest za bardzo skupia się na dzisiejszych produktach, inni, że powinien być bardziej otwarty na inne projekty, a część widowni zdawała się w niemy sposób pytać: "ale o co chodzi?". :)

Dalej był BOF, czyli pogadanki każdego z każdym na każdy temat. Wieczór zakończyła sponsorowana przez Mozilla Europe kolacja w Grand Cafe.

W niedzielę przespaliśmy w hotelu wykład na temat AllPeers, pojawiając się na FOSDEM-ie dopiero na prelekcji Patricka Brunschwiga o tworzeniu rozszerzeń dla Thunderbirda, która tak naprawdę dotyczyła głównie Enigmaila. Kolejny wykład zatytułowany "QA of XULRunner-based applications" był niezłą pokazówką możliwości Joosta, internetowej platformy telewizyjnej, której klient opiera się właśnie na XULRunnerze. Muszę przyznać, fajna sprawa. :)

Następnie w sali Chavanne Mike Schroepfer miał wykład dla osób spoza ścisłej społeczności mozillowej, w którym przedstawił historię Firefoksa oraz nowe możliwości JavaScriptu 1.7 oraz trybu offline w aplikacjach webowych wraz z tzw. client-side storage. Parę słów poświęcił też JS 2. Ta prelekcja jest dostępna do pobrania w formacie OGG. :)

Jako że w sali Mozilli chwilowo się nic nie działo (większość udała się na lunch), poszedłem z Wadimem do sąsiedniej sali SUSE, gdzie akurat prezentowany był projekt ThinkFinger, czyli otwartego sterownika czytników linii papilarnych. W GDM przejeżdżasz paluchem po czytniku i logujesz się do Gnome'a czy innego KDE. Fajne. :)

Wróciliśmy do sali Mozilli, jako że rozpoczynał się blok prelekcji poświęconych lokalizacji. Pike omówił L20n (L10n 2.0), które jako wspólny projekt twórców Mozilli i gettexta może kiedyś zastąpić PO i mozillowe DTD/properties. L20n rozwiązuje wiele problemów obu starych formatów, fajnie by było więc, gdyby stało się wspólnym standardem w oprogramowaniu open source. Przyjdzie nam na to jeszcze jednak długo poczekać, bo to dopiero "proof of concept". Zapowiada się jednak nieźle (inaczej, niż mi się to pierwotnie wydawało).

Prelekcja Philippe'a z FrenchMozilla uświadomiła "dużej" Mozilli, jakie problemy są największą przeszkodą dla jej lokalizatorów. Później odbyła się moderowana przez Pike'a dyskusja na różne tematy okołolokalizacyjne.

Niedzielny wieczór spędziliśmy już bez Adrianera i Wadima. Najpierw kolacja, na którą poszliśmy w międzynarodowym towarzystwie (Mike Schroepfer, Mike Connor, Peter Van der Beken z żoną, Cedric Corazza, Pike, Andy Smith, Toni Hermoso Pulido i inni), a potem z częścią tego towarzystwa oraz z Zenem pozwiedzaliśmy brukselskie puby. :)

Teksty w języku polskim, jakich tamtego wieczoru gandalf uczył Andy'ego, lepiej pominąć milczeniem. :D

Ten FOSDEM zaliczam do udanych. Znów miałem okazję spotkać ludzi, którzy naprawdę zmieniają cyfrowy świat. Trochę żałuję, że nie udało mi się odwiedzić nic poza Mozillą i SUSE, bo i w innych salach działo się wiele...  No i jakoś dziwnie mało gadżetów wywiozłem w tym roku. Ale było naprawdę ciekawie, zarówno w części oficjalnej, jak i "piwnej". Myślę, że za rok będzie przynajmniej równie interesująco. :)

I saw quite interesting presentations compared to Saturday.

Sorry Frederic, but I missed most of your presentation, it was way to early for me :) However, I saw quite a lot of people were interested in Metisse : I went back to the cross-platform room several times and definitely your presentation had the biggest crowd of them.

I stayed for the "Strigi internals" presentation which was definitely the best I've seen during this FOSDEM 2007. Yes, it was a bit technical and my C++ skills are gone since a long time, but the presentation was more about the architecture rather than the code and I was very interested in it : this piece of code is really well designed ! Thanks to this architecture, Strigi is very fast, extensible via plugins, able to parse nested files (pdf inside zip inside email attachements) and lightweight... what do you want more ? I really would like to join development of strigi and see where I can help (maybe nowhere, I'll see...)

Then, I went to one of the shows of the FOSDEM : the presentation about metasploit exploit construction framework. The guy was really speaking too fast for me, but was incredibly dynamic and I've no doubt in his security nor development skills. He showed how to hack a vmware box thanks to a vmware exploit. Well... almost everyone was amazed by this but I already knew metasploit and this is really 0.1% of what this tool is able of (moreover, who wanna hack his own vmware virtual machine ? This exploit can't be lead against a real machine so it's a bit non-sense...). However, I enjoyed this presentation much and for ruby fans, wait for metasploit 3.X, you'll be surprised :)

Then, I went to the KDE room to use the Free Wi-Fi connection and read my mail. Yeah, I just enjoyed having a free Wifi connection, so many things are not free anymore these days...

In the afternoon I decided to join people in the hidden Mandriva room. This was first time I saw all of them. I met misc, pterjean, warly, nanar and several others. We spent most of the afternoon discussing packaging policies and Mandriva Club / Users / Contributors. Then, I had to get home at 17:00

I enjoyed very much this Sunday and will probably attend FOSDEM next year.

Yes, I'm here in Brussels at one of the biggest open source meeting in Europe ! Here's what I've done today :

• First conference about Patent Software status in Europe. The speaker had nothing to show, just talk. Well, that was not very entertaining and rather boring for me... Posters were distributed during this conference for a new website called www.ethipat.org about ethical patents (it has a broader range than www.ffii.org which is only about software patents) and I took one. Let's see where I can put it now... Probably at work
• The second conference was about One Laptop Per Child project. The good thing in that conference is that almost every aspect of the project was tackled in the presentation. It includes difficulties with governments, power management, mesh networks (which involves you turn Wifi on night and day). Unfortunately, Jim Gettys, the speaker, was a little too fast and sometimes didn't talk in details about interesting subjects. But he had to deal the whole subject in 45 minutes, which was not easy for him.
• I went to lunch and came back at the end of the presentation of ReactOS. I didn't know anything about this project except the name. Those crazy guys want to re-implement a 100% windows-compatible but 100% free operating system. The goal is to be able to run all windows applications under ReactOS. Their latest version 0.3 is still very buggy and slow, but is almost able to run mIRC and boot Windows NT. There was a funny question asking if they also implemented the blue screen of the death in ReactOS :) If they ever succeed, maybe one day, we'll have an operating system able to run windows programs as well as linux ones...
• Then, I went to the strigi presentation which was interesting and I asked a question about the beagle/strigi comparison. For the main two developers, there's no match : strigi is 10 times faster with 10 times less code :) For having tried both desktop search engines, I must admit they're right, but I still use beagle because of its user interface and because it's a more mature project, but I'd like to try strigi once again and maybe help them with, at least, debugging.
• I had time to see the end of LinuxBIOS presentation where I had the confirmation of what I read in the news : a new Gigabyte motherboard (shipped worldwide) is now using LinuxBIOS :) It's a 100% free BIOS which is also faster than other BIOSes in many ways. But if trying this BIOS involves flashing my BIOS, then I'll try when it's more mature... sorry guys
• Then, I've waited for Andrew Morton and his linux kernel presentation. Well, I was rather disappointed, new features were listed, but there was almost no discussion about them or you had to already know them in order to understand the speech. Once again, the presentation was not really entertaining with only text and no pictures, graphs nor demonstration of a particular concept. Well at least, I'm glad I've seen what Andrew looks like now.
• After getting some belgium fries near Janson auditorium, I went to several stands were I grabbed an openSuse CD, a firefox sticker, a google pin and had a presentation about XGL (which was rather a presentation of compiz : you can't do much with XGL alone...). I let the guy talk but I already knew everything about was he was telling me about because I use compiz every day :) I also kept quiet because my friends (windows users) were amazed by what the guy was presenting to them and then, I was very proud to tell them that I already had compiz preinstalled on my Mandriva 2007, running out of the box :)
• Finally, I went to "Gentoo's future" conference. It's always good to know what are distribution's plans. But there was no presentation at all, only talks between a good part of the Gentoo team and the public. Most of the discussions were about this or that particular Gentoo bug, but there's no real "bug plan" for Gentoo future, I'm afraid. Except maybe creating a new documentation portal which is in itself, a big project and gentoo documentation quality has always amazed me (but I've learnt it's becoming more and more outdated and developers nor technical writers have no time to refresh it). The room was overcrowded and when the speaker said "who is using Gentoo here ?", I was amazed I was almost the only one not raising my hand. So it looks like Gentoo has a very supportive community and people using Gentoo comes to conference to see developers which is very good. I'm afraid we won't have the same effect with Mandriva... see below

So here's what I've done today. I have to admit that most of the conferences' content was not what I expected and I was generally disappointed with the presentations. However, I found out the small rooms have a more friendly atmosphere (like strigi and gentoo ones) and I think I'll spend more times going to such rooms tomorrow.

One last thing : "where is Mandriva ?", you might ask. That's the most interesting part : Mandriva is here, but in a secret room... Only a small group knows about it, it's advertised nowhere and not open to the public... Come on... I hope you'll do a better job next year, book a room and prepare something interesting for the public, otherwise, you'll quickly loose your community, I'm afraid. Gentoo room was full of people supporting Gentoo and which actually helped (testers, technical writers, users in specific environments, ...), it was a real community. Why would Mandriva not be able to achieve the same "community effect" ? Oh, because I think people reading my blog are probably not part of "the public" but are generally Mandriva supporters, I think I can tell you the room where Mandriva guys are : it’s room number H3228. To go there, follow the “toilets” sign (or infodesk, it’s almost the same direction) : you’ll pass in front of the CentOS stand. Then, turn left as if you’d go to the toilets, but turn left again to climb up the stairs. Once you’re upstairs, be careful not to turn left (because, I found out there’s two room number H3228, but the correct one lies on the right). So turn right and you’ll notice a “Mandriva” sign on one of the doors. I’ll try to be there in the afternoon. So maybe see you there ! :)

Członków zespołu Aviary.pl będzie można najłatwiej znaleźć w weekend w pokojach Mozilli i openSUSE, choć raczej głównie w tym pierwszym, jako że praktycznie pół niedzieli poświęcone będzie kwestiom lokalizacji.

Wśród dziesiątek interesujących prelekcji jedną poprowadzi Zbigniew "gandalf" Braniecki: "Europejskie społeczności Mozilli".  A z prelekcji z głównej ścieżki najciekawiej zapowiada się chyba ta o inicjatywie One Laptop Per Child, choć i o wyzwalaniu Javy warto będzie posłuchać.

Patrząc na całościową rozpiskę, aż chciałoby się rozdwoić... ;-)
