Delightfully sung.

One of the most poncey albums of the year comes to you with compliments from Eno and Byrne. It's a little bit airy fairy for my liking, but all the while, I find very little to insult in this album. I don't know if it's hypnotising me while I'm listening to it, but I find my attention drifing away while this album is on.
The whole album makes me slightly uncomfortable, I know that there's so much that I don't like about the album, but somehow it shouts "LOOK OVER THERE!" and points behind me every time I'm close to pinpointing the exact thing that I disslike.

It's beautifully composed, there's some lovely singing on here, there's a good mix of really soft and relaxing music, and some slightly less soft and relaxing music, to add some kind of contrast in there. The style is very minimal without being empty, the music is inoffensive without being boring.

This album is like one of those pictures where it's a jar, but also two faces. It's very deceptive and is desperately changing from one thing to another.

"Strange Overtones"

A word of caution. The songs on this split release have an ethereal quality that is so delicately beautiful that when you listen you find yourself in a state of child-like awe at even the simplest things you come into contact with. Both bands made these songs at home and within their subtle intricacies you can sense that making music, for them, is a real labour of love. 

Parachutes.

I guess there won't be an article about Parachutes that doesn't mention Sigur Ros. Its the easiest way to grab your attention, at least until they have made a full length record on their own, and you are just interested in their music. As an introduction they offer the two songs on this split, mixed by none other than Jón Þór Birgisson (of Sigur Ros), and featuring the strings of Amiina. Either song would not sound out of place on a Sigur Ros record except for the fact that Parachutes sing in English. Let us not forget however that sounding like Sigur Ros is no mean feat. I would offer that it is in fact high praise, many bands have have tried and failed to capture the warmth and depth of feeling that they create.

On this evidence Parachutes ethereal ambient pop music inspires daydreams and gentle epiphanies wherever you are and whatever the circumstance. Expect big things in the future.

Band in Box.

I'll readily admit that I knew nothing of Band in Box until I flipped over the record, dropped the needle and was overcome with layers of beautiful voices, it was like opening the curtains to a bright summers day. As those opening throes subside they give way to the sound of lovely folktronica filled with intricate little studio tricks and poignant lyrical imagery. All three of the Band in Box songs root themselves somewhere deeper inside than you'd expect. Music of this genre can often feel somewhat throwaway and emotionally detached but here its not the case. "Lost and Foundland" imparticularly hit me hard in the heart. Band in Box evokes the kind of thoughts that resonate inside of me long after the needle has lifted. 

Band in Box are my favourite type of surprise.

El canadiense Mike Milosh ha sacado su tercer disco bajo el originalísimo título de III. Se lo vamos a perdonar al chico porque seguramente con haberlo parido tuvo ya bastante. Porque hay que reconocerle que está muy bien y que al menos se ha abstenido bastante de cagarla a lo grande. III es de estos discos delicados que ante todo intentan sonar cálidos y dulces con funda de terciopelo y que por lo general suelen provocar más de una subida de azúcar y diarreas varias. Vamos, que estoy hablando de ese sonido pop o folktronico empalagoso a más no poder y que, por unas razones u otras se me suele atragantar en la primera escucha. Pero parece que Mike se cruzó con Josh Eustis, uno de los miembros de Telefon Tel Aviv, un tipo que posee una forma particular de entender la música a base clicks y sonidos raros que más que molestar suelen engrandecer cualquier cosa que circula por su mente. La mano de Josh se deja notar bastante, tal que Remember The Good Things recuerda gratamente a aquel famoso I Lied de TTA. Tampoco le vamos a quitar méritos al amigo Mike, ya que su voz casi andrógina y metálica se ajusta a la perfección a toda la mezcla con un resultado muy, pero que muy bueno. Así que lo que podría haber sido otro disco más melosillo de calidad normalita se convierte en una mezcla de IDM con folktronica bastante brillante que incita reescuchar algunos temas más de una vez.

Anyway- down to the music. They do have some good tunes- there are some lovely harmonies and melodies on Dot Dot Dot, One Thousand Faces and especially Pairadice which is the standout one for me. Quite a few of the tracks are just a bit too bluesy though for my liking but still worth checking out the others for the type of folktronica that they do.

You can download the track Pairadice from RcrdLbl or you can stream the first couple of minutes of some of the tunes over at CdBaby or the first few seconds of all the tunes at Amazon where you can buy it as well. Unfortunately CdBaby is out of stock which is a shame since they are one of the few that will ship internationally.

Couldn't Lose Myself If I Tried and Wish I Could Fly

Ever had the feeling of coming to a party a little too late? That's the exact same feeling I get when I listen to this album. It was released in 2006 and only now in late 2008, do I have it here with me.

The first time I heard of anything from Tunng was on a free promo disc from Spunk Records. I remember the promo disc well as that's where I also first heard of Mates of State. I don't recall what album I picked up had this promo disc attached. What was unfortunate was that Mates of State was the first song on that CD and I immediately fell in love with it and cared not to listen to the rest of the thing for only another year or two. Definite mistake as there is plenty of killer tracks on it, including Woodcat, by Tunng.

The best way to describe what they sound like, is the portmanteau oft used with them: Folktronica. A blend of folk with electronica. The lyrics I've read, are a lot smarter than I'm willing to go into; Jenny Again, one of the songs in this album, is a particular tale actually worth sitting down and paying attention to. This is more a design flaw of how I approach my music, but usually I spend more time listening to the tune than the lyrics because I can't be buggered to think about the music. I just listen for the flow of it.

In a way, that is probably why I enjoy this album so much. The ability for me to just sit back, turn my brain off, listen to the strangely hypnotic vocals and pass out. And I know, if I wanted to go deeper with the album, slowly listening for each verse, it would all weave a tale.

What do I suggest? pop into their website, step into the audio section, download Woodcat, and see why I like them so much. If that fails, they've got a multitude of links to other songs that you can give a listen. I'm gonna go pass out now.

Released in 2003, Rounds presents a palette of sounds designed to satisfy the experimental music lovers out there, but yet not entirely alienating the occasional listener.

Experimental music is a niche genre, and its often perceived as just noise to non-listeners. However, Four Tet has managed to package and deliver songs that, in their entirety, seem palatable to people outside of this niche circle. Combining glitchy, staccato samples with twinkly-toe melodies, this album can be viewed as an entry album for people who are starting out in this genre.

She Moves She brings to us a driving breakbeat rhythm coupled with sitar-like sounds and twinkly melodies, punctuated with glitches that play out in sync. The simple breakdown allows us a breather amidst the organised mess of sonic pleasure.

The key track, My Angel Rocks Back And Forth, features a pump-like sound as its basic rhythm. I've read that the percussion resembles that of an iron lung pump, and I couldn't describe it any better. The main melody is simple and sweet, with a child-like innocence to it. Emanating a melancholic feel, it is hard not to associate somewhat bleak images to this song. Perhaps an elderly in his/her last moments, thinking about the good old days? Or, deriving from the iron lung description, a child who has to spend the rest of his/her life in an iron lung? The latter image has stuck with me, as the title's reference of an angel rocking back and forth could very well be the iron lung's pump working tirelessly to sustain this child's fragile state. Nevertheless, this track is depressingly beautiful.

Spirit Fingers is a frantic, fast-paced number that features guitar sounds meshed together with distant bells sounding off in the background, while Unspoken is an almost-10mins long downtempo track that will definitely leave everyone feeling all relaxed after a long day at work. As Serious As Your Life adds some spice through the means of a funky sounding guitar riff, and a distorted drum rhythm section as the track progresses, while Slow Jam closes the album in an uplifting, feel-good fashion, with a rubber duckie sample to boot!

While I believe that everyone perceives songs differently, I honestly believe this album can provide listeners with the power of introspection through its music. Take a step back. Have some time to yourself, put those earphones on, and confront those doubts, those what-ifs, that you've pushed way back into your mind.

Stumbled upon this morbidly beautiful video on YouTube, set to the enchanting melodies of Four Tet's My Angel Rocks Back And Forth. We remain puzzled as to what the video exactly means, but we interpret it as the journey after one's death, in a dark, fantasy-like manner.

I did listen to some of their previous work and I think that Good Arrows has a more cohesive sound- more vocals and less experimentation which just make them utterly compelling. You can go to their official site and get some tracks from their Download/Audio section and you can also get a few things from their label Full Time Hobby (under Media).

I also came across a brilliant set of theirs in a record shop called Amoeba in California. Amoeba actually have a few shops and they do live shows in each- the quality of some is quite good and you get some good shots of the band. The guy who edited the Tunng's set certainly had a liking for Becky Jacobs since she is on screen the majority of time- not a bad thing I must say. You can also see some of the toys that they use for the sounds...they aren't just mixed in as I had thought!

Il giorno 6 marzo 2008 al circolo degli artisti di Roma si è tenuto il concerto dei Tunng, gruppo britannico appartenente alla corrente folktronica.

Il concerto si apre con l’esibizione di un gruppo spalla formato da basso, chitarra/voce, e tastiera/sintetizzatore, il tutto coordinato da una base di batteria prodotta da quest’ultimo.

I Monoma, (questo è il nome del trio romano),eseguono solo tre pezzi, e tanto basta per capire il genere e le influenze del trio.

Il loro genere appartiene al ramo “rock elettronico” (tipo radio head  -per intenderci- ).

I pezzi fanno ampio uso di riff elettronici, e l’unico strumento con continuità musicale è il basso elettrico, dato che le parti della chitarra elettrica e della tastiera sono poco rilevanti.

L’effetto che si ottiene è “poco chiaro” ai fini musicali;

dato che la parte strumentale è quasi del tutto assente e la parte vocale è fin troppo sporcata da chorus e flanger vocali.

Dopo l’esibizione dei Monoma salgono sul palco i veri guest  della serata: i Tunng.

Il gruppo britannico propone una miscela di folk acustico ed elettronica che riesce a sintetizzare con incredibile originalità due fra le più interessanti correnti musicali.
Alla base di questo gruppo, sta l’unione (riuscitissima!!     ^^) tra Folk e Elettronica. 

La struttura dei brani rimane folk sporcata con inserti elettronici, ma il tutto appare più compiuto e ancorato ad una forma canzone più pop.

Dominano la chitarra e il piano ma diffuso è l’uso di strumenti come l’arpa, oltre ovviamente a effetti, campionamenti, mai troppo invadenti, e ad oggetti improbabili come la sirena di un’ambulanza.

L’originalità dei Tunng rimane dunque la capacità di unire tecnologia e essenzialità, passato e presente nei loro pezzi folktronici.
