getQualifiedClassName and getDefinitionByName both in the flash.utils package.

So I wanted to tell Flex to create a button without coding a 'new mx.controls.Button', so how is this done? Well with reflection.

Lets take a look at the Create method below. It takes an undefined data type, a string, two integers and two optional integers. The last four parameter are obvious so I will talk about the first one, objClass. This is where you tell Flex what kind of object to create, you pass in the class name like Button, List, etc and Flex will get the class name from the object, create a reference to it and then create an instance of that reference. Then it will return the object so you can use it, set data, add events, etc.

Currently running the reports in Moodle has proven to be a real pain. We have several groups and many users in each group. To get around the problem of generating a report for all the users and their grades, we built a 'Dashboard' using Flex 3 and PHP.

Basically the Dashboard provides an easy way to view and manage all the Users, Courses and Grades currently in Moodle. It allows you to select a Group, and then view all the Users in that Group, with all their courses and the Grades for each Course. Our Courses are built in Authorware and have a single Grade. The results of the query are displayed in a Datagrid, and you have the option of either printing the grid or exporting it to Excel. The latter proving to be the more popular choice.

We hope in the weeks to come to include more functionality in the Dashboard that will allow you to create Users and also assign users to Groups and Courses. Who knows, maybe this could be the start of a Flex based LMS.... We'll see

Glad to hear you think that too. I think that as we share what we learn, all of us will benefit. One thing, though: this project is about a Flex client to Google App Engine. Not necessarily about Cairngorm. I will probably go the way of PureMVC. No problem for Cairngorm users, anyway, because the project is about the client-server integration, not about the framework for the Flex client.

I got your project running, there’s only one thing I do not understand just yet.

You have 2 folders “server” and “python-client”. They contain each pyamf in its whole? Is that necsessary?
It would help me and others much if you could explain why they are splitup in 2 seperate folders.

I agree that is a waste. Space is cheap, though. My reasoning is that I want my "server" directory to contain only what must be running at Google App Engine. No client tools at all. That is, I want a self-contained web service on GAE, and nothing else.

Since I also wanted a Python client to be able to test PyAMF in a way that is independent of Flex, that led me to create a "python-client" directory. I put a separate copy of PyAMF there so both subprojects (Python server and client) would be independent and self-contained, with no external dependencies.

And how the client.py knows of ProjectService.py and EchoService.py I don’t seem to get how they are linked up?

Well, first about the server. It does not know about any client. It only knows about requests that come through PyAMF.

About the clients, both (Python and Flex) are bound to the server in a naïve way that is suitable only for a test project. They use a fixed URL to the server (http://localhost:8080/) and they use the name of two services (EchoService and ProjectService) that are routed inside main.py in the server to the actual implementation classes.

Because I only start up “dev_appserver.py server”? And then openup the flex app.

You can start only one instance of the server on port 8080 and have both the Python and the Flex client talking to it.

I hope that clarifies a bit. Feel free to ask if you have more questions. Just keep in mind that I am still learning all this.

Incorporating Flash inside PDF document is very easy, in few steps you insert it into document and later easily access it through Javascript integration... Only thing that doesn't seem natural is not naming a SWF file you import so you don't access your flash by name but by number which seems little odd... This should be more likely to HTML page where you name your Flash file and then access it by name.

Great side is easy integration of Acrobat code inside Flex or Flash application, you can pass code from Flex/Flash you want Acrobat to execute, that is easy and important for all dialogs, scrolling and so on. Integration with web is natural, and works perfectly within document.

Adobe also introduces in Acrobat new feature PDF Portfolio which lets you create interactive document using a built in Flex application (this depicts Flash as a platform), throught the series of wizards and tools.

News reports logging the negative impact of the current budget crisis in California are quite disturbing to read.

While politicians like Arnold Schwarzenegger loll around on their fat a** - smoking foot long cigars and plotting on how to "best" their enemies in Sacramento over the issues - the lower classes are forced to suffer.

For example, pending the approval of a budget, it has been announced that funding for Medi-Cal clinics have been suspended. Of course - this means that the poor and disadvantaged in the State - may be without health care until the "deadlock" is freed up.

In addition, agencies that provide services for the disabled (which are funded one hundred percent by the State) may face life-threatening hardships, too.

I expect that home-owners and renters - who rely on a tax credit about this time each year - will also be shut out in the cold (no checks will be issued) until that "girly man" in the State Capitol gets his act together.

Arnold, you lack leadership skills!

So here i come up with a solution, i created a custom Container which extends Canvas container. It accepts the Embedded image (1Px) class reference as well as repeat direction. The custom container works on the Graphics API using beginBitMapFill methods.

First embed the image(1 px) in your application and create ImageRepeatCanvas and assign the properties;
