AC Schnitzer Concept Bike HP2 Superbike

Immediately after the launch of the HP2 Enduro by BMW, it was clear that this machine presented a new challenge to the AC Schnitzer engineers. The challenge was to make a very special Superbike out of the HP2. With the collaboration of our two partners WP Suspension and Dunlop however we've achieved success..

The details:
For fast acceleration on the road and track, safe braking is essential - so the second front brake was an important part in the engineers' specifications. The fully adjustable upside-down fork from WP Suspension with diameter 50mm brings sufficient rigidity and provides a mounting for the 2nd brake. The 4-piston callipers of the R 1100 S BoxerCup Replica are fitted with adapters and grip the corresponding 320 mm diameter brake discs. They are activated with a 17mm radial pump from PHOENIX, which is matched by the 16mm radial clutch pump.
The rearward view is provided by mirrors with milled arms from AC Schnitzer.
To balance the front wheel guide, the rear spring strut is replaced by a fully adjustable WP Suspension spring strut with higher spring rate.

The HP2 now runs on V-Performance wheels by AC Schnitzer in sizes 3.5 & 5.5 x 17. Dunlop Sportmax GP Racer tyres in sizes 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17 provide the necessary grip. Extra power was found in the exhaust system. The high performance manifold without catalyst by AC Schnitzer together with the AC Schnitzer titanium rear silencer brings the power to an impressive 111.3 HP at 7500 rpm. Without the dB killer, the power would be an awesome 112.5 HP. The torque is 120 Nm at 5550 rpm.

After the extensive conversion, the ready-to-ride weight is 190 kg, with the axle distribution precisely 50% front and rear.

[For design reasons, in pure Superbike mode a Boxer Enduro is naturally at a slight disadvantage in comparison with a specifically designed machine with a different engine concept. But the AC Schnitzer HP2 handles as well as a Go-Kart on tight corners. There it reveals potential of a level previously reserved for competition. The powerful engine, excellent suspension by WP Suspension and grippy Dunlop tyres provide pure riding pleasure at the highest level.

The AC Schnitzer HP2 is only available as a Concept Bike in this form.

At present a conversion kit is being tested for use on public roads. This will consist of the V-Performance wheels size 17", a second brake with adapter for the standard fork, the characteristic AC Schnitzer rear silencer and the high performance manifold.

The following will be the first of five installments of my “Why I Love The Office” serie

The following will be the first of five installments of my "Why I Love The Office" series. I do realize that this only serves to out me as a crazy addicted freak. But so be it. My love will not be denied.

I love Jim Halpert and the ever-lovely JAM relationship. I love Dwight's innocent extremism and Michael's inability to keep his mouth shut. I love the cast and the DVD Blooper Reels. I love my Fun Run tee-shirt and my Dwight Bobblehead and my Office themed notepads. I love saying "that's what she said" and making Jim faces. I love Thursday nights and Friday post-episode discussion. I love so much about what this show chooses to be.

But maybe I need to start at the beginning. Back when this love was just a little crush that grew into something so much more...

It started in January of 2006. The scene: just another boring Thursday night, mindlessly surfing the channels for something to watch when the fates or destiny or whatever landed me on NBC in the middle of a brand new episode of The Office. I recognized Steve Carell from his new-found 40 Year Old Virgin fame and decided "what the heck?" Twenty-minutes later I was completely hooked.

It was the Booze Cruise episode, one of my favorites to date for the simple reason that it contains all the elements that I believe make this show great. A painfully beautiful and honest Jim/Pam moment, hilarious interaction between the entire office staff and a rare moment of insight from bumbling boss Michael.

And so we come to Reason 1:

After this first viewing of The Booze Cruise I was instantly sucked into the drama that is JAM, the would be celebrity name for the relationship between salesman Jim Halpert and receptionist Pam Beesly. Back in Season Two, she was of course still married to Roy and I have to say, John Krasinski is a complete genius at the way he completely nailed the pain with which Jim was constantly afflicted in the face of this unrequited love.

The Booze Cruise features one of my favorite moments from the series and actually one of my favorite television moments of all time. Where so many shows would have shown a long speech or lots of talking and wise cracks and witty banter, The Office went with something different... silence.

Jim and Pam are standing there on this boat and she's engaged to another man and they're stuck there with their co-workers but the lights in the horizon are beautiful and for about a half a minute they're just looking at each other, both fighting to say something or do something. In the end of course Jim remains silent and Pam walks away. It's painful and it's awkward and it's so real.

I remember being awestruck in that moment, completely riveted to my television screen. Obviously I would have to continue watching this show. I found myself tuning in anxiously every Thursday night just to see what would happen with these two. Would Jim FINALLY tell her how much he loved her? Would Pam finally break it off with her obviously-wrong-for-her fiance Roy?

And slowly but surely I began to fall for Jim Halpert: The Lloyd Dobler of our generation. At first I didn't really think much of him. Yeah, he was kind of cute in that dorky/goofy way. But nothing special. And then... before I knew it, I was smitten. Damn John Krasinski and those Office writers for creating this character.

He's attractive in the way he loves Pam. He's attractive in his humor and they way he is simultaneously irritated and protective of his co-workers. He is attractive in his shaggy hair and lanky height and adorable puppy dog eyes. And after seeing the look on his face after Roy announced the date for the wedding on the Booze Cruise, all I wanted to do was scoop him up and give him a hug.

And then of course came the Season Two finale Casino Night when those words finally slipped from his mouth.

"I'm in love with you."

Pam's face went white. I shrieked at my television and then basically watched the last ten minutes with my hands clasped tightly over my cheeks. That single tear that slipped down his cheek, the way he just grabbed Pam and kissed her, the way her hands when so instinctively to his hair... Gah. And then of course I was forced to spend the next three months wondering what would happen.

So why? Why does this relationship affect me so much? Why do I feel that it is just so absolutely imperative that they get together? I guess in large part it has to to with the incredible acting talents of Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski. They've really brought these characters to life in a way that transcends the normal bounds of comedic sitcoms. Yes, I realize that Jim and Pam are fictional characters but for a half an hour every Thursday night they are very real. They are real in the way that Jim looks at Pam, in Pam's tears, in their flaws, in the crazy chemistry that just oozes off the screen when they're together. These are two characters who live boring lives at a paper company and you so badly root for them to find happiness with each other, to find something to make life a little more extraordinary.

And now, several seasons later, Jim and Pam are finally together and throughout the fourth season we have seen them happy. Several critics have argued that the show would suffer once they got together but I don't see this happening. The writers have done a very good job at striking this even balance between the JAM storyline and the rest of the cast of characters. To see the ways in which they are so in sync, to watch the way their relationship has grown, to see them finally happy - this is all very interesting to me. And the show has never been solely about them so the show doesn't suffer from losing that aspect of drama.

I was a longtime watcher of Friends and I loved the Ross and Rachel relationship but after ten seasons the whole break up/make-up/break up/make-up/break up thing got old. After awhile you being to wonder if those two people should actually be together. One of my most fervent hopes for the show is that the writers of The Office don't go that route with Jim and Pam.

In Season Three we had to deal with the whole Karen-drama and yes it was annoying and yes it might seem contrived that JIm went away and came back with another beautiful woman at just the time that Pam is finally ready for him. But here's the thing, I do believe that that year apart was important for these two characters.

Yes, I think about this too much.

But this is a largely character driven show and I love noting the ways in which character flaws and motivations move the story-lines. And while I love Jim Halpert, I feel a special affinity with the character of Pam. She's stuck at a job she doesn't want, she's been with the same guy for ten years, she works for an idiot, she lets people walk all over her and her life isn't going anywhere. So when she and Roy do end their relationship and she's finally by herself for the first time ever, she has to find a way to re-define her life. Unfortunately, it took an excruciating full season length in which we had to witness her crying in the hallway and Jim's uncomfortable relationship with Karen and the utter dissolution of the Jim/Pam friendship. But Pam needs this time to find her way and eventually it happens. After a season of tears and ups and downs, she finally summons up the courage, runs across the hot coals and declares her feelings to all her co-workers.

This of course led the the awesome Season Three ending of "then it's a date."

Whoo! I cannot tell you how excited I was that those two crazy kids were going to actually make it work. And so far, so good. In a few weeks Season Five will begin and we'll see how they coped over the summer.

I'm predicting good things.

So yes, I've put much too much thought into these fictional characters. And maybe it's just a sign that my own life is WAY too boring. But there you go, I love Jim and Pam. So sue me.... No, wait don't. I have nothing. Well... except for the Dwight Bobblehead. And I'm guarding that with my life.

For more on my love of The Office, stay tuned for Part Two in my "Why I Love The Office" Series in which I explore the inner workings of the mind of Michael Scott.

But many other jobs of my ancestors no longer exist in the same way. Some of the factory jobs of my 20th Century ancestors, such as the Pater family who all worked in clothing factories as weavers, still exist - but you won't find the industry as prevalent in the United States as it was when they were working. Many of the other occupations of my ancestors have become outdated with modern times. For example, one of my 5th great-grandfathers, Franciszek Świerczyński of Mszczonów, Poland, was a carriage-maker in the 1800's. Since carriages have been replaced by cars, I imagine that he'd be in another line of work today.

I have shoemakers on both sides of my family. My 4th great-grandfather, Ignacy Pluta (1821-?) from Mszczonów, Poland (he married the daughter of the carriage-maker), was one as was his father, Ludwik Pluta. In Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Bavaria, I have traced over six generations of shoemakers from my Echerer line. The first Echerer son to be something other than a shoemaker was Karl (1846-1880s), who took up the occupation of his mason great-grandfather instead. While we still need shoes today, their construction has changed. Some shoes today are still hand-crafted with leather, probably using the same methods my ancestors used. Most shoes are mass-produced, and it would be hard to make a living as a shoemaker today unless you were a factory worker.

The more you research your genealogy and the farther back you go, the more interesting occupations you'll find. Some will be "modern", like my innkeeper ancestor. Others, like the glassmaker, still exist but today the job is more of a "craftsman" trade or art that is more specialized. Again, modern machinery makes many of the things our ancestors once made by hand.

One of the more unique occupations in my family history is that of my 3rd great-grandfather, Franz Xaver Fischer (1813-?) from Agelsberg in Bavaria. He was listed as a söldner, which translates as mercenary. Mercenary? I was intrigued and pictured a soldier of fortune, hired out to neighboring countries. Until I learned the Bavarian meaning of the word... A sölde is a small house with a garden. For tax purposes, there were different designations for farmers. A bauer owned a whole farm, a Halbbauer owned half, and a Viertelbauer owned a quarter. Then there was the söldner, who owned either 1/8, 1/16, or 1/32 of a farm. My mercenary was a poor farmer! Well, not too poor - there was a further designation called häusler - they owned a house, but not the land.

Let's salute all of our hard-working ancestors today. I wonder what they'd think about some of today's job titles. "A program manager? What the heck is that?"

I almost didn't get to Prom 25. Last minute developments at work and my tendency to cram as much in as I possibly can prevented from me shutting down my laptop as promptly as I had originally planned.

Despite that I did succeed in getting my spot at the back of the arena just in time to see conductor Yakov Kreizberg take to the stage and whip the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra into a small frenzy.

If the Stockhausen gigs were an unexpected pleasure then so too was tonight's rendition of Dvorak's 6th symphony. I'd not heard it before but I knew it would be repertoire I'd feel comfortable with. Would I end up not really concentrating? Would it all wash over me? Would any old romantic mush leave me feeling sated? Well. Yes. Possibly, but not necessarily.

The strings were lush, the woodwind warm and precise. The brass did what all brass sections should do, keeping quiet when they had to and struck fear into the audience when directed to do so. Everyone did very well indeed. This bunch were very good. And, most important of all, they all smiled when we clapped. It's so nice when they smile. We like it when they smile.

It was the Brahms Violin Concerto which truly blew me away. Soloist Julia Fischer was a distant figure from where I was stood at the back of the arena ,and yet it was obvious to even the most short-sighted of prommers that she was totally in control of her performance. From what I could see, she knew exactly what she wanted. Hers was a spirited performance with a sweet tone, gripping right from the start. If you happen to see me with my headphones on tomorrow, you'll know what I'm listening to.

There were many moments which made me gasp, but the finest was undoubtedly at the end of the candenza in the first movement when the orchestra signalled the end of the soloists phrase with the quietest, most together, most agonisingly tightest placing of a chord I've heard in ages. Incredible. Loved it. Do it again. Please. Do it again.

In case you haven't realised, it's these evenings which make the hairs on the back of my neck (there are sufficient for me to be able to notice, but I'm no bear) stand up on end. Can't wait for the next one.
