It's a known issue that Peng and I would rather use Firefox 2 than Firefox 3 and we figured there were more of us that hadn't posted our displeasure online. There's now another person who has posted a less than glowing recommendation for Firefox 3.

Matt Hartley has posted his review on OSWeekly.com, and while he does mention some good things about Firefox 3, especially for Vista (and he has a fantastic recommendation for Vista fans), he has found an area where Firefox 3 has yet to give him reasons to leave his current browser, Flock: RSS, which still isn't as nice as Flock does RSS.

You can read his entire review on OSWeekly.com. And thanks for your comment on Peng's post, Matt. I'm liking the Bug as well. :)

The first Release Candidate is now going through the early stages of preparation in advance for it

The first Release Candidate is now going through the early stages of preparation in advance for it's release later this month, and when I do I'll be recommending a lot of you give it a try to see how it works for you.

It's no big secret that I'm not thrilled with Firefox 3 and it has a lot of changes from what you're used to in Firefox 2, but as long as you don't mind all of the changes they have in store you could love this newest breed of our favorite red panda.

For now you can keep an eye on the progress of the first Release Candidate on the wiki. I don't have a tentative release date for the RC, but we're looking at Firefox 3 being officially released next month. Once it comes out I'm going to recommend that as many of you as possible get it and check it out so you can help see if there's anything else that absolutely, positively ha to be fixed before it can be officially released.

I'd also recommend getting familiar with the process for transferring your information to a new profile since you really should have a new profile to use with Firefox 3. Even if you don't think you'll want to go back to Firefox 2 after trying Firefox 3, I'd have a new profile ready just to be on the safe side.

To be honest with you there's one thing I like better than Firefox 3, and even better than Firefox 2.

As the popularity of digital cameras increases, the quality of color photographs will be more closely scrutinized. For example; colors will have to be displayed the way there were meant to be, meaning, bright, rich and full of life.

I know that some photographers are disappointed with the quality of color pictures on the web. One of these photographers recently wrote in his personal blog, "One thing that has always irritated me about looking at pictures on the web is that browsers don’t seem to display photographs properly. And by 'photographs' I really mean 'colors'.

"I spend a lot of time tweaking pictures in Photoshop, but when I upload them to my Flickr account and look at them in Firefox 2 the colors aren’t the same — they’re more washed out, dull, and lifeless. It’s a subtle thing, but annoying nonetheless."

Fortunately there is a way to enhance the way colors look on your monitor. It's called "color management" or "color profile support".

Color Management is a standard technique defined by the International Color Consortium to ensure consistent color presentation for images no matter if they are displayed on paper, a computer monitor, an LCD TV set, fabric or any other media.

While image color improvement will not be as dramatic as I would like, the truth of the matter is, there will certainly be a difference. Let me explain myself. When you take a picture with your digital camera (specially in RAW format), it not only saves information about the colors, but also the amount of light available, distance and other factors that may affect how an image is perceived. This details are stored in a color profile which as of Firefox 2 is just ignored.

Firefox 2 does not include support for color profiles, so the browser renders colors as best it can without doing special tweaks based on your system or custom color profiles. The good news is that Firefox 3 does include full support for color profiles. In Firefox 3, these profiles are used to tune up the image to your display to better reproduce the original image; a must for amateur and professional photographers, clothing and fabric related e-stores, paint, food, and mostly everywhere a true representation of color is important.

The bad news is that color profile support will be turned off by default when Firefox 3 ships. To enable it you must set gfx.color_management.enabled to true (via about:config) and restart Firefox.

Another way to turn color profile support on is to install the Color Management add-on (which will work with Firefox 3 Beta 5). After you install the add-on and restart Firefox 3, color profile support is enabled, and you can specify a custom color profile by going to the Tools menu, selecting “Add-ons”, and clicking the Color Management add-on “Preferences” button. If you do not specify a color profile, the system default profile will be used, which should be OK for most people.

I’m elated that Firefox 3 has added support for color management technology. Over the years I’ve learned to appreciate photography; mainly by reading the blogs of my good friends, Abraham Lincoln and Don Ray. Having color management feature in my web browser will greatly enhance the enjoyment of viewing color photographs.

I have plans to get my feet wet with color photographs in a couple of months when I buy myself a digital camera. Right now I’m feeding my piggy bank.

The latest edition of Ubunut is using Firefox 3.0 as its default browser. Unfortunately Firefox 3.0 is still in beta testing. Firefox seems to be stable enough to run but experts at Thought Clump are finding that it's difficult to install Google Toolbar as an add-on. When trying to install Google Toolbar for the new Firefox 3.0 we get the following error message, "Google Toolbar for Firefox 3.0.20070525L could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.0b5."

That is Shift Linux, I made a crappy preview

http://player.stickam.com/flashVarMediaPlayer/179100486

That is Shift Linux, I made a crappy preview because I thought the trolls might want one, I'm sorry about Quality and my voice being shaky I was nervious haven't really made many videos, but I will be making more.

Basically to start off Shift Linux is made by the guys over at Neowin, it is based, built ontop of Ubuntu, allowing it to use any software that Ubuntu can use. It comes preinstalled with enough software for all your computer needs tho, the blue theme is just that a theme and is very easy to change, I really must say I like their version of firefox better than the real beta, which reminds me their firefox is version 3.5 beta, hopefully they will keep up with the beta's so we can have duel updates.

Coming with the regular games, blackjack, chess, and mines along with more, Shift made a shiftie move and dropped Open Office from the linux and adding abiword instead. On the disc it is slow if you want to just run it off of it, but installed on a pc it is blazing fast, faster than my friends mac. With themes already being made for this, the future is looking bright for the new linux on the block.

Stop by Neowin and give them a round of applause, what else? gDesklets thats what, given windows and mac both have widgets they have added that in now your Linux can have widgets too, I know it probably existed before, but coming preinstalled, never seen it. If I'm wrong comment and I'll fix this.

Heres a list from the site of stuff that comes with Shift Linux.

gDesklets - Eye Candy Widgets

GIMP - Image Editor

XSane - Image scanning program

gThumb - Image Viewer

xpdf - PDF Viewer

Pidgin - Internet Messsenger

GnomeMeeting - Internet Telephony

Gwget - Download Manager

Liferea - Feed Reader

XChat - IRC Client

gFTP - FTP Client

AbiWord - Word Processor

Gnumeric - Spreadsheet

Rhythmbox - Media Player

VLC - Multimedia Player

and much more.

I have a feeling I am not the only one who is wondering about this one. What will happen to all the current Firefox themes once Firefox 3 goes final? It seems like a handful of theme designers are having issues with getting their themes to look right with the new Firefox 3 interface. Will they all have to start from scratch again?

So should you or should you not be using Firefox 3 yet? I would say for 90% of the population or people using Firefox, no. You should at least wait for the release candidate versions or the final version. The fact of the mater is, even though Firefox 3 looks good it still is not done yet. The idea of bringing this topic up started after reading a post over at Cybernet News :

There is a lot of talking going around the Internet about Firefox 3 Beta being ready for mass usage. It’s because of an article by Reuters where the creators of Firefox supposedly told them that the Firefox 3 Beta is ready for everyone to use after months of being in development.

So I thought I would do what I can to help spread the words too about Firefox 3 being nice, pretty but not ready for prime time just yet. Just to give you an idea of how long you should wait - I haven’t even replaced Firefox 2 yet. Personally I’ll wait till it goes into the "release candidate" versions so that I can get ahead of the curve with some of your questions about it.

Also major "shame shame" on Reuters for not doing their homework on this.

I have never been one for doing a lot of news but I’ll wear the suit and tie any ways while writing this quick post. According to Wired's tech blog the final release of Firefox 3 is due in June of this year. This was disclosed to a roundtable discussion of tech bloggers (I wasn’t invited to!*) on Wednesday.

To give you a timeline to work with, right now we are at Firefox 3, beta 4. Firefox 3, beta 5 is expected to be released the first week of April (hopefully not on the 1st!). That should though be the last of the beta releases for Firefox 3.

In May we should be seeing the first release candidate hit the streets, and then most of the work will go into kicking extension developers in the pants to try to get them to officially update their code to work with Firefox 3.

Still haven’t seen many, but hope to see more. What am I concerned with? Classic Firefox 2 themes that we have all known and loved on Firefox 3. It is not secret that news about themes have dropped some here and elsewhere due to the change from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 but now it looks like Metal Lion is crossing the line.

Metal Lion - Andromeda gives Firefox 3 a classic sleek look, with your shinny blue icons. If the rest of you desktop is blue, this is the perfect fit for you. Ok, maybe I might be a little short on words for this design but it is a good one so lets let it speak for itself.

When it comes to tweaking some of the internals of Firefox, your average user won’t care that much - but for the graphic or photography nuts this next ‘bit of news should be exciting. It seems that the color profile support for Firefox 3 will be better. Although, the updated and upgraded is not enabled by default (due to resource issues) if you need it - it will be there.

This image above should give you a good idea of what you can look forward to once it is enabled. See how Firefox 3’s color representation and Photoshop are just about the same? I won’t lie, I am not as up on this color profile information as much as other may be so let me direct you to a great article that tackles this subject even deeper.

One thing that has always irritated me about looking at pictures on the web is that browsers don’t seem to display photographs properly. And by “photographs” I really mean “colors”. I spend a lot of time tweaking pictures in Photoshop, but when I upload them to my Flickr account and look at them in Firefox 2 the colors aren’t the same — they’re more washed out, dull, and lifeless. It’s a subtle thing, but annoying nonetheless.

You can check more out about Firefox 3’s color profile support and what to look forward to on Firefox 3: Color profile support (oh the pretty, pretty colors) (a great article by the way) via dria.org.

Rory is the BBC's technology correspondent and writes for the Beeb's tech blog dot.life.
so today i decided that i’d be content eating pomegranates for the rest of my life, and noth

so today i decided that i'd be content eating pomegranates for the rest of my life, and nothing but. i hadn't had a pomegranate in a while, and i came home and had one today. its just such a vibrant thing: i love it (don't worry i'll eat other stuff, i just need to start eating pomegranates more often).

i've found two fantastic blogs today that i just feel compelled to share. both different, yet both very appealing reads. one thing that i see similar between them is that both authors just have this indescribable feel to their writing. it just feels so human, i wish i could write at the level they do.

http://thenightblog.wordpress.com/

http://apricot-tea.com/

one thing that i've always looked for is a really interesting blog written by guy my age, unfortunately i haven't found one. i feel like there are a lot of girls in high school writing blogs, but not many boys. it's probably something with the whole macho complex stage i seemed to skip. it's also pretty frustrating that whenever i search for gay on the wordpress blog search i end up with cheep amateur porn :-\.

so one thing i realized today is that i've been in the same school district for ten. TEN years! my class actually isn't that big, roughly about 240 students. there are still people that i'm fascinated by, that i've never met, but really want to. plus other people in other grades. i think i need to stop limiting myself by the rules others have set out (the invisible web of lies and rumors that separates us all from one another). there are a bunch of people i would really love to get to know.

there's this one girl i was friendly with as a tot in elementary school, but lost touch with. now some people don't like her, but i find her fascinating. she's so nice, i'm so glad i've started to get to know her a bit more this year. she's not at all who i thought she was, or expected her to be. i love when that happens, when you realize that you've assigned certain things to someone, and they prove you wrong. i think we all do it sometimes, where we dismiss a person. i'm really trying to change how i approach meeting people, i think it makes all the difference going into something with an open mind.

anyways lets talk about what's in my dock!

the software that lives in my dock (i'll post later a list of other installed programs)

finder - the finder in leopard is amazing, fast, cute effective 'nuff said.

dashboard - it launches me into widget world!

safari - the savanna navigator that seems to never keep me on track, that i love anyways

firefox 3 beta 5 - my standards complient browser friend, i can't wait until firefox 3 is released! :)

mail - i always said that i would never use a desktop mail client: i evidently lied. i use the to-do a lot too.

adium - with my custom yoda icon and design (i made part of the theme) adium keeps me connected in my style

joost - alas an old friend. i watched many a episodes of jericho on joost.

handbrake - sans ugly pineapple icon handbrake helps me copy dvd's into movie files for iPod or MacBook :)

songbird - an interesting concept: itunes like music management built on firefox code, works like a browser, intergrates well with everything, and pretty. i'll switch when itunes annoys me too much...

itunes - a bloated, un-featured whore.

veoh player - plays/downloads videos from veoh for me. also pretty.

vlc - god of media players, plays anything. i mean anything.

pixelmator - a fantastic image editor

photobooth - good times with my mac :)

burn - a free cd burning program, data and music (for when i'm not on speaking terms with itunes).

audacity - a free cross-platform audio editor that i adore.

imovie oh eight - love/hate relationship

pages - best full featured word processor ever. kicks word butt!

textedit - my text scratch pad for everything, notes copy paste etc

bean - a text editor that goes full screen. i write my blog here now, and copy into the box in wp :)

it's only wednesday and i must make it to friday. i hope to be back soon! a special shout out to cindy, who is a wonderful friend flying 1,845 miles this summer to visit old friends. cindy, i love you, and you can't get here fast enough!

Salve

Firefox crew has released the final beta (next release will be the first release candidate) of the upcoming Firefox 3 browser and Percy Cabello over at Mozilla Links has put together a nice 4 page review of the latest release. The Beta 5 contains over 750 (!) fixes since the last version and it looks promising:

What is left? From a user perspective I would say almost nothing besides some retouches here and there to the user interface. Behind the scenes, however, work never ends: performance improvements, web standards compliance and edge cases are still being ironed.

Hardy Heron is a Long Term Support release (supported until 2011 - quick overview here) so the focus is on something durable, yet commencing with a severely crippled beta release of Firefox. But the Heron is smHardy and flyes on strong.

Perhaps a bit too keen, since the two versions of Firefox aren't really conflictive, and can easily live alongside each other in theory, (but in Ubuntu 8.04 they end up in the same directory), so you would have to use different profiles perhaps to run them in parallel), anyway, so, then, of course, it seems to me that sticking with stable Firefox 2 would have made it easier for at least me! and then offering the rough, but feature novel ride in unstable Firefox 3 for those who wanted, just as it was already the case in 7.10.

"Ubuntu 8.04 includes Firefox 3.0 beta 5. This was felt to be the best option despite its pre-release status, in light of the extended support lifetime of Ubuntu 8.04 and the importance and complexity of Firefox security updates. Further release candidates and the final release may be considered for post-release updates."

The choice of the incomplete Firefox 3 as default browser means that many will want to downgrade to their old tried and tested version of Firefox. That is easily done.

If you are not ready for a bit of tweaking and testing, then stay away from the smHardy Heron until 8.04.1:

"Hardy is the second Long Term Support ("LTS") release of Ubuntu, with a strong emphasis on supportability for long term deployments on both the desktop and the server.

Hardy will be delivered in April 2008 on the normal six-month Ubuntu cycle. It will be designated 8.04 LTS. There will be a scheduled point release (8.04.1) about three months after the initial release. For this LTS, Canonical will validate Hardy against a full portfolio of servers from major vendors, as well as running a certification program for ISVs."

I couldn't wait and had to resize some partitions anyway, to be able to do some miniDV video capturing, so I plunged right in. Almost..

..Before you install Ubuntu 8.04, backup your stuff if you have the space to do so.

One way of doing it is via the command line, konsole, virtual terminal or whatever.

Or simply use Nautilus: Places / Home .....

In Ubuntu to do it with a touch of old skool knowing what actually goes on press, for instance:

ALT+F2 - and then type "gnome-terminal" (without ""), press Enter/Return.

From here you can use the versatile rsync (read the lovely manual: man rsync), which is good when you want to move around large amounts of data, like your entire home directory, just to make sure that you keep it all, just in case. Rsync also allows you to do incremental backups and various other things. If you are new to command line, get going, it will make your life easier to know a few basic commands, like

apt-get install the_app_I_want and slocate

/// and

ssh tunneling and of course you should get acquainted with text editors, like nano.

Now to the backup: In the example below "a" is archive, which means that file permissions etc. are preserved (as is), "v" is verbose (speak to me!) "z" is compression of sorts (don't know why I use that, just a habit?!), and finally "r" is recursive, so that it dives into sub directories.

rsync -avzr /home/yourself /media/usbdisk/backups

--or wherever you want to / are able to store your back up. Then you have it all. If you only want or need to backup your firefox settings and bookmarks and all that, then you can just copy the entire folder called something like (assuming that you're upgrading from a "normal" gnu/linux setup):

/home/yourself/.mozilla/firefox/0sb12caw.default

you can cope that entire folder with Nautilus by clicking: Places / Home / - here press CTRL+H to also see hidden holders, like you would with any file manager, or you can use rsync as well:

rsync -avr /home/yourself/.mozilla/firefox/0sb12caw.default /media/disk/firefox2go

==

Then you might want to take a copy of /opt or any other scripts or settings, such as in /home/you/.xchat2

//or

/home/you/.purple (Pidgin. ex-Gaim, now funPidgin fork 2) - wherever you have something worth keeping in the space where you're going to install 8.04. It is possible to update from 7.10 to 8.04 without doing a clean, fresh install, but I wouldn't recommend it. However, after doing the backup you could just as well try and do a direct upgrade (just click on the update manager) and see what happens. Why not, if you have the bandwidth?!

Info here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and here http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2008/04/23/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-710-to-ubuntu-804/

With regard to installation I always do it manually and choose to install UNIX/GNU/Linux systems in at least three partitions (you could have a /var partition as well, if you had a lot of caching that you wnated):

partition 1: / [the root directory] formatted with ext3 (minimum 5-6-7 GB if you are going to add many applications/programmes to the standard setup. This partition here includes KDE4:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda3 6.5G 4.3G 1.9G 70% /

and also has a wide variety of codecs and acroread and other evil non-free chains I keep myself in. Note that your /tmp directory is operative in the root / directory, so you do not want this partition - ever - to get filled completely. A spare GB is nice. In the days of small hard disks it would inevitably happen one day if you were trying to squeeze things..

partition 2: /home - [also ext3 by me] there where you and other users have their data/documents. Another example, delivered from the command line or terminal - type:

df -h and press enter (it means: dISK fREE -hUMAN_TERMS) and shows you the partitions of the computer. Here is an excerpt of the output.

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda5 12G 1.7G 8.9G 17% /home

partition 3: swap [if you have less than 512MB RAM, then your swap space should be at least as big as your amount of RAM, so that if you have 512RAM then let your swap space be 512 too (if your disk to crammed, you can get away with half. If you have 1GB RAM there is no need to ever make your swap bigger than that - and you will be perfectly fine with 512MB swap space. Swap is called pagefile in Window$.

If you have windows installed google around for dual-boot setup, which is very easy too, just set up partitions manually and do not touch the primary partition(s) where windows resides. Then, by default, Ubuntu's installer will override the MBR (Master Boot Record) that Windows has written and then boot with a menu that allows you to choose between Ubuntu (also in safe mode etc.) and Winbloat or whatever you have that is automatically recognised and rendered bootable. Know before you go and do something. With Win 95/98, 2000 and XP it is out-of-the-box, as long as you manually do your partitions and leave it be.

Once you have installed Ubuntu then start Firefox 3 and play around with it for a while and check if you could live without most of your extensions and with some flake for some time to come. I couldn't. If you just want to hang on to your well tested Firefox 2.0.0.14 (current) setup and transfer your profile, then shut down Firefox and either:

"Go into synaptic package manager, search for firefox. Click on firefox 3 and choose "mark for removal", Click firefox 2 and mark for installation." - or do the straight up thing (where you completely remove FF3 and its settings in the very same kind of directory as you just backed up:):

sudo apt-get purge firefox-3.0

rm -r /home/you/.mozilla/firefox

sudo apt-get install firefox-2

NB: If you just install FF2 on top of FF3's settings, then it will run with those settings, so in theory you could keep FF3, install FF2 and add your old settings after having deleted FF3's initially generated profile contents, then, again, run FF3 and it will attempt to run with your old settings. Probably a good way to have it crash or to corrupt your data (keep the backup!), but it is possible.

Once FF2 is installed, then run it (noting that your original Firefox short cut icons points to:

/usr/bin/firefox - but should point to: /usr/bin/firefox-2

- so edit icon: Right-click on icon choose "properties".

Running Firefox the first time generates a new folder in your home directory/folder (this is common behaviour for a programme and if you carrying your settings with you from elsewhere it is good practice to run the given app once and then replace the generated profile):

/home/yourgoodself/.mozilla/firefox/ - and it also generates in there a profile, called something similar to that folder that you backed up. Now delete all the contents of the folder, but not the folder itself or any other files - at all - so that you now have an empty folder like this:

/home/yourgoodself/.mozilla/firefox/xys.someword/

....yes, you guessed it, paste into that folder the contents of the folder you backed up and then start Firefox - and, needless to say, whenever moving any data around, Firefox should be shut down!!

There you go, your good old Firefox is with you.

The exact same procedure can be applied Thunderbird, naturally, -this is the way to backup your Thunderbird setting from your previous system and when upgrading to any other system: copy entire folder, install thunderbird (sudo apt-get install thunderbird) in 8.04 Heron, run it once and "install" an RSS account minimally or something, so that it generates the profile. Then delete it all from within the profile folder. In the empty space you paste the contents of your backed up folder. That way your identity stays the same, but the name changes and follows the way of the new world.

On the Kubuntu side of things you can also get the newest of the new - KDE4. This is perhaps some addition that is nice to add on!

If you install any other flavour of Ubuntu 8.04 you can simply do:

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-kde4-desktop

///or via

System / Adminstration / Synaptic / - Search for "kubuntu-kde4-desktop" and mark for installation, apply and off you go. If it the first time you run synaptic, you must first click "reload" and "mark all upgrades" and "apply" after you have gone to "settings" / "repositories" and had a look around there. I always exclude sources, since I rarely need them. Then there is the issue of how many updates you want (after also looking at third parties like Medibuntu) - adding:

"pre-released updates (hardy-proposed)" puts you even further out on the bleeding edge, but if you are doing it, then you might as well do it properly, init?!? If you are not wanting to right at the forefront with some stability as cost, then wait for Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1

You can also go down that way from the beginning either via the initial Kubuntu download page or from this list:

http://se.cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu-kde4/releases/8.04/release/ - of you don't know which version you need, then it is probably this one:

http://se.cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu-kde4/releases/8.04/release/kubuntu-kde4-8.04-desktop-i386.iso

or even better as a torrent:

http://se.cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu-kde4/releases/8.04/release/kubuntu-kde4-8.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

That should give you 8.04 with KDE4.

What else can you say about 8.04 smHardy Heron? It shuts down really fast on this machine and the whole compiz thing with bubbly flaky fish like windows and rotating cube with filling and what not is all in action, but I have switched all that off - even the precious "ALT+TAB" routine leaves you dazzled in semi-opacities. Too much for me. I just want a tool, not a toy.

What I could need was for Firestarter to include an interface to very easily install and configure DHCP for internet sharing via Firestarter, which works a charm (apt-get install firestarter and run via Applications, Internet, Firestarter and then configure your two interfaces.

(NB: first apt-get remove network-manager, since it just doesn't make sense when you have two interfaces sharing via Firestarter.

It also seems bizarre that once has to fumble so much to get to see some proper temperature output - but at least you might be lucky with a combinbation of these two sets of information:

http://www.go2linux.org/lm-sensors-ubuntu / or

http://www.quietearth.us/articles/2006/09/30/Ubuntu-Sensor-temperature-monitoring-with-lmsensors

"It might be worth noting that you mostly need to reboot between running sensors-detect and running sensors, especially if the ISA bus driver needed to be loaded.
For people who are new to Gnome desktops (like Ubuntu) you get sensors-applet appearing by right-clicking on the bar at the top of the screen and selecting "Add to Panel...", then selecting the "Hardware Sensors Monitor" in the "System and Hardware" section."

For laptops in particular - and when doing multimedia work or used in warm places - it is rather nice nice to be able to see the temperature of the CPU the system as such and the HDD as well. For the latter you should do apt-get install smartmontools and add the sensor and configure it by right-clicking on the icons that appear after you have added the applet that it all depends on: in fact begin the whole process by doing:

apt-get install sensors-applet

I also do, I must admit, given the dire state of Evince, apt-get install acroread after I have followed the instructions for Medibuntu here.

"Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu) is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons (copyright, license, patent, etc).

Some of these packages include the libdvdcss package from VideoLAN and the external binary codecs package (commonly known as w32codecs) used by MPlayer and xine."

This is your route to DVD play back and other things that are useful for the temporary pragmatist:

apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

//or

apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras

//or

apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras

....and from the on in you're on your own with synaptic.... perhaps you want Sun's Java or vlc and its plugins, I certainly do add them, and also xchat and encryption for thunderbird ("enigmail") and pidgin. I also prefer old skool music applications, like XMMS, but it has finally been removed, after losing .flac in the world of Gutsy it is now dead. A good choice seems to be Audacious with plugins - replaces it well. Until they actually develop sensible and useful database driven music apps that can actually handle a huge collection (40k+ files) I stick with the old way, and it works just fine!

Some of the ways of doing things described above, were first written here.

Remember that computers ought to be free, open technology and not black boxes. Learn to use the internet in a social DYI manner - close the windows!

Wowwwwwwwwww! yes this was what I shouted when I installed Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy and enabled restricted drivers for my ATI card and found that Hibernate and suspend just works out of the box. Brilliant. I don't remember where but I read somewhere that even sky is not the limit for Ubuntu and Mark Shuttleworth. This is so true, so true that it is just difficult for me to express.

The only thing that I didn't liked is Firefox 3 bet 5 is forced on you, even though Firefox-2 is available in repository but making Firefox 3 beta verson a default choice is not the good decision. Because my beloved Google browser sync does not work with Firefox 3 and neither many of other available extensions.

I have tried both Ubuntu and Kubuntu flavors of Hardy and both are impressive. I will keep posting updates and my experiences with Ubuntu from time to time. For now, I have to leave we will do it later.

Firebug Extension a very effective tool to debug HTML, CSS and Javascript for Mozill Firefox. No web developer can do his/her job better without this tool. Now if you wanted to fix UI for the latest Mozilla Firefox 3 then you will get some questions bubbling on your mind like,

Can we use firebug extension to fix User Interface of web pages on new Mozilla firefox 3?
How to install firebug on Mozilla firefox 3 beta 5?
And etc.

Answers are,

Yes, you can use firebug extension even though it has not yet come up with its version for Mozilla Firefox 3.
Steps to install firebug for Mozilla Firefox:

1) Type the following link on your IE browser address bar https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search?q=firebug&cat=all
Note: If you use mozilla firefox 3 latest version to download the extension you will see a text saying "This add-on is for older versions of Firefox" because its made for this latest version.

2) So use ie browser click download button from the above linked page to download firebug-1.05-fx+fl.xpi and save it to your local hard disc.

3) Change firebug-1.05-fx+fl.xpi to firebug-1.05-fx+fl.zip to open the zip file.

4) Open install.rdf file by double clicking on it (notepad may open) and now you can change the browser version 2.0.0 to 3.0.0 after from the rdf file code as mentioned below,
Replace the code and save
from "<em:maxVersion>2.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>" to "<em:maxVersion>3.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>"

- Codes depict the maximum support by firebug extension for Mozilla Firfox browser.

5) Change firebug-1.05-fx+fl.zip file extension to firebug-1.05-fx+fl.xpi and copy it to your local hard disc. Example path: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions.

That's it you are done with it. You have got that working extension for your new Mozill Firefox 3 browser.
Now just close your firefox 3 browser and reopen the browser. You will get Add on browser pop-up window to install that firebug xpi file as add-on to your browser.

I hope your font end development will deserve super success. All best.
Any comments? Please do reply to the post.

Heb even geduld, want het importeren duurt even.

Sluit het Bibliotheek venster.

Firefox 2 paswoorden kopieren

Hey folks, I have another approach that could help to develop web pages compatible for all the different browsers like IE 8 Beta 1, Mozilla Fireforx 3 Beta 5 , Firefox 2.

The novel approach is about get a additional CPU Box which will have Firefox 3 and IE 8 installed and could be connected by RDP (Remote Desktop) from your main CPU Box. The Main CPU box could have some older version of firefox and ie browsers. By sharing /hosting developing web pages, we could test and develop pages with RDP connection.
I hope this approach could be more useful than my first post about an approach to develop and test pages for multiple IE and Firefox browser version.

All new coming posts will be related to UI fixes and workarounds for IE 8 and Firefox 3 till every one gets hands on with these latest browsers behaviors.

<Reply to Rafi Ali Khan’s Comments: I will have posts detailed with snapshots when it’s required to make the context clear as per your advice. Thanks.>
