OMD formed at the end of the 1970s, with their first album appearing at the beginning of 1980. They took a similar slant to Kraftwerk, but when they wrote about telephone boxes ('Red frame/White light') and oil refineries ('Stanlow') they were much more pop orientated, even though they frequently used industrial and dischordant sounds. Listen to the albums 'Architecture & Morality' and also 'Dazzleships' for good examples of this. It's funny as the 'Architecture & Morality' was regarded as a classic and 'Dazzleships' a bit of a flop. I think the latter was just as good, even though all the singles on it, including 'Genetic engineering' and 'Telegraph' often get missed off OMD greatest hits CDs. Other great albums are 'Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark', 'Organisation' and 'Junk Culture'. Take a listen to 'Romance of the Telescope' and 'Sacred Heart', which I think just sum up OMD.

OMD are also currently on tour.

SEVENTH HEAVEN ~Instrumental~

1. Polyrhythm

It's what really started the Perfume rush. This song that's about recycling and many rhythms (hence the title) is so friggin catchy. The music is numbing to my ears and its soooo good. The chorus could use a little work, but when they get to the repetitive part saying ~Polyrizumu and Polyloopu~ that's where the song just becomes beyond awesome. All 3 girls get a solo line and its ahhhhh. Best song of their career even though "love the world" is up there too.

2. SEVENTH HEAVEN

A beautiful piano line starts this pretty smooth ballad perhaps? It's still dance but it doesn't sound like a lot of the other songs. I really enjoyed this laidback tune and how relaxed the girls are. Especially when they say ~Seboonth Heaben~. The song is pretty much a prelude to what "Baby cruising Love" was. So it's pretty good beyond that.

3. Polyrhythm -extra short edit-

No!!!!!!! Why did they decide to do this. They took the part that made the song what it was and destroyed it. It still is a good song but stripping it's repetitive part is just unholy. At least it's Polyrhythm and it still is one of their best songs...does this make me sound like I'm advertising the song or what?

Polyrhythm is the best single Perfume has released. I mean the A-side is magically delicious to listen to, except for that poor excuse of an edit. SEVENTH HEAVEN was surprisingly good and the choice to leave it off of "GAME" was pretty bad since it would've fit easily. Other than that...AWESOME SINGLE

PRECIOUS end of summer mix

1. PRECIOUS

So this new era starts with this kind of girly track. I actually enjoyed it with the PV so much R.I.P. Nagi (director of PV). It's got such a magical and yet dance feeling to it. It's quite the happy track and being a Nakata track it's another great A-side released this year. Though y'know I can't help but think dancing cats for some reason....x.x

2. CANDY

So, when I first saw this track, I thought it'd be uber cute and girly even moreso than "PRECIOUS". Then to find out that it's like a more softer and slower version of "Macaroni". This reminds me of her past works just as much. She's borderline whispering/singing the chorus. Sadly, this isn't as memorable as her other B-sides have been.

3. PRECIOUS end of summer mix

Hmmm, this remix is so jumpy, though it still retains majority of the main arrangement. There was not really much of a drastic change to the song. I guess the addition of acoustic guitar does make it more summery. I just wished there was more differences to it.

MEG's first single of the era was pretty much a letdown. I was expecting more especially with all that Nakata has been doing for his other artists. PRECIOUS though is the only awesome track from here. Very disappointing b-side and remix...

Lyrics

This openly sexual dance/pop number opens with a number of layered guitars, descending into the lower frequencies as synthetic basses enter with the verse. After some hard-to-hear vocals, the singer jumps an octave into a synthetically sweet tone, (not to mention much more audible), in what passes for a chorus. Following a sigh-filled interlude, the same formula is used again, before the song enters a Portuguese phase and fades out to a refrain that loosely translates to 'he was a great !@£*, and so am I'.

As is customary for a electro-pop song such as this, the same instrumental patterns are used throughout; a punchy kick drum leads a straightforward dance rhythm, whilst a spread out combination of dance-y guitars and synthetic basses repeat the same addictive hooks and keep the mix busy. Lyrical content is appropriately simple, with a musically themed verse ("From all the drinks the one I like more is music") meshing with a musically themed chorus ("Music is my boyfriend / music is my girlfriend").

Overall, a snappily produced and highly addictive dance song. The sugary hooks will prompr you to hit the 'repeat' button, and while the lyrics are far from complex, they're definitely fun.

Pros: well mixed, very addictive, fun lyrics.

Cons: lacks variety and depth.

Rating: 8.7 / 10

Trawling the Internet I've come across so much music that others would class as electropop, but I wouldn't. As so much music these days uses synthesizers it all gets a bit blurred. For music to appear in this blog it will probably have a strong emphasis on the use of synths - not just used as padding, but for tunes. I say 'probably', because occasionally I'll come across the odd exception to the rule. I know modern dance styles make excessive use of synths, but the emphasis is on the beat and not the tune. Feel free to disagree and I will consider any musical suggestions... except any that involve sticking a synthesizer where it's not likely to fit. Even a Casio VL-Tone.

Lily Allen is currently working on a new album called Stuck On The Naughty Step in which she's moving away from her usual ska-type songs to electropop. And it's awesome.

Lily Allen says the title of the album is a reference to all those people who say she's a bad person for the ever-so-slightly crude and drunken lifestyle she leads. "In England, when kids are naughty, they get sent to sit on the naughty step. I feel like I'm stuck in a hole where people say, 'Lily, you're bad. Go think about what you've done.'"

Oh good! It's Devo!. Most people remember them for 'Whip it', a robotic new-wave track from the start of the 80s. I prefer to remember them a bit later, when they produced electropop tracks like 'Big Mess' and 'That's Good' from the album 'Oh no! It's Devo'. The album reminds me of the first couple of albums from Depeche Mode, but with 'different' vocals. They certainly weren't as serious as Depeche Mode - not sure if this is a good or bad thing. You could also have a listen to the 'New Traditionalists' album, which to my ears has more emphasis on bass synthesizers. The album 'Shout' also has a couple of classics (try '4th Dimension'), but the production on this album doesn't have the rawness I enjoyed in their earlier music.

"Like Porcelain" und "Fractales Part 1 & 2" sind u.a. zwei sehr gelungene Tracks ohne Gesang.

Recientemente estuviste produciendo y tocando en la serie de shows titulada "Flow of the underground".

We've been trying to pin down Tommy Lugo, frontman & guitarist of cosmic rock band Stellarscope for awhile now, but Tommy is your archetypical indie musician whose life is a blur of band & solo project-orientated writing & CD recording, plus the man is heavily involved in organising popular multi-band festivals & tours as well as running an independent recording studio!! It was unfortunate that we were unable to pin Tommy down long enough for a "face to face", but instead we've got the next best thing in the way of a question & answer sheet - enjoy...

Q: So, first things first, what inspired the band name “Stellarscope”? Does it have any significance?A:

When I first started the project it was named “flow” but we started noticing that there were so many bands with “flow” in their names so we decided to change it. We came up with a composite name- Stellar (of or pertaining to the stars) and scope (to look at or investigate, as in order to evaluate or appreciate). Once we decided on the name we discovered that there was a hand-held portable planetarium that identifies stars and constellations, with which you can chart the night sky, called “Stellarscope” and it couldn’t have worked out better for us since we play spaced out blissrock.

Q: The Stellarscope line up is complete with the addition of Bob DeFlaviis on Bass/Keys, Paul Colleti on guitars/lap steel/sax/trumpet & Bob Forman on Drums – how’d you guys meet?

A: Bob Forman and I have been playing together since 1998, we met through an ad I put out when I was looking for members for the band. Bob DeFlaviss was referred to us by Peter Ohlert, who played bass with us for 2 years but had to leave the band since he was moving to Las Vegas. Paul Colleti played bass with Stellarscope a couple of years ago, left to pursue some other projects and returned this year- he recorded on some of the Living Under the Radar tracks, we initially met him through an ad.

Q: The music you play is pretty trippy stuff – how does it fit into the local music scene?

A: Initially we really didn’t fit in with anyone or anywhere for that matter. I started networking with similar minded artists and creating shows dedicated to left of dial sounding bands to create a “scene”, the result has been great and the community of both artists & fans keeps growing!

Q: If you can put together a “Fantasy league” backing band who would you select to play in “Tommy’s All-stars” and why?

A: I already have my fantasy league band…lol… but Keith Moon on drums (love his insane style of playing), Syd Barrett on guitar (the man was a genius), Kevin Shields on guitar (another guitar genius), and D'arcy Wretzky on bass (her lines are simple but there is so much power and emotion in her playing) would be a dream band like no other… so yeah, it would be total chaos…hahaha

Q: Stellarscope are heavily into “the complete package” in as much you guys have been involved with organising tours & festivals including many other indie bands – tell us a little about that…

A:

Hey, we have to be completely self contained- no label out there gets what we do. It all started in 1998, when I moved to Philadelphia, we would go out to shows and we heard a lot of complaining going on about “how there was no scene” so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I had previous experience from organizing and promoting shows in Puerto Rico so, I started organizing shows called Flow of the Underground regionally and promoting it the grassroots DIY way… on the streets. People started showing up at shows and the audience grew bigger.

In 2003 I was approached by Alison Records (German shoegaze label we were signed to at the time) to organize a tour for the label and so I did and it was very successful. The tour brought together the international artists Malory (Berlin-Germany), Highspire (Philadelphia-USA), Skywave (Virginia-USA), Resplandor (Lima-Peru), and Stellarscope. We also had great bands like Project Skyward (NYC), Hollowphonic (Toronto), Hypnotech 3 (Hamilton) performing and tons of other bands that came out and supported the tour like Brasilia (NYC), Aerial Love Feed (NYC), Sonora (Canada),White Star Line (Canada), siblingnortwin (Canada), Alcian Blue (DC), Bedroom Set (NYC/VA), Scattered Planets (Philly), Nelson of Blisscent Records (USA), & all the others that I am forgetting.

Then in 2004 I decided to put together an annual festival showcasing the emerging artists of the scene and I called it the Popnoise Festival. So, it’s been 3 great years of awesome performances and we are planning on mobilize the concept abroad as well.

Q: You have your own recording studio plus video production company & record label – how do you find the time to produce your own material?!

A: I don’t sleep…lol… I guess I am good at managing my time and don’t waste much time in front of the tube (it is such a waste of valuable time- really), and I have to keep myself busy or I feel unproductive! We only live once and I wanted to as much as I possibly can before the end of my life.

Q: The band aren’t strangers to touring with many trips along the Eastern US coast, Canada & even Puerto Rico – any plans to jump the pond and visit the UK?

A: To be completely honest, we have been talking about it for years but we are too broke to finance the trip ourselves… we are accepting donations to get this done so people start sending us your money (we’ll put it to good use… I promise!)…lol… I would love to get the Popnoise Festival over to Europe (I am sure it would be a success over there since it is the birthplace of the style of music we are involved in), right now I am focusing On Puerto Rico for early 2007, Peru & Mexico for late 2007… we’ll see;-)

Q: What would you say was the best tour you’ve done to date?

A: The Alison Records tour - it was my first and it was a learning experience that I will never forget. It gave me a better understanding on what and what not do.

Q: What would you say was the weirdest gig / show you’ve played to date?

A: I must say it was a venue in New Jersey, we were invited to play and when we got there it was a biker bar and it was like being transported back in time to circa 1985 - big hair, tights and all… we were considering not playing because we though we would be chased off stage but to our surprise the audience loved it and we were invited to headline their Christmas party… weird, eh?

Q: 2006 saw the release of your forth (?) CD “Living Under The Radar” which has experienced some positive reviews – would you say this was your strongest album to date?

A: Actually, Living under the Radar is our 8th full length (we also have released 5 EPs) and it is by far our strongest album to date. We strayed away a little from our shoegaze/dreampop roots for this album and the final result was a fusion of styles. It seems to be getting more attention than any of our previous efforts… which is nice since we are not getting any younger, you know!?!!?

Q: Any new albums on the drawing board currently?

A: We are currently in the process of mixing and mastering a CD, that will come out this winter, which contains a lot of previously un-released material that were suppose to be on other albums as well as some live material. It’ll be called “Those left behind”. We are also recording our new material and we are really excited about it since it is taking us into other directions we have not explored yet - it should be ready by the spring of 2007.

Q: You’ve released a number of solo albums under the “Panophonic” banner what’s the feedback been like on those releases?

A: Panophonic is my outlet for sounds that that I don’t get to do with Stellarscope, it is a more linear, layered and experimental project with a pop twist to it. Pano- is latin for in every direction and Phonic is the nature of sound so, Panophonic means Omni-Directional Sound! Though I don’t spend that much time promoting it it seems to have a broader appeal across the board than Stellarscope does… it might be the pop elements in the music, I’m really not sure but I must be doing something right. lol

Q: With 2006 drawing to a close what does the rest of the year hold in store for Stellarscope?

A: Well, we’ll be recording for the rest of the year, maybe play out some shows in December, otherwise we are looking forward to Christmas (maybe Santa will bring us a large bag full of unmarked $100 bills to buy new equipment and fly over the pond to Europe and rock like there is no tomorrow).

Q: Do you have any targets set for 2007?

A: For 2007 we want to have the new album released, have a couple more Popnoise Festivals in addition to the one that happens here every year, get heard by a broader audience, and win a Grammy & a MTV video award… I am not overly ambitious…hahaha…

Many thanks Tommy for taking the time to fill out this questionnaire – good luck with the latest releases, the festival organising, the record label and all of the other excellent music-orientated projects that you’re involved in!

(1375 total words in this text)
(2615 Reads)

Philadelphia’s Stellarscope is a duo that has been creating concoctions of lush noise for a few years now. They are in the process of releasing two wonderful works of shoegaze goodness: “Wasted Time” EP and the full-length “Reverberations”. Tommy Lugo and Bob Forman from the band answered our questions about this up and coming musical force.

How did you guys get your start in music?

Tommy Lugo- I started singing & playing bass in punk rock bands in the late 80s, though I was singing since I was a kid. My first year of college, while singing in the Puerto Rican Band Arnold Layne, I was introduced to shoegaze by longtime friend, guitarist and band-member Gardy Perez and it changed my world forever.

Bob Forman- I come from a musical background- my mother was a pianist & my sister plays classical flute. I wanted to play the drums because I wanted to be like Keith Moon (The Who), & John “Bonzo” Bonham (Led Zepellin).

And how did Stellarscope form?

Tommy Lugo- I started stellarscope (actually initially the project was called theflow) back in 1995 after the break-up of Arnold Layne. It was meant to be a solo project but I found some people that were interested in playing out & recording with me so we did. Then I moved to the Philly suburbs and met Bob…

Bob Forman- I joined Stellarscope in 1998 through an ad that I responded to… and I have been the only other member of Stellarscope that hasn’t left or been fired…hahaha… we have a revolving door of musicians that come and go.

What influences does your band have, musically, lyrically, etc.

Tommy Lugo- From my end I’d say Joy Division, The Cure, Bauhaus, Love-n-Rockets, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Radiohead, Slowdive, Pink Floyd… and the list goes on.

Bob Forman- I’m from the old school of rock… Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, The Who… though I also loved the drumming of Smashing Pumpkin’s Jimmy Chamberlin.

How do you write and record songs as a band?

Tommy Lugo- I tend to write all of the music, then I bring it in, and we jam and figure out what we want to do with it. We also jam a lot so some music comes together that way. We record in simple fashion… as a 3 piece… bass, drums, & guitar (that is if there is a bass-player), then we do the multi-tracking and a lot of the times we keep our first takes- because it seems to carry a rawer element.

Bob Forman- yeah, we love to jam… can we jam now?

On your "Reverberations" release, you changed your style to include drum machines and electronics...why did you experiment with these new sounds, and are you pleased with the results?

Tommy Lugo- Reverberations was an experiment of sorts… we were working on an album for Enraptured/Endorphins Records (UK) and I came up with the idea of having the members of stellarscope at the time to write & record their own individual songs since we all had solo electro-pop projects , then once the base of the individual recordings was done we exchanged what we had done amongst ourselves we recorded what we wanted to add and we had Dave Juncos (of Dimazza –our keyboard player at the time) mix it down, then I recorded all of the vocals and did the final mix & mastering. None of us had heard the final product until that time. Needless to say I was very satisfied with the result. It is more open & sad in terms of sound and sadness makes me happy. I’ll take this time to say thank you to Mike Meyers, Dave Juncos, & Jim Snyder because they were all instrumental in the creation of Reverberations.

Bob Forman- I have no comment… I just sat there…hahahaha

How important are lyrics (in comparison with your sounds)...how do you balance the two?

Tommy Lugo- Lyrics to me are as important as the music… it is the extension of the feelings of a moment. We look as music as art… so the lyrics are the finishing touches of the masterpiece. Though sometimes they are buried in the walls of noise your subconscious will still receive the intended message. Funny, people who read the lyrics tend to say they are darker compared to the music…

Bob Forman- Tom, that’s all you…

What do you think of the current shoegaze/dream scene?

Bob Forman- What scene? Jajaja I didn’t know… maybe somebody forgot to tell me about it…

Tommy Lugo- I love the bands of the underground… like a place to bury strangers, skywave, alcian blue, project skyward, sciflyer, highspire, autodrone, resplandor, un.real, etc. And because I love this music is why I work so hard at putting together shows, tours, & festivals, which I have done since 1998 in the east coast of the USA. There’s so much talent out there being overlooked, it is a shame so, I am trying to do my part… more people should be doing it for their own cities and they would see the growth. To tell you the truth I like the underground bands more so than the ones that are getting attention… maybe it’s because the purity of what they are doing. Props to all of you out there pouring your hearts out.

How has your music been received in the scene?

Bob Forman- What scene? Hahaha

Tommy Lugo- Other than some fans & some fellow bands that we play with I don’t think people get what we do… we have heard “you are too British for the Americans, too American for the British”, “the vocals are too upfront that’s not shoegaze”, “it’s too noise-y”, ”it’s too rock”, “there are too many changes”, etc. Our music is a lot different than most of the bands in the scene because we want our music to reflect all of our influences from classic rock to jazz to goth to shoegaze to alternative rock. Innovation is key. That is why we treat every album as an entity of its own, and morph, bend, twist, & turn things to the next finished work of art.

Tommy, I know you are Puerto Rican...how has your music been received by other Puerto Ricans?

Tommy Lugo- all who has heard what we do like it, which is simply delightful. I am pretty well known in PR so it’s really cool to have your people open their arms to you.

Is there even a Puerto Rican shoegaze/dreampop movement out there?

Tommy Lugo-There isn’t a Rican shoegaze/dreampop movement per sé but there is a cool underground movement brewing… there’s my friend Gardy Perez’s band Un.Real- which is an awesome shoegaze band. You also have bands like Balun- which is an excellent dark electro-pop band, Cornucopia- dark ambient, Burning Faces- dark goth like experimental rock, and more like Descojon Urbano, Introdujos, Suite, etc.

What do you think of the "independent revolution" occurring right now in music as a result of the internet and home studios?

Bob Forman- I think it is great it is opening more doors for artists that deserve to be heard by a broader audience.

Tommy Lugo- I’m with Bob on this one…

What are some CD's that you're into right now?

Bob Forman- bands I’m into right now are the Secret Machines, Lake Trout, Queens of the Stone Age, The White Stripes, & the Music.

Tommy Lugo- I’ve been listening to Skywave’s Sythstatic, Project Skyward’s Strange Synchronicities, Balun’s While Sleeping, Lake Trout’s Another One Lost, Autodrone’s demo, & A Place To Bury Strangers’ demo.

Do you have any other projects besides Stellarscope that you are working on?

Bob Forman- I’m Stellarscope all the way.

Tommy Lugo- I have my solo project Panophonic… it is my avenue to express the mess that is constantly in my head… I’ve recorded 9 full length albums in the past 2 year’s, just finished another one and I am working on 2 more… that’s what you can do when you don’t sleep…hahaha.

What's in the future for Stellarscope?

Bob Forman- I don’t worry about the future… what come will come. Tommy Lugo- noise sweet noise… music sweet music… a bigger fan base & more exposure would be nice…

Any other comments?

Bob Forman- Everything sux…….. except, I guess, Stellarscope!

Tommy Lugo- …come and drown in a sea of lush noise.

Living under the radar es vuestro último trabajo (Pateticorecordings 2006).

Entrevista: Carlos Indypendiente

TEST INDYPENDIENTES
