But in places like Ecuador, as in the rest of Latin America, human development has always shown its dark sides

The country, which contains every South American ecosystem within its borders, which include the Galapagos Islands, has had disastrous collisions with multi-national companies. Many, from banana companies to natural gas extractors, have exploited its natural resources and left little but pollution and poverty in their wake.

Now it is in the grip of a bitter lawsuit against US oil giant Chevron, formerly Texaco, over its alleged dumping of billions of gallons of crude oil and toxic waste waters into the Amazonian jungle over two decades.

It is described as the Amazonian Chernobyl, and 30,000 local people claim that up to 18m tonnes of oil was dumped into unlined pits over two decades, in defiance of international guidelines, and contaminating groundwater over an area of some 1,700 hectares (4,200 acres) and leading to a plethora of serious health problems for anyone living in the area. Chevron has denied the allegations. In April, a court-appointed expert announced in a report that, should Chevron lose, it would have to pay up to $16bn (£8.9bn) in damages.

The new constitution of Ecuador, ratified last week by a large popular majority, goes beyond the traditional 'sustainable developmentalist' paradigm, recognizing inalienable rights to nature (Title II, Chapter VII, Art. 1):

Nature or Pachamama, where life is reproduced and exists, has the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution.

Every person, people, community or nationality, will be able to demand the recognitions of rights for nature before the public organisms. The application and interpretation of these rights will follow the related principles established in the Constitution.

This can be seen as the first attempt to codify an ecocentric point of view in giuridical tools. The consequences of this shift are still to be observed. For sure, it will be more difficult in future for foreign multinational companies to exploit Ecuador's national resources and human labor, as the consitution set strict principles against the commodification of water resources, on food sovreignity and for the protection of indigenous people.

we were taking the bus home to guayaquil and it was packed full of people and so we were standing in the aisle, holding on to the luggage racks for like three hours, until the bus cleared out enough so we could sit.  the bus was driving back and forth down the side of the mountains, with a fabulous view out into the valleys and flat lands, and fog had settled but we were well above the fog, and the sun was setting off in the distance so the sky was all red and orange and it was the most beautiful sunset I´ve ever seen, the sun setting into the fog and illuminating the mountains.  we were shifting sides on the bus so we´d always be on the side with the sunset.  ecuadorians were taking pictures with their cell phones.  gringos were taking pictures with digital cameras (not us, we carefully hide our cameras on our persons and then pretend we don´t have them, so that no one is tempted to rob us). a kid asked me if we have places like that in the US. I´m at the same time bummed I don´t have a picture and fully aware that no picture would do it justice at all. 

I also had a completely successful conversation with the kid, Walter, whose chair I was leaning on the majority of the ride.  he had an english test today (good luck, walter!) and quizzed himself on english with my help.  he also quizzed me on my spanish words.  he tried to stump me with the hardest words he could think of, but was not always successful (photosynthesis, casi igual en español).  he asked who I was voting for in the presidential election and knew the candidates.  he´s middle school aged, if you´re wondering.  he told me all the places I should go in ecuador and guayaquil and asked all about rostro de cristo and I felt accomplished because we had a full on conversation and I only had to ask melissa for word help a couple of times. 

it was great to take a break and get out of duran and away from life as a volunteer for a bit and just travel.  I like travel.  it´s fun.  and it builds community!

I came across this interesting letter of Abraham Lincoln's, which is currently being auctioned off at Sotheby's.  It is currently valued at between U.S. $250,000 and $350,000.  I really enjoyed seeing it!

Since  I teach cursive writing, I'm always interested in looking at handwriting samples.  I showed this lettter to my daughter to see if she could read it.  She could read some of it.  However,  some certain specific flaws, paticularly with proportion of letters, make certain bit hard to read (especially if you're not used to deciphering handwriting, as most teachers are used to doing).

Here are some examples of problems in Lincoln's cursive writing.  Most d''s are missing their tall stems (for example, look at the words understand and husband's, both in the second line of the body of the letter).  His y's at the end of words look almost like u's with a scratchy tail (see the word enemy in the fourth line of the body).  Most of his l's are no taller than his other small letters (see the word helped at the end of the third line of the body, where the l should be as tall as the h, but intead, barely surpasses the e in height).

Lincoln's slant, however, is good (correct amount of forward slant).

This particular sample of cursive writing would not pass my third-grade class.  However, it might not be his "best" writing--few of us use our "best" writing on a daily basis, as it's too time-consuming.

The reason I'm so particular in teaching handwriting (I'm sure some of you are wondering) is that in our American school, the teachers often change from year-to-year.  Sometimes we never know who we'll get until almost the last minute, or even what country they will be from.  (We've had teachers from English-speaking counries all around the world.)  Often the teachers from other countries don't even know cursive (much less American cursive), and sometimes the younger teachers now arriving from America don't know cursive either!  So of course they don't give their classes any instruction in it, nor do they use it on the board.  So whatever cursive my kids get in Grade 3 is often all they will get, ever.  That's why I teach them well in Grade 3, and get them to a standard that will serve them the rest of their lives before they leave my class.

Sunday was a quiet day in Cuenca (Ecuador). When I ventured out for lunch at about 2 in the afternoon, the streets where empty and almost everything was closed. My plan was to have a big lunch, in fact I had fixated on a healthy serving of one of the rotisserie chickens I had seen cooking in many restaurant windows. Saturday night, I had stayed in and eaten things that I had bought at the supermarket on Friday afternoon, and my plan for Sunday dinner was to do the same thing again.

I’ve been taking it easy, since I still have my cold. I am trying to believe that it is starting to get better. The last two mornings I have awoken with the belief that it was gone, but within a few minutes of getting out of bed, I have started coughing again.

So anyway, without much trouble I did find one of those chicken places open at 2 on Sunday afternoon. It had a menu and pictures of the offerings on the wall. I saw what I wanted, one-half chicken, $8.00 to eat in or $7.00 to carry out. Pictured with the chicken were several sides, but it wasn’t too clear what they were. I walked up to the counter and ordered the half-chicken to eat in, handed the person working behind the counter my money and got my change. Nothing unusual there. He directed me to have a seat at a table.

The server came, looked at my cash-register receipt, and started questioning me about whether I really wanted to eat in. I said that indeed I did. I wondered what that was all about—I must admit that I didn’t understand everything he said—but I didn’t worry about it too much. He was still looking at me in a strange way when he brought me my drink, but I didn’t understand what was wrong until he brought me two large bowls of soup.

I guess in Ecuador, where a chicken dinner often consists of a single drumstick, a half-chicken is considered more than one person could possibly eat. I’m certain that there was no indication on the menu of this, but I apparently had ordered a family meal.

The chicken was very good, and I had no trouble eating it all. I just had a couple of spoonfuls of the two bowls of soup, which the waiter was intent on removing from my table as soon as possible. I was also served a large plate of white rice, a small plate of fries, and what I would consider a small dinner salad. I ate most of the fries, a taste or two of rice, and didn’t touch the salad—unless it is specially cleansed, lettuce in South America is questionable for North American digestive systems due to the presence of unfamiliar bacteria. I think it’s the first time in my life that I have left a restaurant with so much food left on the table.

But as a faux pas, it’s not nearly as bad as the meal I once had in France in my 20s, where I followed my dinner by eating an entire bowl of mayonnaise, thinking that it was the custard I had ordered for dessert. I was embarrassed by the two bowls of soup, but not nearly as much as I was when the French waiter brought out the real bowl of custard.

La revista Mundo Diners (edición Octubre) ha publicado un completo artículo sobre la vida de Andrés Calamaro, el título del reportaje es: Calamaro; entre Homero Simpson y los Rolling Stones, la nota es muy extensa (tres páginas), pero quiero resaltar algunos detalles que llamaron mi atención, como por ejemplo la introdución que hace Luis Borja, el autor de la nota:

"Crecimos acostumbrados a que las grandes estrellas del rock mueran antes de cumplir los treinta, ahogados en su propio vómito o con una jeringa sucia enterrada en el brazo. Nos acostumbramos a que nuestros héroes sufran y nos enojamos con ellos cuando no nos hablan de soledad, sangre o alcohol. Es esta idea romántica la que nos mueve a pensar que todas las guitarras que siguen haciendo ruido a partir de la tercera década, sin que importe si tienen hijos, cenas tranquilas entre amigos o vayan al teatro los sábados por la noche, han perdido la inspiración, están haciendo el ridículo y deberían retirarse a la mansa y anónima comodidad de sus hogares. Esto a veces es cierto y a veces no, como en el caso de Calamaro, que este año, luego de una carrera con picos más altos que bajos, con más de treinta discos, con casi todos los reconocimientos artísticos posibles en su haber y con una flamante familia a su lado, acaba de cumplir 30 años de militancia musical".

Otra parte interesante de la nota está relacionada con sus inicios y con la devoción al más grande todos los tiempos Jim Morrinson (en lo personal lo sigo considerando).

"En los Abuelos de la Nada, la vida de Calamaro se dispara. Miguel Abuelo, líder y cantante del grupo, se convierte en su maestro y amigo (Calamaro no se cansará nunca de homenajearlo, tanto en sus canciones como en sus declaraciones públicas). La genialidad musical y, aún más, el filón poético de las letras de las canciones de Abuelo calan hondo en el Andrés -amateur. La banda derrocha un carisma enorme y su popularidad crece vertiginosamente. La relación entre Abuelo y Calamaro gana confianza y cariño hasta el punto que a éste se le permite proponer canciones. Así nacen Sin Gamulan y Mil Horas, himnos fundantes del rock latinoamericano. Esto envalentona a Calamaro que, en 1984, sin dejar a Los Abuelos, de la mano de Charly García como productor, se lanza a la caza de su carrera como solista con Hotel Calamaro (primera referencia evidente a su ídolo del momento, Jim Morrinson, y al quinto disco de The Doors, llamado Morrinson Hotel).

Y en la entrevista que Calamaro responde a Mundo Diners, destaco la siguiente pregunta:

MD: Según tú, ¿cuál sería la alineación ideal de la mejor banda de rock de la historia?.
AC: Lynird Skinyrd antes del accidente o los X-pensive Winos (de Keith Richards).. La banda de Muddy Watters de los sesenta, con Willy Dixon. Hay muchas bandas que ya fueron la mejor banda de la historia.

Y para finalizar esta breve reseña, felicitar a Mundo Diners, no es la primera vez que realizan un magnífico trabajo relacionado con la música, hace pocas semanas, los especialistas de The Wildchildren resaltaron la nota sobre "La historia del rock" publicada por la misma revista en la edición de agosto del presente año.

Much of the Arab World seems to me (an American) to be obsessed with Shakespeare!  Yes, I do think there is a place for Shakespeare in the literature curriculum, but I think it is being entirely overdone.  I think one or (certainly not more than three) Shakespeare plays should be included in the curriculum, but other time should be spent on more interesting and valuable literature.

I spoke with some British friends I have who told me that British children are started on reading Shakespeare at age 11!  When I asked what for, one of them finally told me that knowledge of Shakespeare is used as an adult mainly to impress other adults.  OK, I'm American, and I find much of the language terribly hard to understand.  I really can't see it being useful to most people to learn much of this sort of antiquidated language.  Yet, throughout the Arab World, so many university programs seem to focus on extensive reading of Shakespeare!

About fifteen years ago, I had a friend from Libya.  He went on and on about how when he was in school, they had performed Shakespeare's plays in Arabic, using all the correct classical Arabic endings for words (as opposed to using the local dialet of Arabic).   People in my present country have told me similar things.

Where I live now, I often have country nationals who have earned university degrees in English (as a second or third language) talk to me about how they read a lot of Shakespeare in university.  At the same time, their command of ordinary English vocabulary is often lacking.  Some of them cannot write clear English sentences.  Wouldn't the time spend studying Shakespeare be better spent in English composition classes, and/or reading literature that uses language currently used, particularly when they are subsequently in jobs requiring a good command of English?

The first edition of Campus Party Iberoamérica will open in San Salvador on Tuesday, 28 October, ending 1 November. Campus Party began in Spain in 1997 with the aim of bringing together young people passionate for the Internet and new technologies "necessary to improve social conditions and develop their countries through innovation and digital inclusion." There have since been 12 editions of this conference but this will be the first to provide funding for the attendance of 600+ invitees from 22 countries. Speakers will include Mexican film maker Alfonso Cuarón, Brazilian astronaut Marco Pontes, and Spanish video game designer Gonzo Suárez. Read more here and here.

Campus Party Iberoamérica is held in conjunction with 28th Ibero-American Summit which this year will focus on "Youth and Development." Secretary General Enrique Iglesias will preside. Filmmakers are meeting in Mexico for the 1st Congress on Ibero-American Culture to prepare and brainstorm ways to better compete with the film industry of the United States. El Economista discusses the economic strength of the festival for the city known for drug crime. Also ongoing until the 12th is the Boston Latin International Film Festival (The Bostonist). El Festival de Cine de Quito Cero Latitud ("Latitude Zero") opens in Ecuador for its sixth edition this week running from through 9-19 October. It will showcase more than 200 feature length and short films from Latin America including Carlos Reygadas' Stellet Licht and Jonás Cuarón's Año uña. Read more.

Na een bezoekje aan de universiteit van Quito zijn we dan naar het midden van de wereld getrokken, waar het monument eigenlijk 250m verkeerd staat, maar waar je in het museum ernaast wel allerlei al-of-niet-getruceerde proevetjes kan doen met eieren op nagels, krachtoefeningen en weglopend water in een pompbak... Btw, kan iemand eens controleren of het water in België tegen de wijzers in wegloopt als je de stop uittrekt?? Hier is het in elk geval in wijzerzin ;-)

So kam ich mir diese Woche vor, als ich vergeblich versucht habe, nach Cambugan zu "reisen".
Am Montag hab ich den Versuch gar nicht ernsthaft unternommen, da ich einfach immernoch ueberhauptnicht fit war. Dafuer hab ich Montag Abend gedacht: "Eigentlich hab ich ja nur noch Durchfall, da koennt ich morgen schon gehen." Also hab ich meine Lehrerin "Ximena" angerufen und ihr Bescheid gesagt. Aber so richtig gut gings mir eigentlich nicht. Da hab ich dann nach langem Ueberlegen ihr eine SMS geschrieben, dass ich doch noch nicht mitkomm. War wohl auch besser so. Hab stattdessen einen gechillten Tag mit Maike und Sophia auf dem Sofa verbracht.
Am Dienstag hab ich mir wieder gedacht: "Eigentlich hab ich ja nur noch Durchfall, da koennt ich morgen schon gehen." Also hab ich wieder meine Lehrerin "Ximena" angerufen und ihr Bescheid gesagt. Die war glaub ich schon leicht genervt von mir, und ich will nicht neben ihr gestanden haben, also ich ihr dann Mittwoch morgen um 6 Uhr (ich hatte schon geduscht und alles, weil ich ja wirklich gehen wollte) eine SMS geschrieben hab, dass es mir doch wieder schlechter geht. Das stimmte ja auch. Der doofe Durchfall! Ich glaub ich waer nichtmal heil in Cambugan angekommen....
Mittwochnacht habe ich dann noch komische Bauchschmerzen bekommen. Immer so ein komisches Stechen das kommt und geht wie es Lust hat. Da hab ich dann beschlossen, auch am Donnerstag nicht in meine Cominudad zu reisen.
Ja und da die Bauchschmerzen Freitagmorgen immernoch da waren und mir die "Reise" nach Cambugan einfach wirklich zu lang und zu anstrengend war, bin ich auch am Freitag nicht wirklich gross aus Otavalo rausgekommen...
Der einzige Trost war nur, dass es Anneke und Maike auch nicht wirklich geschafft haben. Beide haben zwar mal den Versuch unternommen, wieder in ihre Comunidad zu gehen, sind aber beide mittags total frustriert wieder heimgekommen :-).

Aber ist ja nicht so, dass ich in dieser Woche nichts spannendes erlebt habe. Nachdem die Tabletten mal ueberhaupt nicht angeschlagen haben und wir uns immernoch so schlecht gefuehlt haben, sind wir am Dienstag  auf Celias Rat in eine Apotheke gegangen und haben mal nachgefragt, was das denn so fuer Medikamente waren. Was die uns daraufhin erzaehlt haben, hat uns wirkich fast umgehauen. Die einen Tabletten waren fuer Kinder bis 12 Jahren, die anderen waren zwar gar nicht schlecht, aber davon haette man 2 Stueck nehmen muessen, weil 1 bringt ueberhaupt nichts. Und Sophia hat sogar Antibiotika gegen Halsschmerzen bekommen!!! Wow, oder? Wir waren total baff. Die haben auch gemeint, dass in den Ergebnissen von den Tests total die Widersprueche drinwaren und haben uns erstmal zu einem Arzt nebenan geschickt. Da sass ich dann mit Maike und Sophia und hab dem Arzt unsre Situation erklaert. Irgendwann kamen noch Laura und Anneke, die ja auch Amoeben haben. So sassen wir zu 5 vor dem und er hat uns nochmal erklaert, was das fuer Quatschmedikamente sind. Er hat auch gemeint, dass der Arzt nicht mal das Recht dazu hat, Medikamente zu verkaufen, es aber trotzdem gemacht hat! Er hat uns also nochmal Medikamente aufgeschrieben, gegen Amoeben und so was, die wohl besser seien... Naja, so richtig ueberzeugt von denen bin ich ja immernochnicht.

Zwischenzeitlich kam dann sogar richtig Aufregung in unser sonst so einseitigen Alltag. Als wir am Mittwochmittag die Amoebentabletten genommen haben, hat Anneke kurz darauf gemeint, die kann total schwer Atmen. Kurze Zeit spaeter lag sie dann am Sofa und ich hab wirklich gedacht de stirbt gleich. Irgendwie hat ihr total die Lunge wehgetan und der Hals und de Ohren und sie konnte kaum mehr Atmen. Als es bisschen besser war sind wir zu einem Arzt gefahren und haben uns ins Wartezimmer gesetzt. Als wir da dann so sassen, und gewartet haben wars auf einmal wieder gut. Naja, dann sind wir eben wieder gegangen :-). War wohl eine Ueberreaktion oder so was. Keine Ahnung.

Donnerstag lief eigentlich nicht anders ab, als all die anderen Tage davor. Nur langsam sind wir wirklich verrueckt geworden, in dem Haus. Nach einer kurzen Runde Ligretto (das Spiel war Maike zu schnell) und 3 Runden Schiffe versenken (ich hab Anneke 3 mal besiegt) sassen wir wieder gelangweilt auf unserem Sofa. So ganz ohne Fernseh und so wird einem schon irgendwann mal langweilig. Ploetzlich ist Anneke wie von der Tarantel gestochen aufgesprungen und hat gemeint: "AAAAHHHHH! DER MUELL!" Ja, da hab ich es auch gehoert. Das mittlerweile allseitsbekannte Glockenspielgebimmel des Muellautos. Also sind wir losgerannt, haben unsere 6 Muellsaecke geschnappt und auf die Strasse rausgestellt. Maike kam langsam hinterhergetrottet: "Den Biomuell auch?" Nein, natuerlich nicht. Biomuell ist doch nur Montag, Mittwoch und Freitag. Und Restmuell Dienstag, Donnerstag und Samstag. Kann man sich doch ganz leicht merken oder? Dann standen wir da also auf der Strasse und haben zugeschaut, wie die Strassenhunde gerade die Muellsaecke von unserem Nachbarn zerfetzt haben und da wir nicht unser ganzes Klopapier am naechsten Tag von der Strasse aufsammeln wollten, haben wir uns einfach auf den Randstein gesetzt, und unsre Muellsaecke bewacht. Das muss total komisch ausgesehen haben, wie so 3 gringas (Auslaender) in ihren gestreiften Chillerhosen auf der Strasse sitzen und den Muell bewachen, denn schon kamen die Nachbarn aus ihrem Haus gelaufen, haben uns froehlich angegrinst und schon kamen wir ins Gespraech. Das kleine Maedchen war schon total geschaeftstuechtig und meinte gleich als erstes: "Falls ihr mal telefonieren wollt, wir haben bei uns im Haus Cabinas, von denen ihr zu Hause anrufen koennt!" :-) Alles klar!

Am Freitag bin ich mit Anneke um 6 Uhr aufgestanden, weil sie in ihre Gemeine nach Gualapuro zurueckwollte und ich mir gedacht hab, das ist doch die perfekte Gelegenheit um mal mitzukommen. Gualapuro ist auch echt nicht weit, da bin ich schon fast ein bisschen neidisch geworden. Man setzt sich in den Bus, nach 10 minuten steigt man aus und laeuft nochmal 10 minuten bergauf, und schon steht man mitten in dem kleinen Doerfchen. Nur konnt ich das leider nicht so richtig geniessen, weil ich einfach schon wieder total fertig war und mich nur hinsetzten wollte. Sind gleich mal zur Schule gelaufen. Die besteht aus mehr oder weniger einem Klassenraum mit 15 Schuelern. Das hoert sich total wenig an. Naja, ist es auch, aber in die Schule gehen auch nur 1. und 2. nivél. Aber es war wirklich schoen mal was anderes zu sehen. Und eigentlich gings mir ja auch gut, ausser dass ich irgendwann aufs Klo musste und es grad kein Wasser gab. Das passiert hier oefters. Dann kommt einfach mal eine Woche kein Wasser. War in meinem Fall nur etwas unguenstig :-) Aber auch das haben wir hinbekommen. Abgesehen davon war ja auch alles gut, ausser dass ich einfach sooo fertig und muede war. Ich bin nur von einem Stuhl zum naechsten gelaufen und wollte nur sitzen. Richtig Unterricht ar an dem Tag eh nicht, weil die Schule geputzt werden musste. Heute war naemlich jemand da, um die Schule anzuschauen, ob sie verstaatlicht wird. Dann wuerden die Kinder wie in Cambugan jeden morgen Colada (Milchgemisch) und nach der Schule essen vom Staat bekommen. Wichtig war das fuer alle hier auch, weil die Schule von Cielo Azul aufgebaut wurde!
Nach der Schule haben wir noch in Annekes Familie Mittaggegessen. Das heisst, ich hab mehr aus Anstand in meinem Teller rumgeloeffelt und Anneke hat dann noch den Rest von mir gegessen. War aber wirklich lecker. Gab Reis mit Bohnen! Achja, und die Carpinteria (Schreinerei) haben wir auch noch besucht. Die ist genau gegenueber von Annekes Haus. Da arbeitet auch eine Freiwillige von Cielo Azul, die Cornelia. Die Schreinerei macht dann immer Tische und Stuehle fuer die Schulen.

Ja, das war so ziemlich alles, was in meiner spannenden Woche passiert ist. Heute war ich nochmal in einem Labor, diesmal in dem Gegenueber von dem alten, um zu sehen, ob die Amoeben denn auch wirklich weg sind, weil ich einfach immernoch komische Bauchschmerzen ab und zu hab. Aber ich muss sagen, man gewoehnt sich daran. Es war schon wesentlich schlimmer. Eigentlich ist es im Moment ja schon fast normal :-). Achja, der eineArzt hat noch gemeint, ich soll nochmal Amoebentabletten nehmen, bevor ich zurueckgeh, damit ich euch nicht auch alle ansteck. Aber das muss ich mir doch noch schwer ueberlegen, ob ich das machen soll.... Kommt natuerlich ganz drauf an, ob ihr lieb seit und mir immer ganz viel schreibt. Wenn nicht, bring ich euch ein paar von den lieben Tierchen mit nach Deutschland. Ist sogar kostenlos fuer euch :-).....

Oh, gibt schon Neuigkeiten. War gerade nochmal bei einem anderen Arzt, um meine neuen Laborergebnisse checken zu lasse. Ich hab zwar keine Amoeben mehr, dafuer aber eine Infektion. Das heisst, ich muss Antibiotika nehmen und ne ganz komische Diaet einhalten. Dabei hab ich mich heute schon so auf ne Lasagne mit richtig viel Kaese gefreut... Er hat nur gemeint, er weiss dass wir nicht gerne Antibiotika nehmen, aber wir sind hier in Ecuador und nicht in Deutschland und wenn ich das nicht nehm, dann kann es sein, dass ich als naechstes nach Quito ins Krankenhaus muss... Und die letzten volontaere, die sich dagegen gewehrt haben, denen gings wohl auf die Dauer auch nicht wirklich gut. Naja, dann glaub ich das eben mal. Werd gleich mal meine Saefte und Kraecker und Zeug kaufen und dann eben den Abend wieder nur komisches Zeug essen. Wenigstens werd ich so nicht dick und fett. Stephi hat zumindest schon gemeint, dass ich abgenommen hab. Ist ja auch kein Wunder, ich ess ja auch fast nichts mehr...

Ecuador und die Anden bilden das wunderbare Dekor für dieses Roadmovie, in dem zwei junge Frauen unterwegs sind nach Cuenca, der friedlichen Gartenstadt im Süden. Esperanza kommt aus Spanien und reist durch Ecuador auf der Suche nach Entdeckungen. Tristeza lebt in Quito, der Hauptstadt Ecuadors, und ist ebenfalls unterwegs. Die beiden lernen sich durch Zufall im Bus kennen und durchqueren die halluzinierende Bergwelt Ecuadors.

Que tan lejos ist eine ecuadorianische Redewendung um zu sagen: Wie weit noch? Der ausgesprochen sanfte Film zeigt, dass sich ein Land am besten neben den Postkartenbildern entdecken lässt, durch Wachheit auf das, was sich einem zeigen kann.

Diplomatieke breuk
Het Colombiaanse leger vond de 45 bestanden op de computer van Paul Reyes, de nummer twee van de Farc, nadat het Reyes op 1 maart had gedood bij een operatie op Ecuadoraans grondgebied. De operatie leidde tot een breuk in de diplomatieke relaties tussen Quito en Bogota. Om de legitimiteit van de operatie te bewijzen, maakte Colombia de bestanden over aan Ecuador en Venezuela.

Kopieën
Volgens Santiago Acurio, verantwoordelijke op de informatica-afdeling van het Ecuadoraanse openbaar ministerie, werden de zogenaamde bewijzen gemanipuleerd. Deskundig onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat de documenten een latere datum bevatten dan 1 maart, dag van de dood van Reyes. Dat bewijst dat het om kopieën gaat en dat de authenticiteit van de documenten niet kan worden gegarandeerd, aldus Acurio.

Geen juridische waarde
Gisteren bracht de Spaanse radio Cadena Ser het bestaan van een rapport aan het licht waarin staat dat "de computer van Reyes werd gemanipuleerd door het Colombiaanse leger". Los van het feit of de inhoud al dan niet gemanipuleerd werd, hebben de door Colombia geleverde bewijzen ook geen juridische waarde, aldus Acurio.

Interpol
Op 15 mei had Interpol wel "de authenticiteit" van de archieven bevestigd. Maar volgens de Ecaduoraanse autoriteiten heeft Interpol er zich niet van vergewist of de computers waarop de archieven stonden, zich wel degelijk in het kampement van Reyes bevonden en aan hem toebehoorden.

Ik zou de thalys naar Schiphol nemen, maar die was op het laatste moment overboekt. Dan maar met de stoptrein naar de luchthaven.  Eenmaal in Schiphol aangekomen kreeg ik te horen dat mijn vlucht ook overboekt was. Even was er sprake van dat ik een nachtje in Amsterdam zou moeten slapen, maar uiteindelijk kreeg ik toch een zetel. Het viegtuig was een MD-11 van KLM, uitgerust met de laatste technologische snufjes. Elke stoel was voorzien van een flattscreen waar je een 200-tal videos kon bekijken, spelletjes op kon spelen, muziek beluisteren en zelfs emails en sms-en versturen tijdens de vlucht. Even een tussenlanding in Bonair en Guayaquil gemaakt en dan richting Quito. Wanneer we de evenaar passeerden, werd onze co-piloot gedoopt. Hij was verkleed in Neptunus en werd door het vliegtuig rondgereden op een karretje. Spectaculair.

In Quito de taxi naar de jeugdherberg 'Bleu House' genomen, vervolgens de buurt wat verkend en nadien een 'powernap' gedaan.

La crisi originata dai mutui subprime, non è soltanto crisi finanziaria. É superficiale continuare a condannare la finanza come come la peste del XXI secolo, attività autoreferenziale dominata dall’avidità dei suoi protagonisti, colpevolmente alimentata dall’ideologia liberista dell'autoregolazione dei mercati. I protagonisti della finanza hanno indubbiamente le loro colpe. Ma la crisi è economica e sociale. È crisi politica. Non solo per l’ampiezza delle conseguenze, ma per le sue cause. Arriva al capolinea un modello di crescita. Con esso, arriva al capolinea la legittimazione e la credibilità dei settori delle classi dirigenti della politica, dell’economia, delle accademie, dei media, che lo hanno alimentato e ne hanno beneficiato. Pertanto, non è particolarmente sorprendente che quasi la metà dei rappresentanti democratici e due terzi di quelli repubblicani si ribellino alle indicazioni delle loro leadership e affondino il Piano Paulson pur nella versione “controllata”. Per capire la portata di quanto avviene, dobbiamo domandarci se è un caso che la più grande crisi finanziaria della nostra epoca irrompe quando la distribuzione del reddito negli Stati Uniti torna a coincidere con quella degli anni ‘20 del secolo scorso, quella pre-New Deal.
