So much talk of privacy is in the news recently has us wondering: Is there really a difference between Google's privacy pundits and critics of ISP deep packet inspection (DPI) practices? They both want to collect, store, and profile your online behavior unbeknownst you. They both want to monetize your online actions. And they both desperately want to avoid congressional oversight.

The root of their similarity is the battle for the $30 billion annual online search market. In the case of Google, the company knows it can make even more money by storing online keystrokes, and watching your every move while your connected via their browser. The practice improves their targeting - and hence ad revenues. And the ISPs? They are doing the same thing, but intercepting the same data at the network layer.

Both actions are an incorrigible invasion of consumer privacy. Worst of all, neither ISPs nor goliath ad companies like Google have made any attempt to involve the end user in either scenario.

So here's a novel idea -- why don't either of these ad-trackers offer us something of value in return for our private and personal behavioral information? Maybe discounted service? Or features/functions/capabilities? Give us something in return! While you're at it, maybe they can grant us some ability to control what information is marketed on our behalf – so we end up with relevant offers.

Signing out, supremely frustrated by this industry's inability to self impose responsible means of marketing/advertising to it's most prized asset – it's customers.

A couple of recent tech headlines have caught my eye, and because of their dire implications, I thought I should pass them on to you.

Loyal readers may remember that a year ago now I wrote about the "day of protest" and the Internet Radio Equality Act which was vital to the future of free, public Internet radio and webcasters. (to read my article, click here.)

Today's title is premature, but not by much. The Copyright Royalty Board ruling that we were warned about is set to take effect. This is all about DRM and "protecting artists", and so an obscure Federal judge is going to change our current ability to listen to music. Forever.

"Pandora is one of the nation's most popular Web radio services, with about 1 million listeners daily. Its Music Genome Project allows customers to create stations tailored to their own tastes. It is one of the 10 most popular applications for Apple's iPhone and attracts 40,000 new customers a day. Yet the burgeoning company may be on the verge of collapse, according to its founder, and so may be others like it.

"We're approaching a pull-the-plug kind of decision," said Tim Westergren, who founded Pandora. "This is like a last stand for webcasting." "
To read the rest of this Washington Post article, click here.

Your ISP is spying on you:
The second headline probably really won't surprise anyone -- there's a lot of people watching our surfing habits, and developing profiles on us (for the purposes of bringing us "more relevant" ads). I almost ignored it, as the lead paragraph wasn't all that shocking..
"Cable One last fall conducted a six-month trial of a network-based technology that tracks consumers' Internet movements in an effort to amass refined data on Web-surfer habits that can be sold to advertisers at premium rates."

But I was intrigued.. what did they mean by "network technology"??? Then I did get shocked and alarmed.

Someone has decided that the firewall technology known as DPI ("deep packet inspection") may as well be used for full data mining of the traffic flowing through the service provider. Evil, evil someone.

You see, DPI is a method that can see through encryption. It is used for security purposes as it can read every word going over the wire and look for viruses and malware, and sensitive corporate data.

Basically, those Cable One customers had every word they typed read and recorded.. every website they visited.. and any attempts they made at maintaining their privacy (using proxies, anonymizers, or encryption) were foiled at the wire.
To read the whole article, click here.

It's for better advertising! Yay!
[Attention advertisers: Haven't you figured out that we ignore you? What do you think the mute button is for? The TiVo? AdBlocker software? Stop wasting your money! You've all been duped into believing a huge fallacy.]

Today's free link: is a repeat, it's the word "Pandora", above.

Although the debates surrounding net neutrality and user privacy are nothing new, the recent involve

Although the debates surrounding net neutrality and user privacy are nothing new, the recent involvement of the Federal Communications Commission is forcing ISPs and network administrators to rethink their strategies for network optimization. The potential benefits of layer-7 bandwidth shaping and deep packet inspection are coming into conflict with the rights of Internet users to surf the net unimpeded while maintaining their privacy.

Despite the obvious potential relationship between net neutrality, deep packet inspection and bandwidth shaping, the issues are not inherently intertwined and must be judged separately. This has been the outlook at APconnections since the development of the network optimization appliance NetEqualizer five years ago.

On the surface, net neutrality seems to be a reasonable and ultimately beneficial goal for the Internet. In a perfect world, all consumers would be able to use the Internet to the extent they saw fit, absent of any bandwidth regulation. However, that perfect world does not exist.

In many cases, net neutrality can become a threat to equal access. Whether this is true for larger ISPs is debatable, however it cannot be denied when considering the circumstances surrounding smaller Internet providers. For example, administrators at rural ISPs, libraries, universities, and businesses often have no choice but to implement bandwidth shaping in order to ensure both reliable service and their own survival. When budgets allow only a certain amount of bandwidth to be purchased, once that supply is depleted, oftentimes due to the heavy usage of a small number of users, options are limited. Shaping in no longer a choice, but a necessity.

However, this does not mean that a free pass should be given for Internet providers to accomplish network optimization through any means available even at the expense of customer privacy. This is especially true considering that it’s possible to achieve network optimization without compromising privacy or equal access to the Internet. The NetEqualizer is a proven example.

Rather than relying on techniques such as deep packet inspection, NetEqualizer regulates bandwidth usage by connection limits and, through its fairness algorithm, ensures that all users are given equal access when the network is congested (Click here for a more detailed explanation of the NetEqualizer technology).

Therefore, a heavy bandwidth user that might be slowing Internet access for other customers can be kept in check without having to actually examine or completely block the data that is being sent. The end result is that the large majority of users will be able to access the Internet unhindered, while the privacy of all users is protected.

In the midst of the ongoing debates over net neutrality and privacy, the NetEqualizer approach is gaining popularity. This is apparent in both an increase in sales as well as on message boards and forums across the Internet. A recent Broadband Reports post reads:

“I don't think anyone's going to argue with you if you're simply prioritizing real time traffic over non-real time. Just so long as you're agnostic as to who's sending the traffic, not making deals behind people's backs, etc. then I'd have no problem with my ISP letting me surf the web or e-mail or stream at full speed, even if it meant that, when another person was doing the same, I could only get 100 KBs on a torrent instead of 150.

“I'd much rather have a NetEq'd open connection than a NATed nonmanaged one, that's for sure.”

It is this agnostic approach that differentiates NetEqualizer from other network optimization appliances. While network administrators are able to prioritize applications such as VoIP in order to prevent latency, other activity, such as BitTorrent, is still able to take place – just at a slower speed when the network is congested. This is all done without deep packet inspection.

“NetEqualizer never opens up any customer data and thus cannot be accused of spying. Connections are treated as a metered resource,” said Art Reisman, CEO of APconnections. “The ISPs that use NetEqualizer simply put a policy in their service contracts stating how many connections they support, end of story. BitTorrent is still allowed to run, albeit not as wide with unlimited connections.”

Although not a proponent of bandwidth shaping, TorrentFreak.com editor-in-chief and founder Ernesto differentiates NetEqualizer from other bandwidth shaping appliances.

“I am not a fan of bandwidth control, the correct solution is for providers to build out more capacity by reinvesting their profits, however I'll concede a solution such as a NetEqualizer is much more palatable than redirecting or specially blocking bittorrent and also seems to be more acceptable to consumers than bandwidth caps or metered plans.

“There is a risk though, who decides what the ‘peaks times’ are, how much bandwidth / connections would that be? Let me reiterate, I would rather see that ISPs invest in network capacity than network managing hardware.

“The Internet is growing rapidly, and if networks ‘crash’ already, they are clearly doing something wrong.”

The ultimate capacity of individual networks will vary on a case-by-case basis, with some having little choice but to employ bandwidth shaping and others doing so for reasons other than necessity. It has never been the intention of APconnections to pass judgment on how or why users implement shaping technology. The NetEqualizer is simply providing a bandwidth optimization alternative to deep packet inspection that gives administrators the opportunity to manage their networks with respect to both net neutrality and customer privacy.

These settings differ depending on whether you have an LCD or a CRT monitor. For both type of monitors, it's typical that the higher the dots per inch (DPI), the better the fonts will look.

The best display for an LCD monitor

If you have an LCD monitor, check your screen resolution, which helps to determine the clarity of on-screen images and objects. It's a good practice to set LCD monitors to the native resolution—the resolution a monitor was designed to display best, based on its size. The monitor manufacturer or reseller should be able to provide the native resolution. If you can't get this information, you can try setting the monitor to the highest available resolution, which is usually the native resolution.

LCD monitors can technically support lower resolutions than their native resolution, but the image might be small, centered on the screen, and edged with black; or the image will look stretched.

Correct monitor flicker.Another consideration in getting the best possible display from your monitor is the screen refresh rate. If the refresh rate is too low, the monitor can flicker, which can cause eye strain and headaches. You should select a refresh rate of at least 75 Hertz.

The best display for a CRT monitor

For a CRT monitor, it's important to change the screen resolution to the highest resolution available that gives 32-bit color and at least a 72-Hertz refresh rate.If the screen is flickering, or viewing the screen is uncomfortable, increase the refresh rate until you are comfortable with it.

Resolution based on monitor size

Monitor size Recommended resolution

15-inch monitor 1024 × 768

17- to 19-inch monitor 1280 × 1024

20-inch and larger monitor1600 × 1200

Set the color for a CRT monitor

Windows colors and themes work best when you have your monitor set to 32-bit color. You can set your monitor to 24-bit color, but you won't see all the visual effects. If you set your monitor to 16-bit color, images that should be smooth might not appear correctly.

Warning : you must be have good experience to do it and know how to back up if the changing was fail and damaged your engine.some monitor doesn't support configuration.

Noriu parašyti šį straipsniuką visiems nenutuokiantiems apie nuotraukų subtilybes, o ypač savo

Noriu parašyti šį straipsniuką visiems nenutuokiantiems apie nuotraukų subtilybes, o ypač savo klientams bei ketinantiems pateikti medžiagą spaudos leidiniui maketuoti.

Nuotraukų, paveikslėlių ar grafinių vaizdinių formatai yra šie: pagrindinis - .JPEG; .TIFF; .PNG; .GIF; .BMP

Spaudai idealu naudoti .TIFF formato nuotraukas, kadangi TIFF formato vaizdinys apie visų pradinio vaizdo taškų spalvas išsaugo 100 procentų. Be to akivaizdžiai matoma kokybė.

Vadinasi kliento prioritetas tokias nuotraukas įsigyti nusiperkant bei kartu su nuotrauka gaunant teisę bei leidimą jas naudoti asmeniniams bei komerciniams tikslams.

Geriau to net nemėginkite daryti.

Apie spalvas šiek tiek.

Jei ekrane, nuotraukoje matote gražias, ryškias spalvas tai nereiškia, kad tokios spalvos bus atspausdintame leidinyje. Ekrane vaizdus jūs matote RGB spalvų paletėje, o spausdinama CMYK spalvų paletėje. Pavertus RGB į CMYK visas spalvas gausite šiek tiek priblankintas, t.y. bus ne tokios ryškios ir gražios, nes CMYK spalvas šiek tiek užgniaužia.

Nemokamos nuotraukų tvarkymo programos:

No, this isn't a rant about how there are too many emo kids posting a bunch of useless fucking photos on "art" websites. This post is about deep packet injection and traffic throttling. Don't get me wrong, those emo kids still piss me the fuck off... Why the fuck is THIS photo available as a print on deviantART? (especially for $149?!?!?!?! YOUR KILLING ART [and you need to comb your hair]).

Back to the real topics at hand, lets start with deep packet injection. "What is deep packet injection?", I hear you ask. To sum it up, DPI is the act of inserting information into an open network connection without the knowledge of the server (the technical thingy that hosts the website you visit) and in most times without the consent of the client (your computer and untimely you). Now that you kind of know what it is, you might be wondering why its bad. Well, deep packet injection allows the person (or internet service provider) to place code or advertisements into a webpage you view. This could be advertisements, cookies (for tracking a users internet usage), or even information manipulation.

DPI raises a lot of concerns about copyright, privacy, and net neutrality. Companies like Phorm already implement DPI technology and are trying to work on deals with ISPs to provide targeted advertising to end users... This means they do it without YOUR permission. Why is this bad? Lets just ignore the fact that Phorm is the new name for a company called 121media, a spyware company. Lets look at it from a content providers point of view...

Most websites that provide free content generate revenue through advertising. This means that a large number of people actually click on the ads (like Google adsense) displayed on pages, these clicks give the content provider money to provide more content (HOORAY). Lets say you run a website, you've spent a lot of time and money building up your website and content... you're starting to get hits and the money is starting to roll in, you might even break even with the cost of your investment soon. Along comes packet injecting ISP and all of a sudden 30% of your Canadian visitors (lets say Canada is your biggest demographic) are victims of packet injection. This ISP starts inserting its own ads into your website and people start clicking those ads instead of yours, now your ad revenue drops by 25% because the ISPs ads are getting more clicks. The ISP is modifying and making money from your website without your permission. Now your site looks ugly, 30% of your users see a website with twice as many ads and they loose interest. All of this happens without you giving permission to a 3rd party ISP and without the end user agreeing to their ISP doing this.

Some of you might be thinking some kind of bullshit like "they serve the internet, they can do whatever they want". Well you can shut the fuck up, you don't deserve to use the internet you dumb shit. You see, for any normal person to do widespread packet injection would most likely land that person in jail if they were caught... say for instance if I decided to do some widespread packet injection that added "Rogers Communications can suck my heat seeking moisture missile until it blows" in big bold letters on every website, I'd go to jail for hacking. If Rogers does it (and they have been doing DPI), nothing happens to them. Why the fuck should a cooperation be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want and the only punishment be either a cease-and-desist from a court or a fine... The people that make these decisions should be put in fucking jail! The people that run a cooperation need to be held responsible for the actions THEY take, not gain automatic immunity because "the cooperation" as legal entity did it.

Fuck, its 1:40 AM and I havnt even touched traffic throttaling (Bell Canada) and DNS Hijacking (Rogers). Oh well, I guess that means I have topics for another day... my readers (all both of you guys) will have to wait.

Rozdzielczość a jakość

Jaka rozdzielczość drukarki będzie optymalną do zastosowań związanych z wydrukiem tekstu?

Two things to share with you today.

First up, Mozilla just released Mozilla Firefox 3. It's free to download at their site. Aside from all the new features, one cool thing about this is that it supports color management. How will this work? Simple, follow the 2 steps below:

Step 1: Install the Color Management add-on. Once installed, enabling and disabling color management is as simple as checking a checkbox and relaunching Firefox 3.

Step 2: Manually edit the color management setting. The steps are:

Type about:config in Firefox 3's address bar and press Return. The configuration settings will appear.

In the Filter field, type gfx. The list of settings will shorten to show just those related to graphics, i.e. gfx.

If the Value for gfx.color_management.enabled is False, double-click anywhere on that line to toggle the setting to True.

Quit and relaunch Firefox 3.

To confirm that color management is working, check out the photos on this page. If all four quadrants of the first photo are a seamless match, then colour management in your copy of Firefox is up and running.

Thanks to Rob Galbraith's post for the news.

Second, ever wondered what the differences are between DPI and PPI? I'm sure you've seen PPI (pixels-per-inch) in Photoshop and DPI (dots-per-inch) in printers (and even your monitor display resolution) and you always wondered how this will impact the photos you're editing both for online publishing and printing. Well, here's an article from tildefrugal.net on that explains both DPI and PPI. I hope it's helpful to you, it sure is helpful to me! :)

Internet Throttling has been in the news quite a bit lately, with Bell Canada being sued by Quebec

Internet Throttling has been in the news quite a bit lately, with Bell Canada being sued by Quebec's consumer watchdog for the practise. Bell has been practising the voodoo art of Deep Packet Inspection, throttling peer to peer file sharing during peak hours. This heresy was enough to drag 300 pasty skin net citizens to surface and protest in the light of day on Parliament Hill. Bell for its part has said this was necessary to prevent speed slow down for about 700,000 customers. Now this might have been easier to stomach if they had been actually rolling adequate funds into infrastructure, being proactive rather than reactive, and the fact Bell had not just introduce a pay for movie down load service. On one hand Bell claims traffic congestion and on the other hand they roll out a movie down load service, something smells. But really what should have all internet users concerned is the use of Deep Packet Inspections (DPI). This refers to the ability to inspect the contents of the bit of information called packets that flow around the internet and drill into the packet to tell whether it is email from me or a video that originated at youtube.com. This technology is commonly used for traffic shaping, but can also be used to collect specific information and reassemble that information right down to individual email traffic. Now anyone that is surprised that internet traffic can be monitored and recovered should shake their heads. But what is discouraging is that it is creeping into every day business society and being used to boost profits rather than provide adequate services. This does not bode well for the consumer or net neutrality. My last point is for us the consumer, if we treated forests like we treat our internet resources, Green Peace would be ramming our laptops with their ships. With the explosion of bandwidth hungry applications we continued to eat up the capacity of the Internet, we have depleted our net resources quicker than we ever managed to do on terra firma. Video and file sharing, movie down loading continue to eat up bandwidth, content rich social media sites all make demands on the infrastructure of the internet. Youtube has 10 billion videos viewed monthly, social media sites and networking site have multi millions of members and we as consumers have to start asking how much of it is necessary and serves a positive purpose. Most of what we do on the web has no social or personal enriching component and is centered around voyeurism or semi-anonymous self expression. These fads far out way the positive use of the internet and consume much of the available internet resources. We as consumers may have to start controlling our appetites for online media, before big ISP’s start doing it for us, by hitting our wallet.

Per the message below, HumanWare will be live at the Junior Blind of America to present some of its new products as well as some of its standard products.

While this is for Southern California, we wish to share the presentation through Talking Communities. Both voice and/or typed questions will not be handled during this presentation as it is a Southern California (CCB/HumanWare collaboration.

We do hope that some of you will listen in at 11 a.m. this Saturday Pacific Daylight Time.

Best,

Ken Metz

Dear DPI Computer Users Group Member,

Humanware will present a new GPS device, the Trekker Breeze, from 11:00 AM until 0200 PM on Saturday June 7, 2008. All of the Humanware products will be presented, and persons who are present will have an opportunity to ask questions and have a chance at a hands-on demonstration of all of the products.

The presentation will be held in the cafeteria of the Junior Blind of America. Sandwiches, light snacks, and sodas will be provided by Humanware.

If you are coming on Access, plan to arrive by 10:45 or earlier. If you are coming on Access, you will need to schedule your drop-off for the back gate which is at the rear of the Junior Blind at the corner of Alviso and 54th. Pickups should also be scheduled on or after 2:15 PM from the back gate. If you have a cell phone, it is a good idea to give that as a callout number.

If you need it for Access, the main address for Junior Blind of America is 5300 Angeles Vista Blvd. in the View Park area of Los Angeles. The nearest large cross streets are Angeles Vista and Valley Ridge.

When you arrive at the back gate, dial 111 so that dorm staff can let you in.

For those of you who will be accessing from a remote location using a computer, we will arrive by 10:00 Saturday morning, so we will be ready to test the online conference room by 10:15. This presentation will be Broadcast Only; this means that you can listen from a remote location, but you will not be able to submit questions. Following are instructions for accessing the Talking Communities Meeting Room. If you log in on Saturday morning, start at

10:15 or so so that you will be sure that you can hear the broadcast.

When you click on the direct room link listed below, you are taken to

the initial sign-in screen where you simply select the download client

button.

If you already have it on your computer, you can skip this part. If an

update is required, however, you will want to download it. There would

be no need to uninstall a prior version as the most current software

will install over the older version. When the installation is complete

(requiring only a minute or less), you should then run the program. When

that is finished, you will again be in the original sign-in screen. Tab

to the enter room button and press Enter.

Enter your name, and non-moderators should then tab past the password

field, and press enter on the log in button. That's it.

Disabled Peoples’ International (DPI) North America and the Caribbean (NAC) has released a gui

Disabled Peoples' International (DPI) North America and the Caribbean (NAC) has released a guide that can be used to educate the general public about disability etiquette and the disability rights movement. The 33-page booklet, entitled Equal Opportunities for All: Respecting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (PDF format 551 Kb), is targeted at people in the North American and Caribbean regions who are new to disability. But most of its information is broad enough that it may be useful for people in other regions as well.

International development professionals new to disability issues may find this guide helpful in answering questions they were too embarassed to ask disability advocates directly. Disability advocates may find the booklet's simple, accessible language and clear information helpful in their public outreach campaigns.

The booklet defines "disability"; describes what a "barrier free" world would look like; and recommends appropriate language to use when referring to people with disabilities. It also shares basic advice for etiquette useful for people who have little to no prior experience interacting with disabled people. For example, it encourages readers to speak directly to a person with disabilities--not to their friend, aide, or interpreter. It also shares more specific advice for interacting with people who are blind; deaf; have specific learning disabilities; have intellectual disabilities; use a wheelchair; or who have psycho-social (psychiatric) disabilities.

Subsequent sections of the booklet tackle topics such as mainstreaming in education; how to make schools, places of employment, and the community more accessible; and the new Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The guide presents arguments for why everyone (not just people with disabilities) should care about accessibility.

People unfamiliar with the disability-oriented resources available in the Caribbean region will want to turn to this booklet's listing of organizations and schools in Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. (Want to find more disability-related organizations? Try checking other We Can Do posts that point to specific organizations or to resources for finding them.)

A glossary in the back helps people new to disability issues understand basic terminology such as "accommodation."

You can download the booklet (PDF format, 551 Kb) at:

The authorities of the institution, which is owned by the government but was so long administered and managed by the Sisters through the Darjeeling Loreto Educational Society, have maintained that the decision to let go was taken because of a shortfall in manpower.

“The time to bid farewell and express our gratitude to the Darjeeling Loreto Educational Society has arrived. It is a day we never thought would come. Loreto has seen us through 47 glorious years. She has nurtured us, strengthened us, has instilled in us her vision, values and spirit,” reads a message that the staff-members of the college are sending to all well-wishers who want to attend the farewell programme on June 11.

Rinjee Wangdi, the teacher-in-charge of Loreto College, said: “The details of the handover is expected to be spelt out in the next governing body meeting. Sister M. Dsouza, the principal, is currently out of town.”

According to Wangdi, the director of public instruction (DPI) was scheduled to visit Darjeeling sometime back to work out the details. “Since they (DPI and his team) could not make it, I think they will fix up another date,” said Wangdi, who is expected to carry on in her post even after the handover because of Clause 7 of the North Bengal University statutory of 1985.

The clause states that the senior-most teacher has to be appointed the in-charge, in case the college does not have a principal.

With the change in guard, the college, too, will be renamed. The teachers had earlier suggested “Southfield”.

On the personal request of then chief minister B.C. Roy, the college was set up in 1961. From the eight students it had then, the college now has 400 girls and offers bachelor’s degree in the humanities stream.

Following the 1961 agreement, the Society was entrusted with appointing a Loreto sister as an honorary principal along with two teachers. The college was founded under the “special category” and apart from providing grants, the state government was also involved in the appointment of the remaining lecturers.

At present, the college has 25 government-appointed teachers along with five who work part time.
