So let me share with you my thoughts. Is it a revolutionary new gadget, one that will transform the reading experience of every man, woman and child on the planet? Or is it crap?

It was like Christmas morning when I browsed the online Waterstones shelves to chose my one free book…. and then I found the choice was, shall we say, limited. This morning there are 5902 titles on the e-book download list, and only 184 of these are children’s books. I appreciate that kids are probably unlikely to be the target audience for the Reader but I was slightly disappointed in the choices available. I’ve had a look at the bestseller list in the eBooks and compared them to the regular bestseller lists… and it’s completely different. Virtually none of the bestsellers are available as eBooks. I was also annoyed to find a number of out of copyright books, which are available to download free from places like Project Gutenburg for sale on the Waterstones eBook list, like The Patchwork Girl of Oz costing £2.53.

Nevertheless, I found a book that was on my to-be-read-list; The Bone Magician by F.E. Higgins. And here’s where I was even more disappointed – the price. Now I wasn’t paying, so it shouldn’t really have bothered me, but everyone else will have to - so it’s an issue. The hardback copy of The Bone Magician is on sale at Waterstones for £8.99 which I think is pretty reasonable - it’s a sumptuous, gorgeous hardback book. But a download is £7.19! No beauteous hardback cover in striking red and silver, no paper costs, no printing costs, no transportation of heavy tomes, no warehousing, no sale or return, no shop space costs, no pulping costs… need I go on? It would cost the amount of time it takes for a wee person, paid probably minimum wage, to sit in a room and type the thing out…ONCE! And I save only £1.80 ??? After forking out £200.00 for the machine to read it on? I’ve calculated, at that rate I would need to read over 111 books before I even got my money back on the hardware. So much for helping us save the planet.

Before you think this is some sort of negative review… there are some plusses, so hang in there.

The Sony Reader is extremely simple to get started and easy to work with, I had it up and running in no time. I plugged it into my laptop and installed all the software, then I was asked to sync it with my Adobe account and install the updates and things (I let it do all the difficult stuff itself) and I was ready. I had a lovely bookshelf on my computer now so I filled it with the books I got on the free CD - 100 classics, of which I had already read about 2, so that was a bonus! I then sat back to read The Bone Magician… and the screen came up with a stop sign and Protected Page! My book was gone! Seemingly, it’s something to do with it being a freebie and the DRM (Digital Rights Management) being assigned only to the person who sent me the machine and when I synched it with my own Adobe account I changed something… or something like that… (If you want to know more about this, Martyn Daniels (an expert in Digital Publishing) explained it to me on the Litopia Podcast: Corporate Publishing is Dead). But all was not lost, I still had my 100 free books to play with.

Okay, I’m going to rattle through the other negative things quickly, because I’m beginning to depress myself…

I’m not sure how it’s going to work for left-handers, since the controls are very much right-handed orientated.

If you’ve forgotten who a character is when you’re half way through the book, it isn’t easy to just flick back through the pages and find them – unless you know what number of page they appeared on it can be a pain in the backside.

Finding your books by Author is pretty useless, since they’re in alphabetical order by Christian Name. How daft is that? We all know authors by surname, when we do reviews we say Dickens, not Charles and Kipling not Rudyard, heck, some of them don’t even use their first names, only initials.

I hated the fact that it’s cold… freezing in fact. Books are warm, they’re comforting, they have a cosy, homely feel and a smell… I didn’t expect all of that, but I was shocked at how cold the metal was and how hard it seemed in my hand while I was reading.

Right, enough moaning. I hate moaning.

The Sony Reader is a breeze to work, it really is simple. You can start reading a book and get bored, wander off and start reading ten more and then when you come back you can begin reading where you left off the last time – your bookmark has never fallen out.

And you can bookmark interesting pages, without turning the corners down and spoiling the book.

The font is so easy on the eye and the grey background is brilliant. I never once felt my eyes tiring or straining as I read the text. You can also magnify the writing to a pretty large size, so anyone who has lost their reading glasses can still enjoy their book.

One of the things my mum pointed out was that she wants to read War and Peace but when she looked at the Large Print version of the book in the library, she knew there was no way she would be able to hold a book of that size. It’s a monster weight. But with the Reader, she can magnify the text to a readable size with no weight issues (and the huge font e-version of War and Peace runs to 7269 pages!).

I thought the formatting worked really well. For instance there’s an extract of The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak on the reader, and the book-book version of this has some non-standard formatting. In the e-book version, they use centred, bold text to give the same effect – I liked that.

The screen does flash black when you turn a page, but I didn’t find this distracting at all. It took me very little time to get used to it and it certainly didn’t impinge on my reading experience.

There are some other aspects of the machine that could be useful, once I work out how to work them. There’s an inbuilt music player, but since I’m really more of a silent reader I don’t think I’ll be using this function, since my iPod is about a hundred times smaller.

You can carry about 160 books on the Reader itself but there are Sony Memory Stick Duo™ or SD memory card slots to multiply this by as many as you like. Scott Pack has managed to get PDF and Word Documents on to his Reader and I shall, after a large glass of wine sometime, be trying this out. One of the things I would have really liked is to have is the ability to make notes. I know this may be a writer-person aspect, so I’m loathe to stress it since the Reader is essentially just that, for reading. But the Kindle from Amazon has a keyboard and the ability to make notes on the text. *whispers* I am a margin scribbler and a highlighter, especially in non-fiction books where I like to take note of the interesting bits, but don’t tell anyone - I know this is sacrilege. I like to highlight bits I want to quote and I like to make notes of themes and important aspects I want to mention in my reviews, but in the Reader I can only bookmark the page, my notes have to be made elsewhere. This would also be useful if I ever manage to upload my work onto it for editing purposes. But I don’t think the Sony Reader was intended for this purpose, although I can’t help thinking they’ve missed a trick here.

Another non-reading advantage is highlighted by Vanessa on The Fidra Blog (which you must all add to your feed-reader!). She says…

Publishers could email books, reps could download it onto my ereader while we were discussing other titles and exchanging scurrilous gossip and we wouldn’t end up with situations where proofs have run out and I’m waiting for a review copy that doesn’t arrive. And if I read a couple of pages of something, thought it was rubbish or not to my taste I could just delete it without a qualm. Even if publishers had to buy us poor booksellers the gadgets in the first place, they’d get their investment back within months in the form of saved time and resources.

So, what’s my overall verdict? I loved the fact that I can have so many books in my bag and hardly even know they’re there. I’m never quite sure what I’m going to be in the mood for when I go out so I end up carting about 5 heavy tomes just in case. My osteopath is delighted at the improvement. And I can’t help feeling joyous and comforted at the thought that I always have with me, a book for every occasion. I love the planet saving aspect (although the full carbon imprint is yet to be confirmed) and I can’t help feeling slightly smug as I pull out my step towards a greener reading future. I think the functionality is very, very good and it’s simple to use – even my mum would be able to work it out.

But… and it’s a big BUT, there’s still a very long way to go in terms of the variety of books available for download, the price of them and the extent to which this machine could be developed to widen its paper-saving possibilities. However, I have to say, it’s a small step in the right direction.

Okay guys, I’ve probably missed loads of interesting stuff that you’re desperate to know about, so I’m opening the floor to questions… anyone?

I've just found this site a sort of online portfolio of work by Don Relyea. http://www.donrelyea.com/

Some of Relyea's art projects focus on the use of a few basic geometric shapes. The combination of these shapes and the vibrant colours produces some interesting pieces. I really like them and think it is striking enough to make the viewer want to dismantle all the geometric components and examine them as individual parts.

The still image above is a view of what you would see once you have generated the design as the user (click the image to have a go). Relyea uses Shockwave applets to present his work. It is usually in the form of an interactive project and requires the user to take an initial action. For examle when the user clicks on the red blank box the design quickly starts printing itself from the top left corner all the way around the box in a clockwise spiralling motion until the whole box is covered with the pattern.

Relyea has variations of these pieces - some even allowing you to choose the combination of colours and the randomness of the generation of pattern. See the Space Filling Curve Art Generator

The technical background to his work is explained on his site. Here is an excerpt from the Artist Information page:

Relyea's tools are script editing windows and compilers. Relyea's schooling in traditional printmaking (under Lawrence Scholder) left him with a strong consideration for the process of image creation. Relyea loosely defines new digital processes by creating works manually first, he then transforms the processes into programming routines with parameters. The parameters can be dynamic data from the network, mathematical algorithms or number generators. The routines are repeated with parameter variations to generate designs of similar aesthetic quality.

I think I might try contacting him and ask him a few questions about his work and how much of it he considers to be influenced by the world of geometry. hmm wonder if he'll reply - will keep you posted.

Posted by Tilia

Let me just start by saying that it's really effing difficult. It's like that first year of college, for people who didn't immediately join 8 campus clubs. You just kind of look around, knowing you should be having a blast, but feeling like your options are a.) walking around alone or b.) renting season 5 of 24 ... again.

And I'm not just talking about meeting people in a romantic sense, though that'd be nice too. I mean, I hate to say it, but my stint at the Scary Pub was really the best social facilitator I've had so far. I got a date out of that, a few nights in other pubs with people, and even that house party. But, alas, that job was just not worth the social perks.

So, here's the deal. I'm not content experiencing London sans new friends. I'm a very social person and I like to meet new people and have little adventures, since adventurous things tend to happen to me once I've put myself into the ballgame. And yeah ... a hookup or two wouldn't be bad either.

So today, being on a budget and all, I discovered London is Free, a website dedicated to things I can do without dishing out a ton of dough, because let's face it, this city is seriously expensive. I've drifted automatically to the film events, specifically the short film showcase that's listed, but there are some other things I want to check out too. Specifically, that book club in SoHo with the Vaudeville theme ... that sounds fantastically insane. I'm hoping straights are welcome, regardless of the clear theming.

So, soon, I'll be able to review a few free events here on the Meet-People-Meter, which I will soon devise. If the package my mom supposedly mailed me over a week ago would arrive, I could even take some pictures, since it includes my recently-repaired digital picturebox.

In other news, there's this gorgeous, Mr. Darcy-esque man who works at the far end of my office ... but I work with a bunch of glam-bots, girls-next-door, and other assortments of dream women, so chances are, that's not a very hopeful prospect, even though we did finally speak on Friday, and it was pretty flirtatious.

And also, paying my internet bill involves knocking on Lithuanian Guy's door ... and it's still fun, because he's still hot.

Of Montreal is a band that has seen success as the result of good music (arguable), but also good marketing (possibly also arguable, but not as much).

First, their music video for "Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games," featuring cutsy-wootsy pop art animation, garnered wide attention from the web nerds. Then, the same song was used, slightly altered, for a obnoxious yet hypnotic Outback Steakhouse commercial.

And now comes of Montreal's wonderful new shenanigan for their new album, Skeletal Lamping... Blik Surface Graphics inspired by the album artwork!!

A true of Montreal fan benefits hugely from this offer, as purchasing one $40 set also gives a code to download the whole album digitally. So, after doing the math, if each song is purchased at $0.99 apiece digitally and there are 15 songs, the graphics pretty much only cost $25. Which is not bad at all, especially when one considers that these are these are extremely intricate packages with many pieces.

The David Barnes package (click here to view) has 105 movable and reusable pieces, and the Gemini Tactics package (click here to view has 55 movable and reusable pieces.

Compare that to something like this Lacy Sunday package by Jan Habraken, which only comes with 4 colors in three packages, and you REALLY get an idea of what a good deal this is. If you're an of Montreal fan.

Or maybe you just like their graphics and want to sell the code for the album download.

So you probably heard about the little spat between Activision Blizzard and Warner Music concerning

So you probably heard about the little spat between Activision Blizzard and Warner Music concerning royalties for songs on Guitar Hero. Or maybe you didn't. Either way, I'm going to talk about it, because it gives us a hint about the future of music in gaming.

It's an interesting philosophical question, a little like the chicken and the egg. How much of Guitar Hero's popularity is due to the fact it contains hit music, and how much of the current popularity of the music in Guitar Hero is due to the fact that a whole new generation has discovered the music while playing the game. For me, the answer is pretty easy. The music would have a far, far smaller chance of extending its shelf life to a new generation without the game.

So here's my theory on popular music: it's popular because it's crammed down our ears ad nauseum until we start to like it. There's some weird piece of the human psyche that likes the monotonous torture that is pop music. I can't explain it, but it's there.

For decades, the recording industry has had a choke hold on the distribution lines for music. This has meant that they basically could create stars by controlling playtime for songs. Is that a cynical oversimplification? Yes. But it's also pretty much spot on.

Then along came the internet and changed all of that, and we all know that saga. And the "audience" has never been the same. It's fractured. You can't gather people together and hold them together like you could in decades past, because they have sooo many options to get their content from.

It's the same for television. The networks used to command massive audience because there were only a handful of channels. Now the audience can choose from hundreds of channels on cable and satelite, and can watch entirely different programming on the internet. As a result, the audience for any given show is much smaller.

Coming back to music, so yes, the recording industry isn't as dominant as it once was and can't cram stuff down our throats as effectively as it used to. Even so, cramming is still the most effective way for a pop song to become a hit. As evidence, consider "bad day" from American Idol. For a several months there, the only way escape hearing that one was by actually dying, and even then I'm not sure you'd escape it (depending on whether you were headed up or down after death).

And now back to gaming. Gaming companies have gathered together a huge and consistent audience, and they are in a position to channel content to that audience. It's not on the same scale that the recording industry had for all of those decades, but it's still very significant. So what does that mean?

Well for me it means that the next logical step would be for gaming companies to sign and break their own bands. Sign them when they're unknown (and thus cheap) and cram them down our throats until we can't live without them. And the gaming audience is now big enough that if there's a hit among us, the buzz will be loud enough to carry the band to the rest of the world, be it by radio, internet or otherwise. It will be a new avenue for music to become known. And owning the rights to the music would be a new source of revenue for gaming companies, an income stream that could far outlast the shelf life of the game that broke the band.

Of course gaming companies could continue using the has-been bands that are now nothing, as well as the has-been bands that still get airplay as a way to hedge their bets in case we hate the music of the new gamer-bands, but the way to innovate would be to sign entirely new bands and get them into the mix.

So this is the opening statement of this blog I suppose... Where everything cunjoured-up in the Digital Environments elective and anything relevent to it out in the "real world" gets fly-posted and hopefully made sense of. For me at least.

So here's a bundle of goodies from my personal stash of bookmarks and lurking areas of the internet and maybe a few extras, be what they will.

The idea of this is for it to act as the first ring in the tree; a reference point, so that maybe over the course of the elective and beyond, I can compare any changes in the digital world and my relationship with it to where I think/thought it is/was going. Phew.

Anyway, enough with the banter. Here are my bookmarks from my browser (firefox 3, with stumbleupon and delicious add-ons).

Bookmarks tool bar:

www.facebook.com

Ok, there it is. Not very exciting but it is what it is.

There's also my delicious bookmarks, you can find them here: http://delicious.com/dimitrihon

Here's what my desktop looks like right now too...

My current system is OS X 10.5.5 at this point in time, the current version.

I don't really have a plan of where this is going, I'm just recording what my "Digital Environment" consists of right now. The way I record this will most probably change drastically as time progresses and as I grasp the subject better.

Toodle pip.

Now when most bands go on tour, you'd expect them to be driven round in a big tour bus (preferably one with onboard entertainment systems). To have roadie's lug huge flight cases around. To even have their own sound man. Not I. For I am stupid (and perhaps a little spendthrift). Either way, I'm on tour with a friend called christiaan, my clothes are crammed into a lego club bag I've had since I was 5, my midi footpedal is in a plastic bag and a freshly installed kenwood stereo is all within our tour bus...or should I say Peugeot 106. Nicknamed 'Madame Ananas' for comedic value...with a value rating of approximately 2 cpi (chortles per square inch).

Christiaan is my scape goat/videographer. He's busy filming random events and then editing them together into our blog-tastic video diary. He is also responsible for some other jobs. For example: sharing the driving, manning the merchandise stall and being generally annoying as he sees fit. I could have draughted in an actual tour manager, but it wasn't economically viable. I would have been making a loss before the first performance. I guess they do deserve their money as it's not a great existence. Constantly moving around. Having to keep some rowdy band in check. Being the victim to endless pranks. Like putting cling film over the toilet bowl then putting the seat down...always a classic, hey christiaan!

So let's start at the beginning. A perfect place.

We set off from HQ early afternoon. Destination: Start The Bus, Bristol. As well as it being the first night of the tour, I also had the pleasure of playing alongside Rod Thomas, songwriter extrodinaire.

Despite Bristol's crazy one way system (like most cities nowadays) we arrived in good time - due to me anally leaving more early than we needed. Soundcheck was delayed massively, but it was not a problem as I was able to sit and chat with my fellow performer. The gig itself was great. Had some friends down and sold some cds, which is always nice.

Now for this first leg of the tour. I had decided that it would be cheaper to head back to london after every gig, the incentive being able to sleep in my own bed and get a lie in! So for all the following dates bar our sheffield gig, we drove back to HQ and ultimately...bed.

the dates were as follows

1st - start the bus in bristol

2nd - The grapes in sheffield

3rd - old blue last in london

4th - the assembly in leamington spa

5th - the playhouse in cheltenham

6th - resident instore (afternoon) and (evening) digital in brighton

The Grapes up in Sheffield was a lovely intimate venue, to be found at the top of an old pub. I was supported by my friend Benjamin David and the Goliaths and my favorite folk band Tim and Sam's Tim and the Sam Band with Tim and Sam. A lovely evening was had by all, but i couldn't help feeling like my beats were a bit too much for some of the audience. I felt a bit stupid nodding my head in rhythm to the thudding bass as people sat around or stood motionless before me. I'd like to think they appreciated the effort.

After a wonderful night's kip in a premier travel inn...with the emphasis resting firmly on the "premier" we indulged our stomachs in a slightly sub par breakfast from the adjoining little chef. Sufficiently satiated we left sheffield heading south to the big smoke....ah...alliteration.

We were heading to a festival I was booked to play, staged in the trendy reaches of shoreditch. Concrete and Glass the festival. The Old Blue Last the venue. They made me feel extremely welcome there with a fridge full of beers in a lovely dressing room...doesn't take much does it...Don't forget I am traveling in a cocking peugeot 106, what do you expect!

I was playing with a number of really cool acts, who by all respects should have been on last, but the good Jon Kennedy of xfm fame saw it best when curating the night to shove me on at the end. A great response from a great crowd. Not as packed as the night before, though. I heard they had to turn Jack Penate away! Maybe he was trying to get in under his real name...Jack Fabian.

The next show on the saturday was the one I was looking forward to most. a) because I had convinced my girlfriend to come along and join me on the road for that night and b) i was playing with one of my favourite new bands...one of the freshest sounding acts around. Post War Years. Truly original and always perfect live. It was The Assembly in Leamington Spa and I (for my sins) was on last. Not sure why as PWY's are much better than me...plus they set the bar insanely high with an outstanding performance, which consisted primarily of new songs...all of which where instant classics.

The venue itself was massive. It used to be a bingo hall we were told whilst being shown round the immense back stage area. We all had our own individual rooms which jutted off from a main communal lounge, with it's own bar, sofas, out of service dodgem cars and a trailer once owned by Tammy Wynette. Yes...a trailer indoors! The walls themselves had been built around this behemoth. The most garish pink with chrome trimming on the outside and crazy glass, mirrors and plastic covered cushions on the inside.

I felt like I performed well, at least that's what the lads from PWY's said...so I thanked, bid adieu and left them to their shenanigans in the pink and chrome trailer!

Now sunday was an interesting one. This gig was the Playhouse in Cheltenham. Promoted by the most wonderful Stefan and his lady Becca. It was a lovely gig with an attentive crowd, but I did feel like I was the oldest one there. The other bands were a lot younger than me. I felt like an uncool uncle when trying to chat to them. I guess I just have to get used to that. It was also another gig like the Grapes in Sheffield, where most people had taken to sitting down in a very chilled out manner. A bit weird when I was trying to get some people up and dancing with my electro musings.

I didn't have to worry too much as this was one of the most successful gigs for selling merchandise. i guess they liked it after all.

Interesting story about the drive back. We nearly got fully up close and personal with a frickin stag. I'll set the scene...paint the picture with my wonderfully poetic words.

Okay...so we're driving along the A40. Christiaan at the wheel. Madame Ananas doing at least 60 (possibly 70....I know...lock her up! she broke the law!)

The conversation meandering into whether we've ever hit a badger whilst driving. I admit that I've at least seen the damage a fully sized badger can cause to a car....they can get quite fat down south!

Anyway about ten minutes later we see (on our side of the road, facing into the hedge) a fuck off massive stag...antlers and everything! Christiaan slammed on the breaks, but as he did the mammal turned and ran...full pelt...into our path. As we were still traveling pretty fast christiaan cleverly decided to accelerate around the approaching stag. We ended up swerving fully onto the other side of the road and missing the sprinting beats by 2 inches at the most. If we'd collided it certainly would have written off the car and possibly come through the passengers side...i.e.: my face!

This event was followed by a steady stream of expletives and blasphemy.

The last and final day of this leg was Brighton. Playing a little instore during the afternoon and then the sea front club Digital. It was a really good night actually. When we first arrived there were no lights on and I had to set up my stuff in almost pitch black. The gig itself was in the smaller room of the venue which still looked pretty sizable. I was worried that i would be playing to an empty room, but luckily some friends came down and added girth to the trickle of fans I managed to pull from brighton's surrounding area. The sound guy Ally was really good as he'd been on tour with New Young Pony Club and The Go! Team so he managed to get a great sound out of the PA.

The instore was equally as great. Not as successful on the cd selling front, but everyone who came along was really attentive and listened quietly as i strummed my way through my acoustic set. Perched on the counter next to the cash machine. They even let me choose and keep a couple of cds for free (which I thank them for again). If any of you are interested. I chose Plaid, Autechre and Clark. I had earlier bought a copy of Rex The Dog's debut album too).

So there you have it. We have come to the end of part one of my tour. I'm currently up in yorkshire on the second leg. The video diary 'Part One' is still to be edited (christiaan?!) and uploaded. so let this be an appetiser.

Farewell

So it's finally happening. Perhaps Seagate saw the writing on the wall once Intel started shipping SSD's last month. It was hard to believe that the largest hard drive manufacturer had managed to resist market demands for so long. Perhaps you believe Rich Vignes when he says they are focused on perfecting the technology or maybe they are just stalling while the rush a product to market. The lawsuit against STEC was probably enough of a threat to get current SSD manufacturers to look over their existing patents, hopefully they are in the clear. Anybody else selling SSD's need to push sales and hope that they can gain enough market share to sustain sales going forward. Because when 2009 hits, everybody's gonna be buying Seagate SSD's.

I'm guessing Western Digital will be announcing "baby raptor" SSD to debut in 2009 as well.
