I have not shared a meal in the past few months with Mike Arrington. Last time I remember seeing him was at his TC party a couple months ago.

I am NOT paid in any way by TC50. I have absolutely no business dealings with TC50. I have signed no contracts.

"But you're a judge." That is true. But so are many other people, including executives and VCs from around the valley. I am NOT being compensated for my time judging the finalists in the rich media category.

I am quite willing to spray my invective toward Arrington and Calacanis. They haven't been friends to my business interests over the years.

I will be looking for things to both criticize and praise about both conferences this year. Actually I'll probably be nicer to Demo this week because I'm not there and it's not really fair to criticize something that you don't have a personal involvement with. The companies' websites? Fair game.

Anyway, I'll be judged at the end of the week whether I was biased one way or another. If I do have a bias, it'll be easy to see.

I have been more "aligned" with TC50 up to this point for a variety of reasons. Mostly because I think Arrington and Calacanis are outhustling Shipley. But, now, that isn't really for me to judge. Now it's YOUR turn to judge which conference did a better job of finding the best startups. I'll link to the best analysis no matter what side of the fence it's on.

UPDATE: also, this is true for FastCompany. Unlike other media companies like Mashable or Venturebeat that have sponsored Demo, FastCompany has no business ties to TechCrunch or Demo.

Wow, what a lot of interesting companies. But here's the problem: how many of these have you even tried? I bet that if I averaged out all my readers it would come up to somewhere between five and seven. And you are the smartest, most passionate, and most early adopter tech users in the world. For most people? I bet they might have tried one and have no clue about the rest of this list.

And THAT is why I'm getting to be much more harsh on startups. New startups are coming into this marketspace where even good existing companies (most of these companies are very good and are executing well) aren't getting much attention. So if you don't measure up to the current market standard bearers, you probably won't have a possibility to succeed.

Lots of people think I should just go "rah rah" for new startups. I'm sorry, I'm not going to do that anymore. You want to get on this list? You've got to earn your way on here. Out of the more than 100 companies we'll see this week, it'll be interesting to see who will do just that.

Chương 2 - Demo

Xu hướng demo là xu hướng dominate trong các sản phẩm phần mềm của Việt nam. Người demo công nghệ, kẻ demo thuật toán, có công ty thì chỉ đơn giản là demo người. FPT cũng không tránh khỏi trào lưu đó. Tổ sư của các sản phẩm demo (ngày nay người ta còn hay gọi là presentation & presenter) là anh Đỗ Cao Bảo tức BaoDC@fpt ngày nay.

Vào năm 1989, các loại chương trình như PowerPoint, ScreenCam còn chưa tồn tại. Tuy nhiên IBM có một chương trình tương tự rất độc đáo, gọi là StoryBoard. Chương trình này có nhiều điểm hay mà cho đến nay các chương trình tiên tiến kể trên vẫn không có, tỉ dụ như khả năng định nghĩa một màn hình ảo trong một phần bất kỳ của màn hình máy tính, và cho các chữ, hình chỉ thể hiện trong đó. Anh Bảo là người đầu tiên thiết kế bộ chữ tiếng Việt cho StoryBoard. Các màn trình diễn độc đáo do anh Bảo thiết kế lúc đó thường là quả đấm thép của Công ty trong việc đi ký các hợp đồng. Hơn thế nữa chúng còn được dùng cho các mục đích khoa học và ngoại giao. Thông thường là màn hình được mở ra với hai bàn tay đang nắm chặt và dòng chữ chạy: "Hoan hô đồng chí ...". Trong các đồng chí được hoan hô phải kể đến các Ông Đồng Sĩ Nguyên, bộ trưởng GTVT, Ông Vũ Đình Cự, Viện trưởng Viện công nghệ, Giáo sư thủy lực Obermayer của Viện Max Plank-Đức, Ông Trần Lâm, Tổng Giám đốc THVN,... nhiều khôn xiết. Tiếp theo là từng đoàn ô tô, máy tính và các kiểu chữ uốn lượn, cụp xòe miêu tả các hoạt động của FPT liên quan đến vụ việc. Kết thúc thường là một cành đào, hoặc một bức tranh phong cảnh.
Tôi còn nhớ lúc đầu, khi chưa làm được bộ font tiếng Việt, anh Bảo đã bỏ công ra viết hẳn 1 chương trình tương tự như StoryBoard. Không hiểu có bạn trẻ nào bây giờ có ý tưởng viết lại PowerPoint chỉ vì nó chạy chậm quá không?!
Chương trình demo nổi tiếng thứ hai của FPT mà anh Bảo lại là nhân vật chính là chương trình "Đèn đường". Số là hồi đó (1989) AIC có một chương trình rất nổi tiếng gọi là CAMAP. Khi chạy, bản đồ năm châu bốn biển hiện lên và trôi dạt theo điệu nhạc rất du dương. Khi kích chuột vào các vị trí trên bản đồ ta có thể thu nhận được những thông tin về khu vực đó. Phải nói rằng AIC vào quãng năm 1989-1992 là một Công ty rất tập trung vào công nghệ phần mềm, đặc biệt là đồ họa và cũng đã đạt được những kết quả đáng khích lệ. Họ còn được mời sang tận Pari để thực hiện một hợp đồng cho kinh thành ánh sáng. Tôi thỉnh thoảng cũng mò sang chỗ họ chơi và rát lấy làm khâm phục khi thấy anh Phạm Tiến Dũng có trong tay đến hơn 20 cô thiếu nữ xinh đẹp ngày đêm di digitize, vào số liệu bản đồ thành phố Pari. Không hiểu vì sao về sau không còn thấy nhắc đến AIC nữa.
FPT, cụ thể là anh Bảo, cũng không phải là tay vừa. Vừa may, lúc đó có Mr. Nguyễn Viết Tuyển giám đốc Xí nghiệp đèn đường Hà nội đến để đặt vấn đề làm chương trình quản lý hệ thống chiếu sáng công cộng của Hà nội. Lúc đó FPT chẳng có ai thành thạo về Fox cả, nên chỉ có một ý tưởng là làm kiểu GIS. Ban chuẩn bị đề án được cấp tốc thành lập gồm có anh Công chủ trì, anh Bảo lo phần vẽ và xử lý bản đồ, tôi lo phần quản trị và thể hiện các đèn sáng-tối, anh Ngọc lo phần âm nhạc. Chương trình được hoàn thành trong hai tuần, mở đầu bằng cảnh bản đồ Hà nội trôi trong tiếng nhạc "Trùng trùng quân đi như sóng ...". Tiếp đến là sơ đồ nối các bốt đèn gọi là mạch vòng, các đường phố,... Tóm lại rất ấn tượng. Tiếc rằng khi đến trình bày cho Xí nghiệp, anh Công lại chỉ ra quá rõ sự yếu kém về chuẩn bị của đội bạn, do đó đội bạn sợ chạy mất. Giả sử lúc đó chúng tôi có đôi chút kinh nghiệm về thương mại hay láu cá hơn một chút thì có lẽ sự phát triển phần mềm của FPT đã đổi sang hướng khác và biết đâu ngày hôm nay nước Việt nam đã có một Bill Gates ?!
Tuy nhiên chương trình "Đèn đường" - 4D thực sự đã có một tác dụng demo tích cực và được chạy đi chạy lại hàng trăm lần cho các quan khách khắp nơi xem. Cũng có thể coi 4D là sản phẩm Multimedia đầu tiên của FPT.
Mr. Nguyễn Viết Tuyển quả là người có tầm nhìn xa trông rộng. Tất cả những kiến thức sơ đẳng về GIS mà chúng tôi học được hồi đấy giờ đây vẫn tỏ ra còn có tác dụng. Tiện đây cũng xin bày tỏ lòng biết ơn tới anh cùng gia quyến.
Nếu tôi không nhầm, chương trình vẫn còn được lưu trữ trong server FPT_SS. Thiết tưởng các nhóm GIS và Multimedia khắp nơi của FPT cũng nên ngó qua tí chút cho các bậc đàn anh được mát lòng thỏa dạ.
Tiêu biểu cho trường phái lập trình lãng mạn của FPT là chương trình "Flight Simulation" - "Mô phỏng bay". Cuối năm 1992, anh Tô Dũng, PTS Hàng không Kiev về, đã tìm đến Thành Nam đặt vấn đề: "Xí nghiệp sửa chữa máy bay A76 quyết định trình lên chính phủ duyệt đề án xây dựng cabin tập lái máy bay TU134, do đó A76 muốn tìm các cộng sự mạnh về tin học, toán và điều khiển". Không một chút do dự, FPT nhận lời ngay. Cùng tham gia dự án còn có các nhóm chế tạo đầu đo của Viện Vật lý, nghiên cứu tên lửa của Không quân, AIC.
Bài toán khá phức tạp, đòi hỏi phải thể hiện được sự thay đổi của không gian 3 chiều xung quanh người lái dựa trên các tham số đầu vào đo được như độ cao, tốc độ, hướng gió, hướng bay, vị trí bay,.... dự tính sẽ chi 400.000 USD, một con số khổng lồ đối với thời bấy giờ và có lẽ đối với mọi thời đại.
Để được tham gia chính thức vào đề án, FPT phải làm một chương trình demo và dự án. Nam, Bảo, Hữu được giao lo chuẩn bị. Dự án có 3 phần, anh Hữu viết về các phương trình khí động học, anh Bảo viết về việc thể hiện những cảnh 3 chiều. Nam lo phần thiết kế mạng và các máy tính. Đối với tôi, đó quả là một nhiệm vụ hết sức nặng nề bởi vì chúng tôi hiểu rằng phải đưa các trạm làm việc (WorkStation) đồ họa vào mạng, mà tại thời điểm đó lại không có một tí thông tin nào về chúng cả. Nghe người ta mách, tôi mò lên Trung tâm Thông tin Khoa học của UBKHKT (ngay đối diện với FPT 25 Lý Thường Kiệt cũ). ở đấy quả là có một lô các đĩa CD với đầy đủ thông tin về máy tính. Sau một hồi tán phét, anh Nguyễn Khắc Sơn, giám đốc Trung tâm đã cho tôi ngồi để chọn ra tất cả các thông tin có chữ "WorkStation". Nhờ thế trong bản dự án lúc đó, FPT mới có thể chào được cả máy SunSpac và RS/6000. Nói thêm đôi chút về anh Sơn. Anh luôn băn khoăn tìm cách sử dụng kho thông tin vô giá trong tay. Vừa có lợi cho xã hội, tập thể và bản thân. Vậy mà không được. Lúc đó anh nổi tiếng hơn về cung cấp các bộ font tiếng Việt cho Ventura, PageMaker. Theo như anh khẳng định, đa số các loại fonts tiếng Việt khác đều có nguồn gốc từ anh. Sau đó tôi được biết Sở Khoa học & Công nghệ & Môi trường Tp HCM chỗ anh Nguyễn Trọng đã triệt để thương mại hóa được nguồn thông tin tương tự.
Lại nói về phần demo của chương trình, theo thiết kế chung sẽ có 2 modules chạy trên hai máy khác nhau. Một để tính toán ra các thông số về tốc độ và độ cao dựa trên các phương trình khí động học lúc máy bay cất cánh. Các thông số tính được sẽ được truyền qua cổng COM sang máy thứ hai chạy chương trình mô phỏng visual cảnh máy bay cất cánh. Chương trình tính toán do anh Lê Quốc Hữu chịu trách nhiệm, vì phải tính toán nhiều nên được ưu tiên chạy trên chiếc máy 486 duy nhất lúc đó: NipponTech. (Máy này hiện vẫn còn trong danh sách tài sản cố định của FPT. Xuất xứ của nó khá buồn cười: hồi đó FPT muốn kinh doanh máy ĐNA, tìm được một hãng cung cấp cực củ chuối, thậm chí còn đồng ý cho mình đặt mark máy luôn, nhãn hiệu NipponTech là do Trung Hà đưa ra làm người ta dễ nghĩ rằng đây là một loại máy cao cấp do Nhật sản xuất). Chương trình truyền/hứng dữ liệu qua cổng COM do Phan Minh Tâm viết. Chương trình máy bay cất cánh do Đỗ Cao Bảo viết cũng thấy đường băng chạy giật lùi và máy bay ngóc đầu lên trời mây. Kỳ lạ thay là cả hệ thống phức tạp như vậy đã hoạt động. Hôm bảo vệ đề án, quân ta đã dùng máy chiếu chiếu lên tường toàn bộ cảnh tính toán và máy bay cất cánh, rất gây ấn tượng. Tiếc rằng sau đó đề án không được lãnh đạo Hàng không phê duyệt. Chẳng hiểu tại sao, có lẽ tại Việt nam đang muốn vứt TU134 đi. Giá dụ như mà chúng tôi mạnh dạn theo phương hướng đổi mới của Đảng và nhà nước mà đặt béng tên đề án là "Buồng lái Boeing 767", thì không khéo đã được chấp nhận.

Lễ hội 1993
Năm 1993 là năm quan trọng với tôi, cũng là năm FPT kỷ niệm 5 năm ngày thành lập. Cho đến bây giờ tôi vẫn thấy rằng đó là một năm thành công nhất với FPT cả về kinh doanh, công nghệ, văn hóa cũng như STiCo.
Sở dĩ quan trọng đối với tôi vì năm đó tôi được đi nước ngoài. Tôi được cử đi Hong Kong học về PB (Platform for Banking) của Olivetti. Đây là lần đầu tiên FPT cử một cán bộ kỹ thuật đi học không nhằm mục đích kinh doanh trực tiếp gì cả. Có thể coi đó như một cam kết của công ty với công nghệ. Mặc dù trước đó đã học hơn 8 năm ở Nga, và cũng đã đi khá nhiều nước như Bun, Ru, Tiệp, Hung, Đức song Hong Kong là nước tư bản đầu tiên mà tôi đặt chân đến.
Theo dự định có 2 người đi là tôi và Hùng xoăn. Tuy nhiên khi đội bạn gửi chương trình sang thì thấy toàn học phần mềm nên Hùng xoăn phải ở lại. Hình như lúc đó anh cũng hơi buồn. 20 ngày ở HongKong một mình thật là đáng nhớ. Bài học đầu tiên mà tôi rút ra được là mọi thứ cũng không đến nỗi đắt như mình nghĩ. Sau khi đi xe buýt đến tận khách sạn, phát hiện ra khách sạn quá sang (sau khi xài thử video đen) tôi vội vàng gọi điện nhờ anh Thăng hiện là giám đốc Đồng Nam tìm cho chỗ ở khác rẻ hơn. Hiếm thấy anh Việt kiều nào nhiệt tình như anh Thăng. Mặc dù trước đó không hề quen biết tôi và hết sức bận bịu, anh đã tận tình giúp tôi trong việc ổn định chỗ ăn ở. Anh có mời tôi đến nhà chơi, lấy thuyền đưa tôi đi thăm cảnh chèo thuyền truyền thống ở Discovery Bay . Bây giờ anh vẫn là người bạn tốt của FPT.
Học trên lớp được 3 ngày, tôi đã cảm thấy chán. Mặc dù PB là một môi trường rất hấp dẫn và hứa hẹn, nhưng cách dạy của Tây rất chậm. Tốt hơn hết là copy hết tài liệu mang về mò sau. Sau một tuần tôi quyết định không tham gia tiếp khóa sau mà nhờ Angelo Canepa (hiện là giám đốc Olivetti Việt nam) giới thiệu cho cấu trúc và các bộ phận của Olivetti Hong Kong. Sau đó tôi tìm cách đi đến các Công ty như Microsoft, Novell, Sun,... những tên tuổi lẫy lừng của công nghệ thông tin thế giới mà lúc đó ở Việt nam vẫn chưa có dấu vết. Đến Hong Kong, tất nhiên không thể không đến Golden Center, trung tâm mua bán các thiết bị vi tính và phần mềm sao lậu. Bây giờ tôi vẫn nhớ cảm giác như mình lạc vào thiên đường vậy, thấy cái gì cũng quý. Chỉ nhớ lúc về xách cho anh Đức bảo hành hai thùng đủ các loại cable, board và copy hàng trăm đĩa mềm khác nhau. Sau này tôi còn ghé lại Golden Centre nhiều lần nữa, nhưng chẳng bao giờ thu hoạch được như lần đầu.
Sau hơn 1 tuần đấu tranh tư tưởng, tôi đã quyết định mua một bộ Multimedia đầy đủ của Creative: Sound Blaster và Video Blaster gồm đủ cả Video-in và Video-out, giá chính xác là 995 USD. Cũng được các xếp khuyến khích vì năm đó là năm kỷ niệm lần thứ Năm thành lập Công ty. BGĐ quyết định sẽ tổ chức đại lễ hội cực kỳ ầm ĩ. Để góp vui ISC và STC quyết định sẽ liên doanh để cống hiến một chương trình Super Multimedia đặc biệt.
Nhóm Hùng xoăn và Đức béo được giao nhiệm vụ thiết kế một hệ thống tương tự như truyền hình cáp trong khuôn viên phòng họp lớn của Khu biệt thự Hồ Tây. Mục tiêu là để replicate lại chương trình trên nhiều màn hình. Sau một hồi thử nghiệm, thất bại chán chê, bọn chúng quyết định nhờ anh Võ Mai (lúc đó đang ở Singapore) mua 4 bộ Commandor là thiết bị Multidisplay có thể nhân hình ra nhiều màn hình. Tất cả các TV của cán bộ FPT ở khu Thủ lệ đều bị trưng dụng.
Nội dung chương trình được giao cho tôi và anh Bảo. Lại một lần nữa anh Bảo thể hiện là một chuyên gia lập trình xuất sắc, bất kể ngôn ngữ nào. Hồi đó, trong bộ Video for Windows của Creative có một chương trình thương mại là Action, không hiểu thế nào hỏng béng đĩa setup, tìm mua cuống cả lên không thấy. Anh Bảo quyết định dùng một chương trình khác có tên là Tempra cũng đi kèm nhưng là miễn phí. Đó là một kiểu ngôn ngữ lập trình đơn giản (script) cho phép người dùng có thể điều khiển các objects multimedia như bài hát, âm thanh, ảnh và băng video. Phải thừa nhận là tuy có khó sử dụng nhưng Tempra rất giàu về tính năng và mềm dẻo. Và anh Bảo đã nhanh chóng thành thạo.
Để có nguồn dữ liệu chế biến, anh Bảo xách máy quay video (của anh Bình) đi quay lung tung: khách hàng, công ty, các hoạt động STC. FPT cũng đã có sẵn một số băng. Chúng tôi cũng phát minh ra một phương án đưa các bức ảnh lịch sử vào máy tính mà không cần scaner màu: kê một cái bệ thật chắc cho camera (cho nó khỏi rung), dí ảnh cần lưu vào. Sau đó play băng đó trên máy tính và capture ảnh. Tuy có vất vả một chút nhưng vẫn đưa được hầu hết các cảnh lịch sử vào máy tính. Chẳng hạn như chiếc xe máy nổi tiếng của Hùng râu có cuộn dây trong hộp đèn pha. Chỉ có điều là những ảnh đó có palette màu đối lập với Windows nên khi show nó, những thứ xung quanh có màu không giống cũ nữa. Nguồn âm thanh rất đơn giản, về nhạc có bạn Hưng đỉnh, trong nhóm Hoa sữa vác Organ đến và ghi lại tất cả các bài hát truyền thống của STC. Về lời, Mr. Bảo ra sức luyện giọng để đọc lời bình, song câu "Vỗ tay..." với âm lượng kéo dài the thé có dáng dấp của một Công Công là thành tựu nhất. Lại còn thuê cả một hội vỗ tay rào rạt để chêm vào trong những chỗ quan trọng. Khẩu hiệu "Vỗ tay..." nổi tiếng của anh Bảo được phát kiến chính trong dịp này. Sau khi đã hoàn tất các phụ kiện, chúng tôi ngồi lắp ghép. Đầu tiên cũng định play ra màn hình và ghi hết vào một băng. Sau đó phát hiện ra rằng, ngay cả với cái đầu ghi hiện đại nhất của anh Ngọc, cũng không có cách nào ghép các băng lại thành một băng duy nhất mà không bị ngắt đoạn ở giữa. Đành quyết định ghép nối bằng tay tại sàn diễn. Anh Bảo lập tức dựng lên một menu để nhắc nhở tôi là người điều khiển khi nào phải ấn cái gì. Kịch bản được dàn dựng khá công phu, theo đó thì các cảnh video và nhạc nền sẽ thay đổi liên tục để khớp với bài phát biểu tổ hợp của anh Bình, Tiến, Ngọc, Trản
Cuối cùng thì cũng đến ngày công diễn. Hội trường này trước đó chỉ dành cho các cuộc họp của TW Đảng. Thật là một cảnh ấn tương. Các đại biểu (kể cả quân ta) được tiếp đón từ dưới thềm, hoa cài ngực. Mỗi bộ phận được phân một góc khoe khoang những thành tựu của mình. Góc Sotico đông như kiến cỏ vì là nơi trưng bày tờ báo ảnh nổi tiếng do Tú Huyền và Khánh hói làm tổng biên tập (hiện không hiểu tờ báo này lưu lạc ở đâu?) Tuy nhiên nếu bạn muốn xem đầy đủ thì có thể xem lại bức ảnh chụp lại trong Album của STC, còn nguyên bản đã bị chú Đào Vinh xóa mất bức ảnh gây ấn tượng nhất.
Cả một hội trường rộng lớn bày la liệt các màn hình máy tính và TV thể hiện cảnh sông Đà hùng vĩ (đề án Thủy điện) trong tiếng nhạc "Đoàn FPT". Được một lúc thì có sự trục trặc, đúng lúc anh Bình đang hùng hồn cao giọng thì tôi lại ấn nhầm vào nút vỗ tay, tiếng vỗ tay trong máy được phóng to nghe cũng rất ấn tượng. Quan khách ngơ ngác, rồi cũng theo đà vỗ tay ầm ĩ. Luống cuống tôi lại bồi thêm nhạc bài "Công ty sáng tác". Từ đó trở đi ảnh, hình một nơi, nhạc một nơi, người phát biểu một nơi, không còn khớp với nhau như kịch bản nữa. Tuy nhiên sau đó mọi người đều có nhận xét: "như thế FPT hơn". Đó là câu nhận xét mà tôi rất tâm đắc và thường xuyên đem ra kiểm nghiệm mỗi khi có dịp.
Toàn bộ hệ thống demo đó về sau còn được trưng bày tại trụ sở ISC ở 146 Nguyễn Thái Học, đặc biệt là được đem sử dụng trong dịp khai trương Ngân hàng Chinfon (lúc đó gọi là Cathay Trust), ông khách sộp của SIBA. Về sau chỉ còn mỗi Cù Huy Minh Tuấn là nhớ cách chạy demo. Sau mấy lần chuyển qua chuyển lại, giờ không thấy đâu nữa. Thật đáng tiếc cho một sự nghiệp khởi đầu hứa hẹn nhưng đã nhanh chóng mai một, để bây giờ Hùng Râu không kiếm đâu ra người lập trình Multimedia cho các trường phổ thông.
Lễ hội năm 1993 thực sự là một ngày hội vĩ đại. Ngoài việc kích thích công nghệ multimedia phát triển, còn phải kể đến cuộc đua xe đạp xuyên Hà nội do Hùng Râu đứng ra tổ chức. Cuộc đua gay go và căng thẳng không kém gì Tour de France. Mở màn bằng cảnh pe-dan bị gẫy gục dưới sức dướn của TGĐ Trương Gia Bình và anh phải dắt xe chạy bộ đoạn của mình. Kết thúc bằng pha lâm ly: em Bình (hiện ở phòng kế toán FPT), buông tay lái ngất xỉu trong lúc Hùng kều (Zodiac) bật sampanh mừng chiến thắng. Nếu hồi đó ISC có thêm một số nữ nữa thì chắc đã thắng cuộc. Chặng cuối, từ Láng Hạ về Giảng Võ, Vũ Mai Hương đã dẫn trước cả ki-lo-met. Các chàng trai kiểu Tiến béo, Hải kều,Thắng còm, Nam béo,... phi xe máy bám theo đông như kiến, anh nào cũng cố sờ tay vào xe của nàng vừa để lấy danh vô địch, vừa để lấy oai với người đẹp. Chẳng hiểu bọn chúng ghét nhau hay tay chân loạng quạng thế nào mà em Hương tự dưng ngã lăn đùng, xe thành hình số 8, người đầy xây xước. Về sau họp kiểm điểm, Hương chỉ khóc mà không nói được câu nào. Bí mật đấy coi như bị đi vào quên lãng.

Client/Server
Một chương trình ấn tượng khác là chương trình Ngân hàng Client-Server. Hồi năm 1993-1994, thuật ngữ "Open System" rất được ưa chuộng. Trong các cuộc khẩu chiến, cánh UNIX, ORACLE thường thắng thế. Chúng tôi được IBM xúi rằng, "Open System" là cái đinh, Client-Server mới là ác chiến.
Sau khi Nam đi học về PB (Platform for Banking), một môi trường C/S của Olivetti. FPT quyết định mua một bộ các công cụ demo ngân hàng của Oliveti, trị giá tới hơn 7000 USD. Có lẽ đây là một trong những đầu tư quan trọng, phức tạp vàtốn kém nhất của công ty. Bộ công cụ bao gồm:

• Máy chủ Olivetti LSX 5010, to đùng, tráng kiện, có cài UNIX SVR4 và LanManager
• Cơ sở dữ liệu Informix
• CardX.25, cho phép ghép nối mạng LAN với mạng X.25
• Máy đọc thẻ từ
• Máy ghi thẻ từ
• Máy in sổ có đầu đọc và ghi thẻ từ
• PB for UNIX
• PB for Windows

Tóm lại là một mớ những phần mềm và thiết bị đầy công nghệ. Để thấy mức cao của công nghệ, xin kể một chuyện: Hồi đó FPT đang còn duy trì việc thi chuyên môn cho những nhân viên mới. Phải thừa nhận đó là một cuộc thi khá phức tạp, thậm chí có phần khó hơn luận văn tốt nghiệp. Tỷ dụ như câu hỏi ưa thích của Đức béo là: "Làm thế nào để cắt đôi con 8866?" (hoặc con gì đó, tôi không nhớ rõ). Của Trần Ngọc Trí là: "Hãy viết một chương trình bat có 500 dòng lệnh để tìm được file cần thiết" (tương tự như find file của Word bây giờ). Nhiều chí sỹ đã có kinh nghiệm hẳn hoi mà vẫn phải ngậm ngùi nhận 0 điểm. Đình Anh khi đó vì mới vào nên cũng phải thi. Hắn là một tay láu cá, biết có học cũng trượt bèn dùng võ cùn. Khi được hỏi đang làm gì, hắn dõng dạc tuyên bố: "Đang lập trình PB" và nhìn các vị giám khảo một cách rất thông cảm. Quả nhiên không ai dám hỏi gì và hắn được nhận vào cho đến tận ngày nay.
PB là một môi trường lập trình phân tán được thiết kế khá mềm dẻo, cho phép người lập trình có thể tạo ra và sử dụng các services không phụ thuộc vào services đó đang được cài đặt ở máy nào. Đại loại có thể viết các chương trình như print server, com server một cách không phức tạp lắm. Đội quân thiện chiến nhất của ISC gồm Phương và Đình Anh được tung vào cuộc. Bọn chúng mày mò cài đặt, sử dụng non-modem cable để giả lập đường X.25 và lập một chương trình thực sự, chương trình quản lý tiết kiệm cho Ngân hàng. Khách hàng được cấp một sổ tiết kiệm có băng từ, khi đến Ngân hàng thì máy sẽ tự động đọc và update sổ đó, và nhiều features khác tựa như thay vì gõ password thì cầm thẻ kéo xoẹt một cái qua. Bản thân tôi thấy rất ấn tượng. Vậy mà không hiểu sao các bọn Ngân hàng mà chúng tôi đem đi demo chẳng có phản ứng gì và chương trình Client-Server đầu tiên mãi mãi vẫn chỉ là demo. Tuy nhiên việc nghiên cứu môi trường PB cũng đã đặt những nền móng đầu tiên cho việc xây dựng NICS và sau này là TTVN. Chỉ tiếc rằng ngoài Phương và Đình Anh ra chỉ có 2 tay thạo PB khác là giáo sư Văn và Hưng K34 đều không ở lại FPT cho đến bây giờ.
Bây giờ nhìn lại mỗi chương trình demo đều thực sự là những thử nghiệm lớn, đã mang lại cho những người lập trình và thiết kế những kinh nghiệm kỹ thuật hết sức quý báu. Tiếc thay những kinh nghiệm, những kết quả đúc kết được đã không được đem sử dụng triệt để mà dần dần bay hơi theo thời gian. Bây giờ thì tôi hiểu rằng chúng tôi đã bỏ qua một khía cạnh quan trọng của việc phát triển phát mềm: thương mại hóa. Nghe có vẻ như xủng xoẻng hơi hướng tiền bạc. Làm sao lại có thể là động lực khoa học. Vâng, tiền tôi nghĩ không phải là yếu tố quyết định lúc đó. Thương mại ở đây phải hiểu rằng khả năng áp dụng vào cuộc sống. Chính cuộc sống mới là thước đo cao nhất đánh giá các phần mềm máy tính.
Có lẽ việc sớm nhận ra điều đó và kiên quyết coi phần mềm như một doanh nghiệp độc lậpchứ không phải là công cụ trợ giúp cho việc kinh doanh đã giúp cho chúng ta vẫn giữ được đội ngũ như hiện nay.

Über 1300 Neofaschisten marschierten durch Dortmund. Antifaschisten fordern Rücktritt des Polizeipräsidenten. Spontandemo von Antifaschisten gestoppt

Während sich Neonazis in Dortmund am Samstag über einen »Teilnehmerrekord« freuten, verkaufte die Polizei ihr Einsatzkonzept als vollen »Erfolg«. Antifaschisten aus der Ruhrgebietsstadt fordern hingegen den Rücktritt des Polizeipräsidenten, Hans Schulze (SPD). Dieser hatte zugelassen, daß mehr als 1300 Neonazis aus dem In- und Ausland unter dem Motto »Gegen imperialistische Kriegstreiberei und Aggressionskriege« durch die Ruhrgebietsmetropole marschierten.

Sowohl die Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes – Bund der Antifaschisten (VVN-BdA) als auch das Dortmunder »Bündnis gegen rechts« (Bgr) und die Bezirksvertretung Innenstadt-Ost hatten eindringlich das Verbot der neuerlichen Neonaziprovokation gefordert. Polizeiführung und Stadt Dortmund sahen dazu jedoch keinen Anlaß. Dies, obwohl es in den vergangenen Wochen zu einer von Neonazis verübten Anschlagsserie kam, die sich gegen das Dortmunder Wahlkreisbüro der innenpolitischen Sprecherin der Linkspartei im Bundestag, Ulla Jelpke, und die Wohnhäuser von Antifaschisten richtete (jW berichtete). Auch körperliche Übergriffe der als äußerst militant geltenden Dortmunder Neonazis hatte es gegeben. In der vergangenen Woche überfielen etwa 40 von ihnen eine Gruppe Antifaschisten in der Innenstadt. Zudem machte am Freitag eine Gruppe rechter Jugendlicher Jagd auf Mitglieder des Bgr, die antifaschistische Flugblätter in der Nähe des Aufmarschortes der Neonazis verteilten. Nur durch die Flucht in eine Gaststätte konnten sich die Nazigegner vor der sechsköpfigen Angreifergruppe retten. Ursula Richter, Sprecherin des Bündnisses, sagte am Sonntag im Gespräch mit jW, es sei »unglaublich, daß der Aufmarsch nach all der Nazigewalt der letzten Wochen nicht verboten« worden sei.

Der Aufzug der Rechten in Dortmund am Samstag war nicht nur der bislang größte in der Stadt, die Teilnehmer waren auch in einem bisher nicht gekannten Maß auf Konfronation aus. So versuchten sie mehrfach, polizeiliche Absperrungen zu durchbrechen. Insgesamt 16 Polizisten wurden dabei verletzt. Sechs Rechte und 47 Nazigegner wurden vorläufig festgenommen, Strafanzeigen wurden wegen Körperverletzung, Verdacht auf Landfriedensbruch und Verstöße gegen das Sprengstoff- und das Versammlungsgesetz von den Beamten aufgenommen.

An einer Kundgebung, die maßgeblich von Kirchen- und Gewerkschaftsvertretern organisiert worden war, nahmen rund 1500 Nazigegner teil. Unter dem Beifall der Anwesenden forderte Tülin Dolutas, Rednerin des Bgr, Polizeipräsident Schulze auf, der Dortmunder Bevölkerung einen Gefallen zu tun, und endlich zurückzutreten. Als der Dortmunder Oberbürgermeister Gehard Langemeyer (SPD) auf der Bühne wiederholt leugnete, daß die Stadt eine »Hochburg der Rechten« sei und behauptete, daß Rechtsextreme in Dortmund keine Chance hätten, machte sich unter den Anwesenden Unmut breit. Spontan beschlossen knapp 700 Antifaschisten sich am Ende der Kundgebung in Richtung der Neonazis aufzumachen, um dort verlegte Stolpersteine, die an Opfer der Faschisten erinnern, vor Schändung durch die Neonazis zu schützen. Die Polizei hatte dies im Vorfeld untersagt und stoppte die Spontandemonstration noch vor Erreichen der Naziroute. Angeführt wurde der Zug von betagteren Aktivisten der »Aktion 65 plus«, die im Vorfeld zur Blockade des Naziaufmarsches aufgerufen hatten.

An einer Demonstration sogenannter »antideutscher Gruppen«, die sich gegen »Antiamerikanismus und Antisemitismus« richtete, nahmen ebenfalls am Samstag knapp 800 Personen teil. Im Vorfeld hatten die Organisatoren einen Aufruf veröffentlicht, in dem linke Kriegsgegner als »Nationalpazifisten« verunglimpft wurden und ihnen eine Nähe zu den Neonazis bescheinigt wurde.

Und wieder einmal hat die Reise in die Vergangenheit ein nützliches Ergebnis zu Tage gefördert. Am letzten Augustwochenende 2008 war ich schon zum neunten Mal in diesem Jahr zum Musik machen in meiner alten Heimat Hannover-Linden.

Zum dritten Mal haben wir im Esszimmer von Sarge (The Trashlords, Zoonamii, Disco Darlings) eine lockere Musiksession abzuhalten. Die kleinere Besetzung mit W. Hank Daniels, Frank Meusel (H.O.R.E.), Sarge und mir hatte sich urlaubsbedingt hingegen zum letzten musizieren nicht geändert.

Aber auch in diesem überschaulichten Rahmen sind einige interessante Aufnahmen auf den Laptop gekommen. Neben ein paar Eigenkompositionen von meiner Wenigkeit, haben wir auch diesmal wieder ein paar solide Coverversionen von Musikern wie John Fogerty, Kinky Friedman, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams und Jagger/Richards ausgewählt.

Ein paar, wieder relativ schnell aufgenommen Songs, könnt Ihr Euch hier anhören und runterladen. Ach ja, der Session-Counter zeigt bereits schon 135 Lieder seit Weihnachten 2007 an. Erstaunlich!

Der Großdemonstrationstag in Dortmund ist weitgehend friedlich zu Ende gegangen. Mehr als 1500 Menschen hatten im Laufe des Tages bei einem Demonstrationszug und einer Kundgebung vor dem Opernhaus gegen einen Aufmarsch von Neonazis aus ganz Deutschland und dem europäischen Ausland demonstriert. Der Umzug der Rechten vom Südbad nach Körne, in dessen Verlauf es mehrfach zu Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei kam, zählte rund 1100 Teilnehmer.

Aus Sicht der Polizei verliefen die Demonstrationen trotz einiger Zwischenfälle, ruhig. "Das Einsatzkonzept und der starke Kräfteeinsatz haben entscheidend zum Erfolg beigetragen“, bilanziert der Leitende Polizeidirektor Dieter Keil als Einsatzleiter am Abend.

Sechs rechte Demonstranten wurden vorübergehend in Gewahrsam genommen. Die Polizei leitete

mehrere Strafverfahren wegen Körperverletzung, Tragens von Kennzeichen verfassungsfeindlicher Organisationen, Verdacht auf Landfriedensbruch sowie Verstöße gegen das Sprengstoff- und Versammlungsgesetz ein. Überrascht (??) war man vor allem von der aggressiven Stimmung im rechten Lager.

Der Großeinsatz für die Polizei mit mehreren tausend Beamten begann bereits am Morgen als ein Protestzug gegen Rechts mit rund 800 Teilnehmern um den Wall gezogen. Später versammelten sich nach offiziellen Polizeiangaben rund 1500 Demonstranten auf dem Platz der Alten Synagoge, um unter dem Motto "Bunt statt Braun" friedlich gegen den Neonazi-Aufmarsch zu protestieren.

"Wir wollen Euch nicht in unserer Stadt. Wir wollen Toleranz und Vielfalt", lautete unter dem Beifall der Menge die Botschaft von Hartmut Anders-Hoepgen, Sonderbeauftragter der Stadt für Vielfalt, Toleranz und Demokratie, an die Neonazis.

OB Langemeyer: Dortmund bleibt eine weltoffene Stadt
"Dortmund bleibt eine weltoffene Stadt, in der Rechtsextreme keine Chance haben", stellte auch Oberbürgermeister Dr. Gerhard Langemeyer als einer der Redner der Kundgebung vor dem Opernhaus fest. "Dortmund ist eine keine Hochburg der Rechten".  (Zu dieser Aussage bitte den Bericht auf Indymedia lesen!)

Ausdrücklich lobte der OB die Reaktionen von Schülern und Lehrern etwa des Helene-Lange-Gymnasiums, die sich gegen die Verteilung von rechtsextremistischem Propagandamaterial an ihrer Schule gewehrt hatten. "Es gibt eine breite Mehrheit gegen die neonazistische Ideologie", zeigte sich Langemeyer überzeugt.

Der Sprecher des "Arbeitskreises Dortmund gegen Rechtsextremismus", Eberhard Weber (DGB), kritisierte, dass Mahnwachen an drei Stolpersteinen zum Gedenken an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus nicht zugelassen wurden, weil sie direkt an der Strecke des rechten Umzugs liegen. Besser wäre es gewesen, so einen Neonazis-Aufmarsch zu verbieten. "Das wäre die richtige demokratische Antwort gewesen."

Trotz des Verbots zogen nach der Kundgebung vor dem Opernhaus rund 700 Demonstranten zur

Gedenkstelle vor dem Wasserturm am Heiligen Weg. Von dort bewegte sich der nicht genehmigte Umzug bis vor die jüdische Kultusgemeinde an der Prinz-Friedrich-Karl-Straße. Einen Weitermarsch in Richtung rechter Wegstrecke verhinderte die Polizei. Der Großteil der Demonstrationsteilnehmer machte sich später wieder zurück auf den Weg zum Platz der Alten Synagoge. Trotz des friedlichen Verlaufs kündigte die Polizei an, rechtliche Schritte wegen Missachtung der Verbotsverfügung des Polizeipräsidenten zu prüfen.

Die Polizei hatte generell alle Hände voll zu tun, Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Antifaschisten und Neonazis zu verhindern. Schon nach dem Ende des Demonstrationszuges des linken Bündnisses "28.3." am Mittag hatten mehrere hundert, zum Teil vermummte Jugendliche versucht, den Treffpunkt der rechten Szene am Südbad zu erreichen. Starke Polizeikräfte verhinderten allerdings ein Zusammentreffen der verschiedenen Gruppen. Um eine Blockade der S-Bahn-Strecke wie bei der Neonazi-Demonstration am 1. Mai 2007 zu verhindern, hatte die Polizei vorsorglich sämtliche Eisenbahnbrücken der S 4 gesperrt und bewachte die Bahn-Trasse streng.

Im Viertel zwischen Kaiser- und Kronprinzenstraße setzte die Polizei immer wieder Jugendliche fest, die dem Anschein nach der linken Szene angehörten. Allerdings ist es inzwischen schwierig, linke Demonstranten von "Autonomen Nationalisten" zu unterscheiden. Eine weitere spontane, allerdings kurzfristig angemeldete Protestaktion veranstalteten Vertreter des Grünen-Kreisverbandes am Rande der rechten Wegstrecke am Robert-Koch-Platz.

Zu Zwischenfällen kam es aber auch innerhalb des Neonazi-Umzuges, der mit großer Verspätung startete und immer wieder ins Stocken geriet. Viele Teilnehmer zeigten nach Polizeieinschätzung ein hohes Gewalt- und Aggressionspotenzial. Bei Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei während und zum Ende des Marsches wurden wiederholt Feuerwerkskörper gezündet und Flaschen geworfen. 16 Polizeibeamte wurden dabei leicht verletzt.

Der rechte Umzug endete gegen 19.15 Uhr am S-Bahn-Haltepunkt Körne-West. Aus Zeitgründen hatten die Organisatoren allerdings auf zwei ursprünglich geplante Kundgebungen in Körne verzichtet. Bei der Abreise der Neonazis kam es erneut zu vereinzelten Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei.

Here were these companies that prepared months to spend six minutes on stage.

Later I talked with "DemoGods Coaches" like Shel Israel or Nathan Gold. They told me just how much hard work went in behind the scenes. Some teams spent literally months preparing their demos and getting their companies ready for the big day. This year the big day is on Monday.

Each company has spent $18,500 just to get on stage. That part you all know about because of the famous fight that Demo has had with its competitor, TechCrunch 50.

But the Demo Coaches tell me there's a lot more that goes into it. Many of these companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in time preparing (and hiring coaches like Nathan Gold, who has a few companies in the running down at Demo). They also often bring their entire teams down to both host the booth in the expo hall as well as host meetings in hotel room suites for press and VCs. Lots of deals are done in the back rooms.

This is why I was so harsh to all those sites this morning. This is the Super Bowl. It's not a little high school recess game. Thousands of people have visited the list already in the past few hours since I posted. It's at the top of TechMeme. There's a lot of attention on the list.

Pointing out that these sights suck has gotten me quite a few harsh words in the past few hours. None harsher than Chris Shipley's post in reply.

My response to her? Because this is the "Superbowl of Startups" Shipley needs to step up the game here.

Here's a few replies to her post.

First, she didn't call me before posting her post. So, let's say she's right about the fact that I post posts without getting her point of view then she just lowered herself to my level to make a point, which now is weakened significantly because she didn't practice the higher ethics she says she wants us all to aspire to. More on that in a little while, though, because that really doesn't have much to do with the Superbowl of Startups, er, Demo.

She wrote: "But seriously, if I cared about startups, I’d be sure there were links in my stories for the convenience of Robert and other bloggers?"

No, that's not why I said that. Yes, I'm an egotistical baaahhhsssstttaaarrddd, and a lazy one too, but this shows you have contempt for the startups you are trying to help. A link is VERY IMPORTANT. Why? It gets Google juice. For a startup Google juice is probably more important than anything else the conference can do for you. Why? Because until someone links to your site you won't be found very high on Google, which is where 99% of your customers will come from (not from tech blogs like this one, Shipley's, or TechCrunch). Having a site like Demo link to you can mean the difference between being on the first page of results vs. being far lower.

Also, a link makes it easier for readers to do. When sites don't link the things they talk about will see 100x less traffic than if they do link. Yes, readers (and bloggers and journalists even) are lazy. So, throw them a bone. Finally, by not linking you'll force your readers to manually enter the URLs, which keeps Web sites from getting a good referral (server logs keep track of where visitors come from) so you won't get as much credit as you're due.

Anyway, back to what Shipley wrote. Here's another passage: "When misinformation is propagated out of laziness and inconsideration, that’s hardly informative. It’s not “new school;” it’s No School."

Um, OK, but did she point out something that I got factually wrong? No. Did she add new information? No. Did she just make it sound like I had gotten something wrong? Yes. Did she succumb to the same sins that she attacked me and Sarah Lacy for? Yes.

So, what did we learn here? Well, we learned that Shipley is disappointed with the coverage she's getting. That much is clear. But did she take the time, after she had berated us for that coverage, to correct it? No.

And that makes me very sad. Because it's like Shipley (and her commenters) are stuck in the past where words were printed on dead trees and you can't argue with them.

This is not a one-way shipment of words. It's a conversation.

If I say something wrong, or do something you don't like, you get involved and slap me around for a while and then YOU CORRECT IT. Notice that I've linked to Shipley here twice tonight. Over on FriendFeed I passed her post to all of my friends. Same on Twitter. I'll do the same on Facebook too. That's a lot of attention that she had, but she didn't take the time to get her point of view across.

Which brings me back to the "blogging is reporting" meme that she's trying to get across.

Blogging is NOT reporting. It's the single voice of a person. When you read me here you are reading me the way I'd talk to you at a cocktail party. You're hearing my opinions. If I'm doing "reporting" then you'll know, because of how I source it.

Sorry, I'm not going to call you every time I have an opinion. If you think I should, then you are crazy and don't understand blogging.

I used to be like Shipley (Tim O'Reilly has voiced the same opinions too). I used to think that you should call me when you write something about me. That's why I put my phone number on my blog (it's +1-425-205-1921 -- I do answer my phone and that is actually my cell phone that I use every day).

But I was wrong. See, this is a two-way conversation. You write crap about me. Then I can decide to answer you back.

This is unlike any other communication method ever devised by humans. Talk radio? Give me a break. I waited on hold for an hour last night to make a two-minute contribution to KGO Radio. Newspapers? Have you ever gotten a letter to the editor printed? How many weeks did it take? Magazines? I write for one of those and it takes months to get anything into it. TV? When was the last time a normal human being was on TV holding a conversation with someone on demand for as long as it takes? Never. Try getting on CNN sometime and see how easy it is.

But here? You can leave a comment. You can head over to FriendFeed. You can blog. You can Seesmic. YouTube. etc. etc.

Oh, and Shipley says I'm living in the "rarefied air of the echo chamber." I love that diss. It might have held weight if she had called me and proven that she's better than me. But, now that she's shoved the cream pie in my face I'll point out that none of the hundreds of startups on my show had to pay to get onto my video show. Ever.

Back to the "Superbowl of Startups." I will relook at each site this week. Unfortunately Demo, for the first time in years, isn't putting up videos of the demonstrators, so I'll just be forced to link to other bloggers who are writing about Demo down there and then I'll have to compare those companies to ones I'll see face-to-face at TC50. That will probably introduce some bias, but I'll link to all my work product and other sites and, anyway, if you don't like what I say you can easily do a Google Blogsearch and find someone else you like better. Luckily there are lots of areas that don't overlap between Demo and TC50, but where there are overlaps it'll be interesting to compare the two approaches. I'm sure some will like the Demo approach. Others will like the TC50 approach.

As I was growing up, my mother instructed me that, when I got angry or frustrated, to count to ten before saying anything.  Quite honestly, I've counted to ten ten-times over.  I've bitten my tongue and clenched my teeth and I've really tried to let it go.

And now, I just can't help myself any longer.

Over the last few weeks, I've read too many blog posts (notice how we don't call them "stories" any more?) filled with invective, passed-along assumptions, and outright misinformation that I can't help but to call into question the standard of "reporting" going on in the echo-chamber we call the blogosphere.

When in a twitter I bemoaned the lack of original reporting (only one reporter (cnet) and exactly zero bloggers writing this week about this silly DEMO v TechCrunch episode actually contacted me), the infamous blogger Robert Scoble suggested that if I'd blog my opinion, he'd link to it.  Does that mean that a perspective only exists or matters if it's expressed in a blog post?  Or that Robert's just moving too fast to do any investigation outside his narrow medium?

Scoble's not the only guy living in the rarefied air of the echo-chamber.  Sarah Lacy, who works for the much-respected Businessweek.com, conducted a five-minute video interview with TC50's Mike Arrington and Jason Calacanis, during which the two leveled the usual slander.  Did Lacy fire one tough question at the two?  Did this journalist call me or the DEMO organization to get a response to serious accusations?  Um, the answer to that would be "no."

In fact, a few weeks ago, when Mike Arrington wrote an assumption-based and error-filled story that demanded an apology from the DEMO organization for a comment that was clearly not made by or on behalf of anyone at DEMO, Lacy picked up the story and wrote with righteous indignation that slander was the highest insult that could be leveled against a journalist.   Did she call me or DEMO before posting her story?  Again no.

Let me be clear: plagiarism is not the worst offense of a journalist; its root cause is:  Laziness, shoddy reporting, and arrogance.

In a post last week, Scoble tried to make a case for the "new school" as more hip, effective, and informative than the "old school."  When misinformation is propagated out of laziness and inconsideration, that's hardly informative.  It's not "new school;" it's No School.

Robert Scoble took the time - it must have taken at least 30 minutes to click through to each of the 72 sites - to visit the Web sites of DEMOfall's demonstrating companies.  Here's what he had to say:

I just visited every one of these companies. Boy do they almost all suck (at least their Web sites and if their sites suck, I can’t believe their products are going to do much better).

Now this is the same guy who, earlier in the same piece said that if I "really cared about the startups" I would have taken the time to put links in a post about them.  Okay, our bad, in the rush to publish the list of DEMOfall companies, we posted the URLs of the companies, but didn't link them.  But seriously, if I cared about startups, I'd be sure there were links in my stories for the convenience of Robert and other bloggers?   This from the guy who cared enough about startups to spend maybe 30 seconds looking at a pre-release Web site before declaring that the company and its products "suck."  Now there's critical thinking and thoughtful review.

Listen, I'm not just picking on Scoble or Lacy.  This shoot-from-the-lip blogging has been going on far too long.  And maybe I can't really blame guys like Scoble who now stoop to the lowest and simplest form of "criticism"  in an effort to attract legions of followers.  Those of us who care about civilized discourse and critical thinking carry the burden if we don't stand up to the bully tactics. If we engage in invective as sport and don't demand even the slightest semblance of balance, then maybe we get what we deserve: a pack of school yard bullies who believe theirs is the definitive voice in the "conversation."

They're better than that.  We're all better than that. Let's start acting like it.

A playable demo of Life-Sim/RPG adventure Spore Creatures has snappily arrived on the Nintendo Channel and is immediately available for download for those who wish to dabble in the evolutionary game.

You'll be tasked with designing your very own race of monsters from scratch, after which you can muck about at your will with them in an RPG-like adventure. It may be a stripped down version of its PC counterpart, but at least you won't have to spend the best part of your bank account on suitably equipping your PC.

Does no one understand how to market themselves?

It's amazing to me that not a single Demo website has learned from the lessons of Gary Vaynerchuk's Winelibrary.tv. Now THAT is a Website that knows how to market! (Interesting that Gary runs a wine store that sells $50 million a year, yet no one looks at his style as a great way to market your service/product yet).

Almost no company on this list is using video. Amazing that in this age of YouTube that statups aren't understanding how to use video, or are even trying to use it.

But some are far worse. Mapflow's company's site only has a password protect up for it. Amazingly bad, especially since there are probably thousands of people who will get that as their first experience with this company.

Some other mistakes?

1. Lots of companies have Demo badges, but don't welcome Demo visitors. Who cares that you're going to show off at Demo? We do care about what the news will be. So, include something like "on Tuesday you'll learn how we'll solve xxxx problem."
2. Photrade's website gave me an error.
3. Some, like Plastic Electronics, just have a lame Demo logo and a sign that says "world leader in plastic electronics." Who cares? What do you do? What is plastic electronics? Or, worse, look at Semantifind. Can't they at least put up a few words about what problem they will solve and collect an email address? Remember, this is my first impression of these companies. Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame and, no, I won't be back. Sorry. Usable says "come see us at Demo." Um, out of all the visitors to your Web site this weekend how many are going to Demo? I'd guess almost none. After all, if you were going to Demo you'd be drinking beer in the bar right now, not checking out the list of startups.
4. Some, like Open a Circle, seem to aim at a problem that doesn't exist or seem to be too early. They could really help their case by explaining the pain point that they solve.
5. Too many words, like this site at Radiant Logic. I fell asleep as soon as I saw the site. Oh, and lame stock photo too.
6. We're a "me too" company, like Wild Pockets which looks to me like a copy of Kongregate but Wild Pocket's doesn't explain differentiating factor.
7. ToolTogether just gave me a form without explaining a thing about their company. That's ultra lame. I can't believe how bad these companies are.
8. Visit this website for Trinity Convergence for 10 seconds. Click close. Now tell me what they do. Buzzwords!!! Convergence? Multimedia? Embedded devices? Mushy marketing and I still don't know what they do, the value they bring, the pain they solve.
9. Solves problems that don't exist. This site, TurnTo, wants you to use your friends to solve problems, or find products. Um, Twitter already solved that. Facebook has all my friends. And I'm not going to get them all to join a new service, sorry. Especially one that uses lame stock photography.
10. I don't know what this service does, but I know that it won some prize from some conference that doesn't matter. The site isn't even in English. Sigh.
11. UGA Digital has probably the worst example of marketing I've ever seen. It's the antithesis of what Gary Vaynerchuk does. Who cares whether your team is in multiple countries? I love companies that claim they have "boundless imagination." Certainly isn't demonstrated on their Web site.
12. "Download Unity Solutions info sheet." Ugh, FAIL!
13. Wait a second, this company wants to make a difference in the world? Why the hell are they spending $18,000 to go to Demo? They could have just donated that much money to some interesting charity and gotten more PR.

Ones that caught my eye?

1. Quantivo. Nice design, gets to the point. Uses video. Makes me want to click into the site.

Um, I visited every single company on the Demo list. Amazingly lame companies. Amazingly lame web sites. Is this it? Am I missing something? How did these companies get $18,000 to go to Demo?

Back to reality. Any startup that looks at this as a loss should be refused funding.

First it's funny that a CNET reporter is saying that. After all, CNET is one of the few organizations around that has the resources to attend both conferences. CNET should LOVE this because it gives them a HUGE advantage over 99.9% of other bloggers.

The way I look at it is that four years ago only 70 companies got paid attention to (I attended Demo that year). Now double that number will. Even if you only try out the top five companies from each conference that number will be double too. So, competition between two conferences is GREAT for startups. Any startup that says otherwise just won't have credibility with me.

The fight between Arrington and Shipley has helped focus our attention on these two conferences (the LA Times even wrote about it) so now startups are getting even more PR than they'd get if there were only one conference. Keep in mind that each of the 70 startups on this list paid $18,000 to get on stage, so I'm sure not crying for Shipley's business. Seems to me that it's better than ever.

OK, now that we have the drama of the morning out of the way, let's dig into the 70 demonstrators at Demo. TechCrunch will announce its list on Monday morning at 6 a.m.

If Shipley really cared about the startups she would have made each of the URLs in this list linkable. Here, let me do that. Then, let's take the weekend and see what we can learn about each of these companies. What do you think of this group? Anything here catch your eye?

Das Trierer Ausreisezentrum, in das Menschen aus ganz RLP eingewiesen werden, befindet sich in der Dasbachstr. im Gewerbegebiet Trier Nord auf einem ehemaligen Kasernengelände. Ohne ÖPNV kommt man von hier nur mühsam in die Innenstadt, dafür aber fehlt meist das Geld. Menschen die hier leben, werden gezielt von der Mehrheitsgesellschaft separiert. Eine rechtliche Notwendigkeit zu diesem Vorgehen besteht nicht - es läge im Ermessen der sozialdemokratischen Landesregierung, eine humanere Regelung zu gestalten.

Regelmässig kulminiert die Schikane in kollektiven Zwangsvorführungen, bei denen Flüchtlinge offiziellen Vertretern anderer Staaten vorgeführt werden, damit diese die vermutete Staatszugehörigkeit bestätigen, woraufhin vorläufige Papiere für Abschiebungen erstellt werden können. Denkwürdig, dass einerseits deutsche Politiker sich so gerne damit profilieren anlässlich von Olympia für Menschenrechte in China zu plädieren, andererseits aber die Stadt Trier im Internet damit wirbt, dass der von Trier aus "organisierte bundesweite Einsatz von chinesischen Experten zur Identitätsklärung von ausreisepflichtigen ehemaligen chinesischen Asylbewerbern" so reibungslos funktioniere.

Gegen diese Zustände richtete sich eine gelungene Demonstration am 6.9, die auf Initiative der Gruppe "Passierschein A38" stattfand. Es nahmen trotz Regen etwa 100 Menschen teil. Bei der Auftaktkundgebung am Bahnhof sprach die Gruppe P-A38, an der Zwischenkundergebung an der Porta VertreterInnen vom Multikulturellen Zentrum und den JuSos Trier, bei der Abschlusskundgebung eine Vertreterin der AG-F.

I got the demo for Xbox360. That's partly why this is so late. I don't have a gold account and didn't want to get the PS3 version. Sorry guys, I'll do better next time. Anyway, if you were worried about the demo spoiling anything about the game, it doesn't. Because it is such a short demo, it really just comes out being a training level. However, it was enough to give me some important facts.

This game, as implyed by the name, focuses more on using your Force powers. As far as I can tell from the demo, any one wanting sweet lightsaber action should look towards the Wii game coming out later on. The Force Grip power is awesome, but it's hard to aim while under fire. This might just be because I'm just learning and I'll get the hang of it with practice.

The graphics look really nice. From screen shots I have seen doing comparisons, the 360 version has more detail but is some times to dark to see in places while the PS3 version doesn't seem to have the same depth in the art. It's a trade of that will only matter to videophiles. Don't worry about it too much, it's going to be a blast either way.

I won't say more about it because I think you should play it yourself. Just remember that once the demo gets good, it ends. It leaves you wanting more and may make you want to go ahead and pre-order it somewhere. Maybe from me?
