This past weekend Threadtrend went to the Detour Festival. The line up for this year's festival was a varied list of acts (most of which had already been through the LA area many times earlier this year).

We are Wolves

We were lucky enough to get there bright and early to see one of the more fresh faces at the festival in We are Wolves, who hail from Montreal, Canada and have their current release Total Magique out now on Dare to Care records. This is their follow up to Non-Stop Je Te Plie en Duex, which featured "Little Birds," a club banger a few years back. They played on stage 2 to a rather large crowd for such an early set. They had many cheering as they slayed through a near hour-long set of hard rocking and synth electro beats. They won the early birds over and put on one of the best sets of the day.

The rest of the day we saw sets from Grand Ole Party, Data Rock, The Black Lips (another highlight), Go Go Bordello, The Presets, Hercules & Love Affair, Mars Volta and the hands down festival highlight that was Cut Copy's set:

Cut Copy played to a jam-packed audience, and they even had the photo pit jumping and dancing around, but it was a sight to see during "Lights and Music" the whole crowd jumping up and down and singing along. One of the breakout acts of the year, they totally blew away the festival headliners and all anyone was talking about at the after party was Cut Copy.

Wednesday night: arrival, 11pm. No sleep, jetlag. Thursday night: Rikki reunion after work. Wine, pistachios, oregano potato chips. No sleep, jetlag, hang over.

Friday night: Moot knuckin' bff Rikster throws "welcome back" pardy of the century in little studio apartment. Little studio apartment doesn't mean little pardy.

Rikki made me a sign that said "welcome back" in Greek (Καλώς ήρθες)! We had olives and cheese and pistachio nuts and oregano potato chips and all sorts of Greek fare. Rikki presented me with a postcard that I sent her from vacay. "Uphold our values. Bushmills. Brown bag." Then she handed me a giant brown bag of Bushmills tied with a pretty red ribbon. Time to reestablish our values. Insanity commenced.

Michael kept saying "I think it's time for a Bushmills shot" every five minutes, but I delayed by saying first weekend back; I must pace myself. And yet still, even with delaying, we partied like mad and took ouzo shots and danced it off until 4:30 in the morning. Dance circle, get in the middle, you, get in the middle, dance, okay switch, you in the middle now. Rikki got in the middle and dropped to the floor and 80's danced like a mad woman to Madonna's jam "Burnin' Up." Most impressive thing I've ever seen.

Saturday: 9 am wake-up and more jetlag. Larbaged for hours. Realized I cannot and shouldn't try to blog when I'm exhausted and hung over. Makes no sense and takes too long. Began cooking preparations for my incredible cousin's birthday dinner. Cooked until 5, showered, went to cousin's, began wine drinking. Cousin's husband hazed me and Rikki and forced us to take multiple jagger shots before/during/after dinner. Exhausted by 10pm, went home, no going out, no pardy tonight. But, wait. Coworker calls: I'm next door at Delerium, you come out now! Ok, ok, one drink. Coworker gets A+ for generosity with rounds and one drink becomes ten. Fernet, bourbon, bourbon, fernet. Over to Kilowatt. Oh, hi friends at Kilowatt. Let's close the place down and get reminded to leave. Back to my place for more partying until 4:30 am again.

Sunday: 8am wake-up. Trip to sweaty Alameda flea market in Toyota Yaris zipcar. Sun beating down and hang over and jetlag and no water and used shit and sweating. And then traffic. Back into the city at 2pm. I need a beer immediately or I'm going to die. Hair o' the dog, or barf, you pick. Coronas in the backyard for hours. Mustaches and mullets and hilarious/disturbing stories about pooping in weird places and holey shirts and boys that could use a shower. And music and new friends and more beer. And 9pm, time for Cut Copy show with Rikki, off to Farmer Brown's for a gigantic free shot of Maker's from acquaintance bartender, over to the Mezzanine for concert. Brick wall as you know shortly after, but always there will be dancing. And we danced it off until 1:30 in the morning and then I went home and died a little bit in my bed and a few short hours later back to work.

Monday: sick, sore throat, hang over, still jetlag, 90% dead, 100% back with my homeslices.

And that's how you get welcomed back into the city by wonderful animal friends. Thank you, I love you, I missed you, I'm back! And I'm really glad I'm neither hung over nor jetlagged anymore.

Well, if death metal is your thing, fuck off to Norway, the rest of us will kick back and revel in the salacious sounds from Down Under.

Crap, I know - but you still wish you were there.

So I'm going to start with a Fleetwood Mac song, inspired by the cover of Everywhere Cam sent to me on Friday. This is one I found on a blog a couple of weeks back. It's a Cut Copy remix of a song called Never Forget, which I'd never heard of, and thankfully has nothing to do with Take That. It's starts off like a typical Mac tune with Stevie Nicks vocals and some gentle guitars before heading off into disco fromage territory. Nice.

i noticed her instantly—a raven haired girl with an expression of genuine interest in the locale.  perhaps it was the break from my regularly scheduled day, one generally mired in hopelessness and measured in sighs.  perhaps it was the turn towards what was, to me, an oddity—urban planning grad students from germany touring, specifically, the skid row area.   more likely, it was the raven-haired girl carine i couldn't help but cast a curious glance every so often.  whatever the case, the surrounding environ ceased to be oppressive.  i realized that the abject state of the various men and women—the latest unfortunate skid row fixtures—though no less saddening, were not my burden.  that's how i felt, at least, for the first time in what seemed like ages.

and so i glanced her way.  chatted with some other grad students. caught her eyes, brown with a hint of green.  they said they liked new york, but not los angeles.  she returned the stare. 

it went back and forth like this as we rounded sixth and san pedro, suspended play as we listened intently to two former drug addicts retell their recovery stories, then finally made contact. 

"yo, yo —, that girl's giving you the eye.  it'd be kinda nice to have a pretty little german girl, yeah?"  my co-worker said as much before engaging in conversation with another student.  i tried my best to hide the smile that formed on my face, the kind that refuses to be supressed.  not a moment had passed when the girl who would be carine turned to face me.  she asked me a question, sparking conversation.

i would like to say that i am a master of conversation, that the contents of our exchanges were endlessly intriguing and inciting laughter, spinning that invisible web we both wouldn't care to extricate ourselves from.  i would like.  the truth more closely resembles that of two timid souls fumbling speech and mangling meanings. without question, we were lost in translation at times.  but, for all that we lacked in verbal communication, there was a palpable mutual attraction.  she would go on to the urban planning nightmare that is san francisco and eventually back to germany, and i would return to my usual nine to five programming.  but, that knowledge was enough, that for a few hours, a person i knew nothing of from half way 'round the world connected with the maladroit that i am. 

and so she left with her class, and i returned to the office, somewhat floating through the day.  and my thoughts would stray to those wide brown-green eyes, to my ineptitude to say anything winning. my thoughts continued to stray as i entered the subway station, not so concerned with getting home as quickly as possible.  the usual suspects dotted the yellow caution lines, awaiting the next train.  a few stragglers raced to board another train about to depart.  familiar bursts of warm, filthy air rushed through the underground channel.  everything was as it had been in days, weeks, months past.  yet it felt different.  i felt different, as though i'd been slipped rose-colored glasses unbeknownst to me.  unconsciously, my hand fished through my bag, weaving through an obstacle course of objects in disarray before emerging with an i-pod concealed in a makeshift cover.  headphones set aright, i pushed play. 

i smiled.

Toi là! Je vais te dire pourquoi tu dois écouter ces musiques :

1. "I wish I was a polar bear"en boucle, le synthé grisonnant années 80 en pleine folie émile et image : le rythme est bon, bizarrement tu trouves ça assez sérieux dans la mélodieux tout en étant conscient que cette musique est assez débile dans sa composition. Après c'est un remix et sa change tout. mais on entend soudain un semblant d'original avec une voix un peu faiblarde mais pas méchante. La musique continue avec un beat qui te fait faire la poule(ou dindon au choix,selon la corpulence). C'est sympa. Finalement, on se dit que cette chanson est franchement bien et qu'il serait pas mal de la poster sur son blog, parce que ce genre de délire ça touche tout le monde. On ré entend cette voix jolie voix faiblarde..un solo de la grosse voix et ca sera le dernier souffle de ce remix...
2. Je l'ai déjà décrite mais ça vaut le coup de réitérer l'exercice...Le meilleur moment pour écouter ce remix c'est dans le train(voire bus, pas le métro hein!) soleil couchant, les yeux dans le vague, des ombres d'arbre et de barres hlm. On pense à tout, à rien, on pars, on revient, on devient un légume pensant. L'intro est tout simplement exquise. Et puis, le rythme arrive, c'est comme une marche lente dans la neige, on a froid, mais un radiateur volant nous suit et nous serre, une vague de chaleur nous envahit. C'est bien de l'électro, mais je ne sais pas, on sent comme autre chose dedans, un petit je-ne-sais quoi presque folk, ou non...ou j'en sais rien du tout. En tout cas, c'est un morceau vraiment excellent! L'original est bon aussi, plus rock, c'est sur, mais l'essentiel est là. Bref, remix qui "déchire sa maman"...
3. Là, je vois que vous soufflez déjà. Non, bien je vous avouerais que j'aimais bien l'original mais que en fait ça ma très vite souler, puis il y a eu la honte, de l'avoir aimé ne serait-ce qu'un moment.Puis, il y a eu The Teenagers, les remixeurs de la mort. Pas que la différence soit transcandante mais l'humour 10eme degrés de ce groupe est rafraichissante, et même si tu sais que tu te fous la honte à écouter Britney Spears tu te dis que t'es comme eux, tu te prends pas la tête et tu kiff merde. parce que après tout, Britney spears c'est comme une chanteuse d'electro banal, elle fait rien de plus. Le nom fait rire mais si c'était anonyme ca serait le buzz général...Pour revenir à ce remix, les teenagers se sont contentés de rajouter une bonne vieille guitare électrique, ca fait tout. C'est très bon et c'est tout.
4. Pour moi, Cut Copy, c'est comme tous ces groupes qui va et viennent dans la blogosphere ; ça buzz de partout et plus rien...silence radio. Mais la jeunesse est ce qu'elle est : tout le monde remix tout le monde et sur ce coup là ces petits australiens se débrouillent plutôt bien. Il renvoi l'original des kaiser Chiefs six pied sous terre, on en recracher juste ce qu'il faut pour refaire une musique tout a fait différente. Bref, c'est pas mal du tout. Accès tout public.
5. We like music, we love the disco sound" cette phrase vous reveille d'un coup, ca pete comm e du calvin harris qui fricotterait avec les justice. Malgré tout, c'est assez lassant, un peu trop disco a mon gout, electro trop..TROP. Enfin, je lai surement trop écouté, mais rien que pour entendre cette phrase il faut écouté ce machin là!ps: oui, la compile de la maison kitsune c'est de la bombe!
6. Oui, ca fait pas mal de kaiser chief d'un seul coup!Bon, je vais pas faire un fromage sur ça, c'est du kaiser chiefs comme on l'aime, tres marrant, tres sympa et puis voila. Petit bémole tout de même : j'ai écouté l'album et pour l'instant ca me parrait tres...hostile...
7. Voilà la petite touche folk de la playlist, pour reprendre un peu son souffle avec tout ces petits sautillements que vous avez surement du effectué à l'écoute des précédents morceaux. Ca clapotte des main, une petite voix toute mignone, des petits choeurs joyeux, de quoi bien finir sa journée.
8. La suite prchainement...

Le blablatage :

2 semaines assez éprouvantes de pré-rentrée (oui, les arts plastiques de paris 8 c'est la grosse merdouille mais bon, c'est marrant comme même.) je n'ai donc pas vraiment eu le temps de faire de réelle recherche, glandouillage sur les blog ect...donc c'est assez juste pour une playlist mais on s'arrange comme on peut. Oh! Bah, d'ailleurs grâce à cette longue pré-rentrée j'ai eu  un Candy Clash en prof d'informatique! Et puisque, finalement, il était cool je vais reparler de ce petit groupe bien sympathique. Tout d'abord, l'incontournable c'est bien sur le remix de Just Kiss Her par The Shoes, une pure merveille, je ne compte même plus combien de fois je l'ai écouté (je l'avais poster il y a bien longtemps, je ne sais pas si le lien marche toujours donc cadeau dans la playlist). Après pour résumer, le reste c'est un peu un mélange de tout, j'ai remarqué une forte similitude de l'intro de 79 avec celle de She's lost control (Joy Division)mais c'est surement moi qui suis fatigué... très pop dans l'ensemble en fait, rock'n'roll par une guitare bien sympathique, la voix est tantôt douce  tantôt Ricky wilsonienne dans ses pointes de nervosité mais presque Ian Curtisienne dans les graves(enfin, une volonté du moins). Bref, Candy Clash c'est franchement pas mal du tout, pour des petits français("petits français"...je faisais moins la maligne devant monsieur le clavier.)ça vaut au moins un gros coup d'œil, à rappeler qu'ils seront en concert avec Fujiya & Miyagi  pour seulement 17euro à la maroquinerie, je pense que ça peut être pas mal. :)

Sinon du coté de notre bon vieux Jack White, Voici le joyeux clip d' Another way to die. La bonne marrade...Comme dis si bien les inrocks des "Audaces capillaires et pas chaloupés"....On va pas développer, c'est franchement pas terrible, ça ressemblerais presque pour une pub coca light. Avec Charlotte, on s'est dis que ça devait surement être le réalisateur de On Call (KOL) qui sévit encore...

L'heure est grave les amis, les Dirty Pretty Things se séparent...Personne ne comprend vraiment pourquoi, d'un coup comme ça, plus de DPT. Personnellement, je pense que c'est une bonne chose pour eux, ce ne sera plus le post-libertines (même si je trouve que il n'y avait pas vraiment de continuité profondes-contrairement aux Babyshambles...). Comme tout le monde le sait, Carl Barat a démenti une reformation des Libertines (ouf!) et a préciser qu'il se concentrera sur son nouveau projet : les Chavs (avec a peut près tout les DPT, plus des klaxons, plus beaucoup d'autres gens....) donc affaire à absolument suivre!!

A oui, j'ai appris que Matt Bellamy est le fils du bassiste -Georges- des The Tornados, remarque à ne pas négliger(pourquoi? je sais pas)

I was browsing around some blogs, when I grabbed this mix on Stockholm Beat Connection and holy crap, it's sooo good. I must admit I was amazed just by looking at the tracklist. I mean, anything that includes Michael Jackson, Cut Copy, Kate Bush, Kid Sister and The Clash in one mix has got to be amazing, but this is just unbelievable. The mix is created by french electroclashers La Grève Générale and is apparently named after Tech-Noir a club in the Terminator movies. Can this thing get more messed up? I don't think so, and to be honest it's not that important either. It's just a great mix!!
