Apologies for the fact that I haven't written my friday round-up for a couple of weeks. I've covered a number of the big announcements elsewhere on my blog (e.g. They're Playing Our Song coming to the Menier Chocolate Factory), so you haven't missed too much of major excitement.

So, in this week's musical theatre news...

Flamenco Flamen'ka, a dance show directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood (probably most famous as a judge on the BBC's 'Stricly Come Dancing' was announced as opening on 18th September. The show is scheduled to run at the Lyric Theatre (currently home of Cabaret) for what appears a somewhat ambitious eight-week run. Given that the recent struggles of a number of new shows, it will be interesting to see how this show does.

Tim Rice is planning to write a new musical about the life of Machiavelli, although he doesn't yet have a composer on board to write the music to go with his lyrics. Apparently it won't be Andrew Lloyd Webber though as he's too busy with Phantom part II! You can see the original news in The Stage here.

Imagine This is the new musical which will step into the shoes of the recently-departed Gone With the Wind at the New London theatre (home of Cats for so many years). According to the covereage in The Stage, the musical is set in the Warsaw ghetto during the Second World War. Producers explain that it's not just depressing, and I've heard comparisons to Roberto Benigni's much-acclaimed film 'Life is Beautiful'. The show is directed by Timothy Sheader, Resident Director of the Open Air Theatre, and opens in November.

Daydream Believer has canelled its run at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, reducing the number of jukebox musicals hoping to reach the West End by one. According to What's On Stage, poor ticket sales were its downfall. Perhaps the public is looking for something other than a jukebox musical?

Sanjiv Bhaskar has his first night in Spamalot, receiving only lukewarm reviews from the press for his performance. According to an article on the Society for London Theatre website, he blamed his nerves on the presence of original Python Terry Jones in the audience.

The Music Man opened in Chichester to excellent reviews, including a 4-stars from Michael Billington in the Guardian. The production stars Brian Conley and Starlet Strallen in the leading roles and runs in rep until 30th August, and you can buy tickets at the theatre's website here. I've already seen the show, and thoroughly enjoyed it - I'll be writing my review during the week.

Jermyn Street Theatre will be home to a revue show of the work of Kander & Ebb later this summer. Tickets for Coloured Lights (yes, this blog is also named after a Kander & Ebb song!) are on sale via the Jermyn Street Theatre website. The cast have plenty of West End credits between them, so it should be worth a trip.

***STRAW GOSSIP***

We just got word that Savor, a restaurant in St. Louis, closed its doors this weekend. We received this email from the Cabaret at Savor:

Closing Was Sudden, Unexpected

I am writing to tell you that The Cabaret at Savor is closed.

The Cabaret at Savor presented its last show on Saturday, June 28. The 64-seat room opened as a cabaret in October of 2006, and presented some of the top names in Manhattan cabaret, including Steve Ross, Maude Maggart, Paula West, Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano, Mary Cleere Haran, Craig Rubano, Jeff Harnar, Barbara Brussell, John McDaniel and many others. It had also become a favorite venue for cabaret singers and musical theatre artists from St. Louis.

It's a loss, for me personally and for all here who love cabaret. The room was a terrific cabaret space, and both the singers and the audiences liked its elegant and cozy design. Unfortunately, I learned just 48 hours prior that Savor, the restaurant, was closing over the weekend. I have been working with the building owners to keep the cabaret space upstairs open, but at this time that appears not to be an option. I am looking for a new space, and hope to have an announcement soon. My thanks to all the wonderful singers and musicians, to those who did sound and lights, and especially to our audience. You made it a great room.

Sincerely,

Jim Dolan, Producer

We also found the news at the Riverfront Times.

Now that it's almost July, every day is hotter and more humid than the one that came before. That's the price we pay for living in tropical paradise! Why not take a break and relax in the comfort of your own home with a tall glass of lemonade and a movie?

Don't know what to watch? Have no fear! West Palm Beach Public Library has a huge collection of DVDs, including many selections from the American Film Institute's "100 Years, 100 Movies," which includes the best of the best across all genres. You can take them home for seven days, and there's no cost!

‘Cause sometimes you just need to sing.
1. Hairspray - Did everyone see Hairspray? Oh. My. God

'Cause sometimes you just need to sing.

1. Hairspray - Did everyone see Hairspray? Oh. My. God. That movie is my life. Every morning I wake up and the music starts in my head, and I sing through my day, annoying everyone. But I can't help it. I've got music in my soul.

Good morning, Portland, Maine! I just might be insane! Because I sing my words. Accompanied by birds.

2. The Sound Of Music - This is my favorite song in the movie. It is full of hope and wonder. In the course of just a few minutes Maria moves from frightened nun to confident and strong young woman. Just like me!

3. Rent - This is what I imagine my college years were like. Even though they were not at all like this. I was never this cool. Sigh.

4. Cabaret - Mein Herr. Liza sings to some German guy, about how slutty she is. She's a slute. It's very very Fosse! Plus, Miz Minelli has never looked as good as she does here.

5. Chicago - Catherine Zeta sings. She dances. And she's pregnant! And she's just committed murder. Truly excellent.

6. Xanadu - Come on. You knew it had to be here. Is there any happier thing than 80s Olivia?

As a bonus, here is a mixtape of these songs, so you can hear how good they really sound!

Remember that evening when you’ve just had it with the world and you just want to indulge yourself

Remember that evening when you’ve just had it with the world and you just want to indulge yourself with some quality time alone (or perhaps with a loved one). The weather is beautiful with a clear starry sky, the martini is perfect, and the ambience is surreal. You have this nagging feeling that something is missing? I know the answer - Paris Combo’s motif CD!

Who are they? Unless you are French or European (or aspiring to be one), or just love Jazz in any avatar, you probably haven’t heard them. Although they are into “Manouche Jazz”, if you are into Lounge, Tango, Gypsy, Swing, Bossa Nova, you really ought to get your hands on this. There is even a whiff of Arabic and Flamenco music. Those French don’t like to be stereotyped into any one genre or style of music for sure!

Although the name suggests otherwise, Paris Combo is really a combo of non-French folks (Australia, Algeria, Madagascar), who got together to please jazz-lovers’ ears - . And their music in one word is, well, elegant. And upbeat. And stirring. And uplifting. And soothing. And flirtatious. Phew!

The group’s leading Chanteuse Belle Du Barry must have worked in a Cabaret, because her voice is so mesmerizing yet seductive, that you have no choice but to surrender to it. The music transports you to a world of Moulin Rouge, where you feel like the French gentleman whom lovely damsels serenade and tease invitingly with their subtle but overpowering movements while you puff on your cigar and sip cognac (Ladies can perhaps visualize themselves as the singers!)

High, Low, In is a blast from the past with its naughty yet quaintly elegant music that invokes nostalgia, although I presume lyrically, its more like a morning hangover.

Some songs weave a beautiful French affair - If Calendar is a mischievous dalliance and an ensuing intense affair, Etoile Pale is a reflection after heartbreak on a rainy night by the window. Ennemis Siamois is letting it all go, scrubbing one’s heart clean, ready for a new beginning and Aleas is the latest seduction, the start of a nouveau affair. Baron de chaise is that lovely feeling the morning after when the dark clouds of misery clear the way for a bright radiant sun of love and happiness. And Prete a porter is the declaration of love all over again. And this circle of life is celebrated by Discordance with its soulful overtures (thanks to the gorgeous rendition by David Lewis, the group’s trumpeter and pianist, and other singer – Potzi).

The music takes you on a vicarious trip of repetitive cycles of falling in and out of love, thanks to its carefully manicured musical notes, not one of which is out of place. Only if one knew French so well, one would love to sing along, although I hear that the lyrics are mostly removed from the subject of love or relationships. Every member brings his/her own history and idiosyncrasy, incorporating disparate elements seamlessly and carving out the music’s identity as a nouveau, refreshing French (or world) innovation.

It’s not one of those CDs with one winner and ten losers, so once you pop it in, throw the remote somewhere and let ‘er rip (Although you may just have to find it an hour later to replay the CD, that’s all).

So sit back, turn up the music, turn off the light, pour the drink and let Paris Combo do the singing.

Since I have been so busy working with Julie on different aspects of the festival, I haven't really had a chance to see many events. My parents flew in from Massachusetts yesterday and we got to go see the Brubeck Quartet. They put on an amazing two and half hour long show. I bought one of their CDs and they were nice enough to sign it after the show. It was really great to take a moment to enjoy the fruits of everyone's labor and not just worry about all the little things I had to do in an hour, a day, a week.

We are preparing for the Sculpture Walk reception tomorrow. I hope that everyone can come out, meet some of the artists, enjoy the works around campus. We will be in the Kline Theater Atrium from 5:00 to 6:30. After that, my parents and I are going to rest up so we can go to the cabaret performance at the Blue Parrot!

Cinema Strange is an American death rock group based in Los Angeles, California. Their performances also incorporate film, dance, and visual art. Their music, while originating humbly in 1994 as a high-tempo post-punk expression, has evolved into a bizarre and exciting species of musical storytelling, breaking new ground.

First off, the next Dr. Sketchy's Baltimore will be on July 14, Monday, 7 pm to 10 pm. We think this time slot might work a little bit better than a Sunday afternoon after two days of hard drinking.

Second, I *think* I've updated all the info in the FAQ, sidebar (including broken links), and posts.......if you see something that doesn't make sense, email us. It's amazing how many places you have to update times, dates, etc.

Boundary Bay is bringing the good ole days back this summer! Join Boundary and Krissa Woiwod in the beer garden every Sunday for fried chicken, good beer, and a big tent revival. Most of you know Krissa Woiwod from the Idiom theater where she wrote many plays, performed all of them, and hosted midnight cabarets. Now she's bringing "the Answer" to Boundary Bay in the form of Dottie Partridge starting June 29th. Dottie Partridge was born in a small town near the shores of a wheat field in the middle of America. Since discovering The Answer, Dottie has toured extensively, spreading the message like so much sweet syrup to patrons of pie houses and pancake barns across the middle of America. And now she brings her message to the Northwest. Boundary Bay Brewery is pleased to announce the West Coast premiere of “The Answer”. A self-help revival;, featuring craft projects, singing, tears, balloons, pie, the past, the future and the reason it all hurts so much. Join Dottie and her followers into the depths of your soul and back again.
“We’ve got tonight. Who needs tomorrow?”
The Answer to all your present problems is ready for you.
Are you ready to ask the question?

Hello!

I've finalised my set for the Cabaret next week and for some reason thought I'd post the set list. This really serves no other purpose other than to point out the tracks dotted throughout the set that have been used one way or another in the radio shows.

1. No Escape (featured in episode two)
2. Checkers (featured in episode four)
3. Bridge
4. Nasmicplan
5. Bynari
6. Lakewood Trinsic
7. To the 16th
8. Dytal
11. Quench Acid (Bernard's ring tone in episode one)
12. When Map Night Lap
13. Bambi/Paper Cup (featured in episode five)

Also, here's a pic of what my controller looks like. Bear witness to the most appalling handwriting! In addition, note the painful usage of low-quality masking tape, the horror!

2 MANY DJ'S, SEBASTIaN, BIRDY NAM NAM, FELIX DA HOUSECAT, THE HACKER, CRYSTAL CASTLES, TEENAGE BAD GIRL, ETIENNE DE CRECY, BRODINSKI, BUSY P, DJ PONE, ELISA DO BRASIL, et ça continue...

Ele, nazista, e ela, judia. E claro, os sucessos memoráveis como "Maybe This Time", "Cabaret" e "Money, Money".

Essa é a Nossa Canção (They're Playing Our Song)

Gipsy (Gypsy)

Conta com composição de Jule Styne e Stephen Sondheim, e inclui música memoráveis como "Everything's Coming Up Roses", "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" e "Rose's Turn".

Hairspray

O ano é 1962, a segregação racial e o preconceito ainda assolavam Baltimore.

Into the Woods

Legalmente Loira (Legally Blonde)

Today I went to the cinema ( long time ago since i last did ) anyway i still not into cinemas but all my friends were telling me you have to go to that movie we know you like that style off movies, It's true , the movie (CABARET) was so nice, i really ROFLed at some parts of it, somehow it was so bad making fun ( jokes ) on the ISLAMIC religion, just like when the cabaret's owner was drinking ( لبن لبنيتا) and listening to ( MAWLAY YA MAWLAY ) ( بتاعت يوم الجمعة بعد الصلاة دي) and looking to the guest in the cabaret from the roof and saying ( استغفر الله العظيم ) i just hate that way , islam is not matter of fun or a joke, so far they introduced the idea of ( التوبة) that is admiting your fault and stop it and never back to it, out of my religious view ,....

-) The way they introduced the cabaret, the expressions, people, guards, even guest, the way they talk, .....etc , they did it great , but i wanna know where the hell they brought all that number of girls !!!! and the way they were dressed was great according to the place they work ;) ...

Best things in the movie from my point of view :

The two expressions ( sane3 el laza, sane3 el bahga )

D , he was more than great

Maged el kedwany , was more than great

Khaled el sawy was awesome, especially the way he sing and getting nervous ( ......

Edward was great especially with his hair cut

Didnt like Donia sameer ghanem's way of acting, i recommend sumaya el khashab for this role instead

Director was great ( sorry dont know his name )

The movie's songs :D , if you wanna download them click here

Hala fakher :s

So far I got an experience on how to act if i went to such place, i must be sure that they will convince me that i am the most important person in the place so do all other guests, the way i talk, may be i can find someone who is good inside, i must becarefull of explosions there ;) ,... so far i wont go such place :)

Occasionally on weekends, my spouse and I like to stay up late and watch worthless crap on the TeeVe

Occasionally on weekends, my spouse and I like to stay up late and watch worthless crap on the TeeVee. And occasionally, that worthless crap is Vh1's Metal Mania, a four-hour block of mostly moldy cheese that was on in my viewing market from midnight to four a.m. But as I'm not as young as I used to be, I only made it until two a.m. before I just couldn't take it anymore.

The great thing about watching Metal Mania is that approximately every three minutes or so, you get a good giggle because some video comes on that you'd totally forgotten about, but with that opening chord and first scene, you realize that not only are this song and video pretty funny now, but they were also pretty damn funny twenty years ago.

So here's what occurred to me over two hours of Metal Mania:

1. Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Poison are not, and never were, metal bands. Metal bands are composed of the kinds of guys who look like they're going to break into your house and eat your kids. The only reason Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Poison would break into your house would be to steal your hairspray and mousse.

2. Closely related to #1, between videos we saw a commercial for Poison lead singer Bret Michaels' "highly anticipated" solo album, which I'm assuming is only "highly anticipated" by women waiting to try out for the third season of Rock of Love.

3. Also related to #1: We were treated to the video for Def Leppard's "Love Bites," a song that actually bites every bit as much now as it did twenty-one years ago, but it's always nice to be reminded. This video was followed up by what Vh1 Classic terms a "Classic Current"--an oxymoron that also turned out to be moronic as the video was for "Nine Lives," Def Leppard's unholy alliance with country star Tim McGraw. This song is totally unworthy of either Def Leppard or McGraw which, considering I'm not a fan of either, is really an accomplishment. "Nine Lives" may, in fact, be one of the shittiest songs ever recorded, right up there with "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)," except I'm going to go out on a limb and boldly predict that no one will ever be doing Karaoke to "Nine Lives."

"Nine Lives" is available on the album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, which may be the most un-metal name for an album in the history of album titles. My guess is that they thought about titling the disc Cabaret until they remembered that was already taken.

4. Despite all the hair and makeup and leather pants, guys in heavy metal bands are not a good-looking lot. If most heavy metal band members had done something else with their lives--like, say, getting a nice job at a bank or something--none of them would have ever gotten laid.

5. Geoff Tate of Queensryche (which is more of a prog-metal band than a heavy metal band per se) had without question one of the most incredible mullets of the '80s. From the front, he sort of looked like he had some kind of 1950s ducktail action going on, but then he turns around and--surprise!--he's got his long hair pulled back into a ponytail.

Queensryche also has a completely illogical and unnecessary umlaut over the "y," which I can't figure out how to represent with the word processing tools available to me here. But as we all know umlauts = metal, so it's all good.

6. I think Ronnie James Dio and Klaus Meine of Scorpions may have been separated at birth. Seriously--same hair, they look about the same height...or maybe they're the same person. If anyone's ever seen them together in the same room at the same time and can disprove my theory, let me know.

7. While I got a good chuckle watching everything else on this list, I have to say that Pantera is not, nor was ever, funny. Pantera does not have time to be funny because they are too busy kicking your ass. Every band out right now that plays their instruments really fast and sings songs that consist of lyrics that sound like "RAAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRR" owes a serious debt to Pantera.

Although, on second thought, "Cowboys from Hell," as song titles go, is pretty damn funny.

8. And my final musing, one I so often have whenever I watch anything on Vh1 Classic, is that I'm really freakin' old. Almost every memory I have attached to these songs/videos dates from my junior year of high school or earlier. My hubby and I were trying to remember when "Rock You Like a Hurricane" came out, and the only memory I could conjure up was singing the song outside my church with a few other kids before we went inside to confirmation class (which is just the kind of reception the band was aiming for, I'm sure), which would have grounded the song firmly in 1984.

1984 was twenty-eight years ago, for those of you keeping score. And so on that note, I decided to go to bed, because at my age, I really need to be sure I'm getting plenty of sleep. But I didn't have to worry about missing anything because thanks to Vh1 Classic, the metal will always be there when I wake up.

Okay so I think I briefly mentioned the Cabaret and Burlesque meetup before, but I should probably fill you in on more of the details since I myself will be performing there!

The monthly meetups have been running for just over a year now out of Madam JoJos in Soho (where yours truly was lucky enough to perform...) and are basically a platform for like-minded people, promoters, performers and fans of Cabaret and Burlesque to catch up over a cocktail and meet and greet. The lovely Catherine Crawley (of the Rubadub Social Club) has been ever so clever in setting them about and putting together a great line up time and again. Unfortunately I missed the one year anniversary with the 1940's military theme (victory rolls well and truly on the menu) but I will however be lucky enough to perform at their new venue over on Brick Lane... that's Vibe Live at the Truman Brewery for anyone not paying attention last time!

It really is a night with such a lovely atmosphere - I've said it time and time again, but those BurlyQ folks are some of the friendliest and welcoming that I've had the pleasure to meet. I took my friend Jaz along for her first taste of Burlesque, and over the space of one evening and a crazily low entry price; she got to see the likes of Agent Lynch who popped over to say hello, Annette Betty, Femme Ferale and the return of drag legend Ruby Venezuela. Her favourite were Femme Ferale who did their 40's military act... but I have to say I am biased and went for Agent Lynch's Barbarella as mine!

So if you lovely people want to come along for an affordable night out in one of the trendiest parts of London (what else would you be doing on a Thursday evening...?) and see some top notch performers to boot, then I thoroughly suggest you try and make it down. If the promise of my new business cards wasn't enough to tempt you then surely my heartfelt recommendation should do the trick.

And er... mine's a glass of white thanks darlings...!
