Last weekend I hopped on a 5 am train to Prague, it was a good decision. It is SO beautiful there

Last weekend I hopped on a 5 am train to Prague, it was a good decision. It is SO beautiful there--and they have Starbucks! When we first arrived after 7 semi-torturous hours on the train from Budapest, we stopped at our hostel (Plus Prague) for my first hostel experience. Not bad, all 8 of us were stuffed in the same room together, but it was clean and fine. Then we got on the Metro and checked out the city. It is so incredibly gorgeous. We went to Old Town Square to see the Astronomical Clock, it is a 15th century tower and the clock has supposedly kept time perfectly since it was built. Then we went to the Charles Bridge some amazing night views of the castle. The next day we woke up early and got into the city as soon as we could. Before we left, we ate the hostel breakfast, not a good idea. They LOVE sneaking meat into everything in Central Europe so I ended up with some funky yogurt substance.

Once we got off the Metro, we saw a Starbucks!! So I got my soy chai latte and was in heaven--it made the trudge up the gigantic hill up to the castle much easier. The castle (or "castle complex") is the biggest in the world, and there was so much to see. The views from the top were gorgeous and the leaves of the trees had just started to turn to their fiery autumn colors. Of all the buildings we visited, the cathedral was the most beautiful. The bones of St. Wenceslaus were on display, kind of gross, but the stained glass reminded me of going to see the cathedrals in France when I was young. The rest of the day we were in and out of galleries and armories and finally we went out for dinner, so rewarding after walking around all day. They have a lot more veggie people options in Prague! Afterwards, we caught the final hour of the Salvador Dali exhibit in Old Town Square. It was amazing! Definitely a highlight of the trip. The next morning we stocked up on coffee pastries at Princess and were back on the train for another 7 hours. The Czech countryside was soo beautiful; the cute little hamlets with their closet sized houses and gigantic gardens are straight out of a fairy tale.

[gallery]

Although I loved Prague, it felt so good to be "home" in Budapest. This weekend has been awesome. Friday I rented a bike with a few friends and we rode around Margaret Island in the center of the Danube. Afterwards we headed over to the Sausage & Palinka Festival at Buda Castle. I don't really like sausage or palinka, but it was pretty fun regardless. Then, last night we went to the Hungary vs. Albania soccer match! It was SO fun! We picked up jerseys at the Great Market Hall then headed over, the Hungarians go absolutely nuts for soccer! And the wave, they probably did the wave at least 15 times in the second half alone. They are so crazy at these games that they even had to leave 2 sections around the Albanian fans clear as to avoid any problems. The Hungarian police with their shoulder pads and shields were everywhere, it looked like the Nazi riot but with a lot less camouflage.

Only 2 months and 10 days left. Scary! I love it here, but Wednesday we leave for Dublin and in only a few more weeks I leave for Taiwan to visit Jason. Can't wait!!!

Igualmente he recibido el primer sueldo y he comenzado las clases.

My favorite radio program is the American radio show Michel Martin's "Tell Me More". NPR is an American public radio network. NPR is important because it is inclusive of people of colour. Sometimes when I listen to Canadian radio I notice issues I am concerned about and issues that are imporant to me are ignored.

"Tell Me More" is on www.npr.org and it is an amazing show. Every single Friday there is a segment on "Tell Me More" called the Barbershop where black, Asian, and Latino men discuss politics, pop culture, race issues. Friday's discussion was mainly about John McCain calling Barack Obama "that one".

Although the last post expressed frustration, this has also been a week of some pretty great “

Although the last post expressed frustration, this has also been a week of some pretty great "highs" -- I think I have passed that first-month slump after all. So, in the spirit of "keeping it positive" (a nod to you, Mr. Greg Laski, if you ever un-bury yourself from your Ph.D. studies long enough to check in with your long-lost friend...) a list of little victories that have me smiling this week (oh, and the post title nagy jó jó, literally translates to "big good good" so it basically means very good or great...most commonly used as a declaration, such as a teacher to a student who has done well)

1. I learned to say such things as nagy jó jó in my Beginner Hungarian class at C.E.U. The teacher is a very sweet woman, and the class is like the U.N. come to life: we have two American students, two Romanians, a Moldovan, a Chinese student, an Austrian student, a Serbian student, a Bulgarian student...and one girl who has lived so many places, from the Ukraine to Dupont Circle in dear old DC, she doesn't even know how to answer the question "where are you from?". It's wonderful!

2. My conversation class at Pázmány is really heating up. I started a more student-directed discussion organization, using a rotating schedule for the students to be leaders. As I mentioned before, getting Hungarian students who are used to a lecture-based format to speak is challenging, but they have brought in some great topics, and this week, they talked so much several stayed after to keep it up. Somehow, we even ended up discussing the U.S. financial crisis -- which, while this normally wouldn't be a happy topic, was happy to see in class because it required such complex vocabulary and structure.

3. I got an e-mail from one of my former students from Lord Fairfax Community College, who had been in my English 1 class (i.e. pre-college or remedial writing). I call him my pride and joy because he made such huge strides, and, one year after he struggled with basic writing tasks, is attending a four year college this year. (He worked his butt off, to be sure, and always came for extra help, even after he moved on to another class.) But he sent me an essay he just turned in for a college class at his new school, and it is wonderful -- he was always so thoughtful, creative and bright and seeing

[caption id="attachment_105" align="alignleft" width="128" caption="Gorky and I go to the Operaház to see the ballet"][/caption]

how he has managed to channel that is so amazing. I read it about four times, it made me so happy.

4. Gorky, my colleague from CNDLS came in to run the Budapest Marathon, so we have been having a good time touring around AND he has also been helping me brainstorm teaching ideas. As a former ESL student himself -- Gorky arrived in the Bronx from Ecuador at the age of 13, speaking only Spanish -- and a very experienced teacher of foreign languages, he's been very helpful in devising ways to get my most-quiet class (Civil Rights, as mentioned) to get more engaged and talkative.

[caption id="attachment_104" align="alignright" width="128" caption="Gorky finishes marathon, with a time of 5 hours, 7 min.!"][/caption]

5. I feel I've made some great headway with a few students at the Fulbrightcommission who want to study in the U.S., particularly one girl who is working towards her GRE test this November (and I don't envy any foreign student that task ... I hated the GRE and it was in my native language.)

6. My absentee ballot arrived. And I get to vote in that swingy-est of swing states, Pennsylvania!

7. It is warm. In mid-October. After a late September of gray, chilly rain, the fact that Gorky and I had dinner outside last night is worthy of its own nagy jó jó entry.

So much for now. Liebe Grüße nach Deutschland!

[[[Notes from a tiny moleskine I'm putting together.. The Lonely Planet book is entirely too heavy and huge, so for each city I'm writing practical information, some places of potential interest [of the enthusiastic or obligated sort] along with directions to each from my hostel, and a little map scribbled in. Included here in case I lose the book but am not really in the mood to wander around without guidance. As of right now, I'm hoping to spend the first day/night at Parliament or the Palace, Terror Haza, & Godor, and the second at the Art Museum &/or the Vasarely Museum and A38.
Budapest is divided across the middle by the Danube River, with Buda to the left [looking north] and Pest to the right. My hostel is in the Northern part of Pest, right by the Nyugati Metro Station. Pest seems to be a bit more fun than Buda, while Buda seems to have more historical stuff than Pest.

Ennek megfelelően haza is vágták az illetők a soron következő napjaimat. Tegnap rendőrség, biztosító, ma kárrendező. Jelenleg is itt ülök a kárrendezőnél, ahol egy ügyintéző hölgy mögöttem a huszadik telefonját kezdi úgy, hogy 'szia, zavarlak?', illetőleg minden egyes alkalommal elmondja, hogy ő egy 'szőke nő'. Miközben tele a váró ügyfelekkel. Faszkorbács díjas. Mint mindenki, aki most lett hirtelen szakértője a lopott autóknak.

Most megtapasztalhattam én is eme érzést.

Fra gli organizzatori figurano Budapest Athletic Federation, Budapesti Diàksport Szovetség, City-Park Ice Ring, National Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition, nonché Zrinyi Miklos National Defense University. Sponsor principale è la NATO Public Diplomacy Division, a noi già nota. Altri sponsor: Budapest Publik Transport Ltd., Evidence Hungary, In-Kal Security Ltd., SZTE EHOK, National Youth Club of First Aid Applicators in Hungary e... l’immancabile Nike.

Yes folks, there is a study-abroad program in mathematics. The Budapest Semesters in Mathematics is a stellar opportunity to experience a new culture while also learning mathematics from top-notch instructors. The courses are taught in English, but in a Hungarian style. For example, you start the semester sitting in on all the courses, and then decide in the first few weeks which ones to keep.

Everyone I've known to participate in this program has raved about it. Budapest is a beautiful historic city, and its universities have a long tradition of mathematical excellence. Students in the Budapest program form tight bonds while helping and challenging each other to understand more and more mathematics. (If you would like to be put in email contact with a student who has been to the program, just let me know.)

You can apply to attend BSM any semester in which you are a junior or senior. The application deadline for Spring 2009 is November 1, 2008 (coming up soon) and the deadline for Fall 2009 is April 30, 2009. The website also mentions that you should allow at least 2 months to get a visa.

[caption id="attachment_325" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Kv"][/caption]

Szentendre. Miután Miss Decibel kivesézte a kávézót kívül-belül, sikerült elfogyasztanunk nagy nehezen a capuccinoinkat is.

I like Paul Carr’s book. I like the fact he describes the community of people interested in social media from business perspective. I honour his openness. I admire his almost cruel self-criticism.
Book raised a few questions in my head:
1.	Why some of us want to be famous and/or make money from our projects/blogs?
2.	Why do capital cities tend to generate open field for niche communities like the one described in the book, to the extent of becoming a prisoner of the place we live in (I experienced it myself while living in Budapest)?
3.	If we blog why do we start getting interested in social media in general?
4.	And finally: why do we blog?
5.	How does our social media involvement change our life?
I have no answers to those questions, but the reality described in the book brings me closer to finding them out. It’s enough to look at Abby Lee’s example (nicely put in the context by Carr) to see how life changing our on-line behaviour can be.
I strongly advice everyone involved or interested in PR, marketing and social media read this book. Its extracts were recently published here.Paul Carr is also on Twitter.

I've been spending a rather significant amount of time in parks and on playgrounds lately, which makes it an appropriate time to include this tid-bit from a story I'm pretending to work on. As with most things I enjoy, it's short, simple and sweet.

I imagine this coming from a Willis, a Willis that is perhaps in a point in his life where he is searching for something that will give his life meaning. He isn't exactly confused nor lonely, he's simply in a perpetual state of feeling lost.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I met a woman in a playground I would know it's for real. Playgrounds are peaceful, and in a woman that's all I really want. Peace and a bit of childs play.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no idea when I'll actually fit this into the story I'm only half-heartedly trying to work on, but I hope to someday soon. Also, for the record, if you find yourself in Budapest anytime in the near future, or ever for that case, you must visit their Eastern version of Central Park. It's absolutely magical.

With her with me, we went to Budapest, Hungary (see the photo) and Vienna, Austria in addition to Timisoara. This was Claire's first trip to Europe. With all the trips I've made to Romania, I still have enough frequent flyer miles that I should be able to bring her with me again. It sure makes the business trip more enjoyable and gets me out of the office more. I saw more sites on this trip than the previous seven combined. [Sep 08]

With as many trips as I've made to Timisoara over the past three years, I wish I had made this short 3 hour drive earlier. Budapest has many sites to see and a lot of history to explore. With just one day, I was only able to walk around a small portion of the city. I stayed to the sides of the Danube river, walking on both sides of the river between three of the five bridges of the city. [Sep 08]
