With the launch of the network, we are hoping anti-Zionist

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="410" caption="International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network"][/caption]

With the launch of the network, we are hoping anti-Zionist Jews will take up the Charter and Call-to-Action in ways that are relevant to their location and in partnership with existing Palestine solidarity work. Share your current work and support the building of international campaigns and strategies to collectively confront Zionism.

For the past two years, we have been building an international network of anti-Zionist Jews to support existing and seed new Jewish anti-Zionist organizing in solidarity with Palestinian resistance. The enemy we face is international, and what we can do is limited unless we find ways to work together across boundaries and regions.

We are building an international voice which challenges Zionism and its claim to speak on behalf of Jews worldwide. As an international force, we can contribute to the movement to defeat Israeli colonialism. Click here to read more about the history of IJAN.

Charter of the International Jewish anti-Zionist Network

We are an international network of Jews who are uncompromisingly committed to struggles for human emancipation, of which the liberation of the Palestinian people and land is an indispensable part. Our commitment is to the dismantling of Israeli apartheid, the return of Palestinian refugees, and the ending of the Israeli colonization of historic Palestine.

From Poland to Iraq, from Argentina to South Africa, from Brooklyn to Mississippi, Jews have taken up their quest for justice, and their desire for a more just world, by joining with others in collective struggles. Jews participated prominently in the workers' struggle of the depression era, in the civil rights movement, in the struggle against South African Apartheid, in the struggle against fascism in Europe, and in many other movements for social and political change. The State of Israel's historic and ongoing ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people from their land contradicts and betrays these long histories of Jewish participation in collective liberation struggles.

Zionism-the founding and current ideology that manifested in the State of Israel-took root in the era of European colonialism and was spread in the aftermath of the Nazi genocide. Zionism has been nourished by the most violent and oppressive histories of the nineteenth Century, at the expense of the many strains of Jewish commitment to liberation. To reclaim them, and a place in the vibrant popular movements of our time, Zionism, in all its forms, must be stopped.

This is crucial, first and foremost, because of Zionism's impact on the people of Palestine and the broader region. It also dishonors the persecution and genocide of European Jews by using their memory to justify and perpetuate European racism and colonialism. It is responsible for the extensive displacement and alienation of Mizrahi Jews (Jews of African and Asian descent) from their diverse histories, languages, traditions and cultures. Mizrahi Jews have a history in this region of over 2,000 years. As Zionism took root, these Jewish histories were forced from their own course in service of the segregation of Jews imposed by the State of Israel.

As such, Zionism implicates us in the oppression of the Palestinian people and in the debasement of our own heritages, struggles for justice and alliances with our fellow human beings. (Read more)

Call-to-Action

Our pledge in the Charter will be carried out through our commitments to: 1) solidarity with Palestinian self-determination, 2) participation in global movements to end imperialism, and 3) the extrication of Jewish history, politics, community, and culture from the grip of Zionism.

To these ends, in this historical moment, the IJAZ Network will be a clear anti-Zionist Jewish point of reference to set an ideological pole, open space for non-Jewish anti-Zionist voices, and broaden support for Palestinian liberation.

Towards fulfilling this strategic role, we are calling anti-Zionist Jews to take up the following actions in the world. (Read more)

Class pictures are always good for a few laughs, and they reveal some neat details about what a school used to be like and the kinds of kids who attended it.

This photo shows a first grade class in a Brooklyn public elementary school in 1913. Apparently boys and girls were segregated by gender at that age, because it looks like the class is girls-only. And school must have been serious business, since not one little girl is smiling.

But those hair bows and white dresses sure are cute.

Sixty years later, first-graders have loosened up quite a bit, judging from this picture taken in 1976 at PS 41 in the Village. The class of boys and girls is still large by today's standards, with over 30 kids. Everyone looks pretty goofy, and there are lots of smiles . . . and vintage 70s outfits.

This photo pretty much sums up the over-the-top circus-themed soiree celebrating Diesel's 30th Anniversary.

Anyone who was anyone treked to Brooklyn to celebrate and party to performances by Chaka Khan, T.I., N.E.R.D, Franz Ferdinand, and a very pregnant M.I.A.

Other boldfaced names in attendance included designer Roberto Cavalli, Gossip Girl actors Chace Crawford and Taylor Momsen, sometimes actress and coy lesbian Lindsay Lohan, singer Michelle Williams, designer Richie Rich, gay porn star Erik Rhodes, Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, socialites Genevieve Jones, Patrick McDonald, Arden Wohl, and Fabiola Beracasa, actress/musician Juliette Lewis, Peaches Geldorf, designer Renzo Rosso, designer Alexander Wang, model Helena Christensen, actress Zoe Kravitz, DJ brothers Joel and Benji Madden, actress Khloe Kardashian, and Theodora Richards.

In which The Gay Recluse enjoys shade plants.

Recently we were reminded of a past obsession.

There was a part of us that missed being young, filled with longing, even if -- as we knew at the time -- what we wanted was unattainable.

But the greater part of us was relieved not to be possessed, or constrained, by this former obsession.

It was also painful to think of what had ensued.

But also rewarding, in a way.

At this moment our life seemed very much like our garden, where some of the loveliest flowers bloom late in the season, and only in the shade.

It was an interesting evening. The bands were great and still full of energy as this was the end of their tour.
Unfortunately, I witnessed a very ugly exchange between some concertgoers last night. Some were drunk some were not. In between sets there was a shift in audience (as usual) and some pushing occurred - which is pretty normal - but - then - a very drunk guy used some racial slurs against a non-drunk girl and it was pretty ugly. A word of advice to all who get close to the stage, it's often crowded and people are on top of you - if you come up - expect it and deal with it in a polite way, even if others are not. It will make the evening better for everyone.

Tomorrow–Columbus Day–I’m launching a new blog called Henry’s Obsession. H

Tomorrow--Columbus Day--I'm launching a new blog called Henry's Obsession. Henry refers to Mr Hudson, and obsess he did!. For the next year or so, bowsprite and I will use research and imagination to get inside the head of the first European to travel up the river that bears his name. We plan to post twice a month, or "halfmoonthly." Shouldn't we celebrate a Hudson Day in September rather than a Columbus Day in October?

Take one container vessel --Saudi Tabuk- northbound in the Buttermilk against an ebbing tide and heading for sea. Bring on Moran tugs Cape Cod (portside of Tabuk) and Katherine Turecamo.

As they approach the Brooklyn Bridge, Cape Cod drops back to Tabuk's stern

Katherine no doubts shoves the bow toward Manhattan and Cape Cod presses the stern to Brooklyn.

Plan continues until the ebb tide assists Katherine, and Tabuk rotates counterclockwise.

The ebb is unstoppable,

This is a pic of the singer onstage last night in Brooklyn (lifted off of Brooklyn Vegan):

[caption id="attachment_119" align="alignright" width="169" caption="butternut squash soup, mm mm good"][/caption]

You may have noticed my beloved New York Times chose "Frugal New York" as its main travel feature this weekend. Had I written the article, I wouldn't have considered a $29 burger & beer meal at the Parker Meredian "frugal" traveling (instead, try beer with FREE pizza at the Crocodile Lounge on 14th St.!). But whatev, that's why you have Rachel and I to share all the cheap secrets with you.

On Saturday, our friend Sammy (of awkwardiswawesome.com) and I took a tip from Time Out New York and checked out Brooklyn's fall festival at the Yard. It was a benefit for Just Food, a non-profit that aims to develop a sustainable food system in New York City. Admission was only $12...kids 5 and under were free, which explained the stroller derby, but hey, they gave us something to awwwwat. The event also attracted twentysomething Brooklyn hipsters, who sat on bales of hay and sipped their seasonal beers.

For $4, we snacked on honeycrisp apples from upstate New York and each devoured the creamiest bowl of butternut squash soup we've ever had.

But what we REALLY wanted was pumpkin pie. How can you celebrate fall without it? With none to be found at the Yard, we walked back to the Carrol St. subway stop (take the F from Manhattan) and from there, wandered down Smith St. It was less congested than Manhattan and tourist-free, lined with trendy clothing boutiques and cozy restaurants representing all types of cuisines, from Latin to Indian and Thai. I spotted the Fall Cafe and our eyes lit up -- they must have pumpkin pie, right? Wrong. The wanderlust-deprived dude running shop couldn't even tell us where there would be a nearby bakery! Ah well, the cafe still had a nice, intellectual vibe, making you want to pen your novel or read The New York Times there.

Second try: a French bakery, where they didn't seem familiar with the glory that is pumpkin pie, but they tried to sell us on a porcupine ball of chocolate mousse (yes, the chocolate ball had quills...do the French eat that?). No thank you. Pumpkin pie and pumpkin pie only.

[caption id="attachment_125" align="alignleft" width="180" caption="my my miss American pie"][/caption]

We were almost ready to give up, taking our hunt just one block further. Sammy spotted a graphic novel shop and suggested we browse, but then she grabbed my arm and started pulling me in the opposite direction -- she'd spotted a beacon of hope: a Met Foods grocery store. And there, right by the deli, we found the selection of packaged Entemanns' desserts...which included, lo and behold, a pumpkin pie for $5.49. Score, third time's a charm.

We left Met with our pie, realizing we had no "cutlery," as Sammy put it. So we revisit our French bakery buddies. We showed them our pie, flashed bright smiles, and asked if they knew where we could find some plastic knives and forks with which to enjoy it. They gave us some and assured us that they'll be carrying pumpkin pie by the end of October.

Mission accomplished, we met up with our LES friend Leah at the Gowanus Yacht Club and Beer Garden, which wasn't the least bit as pretentious as it sounds...it felt like hanging out in someone's backyard at a barbecue. Lights were strung overhead, a Tom Petty CD played, and the menu of beer, hot dogs, and burgers is chalked on hanging boards (even the bathrooms have chalkboards encouraging you to be a graffiti artist). It was so laid-back, even a beagle sat on a bar stool to order. Hey, come to think of it, Matt Gross, the New York Times' Frugal Traveler, is from Brooklyn. Wonder if he's been?

the diesel jeans 30th anniversary party went down last night on the brooklyn waterfront. The event was free, but tickets were hard to come by. On a tip, we arrived an hour early before the 9pm doors time. Luckily, we avoided most of the door mayhem which occurred some time between 10pm and 11pm, around the time when the fire marshall closed the doors and would not let in any additional party goers.

The event space was amazing, set directly on a waterfront pier in brooklyn. NYC skyline views a plenty. There were also projectors constantly changing the colors and "look" of the tent. Food consisted of hot dogs, pretzels, funnel cakes and other circus foods. Entertainment between acts was provided by fire breathers, stilt walkers, and acrobats. Performances by M.I.A., hot chip, chaka kahn, franz ferdinand, and TI were short but kept the party going into the wee hours.

brooklynvegan has some great pictures of a very pregnant M.I.A.'s performance
