Shedding his Bright Eyes moniker for the first time, Conor Oberst traveled to Tepoztlán, Morales, Mexico for this self-titled collection, working with a full band and continuing the expansive sound found on the last Bright Eyes release, Cassadaga. The opener, the anti-nostalgic "Cape Canaveral," perhaps the highlight of the album, instantly became my favorite song of the moment: Like much of the rest of the album, it's beautiful without being sentimental, literate without being overly cynical or clever, and possessed of an earthiness and a thorniness all Oberst's own. The music is mostly in the alt-country and folk influenced rock mode, with echoes of the Band and Wilco, but there's also "I Don't Want To Die (In The Hospital)," a high spirited honky tonk rave-up squeezed in right in the middle of the album. The overall mood is relaxed and introspective, and mostly upbeat, as there is more hope and joy than despair and sadness to be found here in the music and lyrics. I resisted Oberst's work for a long time, but I've since been won over, and it's because of the kind of work he's offering up here on this self-titled album. Definitely recommended, and perhaps for some listeners, even needed. Standout cuts: "Cape Canaveral," "Danny Callahan," "Souled Out!!!" and "Milk Thistle."

Spätestens seit Conor Oberst 2002 sein bisher beeindruckendstes Werk "Lifted, Or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ears To The Ground" veröffentlicthe, gilt er als das Wunderkind der Singer-Songwriter Zunft und hat den Ruf eines labilen Sensibelchens. Eine Art juvenile Mischung aus dem Talent von Bob Dylan und der Sensibilität von Kurt Cobain. Die Vergleiche zu Kurt Cobain dürften inzwischen rarer werden, zum Einen, weil Conor anders als Kurt Cobain das 28te Lebensjahr vollendet hat.

Zum Anderen, weil Conor inzwischen erfolgreich den Drogen, in seinem Fall dem Alkohol, abgeschworen hat und nun zufriedener und glücklicher als noch vor fünf Jahren wirkt. Auf dem selsbtbetitelten Album, seinem ersten Soloausflug seit 1996, sind viele alte Saddle-Creek Bekannte zu hören. Neben Bright-Eyes Trompeter Nate Walcott geben u.a. noch Jason Boesel (Rilo Kiley) und Maria Taylors Bruder Macey als Mystic Valley Band ihr Können zum Besten. Das Album zeigt Elemente Conor's frühen Songwritings, die er bei Bright Eyes in dieser Art nicht mehr hätte einbringen können. So wirkt das Album wie eine Art Rückbesinnung auf alte Stärken. Das Wort Stärken kann hier dann auch nicht genug betont werden, denn anders als bei "Cassadaga" gibt es auf Conor's Soloalbum keine Füller. Da gibt es "UpTempo Folkrocknummern", wie "I Don't Want To Die (In The Hospital)" oder "Get-Well-Cards", die riesig Spaß machen und bewschwingt voranpreschen. Daneben gibt es natürlich auch die gewohnt nachdenklichen, ruhigeren Conor Oberst Songs, wie "Eagle On A Pole", oder "Lenders In The Temple", mit an Weltschmerz grenzender Traurigkeit. Der Ruf des Wunderkinds jedoch wird Conor Oberst lange nicht mehr gerecht - denn wer es schafft über mehr als 10 Jahre konstant Alben dieser Qualität und selbstzerstörerischen Ehrlichkeit abzuliefern, zählt zu den ganz Großen!

Es ist kein Bild meiner Heimat und doch zeigt es in etwa Fragmente meiner Heimat. Temperaturen auf Oktoberniveau, der kalte Wind, der durch das gekippte Fenster in mein Büro strömt und von ehemals 27 Grad Zimmertemperatur (der Höchstwert während der heißen Zeiten) auf gerade einmal 21 Grad senkt. Alles wirkt trostlos und ich bin müde. Getragen von diesem Wunsch nach Sommer, nach Sonne und nach dem See. Nach freier Zeit. Um mal wieder einen Tag zu durchleben, an welchem Nichts zu tun noch zu den größeren Herausforderungen zählt.

Ich bin müde von all dem Mist. Warum habe ich mich auch nur für drei Monate angemeldet. Warum fahren denn nun meine Freunde statt Anfang September schon Anfang August, und somit ohne mir. Warum bekomme ich immer die Arbeit, die nicht wirklich anspruchsvoll ist. Ich weiß, ich sollte mich nicht beschweren. Besser viel als wenig anspruchsvolle Arbeit. Das konnte ich ja dieses Jahr auch schon erleben. Und diese knapp 39 Tage überlebe ich wahrscheinlich auch, viel schneller als ich es mir jetzt vorstellen kann. Und erst das, was mich dann erwartet ...

Vom fünften bis zum siebten September werde ich auf dem Donauinselfest sein. Und schon am neunten September das nächste Konzerthighlight in diesem an Konzerthighlights nicht armen Jahr. Denn Conor Oberst, der Sänger der Band Bright Eyes, hält ein Konzert auf Basis seines ersten Soloprojekts. Und das in der Arena. Und das zu einem angenehmen Ticketpreis. Erst heute hat mich der Ticketpreis eines gewissen Herrn Leonard Cohen überrascht. In der billigsten Kategorie käme man mit 100 Euro davon, in der besten mit etwas mehr als 200. Und so beeindruckend seine Musik auch ist (und ich frage mich immer noch warum), so unleistbar werden seine Konzerte wohl immer für mich bleiben.

Und so werde ich wahrscheinlich Anfang September meinen Platz im Studentenheim unsicher machen. Und vielleicht bleibe ich auch gleich eine Woche oder noch länger dort, um mich einzugewöhnen, um Anschluss zu finden, um zurechtzukommen. Und dass der Tag der Nationalratswahl eigentlich der letzte in meinem Heimatort sein dürfte, muss ich mich beeilen, noch rechtzeitig, zum Montag in Wien anzukommen. Aber das liegt ja in der fernen Zukunft. So fern und doch schon wieder sowas von verdammt nah. Und vielleicht klappts dann auch mit dem Wetter.

Das Zitat des Tages: In manchen Bereichen kann die Schneefallgrenze bis unter 2000 Meter sinken. (Mir egal, wenn es dort oben schneit, aber muss man das dann auch noch um halb 7 Uhr früh im Radio sagen? Da wird einen ja ganz bibbrig kalt, allein von dieser Nachricht.)

I've been listening to a lot of Broken Social Scene, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Slint, Bright Eyes, etc... The problem is, I'm not sure if I'm just listening cause I like them, or if I'm trying to impress the invisible indie girls that I don't know. I shouldn't take benadryl until I am really ready to fall asleep.

This is undoubtedly hands down the most exciting release of the year for me, and so when tonight presented the opportunity to get my grubby mits on the leak I did absolutely not have the self-restraint to turn the chance down. For somebody who has shamelessly adored everything Conor has produced for a good 5 years now, I wasn't really expecting it to let me down, although Cassadaga didn't do it for me quite as much as some of Bright Eyes' previous releases, so I was cautious in getting my hopes up too high. Good news though - this album is sensational.

My impression of the Mystic Valley Band's efforts thus far is pretty much without fault. Cape Canaveral begins the album quietly and understatedly, and fairly reminiscent of "Wide Awake" era Bright Eyes - a mellow and steady track which is sleepy yet still optimistic. After track one the album speeds up with several upbeat, more folky songs ("I Don't Want To Die" is surprising to say the least, knowing Conor's penchant for suicide songs).

While the slightly skeptical and often not-quite-making-sense lyrics are out once again in force, it's easy to tell this is Conor straight away, but there are still a lot of surprising elements that set it apart, which has reassured me somewhat since I was more or less expecting this to sound like any other Bright Eyes release despite the new band name. In several songs Conor's voice sounds a lot less polished like it did several albums back, there's a splash of piano thrown into "Eagle On A Pole", and "NYC - Gone, Gone" is something else altogether.

Bright Eyes has always felt like 'travelling music' to me - the albums you scroll straight to on your iPod as soon as you get into the car for a long trip, or on a boat, train or plane - and The Mystic Valley Band promises to be the same. Only "Moab" actually refers to travelling, but the whole album is a journey in itself.

It seems to me Conor has always saved the best till last as far as track listings go, and this album is no exception. "Milk Thistle" stands out probably above every other song. Easily the best lyrics of all, the nicest tone and the most comforting chord progression - very "Lime Tree" which is never and will never be a bad thing.

If anyone out there was waiting for Conor Oberst to let them down they'll have to wait a while longer. Everyone get scouring the internet or looking forward to August 5th - we just found the best album of 2008.

Heard this one recently on WFMU. I was going to post it a couple weeks back, but then other things imposed themselves and, well, thank God Wordpress lets you save these things.

How would you react if you found out, suddenly, one day that you were living in a

DEVIL TOWN

(cue theremin)? You may feel the same way as Daniel Johnston - a little scared, a little lost, maybe more than a little - who wrote and sang the song Devil Town, off 1990's 1990 (of course) and more recently off 2004's Discovered Covered - The Late Great Daniel Johnston. Perhaps the lyrics, which are here at the Johnston's fan site, are important. Perhaps they are not.

This version is performed, so newyorkegg claims, by Omaha band Bright Eyes. The video is newyorkegg's doing; as he/she/it/they note:

So Conor's new effort, Conor Oberst and the blahblahblah, to me, failed.

I've listened to it fully 10 times now, I gave him 10 tries. There is a couple of good songs on there, Lenders in the Temple is lovely, NYC Gone Gone, I enjoy that song, its different to anything I've ever heard him do so thats good!

The best thing about this album is that Oberst seems to have returned to his old vocal techniques in certain parts of songs. That was nice to hear.

I will fully admit that since Lifted I haven't cared for what he's done. Digital Ash was the best of a bad bunch. (Noise Floor doesnt count cause I had all those old songs anyway!) I'm just disapointed that everything I was hoping for hasnt come across. Its a shame too because now I havent enjoyed 3 Bright Eyes albums and now this solo Conor album. Give me pain and brutal honesty Conor or don't give me anything at all.

Sabe quando dá tudo certo? Tudo que você planejou corre em perfeita ordem e cronologia? Foi assim minha aventura paulista solitária. Além de ter visto é claro, um dos shows que mais esperei na vida.

Cheguei ao tal Studio SP e não peguei fila, já que minha entrada tava garantida há pelo menos um mês. A casa é grandinha, com um mezanino bacana, palco mediano, bar e uma nano arquibancada. Pela foto que eu tinha visto na internet, eu achava que era um lugar mais bonito e com um aspecto mais chique, mas mesmo assim era bacana. Comprei uma coquinha e não esperei muito pelo show de abertura.

Sthephanie Toth começou seu show e não me agradou já de cara. Além do meu preconceito habitual com vocais femininos, achei tudo muito alto. Sem contar o fato de uma sapatão não parar de me olhar... Caraca, cara, que raiva! Tive que lançar a carioca favelada e perguntar "Que que é?" .Mas nem sei se ela parou de olhar ou que fim levou o Robin, depois que o Conor subiu no palco, não vi mais ninguém.

Ele subiu vestido a lá Pete Wentz - de casaco e capuz - dando os primeiros acordes de Four Winds do Bright Eyes. Pensei que viria mais gente com ele, mas só veio o batera e um cara que tocava teclado, trumpete e tudo que enche um belo prato.

Esperava ver um Conor cabeludo e estiloso. Um Conor simples e de cabelos mal cortados estava no palco. Um Conor tímido, apesar de chapado. Um Conor com feições de homem e com um nariz maior do que eu imaginava.

Nada de palhetas. Ele toca com a mão.

Pra tirar o casaco, ele entregou o violão na mão de um fã, me surpreendi com isso. E ele baba sim, não é lenda, preste atenção nessa foto de cima.

As lágrimas foram inevitáveis em You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. seguida de Arienette. Risos também, já que ele veio com dois pratos de sushi do camarim e lançou pro público.

Na performance de Lua, ele chamou a Stephanie pra fazer um dueto com ele, achei ruim sim. Ele podia ter tentado Nothing Gets Crossed Out, mas acho que foi improviso sério. A garota tremia mais que vara verde.

Pra acabar, Conor sentou lá no teclado e começou a tocar Lover I Don't Have To Love mas não gostei muito, senti MUITA falta do baixo.

Prima di chiamarsi Blind Guardian, i quattro musicisti di Krefeld (André Olbrich e Marcus Dork alle chitarre, Hansi Kürsch alla voce e al basso e Thomas Stauch alla batteria) pubblicarono nel 1986 col nome di Lucifer's Heritage una demo dal titolo Symphonies Of Doom che però non procurò loro un contratto discografico. Nel 1987, dopo aver cambiato formazione (al posto di Thomen Stauch subentrò Hans-Peter Frey, mentre Christoph Theissen prese la chitarra ritmica al posto di Marcus Dork), uscì la demo Battalions of Fear. Nel 1988 arrivò il contratto con la No Remorse Records, e con il rientro di Stauch e l'inserimento di Marcus Siepen alla chitarra ritmica la band fece uscire il primo album: Battalions Of Fear, con il nome di Blind Guardian. Il nome del gruppo deriva dal titolo della canzone "Guardian of the blind", ispirata al romanzo It di Stephen King. L'anno successivo pubblicarono il loro secondo album dal titolo Follow the Blind con la collaborazione del loro amico Kai Hansen, chitarrista degli Helloween, successivamente (e attualmente) cantante e chitarrista dei Gamma Ray. Commento & Voto : Mi inchino innanzi a codesto capolavoro, poesia d'altri tempi mescolata ad atmosfere epiche. Canzoni come "Bright Eyes" ; "Imaginations from the Other Side" ; "A Past and Future Secret" sono perle di rara perfezione, "Another Holy War" ; "I'm Alive" ; "The Script for my Requiem" e le rimanenti, completano un album perfetto, esente da difetti. Chiunque possegga una minima cultura musicale, non può non essere d'accordo con quanto appena detto. Per quanto mi riguarda, Imaginations from the other side è tra i 10 album metal più belli di tutti i tempi.
