It was Peter Drucker who revealed undeniably that business was a science that could lead to predictable results. The way he did so was by collecting and systematizing all the knowledge he could gather on the subject and then testing hypotheses. After much deliberation on the science of systems and the science of business. I present the Physics Framework above and the Enterprise Framework below. As one physics Nobel laureate said, "If you aren't doing physics, you're stamp collecting!"

I am working to refine my framework table for a lay audience. It is a vocabulary for a business system. Like the Linnean system, by using the intersection of the row and column (two terms) I can identify any operation of the system. Still needs work, but its getting there.

It is based on an associative (node and link) architecture not a relational (table and relationships) architecture.

At first glance this might be regarded as a Zachman Framework. The columns by convention are called focuses. The rows called perspectives. The interrogatives make up the column header. John Zachman offered some poorly chosen row headers which I've replaced. There are two major differences. First, it requires an additional focus as part of the enterprise, the Market which is measured in potential profit. It's time for the academics and bureaucrats to stop turning up their noses to the source of their existence: a market that will pay in currency to fatten their budgets. Second, REVISE, the nodes, are something obvious to Einstein; RELATE, the links, something obvious to Drucker (remember the links are verbs); REPORT, the node and link attributes, should be obvious to Thomas Jefferson; RECORD, the databases, to Carnegie; REGARD, the datatypes, to Turing; REPOSE, the ordinality, which remembers whats related to what, REVEAL, the cardinality, full of exceptions to the enterprise.

Mole National Park was absolutely fantastic. After being so close for so long and entirely unable to get there, I had built it up in my head a tremendous amount and when I got there it lived up to my expectations spectacularly. I ended up being driven by Frank, one of the company drivers, after hiring the best car in Nsawkaw (which was still pretty crap). It cost 200GHc for the trip which is about £100 but the company footed the bill for absolutely everything except the beers i had by the pool in the evening! The drive took about 4.5 hours to the Mole Motel, an absurdly name seeing as it is about 50 miles from any main or tarred road, down a seriously crap dirt road. The motel is built on an escarpment overlooking a large watering hole and grassy plain which means you can sit on the viewing area, cold beer in hand, and see elephants, kob, bucks, warthogs and all sorts. Being the wet season it was considerably harder to see wildlife as there is grass everywhere and the animals do not need to return to the watering holes to drink and bathe, but nonetheless there was plenty to see just from the motel.

I was there for one night and so I went on a guided walk into the bush twice, in both the afternoon and the next morning. You were not allowed to walk into the bush without an armed guide but it was only 50p an hour so did not exactly break the bank. On the first trip we saw two elephants as well as assorted antelope type things and warthogs. It says on big signs that you are not to go closer than 50m from an elephant which the guide obviously hadn't read as he happily took us to within 25m. With one he took us to sit on the edge of a village hut which was in the path of the elephant and we sat there while it passed within 10m in front of us. They are absolutely awe-inspiring creatures.

The motel was rather nice, although power only ran from 7 til 10 in the evening. There was a pool from which you could see the view and the food was really good. When I first arrived I walked through the pool area and was quite shocked to see so many white people. Over the past month or so I've only seen two others and to suddenly be surrounded by 20 was quite strange. In the evening I got chatting to some English students who'd all come out here volunteering for NGOs and were travelling for the last part of their stay. I was definitely occupying the moral low-ground being here with a gold exploration company! The next day I met a chap who'd come here from Nottingham on public tranport (except Mauritania which he'd flown over because of the coup). He only had 10GHc which would not have even got him away from the park or allowed him to stay so I changed him some more, which I have had no call to use as the company keeps paying for everything!

[caption id="attachment_417" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Mosque at Banda Nkwanta"][/caption]

From Monday to Thursday I have been at Tinga collecting samples and logging drill core, which is immensely tedious. This time I was on my own in the sense that a geologist was not coming with me but I still had an entourage of driver (Kinsfort), technician (Prince) & cook (Abdullai). Once again I was staying at Bole, this time in accommodation that was actually bigger and more convincingly insect-proof than Nsawkaw, with an en-suite. Unfortunately the shower, far from having hot water appeared to have only specially chilled water judging by how icy it was.

The first whole day logging core was also the day that the rainy season decided to start with full force.

The rain was torrential resulting in a soggy day and great difficulty getting back to Bole, almost getting stuck 4 times. In the evening Kinsfort promised to take me ‘out on the town’ in Bole which is essentially a village of mud huts and shacks. I envisaged sitting in one of the numerous shacks with a blue & white fence indicating that it is a ‘drinking spot’ but instead we went to a ‘European style’ bar that was on a petrol station forecourt. Despite this it was surprisingly good fun to go for a drink as I actually know them all quite well now and they do their utmost to make me welcome. The only exception was having to deflect a few light-hearted accusations about the English and ‘the white-man’ and the associated trail of destruction and hypocrisy.

[caption id="attachment_410" align="alignright" width="300" caption="A truckload of people"][/caption]

The next day was dry and that meant the problem of onco flies. The ‘thoos buggas’ previously referred to are in fact called onco flies, although onchocerciasis (river blindness) has been largely eradicated in Ghana meaning they are only a pest as opposed to life-threatening. At the field camp they are incredibly abundant and surround you at all times, you cannot feel them biting but they leave a bleeding mark which rises to an itchy lump after about a day and seems to stay for about a week and a half. Luckily my insect repellent effectively prevents them from biting which meant I was bite free despite having a permanent irritating cloud of the buggers around me. There was one rather critical lapse, however, which was the indirect result of the goat kebab I had the night before.

[caption id="attachment_419" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Nigerien cow"][/caption]

Halfway through Wednesday I was suddenly the victim of surprise diarrhoea which saw me running into the bush with my bag, containing bog roll etc. This meant I rapidly exposed parts of me that had no insect repellent on them, with good reason as the repellent is so strong that it melts plastic including my glasses frames. Unbeknown to me, my resident cloud of onco flies set to work and within the 20-30 seconds of exposure they had bitten me over 10 times on a certain external organ which I would rather not have been bitten on (you will be glad to hear I am not going to put up a picture). Further goat kebab problems were in the safety of the camp toilet which consists of half an upturned oil drum with a hole in the top, over a 100m deep drill hole. Despite that, we decided to call it an early day and I retreated to my en-suite to nurse my stomach and cope with the wildly painful-itchiness from my encounter with the onco flies.

[caption id="attachment_412" align="alignright" width="225" caption="Hippo belly-slide track"][/caption]

On the way back to Nsawkaw Kinsfort took me to see the site of the Bui dam, where the Chinese are building a hydroelectric dam to provide power for Northern Ghana. They were blasting so we couldn’t go anywhere near, or get a view but we did walk down to the Black Volta which was in serious flood having washed away half the Chinese equipment the day before as they were trying to build a bridge over it. We also saw evidence of hippopotami but none were actually in sight, which was a shame.

On the road I got out at Banda Nkwanta, where it was market day, to take a picture of the mosque and had a brief attempted conversation with a cattle driver who was from Niger. It turns out all the cows in northern Ghana are actually from Niger and the Nigeriens (Knee-ger-iens as opposed to Nigh-geer-ians from Nigeria) walk them here during the dry season in Niger to graze on the Ghanaian grass before walking them back when it is over. It is 200 miles from Niger to the Ghanaian border, and at least another 200 to Banda Nkwanta.

The insects were definitely worse in Tinga as I'd been warned. The most irritating were the ‘sweat bees' which were non-biting black flies presumably the same as those ones you see on people's faces on the news. Harmless as they are, amongst their midst are flies which the Ghanaians insist are called ‘thoos buggas' in English (I must say i'm not entirely convinced). Thoos Buggas cannot be felt biting you, but the leave a bleeding patch and then in a day or two it rises into an irritating red lump which seems to last indefinitely. The result is that you have to try in vain to shoo everything including the sweat bees which only results in more sweat and therefore more sweat bees. Unfortunately neither of those two are deterred by the super-strong insect repellent I have bought which has melted my glasses frames and the plastic labels off all the bottles I have. Crucially it does seem to work on mosquito's with their promise of malaria, and I'm never really out and about at dawn or dusk. But I do have to deal with 'thoos buggas'.

While at Tinga I stayed in a village an hour's drive north called Bole (bol-ay). We arrived there at about 5 when it was still light and so Mike agreed to take me round to have a look at the village. It was pretty uninspiring except for it contained one of half a dozen West Sudanese style mud and stick mosques that exist in Ghana. No-one knows how old they are as the current tribe moved in 300ish years ago when they were already there, unoccupied. The atmosphere at the mosque was quite different to other places where the kids have always been incredibly lively and loud. Here they were doing their level best to look sorrowful, evidently knowing they were at a tourist attraction , all you get is wide eyes and requests like ‘you must put something in' while they're carrying buckets. Despite that the mosque was pretty interesting and the Imam let us inside and on the roof and allowed me to take pictures, which is pretty rare according to the guide book. We also saw the state-owned Cocoa Research Institute which wasn't exactly wildly exciting. I have worried the Ghanaian geologists by being so sick a few days ago and they actually brought Abdullah along from Nsawkaw to cook ‘continental' food for me. I also think they've told him to make sure he cooks meat very thoroughly, so when they went off to get their food from a chop bar in the evening I had to retire to my room and tuck into goat stew, presumably supposedly approximating a ‘western dish'.

Tomorrow I head off to Bole (pron. bollay) for 3 days as it is closer to Tinga, where my project is based. I will not have internet there as we're staying in village accommodation, apparently the insects are much worse (they have been off to buy me more longsleeved shirts especially, so I think they are serious). I will also have to eat local food, which is apparently as unhygenic as it is peppery, so the chance of another vomit+other run is high (no pun intended), hopefully in a week or so my stomach will have got used to the stuff.

Za Dziennikiem:

Weź osobistego trenera do łóżka

Aktywność w czasie zbliżenia powoduje zwiększone spalanie kalorii, a więc chudnięcie.

Podczas miłosnych uniesień tętno podskakuje do 180, krew niesie aż o 40 proc. więcej tlenu.

Dodaje sił i pewności siebie. Gruczoły wydzielania wewnętrznego produkują naturalny "hormon szczęścia", endorfinę, zwalczającą ból, kojącą stresy. Seks poranny dodaje sił, pewności siebie, obniża napięcia psychiczne, zapewnia ostry start do aktywnego, udanego dnia.

Udane i urozmaicone życie intymne podnosi wydolność organizmu.

No chyba, że będzie zazdrosny.

Seks zamiast porannej gimnastyki

Koniec z chorobami
Wystarczy kochać się trzy razy w tygodniu, by zmniejszyć ryzyko zawału serca. Bo podczas miłosnego uniesienia poprawia się nam krążenie i ciśnienie krwi - pisze "The Sun".

Wystarczy seks! Dzięki niemu lśnią nam włosy, a nienaganna cera ma zdrowy, brzoskwiniowy odcień. No i znika zmora wszystkich 30-latek. Pierwsze pojawiające się zmarszczki. Czy trzeba więcej argumentów, by przestawić budzik na wcześniejszą godzinę?

I jeszcze jeden z Dziennika:
Kochać? Właśnie, że warto!
Wykańczająca depresja, pulsujący ból

I jeszcze jeden z Dziennika:

Kochać? Właśnie, że warto!

Wykańczająca depresja, pulsujący ból głowy, szpecące pryszcze i postarzające zmarszczki - zakochani nie mają czego się obawiać. Miłość to wszechstronny lek i kuracja upiększająca w jednym.

Jak każdy narkotyk znacząco poprawia on samopoczucie. Osoby trafione strzałą Amora znienacka radośnie chichoczą i dostają nagłych ataków euforii, właśnie z powodu wzrostu jej stężenia w mózgu.

To znowu działanie boskiej fenyloetyloaminy.
A o ile to przyjemniejsze...

Piękniejesz bez pomocy chirurga plastycznego
Miłość to lepsza kuracja odmładzająca niż botoks i lifting razem wzięte.

Zakochanym niestraszne choroby cywilizacyjne.

I mają szansę zostać pupilami nawet najbardziej czepliwego szefa.

Twoje serce bije jak dzwon
Przytulanie to doskonały trening dla serca. Podczas romantycznych wzruszeń wzrasta poziom oksytocyny, która usprawnia pracę serca. Objęcia, głaski i ściski to doskonała alternatywa dla tych, którzy wolą nie odwiedzać lekarza specjalisty.

Koniec z grypą i przeziębieniem

Miłosne igraszki to najlepszy środek przeciwbólowy.

Będziesz żyć długo i szczęśliwie
A nuż zadziała?

The Fourth Biennial International Colloquium on the Chadic Languages BICCL has just taken place from

The Fourth Biennial International Colloquium on the Chadic Languages BICCL has just taken place from 30th - 31st October 2007, at the University of Bayreuth. Here is a report on this event from a participant's (my own) perspective. Most of the participants arrived already on Monday 29th. We had a first informal meeting in "Schinner Braustuben" and it was very nice to meet former colleagues and get to know some new ones.

Most of us spent the night in the pension "Zum Edlen Hirschen" or in the "Gästehaus Elfert", two small B&B Guest Houses in walking distance from the conference venue, which was at the Africa Centre of the University of Bayreuth ("Iwalewa House").

The conference started on Tuesday morning, with about 30 participants. In the small conference room we were surrounded by very impressive photographs of Angolan youngsters.

After Dymitr Ibriszimow's opening remarks the morning session, which was chaired by Henry Tourneux, started with a paper by Ekkehard Wolff, who proposed to us "Another look at ‘internal a' plurals in Chadic".

This was followed by Vaclav Blazek's paper on "All Chadic Lakes", in which he compared a number of words associated with the meaning "lake", "river" etc. found in Chadic languages.

The third paper was by Theda Schumann, who spoke about "Agents and Agent Nouns in Chadic".

After a short coffee break, Victor Porkhomovsky gave a report on the "AAKTS database and KinShIP computer programme for processing Afroasiatic kinship terms and systems".

Next was my own paper on "Blogs, Podcasts, Wikis etc. - what the Web 2.0 has to offer for (Chadic) Linguists".

After our lunch break in Café Engin's Ponte near Bayreuth's "Canale Grande", we started the afternoon session, chaired by Victor Porkhomovsky.

The first paper was presented by Heike Andreas, who gave us a first impression of her research on Nyam, an isolated language of the Bole-Tangale group.

It was followed by Roger Blench's presentation on Kirya-Konzəl (a.k.a. as Fali). This presentation can be downloaded from Roger's website.

After the coffee break, we listened to three more papers. First, Jim Roberts talked about "Palatalization and Labialization in Eastern Chadic verbs." Next was Gian Claudio Batic's paper on "Imaginative Dimension and Experiential Constructions in Hausa and Bole". The final paper for the day was presented by Olga Stolbova, who talked about "Plural in Kirfi and in Chadic".

In the evening, we met at another Brauhaus (I can't remember the name) and I convinced my three SIL colleagues Jim, Sean and Joy to try the "Leberkäse", which they did and liked.

The second day's morning session was chaired by Philip Jaggar. It started with a paper by Georg Ziegelmeyer "On the Linguistic Influence of Hausa and Kanuri on Bade and Ngizim."

Next, Doris Löhr presented some results from the Loanword Typology Project of the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig. Ari Awagana, Doris Löhr and Ekkehard Wolff have been asked to contribute data on loanwords in Hausa and Kanuri.

The third paper was by Sergio Baldi, who talked about "The yi + noun verbs and their positioning in Hausa"

After the coffee break, two papers were presented by our African colleagues:

Baba Mai Bello talked about the "Hausa Language and the Perception of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria", while Balarabe Zulyadaini presented "An evaluation of L1 and L2 Hausa cognitive structures".

After the lunch break (we ate "soul food" in a nearby restaurant), in the final session chaired by Ekkehard Wolff, we heard three papers on different aspects of Kotoko lects. First, Sean Allison talked about the "Derivation of the PAM system of Makary Kotoko". Next was Joy Ruff's paper on "Tone in Lagwan Verbs". The final paper of the day and the conference was presented by Henry Tourneux, who talked about "La proposition relative dans les langues dites 'kotoko'".

After Dymitr Ibriszimow's closing remarks, there were a few things to discuss: The next BICCL will be in Leipzig around June/July 2009. The papers for the proceedings of BICCL 4 should not exceed 12 pages. Longer articles could be published in the series "University of Leipzig Papers on Africa" (ULPA). Formatting directions will be sent to the participants by email.

During the afternoon, Joe McIntyre had arrived from Hamburg with his guitar. In the evening, we had a social gathering in a pizza restaurant and sang "oldies" in a cheerful mood.

A big "Thank you" has to go to the organizers of this beautiful conference. I already look forward to the one in Leipzig.

If you want to see the pictures I took during the conference, just visit www.flickr.com/photos/hausaonline (sorry for the red eyes on some of them, the light in the conference room was poor).

If you also have pictures to share, let us know where they are stored (don't forget, Web 2.0 is about sharing). I look forward to your comments,

For the readers of this Blog, please understand that it is not my intention to offend anyone nor to

For the readers of this Blog, please understand that it is not my intention to offend anyone nor to criticize others. My wish is to share my experiences as honestly as possible, mind you from my perspective. I was brought up in a different culture and I understand that often times there are cultural miss-cues, however there is a difference between being tolerant and “turning the other cheek”.

This morning I jumped out of bed frantically afraid that I was late for my appointment with the police. I had promised Tania that I would meet her at the police station again, this time at 7:30am as her witness. Seriously, I am experiencing Addis Ababa and Ethiopia from all angles. God truly wants me to see “the Bigger picture”. And, I thank Him for that.

My coworker and friend, Tania, has been having a terrible time with her housing arrangement. Though she lives in an upscale area and she pays a huge amount for the house, she is harassed constantly by her landlady and neighbors. Actually, most of my friends who have rented houses in that area or are currently living there, all have problems with their landlord.

Bole Homes is known as an upscale and peaceful area. It is to some extent. Situated across from the airport, there are always plenty of police in addition to the guards watching over the neighborhood. Beautiful gates and well-pruned bushes line the paved roads. The scents of rose bushes and Calil lilies welcome you as you walk past stately houses. It's luxury compared to the majority of Addis. However, the landlords are children of a different generation. A generation that believes they are better and of higher class than others. A generation that does not tolerate other cultures and strips others of their freedom (e.g. They referred to me as the "Korean..Chinese...Japanese...THING"). They have the funds to send their children abroad for school, therefore "apparently" are more educated than others. They bully their tenants out of the house upon receiving their rent. They verbally harass tenants and enter your home when you are not there. They trespass and do not allow visitors. It's incredible how “feudal” they are.

Last Friday, Tania's landlady and her neighbors trespassed, verbally harassed and physically assaulted Tania in front of myself and a few other friends. We all knew about the things this lady was doing, and in fact our Office knew about them too. However, they had chosen to dismiss Tania's complaints and had blamed it on “misunderstanding” and “cultural differences”. This was the first time the landlady laid her hands on Tania; that was enough. We had to enforce our rights, and that's exactly what we did.

Let me tell you, finding a police station was a huge challenge. I understand that Addis Ababa is revered as one of the safest if not the safest city in Africa. But still, you have to have clearly visible, easily accessible and enough police stations to serve your community. If going to the police was such a huge ordeal, how do you expect people to seek help? Most people here don't even know what the emergency phone number is! And if you ask for the nearest police station, they give you vague directions because they don't even know exactly where it is. Anyhow, after asking locals and confused traffic police for more than an hour, we finally arrived at a police station. I really don't know what we would have done if we were not accompanied by our Ethiopian friends. We probably would've been just a bunch of stubborn and desperate, yet hopeless foreigners roaming the streets of Addis in the blanketing darkness of the night.

In the poorly lit police station, we tried to file a complaint. However, the police officers kept on bullshitting us in hopes that Tania would just walk away like most foreigners. Sorry, but they were dealing with people who knew their rights and who were prepared to enforce their rights at all costs. Was it so wrong to fight for our rights? Was it naïve to believe that the police could and would help us? Is it absolutely impossible for foreigners to be victimized? Incredible. We were dealing with poorly trained police who did not want to enforce the law. Wtf?!

When another coworker arrived to try and settle the situation, I felt ashamed that I even worked with this man. He strolled in smelling like alcohol, and before we could tell him what had happened, he dismissed us and told the police officer, “Chigra yeulem, baka...”, which means “No problem...enough”. Another foreigner friend and I immediately said, “No, it's not chigra yeulem!”. He was surprised we understood him. He was clearly not all there, because he started intimidating the witnesses and picking fights with us. Instead of consoling Tania and protecting her, which he should have done as a superior in the office, he called the landlady immediately and sided with her. It was evident that they had some sort of agreement under the table. It was incredible how stupid he was. He threatened all of us and he was doing all of this in the presence of the police officer. Anyways, the police officer pulled him aside and not long after, our coworker left.

The officer reassured us he would file the complaint tomorrow, during “office hours”, and they would proceed with arresting the landlady. However, when Tania went back the next day the same officer refused to take the complaint and just kept on referring to our coworker. In other words, they had made a deal. Another under the table agreement. The next officer actually indirectly asked Tania for money. Tania continued to persist and mentioned her VIP friends in the African Union, so finally another police officer filed the complaint but requested her witnesses to come on Monday morning, today.

When I arrived at the station this morning, everything seemed unfamiliar. Perhaps, everything looked different under the illumination of the hope-filled morning sun. For the fourth time, we were going to try to tell our story. It was evident that the police did not know the law or their protocol for that matter, so we brought another Ethiopian friend who was a practicing lawyer to the station. He was extremely unwelcomed by the police, but they knew they had to listen to him.

As we waited for our individual turns to be questioned, we sat with locals on a squeaky bench in a long and narrow hallway. I hadn't noticed the first night I visited the station, but the walls were all painted a cheery sky blue. How nice. Perhaps they knew the colour blue was a calming colour and would ease the long line of irritated people waiting to plead their cases.

Anyhow, my eyes gravitated to a lone poster on one of the walls. An anti-corruption poster that read, “----- Corruption is Instrumental in the Development of the Country!”. Actually, someone had ripped off the first word, most likely “Fighting”. That poster said it all. It was so symbolic. Daily, police officers walk past that poster numerous times, yet no one has bothered to remove it. Why? Mentality. Corruption is everywhere and deeply rooted. Fighting it is clearly not a priority on the front lines even though this government is trying hard to change that mentality.

Like a lot of things and in reference to my previous post, posters and other PR things are great, but in order for any type of sustainable positive change to take effect, everyone's mentality needs an overhaul. It's one thing that I can sit here in my office all day to criticize and make suggestions on how Ethiopia can improve, but it's entirely different when Ethiopians tell me this is exactly why their country is regressing.

Don't shoot the messenger.

P.S. The story gets worst, but due to the sensitive nature of this story I shall leave it at that.

P.P.S. This past week has been full of first-time experiences, challenges, surprises and lessons in life. That's precisely why I like living in Addis, I'm never bored. You come across things everyday that challenge and really push the essence of who you are to the max. But when it's all over, I know myself that much more! It's a workout, a rollercoaster and ultimately a trippy experience...all from God. Now how cool is that?! More stories to come...

Throughout the Tinga area the ground is periodically disturbed into small mounds and pits, mostly grown over, which are the work of the Galumsay. Galumsay is a Ghanaian corruption of the English ‘gather and sell' and they are illegal small-scale miners, who sift the soil or follow veins in pursuit of small quantities of gold. On the second day in Tinga we visited an active Galumsay camp and I was amazed at the size of the operation, as were Mike and Richard who hadn't realised how many Galumsay had arrived. Coming from all over West Africa, evidently word had spread that there was gold in the Tinga area and the camp was a sprawling mass of grass huts, complete with families and what looked like small shops. We had to sit with the informal chief of the Galumsay and then went to have a look at the Galumsay workings around the encampment. They were digging the soil into special trays and then washing it down over old bits of door mat, which would collect the gold, then they would wash the mats and gather the gold which came off. The extent of the workings was huge and as far as you could see there were more Galumsay digging away. There is evidently quite a bit of gold around as they were all too willing to proudly show their days findings. The company owns the mineral rights for the land, but allows the Galumsay to operate provided they don't mess with the company's trenches and sample pits, or use machinery. The presence of the Galumsay keeps the company interested in this area as there is evidently gold coming from somewhere, but they have completely failed to pin down the stratigraphic unit.

I ended up heading up to Tinga/Bole a day late, there was a problem with the water tank at the Tinga field camp and so alternative accommodation had to be found. I went up to Tinga and the field on Wednesday, stayed overnight in Bole and returned on Thursday via Tinga and the field again. Mike, the head geologist, drove me for the three hours it took to get there, crossing the Black Volta which appeared to be in flood. The further north you are the more notably the landscape changes to typical savannah (or at least what savannah should look like, in my mind). There is mostly shorter grass and fewer trees, the acacia trees looking like blown out umbrellas and the occasional giant baobab tree. The villages noticeably change from having prominent churches to having prominent mosques.

After picking up a machete-wielder in the village we went straight into the field. The heavy rain that had fallen at Nsawkaw on Tuesday had evidently also fallen at Tinga and the land cruiser nearly got stuck twice in deep water and Sammy (the Tinga machete guy) had to get out many a time to hack through trees that had fallen in the tracks. Despite some of them being a foot thick he made pretty quick work of it! We spent the day looking at the few outcrops that appear in Tinga and then went to the company field camp where the drill core is kept to look at that. The ‘problem with the water tank' turned out to be that the 14ft high wooden frame it was built on had toppled over, completely destroying it.

The second day contained much the same level of excitement although we spent considerable time with some artisanal miners and then before we headed back Mike and Richard had to go and see the chief of Tinga village. Apparently the previous chief had died several weeks ago and it is customary for anybody working on the lands to seek the permission of the chief. As I was there I tagged along and managed to take a sneaky forbidden photo from my camera resting on my notebook. The audience with the chief seemed very formal and involved a great deal of handshaking and sitting in a circle with the elders of the village under a large shea-nut tree. Everything was said in Twi to Sammy who then said it to the chief in the local tongue. The sole reason for this was that it is traditional that outsiders do not speak directly to the chief, the fact the chief spoke perfect Twi and English and understood everything that was going on did not seem to put them off at all.
