Been a couple days since I’ve posted, but this is certainly worth recognizing. Tomorrow I’m heading over to College Park to watch the Noles take on the Terps in a pivotal game which will help determine who will be going to the ACC championship.

This is the first Florida State game I’ll actually be seeing live. It should go without saying that I’m beyond stoked.

People have asked me, “Charlie, you’re rooting for Florida State and yet you live in Maryland?”

And I’ve said to them, “Yeah, because FSU kicks ass.”

So true. If the Noles beat the Terps and then BC beats Wake Forest, then FSU will be playing in the ACC Championship. And me? I’ll be happy as hell. Not like that has any impact on the outcome, but whatever.

Check the clocks, kiddos. At this time tomorrow I’ll be smashed in the Terps student section repping out the team I was born to. Florida State. If this is my last post… two words: worth it.

Upon first listen of Kanye West’s newest effort and 4th studio album, 808’s and Heartbreaks, some may see it merely as an auto tuned love letter. In the simplest of terms, that wouldn’t be an inaccurate assessment. But may I suggest that you take a deeper listen? If you do, you may find a futuristic-retro-pop-hop sound that is both eclectic and infectious.
  Mr. West tells an earnest tale of love lost from the perspective of a man who is struggling to mend his broken heart. He takes the listener on a journey through the much publicized break up with his longtime girlfriend. West crafts a soundtrack for the journey founded in the trunk rattling, eardrum shattering 808 bass. Trust and believe, this isn’t you Uncle Luke’s 808. No, Ye isn’t satisfied with simply breaking window glass. He wedges the heavy bass between course digital effects and vocals. He sprinkles in a few symphonic strings and emotional keys. He then adds a dash of traditional tribal drums with a side of pop synths. And that, my friends, is a recipe for a classic.
Now, I could give you a track by track break down, but instead, I’m going to give you a few of the shining moments (and it was hard because the album shines all the way through). On Welcome to Heartbreak, West speaks on how his blind ambition has lead to many material possessions, but has kept him from obtaining the intangibles that make life worth living. Amazing hands us more of the braggadocios shit that we love about Kanye. However, my personal favorite is Street Lights, a melancholy track that just might bring any struggling young man to tears.
To wrap it all up, Kanye has put together an excellent album that is both refreshing and addictive. Now I may be a little partial as I’ve recently experienced a little Heartbreak of my own so it’s been serving as my own personal soundtrack. I’m sure that if you give it a good listen, 808’s and Heartbreaks will become yours too.

London Drugs has been a mainstay in the Vancouver area for a long time.  They just recently closed the doors on the location of the first London Drugs on West Broadway near Heather.  One of my friends who used to work for them says that particular store outsold all of the other stores in the province by almost double.  Well, they have now moved down a couple blocks closer to the corner of Cambie and Broadway.

London Drugs really is an icon in Western Canada for me.  When I moved out east to Toronto, I really missed London Drugs.  Shoppers Drug Mart is nice and has its own qualities, but nothing beats browsing around a London Drugs for everything from toiletries to computers and from food to photos.  They are a truly successful business in BC.  The H.Y. Louie company was featured recently in the Vancouver Sun.

They are probably the first store to open in the new Cross Roads building, aptly named for an ever increasingly busy intersection.  Royal Bank looks like their new branch is also about ready to open up, as well.  The furniture looks like it’s in and the ads are already hanging in the windows.  Later on, Lululemon, koolhaus, and Whole Foods are expected to join RBC and London Drugs in that complex.  I think outside of downtown, there hasn’t been this large of a gathering of major retailers in one area in the City of Vancouver.

With the construction of the Canada Line and the new Broadway/City Hall station, this intersection is destined to be a major commercial and retail hub, as well as a major transit interchange.  Already, major big box stores like Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Save-On Foods, Winners, Homesense, and Best Buy have all moved into the area just north of Broadway.

Back to London Drugs.  They definitely seem to have a winning formula that definitely works for them.  The H.Y. Louie group even gives over $700,000 annually back into the community.  London Drugs even has an innovative warehouse design in Richmond.  A video by Our Sustainable Region can be found here.

Mission Hill might be the largest entirely-within BC winery and makes everything from inexpensive wines (blended from imported and BC grapes) using several different labels, through to the ultra-super premium Oculus (a Bordeaux inspired wine).

The Five Vineyards line is Mission Hill’s entry-level 100% BC line-up. The 2006 Cabernet-Merlot is a blend of Merlot (48%), Cabernet Sauvignon (37%), and Cabernet Franc (15%). It has a dark ruby red colour, with purple tones. The nose has notes of rich, ripe dark fruit (plums, blackberries, and dark cherries). The ripe fruit flavours continue onto the palate, with the addition of some spices (including cloves). The flavours, soft tannins, and medium acid combine with a lingering finish to produce a pleasant wine that is easy to enjoy.

This is a wine that shows that some of the advantages of being a large (in BC terms) winery: it’s well priced against other BC wines, widely available, and delivers. It is a wine that is enjoyable on its own, but also works well with a variety of foods (including the ubiquitous red meats, pastas, and cheeses). It’s a fitting entry point for such a well known winery.

Here ya’ go kids, your first sneak peek at Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s interpretation of ‘The Mad Hatter’. I normally heart all Burton/Depp collaborations and to date I have adored every one of Johnny D.’s characters…even that creepy Willa Wonka. But I’m a bit disappointed with this one…..Am I the only one that thinks it skews a little too ‘Edward Scissorhands‘ and not enough ‘Mad Hatter‘.

Feds end sewage prosecution despite claim to be ‘tough on environmental crime’

VANCOUVER – Just one month after re-election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has already broken an election promise, as his government today shut down a sewage prosecution in the same city where he vowed to crack down on environmental crime. The prosecution had alleged that the Iona sewage plant in Richmond, operated by Metro Vancouver and sanctioned by the Province of BC, was violating the federal Fisheries Act by sending toxic sewage into salmon-bearing coastal waters.

In 2006, environmental investigator Douglas Chapman, represented by Ecojustice (formerly Sierra Legal Defence Fund), tried to put an end to the pollution by launching a private prosecution against the Province of BC and Metro Vancouver on behalf of three environmental groups: T-Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation, United Fishermen and Allied Workers’ Union and Georgia Strait Alliance.

But today, the federal government ordered the Provincial Court to end the prosecution. The federal lawyer declined to give any reasons for the order. The government’s order stands in stark contrast to Prime Minister Harper’s election campaign promise to crack down on environmental offenders, which he declared in Vancouver on September 24, 2008. At that time, Harper said “If you want a government that is tough on environmental crime, then you should re-elect a government that is tough on crime generally.”

Environmental groups say the federal government is being hypocritical. “I am disgusted that the federal government has ended this prosecution. What’s the point of the law? Polluters get off scot-free,” said Chapman.

Ecojustice staff lawyer Lara Tessaro explained that “the federal government should justify why it is shielding these big polluters from the Court.  Instead, it has refused to give the public any reasons.”

The primary treatment used at the Iona sewage treatment plant removes only 30 to 40 per cent of suspended solids and oxygen-depleting substances, and fails to remove the majority of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants – like PCBs.  These heavy metals and chemicals bioaccumulate as they move up the food chain, harming salmon, killer whales and a myriad of other vulnerable coastal species.

“At a time when we’ve lost seven more of our Southern resident orcas, I’m appalled that the federal government isn’t willing to stop the pollution of their habitat” said Christianne Wilhelmson of Georgia Strait Alliance. “Sewage is one source of toxic contamination we can fix, but governments aren’t doing enough.”

“The Iona sewage plant spews toxins straight into the path of a billion juvenile salmon heading out to sea,” said David Lane, executive director of T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation. “Metro Vancouver must implement advanced, modern sewage treatment at Iona immediately.”

The four organizations now plan to focus their efforts on the upcoming public consultation on Metro Vancouver’s new Liquid Waste Management Plan, and continue to urge that it be strengthened.

And, of course, the sewage works at the south end of Lulu Island is also tipping only partially treated sewage into the South Arm of the Fraser, which is seeing record low salmon returns this year. And I still have to point out the “beach unsafe for swimming” signs to people who persist in wanting to paddle and swim at Garry Point.

Diante de recursos insuficiente para atender a demanda por crédito ao setor produtivo neste ano, o Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES) negocia com o Banco Central a liberação de um adicional de compulsório no sistema financeiro para viabilizar seus financiamentos no valor de R$ 7,5 bilhões.

Na prática, o banco pretende fazer uma captação via Certificados de Depósito Interbancário (CDI) no mercado para garantir um adicional de R$ 10 bilhões aos desembolsos previstos para este ano, que somam R$ 90 bilhões.

Desse montante, a Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF) já garantiu R$ 2,5 bilhões ao banco de fomento, por meio de operações de CDIs. Transações parecidas poderão ser feitas com os demais bancos.

A idéia é atender principalmente as pequenas e microempresas e os projetos de infra-estrutura.

Essa seria a sexta captação de recursos do banco.

Nesta nova operação, o BNDES está disposto a pagar até 104% do CDI, o que pode encarecer o custo das operações do banco.

O presidente do BNDES, Luciano Coutinho, disse que o acordo está sendo costurado com a autoridade monetária e o Ministério da Fazenda e que espera que a definição saia nos próximos dias.

“Queremos saber se parte do compulsório bancário poderá ser usada para este tipo de operação, por parte dos bancos em geral”, disse ele.

Segundo ele, a demanda pelos recursos no banco de fomento permanece elevada, mesmo diante da crise mundial, fenômeno que secou as fontes de financiamento nos bancos do mundo inteiro.

“O banco está capitalizado. Há, porém, insuficiência no funding. Mas não é déficit e nem desequilíbrio patrimonial”, disse.

Somente entre agosto e outubro, as consultas sobre empréstimos cresceram 40% sobre igual período de 2007.

Coutinho informou que, desde o início do ano, houve um adicional de R$ 50,8 bilhões nos desembolsos do BNDES.

Até agora, o BNDES já liberou R$ 71 bilhões.

Entretanto, o aumento dos custos nas operações de empréstimos já atingiram as operações.

Isso porque o custo de captação de recursos subiu de forma generalizada.

Quanto a 2009, Coutinho considera positiva a hipótese de o BNDES usar parte das reservas do fundo soberano, projeto de lei que tramita no Congresso Nacional, como fonte de recursos.

Caso seja aprovado, o fundo teria este ano R$ 14,2 bilhões, o equivalente a 0,5% da meta do superávit primário.

Foram convidados para o debate o ministro da Fazenda, Guido Mantega; o presidente do Banco Central, Henrique Meirelles; o ex-ministro da Fazenda Maílson da Nóbrega; e o economista e ex-presidente do BC Armínio Fraga.

Para o presidente da CCJ, senador Marco Maciel (DEM-PE), a audiência públicaserá de grande importância e servirá para debater saídas concretas destinadas a amenizar a crise financeira internacional  que já começa a trazer resultados negativos para o país.

A audiência pública, marcada para as 14h, foi requerida pelo senador Antonio Carlos Júnior (DEM-BA), relator de dois projetos de lei (PLS 72 e 102, ambos de 2007), de autoria do senador Arthur Virgílio (PSDB-AM), que tramitam em conjunto na CCJ. As propostastratam, respectivamente, da formalização da autonomia do BC, com a definição de mandatos fixos para a diretoria do banco e de restrições à sua demissão, e da regulamentação do Sistema Financeiro Nacional.

Canada Post Strikers

Day three of Canada Post’s strike is seeing a rise in attention from the media. Although Canada Post continues to tell the public that the upcoming Christmas rush will not be affected by the PSAC strike, it seems everyone is questioning how a strike of 2,100 employees can not have an impact on productivity.

Postal workers hit picket lines

Postal workers are picketing across the nation, but the situation shouldn’t affect Christmas mail delivery, insists Canada Post.

At 6 a.m. Monday, 2,100 Union of Postal Communications Employees (UPCE) went on strike in protest of a short-term disability section in Canada Post’s latest contract offer.

Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are supporting the much smaller union, but as of Monday went to work at Canada Post sites across the Capital Region.

The dispute between UPCE members and the corporation is over proposed changes to employees’ short-term disability program. Currently UPCE employees are granted 10 hours of sick leave per month, which they can bank. But in the latest package offered by the corporation, that rule would be replaced with an annual allowance for sick leave.

Employees taking more than that would have their cases administered by Manulife Financial.

“So (Canada Post) wants to completely wash their hands of sick leave,” said Dave Jackson, Victoria representative for the Public Service Alliance of Canada, parent union to UPCE.

The union broke off talks with Canada Post on Nov. 7 and the workers have been without a contract since Aug. 31. UPCE is keen to get back to the bargaining, Jackson said.

Christmas season is busy for Canada Post, he said, adding “a long strike this time of year will certainly have an impact on that.”

Canada Post disagrees.

UPCE employees perform mainly administrative and technical support for Canada Post. Since employees responsible for the collection and delivery of mail are CUPW members, mail delivery will not be affected, the corporation stated in a press release.

Canada Post spokesperson John Caines said the corporation presented an offer Nov. 16 to the chief union negotiator.

“We haven’t heard a thing back yet,” Caines said.

Speaking to the disputed item, he said the altered short-term disability program would fill some coverage gaps and provide better protection for employees.

“It will support them better during and (at the) beginning of any illness that they have,” Caines said.
